I enjoyed another great meal at Rita’s today. I had my usual, chicken tikka masala and my wife had Lamb Vindaloo, extra Hot. Both were delicious. My opinion is the food here is fantastic and authentic. I travel to India and Dubai on business every two months and have sampled hundreds of great Indian cuisines and I tell my associates there I am lucky to have a great Indian restaurant near my home in Los Angeles that compares to any local place, thank you Rita , , regards, Bill Kinsey
Real truth: amazing food, gorgeous space, Rita is a fiesty ball of fire you'll love if you appreciate fiesty balls of fire. The service is not fast. She makes everything herself. Worth the wait. Great space for quiet, meeting locals, date night. I'm coming back for Rita and everything about this place.
Tried the Vegetable Kofta, Matar Paneer, and Achari Chicken with Garlic Naan at Rita’s Gate of India—everything was flavorful and cooked to perfection. The Achari Chicken was especially delicious! Highly recommend for authentic Indian cuisine.
Rita’s food is amazing, her best style dish is the lemon fish curry. If you order it, you should have it spicy!! Reason being is because it’s already sweet, the spicy flavor mixed in leads to an experience that is riveting and sublime to the American palate. It’s so sublime that it would go subliminal!
Rita’s Gate has become our local go-to whenever our daughter craves curry. The family that runs it is very sweet and always takes good care of us. We’ve order most of the curries on the menu, and have never been let down by the quality of their food, but we usually fall back on a few favorite dishes. Our daughter always gets their Butter Chicken. It’s one of her favorites on the westside. We usually have to get 2 orders because she devours one herself, so we need an additional to share. It always satisfies. The Lamb Achaar is terrific with its savory, spicy, and tangy flavors and has become my favorite. The Chef’s Special curry is also terrific. We’ve had it several times with every meat option available, and shrimp is the way to go. Their Saag Paneer is one of the better ones on the westside. And the Eggplant Dish (Baigan Bharta) is fantastic. If you’re looking for Indian food in the area, I highly recommend Rita’s Gate of India.
BEST INDIAN FOOD ON THE WEST SIDE! Authentic, charming, and cozy. I stopped in while running errands and was greeted by Rita herself. She is the chef at Rita’s Gate of India and takes exceptional pride in her food. This time around I had the chicken tikka masala. Cooked to perfection. Creamy and delicious with the garlic naan. I love their portion sizes— enough to split with another person or to take home leftovers for lunch the next day! The samosa was also really yummy and paired with two savory, flavorful sauces. Super super good! Rita also added some saffron to the rice which added a special touch. I’ve also had their Korma Curry with chicken and it’s very flavorful. Every time I’ve gone to Rita’s it hits the spot! It’s so important to support local businesses like Rita’s. Family run businesses like these add so much love to their food, I’m convinced that’s her secret ingredient. 💜
Wonderful family-owned restaurant. If you're trying to venture outside the usual butter chicken, I'd strongly recommend the Beef Nihari and Roganjosh. Food has some Bengali influences (don't let the thick layer of oil scare you!), and a really good balance of spices and heat. Very happy with the warm, homely service. The food tasted like it was made with care 💕
BEST Indian food in LA by far! From being greeted at the door to the amazing food and service this place was 5 stars all the way. I’m half Indian myself and think my mum makes the best Indian food ever, but this place gives her a run for her money! Talking about prices, it was super reasonable coming in at under $50 for a couple of mains and an appetizer. Star of the menu was the tandoori chicken and the garlic naan. I’ve never had better garlic naan in my life, it was soft and fluffy but also crunchy and not too chewy - I was seriously amazed and had to force myself to stop eating (but ordered some more to take home 😅). Anyway, love this place, love Rita the owner and cannot wait to come back!!
We had an absolutely wonderful experience at Rita’s restaurant. Our flight was delayed from LAX it was an easy Uber ride to her Resturant . We were greeted by the owner she is absolutely lovely and stunning person has been in business more than 32 years. The food was delicious - we ordered a whole lot of stuff everything was amazing but our favorite was the lamb and the shrimp. The food is very authentic and each plate individually made for the customer.. Close to Santa Monica beach for a little walk after a wonderful meal thank you again for the pleasant experience we had.
Rita was amazing! She was very thoughtful of our experience, talked with us, then cooked for us. The food tasted perfect and we all had different plates and tried each other's. We felt like this was a personal experience eating food we usually don't get where we live. Definitely recommend coming here!
Searching for an Indian restaurant got me here. The aroma outside also pushed me to go in. Found out Rita and her husband is from my grandparents ancestral town. The food was really good. Spice level perfect and got the authentic taste. Gravy and Rice Quantity is good for 2 person. Fast service, every patron is taken care personally. I will suggest have chicken biriyani it has really nice flavor and it reminded of my hometown. Will visit this place again when I am back to Santa Monica.
Pretty good food. Staff was really friendly. Samosa seemed homemade. My tikka masala was great but some of the veggies were cold inside the hot mix making me wonder if it was previously frozen? Leaving 4 stars because of the cold items and the prices were quite high but I’m sure their rent isnt cheap.
The food wasn't great. It was just okay. Too rich gravies upset our stomachs later on. Service was really fast after they took our order but they took forever to come and take the order in the first place. No restrooms allowed! Like really?! We ordered two appetizers chana puri and bhel puri, they were good. Vegetable koftas were good but again the rich gravy. :( Chana masala was good. The other two non-vegetarian dishes were just okay. Will I visit them again? No. They are very pricey when compared to the quality of food.
Average Indian restaurant in Santa Monica. Vibes were very traditional, cozy, and the aroma was filled with spices. The chicken tikka had quite a large portion but was extremely expensive ($26). It was also on the sweeter side which some may or may not prefer. Service was a bit slower even when restaurant was practically empty; would recommend going if you have money to spend. However, the food was very good overall.
Crazy town! We walk in on a Sunday night to an almost empty and rather bleak dining room. Wait a reasonable (not short) amount of time before we're greeted by what could possibly be the owner, not friendly - just odd. My daughter had a hankering for a korma but wanted to add potatoes. Me: we'd like an order of veggie samosas and chicken korma, but please add potatoes to it. Him: Hold on, let me see if we have any samosas. Returns to the table and says yes we have one Samosa left. Now, when have you ever been in an Indian restaurant when an order of samosas wasn't two?? But he was trying to tell us that the five dollar Samosa was just one. Ummm....I don't think so. Ok no problem just give us the one. Me: And then we'd like to order the korma and add potatoes (again). Him: We can't do that. Me: Why? Him: Because we can't. Me: Wait. You have potatoes in the keema curry right? So can't you just take the potatoes that you would use in that curry and add some to the korma? Him: No sorry. Us: See ya! We headed back to our neighborhood joint in Woodland Hills, which was packed with people and warm and festive and friendly with always amazing customer service!
I was excited to try out this restaurant because I saw it in the area but I was very let down. I called the restaurant to place a togo order and when I inquired about a dish due to my allergies the woman on the phone became very angry and rude. I asked her if the beef curry had any fish in it because I have a major seafood allergy and its common for seafood to be used in dishes I wouldn't expect sometimes (for example some places cook with Worcestershire sauce or fish sauce for seasonings ) so I always ask just to be safe and not assume because it can be dangerous for me if I don't. After the lady became disrespectful by continuously saying in a rude way “ why would fish be in a beef curry” and “to not ask questions like that because it was making her mad “ I decided not to even order from here because I don’t care how good the food MIGHT be , the rudeness and disrespect will never be tolerated and no restaurant should speak to their customers this way. 0/10!
