Honestly, this is the best Chinese food I've had since the '90s! It's so simple – no fuss, no gimmicks, just really good food that just warms your soul. And get this, they do takeout, which I wouldn't normally do for a place an hour away, but this place is the exception! Totally worth 2 hours of drive time
The best Chinese resturante and food around. Their own recipes. 3/4 generation run and bn going there since I was a child. Wish they would move between Syracuse and Rochester ny. Would lv their recipe for chicken chow mein, egg rolls and soup/hard noodles. Lv it there. Best Chinese food in the state
Personal favorite for very long time, always check out when on leave in hometown (and always forget to take photo of food before I devour hahaha). Nice atmosphere and staff. Water is fantastic, tea is tea too haha Comes with those stick cracker things. Roast pork appetizer and roast pork fried rice no veggie personal favorite, but also order chicken on. Skew, beef on a skew, chicken wings and their hamburger. Price has gone up over time but still worth. The have smorgasbord but I never go for that, but it has good selection. They appear to have alchohal but I don't drink.
Old style Chinese Food. It’s my favorite Chinese restaurant in Kingston. Dine in or take out. It’s great either way.
All of the classic Chinese takeout staples. Fresh! Homemade! Delicious! Had an absolute feast and everything was fantastic. Really excited to dine in here someday as the ambiance in the dining room looks awesome.
I loved the different options of dishes they had. Hopefully my Innie gets to try this place too.
I have been coming here for over 10 years. We travel an hour to get there. One of the best places I've ever had Chinese food. And their egg rolls are outstanding.
Mom's favorite...Eng's Egg Rolls and Wontons Soup. We love Eng's Chow Mein with extra wide noodles. We have tried many of the dishes & All are good. I am thankful for delivery during Covid. Anything Mom wants, we get her :)
The only Chinese food I will eat. Great quality. Excellent price. The owners actually care what they are serving their customers, unlike all those other nasty Chinese restaurants. I miss eating in the restaurant , since covid their dinning room is closed. Always look forward to a engs meal! Highly recommend lol mein, egg rolls, mushoo pork, and general Taos chicken.
I grew up going to Engs.. my grandparents and parents both went there for Chinese food. I have lived in the Albany area for 13 years now, and no place out of hundreds up here compares to Engs. There is just something different and delicious about it. Very good vegetable fried rice as well.
Excellent classic Chinese food and generous portions... I just finished leftovers from Friday and it was just as good as when I brought it home... Superb value and quick service!
I was VERY hungry after undergoing my re-intergration procedure. I met my girlfriend/boss there and enjoyed a meal.
One of our all time favorite restaurants. We love the traditional style food. Everything is always hot and tasty. they also offer a buffet which is super great deal..priced low and huge variety of foods. No other place has eggrolls as delicios as Engs! Highly recommend this place.
The ribs were really flavorful and cooked well! The wonton soup was also really good. It's great to support a historic Kingston restaurant.
If you want real Chinese food ..this is the place to go I wouldn't believe the negative reveiws there not accurate they are from people that are not used to real Chinese food and just plain rude. I have been coming to Engs over 20 years and guess what the food is great the egg roles are one of a kind homemade the roast pork with mushroom is great the pork wonton soup is also great the food they serve is real home cook style food it's not like every other Chinese food place ..its authentic Chinese food. Mr.Eng and his family and staff are all friendly and nice people. My experience there has always been pleasent I even drive 30 minutes to bring it home and it still hot every time.Where else would you find a smorgussboard buffet with fresh good food and get good tea or even a nice cocktail drink not any other Chinese food place in Kingston,NY.The building has kinda of a retro style but it is clean and nice and it kinda cool to see all the pigion racing trofees. This is a Honest option ..I was not paid or ask to leave it and I'm not a friend and I don't leave reveiws unless I feel a place need a true full review.
I appreciate this place’s atmosphere. Great place to run into coworkers or your CEO. Food is perfect when you’re feeling super hungry before a brain operation.
Very good food and at a decent price. I had Sweet & Sour Pork. I was surprised that it had pineapple in sauce, and pleasantly surprised at how much flavor it added. It had large pieces of tomatoes, which I easily pushed aside, as tomatoes often do not agree with me. It was served with a delicious vegetable egg roll, called a spring roll where I live. The plate also comes with fried white rice, and I asked for pork fried rice as a substitute, and it was immediately agreed to, and there was no "substitution" charge. Before ordering they brought out a bowl of Chinese noodles, and 2 sauces. A hot pot of tea was also presented. No charge, which is customary. The quantity was a little more than expected, so I brought home a small container. My grandson had the same meal, substituting chicken instead of pork. He ate his entire plate, minus the tomatoes and pineapple. He ate almost all of the egg roll, and left a small bite since he was full! For Chinese food with a twist, I strongly recommend that you try Eng's!
The food was really good. Egg drop soup was so yummy and .ase well. You can tell it is quality food.
Eng's never disappoints...so much so that we just drove 2.5 hours jto eat their food! It was my husband's birthday and he was craving their Singapore Chow Mei Fun...we were saddened that there was no eat-in options because of the pandemic, but we got take -out and went to a local park and made a picnic out of it. The meal was delicious!
So sad that the dining room is closed because I can't find people to work. This is the best Chinese food I've ever had! I've been going here for over 30 years!!! great food
Their chicken wonton soup is just incredible. The best remedy for a cold! Add in some of their house made spicy mustard sauce and it's amazing. Great old school family recipes. Not your average Chinese restaurant!
A hometown classic! Been around since I was a little girl,; and I have often gone there; or friends took me there for my birthday or just for dinner. Great food at good prices; and always brought a pot of tea ( no charge) to your table. I love tomato rice soup and often got a quart for dinner when I was by myself ; filling good ; and inexpensive. It's been around for years so that pretty much says it all! Eat in or take out.
Eng's has been an area favorite for over 90 years. I have been going there for over 60 of those years. The food was outstanding when I first went there as a child with my mom and it is outstanding now. In fact it is the only restaurant that I am aware of that has consistently maintained their recipes over the decades. They are the only Chinese restaurant that still prepares chicken chow mein and other dishes the old fashioned way, like the chop suey houses from an era gone by. I see negative reviews from the past few years coinciding with the mass exodus of Citidiots from Brooklyn, Manhattan and the rest of New York City. It's no surprise that the Citidiots would leave negative reviews given their rude, snotty behavior in stores, on the roads and elsewhere in public. They come upstate to escape the crime and stench of New York City and then try their best to transform upstate into their personal Brooklyn. Do us all a favor; go back to where you came from. You are not wanted or welcome. Go back to New York and your fru-fru kale restaurants that you apparently miss so much.
Some of the best Chinese food in the Hudson Valley. Unfortunately they didn't have enough staff to have the dinning room open. We still ordered and brought it home. My family and I look forward to being able to have a meal there in the future.
Old School Traditional Chinese Restaurant! Eng’s has been a Kingston NY institution since the 1920’s. Reminds me of the best restaurants in Chinatown, NYC. Ridiculously low prices for high-quality Chinese food. Without a doubt the best damn eggroll you will ever eat! I sometimes stop on the way home from work and pick up several orders of egg rolls and make a meal of them! Can’t recommend this wonderful place more highly!
My family has been going to engs for four generation's. My grandfather helped build the dining area roof when the car wash was there in the 70s. Where can you find a Chinese restaurant where you are always remembered and the service is friendly and always smiling. My childhood favorite is a large bowl of chicken noodle soup and 2 egg rolls and always will be. Plus it has the best pigeon racing trophy collection ever and is just a beautiful place to eat.
Somewhat of an institution in the area. I've been going here since I was little. If you're expecting a fancy, high-end restaurant, then this isn't the place. But for the best eggrolls in town (and pretty much for MILES around), absolutely great people and great food in general, then you could hardly do better. I pretty much do takeout or eat in at least once a week. Great place!
Stopped in for impromptu take out this evening and I am so glad we did. I’ve had roughly 20 years of eating Chinese food all over the USA. Coast to coast. Florida to Canada. I can’t remember a better tasting meal, nicer atmosphere or better service anywhere. The hostess was courteous and made suggestions even while serving other take out customers who had called ahead, and we could barely decide what to try since from the moment you walk into Eng’s you get the feeling everything is going to be good. We went with personal favorites, and the owner Tom Sit brought the food out soon after we ordered. We heard about how the pandemic had forced their table service to abruptly end, and how difficult it was to restart. We spoke of loyalty and of passion for cooking and providing quality food for the community. I saw a man dedicated to his craft and business and I hope his restaurant finds the support it needs to thrive. The food was stellar, the flavor unparalleled, and the quality of cooking was excellent. The meat was very tender, the noodles were perfect, the rice was flavorful. The egg rolls are home made and absolutely decadent. There are no photos in this review because the delicious aroma of the meal beckoned us to eat it immediately. I feel good after eating the food from Eng’s kitchen. My belly is satisfied and light but my wallet still feels heavy! We’ll be back, we’ll bring friends, and we hope to eat in the beautiful dining room one day soon. Thank you for a great meal and experience.
My girlfriend and I have been dying to eat at Engs for several years. We're not from the area but we like to take day trips to the Catskills, so when we first ran into Engs we knew it would be a destination for us. Unfortunately the dining room had been closed since Covid. Much to our delight, we noticed on a recent trip in January that the dining room was reopening. However, it isn't open everyday and it was going to be hard to get there. This past weekend, Mother's day, we happened to be in the area. It was getting late and close to their closing time, so I called ahead to see if we could dine in. As a chef, I hate being the last table of the night as I know how inconvenient that can be for a tired staff. They encouraged us to come in and were so kind to wait for us. When we arrived they had a table set and waiting for us. The entire staff was so friendly and welcoming. The ambience of the restaurant is so warm. It takes you back to time of my childhood where dine in Chinese restaurants were so much more common. We absolutely loved the feel of stepping back in time. The food did not disappoint. We had maybe the best wonton soup I've ever had, followed by boneless spareribs, egg rolls, chicken chop suey and pork lo mein. It was all prepared so fast and absolutely delicious. Though we were in very late, we were not rushed at all. The owners treated us as such special guest. Absolutely amazing people. Great food. Beautiful place. We loved all of it. I can only hope this place lives on forever. Thank you!
Eng’s dining room is back open and still amazing! I have been going to Eng’s for Chinese since I was in a high chair, now 27, I live for their chicken chow mein and egg rolls. Being able to sit in the dining room again for the first time in 5 years was amazing. It felt like it was never gone. Seeing all the staff back and of course Tom & Faye thriving was the best. We can’t wait to keep dining in at Eng’s!
Excellent Chinese food for many years open for more than 50 years.
Delicious food that is made to order. They were very busy when we visited. I was able to peek in the kitchen as the busy staff were going in and out and was so impressed with the lineup! Everything was delicious and staff were super attentive.
Has always been the best Chicken Chow Mein in the world, no one else makes it like them! Also best eggrolls and fried rice you’ll ever have!!
There aren't enough stars to rate Eng's! The food is traditional, just as I remember from I was a kid... and beyond delicious! The dining room is perfectly preserved from the 60/70s and just makes the experience that much better! This restaurant is a gem in the community and I try to make it there whenever I am in the area. Definitely a local business that needs and deserves our support.
Went there for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. This is a traditional styled Chinese restaurant. Great atmosphere, plenty of parking and great customer service. Best of all the food was delicious as well. They were able to accommodate my order to be converted to vegetarian even though it was not on the menu.
The best! Awesome owner! Awesome staff! Awesome Chinese food! ❤️
The best of the best!! So good, every time! Love Engs. I recommend! I ordered kung pro chicken (which I’m not even sure is on the menu) this time, with wontons and egg roll. Delicious!
Got delivery for the first time...was told it would be a reasonable 45 minutes for the delivery. The showed up in less than a half hour! I didn't even know who was at the door. Will definitely order again! ///// edit 08/20/2021--- I just order again...as I have many times in the last few years...and honestly...19 minutes from the time I called and they were at my door. Again told me 45. Incredible. Not to mention the food is great. And not the typical American Chinese food that you get (and I love equally) .
Great food. I was introduced to the restaurant in the 60's as a kid. I still order from here from time to time and have dined at the restaurant as well as had it to go. Great food and a Kingston fixture. Congratulations on your recent James Beard Award!!
We were passing through the area coming from south Jersey and decided to stop in. The atmosphere was welcoming and really awesome. It is tastefully decorated inside i really liked it. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. When we were seated we were brought out hot tea and crackers which I was not expecting but it was really nice. The waitress was helpful with recommendations. The food came out surprisingly fast. All of the food we got was excellent and very reasonably priced for what you get. We tried the chicken lo mein, chicken chow mein, and chicken and broccoli as well as fried rice and of course egg rolls. Nothing bad to say about any of it. If you’re looking for a filling meal at a place that is comfortable and friendly, I highly recommend trying out Engs. Wish we were here on a smorgasbord day! If we’re ever in the area again we will be sure to stop by again!
This place is amazing and delicious. Establishments like this are few and far between these days. A proper old school Chinese restaurant and institution of classic Americana. They care enough to make their egg rolls in-house. The decor is perfect, and the building and signage is utterly charming. There’s a reason they were scouted to feature in a hit TV show (known for its cinematography, might I add). All of the bad reviews saying the food is tasteless have had their palettes conditioned by Chinese takeout that all basically comes from a distribution center and loaded with sugar and flavor enhancers that you can’t pronounce. That’s why the sauces all taste the same and an egg roll tastes identical in Minnesota or Connecticut. Keep doing what you’re doing Eng’s. You’re a gem.
This place is a monument to American Chinese food. If you grew up in the 60s-80s, this is just how you remember it. The decor, food, drinks in tiki glasses. Going to be back often and bringing friends with me Update: Went on jazz night. Great atmosphere! Also tried the egg rolls this time. Best egg rolls I’ve ever had. I think they must make them in-house. Experience was even better than the last time.
This was some of the best Chinese food I had to date and worth the drive up from Pennsylvania to try out. We had the Wonton Soup with Pork, PuPu platter for 2, the ribs, orange chicken/beef special and ice cream for dessert, I had a scoup of coconut which had real flakes in the ice cream and coffee which was very flavorful. My friend had the blueberry cheese cake ice cream which he raved about. The Mai Tai was amazing also. Service was very friendly and attentive, they may be slightly understaffed. I enjoyed the classic appearance of the interior, very old school and I loved it. I will be back!
I love Eng's!!! Best Chinese food in Kingston. I grab it after training across the road at Midtown Jiu Jitsu and I always look forward to saying hi to the folk that work here. They are always happy to see you.
Amazing sit down with live music some nights and all you can eat other nights. Takes reservations for large parties but also has dedicated tables for walk in.
I had been looking forward to visiting Eng's for a while, and it was exactly what I'd expected and hoped for. The interior has the feel you'd want from an historic restaurant - it has a lot of character and authenticity, versus the samey, rather dull look of many contemporary restaurants. It feels like a place that has been around for decades because it has, and that's perfect. Our food was also good. The sauces were a bit syrupy but still tasted nice, the portion sizes were just right, and in an age when eating out can be very expensive, the prices at Eng's felt very reasonable for what you get. This place doesn't have the vibe of a high-end boutique restaurant, but it doesn't charge you that price either, and still delivers quality. It's not always easy to find that. If you're someone who appreciates restaurants that still have a local and distinctive presence with an unpretentious but well-kept atmosphere, and good food for affordable prices, Eng's is worth visiting. I know I'm looking forward to going back again.
Fun old fashioned place and the food was good! The Egg Foo Yung and Cantonese Steak with broccoli were especially good! Prices were very reasonable and the portions were huge! Very friendly staff! (Just a little bit slow and server didn't know how several dishes were made and we ordered the chop suey but didn't get the dish). We'll definitely be back when we're next in town.
I came here during my Office-Severance tour, and it was very cool to see a filming location from Severance. The food was tasty and the staff were kind.
My partner Justin and I went to Eng's as part of our Severance-filming-location trip. We actually got there way too early and stuck around the area, checking out little shops for hours before they opened and we are SO GLAD we did. We got there right when the dining room opened and were geeking out the whole time about the place - the lighting, the art that was left up in the scene in Severance, the awesome owner and waiter. It was all great. The mai tai was amazing as was the veggie lo mein and spare ribs. We can't wait to go back someday soon!! Thanks to the staff for being so kind and funny and letting us take a bunch of pictures.
Been going here for 35 years and so happy that they've reopened. I've had BBQ'd spareribs all over the country and have yet to find better than Engs..Staples like egg rolls, fried rice, egg foo yung, and most meat entrees are spot on. Wonderful family business, and a must for Kingston visitors.
Eng’s - an icon! Amazing food, atmosphere, and efficient service! All of the classics are there! When in Kingston, Eng’s is a must! When you step into the beautiful and iconic dining room of Eng’s, you embark on more than just a culinary experience. The world around you transforms into a sanctuary of relaxation, peace, and love. Every worry melts away, replaced by smiles, meaningful conversations, and joyous celebrations. Thank you, Eng’s, for creating this haven for myself, my family, and my friends for so many wonderful years.
I am an Ng without the E, and I love a dine-in Chinese restaurant because the food is always better freshly cooked without plastic waste. Eng's has great old-school ambiance, friendly service, and delicious food and cocktails. So happy to see the dining room open again. My husband and I went on Valentine's Day early at 5 and got the buffet to sample a variety of dishes. Fantastic egg rolls. Everything was excellent. We tried the egg foo yung, which I never order, and it was surprisingly tasty to me. When we left, there was a big crowd waiting for tables. We will be back to order off the menu.
First time at Eng's Chinese Restaurant in Kingston… and wow, what a gem. ✨ That neon sign has been calling our name for years, and we finally answered. Owned by Tom and Faye Sit since 1978 (and originally founded in 1927!), Eng’s holds the title of Kingston’s first Chinese restaurant — and was just honored with the James Beard America's Classics Award for its incredible, multi-generational legacy. You can feel that history the moment you walk in. Stepping through the door is like a cozy time warp back to the 1970s — wood paneling, low-pile red carpet, and a dining room buzzing with regulars. We had 12 people ahead of us and not a single complaint — that’s how you know it’s good. The hostess was such a delight and completely set the tone. Our waitress delivered everything with a smile (and even a song!). Pure charm. Now the food: 🥢 Egg rolls – Crunchy, flavorful, slightly saltier than usual (in the best way), made with celery instead of cabbage. Addictive. 🍜 Pork Yat Gaw Mein (“hangover soup”) – A rich, sultry chicken broth with green onions, long noodles with just the right chew, and tender slices of red pork. It looks simple, but it’s deeply flavorful and comforting. 🔥 Double Wonder (General Tso’s Chicken + Orange Beef) – Both listed as “spicy” (mild for us, but packed with flavor). The beef was exceptionally tender and stole the show. The chicken had a light, slightly crunchy coating that we loved. 🥬 Twice Cooked Pork – Tender seasoned pork with loads of veggies. So good. Insider tip: Ask for the homemade spicy chili oil. It’s smoky with a gentle heat that elevates everything without overpowering it. We’re guessing the spice levels are dialed back a bit for regional tastes — next time, I’m asking if they’ll turn up the “full Chinese flavor” option. 😉 Total for dinner and four beers: $75 (plus tip). Very reasonable for the quality and experience. We loved every minute. Eng’s isn’t just a restaurant — it’s a living piece of Kingston history. If you haven’t been, go. And don’t skip the chili oil. 🌶️ #hudsonvalleyeats #hudsonvalleyny #engskingston #engsrestaurant #engschinese
Dear newcomers: please be kind to Eng's. There's a context here... this is Chinese food from long ago; it isn't Flushing, it isn't even Tofu on 7th Avenue. The decor is as much a time warp as the food, there's no need to denigrate it and say that the carpet needs to be "updated". Eng's is Kingston's own museum of Chinese-American cuisine, and if you accept that, then you'll appreciate its massive charm and importance around here. Where else outside of Fort Lauderdale will you find these crazy Tiki drinks, and where else in the known universe will you see hundreds of victory trophies for homing pigeons?
The food seems to not be what it was in the past. They no longer offer dining in, takeout only. Was always my favorite Chinese place
I love Engs food and there service. I had Sweet & Sour Shrimp, delicious they serve battered dipped shrimp cooked in the sweet and sour sauce with tomato, green peppers, pineapple. Every other place I have gone to has always put the sauce on the side, this is so much better cooked in the sauce. My girlfriends had the chicken chow mien and I love that too here, better than anywhere else I had. If you want to have what Engs is famous for its there Egg Rolls. People who have moved away and return home to visit always go to Eng's and buy there Egg Rolls to take back with them, there the Best around. Right now during Covid there offering take out only. Enjoy
I have lived in and around Kingston my entire life. Eng's is still by far the best family run Chinese restaurant in the area. The building and furnishings are original from the start but don't let that fool you. The service and food are great. The egg rolls are unrivaled PERIOD. Wonton soup is one of the best around as well. Michael and his family are ready to serve you a great meal. Chicken chow mein and egg foo young are their signature dishes. My mother ships egg rolls to her best friend in Florida regularly if that means anything. If you like dishes such as Sesame Chicken etc, this is not the place though. This is a Cantonese restaurant primarily. It is highly regarded among those whom know.
This is a really good old school Chinese dine in restaurant with homemade egg rolls. The spare ribs are fabulous. I haven't had good Chinese food like this since I lived in the Bronx. Definitely check it out.
The egg rolls have always been the best, I didn't like the way they packaged the steamed dumplings in the little cardboard carton though because they all stuck together in a wad. They're usually packaged on a covered plastic plate.
First time diner at Eng's after living nearly a decade in Kingston. We kept meaning to try, then they were closed for years due to Covid issues. It's really nice inside and bigger than you might think from the outside. Plenty of seating, lots of comfy booths. Super friendly and attentive service. Clearly lots of regulars who got hugs from staff and management. As for the food, it was just okay. The standout was the egg roll -- super crispy and packed with ingredients...the mustard dipping sauce is really potent, so watch out! We had orange beef, General Tso's chicken, broccoli in spicy sauce, and pork fried rice. Everything was nicely prepared, professionally presented, but to be honest the sauces need more flavor. A bit too bland, but certainly acceptable. We did enjoy ourselves and loved the service, so we intend to go back and also do takeout...hoping to discover some standout dishes for our palates. It is certainly a Kingston institution since the 1920s and gets a lot of love from longtime locals.
Eng's is a very traditional Americanized Cantonese restaurant in continuous operation since the early 20th century. As a historical experience it deserves 5 stars but it may be a little tame for modern palates. I really want to go back in a flapper dress!
Wow! This place is a gem of a restaurant. Classic neon sign outside is classic retro. This feeling continues once you are inside seated in the booths. They offer all of the classic 60s tiki drinks as well as the mugs, glasses, and bowls to go along with them. We ordered Planter’s Punch and it was served in a huge parrot mug with paper flower, cherry, and orange slice. The food is no-frills Chinese-american fare. Nothing spectacular or even note-worthy but for $6 what would you expect. This place has style ozzing out of the wood panel and pleather booth cushions. I didn’t see a single Chinese person working there the afternoon we went but it still felt authentic…. I think. Regardless…. I will be back. This place rules!
Went for the buffet, limited choices, food was overcooked, dessert choice were not appetizing and very limited. Service and friendly. Will not return
Not what it use to be. Food was okay. But it honestly tasted like they haven't cleaned the deep fryer and or changed the oil in long time. I will try again and update if Food is better prepared. But very doubtful cause same issue last time I ordered.
I visited here last Friday for their smorgasbord. There was a huge line, which my wife and I happily waited in based on all their fantastic reviews. Unfortunately, I would have a hard time wanting to come back here. I am surprised to have had the experience I had, because I chose to go here because of their positive reviews! The wait time was high, which I was fine with. Their website says they only take reservations for 5 or more people. While we were waiting, numerous reservations came in to be seated, and only one group had 5 people. That was frustrating, because I would have made a reservation. Additionally, numerous reserved tables stayed reserved long after the time the waitress called their original reserved time. That’s kinda unacceptable when you have a huge line that doesn’t even fit into your establishment. Give a 15 minute grace period and then seat the people actually there. I’m not sure about the takeout or other dine-in foods, but the buffet was… actually really bad. General Chicken was weird and tangy, chicken and broccoli was in an extremely thick chunky gravy and the broccoli was so overcooked it was complete mush, the egg roll was FULL of celery for some reason, the pork dumpling had so much dough and barely any filling, and many of the other items also had weird sourness to them rather than a nice balance of flavors. On a positive note, the fried rice and lomein noodles were good, the bourbon chicken was nice, and the ribs had great flavor but were EXTREMELY dry. The food kept coming out fresh because it was busy, which was appreciated, so I’m really not sure why all of this was the way it was. Maybe it was just a rough night! I wish this place the best, and it seems like they have a big fan base, which is great! I wish I was one of them!
I'm going to give them another chance. My experience was underwhelming. General chicken was dry, tough snd stringy. People are nice. But, like I said, I want to give them another chance.
Very old-school. A carafe of tea dropped on the table without us asking, very kind and generous. Wonderful wait staff. Unfortunately, that vintage style includes the menu. Very heavy on the sodium and starch in all the sauces. Fried rice doused in soy sauce to give it a dark color instead of using aromatics and letting it crisp up in the pan. Limited variation in the vegetarian section. That being said... I would love to go for just cocktails, as their menu looks to have all the old school drinks in fancy drink ware.
Have ordered take out a few times and have been happy with the food. Yesterday my husband and I decided to dine in and try the buffet. Food was okay. Price great, only complaint is I have a barely 3 year old and and 18 month old. It's was $5.50 for each child to eat the buffet "when they eat a few pieces of rice". Maybe we've been spoiled moving from Utah but most restaurants with a buffet style is 4 & under eat free. I will not go back because of this. Company policy has lost my business.
The food was OK. Girlfriend was extremely disappointed. I thought it was "ok". Waitress was strange, brought check too fast, while in the middle of eating. Pricey for what it was. There's definitely much better options out there, the food was mediocre at best. Desert on buffet was canned peaches
Not sure what the local raving is about. I'm local and won't return. Beef and broccoli was actually just broccoli. Pros: -Seemed fresher than expected -serves alcohol Cons: - Small amounts - flavorless everything! - not so great service - veggie to protein ratio was disrespectful IG:@t_mo_swagglio23
I am genuinely bewildered why this place has so many glowing reviews. I tried Engs in May of 2025. My wife and I got General Tso chicken, chicken with broccoli and a few egg rolls. The egg rolls were obviously mass produced and frozen. The entrees were so dull and tasteless I needed to add hot sauce just to taste something. The chicken in the General Tso was 90% breading and served in a bath of high fructose corn syrup. The chicken with broccoli was tough and chewy, definitely not velveted properly. We got the food takeout and the service inside was fine. In Kingston there are several Chinese food places, and most of them are better than Eng's.
Was really looking forward to trying this place. It is very early mid century and gives a good vibe. The service was unbelievably deshevled, we were offered tons of water but waited from 6 to 6:45 for a table and got eating at about 7:50. The food was lukewarm and we didn't finish it. So sad to write a bad review but it was a pretty crappy experience throughout. I do own a tee-shirt and it's a very cool design. Hope they figure it out.
We were visiting relatives in Kingston, July 2023. We decided to have Eng's food delivered. We were told by our relatives how Eng's was good, so we ordered. We had multiple people who have had Eng's in the past. I myself have never tried Eng's. The food arrived sooner than they estimated. Of course I also wonder if they tell you longer than they think, so you're happy when it arrives. Either way it would have worked and we were happy. The food was not cheap. But to be fair, not overly expensive either. Myself and the wife both ordered combination dinners. They came in those little cardboard boxes rather than the recyclable plastic trays every other place we have ordered Chinese food from comes in. As such, it was a major pain to have to find plates and serve our food out of boxes onto a plate. The fried rice was everywhere. Now the important part. The food was not very good. My General Tso Chicken was solid chicken and not byproducts and such. But like all of our food, it had little flavor. I loaded up the rice with Soy Sauce to help it. But there's a fine line between helping it and turning the rice into salt flavored substance. Not one person thought their food was good. And they all said, they had always had good food there. But they also said, it had been a while. So had things changed? I want to point out that this was our only time trying Eng's. Maybe it was a bad night or something . But what ever it was, the food failed miserably. The large amounts of left overs were thrown out, as nobody expected to eat them. All of us, normally would eat the left overs. So that really said something. This was just our experience. Yours may be different. So judge for yourselves. I truly hope you have better results.
I always come there and the old chinese lady is rude to me and my mom. She has no respect or sympathy to reason with customers. If you run a business expect people to complain. And when problems arise you should know how to handle them without acting like a paycho. A normal person would remake your food and probably even offer a refund. Theres also a older guy there i brang my girlfriend there a few times and the service wasnt that great so my gf didn't want to tip. I suggested to leave a dollar or two and she said no they are rude. They arent getting a tip so i said okay. Much to my suprise the waiter said to her "you need it more than i do". At this point i wanted to get up and punch this guy in the face. You dont disrespect my friends and family. Im sure it wont be long until someone flips out on someone who works there. Also the shrimp roll was burning hot ao i cut it in half to eat it. Well nice suprise there was a small piece of plastic inside the shrimp roll. I'm so glad i ate the shrimp roll and not my mom. She would have choked on it not cut it open like me. These people need to fire half there staff and learn to START listening to the customer WERE PAYING YOUR PAYCHECKS! DUMMIES! Do not order at engs go to no1 house or sunshine its wayyyyyy better.
If I could rate below a 1, I would. I ordered a drink and it didn’t taste right. They brought me another drink and that drink had an odd taste to it also, so I politely asked them to take it back and I’ll just stick with a water. When the bill came, the drink was on my bill and I asked the waitress to take it off since I didn’t drink the drinks and sent them back right away. The manager comes back and tells me she has to charge me since they had to make it twice. I said to her, it’s not my fault the drink didn’t taste right. And it’s not like I drank it at all. Anyway, she told me she has no choice but to charge me. So I’m annoyed at this point, so I just paid the bill. I ripped up the itemized receipt and left. The manager follows me to my car and says, “don’t ever come back here” I told her I don’t plan to ever come back because I’ve never been treated so horribly in my life. Not to mention, I was charged for something I didn’t even consume. worst experience ever.
Sadly to say the past few times we ordered from here the food hasn't been that good. Used to be the best place in Kingston to get Chinese food not anymore.
Food was horrible. Dumplings were dry and crushed, egg foo young was burned, and soup tasted like gym socks. When I called to complain I was yelled at and told not to come back. No refund was offered. Worst Chinese food in town and worst customer service. Don't go there.
Normally don’t write reviews- but Absolutely the worst Chinese food I’ve ever had. Never again. Chicken was gross, lo mein was gross. No flavor whatsoever
This Chinese food here stinks!! I’m sooo sorry😩People here in Kingston rave over how good this place is. I’m not sure where people have eaten or what they are comparing this restaurant to but this is my second try and have been disappointed both times. The egg roll I ordered was all celery and the wonton soup tasted like water. Not to mention all of the food they were cooking was handled by their bare hands!! That completely turned me off!! I will say that the older man behind the counter was very nice but not nice enough to cut some slack in price when Charging $1.50 for a can of no name brand soda!! He is obviously thinking about his pockets!! Don’t waste your time! There are better and cheaper hole in the wall joints!!
My order was terrible. Chicken was dried out and the noodles were disgusting. I love Chinese food and this was a total bust. My wife's food was barely edible. Then, our waitress asked if my wife wanted a refill on her soda. Seeing as it was the only good thing on the table she accepted and drank a little during the ten minutes it took our waitress to come back so I could ask for the check. Then upon receiving the check we were told the total and my card was taken. No explanation of the total or anything. Then when they brought the check I noticed a third soda charge. So, considering the service was absolutely TERRIBLE and the food was disgusting. We left. Only to be chased into the parking lot by the manager while she rudely interrupted my wife trying to put our child into her car seat and she told us then that the refills were not included (nowhere on the menu did it say anything of the sort. We checked prior to ordering the sodas) so my wife told her to move along and she muttered something and left. Worst service I've ever had in my life along with the worst Chinese food I've ever had. All this after it having been recommended from a family member who grew up in this area.
Ordered takeout on November 29, 202q and always had a good meal. Decided to try the chicken chowmein, it was pureed with some chicken thrown on top, tasted horrible and not like I've had in other restaurants. I threw it away after 2 bites. My son and husband had sesame chicken and the chicken was all dried out, pork fried rice was the same dried out...egg rolls were soaked in grease dudnt taste right either. I was sick for 2 days after eating...dont waste your money.
Gen chaos wasn't spicy, no sauce on boneless spare ribs, egg rolls to much celery, lo mien was ok. I wouldn't order there again. Food wasn't horrible just not what I typically get or expect. Two stars may be generous
This place, by far, worst Chinese food I’ve ever eaten. Pork fried rice tasted like Spanish rice, general tsos tasted like ketchup, dumplings were bland and too much dough, sweet and sour chicken might as well have been popcorn chicken from KFC, even the egg roll sucked. Decided to go here since my usual spot is closed, horrible decision. Not sure how this place could get such a star rating.
Egg rolls tasted like chopped up fried celery. The fried rice was pasty. The chicken wings were soggy. And the broccoli was not cooked. Also the fried wontons barely had meat in them. This was a horrible dinner choice. Will not order again and will share experience with friends and family. Disappointed.
Horrible.. I ordered sweet and sour pork lunch special.. the pork was overcooked, and the sauce was added in, so when I got it, it was drenched and soggy.. the pork friend rice contained no pork, overcooked also. The shrimp egg-roll was over cooked on the outside and under-cooked on the inside, gooey.. and it contained no cabbage, just celery and too much celery! The wonton soup tasted old.. horrible and overprice, VERY small portions also. Never again!!
Just picked up a lunch special and paid $16.20 for a combination lunch. Last week I got 2 lunches for this price. Waa told today that the "boss lady" raised lunch combinations to $15.00 This will be my last lunch at Engs
Dry old fried rice reheated multiple times soggy beef never seen anything like it..egg roll old dfburnt reheated multiple times..no wonder no dine in they dont want you there when you see the food
First let me say I have ordered from here about 4 times now, this time they sent the wrong food, refused to replace it, and IT WAS TERRIBLE! Asked for plain fried rice, got pork(I don't eat pork AT ALL, I only eat seafood for dietary reasons for years now). I asked for Garlic and shrimp and got hot spicy sauce(Burn your throat hot) with the smallest shrimp ever and almost all celery(Last time I ordered they were normal sized with different vegetables.) Horrible Chinese place, will never order again, wasted 20 dollars, thanks a lot Eng's!
I should have known better. I walked in and didn’t smell fresh food cooking. It smelled like an old building. The furnitures were just as old. The food tasted old as well. The cold noodles were stale. The chicken wings had hair on it and tasted like it’s been refried several times. The egg rolls were full of celery. Which should be indicated in menu. I was very surprised to see more than 15 people eating here. There is a place on broadway in port Ewen that is so much fresher and tastier. I do not recommend this establishment. It need a complete renovation in the kitchen.
Super disappointed, ordered beef chop suey, only to see about 5 or 6 pieces of beef in a pool of onion soup. Chicken fried rice tasted a little stale. Would not recommend.
Worst Chinese food I've ever had in my entire life. I stopped here on a whim to buy Chinese food for my mother's birthday. Started eating it and the chicken rice was burnt and dry, they put absolutely no vegetables in it. I also ordered sweet and sour chicken if you want to call it that. Tasted like rock hard pieces of chicken with huge chunks of tomato and uncooked green peppers thrown in with it. Absolutely disgusting. I called them to tell them I was not happy and they said to bring it back and they would refund it. The older lady who came out gave me a hard time and was not very polite and I told her I did not like the food it was gross and she said " what do you think it was Italian food". So not only was the food bad but the service was bad. They did ultimately give me a refund thank goodness.Save your money And your time do not eat here it's Just awful.
My family of 5 got takeout last night and all ended up with food poisoning. The food tasted old and was like soup. WILL NEVER GO BACK AGAIN. HORRIBLE
I ordered the Dragon and Phoenix because it’s my favorite dish. Obviously I’ve ordered it many times in the past! When I got home, my order was a small carton of white rice and a larger carton of shrimp and chicken with vegetables in a white sauce, not the container of General Tso’s that always comes with it. When I called I was gaslighted by Mr. Sit telling me, “That’s what you ordered. We sell a lot of those.” The food was soggy and tasteless, especially the chicken. I threw it out. I know what I ordered and what I got was NOT it. The carton even said “dragon phx” on it. They just lost my business.
Worst Chinese food I think we have ever had. The fried rice was brownish black, the egg rolls had huge chunks of celery, the sauce appeared to be a store bought sauce that they just pour over the different kind of whatever cheap chicken product they could find. We spent $100 and not even my dogs will eat the food. Would highly recommend going somewhere else
Very sweet staff, food is unfortunately not good whatsoever. Actually, it’s quite bad. If you want to go bc of severance, don’t. The food is probably the worst I had in a decade.
Not so good. Boneless ribs tasted like maple syrup. Chow mein was brown goopy sauce not light and fresh typical chow mein. Beef was pale tan and broccoli was mushy. Didn’t actually taste like “Chinese food”!! It was bizarre. We through it away. Positives was that The won ton soup was fine and the egg roll was good. And crab Rangoon was good.
