It's been in the neighborhood since I was a kid so that goes to show how much it's valued by the locals. They have great drinks, pastries, and sandwiches!
Solid coffee and great rotating board of fresh baked pastries each day!
Everything is good, they get creative with the snacks. Great quick coffee spot.
Love this place! I buy about 500 coffees every Sunday and take a bath in it! If you're looking for a coffee bath place, look no further!
A great little coffee shop with friendly staff. Their baked goods are really “that good.”
Amazing!! You can tell they value good service, quality coffee, and fresh food.
Great service. The coffee tasted ok, but the man behind the counter was very accommodating and sweet.
One of the best breakfast sandwiches in Brooklyn. Get the old school - you won’t be disappointed!
I feel lucky to live within a 15 min walk of their coffee, sandwiches, and baked goods
very cute local spot. pastries are delicious and staff is warm :)
Best espresso I've had in Brooklyn. And they carry George Howell coffee too.
Great coffee, friendly staff. Everything you want in your local neighborhood coffee shop!
Excellent service. I had the Southside Breakfast sandwich. Best breakfast sandwich I ever tasted
Great baked goods and coffee is delicious here. Very chill coffee joint
Awesome local coffee spot with stellar breakfast sandwiches. The 295 is killer (and vegetarian).
Everything was delicious! Loved the new school, coffee is divine.
Everything on the menu is delicious!! Great little spot for breakfast!
Nice quiet place to sit and drink coffee, and their sandwich are really good!
Southside and new school sandwiches are delicious. Eggs are scrambled perfectly.
Best latte ever. And I've had a lot to compare. Very creamy & smooth.
I judge coffee houses based on its performance on cappuccino, unless they serve a speciality coffee. I'm always on the lookout for great coffee, so naturally This place has been on my list for a long time, and now that I've gotten around to it, I'm happy to report that Their cappuccino is definitely worth a detour... And It's indeed one of the better coffees in the great city of New York, and that says a lot... * Cash only. * Never had problems finding parking. * Free WiFi. * clean bathroom. * It's close to the green-wood cemetery, grab your coffee and book, and enjoy the serenety and beauty of the cemetery. * their seasonal watermelon lemonade was not good. Pro bonus: if you think coffee could really use a cup of tea like right about now... I suppose "Chai" tea mind be the answer to your prayers... Amen!
The BEST café in South Slope. Do not miss their fresh baked pastries and breakfast sammies. Workers are always cheerful and friendly. I am hooked.
Been coming for years and this place still slaps. All the indoor seating is gone which is unfortunate but this team is slinging amazing pastries, breakfast sandos, and coffee
Best specialty coffee in the area. 3 people seem to work there in shifts. They are all extremely friendly and able baristas, one in particular consistently makes me the best cappuccinos I've ever had.
Great coffee, great pastries, great sandwiches. They used to have zapps chips too - haven't been inside since pandemic. My wife loves the chai.
First time here this morning and at the risk of sounding super cheesy, I can't wait to come back. Super tasty latte and sausage breakfast sandwich that I want to get every Saturday, on repeat. Lovely attention to detail down to the silver metal water cups. <3
Great coffee but the real stand out are the fresh baked pastries, get there early to get your pick. The line can get a little long but it's worth it
Love this local place! Small and cute, and great coffee, very friendly staff. My husband said their breakfast sandwich is to die for!!
Perfect neighborhood coffee shop. Strikes the right balance between professionally prepared drinks and casual approach. This is where you'll meet your fiancé, kids soccer coach, and find your next apartment.
I still think about the biscuit from Southside coffee. It was savory and sweet and crunchy and dense. I talk about it with friends, family, and anyone I know who likes biscuits. I hope they still make it and never stop making it!
Southside's enduring quality, staying power and neighborhood flavor have earned it heritage status in my book.
The Southside is my favorite breakfast sandwich in NYC (and I've tried a lot of places). The atmosphere is great and they have superb coffee as well!
Amazing breakfast sandwich, and great coffee! Our last stop in Brooklyn before heading back to Canada last Sunday. Couldn’t have asked for better!
Unique variations on the usual cafe fare of simple sandwiches and pastries. Seems like a great hidden place. The staff was very kind.
Not many owners understand what makes their place unique. This one does! Just the basics but well done thats why there is always a line and good vibez!
Great local spot. The staff are friendly and the plane feels like home. The coffee and tea are great. They have an iced hibiscus tea that is out of this world! The only food I've gotten are scones and muffins. All of them have been good. They have benches outside where you can sit and sip your drink. The only real downside is that they keep the place warmer than I like.
Have gone to this place for years and have never had a bad experience. Welcoming and friendly staff. Delicious coffee and sandwiches. The pastries are all homemade and fresh! The outside seating is a perfect place to sit with your pooch and do some good people watching.
Love this spot SO much; the food, coffee, and pastries are ALL sublime. I have been coming here regularly for over 5 years and have never had a bad experience. Go to: Old Skool -- Cinnamon Bun, Carrot Cake. House Blend.
My family comes here when we take our daughter to the playground, mostly in the weekend. Very friendly staff, amazing baked goods and great coffee. They accept credit cards as well (I just read cash only, but that's not the case). Love sitting outside. Dog friendly place (they have water and you can sit outside with you pet)
I set up my computer and hung out for a couple hours during a rainy day. The service was great, very friendly. The tea was great. The decor was perfect. It was a very relaxing atmosphere and allowed me to get some good work done and stay out of the rain. Highly recommended.
Great neighborhood cafe. They use Counter Culture beans which is great in my book. I usually get hot coffee or cold brew but lots of people order lattes. I go out of my way to go here compared to other places in the neighborhood (Roots, Bread & Joe, etc.).
Great people, great food. Sometimes you think food is taking a little long, that's cause it is, but when you get it oh man is it good! (I recommend the southside with pickled onions, it is absolutely delicious) Small spot, there are tables inside and benches outside. Outsdie you will run into the occasional new born, or curious puppy. Fun morning spot with great coffee, great food, and great people.
Their chai latte is one of the best around, but the real star here is the sandwiches! They're great for both breakfast and lunch, with solid vegetarian options. Oh, and don't forget the pastries! There's a large selection that rotates frequently, and they're all worth a try.
Excellent bakery and sunny morning coffee shop akin to slice a of Heaven. Sits on a little corner with the type of seating you can perch on and watch the day start in this quiet nondescript neighborhood.
South Slope neighborhood coffee bar with delicious sandwiches made-to-order. Nice little seating outside to people,-watch or sit with your dog. Friendly staff and atmosphere.
Great spot for a Sunday morning. I got a cortado and my sister got a soy latte. The cortado was perfect. My sister would have preferred coconut milk but they had almond and soy milk non dairy options only however the latte was still delicious. We split the salmon sandwich and enjoyed the combination of their creamy spread with the smoked salmon and arugula.
The coffee is great. The hot chocolate is amazing. Pastry's small vary. But great. Guest place to be productive and get work done on computers. Has outlets near seats for phones or computers. Overall Anything place 💪💪👌👏👍🙏🙏
Really great, relaxed place. Good food, but my favorite drink is the hot chocolate anytime. It's so foamy and creamy and chocolatey! The cafe is not very busy usually.
The Italian sandwich is my favorite. Not sure if it’s still on the menu and Gawddayum!! The olive tapenade!!
Wow, that was the best breakfast sandwich (the “Southside”) I’ve had in many years. I’m going back tomorrow for another 😅. The fresh brioche, the eggs, the ham, the “breakfast mayo”, the pickled onions and cheese- all incredible together. I’ve tried 2 of their scones, too, which were both excellent. I’m hard to please when it comes to breakfast, but this was outstanding.
Love their Quiche. I don't know why they sell it only on Saturday. It gets sold out so fast. Highly recommend to try it but you better line up before 8:15 am 😃
Love Southside Coffee! Their baked goods are amazing. You can tell they’re made with care and love. Follow them on instagram to see their daily menu! Hope this place sticks around forever.
BEST BISCUIT SANDWICH EVER. I have never liked a sandwich so much, ever. I would even say this is the best breakfast sandwich I have ever had, and maybe even the best Sandwich. Perfect proportions perfect biscuit perfect sauce perfect everything. I would literally commute 45 minutes again just for this. I do wish they had more seating but what can u do - it’s worth it. And the cashier refilled my water bottle full of cold ice water and was so nice about it :)
I love Southside! The barista, Michy, was so sweet to us and the pastries are delicious - their chocolate chip cookies are my favorite in the city. Such a great neighborhood spot!
BEST breakfast sandwich ever. I would even say the definitive breakfast sammy. Perfectly scrambled eggs, real ham - but thinly sliced, so your mouth doesn’t have to wrestle with it - ‘just-so’ pickled red onions, OH and the brioche! Don’t get me started. I stopped eating gluten many years ago, but I make an exception for the Southside breakfast sandwich (and for croissants, but that’s another review). It’s fluffy yet collapsible when imbued with the sandwich juices, including Southside’s creamy, dreamy coffee-infused mayo dressing. Also: Southside is the only place my husband and I drink coffee - because their Decaf still hits. I count a trip to Southside as a ‘must-do’ Brooklyn experience.
I really enjoy this spot! Excellent for people with dogs as it's window service only. Cold brew to me feels a bit more like iced coffee, it's pretty light. Breakfast sandwiches are solid. They sell dog treats for $1 as well.
Dear South Side, Thank you for having the best, most reliable, and consistently delicious pastries in NYC. I don’t know who your baker is, but they deserve all the flowers. I come here with my spouse every Saturday morning for a special treat (our favorite is the maple scone) and some coffee, and the experience sets the tone for the entire weekend. Moods boosted, brains caffeinated, we stroll the neighborhood and our troubles melt away. I work with small businesses, and I know how hard it is to stay afloat, especially these last three years. Thank you for your amazing service and products. You are the gem of the neighborhood. Sincerely, Your 7th ave neighbor <3
We stayed around the corner from Southside on a recent trip to Brooklyn. Our Airbnb host recommended it, so we stopped there our first day. Simple breakfast sandwiches done well and baked goods that are some of the best I've had. We grabbed a breakfast bar again today, and they are truly delicious. Great little spot!
Lovely staff, great atmosphere. I got in touch to get my mum a voucher and they really went the extra mile. I go to South Side regularly as it has such a nice atmosphere; so much nicer than the chain coffee shops everywhere. This cafe has soul!
Imagine sitting on a park bench during a crisp fall day, the trees are yellowish orange, and the temperature is just cold enough for you to decide to put on a sweater. Held in your hands are a warm chai latte and a small paper bag that contains a slice of the delicious chocolate chip banana bread. Perfect. Southside Coffee offers a wide range of food and drinks that are all good. In terms of food there are sandwiches, lunches, and baked goods. The sandwiches are not too unique; they are things like bacon, egg and cheese and other typical breakfast sandwiches. Even though they are not very unique they are flavorful and filling. My only complaint is that there is typically a wait of 10 minutes to get your sandwich which would normally not be problem as a cafe will have an indoor area where you can sit down, but because Southside only does takeout, you have to stand around on the sidewalk with other people who are waiting for their drink or sandwich. The lunches of Southside Coffee I have actually not tried as I usually go there in the morning. Now, for my favorite, the baked goods. The cool thing about Southside Coffees baked goods is that the menu changes every day which is shown on a sign in front of Southside. Now this would sound like a bad thing, but in reality it keeps the menu new and refreshing every single day. You can typically expect muffins, cakes, focaccia, other pastries, and the star of the show: chocolate chip banana bread. Every time I have gone to Southside I have seen chocolate chip banana bread on the menu and I can see why. The banana bread itself is delicious with the texture and flavor being perfect, this is just complimented with the big chocolate chunks randomly inserted inside different parts of the bread which adds the extra sweetness that makes the bread amazing. One other baked good that I might go for is a focaccia. Now onto the drinks. So even though coffee is in Southside Coffees name, I have embarrassingly never tried coffee from there as I am not a very big coffee drinker myself. Something I will sometimes drink when I go to Southside is a chai latte. The chai latte always has the perfect taste and sweetness with some cream on the top which adds more flavor and makes it more fun to drink. Southside also has tea and hot chocolate, both of which I can’t remember having. One complaint about Southside in general is that the prices that I have seen are pretty high compared to other cafes, though I guess this is because of the quality of all the food there. Now I will talk about the service, location, and some final thoughts. The Southside staff are always nice, as I can’t recount an experience where they haven’t been nice. One thing about Southside that I briefly mentioned before is that it is not a normal cafe with indoor seating and the only seating outdoors is a small bench. This makes it a bad place to go if you want to sit down for a while to read or work on something. Thankfully, there is nearby seating. Right next to Southside is a playground that has benches which makes it a good place to take your food and drinks. If you have a kid you can get some food and eat at the park where they can play. So in conclusion, Southside Coffee is an amazing cafe that I would give five out of five stars to.
Cute place, fair prices, amazing coffee. I give 5 stars. But will give my feedback as well. Would be super cool if there will be any healthy option on breakfast menu. Like yogurt or oatmeal or some açaí bowl or avocado toast. And another suggestion is to add some tables outside for warm weather. We were there at 11 am on Friday and many people were standing and waiting for seats. But the place is cool already! Keep it up guys. Good luck 🍀
The sweetest baristas are preparing the best brews – you’ll smell it as soon as you enter the tiny café. Try the espresso and the cortado.
I'm not a coffee drinker so can't comment on their coffee but the breakfast sandwich I had was good and the jalapeno corn muffins were excellent
Pretty meh. Not terrible but better options in the area. They have some unique stuff like oat milk.
A cool place to hangout. Coffee is so delicious with some corn muffins and the price is really worth
If you looking for that ideal coffee shop to get some work done on a quiet Sunday afternoon, this is the place for you. Friendly staff with food service till 3pm. Refills on coffee mug were $1.00
**Ordered takeout during COVID pandemic Food *New School (Bacon, eggs, miso-tahini kale, hot sauce) on seeded bread - Good; flavor explosion *Salted Chocolate Chip cookie - Good
Good coffee. They shouldn't storage the coffee near the window where the sun can see the bags. But they have very good coffee and nice service.
Good coffee and pastries, great sandwiches, lovely neighborhood spot. However, they must be missing a proper fume hood or something. Any time I spend more than ~20mins there, my clothes and hair smell strongly like burnt food for hours. At first I thought I must just have stopped in when they were prepping sandwich ingredients en masse, but it happens every time I go in.
Good atmosphere, great coffee, I have yet to try their sandwiches but I’ve hear they are amazing. My only gripe is the music choice. It’s sometimes a bit loud and out of place for a coffee shop.
The chocolate chip cookie and chocolate chip-banana bread are wildly addictive! The soft scrambled egg sandwiches are divine. There is no eat-in option unfortunately, but there are a few benches lining the bakery (no tables). Service is to-go only but worth the trip.
I had a cup of regular coffee...very good and enjoyed the corn muffin with real pieces of sweet corn...it tasted delicious. I sat inside and enjoyed being on my laptop. Great local spot. Yes where your pooch is welcomed to sit near outside front seating.
Great neighborhood coffee shop serving yummy coffee, delicious baked items and stellar breakfast sandwiches. All around good quiet coffee shop in Greenwood Heights. One downside is cash only - I have to remember to hit the ATM before I go but food and coffee make up for it.
It’s a little slow, the prices are a little high, and they don’t take debit it credit cards. Their only advantage is they are the only coffee shop for blocks around.
Coffee always good. Beans always good. But when I leave a $1 tip for a coffee or when I buy whole beans and no thank you that's minus 2 stars in my book. And yes the counter help saw me deposit the tip.
Smells great inside and i love their food options. It seems like folks love their coffee, but tea drinkers are an afterthought here. Their boxed chai is not good.
Great product, awful customer service. There’s a trend here. Who needs to put up with this? But the coffee and food is great!
Love this place but my goodness find a way to hire more people the lines are far too long and the wait for a sandwich is longer than seamless. Coffee is great but you need to figure out a way to make it more efficient most other places have by now.
The food that they make is baked fresh daily and very good. However, when I asked for a basic PSL the guy taking my order said "we don't do flavors". Pretty dismissively like they were too good to make pumpkin spice lattes in the height of fall season. Prices are expensive but not out of range for the area. The cups that they serve the coffee in spill everywhere too so you have to drink it right away to avoid spilling. Very annoying.
Not sure what's going on with this place. I ordered a breakfast sandwich. It was pre-made, sweating in its wrapper like a fast food restaurant, but less fresh. The bacon was rubbery, the cheese was congealed, it was served lukewarm and the tasteless bun was one of the ones you wonder if it's actually got any real ingredients in it. Hope it was just an off day.
Great baked goods, never fails to satisfy. Great egg sandwiches too, but wait can be really long for those. Even when you call ahead there's no system to avoid the line once you get there at the time they said the food would be ready. I wish it had a better system to avoid the wait so I can have the sandwiches more often. I also wish they would open up the inside now that we are getting vaccinated and it is getting cold!
Mediocre coffee served at a snails pace. The line wasn’t even long and it was close to a fifteen minute wait for two coffees. Very disappointing.
To me this place had an awkward vibe. They don't seem too into the concept and their flow is inefficient. There is usually a line and they pass you the coffee where you pay, causing annoying interactions with people behind you
disliked 2nd visit because of the so called barrister first name begins w/ "A" who opened late never smiled acted surly clearly didn't wish to be there made serious'harassment' acquisition absurd.. when I asked if she was enjoying such a lovely summer morning after all? NOTE this is a cafe in a quiet nice family oriented neighborhood 1st visit, barrister first name begins w/ "B{now on vacation totally lovely sweet nice helpful w/ wifi intent advice excellent vibes.. I mentioned this to the owner"J" who charmingly replied "I brought the sunshine" (when telling I was visiting a friend the neighborhood..+ what a nice cafe) Will I return? NO life too short w/ too many OTHER 'clean well lighted places' awaiting
Perfectly good coffee + treats, but it is such a bummer that they move so slowly. I regularly have to wait 10+ minutes for an americano.
Good pastries but not worth the attitude you get at the window
Went in for a nice cup of coffee as I waited for a friend to join me. I received a phone call from my friend to tell me he was on his way and I was asked by the clerk there to please not use my phone in the store that people were trying to work. It was “store policy”. I asked if I mistakenly walked into a library and he says, out of “respect to the community” we don’t allow phone usage in the store. Most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard and I believe it was RACIALLY motivated. Last time I ever step foot in there and anyone else I know. I’ll be sure to post this on face book. By the way the coffee was crappy....
Only went here once and once was all it took. Rude rude rude, as other reviews have also said. There are better coffee shops in the area. Don’t waste your money or time.
I just wanna say the treats that they have are absolutely delicious. However unfortunately I won’t be buying from here anymore. I don’t know if all the staff are like this, however I had a horrible encounter with a employee & she was being very discriminatory towards me. I didn’t already feel comfortable being that I was the only colored & every time I went to buy something I would get weird looks. Long story short she didn’t accept my 100 bill, but last time I came another employee did. Now today again I passed by & just wanted to ask another employee to see if they were going to say the same thing. The employee mentions “ it usually depends on the the person or the amount of cash we have but we usually do” …. Hearing those words broke my heart honestly. However yeah I would not recommend this place to anyone colored.
Nasty attitude from the cashier and the basrista. 10min wait outside to just order and 15min of wait outside to get coffee and it’s 15 degrees outside. Small latte and cinnamon roll $14. They started to block the entrance during Covid and it was understandable then, but now they think they are too good to let people in. It’s ridiculous
I was a frequent customer and particularly in the pandemic, made a point to tip 20% or more. I went largely for convenience, as the coffee is tinny and sandwiches not great. The manager didn't like my coffee order (more coffee, less milk, not too hard) so essentially made it clear that my business wasn't welcome. Oh well. Now I frequent places that make better coffee.
I’ve been here a couple of times but I’ve noticed the coffee and service just aren't what they used to be. The small Americano is seriously tiny compared to a regular small, and the coffee itself is just average at best. I asked for some honey for my coffee and the lady just shook her head like I was asking for the moon. I mean, I get that it wasn't a complimentary option, but they could have just charged me for it..it’s a bummer this is the closest cafe from my place, but I guess I will have to find another one.
Regrettably, Southside has undergone a decline from its previous charm as a coffee shop. The current experience is marred by extended lines, awkward service, and inconsistent coffee quality, reflecting a departure from customer-centric practices. For a more satisfying experience, consider exploring alternative options in the neighborhood such as Grumpy, Variety, or Hungryghost.
Great coffee, however little regard to wait times. There was a line of 8 people and the cashier was chatting about their day with a customer. I left after 10 minutes went by and only three people were served.
It's a walk up/walk through shop offering overpriced egg and cheese sandwiches @$10 that are premade so forget about having your bread toasted. The coffee was $6 but tasted wrost than the coffee cart by the subway. Also the cashier girl has bad attitude and doesn't care if you want your coffee large or small or bread toasted. Do better guys for the price your chargin.
Southside Coffee used to be our absolute favorite neighborhood spot — our go-to place for morning coffee, breakfast sandwiches for me and my husband, and the little treats our four kids always looked forward to. We’ve loved supporting them over the years and felt like part of the family… until this morning. My daughter had a long 4-hour gymnastics practice and insisted she couldn’t eat anywhere else but SouthSide coffee shop. We knew the weekend hours were a little later, but we arrived at 7:50am, just 10 minutes before the official 8:00am opening. The tall red-haired cashier was already behind the counter, yet he refused to sell us even a simple slice of banana bread. We explained politely — we weren’t asking for a sandwich, not even a coffee that needed to be made, just one piece of cake sitting right there on the tray. But instead of a little kindness or understanding, we got coldness and attitude. Unfortunately, we had to rush off to catch a train, so waiting wasn’t an option. Park Slope is such a friendly, welcoming community. That’s exactly why this interaction felt so out of place. I understand rules are rules — but when you’ve got a loyal family of regulars standing in front of you, sometimes going the extra mile for them is what sets a neighborhood business apart. This morning, sadly, that spirit was missing.
The cashier needs a serious attitude adjustment. When I asked for a sleeve for my piping hot coffee, she was incredibly rude and condescending. South Slope is known for its friendly and laid-back atmosphere, and this cashier's behavior was a major let-down.
This review is for the owner's eyes. Your barista with braces and the big one with short hair are extremely rude and condescending. We have been loyal patrons for a long time and love your food. However, those baristas' attitudes and treatment of us whenever they are working has completely turned us off. After dropping the kids off at school, we walk by. If those people are working we just continue walking because she turns your delicious food into a hurtful experience. Get rid of them. Thet truly deserve it.
