Recensioni di Cartwright's Ranch House Denton
Most likely the best restaurant in Denton. The chicken fried steak is absolutely heavenly and that could be said for just about everything on the menu. No matter what you order, you’ll leave satisfied and full. Absolutely huge portions! Not too often you get both huge portions and amazingly delicious food. My wife and I make it a point to stop here any time we go out to the square.
We Love Cartwrights on the square! The owners are very involved in the community and just a great family. The atmosphere reflects the characters behind the scenes and it’s just a great place to eat!
Best Breakfast place in Denton! We have Breakfast here every Sunday if not out of town.
Their fried pickles are amazing, they give you a huge tray of them!! I love their spicy ranch. Service is always good, even if sometimes there can be a wait. It's worth it. Menu is southern comfort food, and they always pack your plate. You're going to be rolling out of there. I couldn't wait to dig in to take a before picture, sorry about the pic with half eaten food!
I have been to Cartwright's many times and have never been let down. I always recommend this place to family and friends when they are looking for a great place to eat. It's right in the heart of Denton so if you are looking to eat and have fun afterwards this place is 10/10. Sometimes the servers aren't all smiles but we all have our days so I get it.
Attempting to find an alternative to the egg and I, we chose to try Cartwright's Ranch house cafe due to mentions of their fantastic biscuits and gravy during a Google search. I wasn't disappointed and neither was the family. Does a Philadelphia steak omelette talk to your taste buds? Wife and daughter ordered those with their customized sides as pictured and were very pleased with authenticity of filling and texture of eggs. I had to have three eggs, ranch potatoes and biscuits with sausage gravy so I went all the way with the Big Bend. It has additions of cheese, ham, sausage and bacon piled high. Good lord! I'm a hearty eater when I have an opportunity to take my time at breakfast, which is why I only get it on the weekends. This did not disappoint in areas of quality or quantity. I did find the gravy to be a little thin for my taste and lacking flavor, which could be corrected with a little salt and pepper but it's to my own and was somewhat made up for with a generous portion of sausage within. The restaurant is located on Elm Street just on the edge of the square so you may have a little more of a walk after parking than in a lot but certainly not a big deal and you get to walk past a few interesting local shops. Wait staff was very knowledgeable about their menu, prompt in service and our particular waitress was sweet and personable. You won't be disappointed if you go in hungry or are looking for a diversified menu with healthy items as they literally have it all.
I love everything about this place. The service is awesome and the space is great. Best pancakes ever!
Emma was the BEST waiter! Took great care of us, was super quick, and made sure we had everything we needed! The food was amazing! I recommend this place to everyone, we will be back!
Oh how I enjoyed the country fried steak and mashed taters. The service was good and im sorry I forgot my servers name, she was very attentive even though she was visibly busy. It was my first visit but by no means my last. Looking forward to trying something else, though it will be hard knowing the CFS was on point. Happy eating, now Go get your grub on
Cartwright Ranch House in Denton is fantastic. Great food with real Texas flavor, friendly staff who actually seem happy you’re there, and a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. It’s quickly become one of my go-to spots and I highly recommend it.
I recently had a shoulder surgery and was in a sling and they cut my burger in half so I could eat it easily! Staff were super friendly and helpful. I highly recommend!
The Best Chicken Fried Steak Ever! The Chicken Fried Steak is as big as the plate. I've had the opportunity to eat @ Cartwright's numerous times. Never been disappointed. The owner's, John & Marla are wonderful people. The staff is great as well. My favorite: Chicken Fried Steak. My 2nd Favorite: Chicken Fried Steak!
Acting on the recommendation from someone who resides in Denton, my sister and I decided to have lunch at Cartwright's Ranch House, located across from the old historic courthouse. Let me tell you it was a good decision. There's a lot to choose from on the menu, including all day breakfast, burgers, sandwiches, salads, soups & entrees from meatloaf to fried Catfish. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak with mashed potatoes and fried okra. My sister decided on the breakfast item of Chicken Fried Steak, two eggs over medium, breakfast potatoes and a biscuit. This was home style cooking at its BEST. Neither one of us could finish our chicken fried steaks, although we tried. Service was friendly and helpful ( Thanks Josh). Next time I'm in the Denton area I will be stopping in at Cartwright's. 👍
A great find. The service was wonderful, the menu had lots of options and the prices were a good value We will be back
What I learned about Cartwrights Ranch House: ✨they had their 10 year anniversary this year. ✨they’re known for their “famous chicken fried awesomeness” (including chicken fried steak). ✨they serve breakfast all-day. ✨the prices are super affordable and you get a lot of food! ✨everything is made from scratch, the true homestyle cookin’ way. ✨the owner is super involved in the community and has been the President of the #DentonMainStreet board the past couple years (finishing his term). We most recently ordered the 2x2x2 and the Bat Masterson for breakfast - both under $8 each! From old fogies sippin’ on their coffee while reading the newspaper to college kids simply wanting a delicious, affordable place to eat on the #downtowndenton square, this place welcomes all people and their food comforts all souls.
Holy moly! This place has the biggest and best chicken fry in Texas. The diner is cozy and staff is super friendly. They really make you feel right at home. The appie portions are huge!!! I had the rib eye and it was seasoned to perfection and cooked perfectly. Tender and juicy. The beer is served in an icy cold mug.
Exceptional food and service, it's worth the trip for the menu names alone. Like most things Denton there's a rustic flavor of old time Texas a quiet quality and good cheer. Best pancakes I've had since some insanely expensive ones in north Dallas at a restaurant opening. This is the diner of my youth and the nostalgic walk was delightful. If you can't find your favorite thing on the menu they can probably make it. Renee was amazing server and the perfect blend of attention and leaving you alone. Real food, fair prices and the funniest menu names I've seen in a very long time. Lonesome Dove to Bonanza with a sprinkling of childhood TV staples. You really can't go wrong here at Cartwright's even on a very rainy morning.
This place was great, I had the Chicken Fried Steak a mashed potatoes with Okra, came out very hot. Portions were great, service was great, will be back!
I LOVE Cartwright's!!! There's nothing better than seeing groups of people meeting for breakfast and listening to the friendly banter. I'm glad that this place allows for people to come feel comfortable and be so well taken care of. The wait staff is incredible here and I always feel well taken care of. I stopped in for breakfast (I had the Wyatt Earp) The pancakes were so good and I enjoyed everything that accompanied my meal. It's a great place to come and enjoy good comfort food. FYI: I am not compensated in any way by this business and I gladly pay for any food/services. I'm sharing my opinion freely and hope you will have a good experience with this business.
My husband treated me to a wonderful meal at the this wonderful restaurant. The service , food and staff most pleasant. I have not had great true southern food in many years. I definitely give the chefs a huge thumbs up and thank you for serving great amazing food!!! I recommend anyone visiting family or traveling, make this a stop and enjoy!
Went to breakfast with friends and wanted to try a new breakfast place and I was super impressed! The staff was so on top of drinks and making you feel comfortable. The eggs on my meal were cooked to perfection and the corn tortilla were super crisp despite the amazing sauce covering it. My friends said that there meal was super good and that nothing was undercooked or overcooked. Again, absolutely loved the staff, they were just so sweet and bent over backwards to get you what you needed. If you want a good breakfast place to get a quick bite or to gather with friends, this place is perfect.
We just had the opportunity to eat here again. Great again. They are doing a great job staying safe. Glad to have them open. Gravy was excellent! Everything we ordered was awesome. The portions ate huge and a great value. If you are looking for a good breakfast spot look no further. Service was super friendly. Emilee was fantastic.
A great place for breakfast all day. I had the Migas and it was fabulous. The service was good and friendly. The only downside was that they were mopping and squeegeeing the floors in the dining room (around our table) while us and other folks were eating. I would prefer they do this after hours.
Food was Good and also was Hot, definitely a Plus! WOULD DEFINITELY go Back! Highly recommend this Restaurant! Portions and price were both reasonable! OWNER, Keep up the Good Work and don’t change a Single Thing, you’ve got it going on! ❤️😂👍👍👍
Great place for a burger and I expect from the looks of other orders all the food is good!!! Open dining and sit where you want makes it easy to find a table that fits your needs and party side. Fun atmosphere with many paintings and local items on the mural. As a first timer I got the full menu tour with highlights and favorites... our server Easter gave excellent recommendations (which I took)! My go to burger is a mushroom & swiss... it was awesome (the bun was incredibly soft and fresh)!
The staff here are so courteous and attentive! I loved the employee who helped me! Thank you for the kind service. I was going to try the chicken fried steak but had a last minute change of heart and went for the chicken fried chicken instead. It was delicious, and the fried okra was amazing. I would absolutely recommend this spot and will put this back on my list if I'm visiting Denton again someday. Thanks for a great meal.
Someone get me a wheelbarrow! Gonna need to wheel my butt out of here after I eat all this dang food!!! This is truly Texas cooking. Parker house rolls, real mashed potatoes and gravy. Fried okra done right, and NOT REHEATED IN THE MICROWAVE! Lol. Ok so here is the skinny on this joint. When I say truly Texas they serve beer in a bottle for $3 at lunch and dinner. They have a good and fresh louissianne sweet tea. Small cubed ice. (Think Sonic Ice). They serve dishes like chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak. They are covered with white Texas country gravy (peppered) and the customer is given a choice of two sides. My hubby chose Mac and cheese and green beans, while I went for the fried okra and mashed taters. Hubby loved the chicken fried chicken. The batter is a Texas flour favorite. Very simple but done to perfection. He said it was cooked just right. Not too rubbery, and not dripping with soggy and mess. My chicken fried steak was done right. Pure Texas old country style. The steak is pounded flat then battered and fried. It was done exactly as it should be. The only downside to this place is the bathrooms as they are a little gross, and I wasn’t a fan of the tablecloths. This is old school country Texas eating, so don’t expect black tie. It is cowboy boots and jeans. Lol. Maybe a Budweiser too. In total we spent around $60 for dinner for three adults with tax and tip included. You are going to see a picture of the fried pickles and I didn’t really like them. I LOVE pickles, but this mix was tasting overly salty and bitter to me. I think next time I would get the fried onions. We caught a few of those in the pickle basket and those were yummy. I think the pickles they are using are not the best. I am looking at you, Best Maid. Maybe if they change their pickles I would try it again. I didn’t take off any stars because it didn’t really change my experience. It was still fun, unique and I loved the home cooking. Their sweet tea brought me back to old school family reunion days from times long gone. I would five out of five eat here again.
We found ourselves in the Denton area today at lunchtime and decided to find a place to eat around Denton Square. It was an absolutely GORGEOUS day and a lot of people were out and about, enjoying the many activities that the Square provides for their community!! We decided on Cartwright's Ranch House, which we had not tried yet. The restaurant was busy which is a good sign that the food was going to be good. I picked the Chicken Fried Chicken with mac and cheese, dinner salad and a roll. Taylor picked the Fried Catfish with slaw, dinner salad and a roll. Everything was delicious. We ate outside and were entertained by a local street performer playing music. We definitely recommend this area of town for a day filled with a lot of things to see and do!!
We had orders of the chicken fried steak and brisket nachos, very very good !!
Ate here with my family for my birthday. It was long overdue. Have lived here 12 years, and now I'm a huge fan. We got chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, and a steak with sides. I tried them all and was so impressed. The steak was amazing, and we're a big steak family. I totally understand why the chicken fried chicken and chicken fried steak is so popular too! Mac and cheese was fab, and got nice fresh salads. Great service and atmosphere, thank you guys for such a lovely evening.
Had breakfast here and the vibes were calm and homey. Price and size of our plates were perfect. We left very satisfied, definitely a good place to go and have a nice meal.
Great country home atmosphere! Aweso.e service, excellent food and big portions! First time to visit but not the last. Found it on Google maps and the chicken fried steak is the best I have had in over 30 years! You will not regret eating at Cartwright's!
The food was delicious. My wife and I split the country fried steak, and instead of just bringing an extra plate, the kitchen cut the steak in half and breaded each side so it was basically 2 steaks and served it on separate plates. The server was very friendly. The restaurant is decorated great. Parking is a little rough, but it's down town so that's expected and not the restaurants fault at all. Price was a little high, but even McDonalds is high now.
We loved, loved our food and experience at Cartwright’s. I got the chicken fried steak, which they are apparently known for. And that’s well deserved. The gravy was super good, the chicken friend steak was good, the fries amazing, the roll delicious. With such a large portion, my wife graciously helped me eat it—which she was more than happy to do! Before we even left, told lots of people that this is a place they need to visit next time they go out! Oh, and we had great, speedy service!
Stopped by around noon for breakfast and was not disappointed! We got seated immediately, I had the caramel macchiato which was honestly better than some coffee shops. Very impressed! I had the migas and my boyfriend had the chicken fried chicken burrito. Both plates were very filling- we had leftovers- and delicious. Waitress was attentive and kind. Loved this place and highly recommend.
Hefty portions, burgers taste great, fried chicken looks amazing. Appetizers are shareable sizes, the chili fries were amazing. Very friendly servers, very american themed place, kitchen is visible and open which is always a good indicator that they are clean and very transparent with the costumer. Blue cheese burger was no joke, they filled that thing to the brin with blue cheese! The mushrooms didn’t fit the my wife’s burger, they don’t play around with portions here. Highly recommend for diner/american food
Tonight we traveled down to the Denton square for a good ol’ home style meal at Cartwright's Ranch House. We were welcomed by the friendly staff as we looked for a place to sit (It was seat yourself). Once we found the perfect table it did not take long for Mel to start taking care of us. She was friendly and took good care of us. She even allowed Mike to make adjustments to his meal. Aimee ordered the grilled chicken with a salad (no croutons with ranch) and loaded mashed potatoes as sides. The chicken was tasty, tender, and juicy and Aimee had nothing left to bring home. Mike ordered the Cattleman’s Steak and eggs. Instead of a side and biscuit he requested bacon and sausage. The steak was a 10oz ribeye medium rare and came out just like Mike likes them. Mike got his eggs sunny side up and they paired well with the steak. The sausage was different but very tasty and then there is bacon and bacon is always great. You can always count on CartWright’s for a great meal. Make sure you add them to your list of local restaurants to support. The owner is super involved in the community and just an all around great guy.
Cartright’s Home Cooking truly hit the spot! The food was absolutely delicious — full of flavor but not overly salty, which I really appreciated. There was a great variety of options, so everyone in my group found something they enjoyed. The portion sizes were generous too — we even had leftovers! On top of that, the prices were very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. Definitely recommend if you’re looking for satisfying, home-style comfort food.
First consumers turned repeat diners! Some of the best food I've ever had. The service was phenomenal. I want to say our waitresses name was Mel. She knew everything there was to know about the menu. She was attentive, kind, funny & patient. We truly enjoyed our experience. See you again soon.
Here’s a review based on your experience: Homey Vibes and Delicious Comfort Food in Dallas I recently visited this cozy spot in Dallas on a Sunday morning with a group of friends, and while we did have to wait a bit, the line moved faster than expected. The restaurant gives off a homey, welcoming vibe, with tables set close together, making it feel lively and bustling. One unique touch is that, as you make your way to the back, you walk right past the kitchen and can watch the chefs in action—a cool detail, though it does make you hope they’re keeping everything spotless since it’s all out in the open! Once we were seated, our server greeted us promptly, and we found ourselves faced with a large menu, which made choosing a little tough. I ended up going with the fried catfish, accompanied by mac & cheese and fried okra. It seemed like a popular choice, and I quickly saw why—the catfish was perfectly seasoned and fried to a beautiful crisp. The tartar sauce and hot sauce they provided for dipping added just the right kick. The mac & cheese was good, though not standout, and the fried okra, while decent, could use a bit more flavor. Overall, our entire group was happy with the experience. We finished every bite, which speaks volumes! I only wish I’d taken pictures of the food because the presentation was lovely, but I did capture the empty plates at the end—a testament to how much we enjoyed it. I’d love to come back and explore more of the menu.
Wrangle the family and kick off the spurs to have a chuck wagon meal. From the Chicken fried steak to the US Marshal hash the meals will put a shiny star on your chest! Texas is big country and at Cartwright’s the plates are as big as the state. The staff is the nicest west of The Atlantic! Never a hungry traveler will there be with the awesomeness of this chef! The biscuits are better than a trail blazer and the sizzle burger will be the reward for your hard work! Fantastic place!
This is a great little local restaurant. The food was great. Had there all day breakfast at lunch. It was 2 open face biscuits covered in sausage gravy and scrambled eggs, real crumbled bacon and sausage. I got the skillet potatoes on the side. They are also good but I don't normally like them in my food. Personal choice, I guess. The wife had chicken fried steak and grits. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Oh and the people are very friendly.
The food was excellent. Both my friend and I got all you can eat catfish. The fried pickles are really good. If I lived closer I would eat here frequently. Parking is really difficult and the city is not a place I would want to spend an extended amount of time. Most interestingly I saw a person eat a pancake with their hands which is not something I have seen before and hopefully won't see again.
Food is amazing. I can see why it is so popular and that there is always a wait to get in. Definitely will go back awesome chicken fried steak.

This is a great place. Food was great. Service was really good. Wife loved her mimosa. steak and egg brunch. We will go here again.
Ordered the CFS (Chicken Fried Steak if you’re not from around these parts), full not half portion, with a side of fried okra and black-eyed Peas: dang that full order is a huge piece of meat, pounded thin with a light batter that did not slide off when you cut into the CFS. The okra appeared to be freshly battered and fried, not out of a bag, and the black-eyed peas were tasty. Staff are friendly and attentive without being annoying.
Stopped in for a bite with the spouse. Hope (waitress) was great and watching the crew work was amazing. They helped each other out by putting orders together, calling out was needed while at the order window (salad, syrup, ranch etc.). Staff waiting for their order to come to the window, knocked out getting the extra items ready for the waiter/waitress at the order window. Catfish and Mushroom Swiss Burger was great.
Great home style cooking place right on the square. Very clean inside. Staff was friendly and the food was amazing. I had the huevos rancheros with their in-house red chili sauce. Sauce was delicious the only thing I would have changed is spice level. If I could have had a choice I would have liked the sauce spicy. It had great flavor though and I would go back.
I wanted some Chicken and Waffles and this place was supposed to have some. Sadly it was not on the menu. So we tried some Chilaquiles and Huevos Rancheros. Sadly I wish we had hunted down some Chicken and Waffles. The Chilaquiles were dry and didn't have much flavor. I did like the OJ that I ordered with the meal. The eggs that were ordered with the Huevos Rancheros were supposed to be over medium and were somewhat over easy. Oh and the restroom could have used a cleaning smelled a lot like urine. The service was good and friendly, tho they did forget to give us utensils.
This place has decent chicken fried steak and the sides were good. The service was ok. The atmosphere was ok as well. Good location but it could have used a little more decor.
This was the first time eating at Cartwright"s. It was a Saturday and very busy!! They serve a variety of food with breakfast all day. My daughter and I ordered the 2x2x2 (2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 pancakes), my husband ordered the chicken fried steak, and my son had the bacon burger. All in all the food was good. My pancakes were a little dense, but I still ate most of them. My husband enjoyed the chicken fried steak. If we have an opportunity to return, I want to try their fried chicken since the back of their t-shirts said they are famous for it. This little restaurant is located in downtown Denton on the square across from the old courthouse. It's a very cute and busy local area! There are lots of restaurants and boutiques around the square. Yet it can be difficult to find parking at times. I highly recommend visiting if you are ever in Denton, Texas. Note: We ordered 4 meals and 4 drinks, and the bill was $74 before tip. The floors of the restaurant were dirty, yet the place was very busy, so giving grace for possibly not having time to clean it (giving 3 stars for the atmosphere and 4 stars overall).
Great breakfast/ lunch place! Never have been disappointed! Chicken fried chicken- hamburger with sweet potato fries- & all you can eat catfish are our faves! Breakfast served all day! Walking through the kitchen- serving area is a little different. But that is just Nick picking. Definitely recommend this place! On the square in Downtown Denton.

I should have read the catfish po boy came with coleslaw on the sandwich instead of as a side. The chicken and bacon jalapeño appetizer was disappointing as each piece was the size of my thumbnail. My wife did not like her food either.
I’ve been coming here for years—at least 20 visits—and this used to be one of my favorite brunch spots in Denton. My friend and I always ordered the same thing and genuinely loved it for the portion sizes, quality, and price. Unfortunately, over time we’ve seen it go downhill. I completely understand that prices go up with inflation, but shrinking portions while raising prices doesn’t make sense unless the restaurant is just cutting corners. I used to get a large chicken fried chicken with gravy, hashbrowns, eggs, and a biscuit for about $13, plus a pint-glass mimosa for $3. Now the chicken fried chicken is palm-sized, the hashbrown portion is noticeably smaller, and the meal is $17. The mimosas are smaller too—and $5. It’s disappointing to leave brunch still hungry at a place that used to serve generous plates. Unless the quality and portions go back to what they were, my friend and I will have to find a new brunch spot in Denton. I work in hospitality and regularly recommend local restaurants to hotel guests, but for now I’ll be guiding them toward other breakfast options.
My date said his chicken fried steak was delicious. It was certainly huge! I only gave food 3 stars because there were no gluten free options. My omelet was rather thin and dry. The green beans were tasty if a little greasy. Beer offering is very limited but they do have shiner long necks.
I'm sad that I didn't get pictures of the food, it did look good, but the lack of options for dietary restrictions, and lack of concern for making sure anyone who has these restrictions is safe makes it difficult for us to come back. The atmosphere is that of an old vintage chowdown like the ones we all grew up with, it's clean and inviting. The waitress was great, and the coffee was as well, it was the highlight of our visit. Our waitress was attentive and very good, I wish that they were a bit more understanding of the menu when you go to order after you tell them about the sensitivities...but again, old school place.....this is probably just not gonna happen. My daughter and wife have sensitivity to gluten and food dyes, so we have to order a certain way, and they have no real options on the menu to actually know what you're getting. So we went with common options that in most cases won't have either in them. My daughter and son split the chilaquiles, as the pancakes and toast are not an option, but corn tortillas are generally gluten free. Unfortunately, here they are multicolored which means they have food dyes. We didn't notice this initially because we thought they were tomatoes since they were red and mixed into the food, Cartwright's offered to split the plate in the kitchen so that it wouldn't have to be done at the table, this was very kind and we appreciate it.... But it also means that we aren't going to notice because the plate isn't in front of us. So both of them ate a majority of it before we figured it out. We both got an omelette, it was stuffed and looked tasty. It wasn't until I was about halfway through where I figured out it wasn't just eggs in the mixture, they use pancake batter, similar to IHOP to make it easier to cut and look more appealing. That may be fine for a majority of folks, but pancake batter is a no-no for us... So not only did it take me out of ketosis, it made my wife have hives and itch all day. Overall, I don't like that I spent 70 bucks to feed my family (5) and felt so unsatisfied. The place is cool, but the owners and managers seem to be mostly concerned with profit margin and volume instead of pure, fresh ingredients and accommodating anyone who is not part of the "normal" American diet. That's totally fine, they have a right to do so, just wanna make sure I leave this review so that others who may see the rating understand that while it's a solid establishment, it's not for everyone. If you have no restrictions and love a good biscuit and gravy, this is your place.

Standard diner grub, with a Tex Mex twist. Prompt service and fast preparation allow them to turn a crowd so that there is no wait. If chicken fried steak is your think, donMt miss this enormous …
This place offers giant portions, but the quality was not the primary focus of the food. We ordered delivery and got the chicken strips and chicken fried steak. We were initially impressed …
I had scrambled eggs which were undercooked hash browns which were your basic cheap hash browns bacon which I don't eat so brought home for the dogs and a biscuit which is really small but probably…
I'm rating food from previous visits and it has always been good. Today, Sunday, May 4, 2025, we were seated promptly at a table within arms reach of the hostess. We sat for over 5 minutes and no one else ever came to even take a drink order or even say they'd be there soon. Mind you, there were numerous open tables. It was NOT busy. We left without so much as acknowledgement from anyone. The hostess told us to have a good day? Really? After having zero service? We will not be back and we've gone here for years. Very disappointed.
Delivery order, breakfast chicken fried steak burrito. I lived in Denton a few years ago and I always brag on the food. This is the 3td spot I’ve ordered/went to since being back after 3 years away , that just doesn’t taste the same and isn't prepared the same way. This use to be a chicken fried steak ROLLED in a burrito, rolled tight ,with the best gravy (the best) on the side. This was loose, chopped chicken, no seasoning (you can count the pepper flakes) , and no side of gravy some cheese sauce (I didn’t ask for that substitute). Disappointed all the way around. I guess everything is changing out here in Denton, even the food I use to brag about. I can’t see myself recommending or coming back to a few places out out here in Denton anymore. Sorry
This was my first time eating here. The fried pickles were amazing! I have never had this before. I ordered the pork chop dinner with the loaded baked potato. The pork chop was good, but the potato was cold, so cold the butter wouldn't melt, same with the person I was eating with. It actually looked like yesterday's leftovers. I would try this place again, but probably for breakfast.
I REALLY wanted to like this place. It’s downtown Denton, nice view of the courthouse and courtyard with huge windows. What’s not to love? Well, that about sums it up. Nice decor, rustic, laid back. Very “Dentonesc”. But that’s it. As soon as you walk in the tables are basically on top of you, where nobody is there to greet you and you just have to weed through them to seat yourself. We were handed our menus and drink orders taken and then our waitress disappears. I guess maybe she thought we needed an abnormal amount of time to read the menu. Ordered a burger, soup salad combo and, of course, the “crown jewel”, a chicken fried steak. Maybe 6 tables in the whole place at 6:30 for dinner. I’m about to tell you why. The sandwiches were good. Chicken salad and turkey club. Two great staples and that might be all they are standing on. Burger meat so thin and bland. Bun was falling apart so you tell it had seen fresher days. Well let’s get to the good part… Well, maybe the “not good” part. The chicken fried steak. YIKES. No flavor whatsoever. No seasoning, the steak was tough and the breading; I could barely cut it with a steak knife it was so rubbery. Ordered mashed potatoes and Mac and cheese. The Mac and cheese is usually the disappointment but that turns out to be the only edible thing on the plate. The mashed potatoes were typical, just add water” and of course, there never enough added, I actually had a 1/4 stick of butter that my potatoes were sitting on top of, cool idea if the potatoes were actually hot. Then they change over $3 for a soda. Wow. That’s a bit much but I could see why. Before I took even three drinks of my Dr Pepper, the waitress had already brought me a new one. This one hurt my heart because I could see this place with such potential not being in business in a few years.
If you are looking for meat and pretty bad service, this is the place. There are no gluten free options, no vegetarian options, nothing at all fresh to speak of and the wait staff are borderli…
Went here just for dessert. While I was waiting visited the restroom. Let's just say I almost left before we got our food. The entire restaurant is dirty, trash everywhere. The toilet in the restr…
Was craving steak, and decided on Cartwright's based on the google reviews and also they won best something or other in 2023 in the City of Denton. Went there and sat down. The server was nice and fast. We ordered a pair of ribeye steaks, one medium, one medium rare. We also had chips and queso. The queso was very runny. The taste was barely there. When the steaks came out, I was immediately disappointed. The steaks were small, they were not seared, and did not look right. I started cutting thru mine which was medium rare. It was not even medium rare. I cut a piece, which was very difficult to cut thru, and put it in my mouth, .. it just didn't taste right. I had to spit it out into my napkin. I called the server over and she took the steak back to cook some more. When it came back out, one side was seared but not the other. I went ahead and tried a second piece. It just tasted like raw meat with no seasoning. I didn't even try the rest of it, and I focused on enjoying the chips and runny watery queso. We asked for a to go box and put the rest of my steak, and my wife's steak in it. The sides were awful too. Broccoli did not have a good flavor, and the loaded mashed potatoes were awful. The mashed potatoes were like goop, and the toppings cold. The cheese never even got warm. I had one small taste and left it on the table. As soon as we walked out, I ordered a medium ribeye steak from another place in the area. When I got home I opened it up and put it side by side. You tell me which one you'd rather have. These steaks costs the same! I will not be back to Cartwright's. The server was nice and fast but the food is hands down the worst steak and mashed potatoes I have ever had.
My family and I sat there for almost 25 minutes and not one server came to help us, while multiple tables around us were being attended to, getting drinks and service with no problem. We were completely ignored. When someone finally approached, it still took so long that we never even received our drinks, so we decided to leave. At that point it was clear our table wasn’t a priority. I hate to say it, but the experience honestly felt like racial profiling. Watching everyone else get normal service while we were treated like we didn’t exist was uncomfortable and disrespectful. If this place only knows how to treat certain customers with respect, people should know that before wasting their time coming here. Would rate 0 stars
Construction noise was ridiculous, the food tasted like everything came from a very low grade discount store. Ordered breakfast for myself and my friend we are both wishing we would have went to waffle hous, would have been cheaper. The sausage seemed like it was very low grade also over cooked and the grits wasn't done very watery, weak coffe. All this was on 03/06/26
Nobody at our table enjoyed our meal. Contrary to the reviews the food was greasy and salty. Portion sizes were good, but it doesn't matter when you take the majority of the food "to go" only to throw it away. Our waiter was nice, however, so that was a plus. Probably won't be coming back. Edit: The two of us who ordered chicken have now become sick.
