Absolutely great breakfast burritos. They're rolled tacos are also great. Honestly, I go here more than I probably should 😅.
Haven't been here in about 24 years. Food is still good, not bomb like it used to be. I have a question for the internet. Why does a California burrito only come with potato, cheese, and pico. When it was invented 25ish years ago they called it that because of the Avocado. Now you have to add avocado to the California burrito. Just not right, false advertising. I think it should be called the Idaho potato burrito now. Still tasty when you add guac like it should already have.
The best breakfast burritos! And large. We split one between the two of us and are full! Fast friendly service and a drive through to boot. Great prices. That's about all you can ask of a taco shop. Easy to get in and out, delicious food, great prices, and friendly happy people.
Of you want a late or urly food .... this is the spot!!!! Try their Chile Verde !!!! It is fire 🔥!!!!
I loveee this place!! Everything i try is good! I live about 4 freeway exits away from them and i always make the trip if we’re eating mexican food. I will simply drive past every other spot! They are worth the drive and the wait for fresh food every time!
Great taco shop in Santee. Better to eat in than take out due to the freshness of the food. Love the ceviche and all the original taco shop items
I hired them to cater my wedding this past Sunday, roughly 130 people. The food and staff was amazing! They were set up and ready to go on time. They were all dressed professionally for such occasion. I got nothing but great reviews from all my guest.
Best beef tacos on the planet! I crave them because they are so good. My mouth is literally watering just thinking about them. Prices are very fair, probably a little under the neighborhood average. Staff is great, attentive and respectful. I don't think they have ever messed up my order. It's a drive thru and opened 24hrs so it's a great place for a late night snack. I personally don't like their breakfast burritos but their shredded beef, rice, beans, enchiladas, quesadillas and hot sauces are wonderful.
Delicious Carne Asada Fries & Chips! We've been back 3 times already and loved those 2 items especially for a Couple that's hungry late in the evening
Great place for some late night food. Loved the fish burrito and horchata.
I have always come here since I was about 8, food is always so good! I've been for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and my mom and I used to get "2 in the morning tacos" when she would visit. The meat is fresh and the rolled tacos are always perfectly crunchy! 10 stars
El Compadre Taco Shop is a hidden gem! Their delicious food, lightning-fast drive-thru service, and reasonable prices make it a top choice. Whether you're craving tacos, burritos, or any of their tasty offerings, you won't be disappointed. This place is a true winner for those who want quality and convenience without breaking the bank
The food is delicious. One of my favorite taco shops. Carne asada burrito delicious and their roll tacos too!
Food is always on point 🔥 super fast service 🙌 👌 freshly made 10/10 good prices as well
Every Tuesday I need to order burritos for my team. I call them at 430 in the morning they answer everytime. The order is always ready to go for me by the time I get at 515. Team is feed and happy. Great service great food
It's an old wiener schnitzel building that you drive right through the middle of. The food is what you come here for. That's it. The service is the best around they will get it right every time. You can come late at night. I would not use it as a destination for a date , marriage proposal, graduation ceremony or anything that requires getting out of the car. You come here because the food is almost a religious experience. It's that good. If you don't enjoy it then you didn't order it right. I'm going back over there now.
I have been coming here for years recently I ordered a burrito it was a wrong order I came back a few days later I showed him my receipt and they gave me the order right that's great customer service and the food has great flavor I highly recommend this place five stars out of five stars!
Prime example why San Diego has the best burritos. The food here is amazing. The portions are huge. The burritos are sometimes big enough for two people. Had the surf and turf and even at 1 am it was super fresh and the staff was extremely helpful.
Excellent mexican food. It Mom and Pop place.
Carne asada fries are delicious 😋 After a late night at church was a blessing to be a able to eat this enjoyed it last night with my hubby
The food here is great! And it has stayed that way! Staff has always been friendly as well. Personally, what I love is that it’s right off the freeway and it’s drive thru! It is a super busy intersection and parking is a little awkward and limited. Also I don’t believe seeing any seating so definitely no large groups.
My girl took care of me again, I haven't been there in a long time and she still remembered me
This is the only place that the food doesn't change with the cook. The food is so good it tastes like they just picked the cilantro.
This is a 24 hour taco shop. It was like 5am when i went in the drive thru and ordered rolled tacos with everything and a carne asada burrito that was so big and heavy that I could only eat half. The food was great and so was the cashier with her friendly smile.
Amazing food and service, thank you for the great late nights /._./
Food is always delicious. The server confirms your order several times to make sure that your food and order is the way that you want it. The area is the perfect atmosphere for eating. Amazing!!
Can beat the giant amazing breakfast burritos. The bacon is chunky and crispy. Live the rolled tacos with guacamole. Red salsa is spicy and deliciously fiery. Prices are reasonable for the amount of food you get . I like to call ahead and order, less wait time.
4.7⭐️ This place was my GO TO spot on the way home. The food is so good, and they do have a few tables, but it mostly just a normal San Diego taco shop, and you get it to go🤷🏾♀️ the food is very good Update! Back home after 6.5 years, this is still the spot! Food, amazing. Open 24hrs. Cannot ask for more.
Speaking as an El Compadre Virgin: I just pulled off the highway for a quick stop at the gas station across the street. I noticed this place and thought I'd try it out. Not knowing what to expect, at first glance at the menu, I thought it seemed a bit expensive, so I only ordered a Beef Taco and Beef Burrito. That came out to just over $11. I was expecting something just above maybe Taco Bell or Del Taco. Boy, was I wrong! The first clue was when he handed me the bag out of the Drive-Thru window. It was so heavy that I almost dropped it. But I only ordered a Burrito and a Taco, right? So I pulled into the parking lot to see what I really had. The second clue was the heavenly aroma that immediately overwhelmed the car. Then I opened the bag...Both items were Huge! And they were stuffed to the brim with the juiciest, most flavorful, shredded beef and all the extras. I was very, very (uh, did I say very) very surprised. It was soooooo good that I finished it all, right there in the parking lot. That's when I realized that it wasn't expensive at all. I got exactly, if not more than what I paid for! And had I ordered more (as I initially intended before checking the menu), I don't think I would have been able to finish it. Those two items were enough. And spoiler alert: If you're dressed nicely, you're gonna need to change your shirt after you're done. So if you're like me and just passing through town and decide to give El Compadre a try...I can confidently say, you will be so happy that you did!
Nothing fancy, but the entire menu is done well, and at a reasonable price. This place has been around since 1986, and is walk up and drive through only. There are a couple of tables outside, but as you are next to the sidewalk on a very busy street, it's best to enjoy the food at one of the nearby parks. My favorite is the Super Carne Asada Fries. Yes, yes, I know, not the healthiest thing around, but I do love it.
I think I have been eating here for 30 years, maybe longer and thats straight up crazy to think about. The food has tasted the same forever!. I would say it’s kind of a unique and I love it.
Very nice service. The food was bad however, please change your oil and everything is far to greasy even when no grease should be involved. The corn tortillas were old and extremely thick. Not authentic Mexican food in any way. Nothing seems fresh except the eggs. They definitely aim to please however and so I would go back and try something else. Second chance. Will update upon my second try.
Haven't been back in years and it's still pretty good! Prices are waaay higher now... so I need like 2-3 more shrimp in that burrito and actual FRIES in my California Burrito! 😂🤣 When did the breakfast burrito potatoes get involved in Cali Burritos? 🤔 Nevertheless, it was nostalgic going back.
The food here is fresh and delicious. I can vouch for the fish and carne asada burritos as well as the rolled tacos. They have the best hot sauce...it has a little kick. Overall the food is great...just a little pricey, but well worth it. Four and a half stars!
Tuesdays. You have to go Tuesdays. Whichever cook they have working taco-Tuesdays is 👌 always a hit. But honestly only go that day
El Compadre Taco Shop is a solid spot, especially since it’s open 24 hours — clutch for those late-night cravings! The burritos are fire — packed with flavor and always hit the spot. The carne asada tacos are a bit on the smaller side, but they’re still tasty and satisfying. Prices are a little on the higher end, but honestly, the quality of the food makes it worth it. Definitely one of my go-to taco shops when everything else is closed or when I’m craving something legit. The place is on second street and oakdale.
Good carne asada burrito with pico de gallo on the side. Gracias por el lunch. I ate the burrito b4 the picture💚😎❤️. Came back today for a $14 California burrito. Burrito was pretty small. The potatoes are boiled in squares not French fries fyi. They forgot to cook my tortilla & the guacamole. Last two pictures is the left over tortilla 😓.
The burritos are well worth the price you pay. Big enough to split and still be full and taste very good. I drive 30 miles to eat here, it's that good!
The food is good, better than a lot of places around town. Service is usually pretty fast and friendly. Deducted one star because they manage to get something wrong on the orders almost every single time we go there. Rolled tacos with sour cream AND guacamole....you get extra(like a ton) sour cream and no guac at all. Bean, cheese, and rice burrito? You get beans, an absolutely incredible amount of cheese...and no rice at all. Order a coke, get a diet coke....etc, etc. 😑
Food is good. Really enjoy the food. My only issue with this place is the tortillas. You know when you have tortillas at home. You leave them in the fridge not sealed properly and part of the tortilla gets hard and stale which taste bad in my opinion. That's how I get a burrito when I order one. Around the edges and other parts just taste stale and bad. I'm literally at another taco shop right now as I wrote this. Their tortillas are very good. Entire thing is warm and soft. I don't work for a taco shop and trying to bring another business down I'm just a guy who enjoys Mexican food. They can do alot better cooking the tortillas keeping them fresh
Food was average, service through drive through was average, nothing extra. Didn't seem very curteous or friendly. Might as well have been a robot. Atmosphere...really ?!! Feels like you could get mugged if it wasn't cause of the drive theough.
Got nachos and it cost about $18.50. that's not even what it costs downtown. Chicken very salty. The bottom layer of the nachos are all the crumbles from the bottom of the bag. I won't be going back. And I tried them one other time before maybe a month ago, I ordered a chicken California burrito with chipotle sauce. When I got home it started eating, I noticed that it was no Chipotle sauce. I called in and told the young lady who was working, all she said was "Oh." Then Dead silence 🤣 no offer to fix it or add it for free next time or anything, but I definitely paid for it. It's obvious that a lot of Mexican food places and San Diego know that they don't have to depends on customer service to get customers. O well 🤷🏿♂️ Okay so update : it's been a while, so I figured maybe I'll give them another shot. I tried to call in, but after waiting at the red light on 2nd Street for about 2 minutes, I figured, fine I'm close enough, no big deal. Even though I could clearly see from where I was, no one was in the drive-thru, no one was at the Flint counter up front. I asked what was in the surf and turf burrito and they said that two of the ingredients were tomatoes and Bell peppers. Not Pico de gallo, specifically tomatoes and bell peppers. So I wasn't interested in it. I decided to go for a California burrito because that's a San Diego staple, and it has the same recipe, you just have to get it right. I'll attach pictures of the slot that was inside of the tortilla. They put bell peppers and actual cubed potatoes in it. That's not what goes in California burritos. Everybody knows California burritos come with french fries. They always have! Related to not ask me if I wanted any hot sauce and took her a while to come to the window because she was talking to the other young lady working there. Overall, this place really doesn't care about its customer service or quality, won't be coming back
me and my girlfriend ordered cardne asada fries super expensive 22$ when it arrived it was cold, and the size is so small definitely not worth the price at all. It’s good food don’t get me wrong but you can pay that price at any other taco shop and get a regular serving for the family. My hands are really small by the way.
So I got roll tacos my first time here, they were extremely burnt in oil and really hard to chew on. I decided to get a California Burrito this time, it was very delicious BUT for the price maybe I would think about getting it again only because the burrito was on the smaller side. Also instead of fries they put actual potatoes as well as Pico de Gallo. My husband got a chile relleno burrito with carne asada which was gross. It had American cheese inside the chile, they add enchilada sauce which was greasy and they don't add avocado..
Usually these guys kill it on the burritos, but this last one was so ridiculously small. I felt scammed. I didn’t go back cause I don’t like confrontation. I could wrap the tortilla around the little bit of meat a couple of times. 😞 I’ll include pictures of my “Carne Asada burrito” for about $10(?). That’s not worth $10 to me.
I actually really like this place so it's painful to give a poor review. The food they make here is good, fast, cheap, and easy. They don't make many mistakes and they seem to always be open. Reliable and consistent particularly during covid times being one of the few drive thru mex places around. My problem is that they are not willing to budge on a few things. The carne asada fries are ALWAYS underdone and get soggy after about 5 min. I've tried at least a dozen times to order the fries "extra crispy" and not once has it happened. They just straight up ignore when you ask. It's unfortunate because they're otherwise really good carne fries. I will certainly order them again and they will certainly be undercooked. Apparently it is the way of things and I've just come to accept it. I considered not even posting my perspective on the matter but thought maybe if we all ask for them extra crispy then maybe they'll hear us. Stand with me in solidarity for crispiness!
Dropped my rating due to today's experience. Been going here for years. Simple order, breakfast burrito with bacon. Burrito used to be as big as my forearm and $5. Today almost $7 and the size of 2 taquitos wrapped together... pulled up, 4 cars ahead of me, past experiences dictate 10-15 minutes makes the time-line tight but should have been fine. Wrong. Usually the cook has several orders on the grill and when I get to the window it's pay and go with a few pleasantries exchanged with the girls. Today the guy BEHIND me runs up to the window says something gets back in his car. I get to window they run out serve him, he backs out etc, the cook just starts to make my order when I pulled up instead of having it almost done. Not the experience I have had from here and with the rising cost and shrinking size of their product I'm not sure I'll be going in for a repeat of today...
Not as good as it was promised. Tostadas was soggy & tasteless...salsa was just hot sauce...too hot, no flavor tho. Prices were way too high for lack of taste. Too many other Mex takeouts to use this one, service was also very slow. I won't be returning to this place for sure!
Service speed is average, but consistency is severely lacking. One day you get all the menu ingredients, and the next (more often than not) not so much. I think you could say they are consistently inconsistent at least till you get home. They are open 24/7. So for the late night munchies, their food is good enough especially when you are feelin’ groovy! You’ll never miss the inconsistently missing ingredients.
First and last time here. Over priced and food was very small portioned. Service was ok, it wasn’t too busy for a Saturday night. Food was bland.
Can’t believe a chile relleno burrito was just about $14 for some cheese chile and some lettuce wrapped in a tortilla. Literally was nothing special but stupid expensive!!! First time coming here and the last with those prices.
Havent been to El Compadre in years. They used to be so good. Tonight I decided I will try a California burrito. Cant go wrong with a Cali burrito right? Except this time, they did mess it up. The burrito was comprised of mostly potatoes. There was barely any meat so the ratio of meat to potatoes was way off. For $20, not worth it. Go somewhere else. Hoping it was an off day, but Idk if I will go back for now.
I've been wanting to try this place for a long time. Today I went and expected it to be great but the cashier gave me the wrong order. I ordered a supreme carne asada burrito and the cashier heard me correctly. When I got to the window, my ticket said what I ordeded but instead I received carne asada fries. I believe the cashier should check the food before giving it out and double check the receipt not blindly giving it out for speed.
The food here is unbearable. The cali burrito I got here was miserable to say the least, the miniscule amount of meat was definitely the first thing I notice with the first bite. The other thing is how much they charge by not having any type of guac or sour cream so its just add on to the price. The fact that they use mushy potatoes instead of fries was soo grotesque, it felt like i was eating a mashed potato burrito. It takes a while to get your food which i have no problem as long as the food is dednt but it was far from it. I def dont recommend this place to no one unless your tryning play a good prank. The carne asada fries are not that good either alot of the bad reviews are on point.
Tried calling in to make a request to take off certain items off my food that they normally do for me, lady basically told me to screw off and that she cant do that when i spent almost 40$ for it. in there 4 times a week to pay for their overpriced food because i work late hours and their close. never again
I ordered a carne asada burrito sour cream and cheese only, no guacamole. This burrito was horrible no taste no cheese and it had guacamole in it.
I am in leaving this review in hope management sees it and increases the quality. I use to love compadre but my last two burritos have been cold and my chicken came with bones. Considering that its a little more expensive than other taco shops in the area, this kind of quality cannot persist. If the they return to making decently portioned and hot burritos ill change my review.
Took my parents out to eat since they were in the mood for a burrito. This place has never disappointed my husband and I but today it was a total fail. We ordered 4 carne asada burritos and a chicken quesadilla . All of the tortillas were not cooked and cold. The carne asada burritos were mostly avocado with pico de gallo. My sons chicken quesadilla was watery and the rice and beans cold. The only good thing we all enjoyed were the aguas of horchata and jamaica.
I am so absolutely disappointed with this place. Their food use to be Fire! Now it's just a joke. The older lady that use to work here was so nice. Now the joker at the window is so rude and she doesn't listen to what you order . Everything I ordered was wrong and the Carne asada burrito was so lite on the meat. Maybe we got half an ounce and for the price absolutely ridiculous . Horrible service Horrible food I definitely will never go back. You lose customers when your scrimp on the portions.. If I could it would have been -5☆'s
The food was absolutely disgusting!! Ordered 5 dolled tacos and a Cali burrito. I've never had a salty rolled taco until today, and the guacamole was browning. The burrito was dry, and it barely had pico on it. This place trash, and that is where the food is.. in the TRASH!
The cashier Marisela was very rude. After asking what comes on the super fries she tells us they have beans then get our order and no beans. Then when we go back she says I never said that they don’t come with beans in a very rude way instead of accommodating or adding them on so we could pay she argued that she didn’t say it. Terrible customer service.$15 for super fries and it’s fries cheese and meat?
So I have been here a few times but they mess up the orders a lot. I always order the same thing and it has been messed up 3 times the first time I ordered I asked no pico on my Cali burrito but it had more pico than meat the second time my Cali had potatoes instead of fries you have to ask for fries instead of potatoes where in San Diego do you have to do that? The third time it had no cheese on my cali plus it was dry even though I added sour cream and all three times they offer apologies but not to change out the burrito.. Avoid this place unless you want to be disappointed..
Super Carne asada barely had carne asada inside. It’s more like guac, sour cream and beans broth wrapped in tortilla with very few pieces of meat (literally about 10 small pieces). Not worth $12.50+tax. I wouldn’t pay a penny for it to be honest…
Filthy and disgusting! Customer service could use a lot of work. Was here on Monday 3/25/24 during the afternoon hours. The woman attending customers at the drive-through seemed to be under the influence of drugs. I do not recommend going to this location, there’s better places else.
This place used to be really good. But whoever owns it now just rips people off. I just got charged for an “egg surcharge” not even lying. Adding pictures to prove it. It’s been over a month since eggs gone down in price, yet they still want to surcharge you for them so your breakfast burritos are $12. There are three taco shops in a 1 mile radius from this place. All 3 have better breakfast burritos, they are under $9, and you won’t feel ripped off. Done with this place after eating here for 20 years. Used to go to Helix, and grabbed a burrito at least 4 times a week. This place won’t last much longer
I was racially profiled and then discriminated against because of my disability. I have autism and ask ingredients to my favorite items to make sure that they haven't changed the guacamole recipe and haven't started adding onions and tomatoes. I ask, does this item have onions? Or tomatoes, I do it regularly and this day I was told chinga to madre. And blah blah que blah blub que laughter laughter laughter. Then I called and they said the footage shows it was a personal conversation and I might take this to a lawyer or autistic therapist that make recommendations
This place makes the worse california burrito ever. I do not recommend ordering that but that's also the reason why I would never go back. The meat looked like it was boiled with potatoes and tomatoes it didn't have guacamole or actual fries, the cook definitely needs to be fired before they loose more business.
Probably the worst taco shop in San Diego. Food quality is never consistent, hot sauces as well. Sometimes the green sauce is mild and other times it's extremely hot. Burritos sizes have significantly shrunk as well over the years while prices remain high.
The food Sucked! We spent $50 on food that was horrible! It wasn’t hot! We live maybe 5mins away and when we got home the burritos and the combination plate were cold! I only gave one star because they refunded us our money back! The soda tasted awful! Their machine needs to be cleaned! Sorry but I will Never eat there again! Praying I dnt get food poisoning!
Not sure what happened but this went from being my go to Mexican place for decades to absolute trash. It's been getting worse and worse over time poorly seasoned meat, bad smelling cheese then today i ordered two carne asada burritos with no Pico and i got two onion burritos with a bit of meat in it and a diet coke for almost 30 bucks. I'm sad they suck now but happy i live were i do; we have a hundred Mexican places in a few miles of them that are just as good. I tried to call them to give them the opportunity to fix their mistake but the only number they have is a fax. Kinda 1900s.
Ordered on DoorDash. Arrival time kept postponing by 10 minutes every 5 minutes. Was originally 2:20am, is now 3am. Pissed off, need refund. Idk if it is an issue with DoorDash or El Compadre themselves but something is wrong. We ordered ahead on purpose and have now been waiting for around an hour.
They don't put guacamole or sour cream in their california burritos anymore. Rip off never coming back been going to this taco shop for 4 years. Guess they finally gave in and became cheap. Burrito is bland and dry, and still $14 no guacamole or sour cream is crazy. Silvas taco shop is right down the street anyway.
I believe I have this place before - years ago I would have remembered if it was bad, but I ordered it today I got a carne asada burrito. For $15, it was pretty small. It was disgusting and I love food. I didn't finish it. The meat was like bland or like spoiled it had a spoiled smell the pico was just like onions, I won't be going there again. I'm sorry, I don't think they need to be in business.
$18 for carne asada fries, $16 for frozen sysco rolled tacos that were hard as a rock and had no meat in them and $5 fountain drink should be illegal. For $50 i threw my food away and now have a stomach ache...NEVER AGAIN
Payed for sour cream in my Cali burrito and did not get it. French fries are boiled square potatoes. Food needed flavor,or salt. Total paid $16.08 Cali burrito with bean's and sour cream. I do not recommend it for the price
Tell me if this is a beans and cheese burrito ? It's not because it is only cheese. I pay a lot for 2 of this , but I definitely do NOT recommend buying food from here.. I should check the reviews next time the reviews, before I buy from places like this.. don't buy food from here....
VALERIOS TACO SHOP… is just right down the street and their food blows Compadre out of the water. My kid took one bite of the bean and cheese burrito and walked away. Horrible quality lately. $16 for a bean and cheese and a mixed burrito. 👎 My last few visits have been slightly under par, not sure what’s different...stopped in and got a bean and cheese and a mixed burrito. Unfortunately the beans have absolutely no flavor and there’s literally one bite of meat in my mixed burrito. The girl working here says they don’t do points anymore for loyalty rewards. I won’t be back.
