Bringing a date to Saul’s for a first visit I had complete confidence in the dining experience, and I was more than satisfied. If anything they have dialed the service up. Fun and tasty, attentive but not intrusive. A bowl of their soup can be a meal but we got a cup each, plenty of room for the rich, tasty sandwiches after. Our pairings: matzo and a reuben on rye, lentil and roast beef royale (not pictured.) All good but reuben is the best. I have it with the top notch potato salad, and got the house made celery soda, amazing as in years past. We came late and they were out of a few desserts so instead of cheesecake we tried the chocolate layer cake. On a whim I added a pot of hot mint tea and it was the perfect finish to a perfect dinner. I would say “will return,” but we already did, for brunch the next day. (Try the Malawach, a flaky Yemeni flatbread!)

A flawless Berkeley staple. The food is consistently excellent, as is the service. The restaurant has so much character and a unique menu. It’s a vibrant park of the neighborhood and an anchor for north shattuck. The turkey sandwich, while relatively simple in its composition, is probably one of the best sandwiches I’ve ever had.

This place is amazing. High quality comfort food, great service, and never a long wait even at the busiest time. classic New York Deli meets authentic Middle Eastern food with a creative and yummy twist. Best Hummus in the Bay!

I just popped in for a cookie. I absolutely love their Jewish cookies. Especially the One shaped like triangles, but I forget the name of them. I’ve never seen so many different flavors however I came for an apricot but wound up also getting the poppy one because a customer in front of me said that those were her favorite. I’ve been coming to this restaurant since I was a teenager which was decades ago. They have amazing breakfast and the best pastrami.

Lovely restaurant and amazing food. I had the half pastrami and matzo ball soup as well as some of the latkes! While I'm quite far away at ocean beach I look forward to next visit!

I have been to Saul’s more than 30 times over the years:) The matzo ball soup has never failed: perfect dill, tender chicken, and an irresistible aroma. Their brunch menu also offers a great variety of tasty dishes. Truly a gem in Berkeley.

I have been several times at this restaurant through the years. My former boss loves it :) she is 88 years old and is very happy every time we have been there in particular for brunch. I like the breakfast of eggs with salmon, or the bagels with trout (plates are between 15 and 18 usd) Coffee is a bit expensive (cappuccino almost 5 USD) but hey, this is California so if you are a tourist it will always look expensive. Pastry is also good :) Service rocks ✍🏻😎

Among the more spectacular Jewish deli experiences one can have, Saul's seems to do everything perfectly. As a vegetarian, there are three key items that I believe qualify a deli as stellar: the coffee, here a step above, the cole slaw, exactly as it should be -- proper deli cole slaw -- and the bagels, where many a deli fails, but Saul's shines. In particular for a deli, being in Berkeley, Saul's has a plethora of vegetarian dishes. The Mushroom Reuben was the best Reuben I have ever had. My wife ordered the matzo brei, which was cooked with onions (a little unusual) and came with cinnamon apple sauce. This was absolutely the best matzo brei I've ever had. I dug seeing Buster Keeton in the bathroom and the Emma Goldman poster outside. I asked the waiter what brand of mustard they used. My whole family was nutso for this place!!

Great breakfast options: sandwiches, bagels, pancakes and many egg options. Pretty much all good. Suggesting fish options too. Shaksuka is one of the best I had.

Large open space, clean, tidy and well-attended. Thursdays there may be a Farmer's Market out fron at noon, or one (weather permitting). We happen to be here on one of those less amenable weather days. One visit only, so no in-depth review here. Great bagels. Great Smoked Salmon. Well worth visiting and getting to know this place. Staff are friendly, helpful, and try to keep my.modifications from costing the moon and stars. The pastry cases are hard to pass up. Rugelach and Hamentashen come in 4 flavors, maracoons 2. I am not eating everything to report, but the one chocolate Rugelach was dreamy.

The pastrami sandwich is a must, absolutely delicious and mouthwatering! It was such a great experience, and we’ll definitely be back next time we visit Berkeley. The service was also excellent and super fast. Highly recommend!

Can’t believe this is my first time here! I wanna say this is the best affordable pan-Mediterranean food I’ve had in the bay. Huge menu for vegetarian options. It was the week Diane Keaton passed away and they put her pictures on the bathroom door which was super sweet.

I love Saul's and have been going regularly for over 30 years. There is nothing like a neighborhood diner and Saul's has the best diner vibes whether you're there for the breakfast bustle, outdoor sunny California lunch, or a cozy dinner. Go for the pastrami ruben but also go for the vegetarian dishes. I think I've eaten everything on the menu. It's all good, especially the pickle plate.

Don’t ask why but my nickname in high school was Gretchen so it felt appropriate to order the sandwich resembling that nickname. It may have healed me from my adolescent bullying because this sandwich was insanely good! One that I will be thinking about for a while now and plotting to come back to order again. Is there anything better than pastrami or corned beef? Not really. The chicken cutlet sandwich was apparently good because my husband ate it before I could try it. Not mad, just have to come back to try it. Matzo ball soup, ya gotta have it and it was good here. Looking forward to coming back here to try more. I loved the outdoor seating but next time I want to go inside, it looks really nice in there. Also, the potato salad had CHUNKS of pickle in it. Heaven on earth.

Saul’s has the best Jewish food I’ve had since moving to California! The Pastrami Reuben was absolutely delicious, with a generous portion of meat and perfectly toasted bread, it did not disappoint. The Brisket Bubbe was also delicious, I like the Reuben more, but my friend preferred the brisket. Between the two sides, I like the potato salad more than the coleslaw. I also ordered the Green New Dill, a dill infused cocktail that was very refreshing. My friend ordered something I’ve never had, a celery cream soda, and that was delicious too! The service was good at the restaurant. Our waiter was attentive and answered questions about my tree nut allergy. As for the ambiance, the vibes in there were pretty good! We got sat outside and thanks to the heaters we weren’t too cold, but we did have to stay bundled up for the whole meal. The inside feels like an old Jewish deli and is quite charming. I’ll be going back to Saul’s for sure!

Hidden Gem in Berkeley. We ordered 2 sandwiches and both were incredibly delicious. Their pastrami is excellent and have great brewed iced tea. More importantly, their staff was very friendly and helpful in choosing from their menu. Our only regret was not being able to go back and try their dinner menu. Highly recommended.

Wait staff was excellent. Food was good as always. Place was crowded and there was a maybe (perhaps due to the good food and service). Their bagels are 👌 (I would rank them better than Boichik's. Sorry Boichik I'm still a fan). So of course has to grab some bagels to go for later. Food is good. I wish they had vegan cream cheese. My go to here is a bagel with avocado. My kids always enjoy their food too and bonus point for having a kids menu.

We visited Saul’s for the first time. It’s a busy eclectic diner that blasts you with nostalgia. Menu has a wide variety which I appreciate. There’s breakfast, lunch and dinner items. We ordered the snitzel sandwich and the matzah ball soup. Snitzel was cooked perfectly, texture from the crispy bread and coleslaw complimented it well, soup was also delicious. Service was attentive. Bathrooms are a wee bit small. Overall, great place to visit!

Lovely outdoor seating and a menu full of interesting choices. I absolutely loved the "Malawach" – such a unique and flavorful dish! I also had a cream cheese bagel with chive spread and veggies, which was filling and tasty. My husband wasn’t too impressed with his "chicken schnitzel" sandwich, though. All in all, a pretty solid spot that I’d be happy to return to.

A friend was in town and really wanted to go to Sauls. She was craving the falafel and I had never been so we decided to give it a try. The staff was very welcoming and friendly. My friend did get the falafel plate and I got the half Sando and soup combo. Because I hadn't had matzo ball soup in a long time I decided to go the upcharge and get the matzo with my half Ruben Sando. The pastrami sandwich with acme rye bread was delicious and the soup was good, but do expect to pay a pricy penny for a small portion. The food is tasty but the portions are a bit small. $24.78 (before tip) for half a Sando, a small cup of soup and an espresso. My friends falafel plate looked delicious and fresh. It's like a diner style inside with booths all around. I'm glad I got to try the place out!

A few vegan options More vegetation options are available. Pita Yuba and fries. Instead of the normal falafel option this was a nice change of pace. Could have done without french fries in the sandwich. A decent sandwich and fries helped fill up the belly. Surprised to find at least a few vegan options for sandwiches and appetizers. Ate outside but the yellow jackets weren't much fun for many tables. Able to finish without getting bitten. Plenty of seating spaces inside and outside and busy for Friday lunch hours.

The food’s pretty grub. And the service is very good. Courteous and fast. The pastrami is awesome though a few pieces can be a little dry. But the half sando, half soup is a nice meal. Add a couple bucks if you want the famous matzo ball soup. Comes with slaw inside so remember to tell them to put it on the side if you’re not into wet pastrami sandwiches. The patty melt is tasty but dang, super oily. The whole thing turns out wet cuz of the grease. Caramelized onions tip the scales for this one. Comes with side of slaw or potato salad. I haven’t drank here but they have a full bar. Also some nice pastries. Gets very busy in the weekends but weekdays are cool. Be prepared to spend more than you think. But it’s a good meal and in a good atmosphere. Nice area of town to walk around before or after you feast. Parking is generally available. Meters in front but I usually look on the side streets there they have two hour free parking.

Usually, 5 stars overall; Today, negative stars for rude, incompetent hostess Saul's has been our go-to place for decades; the food has always been consistent and of high quality. And usually, the service is excellent. But not today. Long rant short: Tersely dismissive, incompetent hostess creates confusion & bad impression for the entire restaurant. Long rant: Too often, the Holiday Rush can bring about fraught nerves and chaos. However, this doesn't excuse the rudeness of the hostess we encountered (late afternoon of Sat, Dec. 20). We were seated in what was available, a table for 2 in the middle of a loud, bustling restaurant. My husband had asked for the empty booth across the way but was told that it was reserved for 4 people. Perfectly understandable, given the crowds. But in less than three minutes, the hostess seated 2 people at that very same booth, supposedly reserved for 4. Confused, we then noticed another empty booth that had suddenly opened up. But, she told us tersely, again, that it was for 4 people. Once again, shortly afterward, the hostess seated only 2 people there. We rolled our eyes and were just going to make do, when a small booth for 2 opened up right next to us, and we then proceeded to ask for THAT. A waiter standing nearby gave us the go ahead to move. However, apparently, the guy who vacated the spot had merely gone to the bathroom, so when he returned to his seat and found us sitting there, it became very awkward for all of us. At that point, since our order hadn't yet been taken, and we were no longer in the mood for putting up with the rude, inncompetent service, we decided to leave (though we had already waited 30 minutes to be seated). Almost laughable, on our way out, there was another couple who was being escorted, to that very same table, by that ridiculous hostess. So she didn't even remember having already seated someone else there! (What else happened that day?) When the manager confronted her about the mixup/s, the hostess's previously rude & dismissive attitude visibly turned all sweetness, adding insult to injury. NOT cool. Please excuse the rant, but Saul's, please train this hostess to have some organizational skills. But more than anything, instill in her the importance of having--at the very least--some courtesy when dealing with customers (who, needless to say, keep your business thriving). After all, the host/ess hired for the front is supposed to be the restaurant's welcoming representative, NOT someone who causes confusion & discomfort. The best of restaurants should feel like a second home, inviting you in, not putting you off and making you want to leave--which we finally did, for the first time ever at Saul's. Lastly, heads up: Saul's weekend brunch ends at 2:30, not at 3:00, as we were mistakenly told. P.S. Thanks to all the other staff at Saul's (including the excemplary manager) who, clearly, continue to work hard to do their job right.
