All the other reviews are spot on, get the lobster dynamite it's phenomenal. The hamachi appetizer was great too. We ordered the omakase nigiri a bit pricey but crafted beautifully with excellent quality fish. The rainbow rolls were also great really can't go wrong with anything you order here.
We’ve been to Stevenson’s Library at the Grand Hyatt in Kauai many times, probably our 20th visit, and it never disappoints. This time we started with the takosu sunomono which was okay, nothing special, and the edamame with Hawaiian chili which was awesome, perfect level of salt and just the right kick without needing any soy sauce. The miso soup was incredible, real miso broth with just the right amount of tofu, seaweed, and kombu. The star of the night was the Stevenson’s Lobster Dynamite. The presentation caught us off guard, it was beautiful and packed with food, definitely worth the price. The mix of scallops, crab, dynamite sauce, and eel sauce had that perfect balance of savory, sweet, and salty, so good we immediately ordered a second one. The black cod was tasty but not something I would rush to get again compared to the dynamite. For rolls we had tekka, kappa, spicy tuna, kai, kazan, and kawa. All were fresh and generously filled, but the kazan (volcano roll) was the clear favorite and we ended up ordering three of those. Great kick from the jalapeno and spicy tuna, balanced perfectly by the dynamite sauce. We finished with otoro and uni sashimi. The otoro was buttery and melted in my mouth, and the uni had that perfect ocean flavor and richness. Drinks were a mix. The Sunburst and Strawberry Twist mocktails tasted like watered down soda with a splash of syrup and I would not recommend them, but the Hawaiian Banana Split mocktail was decadent, thick, and exactly what you would hope for. Service overall was good. The hostess and bar staff were warm and friendly, though our main server seemed a bit rushed or maybe just busy with a big party. Still, everything came out timely and the vibe stayed welcoming. Every trip to Kauai we make sure to eat here and this visit reminded me why. Great sushi, huge rolls, and that Lobster Dynamite alone makes it a must every time.
This is the first time I’ve ever felt the need to leave a review for a restaurant. It was that good! My wife and I live on Kauai and will now be making this our go to for special occasions. Everything we had was amazing! The lobster dynamite blew our minds right off the bat. We followed it up with some sashimi, chefs choice nigiri, and a cut roll. My wife doesn’t typically like sashimi, but she loved it here! Top quality fish and preparation. Beautiful atmosphere and great service as well. We will be back many times!
Super cool layout. Really feels like you're dining in a library. Loved the Lobster Dynamite! Just wow - unique/fun presentation and delicious! Stevenson's Library didn't skimp on the portion of lobster either. Plenty of juicy meat to enjoy within the shell! The Hawaiian Banana Split Mocktail was a lot of fun too. Blows my mind that I was drinking a banana split. Like each slurp had that taste of banana, strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla. I've reviewed the list of ingredients but I'm still amazed they pulled this off. Highly you give it a go if you love the classic dessert! My husband and I also had Miso Soup, Sushi Pizza, Misoyaki Black Cod, Shrimp Tempura, Matcha Tiramisushi, and the Mango Panna Cotta. But the BIG stand outs were the Lobster Dynamite and Hawaiian Banana Split Mocktail. We even stopped by our last night at Grand Hyatt Kauai to have another go at the Banana Split. Amazing the second time as well!
The Lobster special and the Black Cod are not to be missed!!!! Incredible!!!!! We are on Kauai for five nights and have changed reservations so we can go back for a second dinner (this Thursday Nov 13th!)
The staff really allows you to enjoy dining, nothing is hurried. Everything we ordered was fresh and delicious. Drinks were great as well. Stevenson's Lobster Dynamite truly is just that.
Located inside the Grand Hyatt Poipu. Handcrafted cocktails, delicious dining options and friendly, attentive service. All at a very good price point.
A Perfect Sushi Date Night at Stevenson’s Library – A Hidden Gem at Our Hotel! If you’re looking for an upscale yet cozy sushi experience in Kauai, Stevenson’s Library is a must-visit! We had an incredible date night here, indulging in some of the freshest and most beautifully crafted sushi we’ve ever had. From the moment we sat down at the elegant bar, we knew we were in for a treat. The sashimi was melt-in-your-mouth fresh, beautifully plated with delicate edible flowers and citrus accents. The signature sushi rolls were an absolute highlight—each bite was packed with bold flavors, fresh fish, and creative toppings like jalapeños, tobiko, and spicy aioli. The ambiance was perfect for a romantic night out, with dim lighting, a refined bar selection, and an intimate setting that made us feel like we had stumbled upon a hidden gem. Pairing our meal with a warm carafe of sake only elevated the experience. Service was fantastic, and the staff was attentive and knowledgeable, helping us select the perfect rolls for our tastes. If you’re staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai, make sure to book a table in advance—this spot is well worth it. ⭐ Must-Try Items: Sashimi platter – unbelievably fresh! Specialty sushi rolls – every single one was a hit. Sake selection – warm or chilled, both pair perfectly with sushi. Overall, Stevenson’s Library delivered a memorable and delicious date night that we won’t forget. Highly recommend for sushi lovers looking for a top-tier dining experience in Kauai! 🔥 Rating: 5/5 – A perfect blend of elegance, quality, and flavor.
Sushi was excellent. The tempura also delicious. We got seated in 5 minutes and our waiter was very nice. I recommend going here.
Outstanding sushi with amazing views. Cocktails were great and the kids mocktail was like dessert. Everything was fresh and served perfectly. Service was fast and efficient and always seemed to know exactly when you were going to bed something. Enjoyed it so much we are headed back this evening.
This restaurant, nestled within the grand Hyatt resort, exudes a delightful ambiance and provides exceptional service. The culinary offerings are equally impressive, particularly the matcha tiramisu, which left me utterly astounded. I wholeheartedly recommend this establishment.
Good sushi place in the Poipu area. The fish was fresh, subtle in taste and quick service. The dessert was delicious.
Absolutely fantastic sushi! Solid cocktails too! Service just about matched the quality of the food and setting. This is the kinda place you come to for a classy night out. Great views of the ocean from a sophisticated-beachy-library setting.
Amazing staff! Amazing food! Great atmosphere! Will return for sure!
The best sushi I’ve had. I recommend the Stevensons Lobster Dynamite. Excellent service at the bar. Best to reserve a table ahead of time. Bartender was friendly and helpful as she was very knowledgeable of the menu. Definitely wort the visit. Conveniently located within the Grand Hyatt Resort. Mahalo🌺😉
Had a great evening eating here. We visited the restaurant during our stay at the resort. The ambience is lovely and drinks are upmost quality. We tried sushi, lobster and chocolate tiramisu roll. Everything was good!!!
Not a lot of late night options on the island, so I was happy to check this out. #1, order the lilikoi & mango martini... so good but sneaky. #2, order the Stevenson sushi roll, the smokiness was a nice unique touch. Try the Japanese cheesecake, it's much lighter and fluffier cousin to the dense NY style. The views and service are great. Make reservations ahead of time especially if you're more than 2.
What an amazing experience! Stevenson's Library is just one of the dining options at the Grand Hyatt on Kauai. Make sure to call ahead for a reservation! The Dynamite Lobster was incredible, sushi pizza was amazing, Hamaci carpaccio was fantastic. We ordered a variety of items and shared everything! I highly recommend making time for Stevenson's Library (which is an actual library).
An amazing dinner for our honeymoon ❤️ the staff treated us so well and the food and sake were amazing - highly recommend the Wakatake sake, kanpachi nigiri, and niji roll. And as an added bonus, the bookworms in your life will love pausing to look at all the different books they have. Definitely on the pricey side, but worth it for a fancy dinner.
Some of the best sushi we have ever had, anywhere. Everything was prepared to perfection. Tuna, salmon, local fish, all incredibly fresh. We also enjoy some of the fish cheek, as well as the lobster/crab dish. Special thanks to our sushi Chef, Angel, for some amazing service and unmatched plate preparation. Add in the views, and it's a perfect sushi experience. Book ahead of you can, but the bar is a great way to enjoy if you don't have a table!
During a few hours of serious sushi work, a buddy and I wound up ordering three crunchy rolls. They're delightful, to say the least. Throw in some lobster dynamite and good sake... Wonderful dinner with a view of beauty.
I have dined at this restaurant a few times over the years and each time the sushi is just as good as I remembered it. I recommend dining here even if you are not staying at the hotel. I enjoyed the hamachi crudo, big eye tuna nigiri, amberjack nigiri, yellowtail nigiri, volcano roll and the ocean roll. My family and I sat at a table on the patio. You simply cannot beat the view from outside. I have yet to visit a place with better fish than at Stevenson’s. I also recommend the lychee martini which isn’t on the menu but pairs, so well with the sushi! Oh and don’t forget about dessert, the matcha roll is amazing! I will come back again soon on my next trip to the island!
Awesome seafood and sushi restaurant. The Lobster and Crab Dynomite dish is one of the best seafood dishes I've ever had. Ŕeasonable prices considering the quality!
It's a library themed restaurant that's... Japanese fusion? Food was tasty and fairly priced. We ordered three drinks, a couple of appetizers, two rolls, dessert, and a keiki meal. The bill for two adults and a toddler was about $220 including tip. I wish the tiramisushi was smaller in diameter but came with more pieces. The wrong drinks came to our table twice.
We loved this place! We went here three times this week and loved the food, drinks, and staff. We recommend the specials (we got it twice, and it changes every night)
Get reservation. This was the best sushi I have had!!! We loved it. Service was a different story... Very slow. But overall I would recommend and eat here again. Drinks were good. We enjoyed it.
The Volcano roll and Crunchy roll were fantastic. High quality and delicious! Can’t wait to come back another time. The views of Shipwrecks beach were also stunning.
We made a reservation for our honeymoon dinner. We checked in and needed to wait a minute. Another couple checked in right after us and they also had to wait a minute. She called out our name at the other couple and seated them before us. She returned and called a name that wasn't ours and seated us on a noisy high top by the bar when we requested standard in our reservation. Other than that... Everything was very good. We liked the crunchy rolls the best. (California, Spicy tuna (wasn't Spicy), and crunchy)
Best sushi on island hands down! Lele Kavai is an excellent server! Super sweet with her warm Aloha personality. Great atmosphere awesome view of the ocean. Cozy setting with dim lighting. Literally a library with fresh seafood and sushi rolls. Me and my husband start off with the miso soup and sushi pizza. The Lobster Dynamite is an absolute must to try. Cooked to perfection. I recommend getting their specialty Rolls! The sushi is A real work of art and every bite just melts in your mouth and your taste buds just want more! I like pairing it with a sake. The Matsuno Maduri and the Hana Hou shu Sparkling are my absolute favorite! Also, don't forget to order the Tiramisushi for dessert! Rich, creamy, sweet Tiramisu Rolls. I really appreciate the level of service and quality of food here. Never disappoints!
Second time here. Great selection of fresh sushi, some of the best we have had. Extensive and creative cocktail choices, great ambiance and beautiful location.
Sushi was phenomenal. Everything was very yummy. The quality of the food was great unfortunately service was slow and lacking. Our waitress hardly checked on us. The buss boy was good and attentive. Could use some improvements staffing wise.
Two weeks enjoying best restaurants in Kauai and this was easily in the top 3. Love the library meets ocean vibe, staff pleasant and some of the best sushi we’ve ever had
We have had dinner there many times, it has ruined us for sushi elsewhere. have got to know the staff over the years and love Lisa, and Britney is the best, great personality and knows her job well. We always ask for her. She likes people and enjoys her job
We’ve been many times to this fine eatery and I thought it was about time ro leave a review: excellent food, service, ambiance, cocktails. This last time Tori was our server, next time we’ll go there, we’ll ask for her. Great experience!
The bartender- amazong Japanese/ Hawaiian man- was awesome. Completely knew his stuff. Great atmosphere. Prices were very similar to Koloa.
From the moment we arrived, everything about the experience was exceptional. The service was warm, attentive, and genuinely welcoming, making us feel relaxed and well taken care of without ever feeling rushed. The food was outstanding. Every dish was beautifully prepared, full of flavor, and clearly made with care. The fish was incredibly fresh—some of the best sushi we’ve ever had—and you could truly taste the quality in every bite. Each roll and plate felt thoughtfully crafted, balancing freshness, texture, and flavor perfectly. The atmosphere added to the experience as well, creating a calm, enjoyable setting that pairs perfectly with the cuisine. Stevenson’s is the kind of place where you savor every moment, from the first bite to the last. We loved everything about this restaurant and would highly recommend it to anyone visiting Kauai. It’s a must-visit for sushi lovers and anyone looking for an unforgettable dining experience.
I've eaten here several times and it never disappoints. Some of my favorite sushi rolls are the Kai, Kazan, and Kawa. One of the most popular and equally impressive dishes is the Stevenson's Lobster Dynamite. You can not go wrong w whatever you choose. Vegetarian options also available.
Amazing food, shocking bad service. We were fairly floored over our experience here because the drinks and the sushi was just incredible. We had the omakase and some other nigiri. The otoro was one of the best things we have ever tasted. Kawa Roll was also very good. But for a 100-200 a head type dinner; not clearing old drinks, never refilling water, it taking awhile to pay etc, is a bit unacceptable. I think maybe we just got unlucky on that front. Also the chairs to be were a bit strange. Fine for me but id steer clear if youre plus sized.
If you enjoy sushi, this is the place for you. Very good meals. Service is sub par. Our waitress forgot to bring a dish we ordered, cocktails long empty before she would come by for drink orders. We let them know we were celebrating our 25th anniversary several days ahead of time and we got pushed into a corner table, after requesting best table possible at time of booking. Guests that came after us were served before us. Enjoyed the sushi but would not come back. Service is king.
This is our 7th time in Hawaii and this place has the best ahi tuna ever! No fishy taste at all, only umami and perfectly jell-o like texture that melts your mouth. Miso salmon was also very tasty! The cocktails we ordered were all watered down, and the price was kind of high… $8 miso soup I was expecting something either very yummy or larger portion, but it was neither 😅 I’d still come back for the ahi. If you can’t get reservation, walk-ins are accepted at the bar seats.
Loved the college library style ambience . Good cocktail selection . Hardly any vegetarian option , the sesame spinach and veggie rolls saved the dinner . The rolls were fresh and delicious, excellent plating too. Family enjoyed their ShipWreck and hamachi . Tiramisu in sushi style was brilliance . And delicious too. Would have given 5 stars if the service wasn’t slow. The staff was helpful and friendly but the restaurant was more than crowded.
The service was great. The venue is good . It would be nice to have a few things that were not sushi based on the menu., Especially at a resort when yu have families eating out together. The sushi, well It was good, but not "off the hook" like you would expect sushi to be in Hawaii. The sushi rice was a little strong on the vinegar end which sets it apart from many places.
We loved eating at Stevenson’s Library! It is a very classy place to eat. The sushi is fresh which is always nice! The only reason I didn’t rate 5 stars is because of the price. However, it is at a resort so the prices are higher.
A very Americanized restaurant that serves Japanese food. I wouldn’t call it a Japanese restaurant. Food: Cod is the best dish 4.5/5, but should pair it with some rice since it’s a bit too heavy serve info just by itself. O’toro and uni nigiri is fresh but too pricey for those small quantities 4/5. Lobster dynamite is basically a crab cake and a bit too salty 3/5. Tempura has a very dense batter and a strong unpleasant taste from the baking soda 0/5. Macha tiramisu is NOT tiramisu, it’s a chocolate cheese cake that has no matcha taste which is fine, but pls don’t call it a macha tiramisu! As a chocolate cheese cake, 4/5; but as a macha tiramisu 0/5. Service: Server is friendly and welcoming. But why giving disposable chopsticks? Atmosphere: Very American style, like a steak house. No Japanese decoration at all.
Food was decent, they didn’t have any shishito peppers the night we were there, which was a bummer, but all the fish was good. The disposable chopsticks felt a bit out of place for the price point of the meal. The service was below-average for the price point and compared to other experiences nearby, some misses with refills and drinks and food taking a while. Atmosphere was top notch, perfect for a date night.
Reserved a special dinner for my wife. Her 50th birthday as well as our Honeymoon trip. Requested advice as to a nice seating location for this special day. Two days prior to the reservation. We arrived and they ask that we wait to be seated. They proceeded to seat multiple walk-in’s as well as couples with reservations later than ours. When the hostess finally came to seat us she placed us in what would be considered a not so desirable location for anyone. I pulled her aside and explained the situation. She said she was aware … so I asked if we could sit on the balcony. After a while she returned and obliged. After paying the bill I spoke with the gentleman running the front desk. I asked what I could have done differently to communicate that this was a special event and I would like assistance to make it so. The two gentlemen both told me no they just missed it. If that was the case then how did the hosts they spoke with before, that sat us know about it. In summary. The food was good. If this is a special day for your special someone, I would recommend going someplace else. That really didn’t care.
GOOD: Lobster dynamite was the standout dish and is what my wife and I will remember due to its quality and originality. The view was nice too. BAD: The rest of the menu lacks inspiration. Also, they had no special as they never received a fresh delivery of fish (so we were told). They have a gnat problem too which drove the couple next to us to leave. We ordered another drink and roll which we cancelled after 30 minutes of waiting. Paid the bill...party of 2 for $200. Do better Hyatt; there isn't much competition on the island anyways...
Thank you for doing your best to runin a wedding anniversary. You did your best but our sense of humor shined. Worst experience and I so wanted to love this place as it’s beautiful and you can tell they made it a special place. Sushie was super fresh and the service was an amazing. Except it comes with plastic strips hidden in the good. Food would have been awesome but I found plastic in their lobster (signature dish). See pic below with my plate. So is your food prepared? Long strips of plastic not short but long strips.. The table was soooo sticky you had to pry the plates, glasses off the table. You didn’t want to lay chop stick, forks or annytiing on the table that went into your mouth.Even the staff had to make an extra effort when picking up the plates. It was kind of funny to watch so we made a game of it. Felt bad for the staff as they would go to pick up an empty dish only to quickly discover it’s stuck to the table so they had be careful when they picked up the empty dish not to let whatever on the plate go flying. They did this with great care. Plus no touchie on the table. So this made a awkward situation. Even paper coaster were stuck to the table and leaving outline of where they were. See pic. When we shared this with the staff we were told we could move to the back of the restaurant (another words) a table with out a view next to large parties (worst table they could offer). They were well versed in how to respond as you can tell this has been going on a long time. They explained the cleaning solution had broken the seal/barrier/stan on the table. Which caused it to be sticky. Later conversations with a friend who works with with told me that very toxic and health hazard.. Never again.. They should have removed this table long before we got here as you can tell it’s been going on for some time due to the scratches on the table. Looked like unreadable graffiti on it. Due to the scrubbing. This is the Grand Hyatt - top tier restaurant- what? I would have expected this in a lower tier restaurant but this is the Grand Hyatt!! Pictures do not lie!!!
Just finished having dinner here with the bride that got married at the resort this weekend and with a few others (we were a party of 5). We received very poor service from our server. At no point were we greeted by our server, the bride instead got up and looked for someone to come serve us some drinks about 25 minutes after being sat. Waters weren’t refilled and it was very loud, the bar area was busy but there wasn’t many people dining in for food so it didn’t make sense the lack of attention from our server. Our group is young and mostly people of color so unfortunately we’re used to poor service but it’s still disappointing being treated like you can’t afford to be there. When we finished our meals and got our check our server was nowhere to be found. We spent 20 mins waiting for her to come back and about another 10 we were walking around the restaurant trying to find someone to let us pay. Unfortunately the food quality was not good either. We tried 3 of the other places in the Grand Hyatt as well and this one was the most disappointing.
I wish I was allowed to give a zero star as this experience was not great. The host was amazing but once I was sat at my table I was never greeted nor even given a glass of water in 30 minutes, so I decided to leave. I raised my hand to get the attention of the waiter/waitress and still nothing. Kinda sad I spent 7k to come to the hyatt for a grand experience and got about a 1k experience. I could of stayed home for this. Not impressed at all and I actually do hope you loose business as this was a waste of time. Only expect a bar here, without any good service other then from your host...
