Food was great and Elisabeth was amazing! So attentive! We will definitely be back when we’re in town.
Clean bathrooms, paved parking lot, house made pies, great place for breakfast. Reasonable/decent restrooms, quick and easy location. Been here many years. They have a pretty diverse menu. Not a scratch kitchen but the food is pretty good. Service is usually great. My server today was very helpful with recommendations considering my dietary restrictions.
Old School perfection, Texas friendly, nice portions, excellent coffee.
Well gawwwwdang! Café 290 is doing it right! I have to be completely honest and say the very first thing I saw on the menu, I ordered. Having had a night of drinking the night before, a Fried Green Tomatoe BLT with fries and a chocolate milkshake was exactly what I needed. Annnndddd MAN WAS IT GOOD! Fresh. Nicely grilled Texas toast. The right amount of bacon. Whoever is cooking in the back knows what they're doing. We definitely had to try some pie sssooooo slices of coconut cream and chocolate ice box came back to Houston with us. Thanks to the friendly staff and great kitchen crew hooking it up! Y'all rock🤘🙌🏼
Excellent breakfast all day at prices you would expect to see about 10 years ago! (Which is great considering how expensive most restaurants are these days.) Friendly and prompt service, endless and speedy coffee refills, and an ambiance that hearkens back to the Austin of old. Parking can be a little rough, but that's usually a sign the food is good!
Your chicken fried steak and macaroni and cheese is the bomb Yummy for my tummy Im new here and haven't breakfast yet but I'll bet it is incredible
Service was excellent from Elizabeth B! The food was cheap and came out quickly. Clean bathrooms and tables.
After they opened a location in Taylor, I had to try the original. Was not disappointed! Everything was fantastic and will definitely be back to both locations!
Haven't been here in 15 years, and it tastes exactly like I remember. I love 290!
Stopped by 290 cafe. Ordered chicken fried steak and it was HUGE. Others ordered breakfast and they are enjoyed it. Had to sample a slice of Reese’s pie, oh that was GOOD. Service was great. Will come back if around the area.
Top notch service and great food. A real classic diner, not the commercial types you get in the cities. Great prices and value for money.
So yummy. Try the chucks special. Good country cooking sure to fill your soul and your belly
Updated Wednesday, August 2, 2023 The food is still good. Really large portions. Service is simply great. Friendly, friendly staff. Good food. Great service. Haven't been here in ten years. Will definitely come back. Update: They close at 2pm. We didn't know this and didn't leave till after 230. If they minded, they didn't show it. I really appreciate that! Five stars!
We had a great experience here on 4/7/18 for a late lunch. We were greeted immediately, served in a courteous manner, and the food was great! Unexpected stop had delicious pie (not many places make meringue anymore) and a great atmosphere (child friendly & polite). I would recommend stopping in if you are in the area. Ask for Michael if he is there - great service (peppy, happy, attentive, nice).
Great friendly service, home cooked food, and desserts better than anyyhing sround, dont miss out
My dad took my husband and I here this morning 10/19/2025 every thing about this place was amazing 🤩🤩🤩 the food was delicious 😋😋😋🤤🤤🤤 the service was warm and inviting always had a smile and didn't even have to wait that long for the food to be served!!! I would 💯% recommend this restaurant to EVERYONE who passing through or if you live there and haven't tried it it's totally worth the$$$ Austin/Manor Texas🤩🤤😋🥰😜🔥🔥🔥💯💯💯
I got breakfast and it was good. The pancakes were do thick. I couldn't finish my meal. Very large portions.
my girlfriend just moved down the street from this joint, and we’ve been coming here more and more often. the food is fast and IMPECCABLE every time. the servers are always nice and coffee refills are swift. if you heed any advice from strangers on the internet, get the grilled chicken sandwich (or really any of their sandwiches) with FRIED GREEN TOMATOES. the green beans rock my world, and their chicken fried steak is proven to skyrocket my girlfriend into a quick coma. LOVE this place, best affordable breakfast in all of Austin.
This restaurant is easy to access from the highway. They have plenty of parking. When you go inside it smells like your grandmother's kitchen did when you were little. They literally have fresh baked pies, cakes and muffins daily. They are displayed in a glass shelf, and sold out fast. I went there 2 days in a row. The chicken fried steak is huge! The eggs and hashbrowns were perfect. I took pictures of the desserts, but I can't find them. Sorry. I will go back!!!!! Anyone who has been here knows why it is rated a 5 star. The food, the service, even the awesome customers who are regulars. I saw a cake, fleshly made (all desserts are!!), and asked for a piece after I had eaten. The waitress told me that a table had already paid for it, they were celebrating a birthday. I said ok, give me pie!!! She came back and told me that table offered me a piece of their cake, WOW!!! The cake was a buttermilk coconut with chocolate. I told her that was very sweet, but they had a large table of people and I could not do that. This restaurant will definitely be a stop for me no matter where I am in the western part of Texas❣❣
Everything about this place made me feel welcomed. I'm going to start being a regular here. I recently moved to manor after getting out of the Marine Corps this year and so far this has been my favorite place to dine in since coming back to Texas.
I ordered to go dinners and they were packed so well.Everything was so good once I got all the food home. The staff there was very friendly as well.
Just left 290 café. The meal was great. The waitress was extraordinary. Everything was well and the price was good also. Thanks Madison for being such a great waitress. Keep up the good work.🌺
Everything was great! My husband and I both loved our food. And they have a pretty decent amount of selections. Our waitress was wonderful. Very attentive, and friendly. Prices are reasonable, especially since we got a ton of food (had to get a to-go container to take home what I couldn't finish) Good atmosphere. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit. And we will definitely be back! There's a lot of dishes that we want to try.
Great American food. Large portions, great pies, consistently yummy. They also will accommodate allergies.
Hello! We have eaten here more than once and it's always good! My meal for this trip was a Breakfast - very generous portions and very tasty! I added the Ham Slice extra. Yum! Their Chicken Fried Steak is pretty doggone good, too :) If you're passing by the 290 Cafe ... stop in and grab something good to eat! Friendly staff too. :)
Great food. Fried green tomatoes are crispy and fresh. Chicken fried steak is tender and delicious. Cool old restaurant, must try.
Location is easy to access. Handicapped accessible. Easy to read menu. Very friendly service [Kodi was great] that was quick and correct. CLEAN. Food was very tasty!! The chicken fry was shockingly big and delicious. Choice of brown or white gravy. I had the green blt and it was YUMMMY. It had fried green tomatoes on it. They have a scratch kitchen to include a nice list of desserts. They also have beer and are biker friendly. This is good cookin'! Military discount is available.
I have been here many times, and the quality of food and service has been very consistent. Love that they have breakfast-all-day. Love Cafe 230!!
Very good cute little place, a lot of the food was homemade so it took a while but I was willing wait. The servers are all very nice and compliment you a lot, make you feel like film even! I'm glad we tried this place even though it's not as "glamorous" as some of the other places, it was still worth it!
Flavor: A- Service: A+ Tea: A Solo dining: A Okay, if you like chicken fried steak then you've got to try the one at Cafe 290. It's thin, perfectly tender, lightly battered, not greasy or gristly, and the batter sticks to the steak perfectly. In a dream world, I'd make it (and the gravy) a little more flavorful but I'd still be happy to eat it again and again as-is. Everything is made from scratch, including the delicious buttermilk pie I had for dessert. I've also had a take-out burger from here that was great. So it seems like you can't go wrong! And anytime I find myself in this neck of the woods, I'll definitely be back!
UPDATE 2 years later… They have redone the inside , new menus. Still a great place to stop in for great home cooking! This time had Fried green tomatoes, fried pickle spears and toasted ravioli Eating in this old army bunker is great! Home cooked food had great flavor. Steam table for lunch. This place has been here since Eisenhower. Pies & cakes are amazing. The coffee is off the hook, roasted 15 miles away has a taste like no other.
What’s not to like at an informal packed Sunday brunch leaving Austin on the way to Houston! Great high test Java, eggs over easy just right, crispy hash browns or cheese grits, and a Texas sized homemade biscuit with ham slab or pan sausages. Fair price for a well done traditional breakfast, servred by an efficient personable waitstaff and free wifi! Put this one on ur “go to” list!
This was great! The food was delicious. The staff was friendly, and sang along to the music that was playing. (But not in an obnoxious way.) The food also came out pretty quick.
Just went for pie and coffee in the afternoon. We ended up with cake, pie and coffee. All were outstanding! Also learned a little about the history of the place , a pretty cool bonus!
This spot is pure comfort and culture. You can feel the history the moment you walk in, and the food is straight-up home cooking done right. The plates are affordable, loaded, and so satisfying — from the delicious pancakes and waffles to the unreal slices of pie. Nothing fancy, just big portions, big flavor, and a place that feels like it’s been feeding the community with love for years. Absolute gem ☕️🥓🥞
We have been coming to Cafe 290 since we moved to the area in Feb of 2025. Every time we are greeted instantly by the warm welcoming staff. Our favorite server is Leila. She is very attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and always makes sure out toddler is having as good of a time as we are. The food is always fresh and made to perfection! Thank you Cafe 290 for being a great spot to give us a night away from our own kitchen.
Once again, Cafe 290 made my day with a delicious and filling meal. I can't ever leave without taking a slice of their homemade pie or cake home. When I'm in the area, even if I'm not hungry, I swing by to pick up pie or cake to go. Last weekend I was in Austin for a work event that ended very late in the evening. I was dead tired, skipped dinner and went straight to my hotel to sleep. The next morning I stopped by Cafe 290 to refuel before my hour long drive home. Not surprising for a Sunday morning to see the parking lot full. I was famished and knew the food would be worth a wait. Luckily, I got the last open parking spot available. When I walked in, as always, I was promptly greeted and seated. Almost every table was full so my luck continued with getting seated right away. While my server was very busy she was very attentive. I ordered a 'build your own' omelette with grits (I skipped the side of bread offered). In a matter of 10 minutes my meal was served. I normally add butter to my grits, not this time! They were absolutely perfect, best grits I've ever had at a restaurant. The omelette was stuffed with everything I asked for, they don't skimp y'all! I normally have to ask for a to go box when I go out to eat, I left with a clean plate it was so delicious. I don't recall my servers name but I've eaten here many times and all the servers are friendly, knowledgeable and attentive. My meal ended with another bit of luck, I got the last piece of key lime pie, my favorite. Thanks to all of the gals and guys who keep Cafe 290 running like a well oiled machine. This is my favorite diner, I promise I will be back soon :)
I have only ever been to the Taylor location. So far I have tried the chicken fried steak which was the best chicken fried steak I've ever had in my life!!! I don't know what they do with the breading but it's magical!! The 290 nachos are super good, as was the quesadilla!! The burgers are very delicious and I had them with the parmesan fries and I've also tried the onion rings both of them are very very good!!! Chuck's deluxe is so good that queso that they put all over it is absolutely phenomenal!!!! The catfish is absolutely delicious!!! It's the best in town!!! Hands down!!!! As far as their breakfast goes I've tried the omelettes, the farmhand and the Migas. I would highly recommend all three of the above!!!! And last but not least I did try the Reese's pie and I can't tell you how much I love that I think I could eat that everyday!!!! Next thing on my list is to try the shrimp And a different pie,.
Cafe 290 is a great change to our dining experience in the Taylor, TX area. From great breakfast selections to amazing entree choices, this restaurant has it all. I believe the greatest quality this location possesses is the staff onsite. Marisol gave us an opportunity to overview the menu and came back with a much needed enthusiasm in the food service industry. Ken, the owner, came by to ask if anything additional was needed. Owners, like him, are what help a restaurant and staff to thrive, not only survive, in this face paced environment. The chicken tenders were properly sauced and glazed. The chicken fried steak was cooked & spiced delightfully and was the home style meal it was intended to be. Their special (Chuck’s Deluxe) is a staple for their other site in Manor and is hoping to be one here with the Ducks. Come through and enjoy some home style cooking with a twist, this side of 79!
Woooohoo love this place. Fluffiest and best pancakes when I’m too lazy to make them. Texas breakfast toast husband loved it. And we also got the hot dog so filling and filled with toppings. They have daily specials I believe. We got meatloaf to go. Will come back again. Back in 09/2023 we ordered to go for football game at home and then we were missing half our chicken wings (mango habanero) so we called them and they said they would take care of it for us. Sweet of them. I didn’t claim it because it was so long ago.
First time here! Excellent roadside diner food! Generous portions and fresh food. The Club sandwich was HUGE and the fried pickle spears were an unexpected and excellent side dish. Not pictured was the delicious Cherry cheesecake I had for dessert! Heather, our waitress, was super friendly and attentive. What a great little gem of a diner just outside Austin!
Love this diner! So yummy and great staff!! I go every Saturday before the barn. I love the BLT and fries

We have stopped by cafe 290 for many, many years. During our dozens of meals we have never had a bad experience! Employees are great, food is great and easy to get in/out of!
Just went after a long weekend at F1. Got there just before closing but server was super nice. Ordered the 290 breakfast plate which was amazing. Coconut cream pie is the best ever.

Great service and staff. The food was amazing and environment was very welcoming. The menu in person had a lot more options compared to what was posted on the website. The fries were delicious
I like the Chuck's chicken for lunch or dinner they do really good breakfast as well nice Diner style setting and service
No wait and seated immediately. Great quick service. chicken fried chicken....Awesome. Kids had burgers and ate them up before I could ever finish my mashed potatoes.

2 toddlers and 5 adults. Great food and service. They pushed together two tables for us and were great. Easy to access and wasn’t too busy.
A Manor classic 290 Cafe had been here forever for a reason good food friendly ppl
I had the Green BLT - bacon, lettuce, fried green tomatoes, avocado, and pepper jack. Paired with a side of onion rings, it truly hits the spot!
Been here several times and the food is always great, The atmosphere and history of the place is nice. Service was better this time.
Staff was very nice and took care of drinks and order very quickly. Food arrived quickly and was pretty good.
Stopped at this cute little spot after an appointment. It was really yummy. My boyfriend and I couldn't stop talking about how delicious it was. The reason I didn't give it a 5 is because one of my pet peeves occurred.... 1. The waitress forgot our juice order half-way through our meal we received it, then 2. She asked if we would like more water and never brought it. She just brought us the ticket and said good-bye. I know it may sound petty, but hey gotta have drinks while you're scarfing down homemade biscuits!
Food is good here, always have enjoyed the food. Good variety of food. Building is a bit older but presented well/decent. The service has always been interesting to watch. I see a couple mid-aged/older servers who always seem to be in a hurry and be overwhelmed even though the place is only a quarter full and there's always a few younger servers more-or-less standing around. They're nice when you talk to them but it seems like a weird dynamic. Food is good though :) A Solid go-to in Manor.
I live in nearby Pflugerville and go to Manor sometimes. I pass by this place & thought I’d try it. I went for the first time on a Saturday afternoon as the Saturday breakfast/brunch crowd was thinning out. It wasn’t too busy at all. I was served by Madison who was super nice. She was finishing another table; she took my drink order (iced tea) and that took about 5-7 minutes as she finished the order which gave me time to peruse the menu. She took my order - I opted for a junior burger & fries, no appetizer, something a little lighter. It took a good 15-20 minutes - which is slow considering my order, I’m a party of one, and it was not busy. Madison kept my tea glass refilled; I noticed she was also attentive to a young gentleman who appeared to be a suitor. No problem with this at all - I actually thought it was cute - except for the fact he ordered a piece of pie that came out with lightning speed - much much quicker than my drink or food order, that’s neither here nor there. My burger, once it arrived, was solid with a nice chargrilled flavor. The fries were crispy and slightly overcooked but no complaints. I recommend it as it seems like a good place for comfort food & breakfast. Still, 20 minutes for a jr burger for one when not busy was a little slow. Overall a solid place & Madison is super nice.
Phenomenal corn, so flavorful. Garlic Parmesan sauce is amazing too. Goes very well with the pork chop. One time I got perfect fried tomatoes, and the other time they were burned. My husband asked for no cheese in his burger and a side salad instead of fries. But side salad appeared to contain shredded cheese in it. Menu didn't specify and a waiter didn't tell.
Stopped by for dinner with family. Two got BLTs, and one got the 290. The food was good and reasonably priced. They also seemed to have a lot of options. It was a little bit dingy, but that might've just been the weather. (Cold, overcast, and rainy) Nice bathrooms and friendly staff. Overall, it's a good place to eat. I recommend it.
Old diner bing help togther by good service and big portions
I believe that the kitchen staff has changed, today's breakfast was not as good as it has been in the past. Over medium eggs are a good barometer of a cook's abilities and they were not quite right. Needs a little more practice.
Old time greasy spoon highway diner with great food. Place just needs some real cleaning not just superficial. I had a huge chicken fried steak that was very well seasoned and breaded, mashed potatoes and fried okra. Bobbie Lee had the highway 290 smothered chicken with rice and beans. He ate it with gusto but it looked like the afternoon heartburn attack. Which it did about an hour later. Service was excellent.
My friend and I stopped in for breakfast to celebrate the anniversary of her receiving a heart transplant. We arrived at 830am on a Saturday so plenty of space to choose from. I LOVE THAT THEY LET ME CHOOSE WHERE TO SIT!! Debra our waitress was sweet and listened to my storytelling. She had some recommendations that were good. I ended up getting waffles and adding chicken strips. (Yes they were real chicken strips not frozen) I got the jalapeno ranch on the side so yummy. The waffle was smaller than the picture but shaped like Texas. The picture made me think it was going to be the old fashioned ones. It was still delicious. I LOVE that they serve hot melted better and warm syrup!! It was so good I ate it all.

Good atmosphere. The food was ok, but not worth the price. We were charged a different price than what was displayed on menu. It said 13.99 for chicken fried steak but charged 17.49 on the ticket. Clean bathrooms.
I've been coming here for years and it's a solid highway stop. The servers were nice and the food came out quickly. The problem was the scramble was basically a chopped up omelet and I got the wrong potatoes and the food was just okay. My coffee cup had a ton of grinds in it and the server just said, we brew our own here. All in all worth the effort just don't have super high "home cooked" expectations.
I used to give it 5 stars, but after today, but not anymore. I ordered Megus. If there were eggs, I couldn't see them nor taste them. While I went to the restroom, my table got cleared!!!!!! I just said give me a piece of German chocolate cake. I told 3 people. Then, a 4th person came by and said, "Carrot cake," I said no, German chocolate! My waitress did say sorry, let me get you a tea to go. She didn't charge me for the Megus. When she said, "Let me get you an ice tea," I thought it would be free. Nope. I left with the cake, got home to find it was just chocolate cake!!! It will be a long time before I go back.
Just picked up lunch and was very disappointed. I got the Chicken Fried Chicken with Macaroni and Cheese and Onion Rings I also got a slice of Carrot Cake for dessert. The Chicken Fried Chicken was great and the Onion Rings were too. However, the Macaroni and Cheese tasted like watery noodles. It was light yellow but not a hint of cheesy flavor or seasoning of any kind. It was sitting liquid when I opened the container. The Carrot Cake was also flavorless. No spices (Cinnamon? Nutmeg? Allspice?). At $5.75 a slice, it was a splurge for me. So disappointed… Definitely not the Cafe 290 I remembered from years ago…
Looking for a great place to grab good breakfast in Manor? Well Cafe 290 is a great recommendation. I had never eaten here and other than fast food and breakfast tacos there's not much to eat in Manor. That is until you walk into this establishment. There's a great story on its founding and history as well as some additional information on the lo ally raostef and ground coffee they serve. The breakfast is good, nice variety but something for pretty much everyone. Great wait staff too very attentive also willing to give recommendations. I like to ask a lot of questions about a menue the first time I eat somewhere. This is not a one off occurrence, I will be eating here again.
Small town diner with American style food all day breakfast. Cheap prices and food is decent not my first choice for diner style food but gets the job done. Got the fried steak sandwich with fries sandwich was ok needed more flavor but the fries were by far the star of the show would go back just for the fries.
Great place to grab breakfast any time of the day but they also have home style meals.
Cabbage was sweet which was different it was good but I prefer non sweet cabbage. Mac and cheese was runny but good. Catfish was okay a little soggy definitely could have been fried hard and the tartar sauce taste like nothing but pickles. Was my first time trying not sure if I'll try it again but everything was okay.

Cold waffles and the breading doesn’t stay on the fried chicken. Chicken was cold too. Normally you can’t mess up chicken and waffles but this place does. It’s a cute diner but it’s smells so bad like old cigarette smoke.
I have tried to give 290 cafe a try a few times and its basic diner Food. Food choices are very limited in manor unless you want fast food.I recently did an online order and checked my food before leaving. I ordered the fried pickle spears and was not satisfied. Instead I was given pickle fries that was battered instead of breaded. They were overly greasy and burnt. I asked to get the item removed and the ladies at the front were confused as to how to get it taken off. They were unable to remove the item cause I did an online order and did nothing to assist. They said they were out of the other kind.
The food was really poor quality. Very extremely low quality ingredients and poorly prepped and cooked. Overly greasy and awful flavor profile. The menu was fairly limited, but I want to attribute this to them being a cafe. What was most awful was the service. They were not only unprofessional, but also overly and disgustingly "friendly" to a point where they made my guests and I feel uncomfortable. Tables and bathrooms were not just outdated, but very poorly cleaned as well. We honestly were starving, but did not feel comfortable finishing our food because we were disgusted with the service and the poor quality food and the lack of cleanliness in the restaurant and bathrooms. We did not want to imagine what the kitchen may look like. We definitely not only not recommend Cafe 290 Manor, but we also definitely will not be returning to this place. It is rare that I give a business a 1 star, but this place did earn anything better than this.
It is such a shame, because I do like to support local businesses. This is unlike cafe290, but the delivery I received was sloppy. I ordered 2 orders of the cafe290, they were soggy and they seem just to put them in one container with a handful of fries and 1 pickle. I’m a grown man and so is my friend, and we have big appetites. we certainly know this was not the full meal as opposed to when you actually go in and dine inside. That’s the mac & cheese as well, considering where in Texas that mac & cheese is watery and just awful. I called because I wanted to make this complaint, the lady who answered told me to wait a moment, I was very polite and said I’m missing an item. She then said “let me go the manager hold on one moment”, as you can see, I was on the line for 20 minutes before I decided to hang up and make this post.
Called in a order of chicken fried steak with fried okra and loaded mashed potatoes because in picture looks good well don’t fall for it worst chicken fried steak I’ve ever had it’s like rubber no flavor asked for brown gravy on side did not get the gravy and for price nope never agin will order that. Their goes my dinner in trash
We arrived at 12:05. After about 5 min they took our drink order, waters all around, which didn't arrive until we asked about them 10 min later. Then, having ordered the lunch special, we waited for another HOUR, during which we were reassured that our order was up soon, but we had to go. Left at 1:20 very hungry.
This location wasn't even busy but because the staff is so loud talking to each other it feels like the entire place is full. I wouldn't recommend bringing kids around either unless you're really cool with nudity because our waitress was rocking a naked woman on her arm and the other arm was just as lude. I guess appearance isn't in the handbook. The food is mid, you can get better at waffle house.
I was told by many people at this Cafe was a good Cafe and had good chicken fried steaks I mean huge chicken fried steaks that is one reason why I went because I love chicken fried steaks and they said that this restaurant was Bill Beck in the World War II or something like that so that's another thing I liked about it but when I received my order chicken fried with overcooked burnt on the ends mashed potato runny the cornbread sticky the only thing that was good about this food at my carrots were nice and hot can green beans nice and hot and I had a cold refreshment otherwise than this I would not return back manager could have said this meals on the house but didn't say anything
