Found this place by luck and decided to eat here. Place has been around a while and the previous owner loves owels (by the decor) food was incredible bacon, avocado burger was a 10+ flavor and you get your moneys worth with all the freshly cut toppings, they must have put something in the fries cause dang! They were additive very tasty and crispy. My girlfriend's burger looked as devious it was the green chile pepper burger. Keep in mind the place belong to grandma and they kept the decor as such, mind that and enjoy the food.
I loved coming here with my son Leonardo Kelley
We come to Grandma's Kitchen a lot while in Monterey its wonderful service and very friendly staff. I don't care for the biscuits and gravy but everyone's taste buds are different because my husband likes them. Great size portions on all their food well worth the price for the size you get. Now we have never been there at lunch or dinner time its only been breakfast haven't tried those foods yet.
Took my kids here on vacation they loved it. Relaxed, comfortable vibe, great prices, and sweet staff. Ate there for breakfast and seriously thought about going back for dinner but didn't want to over do it haha. Will definitely be a stop for future visits
Great service! Our waitress was funny and extremely kind. Food was great too! Definitely a place to stop if you are in the area and need a delicious and decently priced meal!
Incredible and accommodating service! Just enough food that we didn't have to bother with takeout. Definitely better than Dennys! I recommend this place for some old school grandma comfort food. Sweet people too!
My Buddy and I wanted a late breakfast. All other Breakfast Restaurants were closed at 2:30pm. The food is fantastic here!! I had a HUGE Ham & Eggs, and Buddy had Eggs Benedict. The service made my day, 1st day on the job, waitress Mary, was a hoot, great laugh. And Pedro is a Chef, not a cook! We will be back soon. I highly recommend a visit.
Ordered the pancake combo with sausage and omg YUM! The buttermilk pancake was delicious and honestly some of the best breakfast sausage patties I have ever had. The server absolutely crushed it. She was the only one on the floor serving 7+ tables alone and she tended to our needs very well. The hash browns could have been cooked longer and a little crispier but overall an incredible breakfast and would definitely come back. Only ask is for them to carry a vegan milk option for coffee like almond milk, coconut milk, or oat milk.
We were traveling and looking for breakfast. After checking some breakfast places on were headed for another place and saw grandma's kitchen. The lot only had a few cars so I went in my travel mate needed a booth (on crutches). It wasn't crowded, the folks seemed to be enjoying the food. Very welcome feeling. We got out booth sat down the server came over immediately. We took a little time going over the menu. Finally decided what we wanted. Our food was delicious. If I'm ever in Monterey again this will certainly make the gotta stop place.
Great breakfast place! My hubby had the SOS on potatoes and enjoyed it, I had the sausage and eggs with biscuits. The biscuits were nice and fluffy. Great variety in their menu and a sweet, honey place with good, friendly service.
Clean and cozy diner with cute and kitschy owl objects all over. The food was excellent and the service very friendly. My traveling companions are from UK and this was a fun first diner experience for them
When you come from the Midwest, you look for food that gives that home flavors. This definitely is on our list to return to. The staff was supportive kind and quick to refill our coffees. The food had large portions and definitely didn’t disappoint. The menu has a large selection. I can’t wait to go to Grandmas!
The food is delicious and you get your money worth.
We ordered takeout. Grandma's quality is always top of the linge with breakfast meals. Same for the pork chops on the dinner menu that my wife gets. She also had the soup and is thoroughly enjoying it. The restaurant is close enough to my job that we eat there whenever we can have lunch together. I don't mean good food. I'm serious. Top of the line!
Great breakfast. Our food was ready in just minutes. Great service. Our waitress refilled our drinks a few times and would check on us a few times. Would definitely consider having breakfast here. Decent prices. I’ll be coming back next time I come to Monterey.
Came here a year ago. Late review, but an amazing place for breakfast. Will be coming back in the next month
OMG.....The food was excellent!!! Freshly made, nice and hot. The coffee was delicious!! There was only one server but she was on it!! Left her a large tip because she definitely earned it!! We'll be eating there again and again!!!
So good, we had breakfast there twice! The kids (and adults) loved the food, the staff was friendly and helpful, and the outdoor seating for COVID was nice. Plenty of shade umbrellas. Best bacon we've had on a trip in a while.
Excellent food and great service. The Owl decor is on point.
Every time we are in Monterey, we eat here. Home-style food with huge helpings of food.
Great food, great service, nice staff! Honestly, the best food I have had in a while! One thing that is amazing is the fact that if you order a drink, you can get a free refill. Yet again, kind staff, great food so please visit.
Huge portions and I love the atmosphere here with all the owls, and the service was great. My wife & I were both a little bit disappointed with the main part of our respective dishes. They were still good, with great hash browns and perfect eggs, but the cook on both the squid and the chicken-fried steak was a little over.
Grandma's Kitchen is a quaint little place with wonderful food and atmosphere. We will return
This is one of the eating joints which should not be missed when you’re in Monterey. We felt like we’re at home being pampered by our loving aunt. And on top of excellent service the food was delicious. Presentation and flavor are all top notch. I even missed to click a photo 😁🤦🏻♂️ And when you’re there do not miss all those owl figures. Loved the food and the experience,I’ll definitely go there again.
Delicious. Had breakfast here. Amazing breakfast burrito, add bacon. Steak and eggs cooked to perfection, and sweet butternut french toast. Service was polite and attentive, with a welcoming atmosphere. Not busy when we got there, but a good place for group dinning.
I love this place the food it’s always hot and delicious. The service is always efficient and great. I love your banana nut french toast! My favorite reason to came here. Restroom it’s always clean and well stocked. I highly recommend this place.
Excellent food, generous portions, friendly service. The mediterranean scramble was superb, as was the breakfast burrito (every bite had some bacon), and the OJ tasted fresh squeezed. Definitely a return trip(s) is necessary 😋
The place is just as great as it was 40 years ago! Unbelievable:-) can't say anything at all" bad"nothing!
Delicious pancakes, crispy flavorful bacon, steaming coffee cup - never empty. Attentive fast service. Dog friendly to well-behaved pups. I regret not trying their apple pie. Next time :) Update 4/15/25 service quite different today. No greeting, smile, or acknowledgement when i arrived. I was basically ignored even though the place was practically empty. When the heavy set waitress having trouble walking finally made it to my table i was told they only do deli cut turkey slices, not roast turkey. I left $6 for coffee I did not drink and left. As I was craving real turkey n mashed potatoes w gravy. The kind grammas make. 😆 Sorry. no pics of coffee.
The food is very good, cooked perfectly, and the service was very fast.
Great place for a family breakfast😀 My daughter wanted to celebrate her 20th Birthday in Monterey and we stopped in the next day for breakfast. The staff are very nice, my brother asked for them to sing to her and they did giving her a Birthday biscuit. It was very sweet that they did that and she was Totally surprised! We will definitely stop in again if we were in the area. Thank you to the ladies for making our visit memorable and to the cook for making it tasty 😋
Grandma's Kitchen in Monterey never disappoints! The Grandpa's Omelet was packed with flavor—perfectly cooked eggs loaded with generous portions of ham, cheese, and veggies. Every bite felt hearty and satisfying. The Chili Cheese Burger was just as impressive! The patty was juicy, the chili had just the right amount of spice, and the melted cheese tied it all together beautifully. Served with crispy fries, it was the ultimate comfort meal. Great food, friendly service, and a cozy atmosphere—definitely a must-visit spot!
The service was great and the food is absolutely delicious!!
I often ate at Grandma's Kitchen back in the 80s and 90s - and it was the best breakfast place around. Since returning to the area, we were so happy to still see it around. It's still the best breakfast place! Comfortable environment, friendly and fast service with great food.
If it is possible to cheat on your spouse with a bacon cheese burger then I have just done it, with him right there. LOL. That burger was awesome. Usually I don't finish my food. I just push my plate in front of him and he finishes the rest. Not this time. He got a few fries and a pickle slice or two. WOW! That was a naughty burger. I apologized to the waitress for moaning while I ate. Can't wait for next time. This is a patty melt my son had.
15/10 highly recommend. This place takes you back to Sat morning breakfast at grandma's house with sat morning cartoons. The staff treats you like family the minute you walk in. Worth the drive. Worth the price. Worth the visit! Thank you so much!
This little mom and pop, hole in the wall restaurant was delicious, homey, kind, cute, and rightly priced for the area I suppose. The dishes are served on what would be Grandma's dishes. You get that small town community vibe inside. The food was good. It's cute. It was definitely worth the stop. We'll be back I'm sure.
Grandma's Kitchen is a staple when my family visits Monterey. Any item on their menu is guaranteed to be delicious! My boyfriend and I arrived during their Saturday breakfast rush, so the noise level was moderate but nothing crazy. I highly recommend their biscuits and gravy or S.O.S.; their country gravy is delicious! I love being able to tell who the locals and regulars are versus the out-of-towners like ourselves. We both ordered the Grandma's Scramble. I got mine without mushrooms. My boyfriend added a side of biscuits and gravy to his meal. 10/10! It was all delicious. If you are a Monterey local who hasn't yet tried Grandma's or visiting from out of town, you NEED to go to Grandma's for breakfast!
Grandma's Kitchen, Monterey We had no plans to visit here, but I'm really glad we stopped. There was a packed house however we were seated quickly. Truly they have a good turn over. This had the feel of a down home dive style restaurant. Personally most of the best restaurants are these in my opinion. We have reviewed 5 restaurants and 2 hotels since arriving in Monterey and each "upscale" restaurant had water that tasted like a swimming pool or just bad piping. Grandma's Kitchen had the best water! It didn't have the standard Monterey chlorine/pipe taste. Annie was our waitress. Lovely person! Very friendly and accommodating, yet not in your face talking forever. All staff that were there were fast moving like a well oiled machine. Customers were well taken care of. My husband's coffee was always hot. They don't offer wifi but their location sits on an excellent free xfinity connection. - Spanish Omlet Was excellent! Great flavor, packed with chilies and avocado, eggs seasoned wonderfully. If you enjoy the Spanish flare of Ortega chilies this is for you. - Ham Steak & Eggs Ham was not overcooked, juicy and seasoned well, eggs cooked to request, home potatoes were very well cooked, tender, not tiny bits but decent bite sized and seasoned well. - SOS biscuits with the creamed gravy (gravy with a creamed ground beef) brought me back to my childhood! If you have country roots, you'll know what I mean, if not, you have to try. - Total cost $35 .... wow that's a steal! Great place. We will be visiting again soon.
I never leave here hungry. This place is wonderful. It kind of feels like I'm in a bedroom. Or a big living room. Many owls watching over you in here, all charming. The company is great, lots of visitors to make conversation with. Staff are lovely and hardworking. Can't come to Monterey without coming here!
It saddens me to see any negative reviews in the slightest for this little diner. I won’t sit here and say it was a Michelin restaurant but that’s one of the things I loved about it, I didn’t feel like I was at just some restaurant, it felt cozy, homely, and instilled a nostalgia that sends one back to their childhood. The food seemed to harbor that enticing warm feeling you could only ever get from a nice home cooked meal, if you’re in the area and want a down to earth diner and a reminiscent food experience, this is the place to go
I had the absolute pleasure of dining at Grandma's Kitchen recently, and let me just say—it was an experience like no other. We were fortunate enough to have Grandma herself serve us, and her warmth and friendliness made our visit so special. The food? Simply incredible! Everything was made with the freshest, high-quality ingredients, and it came out fast. One of the things I loved most was their all-day breakfast—definitely a huge plus in my book! The menu is massive, offering a wide variety of options for all tastes. A standout for me was their homemade ground beef, which was flavorful and juicy, whether in breakfast dishes or in their must-try burgers. I didn’t get a chance to try the patty melt, but based on everything else, I bet it’s fantastic too. They even have a great selection of alcohol if you're in the mood for a drink. The love and care that the owners put into both the food and the service are evident in every bite. It’s hands down one of the best diners I’ve ever been to, and I can’t wait to go back and explore more of their delicious menu. If you're looking for a place that makes you feel at home while serving top-notch food, you won’t be disappointed at Grandma’s Kitchen!
The atmosphere at Grandma's Kitchen is cozy and warm, making you feel right at home. Our server was exceptionally nice and friendly. We sat outside in the patio area with our dog, which we really enjoyed. The prices are reasonable, similar to what you'd find at Denny's, with breakfast items starting around $17+. The portions were generous, which we appreciated. There's plenty of parking available behind the restaurant. We ended up paying $44 for two plates. Overall, I really enjoyed my experience here and would definitely return.
Very friendly service. I liked the owl theme which gave the place some extra charm. They were playing college football on ABC which makes me hope they can play some NFL games too. I liked their home style potatoes a lot. It came with onions and green bell peppers. The chicken fried steak had a good crisp and seasoning but the steak portion itself was too salty for me. The eggs were done as ordered and biscuits came out warm. I’d come back to try some other dishes when I’m in the area
For $10, you can get 2 eggs, 2 biscuits, and hash browns. Not bad for the price. This little dinner is bustling on a Saturday morning. The food comes out quickly and it was good.
Everything was excellent and delicious J&A Rain Gutters approves
I must make clear the standards I give this establishment 5 stars are based in my childhood memories. It is an older building with dated decor, owls everywhere! I could feel my mom's spirit in the decor, especially when I saw the collage of photos on the wall. What really blew my mind was they have S.O.S. on the menu. Just like mom used to make. If your looking for fancy, this place is not for you.
What a great little stop! At first we were like... "ummm" but glad we stopped. My husband got chorizo and eggs with the home style potatoes and he loved it! I got some sour dough toast and it was toasted perfectly. Waitress was attentive, food came out quick and hot!!
We came to eat at this restaurant and found out to be very good. I had the ham steak and eggs with country potatoes and side of their buisquit and gravy. The food was portion was big and well seasoning to the last bite! My wife order the Spanish omelet And it had red sauce. I try a few bites of it and i also end up loving the plate. Great seasoning, tasty and not too bad for the price. Hopefully their cooks are able to put out yummy plates like ours everyday. Hands down and i love that old feel of been at grammas house! Thank you guys for the hospitality and your yummy delicious food! P.S. if your in visiting the area i highly recommend it. It's better than Dennys!

Definitely hit the spot, service was great, food was yummy, and great views of all kinds of owls 🦉
If you come to Monterey you definitely need to have breakfast here! The food was delicious! Excellent customer service. The waitress remembered my husband's order from the day before! Food was so good we came back the next day!
Nothing fussy, just real food for real people. No Paleo adjacent avocado quinoa salads. Cozy, pleasant. Kind of on the small side, which is good for me. Quiet, too. The waitress was really nice, food came out quickly, and it was hot. Only issue is, the fried potatoes aren't deep fried. So, know that if you want crispy potatoes, get the hash browns.
This a a little hole in the wall. The ones that have the best food and best service. Would recommend 10/10. There Eggs Benedict is my favorite. Out of all the places I've had Eggs Benedict this has been my #1.
This place was really good, the squid was amazing, he fried it to golden perfection, the potatoes were great seasoned and buttery, and the eggs tasted like my actual grandma made them. Definitely will try again.

While on vacation, we wanted to support small business rather than spend our $ at a chain restaurant. Our party of 5 had a variety of meals and everyone was pleased with their choices. The portions were big and just like going to any grandma's house, you won't leave hungry. If we didn't live 300+ miles away, we'd be regulars!
In 1986 I was serving at Fort Ord, My Sergeant SSG Zink invited us for breakfast and we visited Grandma's Kitchen one morning. I was so happy that day. We had some good conversation about our job. Jesus, breakfast was really great!!! I loved them owls everywhere, I still remembered it. Thank you so much for your excellent service to our troops while at Fort Ord. Continue with the tradition. God bless you all. ❤ SSG Patrick Zink SGT Reinaldo Aviles PFC Alvin Bercega PFC Miguel A Santiago
Food was delicious! I had biscuits and gravy :-) I originally wanted a BLT for breakfast but they said it's lunch. The only thing that threw me off because everything on a BLY is a breakfast item except for maybe lettuce which I didn't think would be difficult to get a piece from the fridge and slap it on there but it turned out fine because my biscuits and gravy were very delicious!!
Grandma's Kitchen-sounds cozy ,because it is ! While on a short vacation with my family in Monterey, we passed this cute little diner. ( I always scout places to possibly grab a meal ) . Actually , finding somewhere different to eat out, has become part of our day's outing 😋 . We arrived near the end of their business day [ open for early breakfast, to late lunch ] and were greeted kindly and in a timely manner : the staff here are Uber friendly ! ( no pun intended ) We placed our orders and the food was GREAT. We ordered breakfast and wow, the cook here makes PERFECT eggs 🥚 😋 We enjoyed our meal so much, in fact, we went back for breakfast the next day. This time , we arrived early and this place was CROWDED. ( breakfast is clearly a favorite staple at Grandma's 😉 ) This is a relatively small Diner ;,what this diner lacks in footage , it makes up w/ their courteous service and large portions . Great 👍 place to start your day!
We go here for breakfast frequently. The food meets my partners expectations which are high and the service is reasonable considering it is usually one gal that handles the entire restaurant. Outdoor seating is nice but service outside is a bit more challenging. We feel comfortable and just ask if we need something.
Good old fashioned diner. Food was great, large portions, friendly staff. A little pricier than we expected but worth it.
Egg and bacon sandwich was good. Server was pleasant. Restaurant was small and bathroom needed service. The floor was dirty. I didn't see a rating on the door and that was a little concerning.
First time visit and we were very happy with the food and service. We tried other places here in Seaside/Monterey, in my opinion this is far the best for the amount of food and the price you pay for. I will definitely come back for Lunch/Supper before we leave California.👍
You will never, ever leave this place hungry. It took a long time to get drinks even, because it was very busy. They need to hire more staff. The waitress was doing multiple roles including checking people in, cashing people out, bussing tables...everything herself. Hire a cashier to work front of house so the waitress can focus on the customers and serving food. The bathroom... The toilet almost fell over and it kind of reminded me of what I've read concerning Japanese prisons. The restaurant itself is old and dated but in a good way. It is "grandma's kitchen" so they get away with it. Also included in the environment is the classy smell of Brut cologne and freshly styled old lady hair. It is a hot spot for the older crowd and children seem better seen than heard. We got some side eyes from several guests because my kids don't know how to shut up. Food was standard American greasy breakfast fare. Everything tasted pretty much the same. Like greasy breakfast. HUGE plates and there is no way you'll want to eat for days after eating here. Great place. Average food. Cool nostalgic environment. Enjoyed my breakfast here, but probably wouldn't come back.
Service was very good, specially the lady who was serving us was great. Food was worth the price, overall a nice place.
I had this steak and eggs breakfast meal and it was really good. The customer service was also very good and I had a good experience. I'll definitely come back next time I'm in Monterey.
Solid local breakfast joint with all the expected breakfast offers and some tasty looking lunch specials.
Food: I ordered the Mediterranean scramble, English muffin, and hash browns (extra toasty). The food was good although we were disappointed that they "were out of salsa" although lots of the menu items were Mexican food. Service: The waitress seemed distracted and was talking on her cell phone... Atmosphere: Very tight booths with tall tables. So if you're a person of bigger girth, just be aware. It definitely felt like a Grandma's kitchen. They had owls everywhere! So if you're superstitious about owls, maybe eat somewhere else. I thought it was cute, but others might find it terrifying.
The place is pretty cozy and it's open early. The waitress was nice and efficient. There is a TV screen with the specials on it. We did not see it until after we ordered, but that is on us. The omelettes are a little pricey, but they were filled with lots of meat and cheese. The country potatoes were delightful-not fried and not overly greasy and well cooked and flavored. The biscuits were awesome. We ended up spending over 50 bucks for two dishes and a cup of coffee. I guess that's how it goes these days.
HAD SOME STEAK AND EGGS ALONG WITH SOME PANCAKES. EVERYTHING WAS GOOD EXCEPT FOR THE STEAK THAT WAS A BIT TOO CHEWY AND NOT TO MY TASTE IN STEAKS. NICE ENVIRONMENT AND GREAT SERVICE.
So far a very Local food place. Prices were similar to chain restaurants. But the quality of this place was far better. Can someone explain. SOS breakfast.? (Non military family). Service was excellent. This is local as you get. Support your locals wherever your taste buds take you.

Friendly staff, which raised a third star. Food is poor to unremarkable, mashed potatoes from a box, etc. This is pretty much diner chow, but there's nothing that makes it stand out, like great fried chicken or whatever. Price was OK and again the staff is very nice. Maybe it would be better for breakfast, but it will likely be everything from a boxed mix. I did like the extensive owl theme the restaurant has used.
This is a nice small place to grab breakfast. Although I left disappointed. My waitress never came back after serving our food. I found the sausage patties to smell and taste bad. I mentioned it to the waitress when she dropped off the check. Unfortunately the response was it wasn't bad because she had severed that sausage a few times that morning. I'm sure they have great food. Just stay away from the sausage patties.
Food was ok, service pretty slow, nothing remarkable about the place at all. Will try and alternate breakfast spot next time.
Small family owned restaurant with very simple breakfast items. The place is clean and the staff was very polite. Walk in and find your own spot. I ordered the eggs and bacon breakfast with an English muffin. The hash browns were okay. They gave me 5 pieces of bacon though. Five! My wife ordered Grandpa's omelette with country potatoes. Spinach, ground beef, and mushrooms. She liked it. Overall the place is good. No major problems or issues to speak of. Good place to try, but honestly nothing that says I have to come back. I appreciate the hospitality very much! Thank you!
The food was ok. The waffles weren't as good as Belgian waffles, not bad though. The scrambled eggs were really runny, not cooked all the way. The bacon was the best of it all, super greasy though. It definitely wasn't worth $50 for both me and my husband.
The food was good. The service was awful our server was looking at her phone at the counter for 20 minutes finally came to get our order then when she brought it to us she set it all down walked away very quickly to go back to the counter to look at her phone. So we had to get up and ask her for ketchup and napkins. Then I used the rest room what a horror that was step down out of nowhere and dirty, I got sick to my stomach just seeing the filth . We will not return.
Food is overly priced. Bacon was over cooked, pancakes were cold, coffee was bitter even with extra sugar. I would not recommend this place. Spent way too much and food was not that good, very disappointed
The most uncomfortable breakfast I’ve had. The seats are insanely uncomfortable. Everything about this restaurant is odd. The food was fine not worth coming back for
First time here. The eggs Benedict were ordinary and non homemade hollandaise sauce. Cooked as ordered. Friendly service but had to wait and wait and wait for the waitress to quit yacking with someone on here phone out loud. Other options around. Lotta freaking owls in there.

The food was decent. Our order was taken in an okay manner. The service became horrendous in regard to my two year old. She was piling up sugar packets and building a little fort. She was being quiet and enjoying herself. We don’t let her rip up the sugars and planned on reorganizing them on the caddy. As the food came the waitress snatched the sugar caddy away and scolded us. My toddler cried profusely. She was startled and emotional which is normal for a toddler. I had to go outside to console her while my food got cold. I offered to pay for the darn sugar packets if it meant having a peaceful breakfast and got a dirty look. To the very least ask the parent to get the sugar packets away from the child and not just snatch it away from the table. If you hate children and families, please advertise that. I owned a breakfast cafe. We had many families and children and believe me we dealt with all kinds of situations and messes and I would never in a million years treat a child and family this way. I immensely regret giving this restaurant a try and want to thank you for putting a damper on our morning. Exactly what a parent needs.

This place is horrible! we walked in and she did not acknowledge us.. we asked if we could sit outside.. she said well I am by myself so just wait.. it wasn’t even busy.. We went outside and I could see that she was clearing a table.. it took at least 5-7 minutes before she came outside, with an attitude. we asked for coffee and said she would be right back with it.. she proceeded to clear another table, which she didn’t need to do since there was plenty of clean tables.. after a few minutes we still didn’t have our coffee so we left! I am a former restaurant owner and you always take care of your customers first before anything else.. she didn’t need to clear those tables at that moment and she acted as though we were a bother…
There was literally no one outside and the lady refused to let us sit on the patio with our dog. She was watching stuff on her phone with NO COSTUMERS. Looks like that’s her preference 🤦🏻♀️
Very dirty place food was cold rude service and the bathrooms were horrendous only gave one star cause I can't give zero stars DON'T DO IT!!!!
It’s a really cute place, my kids loved the owls so much however, the food was not good at all. I really wanted to like this place but the food was very low quality.
My husband and I are amazed that the reviews were so high. Both of us got the SOS and very very disappointed. The flour haven't been cooked off it tasted horrible. My potatoes were bland and some were soft others hard as a rock.
