The steak we shared was one of the best I've had. The meal was really good but our table for two was right next to the kitchen entry. That part was not too enjoyable. I would definitely go back, but I would request a different table location. One hint though... Skip the cannoli.
The best steak I’ve had in my life was the beef wellington, even as someone who hates mushrooms. My partner, who doesn’t like seafood, also loved the crab cakes, which were not fishy in the slightest.
I love the atmosphere at this place. The bar lounge has a great happy hour. The food is top notch. We try to go there once or twice a year because it does get pricey but its worth it. The servers are really good and tend to have stellar recommendations of drinks to pair with your food. They dont try to force drinks on you instead listen to what you like and recommend similar taste. I ended up getting the first IPA i can truly say taste good in my opinion. But i really enjoy this place. Ive had the porterhouse, risotto, sand dabs, shrimp alfredo, escargot, and i loved everything so far. Seasoned just right so you can taste all the flavors, nothing is overpowering. Must try. Just make sure you make reservations because it does get full especially during the pandemic.
The Whaling Station Steakhouse is a long-standing, upscale steakhouse perched just above Cannery Row in Monterey, California. For over fifty years it has been a go-to destination for prime USDA cuts, slow-roasted prime rib, and steakhouse classics, served in a “casual elegant” setting with an award-winning wine list and full bar. Their bar has its own devoted following and menu, and they offer private dining spaces, free private lot parking, and weekday & weekend hours starting around 4:30PM daily.
We called in here after a long day travelling around Northern California.. We looked around Monterey for something to eat and found this steakhouse . The staff made us so welcome, we only ordered off the bar menu so sat at the bar where Akex one of the senior bar staff served us . He was EXCEPTIONALLY polite and was really helpful and a joy to speak with . Unfortunately we didn't get the names if the other staff there but they were also really really lovely . We ordered soft drinks and food off the bar menu , when it came it far exceeded anything we could of imagined, the quality was second to none . No wonder this place has awards on the wall. Honestly , this completely made our trip to Monterey so worthwhile. Please don't hesitate to try it , you won't be disappointed Well done everyone 👏
Best steak house in Monterey. Steaks are fantastic, they cook it perfectly to your request. My Filet was Pittsburgh style medium, and came out perfectly. What's better then the steaks are there appetizers and sides. Scallop potatoes are the best in the game. Do your self a favor and try the following: Firecracker Shrimp Carppacio Pancetta wraps Scallops Primerib egg rolls And do sleep on the Pavlova for desert
Great place for steaks and seafood. You can pick your own steak. I had the porterhouse steak 32oz. Caesar salad is also very good. Enough to share with my friend. And of course we didn't finish the steak. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. They also have music from local artists that play there. Definitely will go back there.
Incredible food, service and atmosphere. I really appreciated the kindness shown from both the hostess and our waiter. The food was so fresh and flavorful! Our family enjoyed everything, we will be back!
Everything was super delicious! The service was amazing! Ask for Paul as your waiter you will not be disappointed ❤ Our party had the linguine and clams, Ribeye, scalloped potatoes, beef wellington, NY strip, calamari, scallops, chocolate cake and a cannoli. There wasn't one complaint. My favorite was the ribeye.
My wife and I visit here on our wedding anniversary every year, this year was our 30th. Due to covid they had a very nice outdoor covered dining area with heaters. We were greeted by the manager and handed over to a lovely hostess who promptly and professionally seated us. You have the option of a menu or scanning one online. Our waiter was prompt to take our order, our appetizers were Wedge salad for her and for myself a bowl of Monterey's best clam chowder. Main courses were my wife, medium rare prime rib, it came with mash potatoes with flash fried onion garnish, and yourshire pudding. I had the Cowboy Ribeye, cooked medium rare and it had a perfect char on it. It came with mash potatoes flash fried onion garnish and spinach. Desert was no flour chocolate decadence cake. We had a perfect dining experience as usual. We'll be back in a few months to bring our sons. I might add that for the last 15 years we have never had a bad service and consistently amazing meals.
My aunt and I came here tonight for dessert and drinks. Our bartender, Ryan, was very knowledgeable, friendly, and made fantastic drinks. We ordered the creme brulee, tiramisu, and the pavlova. The pavlova was to die for!!!! It was my first time there and I absolutely loved the atmosphere.
The food was cooked to perfection. Our server more than went above and beyond to accommodate everyone in our party. Substitutions were happily made. It was a little pricey but totally worth every penny we spent. Would more than recommend this place and if I could give it more stars I actually would.
I was part of a group of 12 golfers from Massachusetts that stopped into Whaling Station Steakhouse. We did not have a reservation, and the staff could not be more accommodating. They set up a table for 12 and served us one of the best meals that anyone could remember. The steaks were fantastic. The service was exceptional. Monterey is very fortunate to have a great restaurant like the Whaling Station Steakhouse. We will be back in the not-too-distant future.
Blown away, I was not expecting this to be so good. Wonderful meal from the fresh table side Caesar salad to the dessert. The filet was perfect. The desserts were amazing. Worth every penny. The service was amazing as well. We were a group of eight and had amazing service and a great meal together. Thank you! This Restuarant has free valet parking. We needed to tip the attendant - we didn’t have cash but the attendant happen to have PayPal. We will be back for sure.
The minute we arrived we were greeted by the GM, Matthew Fisher and seated to a perfect table, then , Daniel, our server was so engaging & an expert on the menu & suggestions on what our likings/ preferences were. The prime rib & filet were outstanding along with the sides. The service was 5+stars as well as the delicious meal. After dinner we had a night cap & Justin and Amy were wonderful at the bar. Highly recommend this gem!!!
I had the short ribs and they were delish. Two others had prime rib and they both thought it was superb. Wine list is great & the sparkler celebrating our friend's 80th birthday was fun too!
I actually rate the steak as 4.6 but that is because this is fancy steak for sophisticated palates and I'm happy with a simple grilled and salted steak on the grill. That said this is still the second best steak I've ever had from a restaurant. The beef Wellington was legitimately delicious too but personal preference I'd rather get more scallops. They were the best scallops bar none and everything in general was exquisite. The crab cakes are good but not as amazing as grasings. Anyways overall, absolutely worth the price tag. Service was wonderful too!
First time at this fine dining establishment. Loved everything about it. Amazingly great food, perfectly eclectic atmosphere, knowledgeable and friendly staff and manger. Best place in town to celebrate our 33rd anniversary. Thank you, Monterey Bay Inn for the recommendation. Can't wait to come back!
One of the most scrumptious dinners we've ever had! Absolutely loved every dish we ordered from fresh delectable oysters, soft as butter escargot to creamy sumptuous crab risotto, perfectly cooked steak and finally the best Pavlova we've ever had. Highly recommend this wonderful restaurant to anyone who is in Monterey. Service was incredible. A big thank you to Carl and to Jeremy our Server for going above and beyond to make my Mom's birthday even more special with a Cannoli. Wonderful, energetic ambience and atmosphere. Will be sure to return.
Came here on Saturday night around 7:30 with no reservation with a party of 2 and was able to be seated at the bar right away. I typically enjoy sitting at the bar, but this time was even more special thanks to our bartender/waiter Ryan. He was friendly, super attentive, and made recommendations. The food here was very tasty and they had a nice selection of cocktails and wine. I got the filet mignon and lobster tail entree while my partner got the beef wellington. Both dishes were cooked and seasoned perfectly. Towards the end of the night Ryan introduced me to this drink with Absinthe. Was the perfect nightcap; thanks Ryan! :-)
Whale Station offers an exceptional dining experience with a warm, rustic ambiance perfect for any occasion. The service is exemplary, with knowledgeable and attentive staff ensuring a smooth dining experience. The steaks are cooked to perfection, accompanied by impressive sides like truffle fries and creamy mashed potatoes. The extensive wine list and expertly crafted cocktails perfectly complement the meal. Overall, Whale Station delivers top-notch service, exquisite food, and a welcoming atmosphere. Highly recommended.
This is a hidden gem. It looks like a normal dining resturant from the outside. When you walk inside you walk into a beautifully done decor that reminds you of a resturant from the past. Every table set waiting for its patron to enjoy some of the most exquisite food. You are brought a platter of steak cuts to see, hear and pick which one you would like to eat. The waitstaff will bring you another tray to decide which dessert you want to indulge in. We tried many delicious foods this evening. We started off with firecracker shrimp. Just the right amount of breading with a hint of heat. The beef tenderloin egg rolls were more than I expected. For dinner I tried the ribeye without the bone, freshly steamed asparagus and mashed potatoes. The steak melted in your mouth with each bite. For dessert we tried the New York Cheesecake and my husband indulged in the creme brulee. Both were exceptional desserts. Paul was our waiter and he was by far one of the waiters I have had at a restaurant. If you are ever in Cannery Row, check out this restaurant. Every penny spent is well worth it.
Our server, Abel, was absolutely amazing! He went above and beyond the entire time — super friendly, attentive, and made the whole experience so enjoyable. You can tell he genuinely cares about his guests and takes pride in what he does. Honestly one of the best servers I’ve ever had! We’ll definitely be coming back and asking for Abel again.
What a great experience! If you are in Monterey, this is THE best place for a wonderful dinner. The service was excellent (thank you Alex!). Everyone was attentive and caring. The food was fantastic. Great steaks, sides and appetizers. Location is perfect! Right in the middle of town! When I come back, this will be my first stop for a great meal!
We have a baby. I preface this with that because the service was outstanding given that context. Luckily, she was well-behaved and even had the hostess smiling and giggling as they played peekaboo across the way from one another. The food... omg amazing. Now I like really good food, and don't mind paying a bit for better quality. Not only was the quality worth the price, but the portions were generous enough to fill me up (but not so big that I had leftovers I had to awkwardly stow in a hotel room with no intention of eating them). Dinner was Beef Wellington, which I've never had, but can't imagine any other restaurant would have done better. The sauce was absolutely outstanding. Obviously made fresh with really good quality ingredients. The pastry was not too thick or overwhelming compared to the steak inside. The prosciutto complemented the dish very well. The mashed potatoes weren't too creamy or too lumpy. Just the right texture and flavor. They allowed me to substitute broccoli for the normal veggie so I could feed baby alongside myself. They served the broccoli with hollandaise sauce (on the side, which i appreciated because of baby). The hollandaise was slightly spicy, but not a heat I can't handle (and I can't handle much), but just the right amount to give it a kick of flavor. Never had hollandaise like that, and it'll be hard to find hollandaise that measures up to it. The broccoli was perfectly steamed. Not too soft, not too hard. Soft enough for baby, but crunchy enough for mama. Hard to thread that needle. The bread was baked fresh and served hot. It was a hit at the table. My husband usually doesn't eat bread at restaurants, but it was so good he tried it and ate a couple of slices. He had ordered the bone marrow butter alongside his steak. He ate some bread with that butter, and the results were out of this world. Crunchy crust, nice expansion inside to give just the right density. I bake bread & am kinda opinionated about fresh baked bread at restaurants. This bread was definitely something the restaurant does well, not some afterthought of wanting to serve bread, but clearly the kitchen staff takes the bread just as seriously as other dishes. Appreciate that very much. Now for dessert.... if you go, you have to, have to, have some. We got pavlova, and honestly I don't even know how to describe this heavenly dish beyond saying that the only time my baby fussed all night was when we weren't sharing it fast enough with her. The merengue was expertly made, expertly! It isn't an easy thing to make right, especially in a busy kitchen. I doubt I will ever in my mortal life have merengue that good. The vanilla cream on top complimented it to the point of ecstasy. Fresh chopped fruit consisted of strawberries, kiwi, & mango. There was a passion fruit sauce drizzled over it at just the right portion to compliment, not consume, the flavors. Drinks... husband & I had Blueberry Chopins. Very well-balanced flavors. I had a double espresso with dessert, & they didn't hesitate to bring me a lemon rind when I asked. The coffee complemented the pavlova well. Now, beyond the fact that everything was so delicious, the service was amazing. We have an 8 month baby, and usually places kind of look at that as something weary, especially in a really fancy steakhouse. Not here. They pulled up a high chair and treated her like the princess she is. They were careful about what they put in arms reach (hot plates, drinks, knives, etc), not just our main waiter, but everyone who came by to deliver anything. My husband is more of a meat & potatoes man's man, complete with flip-flops and shorts. He's not really a dress up and go out to eat type. They treated him well, and made him feel welcome. Professional, yet friendly, also clear that they enjoyed their jobs and each other. All in all, this place is worth every single penny we spent. It is a wonderful place for anyone who loves good food, good service, and doesn't want to feel like they need to be something they are not just to be seated.
So happy we came here! Jose was our server. He was amazing! We had ribeye steak, cook perfect and sides were so good! Cesar salad was really good and the firecracker shrimp was cooked, good portion size too. Dessert was the pavlova, it was perfect, light and not too sweet. The perfect ending to the meal. 100% all around!
We had the most amazing meal at the Whaling Station Stakehouse. We went the night before for some cocktails which were delicious so thought we would head back and try the steak.. and it did not disappoint. I had the Rib Eye which was by far the best stake I have ever had and my mum had the Prime Rib (the last bit which was the end cut… it ended up being a 16 oz and they only charged us for the 12 oz) which was very kind and again it was delicious. Both Alex (the barman that served us the first night) and Abel (who served us this evening) were very kind and personable. I would highly recommend coming here if in Monterey. One last thing to add was the delicious ceaser salad so fresh.
Excellent tender steak and amazing wait staff. We came in on a Saturday night around 6:30 without a reservation and we were seated within 10 minutes. The hostess was cheerful and sat us at a nice table for 2 by a window. The wait staff was so attentive that we were wondering if they had a camera on us because every time we took a drink of water, someone would come out and fill it back up. They have a nice wine list which included Camus and they also had a variety of enticing cocktails. We ordered the clam chowder and a wedge salad and they were delicious, then we each had the rib eye that was boneless and it came with mashed potatoes and steamed spinach with bacon. The steak was so tender and perfectly cooked. I should have ordered a smaller steak but it was delicious all the way to the last bite. Bread and butter come with the dinner and we loved it too! By far one of the best meals I have had in a while.
Hubby & I had our last date in Monterey at The Whaling Station before moving out of state. Sorry to say that in 23 years, it was my first time there. This place was so good!! The service was impeccable and food was so tasty! Definitely worth it!
First time here and did not disappoint. We had reservations and arrived about 15 minutes early and they sat us right away. Our server was very attentive. For an appetizers we had the fresh oysters and they were phenomenal. I chose to try the Iceberg wedge salad and it was excellent. If you are a blue cheese lover Definitely a must try. For my main I chose the lobster. Lobster was excellent. It came with garlic mashed potatoes which were phenomenal and spinach and fried onions, which also were very good. My boyfriend got the ribeye wagyu and let me tell you one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. It melted in your mouth. The flavor was on point. I had a classic lemon drop for my drink and I’m pretty picky about those. This one was great. I had two and definitely felt good after. Next time we are in town, we will definitely be going back.
What an experience!!! Felt so high class and looked after ! Food was delicious, I ordered snails for a starter and a lobster tail for main and it was out of this world! Lobster tail size was huge as well as perfectly cooked! Creme brule for dessert was a perfect finishing touch! Thank you team!
If you're looking for a great old fashioned steakhouse in Monterey, this is it. Right down town. Great staff, great food. Not cheap, but not overpriced.
A Monterey icon! Pat the Bull on the head on your way in. Eating at the bar is special with all the attention you receive from the bartender, Alex. French dip is a must try, sets the high standards for everything else on the menu. Table-side Ceasar salad prep at your table is also a must!
The best lobster I've ever had. The atmosphere is classic Monterey. Very special place.
We visited one night and learned they'd run out of prime rib. Daniel was quick to let us know if we wanted to visit the next evening, they'd save us two prime ribs. Our meal was so good the first night, we had to go back. Daniel waited on us, had a terrific personality, and we have some of the tastiest prime rib we've had in a long time. Go and ask for Daniel to be your server...you'll not be disappointed!
We went here for an early dinner. It was great, excellent food and service. My friend and I got French onion soup. Our other friend had the salmon. Our soup had excellent flavor with lots of delicious melted cheese. Out friend said the salmon was the best she's ever had. For dessert, we shared a pavlova. It was fluffy and light, with a lot of fruit and delicious mango puree.
Great steakhouse. The service was top notch. They made sure to keep everyone with a drink. I drink a lot of water so I love not having to wait for a refill. They make sure to show you the cuts of steak they offer and go over the differences. They were very helpful when anyone in the group had questions. I had the ribeye with mashed potatoes and spinach. I thought both the sides could use a bit more flavor, but still great and a little salt and pepper definitely helped. They offered 3 salts, regular coarse, spicy sriracha and smoked, along with freshly ground pepper. I had the margarita cocktail. Very delicious and strong, but not too strong. For dessert, our side of the table shared creme brulee and Pavlova. Both firsts for me, and both wonderful. The staff worked well together to serve our large group in a timely manner. I did not try it, but another in the group said the lobster was delicious.
The 32oz. porterhouse steak was cooked to a perfect medium-rare and the chef carved it up nicely for two to share. The mashed potatoes, asparagus and fried onions were delicious and the cannoli was very fresh and crunchy. The service was fantastic. Our service staff was very friendly and professional.
Sweet baby Jesus the ribeye was the best steak we’ve ever had, hands down! Their crab ravioli was so creamy with the best asparagus. If I could give 100 stars I would. Found this gem of a restaurant while searching for places to eat when visiting Monterey. Thank God for technology! My husband and I will definitely be back! Paul was attentive and is responsible for the recommendation on the ribeye. Every staff member was friendly, from the gentleman that seated us to the waiters that offered pepper for our meal. You won’t find a better steakhouse in California.
One of the best steakhouses I went to in the US, and I have had my share … very professional service, very good old vibe of a place that is not attempting to be modern but rather show its aged beauty… and very fresh, tasty and perfectly grilled steak, with the perfect side dishes to go along … and the Malbec of the Napa valley was exquisite. Would certainly come back if again in town.
The Whaling Station is truly the premier steakhouse in Monterey, serving guests with excellence since 1969. My husband and I enjoyed a superb dining experience from start to finish. We began with their fabulous French onion soup with a perfect brother and lots of cheese on top, followed by the incredible Cowboy Ribeye Steak—tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor, easily one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The sides were equally impressive: fresh thick asparagus with hollandaise sauce, a perfectly prepared twice-baked potato, and to finish, the most heavenly Pavlova dessert from New Zealand with soft meringue, whipped cream, and fresh fruit. A delicious glass of red wine paired beautifully with the meal, and an Irish Coffee was the perfect finale. Our server, Jose, was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable, adding to the warm atmosphere. We enjoyed the comfort of a half-booth and admired the lovely décor and artwork, including a lovely mural. The restaurant easily accommodates groups and provides a refined yet welcoming setting. The Whaling Station also holds a special place in my heart—it was the very first restaurant my husband and I dined at when visiting Monterey back in 1988 for a Paramount Pictures sales meeting. After moving here in 1990, we’ve enjoyed many wonderful meals over the years, and the quality has always remained top-notch. Highly recommended for anyone seeking an outstanding dining experience with high quality food, impeccable service, and the very best steaks in Monterey.
You receive service before experiencing the food and this place provided amazing customer service. The food was equally excellent. The bread itself was the best table bread I’ve ever had… crispy crust and the softest white bread. We ordered the oysters, Caesar salad, filet mignon and lobster fettuccine Alfredo, deliciousness! The atmosphere fine. The decor is a bit dated. Lovely place to have a nice dinner.
From the hostess who welcomes you to when you arrive the waiter who suggested me and explained the menu outstandingly. The manager cane a few times making sure I was enjoying the steak (and I surely did) and considering that the restaurant was full I truly appreciated his professionalism. I ordered a porterhouse and it was exceptional! Then a dessert to die for. Wonderful I will surely come back next year during car week.
Our go to steakhouse when we visit Monterey. The food is consistently spectacular. This visit westarted with fresh oysters that were sweet and plump with ocean flavor. For the mains, we had the Cowboy Steak, bone in ribeye, done to perfection. The other is the mahi mahi with crab risotto. Their crab risotto could and should be it's own dish. Super delicious! Finished off the evening with their creme brulle, cappuccino, and an Irish coffee. Great atmosphere curated by Paul and Mecedes. From the moment we walked in by a welcoming hostess greeting, our night was spectacular!
Amazing Experience at Whaling Station Steakhouse! From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere was warm and inviting. The food was absolutely top-notch — the steak was cooked to perfection, full of flavor, and paired wonderfully with the drinks. A special shoutout to Jermar, the bartender, who truly made our night. His attention to detail, friendly service, and excellent drink recommendations made us feel well taken care of. If you’re looking for a place with great food, a welcoming vibe, and outstanding service, Whaling Station Steakhouse is it. Definitely recommend!
Cannot say enough good things about this steak house. We visit every year for our anniversary and leave every time so happy with our meal and especially the service. Our waiter Paul was top notch, the hostess was so sweet, and the food was AMAZING. If you're considering stopping for dinner, this is the place!!
I will start off with the host being accommodating even though we didn't have reservations, thank you young kind lady! Food presentation was phenomenal how they bring you the real cuts of steak 🥩 on a platter to provide visual aid for the pickings, loved 😍 it! The server was very polite and had the best boundaries for coming around and not forcing anything upon us. Enjoyed the appetizers, am very much so an appetizer person. Highly recommend the Rockefeller if you like oysters! Prime rib egg rolls were definitely different but pulled it off. The clam chowder was amazing with the compliment bread 🍞 which was so soft and had crispy crust which made even that much better to eat it with!!!! The porterhouse 🥩 Steak for ✌️was so soft and the all the flavor is on the outside. Gotta love it medium rare. Aged for 21 day I believe, they'll let you know during presentation. Will mention that the middle of steak was more tender then tasteful. Ended the night with a canoli which was light and delicious 😋 Beautiful place and great decor!
Classic steakhouse. Old school vibes. Kinda cheesy but everybody on staff was super friendly. Drinks are quite strong. The $8 double baked potato is HUGE - WOW. The New York strip was fine but the filet mignon was phenomenal. The Caesar was good too. Skip the desserts though (crème brûlée and key lime pie weren’t good)
Overall it was a good place to eat. There were a few issues with our food that bring the stars down. The filet mignon and lobster were under cooked which by the time they were redone made the sides cold. So not a great experience to have different temperature foods. Service was really good. Atmosphere was pretty good as well. Most likely won't return though.
I wanted to start this review with a John Steinbeck worthy description of the scene. ‘Ocean air filled my lungs with zest, the sky was gloomy like a Nirvana fan, as summer slowly crept on in modern Monterey. We entered the establishment with empty stomachs and hopes high, holding hands like the otters in the bay.’ Scene set…. Had an enjoyable time people watching; first date jitters, some endless business meeting about bananas, and people in a fine dining establishment in sweatshirts. Dress code not strictly enforced post Covid worldwide apparently. Food was pricey, and I’m fine with that if the quality calls for it. Don’t get the ravioli, tasted like rosemary’s grandma’s perfume. I ordered the prime rib with Yorkshire pudding, potatoes and greens. Not my favorite probably about a 3 out of 5. My girlfriend enjoyed her beef Wellington; it wasn’t over salted, which seems to be a pervasive problem at most restaurants. For dessert, we had the key lime pie, which was tart but left a bit to be desired with the crust. (personally, I make a much better one at home) Server was high energy and the staff did a terrific job. I’d possibly give this place another chance trying a different meal. Got to love supporting small business, the blood line of America.
The staff was amazing, greeting us at the door and checking up on us regularly. Also free valet parking was a plus. My main issue is with the price of the food for the quality delivered. We ordered the cowboy ribeye and the filet with lobster tail for our main courses and the lobster was mediocre at best. Although the steak was cooked to perfection, the seasoning tasted like a simple mix of salt and pepper. I could have easily cooked the exact steak in my home for a fraction of the price. I substituted the spinach for asparagus and they gave me 4 asparagus for $5. The booze was also overpriced...
Excellent service with most pleasant waiters. Table side tossed Cesar was delicious and fresh. Lovely artichoke. Porter stake was more rear then medium, on a chewy side, and did not feel matching the price. Great wine selection with even better markup 🤑 Desert are plentiful and all looking inviting, we settled for pineapple carpaccio which was delish even if on sweeter side.
Jan 4th, 2023 The food was excellent. However I will say the appetizer I ordered (Ravoli) wasn't even filling, it had only five pieces but it was delicious. The steak was fantastic and I even tried escargot for the first time. The dessert was divine. Very light and fluffy. August 6th, 2025 So I ordered the Onion Ring and the New York Steak this time. The Onion Rings were good but not the best I've had and the Steak instead of being rare was medium/well done. One of the workers noticed and quickly made me a new plate, Thank you!
It was a nice place. An old school feel about it for sure , the decor the table settings etc. Waited an extremely long time for service and our food. Husband's steak was raw supposed to be medium. Disappointed after such a long wait. They were generous enough to remove it from the bill which was nice. Offered to remake it but didn't want to wait another hour. Just expected a lot more especially when your paying $65 for a steak. My salad however was amazing. It's salad too so not too much effort there. Waiter wasn't very attentive but nice. Won't give it another whirl but it's a decent place.
Had the prime rib and escargot. Escargot was very good. Prime rib was good and cooked perfectly. Got the 8 oz cut came out as a very thinly sliced sliced piece of meat (8oz?) They had a selection of salts to put on each bite of the meal which I thought was interesting and a nice touch. GF had the crab ravioli which were very good. Our waiter was excellent. Very pricy would opt for something other than the prime rib next time.
Celebrated our wedding night at Whaling Station after tying the knot on the Pacific Grove beach, and what a rollercoaster of an evening it was. We came specifically hunting for gluten-free options and top-notch steak – and honestly, this place delivered on half that promise spectacularly. Started with fresh oysters that were absolutely pristine, though I was genuinely shocked they don't serve mignonette. Even when we asked, they just shrugged. The escargot was a complete disaster – weird texture, off flavors – and we had to send it back without hesitation. But then the steaks arrived, and wow. My wife's Creekstone ribeye special ($88) was hands down one of the best cuts I've experienced at any steakhouse. Perfectly marbled, flawlessly cooked, and while the accompaniments were simple – just potatoes, spinach, and crispy onions – the quality spoke for itself. My prime rib was equally impressive, tender and juicy with excellent jus and horseradish. Those crispy onions on the mashed potatoes were a brilliant textural contrast. The evening took a serious turn when they served my celiac mother-in-law breadcrumbs despite our explicit warnings about gluten. She took a bite thinking it was safe, and it made her genuinely ill. Completely unacceptable for a restaurant at this price point. They did redeem themselves slightly with a complimentary wedding Pavlova that was divine – light as angel food cake with perfect textures throughout. Service was attentive and accommodating overall, but that gluten cross-contamination was a major failure. The steaks are legitimately exceptional, but the price point feels steep for what you're getting. Still, those ribeye and prime rib were restaurant magic.
We had dinner at The Whaling Station and the food itself was great—well-prepared, flavorful, and worth the wait. However, we were the only table that waited over an hour for our food, and unfortunately, we didn’t feel like our waiter prioritized us or checked in much during that time. What made the experience better, though, was the excellent service from the busser/assistant waiter Marcel. He consistently made sure we had water, asked if we needed anything, and was the one who boxed up all our food at the end. Marcel, thank you for being so attentive and on top of everything—you were the highlight of our service experience. Great food, but service was inconsistent. Marcel truly saved the night!
Service was great, and we ordered a lot as seen by picture of receipt. I couldn’t cut my filet with a spoon as advertised but the steaks were cooked to perfection and just needed a bit of added salt. Peppercorn sauce was essentially a gravy reduction thickened but not much peppercorn. Blue cheese butter was delicious! Oysters we had as an appetizer were spoiled. We had a shell and it literally coated our mouth with fishyness I had to stop gagging. We cook with fish sauce and make seafood often, and this was just awful. They said they would refund these oysters (it was still on our bill and we didn’t catch it until we left). Now my lobster….it was $150 for the filet and lobster and how can you screw up lobster? Well, The Whaling Station over cooked and over boiled so bad that I could spread my lobster with a knife and when eating it, it tasted like mushy ash. That lobster must have gone bad and they thought cooking the hell out of it would help, but it didn’t. Don’t order seafood here, even if it’s steak and lobster. Steaks were okay, but for the price I have had way better.
We went to this steakhouse after our friends were raving about it. Got a reservation and went in, the service was good. Lovely server who was attentive. It has an old school vibe of steakhouse, nice selection of wine and cocktails. I ordered the cowboy ribeye steak with scalloped potatoes and asparagus, my friend did the beef Wellington. They steaks were tender, but I think they lacked flavors, nice chars thou. According to the server they wet aged their steaks for days. Which was good. It was on the pricy side, but its a steakhouse on canary row so understandable, but I wish it was a bit better.
Ehh so it was underwhelming after a long drive. We wanted to celebrate the beginning of a new path but this place only made us question how we spent over $200.The food was nothing spectacular and overpriced. The beef Wellington was overcooked. The steak my wife ordered was anything but special. The dessert was ok but again no wow factor. Redeeming qualities were the drinks and the excellent service.
Unfortunately we almost left right after we walked in do to the atrocious smell that was some type of sewer or drain problem. We finally asked to be moved and stood the course. The hostess was not welcoming and a bit snobby. I think she needs to understand that people who can afford to eat there look all different ways and we were a bit offended after a long day in Monterey and surrounding. The waiters were however very pleasant and seemed to be professional and attentive. The meat was a bit under seasoned but tasted fine and the spinach and potatoes tasted well also. Apps were good, drinks were fine. A little.overpriced considering, pretty basic flavor, and the apparent attempt at taking the bottle of drain enzyme or other odor repellent out the door in front of patrons.
Update: 3.25.2025. Stopped by for a quick bite from the bar menu. We were limited on time so accepted the food served. The cheese burger & the chopped steak had little flavor due to the cook "smashing" the meat to cook it faster knocking out flavor and "juice." The cook put so much mushroom sauce on the chopped steak that was all you could taste. The salt level in the mushroom sauce was over salted, hopefully not with MSG. The mashed potatoes & sauteed spinach were good. I would not order chopped steak again. The cheese burger meat was a very impressive size, unfortunately the cook didn't know how to make a simple burger. The bun seemed old and hard on the edges so much that 60% was not palatable. The pickle garnish looked like it was recycled, definitely not fresh. Compared to our last visit, the food was dismal. We told the server about the aforementioned and he informed the mgr. When we were paying out, we learned, it was the mgr who stopped by asking "if we needed anything else?" Thought that was an odd time and question to ask being we were paying out. Perhaps it was just a bad day. PAST REVIEW WAS 5 STAR: Came out for a quick dinner at the bar. Bar menu has many great items, sandwiches etc., priced $19 - $29 with large portions. My wife enjoyed the Hamburger - Hamburger patty was no less than 1" thick. I enjoyed the prime French dip that came with a wedge salad and fries. Plenty of prime rib on my sandwich. In the past, we've enjoyed a steak dinner all has always been perfect. This is the type of restaurant that, if your steak is undercooked or overcooked say something. The mgmt wants to ensure a 5 star experience. Speak up!
I wanted to give this place 3.5 stars but couldn't figure out how lol. I made a reservation based on a recommendation from a friend and also after reviewing the menu. We walked in and waited idk 5 mins before someone walked over to acknowledge us and seat us. Lots of people looked out way but none of them walked over. We were finally seated and after looking through the menu we ordered our appetizers and food. When I asked for the pork chop the waiter looked at me like I was crazy. I said ummm the one on your menu on the website. She looked at me again perplexed. I pulled it up on my phone and showed it to her. She told me, uhhhh yes that is only for thanksgiving. I specifically made a reservation to the restaurant based on the menu online. It's a steak AND chops place. But no chops... I ordered the chicken the gf a steak and we order the table tossed Cesar. Whelp, it was not taken tossed and instead just came to the table not properly chopped. The pieces were way too large. The grilled oyster 2 of the 4 my gf said we're not edible. She spit them out. The scallops were great. The chicken I ordered was dry and gf enjoyed her steak a lot. She gave the place 4 stars based on the service 3.5 on food. Almost forgot the clam chowder was amazing.
Was so excited for this restaurant as it was for my birthday, but I have to say I was expecting a lot more, especially with the price range. The restaurant is beautiful and our waiter was wonderful, but the food was just… ok. I’ve been craving a prime rib roast, but it was dry. The steak my partner had was good, but the overall experience was just okay :/ which is definitely not what I want to say with how much we paid.
Great Food, But a Serious Oversight The food was excellent, and the overall experience started off great. However, we were served pork despite clearly requesting multiple times that our meals not contain any for religious reasons. This was disappointing and showed that our request wasn’t taken seriously. We hope the staff will be more attentive in the future, as the food itself was otherwise outstanding.
Took my wife and mother in law there after my wife gave birth to our first child because she wanted a fantastic steak and we had enjoyed steaks there in the past. I admit we weren’t dressed the most fancy but were still wearing modest attire and had a baby in a car seat with us so I told the hostess that we would be happy with being somewhere in the back out of the way to not distract from the ambiance of the restaraunt. We tipped valet 20 dollars on the way in and another on the way out, ordered alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks, appetizers, their highest quality steaks, sides, dessert, and post meal caffeinated beverages. When my wife ordered her first medium rare steak in 9 months she wanted to go big! She got the American wagyu ribeye. The waiter made a comment about a smaller steak which I corrected him and said she wanted that steak. He said “wow, that’s a big steak”. She then requested it medium rare and he said “medium?” To which my wife replied medium rare. He made another side comment which I couldn’t quite catch before I said something. He then tried to save face and say “O yeah, doing it right”. He then hardly ever came by our table for the rest of the night. The other server who I assume was a server in training however was kind and attentive after that. Our waiter visited a table of two splitting a steak and salad 6 times in one span before coming back to us once. We tipped 20 percent at the table even though it was hardly deserved and gave the server in training an extra tip which he worked hard to deserve. We then tipped the valet another 20 and left. All in we were respectful of the property although slightly underdressed and spent around 500+ for three people. The steaks and other foods were fantastic as they had been the times we have gone before, but I cannot get over the service provided.
Ordered the French onion soup and filet mignon. None of the food was hot, lukewarm at best like it was sitting under the headlamp for a while. Also my partner and I both got food poisoning after eating, and this was the only thing we ate all day.
Flavorless, tough and slightly overcooked filet and bone-in ribeye. Absolutely no marbling of ribeye. Did not taste seasoned. Very disappointing experience for our anniversary dinner on vacation, especially for the price. Would not recommend at all.
I was so excited to come here but was sadly very disappointed in our steaks. H I f been exposed to some of the best steak houses in New York, Texas and Colorado, this was not in the same league. The bone-in New York was served well done and was hot but we order medium well. The rib eye was ordered well done and arrived medium well and warm there was very little flavor in the steaks. They advertise having a dry-age room but we were not offered any dry-aged steaks. The Pavlova meringue dessert was delicious and the staff were friendly.
My girlfriend and I went to have a nice dinner. We were a little dressed up and had a reservation. When we arrive we are seated in a bar style booth with a cocktail table. Within twelve feet of us is a large table with a large and loud group, a table inbetween us that was only three feet or so away and the other side of our booth had a larger table that remained empty the entire night. The staff didn't think to push the table over or have us use a larger table. We started off with oysters, onion soup and a beef carpaccio. My girlfriend said the oysters were delicious, but that was the highlight of the meal. We ordered a Ribeye and a Beef Wellington as our entrees. My ribeye was order medium rare and was tender. But it was burned. The seasoning tasted like ash and it was more medium than medium rare in my opinion. Their "roasted garlic mashed potatoes" didn't seem to have much if any garlic and their "bacon spiked sauteed spinach" didn't have much of a bacon flavor at all. Any substitutions came with a five dollar upcharge. But it was edible. Unfortunately they served a beef wellington with RAW pastry dough! Fortunately the manger apologized and gave the replacement ribeye for half off. But this ribeye comes out with the center being RAW for a second time. The waiter had the audactiy to say it was ordered "medium rare". I am red green colorblind and don't work with food and I could easily see that the center of the meat was RAW. Not rare, but straight raw. The outside was a bit charred, but it needed to be cooked a second time. The french fries were fine, but definitely not worth the replacement when the dish is almost 70 dollars and it isn't even cooked well. The table could barely fit the steaks let alone appetizers or more than just the waters we had. I am happu I didn't waste money on a drink. I would rather go to a red lobster than burn my money on a bad experience like this.
We will not be returning. Prime rib and filet were both extremely salty as well as the garlic mashed potatoes. This was our first time trying the restaurant and our last. Tomahawk steak size is small compared to the one offered at the restaurant next door.
Look, I've eaten at steakhouses across the country, from the mall chains to top rated but when the highlight of dinner was the salad? At steakhouse?) That's not good. I ordered the Waygu NY Strip that came with garlic mash and sauteed spinach. Other than the greens salad, the entire meal was under seasoned. Service was good bordering on pushy. The steak was so fatty, thinly cut and under seasoned. The whole meal was underwhelming and was not worth the price tag.
I order prim-rib the meat that was my plate was lunch meat. It was no way 12oz of prim-rib. My wife got Sand -dib all could taste was oil. It was the worst, We live in Monterey and can go out to dinner anywhere but we went the whaling station. Talking to a manager doesn’t work he would play me off. So what can do is never go Back. You need to go next door and see BURT the sardine Factory and tell them I sent you over. Being a business owner for over 25 year customer service is everything. I spent over $200 for dinner for lunch meat.
Hostess was great. Waiter was entertaining. The starter bread was excellent. The twice baked potato was one of the best I’ve had. But the salad was mediocre, the $165 tomahawk was overcooked, the waiter was rushed and disinterested in the tables he was looking after (including when he asked how the food was, we said overcooked and dry, and he said ok great), and the valet wasn’t particularly friendly. See pictures of a steak ordered medium rare. Overall expected much more from this place, but would not recommend it.
