Recensioni di Joe Allen New York
The perfect pre theater or after theater hang. Not touristy. Has retained its original pub like flavor. The food is bangin’ good. The staff are pros. It’s great to slip in off hours and sit at the bar and have a bite. This is classic New York. Never out of style.
Different but magnificent experience. Arrived after Broadway on a Thursday night this place was full. Got a seat at the bar (being Aussie, this was different) and had a meal. Food was great and guiness on tap topped it off. Visit this place for the vibe, if not everything else!
Nice place! Food is good, but too much… I can’t finish all. It will be very to have a drink and desert after dinner.
Excellent staff, terrific menu and presentation, always enjoy dinner here!
A warm and inviting restaurant that's perfect for before or after attending your Broadway performance. The martinis are fantastic and the food is delicious. A must visit if you're in the Theater District!
Didn't eat just stopped in for a quick drink before a show. Place was great, everyone was friendly. Drinks were tasty. Food, appeared to be basic bar faire looked good with people enjoying it. Wouldn't hesitate a bit to stop in again for a drink or bite before a show.
I was in NYC to see "Wicked". A friend recommended this restaurant for lunch before the show. I'm so glad she did! The classic atmosphere serves as a cool and cozy backdrop for their delicious food and excellent service. From the time you walk in and are greeted warmly by the host, you are in for an awesome dining experience! A very special shout-out to Devon who was attentive, knowledgeable and welcoming! He was super ~ an actor moonlighting as a shining example of what a server could and should be. Thanks so much Devon!
Hannah, our server was a delight and this was one of the best meals we had while visiting New York City. Thank you to Hannah and the rest of the management for such a lovely experience. We dressed up and felt like Superstars on our way to a Broadway show because of the treatment we had. The food was wonderful. We all ate and drank some of the best tasting food in New York. Conveniently located for anyone going to see a Broadway show. This is a must place visit for anyone who wants quality dining. It wasn't overly priced compared to some of the other restaurants and what you got was well worth the value. Can't wait to come back and visit and hopefully have Hannah wait on us again. Cheers!
Enjoyed a fantastic dinner here last night. The host was friendly and welcome. Our waitress was great-she knew the menu well and helped us get some delicious drinks. I highly recommend the meatloaf. It was sooo good served with spinach and some really exceptional mashed potatoes. The chicken Caesar salad was also really good. I loved the brick walls and ambiance. Will definitely return. Thank you.
Very solid restaurant by the theater district. Burger was excellent and the service was great. A tad overpriced but that is fair considering its location. Definitely a new go to restaurant for me before a broadway show
The three of us had another phenomenal pre-theatre lunch at our favorite restaurant Joe Allen. Our server Wilson was very personable and attentive throughout our lunch. We really enjoyed our turkey sandwiches and salads, they were extremely tasty. But the best part of all, as always was the Nutella crêpes with ice cream that we had for dessert. They were out of this world !!!
I love this place. It's shabby as it should be. A go to theater hangout. We seem to always get the same things, a burger with potatoes, 1/2 chicken, and wine or beer. It's inexpensive by NYC standards. The waitstaff is always professional and pleasant. It's very convenient. If you are going pre or post theater, the manager will get you in and out to make sure you are not too early or too late. An old Reliable.
My family visited Joe Allen for a pre-show dinner last week. Service was fantastic. Food was great - especially like the guacamole and La Scala chopped salad (I could eat it every day!). I had read some reviews about the restaurant being cramped but compared to other places we ate at in NYC, it was plenty roomy!
Our server was entertaining and fabulous. The food was delicious! Thoroughly enjoyed our brunch.
Had a great pork chop, and my dinner companion raved about the liver and onions.
Wonderful experience. I had the croque madame and my husband had the steak frites. Both very tasty. The service from everyone we came in contact with was outstanding. We’ll be back in the area in a few days and considering going back.
This was the 1st time dining here. Flew up from San Antonio Texas to celebrate my 61st birthday and see the musical Moulin Rouge. Staff was friendly and fast and fun. This place is very popular, recommend doing reservations which I did. The food and my birthday cake was fantastic and our waiter even placed a lite candle on the hot fudge/ice cream cake. You can’t go wrong with this type of service. Will be back of course. Thanks again everyone
Noisy but wonderful. Food was excellent and our son, who is vegan, reported that his entree was delicious. A great choice in the theater district.
Our waiter was excellent. Great location right down the street from Richard Rogers Theater (Hamilton).
Joe Allen is one of my favorite places in the theater district to go eat before or after a show. The service is always solid. The food is always excellent and I'm always living a happy camper
A must visit for anyone loving the theatre. It's a restaurant for working actors, theater staff and fans. You never know who may show up.
Came in at 6 and had a show at 7. We told our server and she made sure we were taken care of and out by 6:40. The steak and fries is always quite enjoyable and is my recommendation. It is tradition to go here before a show, and I have never been disappointed. Will be returning before my next show.
Original food for those who l9ve aisan cooking. The Pork buns and Ginger or Chicken Ramen were lovely choices. We were a little rushed by our waiters which I didn't like as much. Try the take away bar outside. It's also a great option.
Huge fan of Joe Allen. Our Waitress was amazing, food was 10/10, cool vibe. This is on my list for many pre theatre visits to come. Go with the Martinis, tuna nicoise, steak frites and out of this world Banana Cream Pie.
What a great place! Highly recommend to everyone, but especially those in the area for a Broadway play. There’s pictures of actors/actresses and Broadway poster, really adds to the whole experience. The eggs Benedict was delightful, and the service was very nice and attentive. Will be back
This little place was fun. We were there from Alabama over the weekend and were running a little behind for our play so we knew we had to eat quickly. They accommodated us perfectly. We all had salads and drinks. Something light to get us through til dinner. They were fast and friendly and the food was delicious. The atmosphere felt special and very "New York."
This venerable dining establishment is my definition of what a perfect restaurant can be. The setting, the food, the bar and the professional wait staff make having a meal here a special evening. Joe Allen has been around for many years and I hope they continue to thrive for many more.
Always one of my favorite spots pre theater if I can find a seat at the bar. The bartenders are always friendly, even when busy, the food is always well prepared and the people watching is spectacular. Plus, I often end up in very interesting conversations with others at the bar. This evening I left a show early so there was no problem finding a seat at the bar, but still great service and a very yummy burger.
Favorite restaurant (and among my favorite places period) in NYC. Best atmosphere, reliably good food no matter what you order, wonderful service. A true New York institution in the theater district where actual New Yorkers hang out and where tourists are also welcome. If I lived in midtown I’d be there several times a week! The best.
We had an absolutely wonderful pre-show lunch with friends. The service was prompt, kind, and helpful - everyone we interacted with. We felt like we belonged there. Devin was our server (could be Devon, apologies for the guess ☺️) and could not have done a better job. He was attentive but gave our party the time we needed to talk (and ponder the menu). He was great with the two kids in our party and just extended the welcome we felt. The food was delicious and fortified us for the excitement to come. Both kids loved the Nutella crepes, and our food (omelette, chicken salad) were tasty and not too heavy. Thanks for a wonderful meal and experience. We will recommend y'all widely.
Loved it! Food was fabulous & served without delay! Staff was delightful! Make reservations for dinner. Usually not busy in the afternoon. Relaxing. Been here multiple times, this restaurant is consistently tasty, friendly, punctual for before a show, and reasonably priced. And dare I say the fries are even better than Five Guys!!
Great mid town meeting place. Same decor as in London UK. Food was much improved this recent visit and the service was excellent.
Went last night for the first time and the experience was amazing. The food was fantastic but every staff member we encountered were so attentive and friendly particularly our server Devon. Will definitely return.
All our food was delish! Best burger - juicy full of flavor and perfectly cooked Best French fries- perfect crispness Terrific service by TK- always attentive and patient with our large group and Celiac questions. Prompt service- perfect place to come before or after seeing a show. Cozy environment. Delicious food and a great value
We stopped in here after a show because everything else was closed on a Sunday night. This has a casual pub feeling with a cool broadway vibe. The service was friendly and very helpful with good recommendations. The drinks were well done and the presentation was thoughtful. The guacamole has a different spin on it but still had a good flavor. The steak and fries were good too. Over all it was a nice experience and had an affordable price point too.
One of the best restaurants we ate at while visiting New York. Hannah was our server and she was so good to us! We also ate some of the best food ever! I had the duck and it was fantastic. Somebody ate the steak and frites and that look really good. The place is quaint and you can dress up a little bit but it's not mandatory. We went here to eat just before seeing The musical moulin rouge which is at the AL hirschfield theater around the corner. If you get a chance to eat at Joe Allen, you should definitely give it a shot and ask for Hannah.
Love the food and atmosphere! Recommended from an older diner of a local restaurant, Juniors, once he showed me a pic of the Banana Cream pie I was interested, stopped by for lunch, had the burger that he recommended, one of the best burgers I’ve ever had, the beef was the best quality, fries were good , banana cream pie was worth waiting for , service was ok, although I could have used another drink during the meal , I really wanted to come back for dinner but didn’t have time , hope to in the future, thank you !
My daughter and I went here before seeing HadesTown. This is our first time to NYC. We both had the New York strip steak for our entree & the hot fudge cake for dessert. The whole meal was wonderful and our waiter was very attentive. The atmosphere is cozy and we loved the posters of Broadway flops on the walls. On our next trip to NYC we will definitely be back to dine at Joe Allen’s!
Wonderful place, especially if you're having dinner after a Broadway show. Everything reminds you of how much history there is. Good, fast, attentive service. Excellent food. Very cozy atmosphere.
Went before a show and they made sure we were out in plenty of time. Our waitress, Sara, was great - so nice and helpful with menu suggestions and had a great personality!
This is my new go to spot before or after seeing a Broadway show. The host asks if you are heading to a show after your reservation so you don't have to worry about rushing the waiter for the bill when you need to leave. The atmosphere is more low key and cool rather than touristy. Staff is incredibly friendly and efficient. Food and drinks were delicious- La Scala salad and the smashed chicken burger. The banana cream pie is AMAZING! Can't wait to return.
Food delicious. Steak cooked to perfection. If I could give 10 stars for service I would. Devon (hope I’ve spelled that correctly) looked after us wonderfully, great job. 👍👍👍
Dined here for the first time this past Thursday, after coming to NYC for over 30 years. Absolutely wonderful dining experience. Excellent service. Delicious food. Wonderful, classic NYC atmosphere. Enjoyed Escargot broiled in Garlic Butter and Pesto, the Meatloaf with Mashed Potatoes and Sautéed Spinach, with Banana Cream Pie for dessert!
Joe Allen was a perfect evening — full 5 stars! The food was outstanding: juicy steak, crispy hash browns, great Caesar salad, and the warm apple crisp dessert hit the spot. Service was top-notch — warm, professional, and attentive staff who made us feel right at home. Atmosphere is timeless and charming: classic theater-district tavern with red banquettes, celebrity photos, and that warm, old-school NYC vibe. Great spot for a reliable, delicious meal before or after a show. Highly recommend!
I was introduced to Joe Allen 15 years ago when I met my wife. She had been going with her uncle for decades previous. Most recently I had a great time listening to Bob's jokes. Thanks for making time for us Bob. Joe Allen is a special place. ❤️
Our first time here! I had dinner last night (1/7/26) after seeing a show. We were seated immediately by a very welcoming host or manager, who couldn’t have made us feel more at home. Our server, whose name I wish I remembered, a petite blonde woman, was honestly a dream. She was so kind, quick and funny, my husband and I agreed we wish she could have sat down and joined us. Our food barely hit the table before it was gone. I’ve never had chicken melt in my mouth the way the francese did here. And the banana pie? Holy crap. We will 100% be back to try more of the menu, as ex-restaurant employees, we have not been this impressed by an establishment in a very long time. Thank you so much!!!
I cannot express how phenomenal the food here is. I got the steak frites, it was cooked to perfection and absolutely delicious. My fiance got the half chicken and it truly was one of the most incredible things i have ever tasted. Every other bite we were saying how excellent everything was. Service was fast and friendly and we will 100% be back!!
I visited Joe Allen on Saturday, 11/15/2025 for an 8:30pm reservation, and it instantly became one of my favorite spots in Hell’s Kitchen. Earlier in the day I stopped in because I have several dietary restrictions and get anxious about ordering. The person managing the front of house that evening, Brian, went above and beyond. He printed the night’s specials, walked me through the menu, and helped me land on something that would work without making me feel like a problem. That extra care before I’d even sat down said a lot. When I returned for my reservation, the experience matched that first impression. The room has that classic New York feel – exposed brick, warm, dim lighting, and an easy buzz of conversation where you can still hear the person across from you. It feels casual and comfortable, but with a level of polish that makes it special. Our server gave us plenty of time to catch up before ordering, and once we were ready, he made the whole process feel simple and relaxed. I mentioned what Brian and I had discussed earlier and he understood immediately, took it in stride, and built the order around it with ease. Throughout the night, servers were constantly in motion in the best way — always nearby, checking in at the right moments, and genuinely making sure guests had what they needed. My guest even commented before I could that the service was “on it” all night. When I asked for a box at the end, the server quickly packed everything up neatly and handed it back without making me feel rushed or awkward. Small detail, but it matters. As someone with 10 years of restaurant experience, I really respect how smoothly the front and back of house operate here. The service is attentive without being overbearing, the atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the staff truly seem to care about giving people a good experience. HUGE Thank you to Brian, along with the staff working on 11/15/25. The night was relaxed, memorable, and the meal I ordered was one of the healthiest and most enjoyable I’ve had eating out. I’m already looking forward to going back. Highly recommend! If you’re looking for a gem of a restaurant in Hell’s Kitchen with service-driven hospitality, Joe Allen is most certainly one of them. Again, huge thanks to Brian and his team.
Each bite offers evidence of kitchen care while each interaction shows staff care. This place gives large amounts of delicious food. Outstanding service, clean surroundings, and attractive vibe. The workers gave my kids special treatment. A fully satisfying dining occasion!
Had a great time at Joe Allen with my family for my mom's birthday. I got smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Great vibes and service. I liked the menu and the ambience. They also got us out in time for our show. Thanks guys!
Such a wonderful experience. A good friend from London had recommended that I stop by to experience this place, and let's just say it did not disappoint. The ambience and food - and staff most of all - were amazing. Made my night. Don't hesitate to stop by this place. You won't be disappointed.
The wait and front of house staff were very accommodating and conscious of tables with show times. You would think that trying to get people in and out quickly because of this would mean that some part of the experience is compromised, but the service was impeccable and the food was absolutely delicious. Maybe the best salmon I’ve ever had, and I have thought about the hot fudge pudding cake every day since. All of this, plus the moody atmosphere makes Joe Allen the perfect place to come for your pre or post theater appetite. I will definitely be back!
Joe Allen is a fantastic spot! The food is absolutely delicious – everything we tried was cooked perfectly and full of flavor. The staff is super friendly and attentive, which made the experience even better. The place itself is really nice, with a cozy and stylish vibe. All in all, it’s a 5-star experience, and I can’t wait to come back!
When my wife booked this restaurant, I was thinking, well, that's not the place you go for the food but mostly for how close it is from theater and shows. I thought it would be okay because the atmosphere would make it for the food. I love food. I was wrong. The service was great, our waiter was awesome! The food was great too! The atmosphere is obviously great too! GREAT GREAT GREAT = GO GO GO!
We had a wonderful pre-theater dinner here, sitting at the bar which was the best seat in the house! The food was delicious. Ordered the roasted stuffed quail as well as the burger. Great flavor and presentation; friendly staff. Very strong drinks too! Will definitely come back here again.
Recommended from a friend back in the UK and it didn't disappoint. Delicious food and great cocktails. Would come back the next time we're in NYC without hesitation.
I did not take any pictures but the place has a quiet even though it is open concept. The service was excellent, our wait staff was very attentive. The food was good, I like the appetizers and dessert. We can buffalo chicken wings and Caesar salad. The entree I got is ok, my friend got the steak and frites and love it. I really like the dessert and lemon cheesecake and banana cream pie. Both were very satisfying. I would recommend this place after a broadway show as it is good food, atmosphere and close to transportation options.
I really enjoyed the atmosphere. Hint of Italian with American pub scene at the bar. The servers were wonderful and attentive to our requests. My meal was great. The Vegetarian Thai Stew was really good. The sauce is what made it. The guacamole was good. It was a bit tangy and had more cilantro than I'm use to. The 5th star would have come from having lemonade. I imagined a strawberry or another fruit combination, but alas it wasn't so. Another reason for no 5th star, is that the seating was really tight. Granted, it is Midtown Manhattan with many other establishments. In summary, if you have an opportunity to dine here, please do.
Wonderful conscientious service. Lovely staff kind friendly greeting by host.Food was good not exceptional. But the staff made the experience 5 stars. Nice atmosphere great for theatre dining before or after. Personally long time favorite.Always enjoyable.
Joe Allen is a New York institution, and it isn't uncommon to see Broadway actors eating here before or after shows. The first time I ate here a famous TV and stage actor walked in! The ambiance is fantastic with a step-down to enter and soft warm lights inside. Actor photos hang on the walls. Service is great and the food is served quickly. And it's delicious! I've had the steak fritas and meatloaf. The steak is excellent.
Positive points: nice and cozy inside, service was great, great for late dine / after Broadway show dinner etc. Bathroom was clean and ok. Negative point: food was for us a bit disappointing in taste. My husband ordered a salad - that was just ok. And I ordered a steak tartare. But it might have been that we ordered the wrong dishes. My tartare was ok in taste but not great, not memorable. the toast/bread that came together was My opinion not the right choice to eat with tartare. It was too hard, too thin, broke easily. It made difficult to eat the tartar. I’d serve it with a bit more bread and real bread. I ordered a dessert, which was not a good choice. Some type of chocolate cake covered with some industrialized chocolate caramel sauce and a vanilla ice cream. I didn’t like it-sorry. I wish they had the famous pecan pie but they didn’t have in the menu, it might be seasonal. It was for us a nice option for after show dine close to our hotel in Hell’s Kitchen. Overall I’d recommend for a after Broadway show. I’d also recommend to book online before. I wouldn’t come just for the gastronomic side.
Cozy atmosphere with good, not great, food. Absolutely nothing bad to say but also nothing outstanding or memorable. A solid choice if you are looking for somewhere to eat before a matinee. I tried their bloody mary, which is listed as an appetizer rather than a cocktail because of all the additions to it. It’s silly but I wanted to see what it looked like and the actual cocktail was tasty, also bacon was crispy and delicious. The La Scala salad was good. Comes with the dressing on the side and is served with mixing spoons which made it very easy to dress. The dressing is very thick and listed as creamy Italian vinaigrette. It was very tangy but worked well with the salad. Smoked salmon and scrambled eggs are a solid choice if you like salmon.
Lovely place, service was fantastic (our server was amazing!) and the atmosphere post show was great. They checked before our reservation whether we were coming after a show, which I thought was a nice touch. My only niggle was lack of choice for myself on the menu. OH chose steak but I just wanted something light as it was nearly 10pm so ended up with a salad...which was OK but pricy for what it was. Small bites would have been appreciated.
Made a reservation but before 530 it seems pretty easy to grab a table. Service was great, very friendly and accommodating. The food was average. I guess you dont really go for the food but still a little disappointing. Had a steak, under cooked and little taste. Ceaser salad was good and very authentic dressing (must like anchovies). I got the dressing on the side and good thing. There was probably a cup and a half of it.
The food was just okay. The service and atmosphere were wonderful, though.
Sadly the food quality has slipped. We had escargot, crab cakes and fries. Both appetizers had a very odd flavor profile. I will not order either again, and will likely not return unless I want a burger. Very sad.
I had the pan roasted wild stripe bass that comes with cauliflower served on the side ($40). The bass came with a saffron-white wine sauce served on top, I enjoyed the bass and cauliflower very much. Another time there I had the Yankee Pot Roast ($30) which was okay. On another occasion I tried their grilled free-range half chicken with mashed potatoes ($33), which had virtually no taste. Their pan seared trout ($38) was dry and had little taste on the day I tried it. The main dining room is on the left hand side when you enter the restaurant. It is out of easy view from the room you enter. The main dining room is the more attractive of the two rooms. It has nicely framed Broadway show advertisements from the past on the walls. The restaurant is very popular, so it is best to make a reservation at dinner time. I was a walk-in many times at about 7:00 p.m, which is after most Broadway shows have started. The restaurant has a low ceiling which explains my medium level noise rating. I have included two pictures of the main dining room and one picture taken from the other room peeking into the main dining room. This restaurant is on 46th Street between 8th and 9th Avenues.
I came to this restaurant in early December for dinner before a show on Broadway with seven other people. I made the reservation by calling the restaurant a week in advance which is when it was made available to book. The restaurant is was pretty crowded and I can’t say if they accepted walk-ins. For those who do not know, Joe Allen is a New York institution for many who have dinner prior to seeing a show on Broadway. With that said, the restaurant is very mindful of when customers need to leave in time to get to the theater in their neighborhood. The food here is fine. The menu is pretty basic and there are not a lot of pure vegetarian entrees. The restaurant is very old school atmosphere and a little cramped, but not crazy compact by New York City standards. The staff and servers at the restaurant were all very nice. I probably would not seek out my own reservation at this restaurant but I would not object if someone else wanted to dine here.
Terrible food, wish I could say it was even edible, I took one bite and was done. Wasn’t even asked if everything was ok with the meal. Not worth it.
My sister and I went after a show and were surprised that it wasn't too busy. The atmosphere is your standard restaurant but with some fun theater decor. The food was mediocre, and the service was pretty nonexistent. Our server told us they do an informal service. We asked what that meant, and he said they won't pour water or wine. This was not a huge deal, but any time we needed anything (like plates or silverware), we also had to grab his attention since he did not come by without us asking. We ordered the La Scala salad, the grilled shrimp, and the Cajun sausage dish. I love the original La Scala salad, so maybe my expectations were too high; but this version was made with low-quality ingredients, a "vinaigrette" that was thick and tasted like it had aspartame in it, and it was missing the tang that the original has from the Dijon mustard. The other dishes were fine but nothing great.
The food was fine, but take a look at the bathrooms and you will run lik a bat out of hell and never go back.
We showed up for dinner service with a party of five. Upon arrival we were asked if we had a reservation. When we responded “no” the shocked hostess inquired arrogantly again with “you don’t have a reservation for FIVE people?” We found this hilarious because it was 5:30pm on a Friday and the restaurant was largely empty. We sat down and were handed poorly folded paper menus which were a limited menu. Apparently they didn’t have gas service and were unable to provide various foods at various temperatures as they essentially were cooking off George Forman Gills equivalents. The white paper table covers seriously upped the level of sophistication, providing that homey “Macaroni Grill feel”. When dinner was served, it was interesting. The lobster roll was served on a toasted hot dog roll that was probably picked up from a local chain grocery. When our party of 5 left at about 6:30, the restaurant still didn’t have a wait, and many tables remained open. Although our server was kind and attentive, we can understand from the rest of our experience and the uptight hostess why reservations may not really be required for this lackluster restaurant.
I've had people tell me this is the best burger in town, so I'm not sure if I've just been here on bad days twice, but I cannot recommend it at all. Both times I received a pretty flavorless burger on a bun that seemed to be falling apart. Nevermind the fact that it's rather pricy. That said, the interior is beautiful and it wasn't too loud so, aside from the food, it was a good experience.
Firstly, I don’t understand the restaurant’s reservation policy. Weird, especially if you have a bigger party. Wouldn’t you want to know ahead of time the size of the party? Secondly, I called the restaurant eight days prior to our initial dinner. The maitre d I talked to, had an uncooperative attitude (ultra snotty) . Since it was eight days to our dinner, I was told I had to call the following day. He refused to make my reservation. I “can “ except the policy, but will not except the tone
