Love it in the summer with doors wide open , comfortable seats, considerate crowd.
Fantastic coffee and baked goods! Very friendly staffs.
They have pretty decent coffee and a interesting matcha scone! The staff is always friendly and courteous regardless of how busy the place it.
Excellent coffee. Great place to get work done if you're trying to avoid the distraction of the internet (they don't seem to have free wi-fi, which I preferred in this instance). Baristas are attitude-free and very friendly. Shop is immaculately clean.
Always good coffee and food. I love it because it's a very quiet atmosphere to get away from the bustle nearby.
Awesome coffee. They rotate roasters. Friendly and very knowledgeable barista. Nice decor. Love the place! One of my favorites.
Cute, cute. International crowd. Really liked the food selections (Fresh!) and the friendly, genuine service. The iced coffee was right. Plan to return soon.
More like Feng Shui Café... nice minimalist interior and a large communal table to take a corner to chat or read over a solid quality brew. Studying or work may be difficult with only 1 hr of free WiFi, but who needs that when you’ve got large and shaded street windows
Wonderful. Using excellent coffee( Parlor coffee - Nice local Roastery). All Confections are high end. (Cold pressed juices, Smart water.) What an impressive place. Thnx warm staffs~~~
It is so difficult to find a good matcha in midtown, let alone New York, but the one at Pennylane is great. I work one block away and this is my go-to place.
This cafe was super cozy. I loved their matcha cookie with white chocolate. Super fun experience and lovely service.
Pennylane coffee is a worldly coffee experience, appropriately located near the UN. Serves stump town beans in a clean, modern and chic environment. Highly recommend if you are in the neighborhood!
A little jewel of perfection close to the UN...prob the best cappuccino I've had in NYC...the classical music is a nice touch to unwind for a few min as you watch the diplomats go by...
Nice staff, attractive clean minimalist space and reasonable prices. Coffee was excellent - can't go wrong with stump town. Will be back!
Lovely local coffee house, ideal if you are going to the UN for a visit!
Friendly staff, Bring great quality coffee consistently, open & cozy settings. A good place to bring guests after lunch.
Very delicious coffee ☕
Lovely little coffee shop. Delicious pastries, quiet atmosphere. Perfect morning bite and go.
Good selection of coffee and espresso, very friendly staff. A regular diplomats and UN staff hang-out spot.
Awesome americano and avocado toasts. The croissants are from La Cabra and were also really good.
Love the coffee and the cakes. Love the staff (Michael you are the best). Nice atmosphere too...
Cool placer, Great coffee, specially if you like them a bit acid and with a bitter and exotic taste.
Best cappuccino in the neighborhood. Lovely baristas!! The ham and cheese sandwich is divine.
Perfect cold brew and the matcha scone was great.
Everything is great! My favorite coffee in NY, they make perfect Cortado. However, you need to consider changing your strawberry supplier it tastes like fake strawberry and most of my friends say the same.
Best coffee shop in the area. Quite a bit of seating, lots of very delicious pastries, coffee’s good, and service is super friendly. The vibe of the place is quite nice as well, trendy and modern but tasteful—and it’s super clean too. Highly recommend!!
Packed with customers even on a Friday morning! I enjoyed the dim atmosphere with meditative background music almost put me to sleep. The staff was friendly and efficient, lets you adjust your creamer. Spacious calm interior that lets you remove yourself from the chaos streets of nyc. They have La Cabra’s baked goods!
The BEC was incredible, but a little hard to eat in such soft bread. It almost fell apart. I would have preferred a tougher bread like sourdough. Excellent, attentive service. Place was very clean despite so many customers.
Very cool vibe, full of UNers. The coffee is above average, and the space is great to meet, work, and just hang out. Worth the short walk from Grand Central.
Low key, no frills cafe with a modern vibe and delicious drinks. Most seating is for 1-2 people so large groups may have trouble finding a seat.
LOVE this new spot. Great friendly service and delicious coffee. I came in and really wanted just eggs and bacon - they hooked me up by combining their side orders onto one plate 'to-go' and it was beautiful and SO YUM. I pretty much go here everyday now :) One day I'm going to try their pastries and breads - they always look so moist and decadent. Take a client or a friend here, great atmosphere. Only one thing I would change- please get some UNSWEETENED Almond milk!!! Otherwise, 5 Stars!
Unassuming cafe near scaffoldings. Rich and flavorful chai latte is the best in mid-town. Service always quick and fuss free. Matcha scone is quite special and perfect pairing with tea. Everything’s expensive here though.
it was a horrible hot day when i drove over 1,5 hours to Manhattan! it also turned out that the agency I was going to was closed since 2020! But on the maps, it seems to be working fine! I was very ANGRY! Stopped ta the first cafe on the way, and these guys were able to resuscitate me! Desserts and coffee at 5 star! Than u guys ! u a BEST!
Very cute spot for serious coffee. Unlike many others these guys are not roasters, instead they serve the best roasters around. They change the coffee they are serving once every day or so. Plus they also have dandelion chocolates from San Francisco, love them.
One of the best coffee shops in NYC, and they serve La Cabra and Balthazar pastries.
Just discovered today. Very cool and nice atmosphere. Hope I can get a seat outside again!
Cute minimalist cafe. Nice and quiet on a Saturday morning around 10am. Coffee was great. Service was on point. The chocolate chip cookie was to die for!
I found this place while I was visiting UN. such a nice place! cozy atmosphere and awesome coffee.
Love this welcoming cafe so much..! Great spot to chill, work, and grab either a meal or snacks. Highly recommend their matcha scone. ✨🍵I would say matcha scone is the must-go item here. Housebaked! Rich, moist, crumble inside with a beautiful crunchy edge outside. 🍪Chocolate chip cookie, also housebaked, was also delicious as well. Not a best but good enough when you need one. Turmeric latte was great. It was creamy with a balanced flavor. I personally don’t like ginger taste (I eat only for health) but their latte was right on the spot with the gentle smell and the mild spicy taste in milk.
Really lovely coffee shop. Excellent service, excellent espresso-based drinks, excellent food. I had an oat milk latte, breakfast burrito (really good, very fresh, and larger/more substantial than expected), matcha scone. In a city full of coffee shops, this one is a gem.
Top notch coffee spot. Indoor seating and bar seats available with a communal table and a few high tops. Specialty coffee, tea, pastries and a decent breakfast/lunch menu. Simple black and white walls separate the open seating area for working and conversation, and a bar with a La Marzocco Strada slinging delicious espresso drinks and other beverage of your choice. A warm light and Edison style light bulbs give the space a subdued industrial chic vibe. Water splashes as the cars race by on a rainy day such as this, the lofi interiors, the warm lights and the classical music emit a sense of comfort. Away from the miserable early cold of the year, I cherish this sense of calmness amid intermate conversation and the ceaseless traffic, which is a rare gem, anywhere you go. Serving Hearts at the time of my visit.
Been going here for years and have loved everything I have tried! The coffee, pastries, sandwiches and bowls/salads never miss.
Killer spot to hide away in midtown. Great food & coffee and an even better spot to relax for a quick stop and do some work. They’ve been at this location quite some time and it clearly shows (in the best way !!). I’ll definitely be back.
definitely deserves a better rating, the Place is so cozy and actually super calming! We had the burrito and the bacon egg cheese avocado roll and both were delicious as well as our iced coffees with coconut milk. Please also try the overnight oats they were super yum. Also the owner was super cute and very friendly. We will come back :)
I had such a wonderful experience at Pennylane Coffee! The atmosphere was incredibly warm and inviting, making me feel right at home the moment I walked in. The barista was friendly and welcoming, which added to the overall positive vibe of the café. I had an Americano and a matcha scone, both of which were absolutely delicious! Highly recommend this place if you're looking for great coffee and a cozy spot to relax.
probably, the best coffee in new york. . if youre lucky, some classical music in the background will be playing. or other well curated tunes. it was perfect for my morning with a book. I loved the atmosphere and design. they are also laptop friendly and have a big common table for the wfh/students. the owner is so friendly, and they have some yummy-healthy dishes too!
This place makes the best mocha - flavourful of both coffee and cocoa despite being not sweet. The price is high but the atmosphere makes up for it, as the Cafe welcomes you with grand classical music most of the times. The service is quite fast and there is a point collection card in which you can get your 10th cup for free. I like their housemade matcha scone but wouldn't recommend its matcha latte because the taste of the matcha is too mild. The place is always very busy during 2.30 - 3.00 PM, which is towards the end of the UN lunch break. I recommend going at other times if you can. Otherwise, you will have to wait in a fairly long line and there won't be a place to sit.
Pennylane is located close to Grand Central and the United Nations. It is often teaming with people from all over the world, as there are many Permanent Rep Offices of various countries at the United Nations located close by. The coffee is very good. And the food seems fresh. The cakes and bakes are good. If you re in this part of Manhattan, I think this would be the best coffee shop.
Good coffee. Baked goods are excellent. One star off because it's overpriced.
Coffee is OK, been here a few times and it's always left a bitter after taste. I do like the atmosphere though, and when you can get a seat it's nice. Expensive for what it is really.
Pretty sparsely decorated, but attractive. Good selection of obscure Japanese beer. however. It’s a coffee shop. And if you’re here for coffee. You won’t be disappointed.
Good food. Good flat white and matcha latte. Expensive though.
Good service, cool place, OK coffee, was expecting it to be a lot better given the reviews, rotten avocado 🥲
Good coffee, good place to get some work done or have a quick meeting. Super busy around lunch but quiet in the afternoon.
Stopped in here a few times when I’ve been working/staying nearby. They have a great selection of coffee and snacks and are a great alternative to nearby coffee chains. I’ve had to get takeout most times I’ve been as I can never find a seat or table - can get fairly busy and it could use the space better.
Good coffee, unfortunately not enaugh tables. Just one communal table. I didn't try the food yet, but the menu looks nice for a "to go" coffee shop. Pastries, sandwiches and healthy salads. They even have a couple of gluten free options (one extra star for that!).
Great coffee, although not exceptional. The general ambience hasn't quite been perfected, yet. Is it a hipster vibe, is it contemporary Scandinavian? One is left guessing. The absence of hot food at the weekend is moderately disappointing, although quite understandable, in my view.
Awesome mocha. Food selection fairly small, but tasty. Internet only works for one hour per day per computer, which is a bummer (in my case, since I work from coffee shops often, this is a deal breaker). Worth a try.
Great area and relaxed easy service but mocha without any chocolate and salad quite bitter!
Decent coffee. Seems to be very busy, chairs are a hot commodity but I managed to get one immediately. All coffee is in a to go cup. It's smooth but not extremely flavourful. But still a decent coffee and a decent place.
Pennylane Coffee - Quality Brews in Midtown Located conveniently near the United Nations on East 45th Street, Pennylane Coffee has quickly become a cozy go-to spot for coffee lovers and neighborhood regulars. The café offers a selection of well-made espresso drinks and freshly brewed coffee that has a smooth, balanced flavor. Their menu includes a small but thoughtful range of pastries, sourced from New York’s favorite bakeries like Bien Cuit, which complement the coffee nicely. The ambiance is inviting and comfortable, although the minimalist interior may feel a bit simple for some. Pennylane’s unique touch lies in its rotating philosophical quotes on display, which add a bit of character to the otherwise straightforward space. If you’re looking for a clean, welcoming café with dependable coffee in Midtown, Pennylane Coffee is definitely worth a visit for a solid coffee break
Pleasant surprise. Basic space, very long, with minimal design. Lighting is warm. Dark wood. The drip coffee has potential, as the blend (Heart) had high traceability, and integrated Ethiopian and Honduras beans. It sadly disappointed as the coffee was watery: they didn’t get the coffee to water ratio right in brewing it, which gives the beans a huge disservice. Great vibe, actually, a bit surprising. Huge selection of coffee table books stood out, as did a variety of seating options (book corner, long table, high table, bench, etc). Coffee score: 3/5. Everything else score: 4.25/5. Overall experience: 4/5.
Pretty good food (healthy line) and average coffee/cappuccino for above average prices. Expensive.
Good coffee, but no nice atmosphere (somehow resembles a parking garage). In summer almost no AC. Very few tables. I prefer other cafes nearby to enjoy a cappuccino. But plus: You can always meet UN colleagues.
The coffee was really bad, in a large latte I could taste maybe 1 shot. The service was friendly but seemed rushed and I think they probably made a mistake because of it.
The baked display was full of flies. Pretty gross
Been here on a Sunday, coffee beans are good quality but the extraction was clearly wrong, probably grind was too coarse. No food was available and tables were dirty. Asked for a espresso and was served in one way paper cups instead of being asked if was here or to go - and as it was for "here", I rather have ceramic reusable espresso cup.
Bacon egg and cheese had 1 small piece of bacon, a whole bunch of brown/black avocado and cost 16 dollars. Terrible.
They’ll charge you $4.75 for a flat white and then give you one that was made by accident and has been sitting on the counter for the last two minutes. That would never happen at Little Collins or Black Fox.
Me and my partner (2 black women) walked in and the Asian man who was working behind the counter was having a personal conversation with a customer. Instead of helping us he continued his conversation with the customer and ignored us. We are customers too. We just stood there until finally a latino man came out and took our order. After we got our drinks, a white man walks in and the Asian man working stops talking to the customer he was having a personal conversation with and helps the white man. Why didn't he help us when we walked in? I guess two black women aren't considered customers to him. But a white man is considered a customer and will be helped immediately. I used to like this place when I worked at the UN a few years ago. I never had a bad experience and I used to come here religiously. The customer service has gone downhill. I don't support racism or discrimination based on customers skin color.
