Great German style restaurant. We have been going to Pumpernickels for more than 30 years. Would not change a thing. There is plenty of room for large families in the back room.

Has been a long time staple in the Northport community. Always a comfy environment and friendly service. Great place to have an event or come with friends and family for a good meal, or just stop in for a drink or 3. Great central location.

This is truly an eating experience I've had almost everything on the menu here and everything I have tried was phenomenal. From the true German attire to the giant glasses of Beer if you want German food on the North shore of Long Island this is THE place to go...I go every year for my birthday and will continue to do so.

C

The best German food on Long Island. Decor hasnt changed since 1970 but the Sauer Brauten and Prime Rib Special remain astounding and the comfort vibe and waitresses in traditional German garb is great.

A Northport institution. Quiet and comfortable, with tables fairly far apart, which allowed for quiet conversation. We had the most charming and accommodating server, Marlene, who has been there for 49 years. The Sauerbraten was delicious, as was the apple strudel.

Very cozy place with great food and drinks. The red cabbage and pumpernickel bread were nice additions to our bratwurst and knockwurst plates. Service was fast and friendly. We'll definitely be returning.

Excellent authentic German fare! My wife and I were warmly greeted by owner Artie Glad and served by Lisa, one of Pumpernickel's efficient & friendly servers appropriately dressed in their dirndl/lederhosen attire. Once we tasted their delicious fresh baked pumpernickel bread, we could hardly wait to dig in to our meals! We devoured generous servings of sauteed Weinerschnitzel bratkartoffeln with sauteed mushrooms and Sauerbraten with potato dumplings and gravy. We both shared delicious sides of red cabbage and sliced carrots. To top it off, I had a Pilsner glass of Spaten draft Oktoberfest beer ... yummy!😋 We'll be going back to Pumpernickel's real soon!

Thank you so much for taking me back when I was 5-8 years old (63 now), when we went to dust The Whitehorse bar/ restaurant in Centereach...... sauerbraten as I remember Mr. & Mrs. Mueller made. So flavorful, and tender. Our waitress was absolutely professional, and courteous, but not to the point of being an annoyance. I will be back, again, and again until I have sampled your entire menu. Again, thank you for an impressive dinning experience. Robert T. Oliver

Haven't been there in 20 years after moving to NC. Was in NY and couldn't resist having dinner there with family. Everyone raved about the food & service. It was exceptional! Still the same owner who was gracious to come to our table and acknowledge our presence & bought us a round of after dinner drinks. Again, exceptional!

A restaurant thankfully from the good ole days.. German food served by Germans who speak the language and explain the menu to you. Incredible food great service. This kind of place is rare to find these days. The staff takes great pride in the restaurant and food. Probably the best red cabbage I've ever had. If you miss the old world, stop in. You will feel better.

Food was delicious, service was absolutely fantastic. I had never been there before, & am now a big fan. I've missed going to a really good German Restaurant, & this is one of 2 great German Restaurants I've finally found & enjoyed. I'm spoiled because I'm originally from Brooklyn, & went to only the best German Restaurants in Queens. I highly recommend Pumpernickel's in Northport.

The owner, Artie, the cooks, waitresses and bartender Denise are fabulous. They all seem to have a passion for being a part of Pumpernickels' hospitality history. A very enjoyable place to get a hearty meal, or enjoy some beers with friends. It hasn't changed in years, but that's one of the best things about Pumpernickel's! I've gotten the sauerbraten many times here, and it's always great! Classic German beers on tap. Great clientele. Staff is friendly and helpful always. Will go again!

Was craving a hearty meal potatoes and gravy so we decided to stop here for dinner. For appetizers we had the clams casino that had so much flavor! For dinner we ordered the famous sauerbraten with mashed potatoes and red cabbage my husband ordered pork schnitzel! Sauerbraten was so tender and the gravy was spot on! We cleaned our plates. For dessert we had the Black Forest cake which was the perfect ending! The atmosphere was great loved how all the waitresses wore cute German Dresses. We kept saying we felt like we were out of state! Live piano player and singer. Overall we will be back again!!

Artie the owner is a bin vivant, greets every customer warmly and enjoys every minute in his place. It shows through the service, the food and the atmosphere of the place. The waitresses are wonderful - mine read the menu for me and translated the dish names (which are in German) and explained each dish. I asked for something that wasn't quite on the menu, and she said she would figure it out. I had the beef rouladen and she brought a side of mushrooms, which went perfectly with the roulade sauce. The desserts are good, the bathrooms upstairs (something to note if you have trouble with stairs), but overall - it's a great restaurant.

My partner and I have been eating here for 20 years and we always feel welcomed and full. Dashka our server is always attentive and remembers our order. This German restaurant was a bit out of the way but just what I needed on a rainy Saturday afternoon. The combo lunch included soup, dessert and coffee with an entrée and is a phenomenal deal. The wiener schnitzel was divine, the rice beautifully cooked. The interiors were a restrained Bavarian and the service was impeccable. This is not Figlmüller's but I was blissfully unaware. So Northport isn't Vienna. Who cares? Mahlzeit!

Kevin Smith

In an empty German restaurant on a rainy Saturday afternoon, the expert service of the German speaking waitress in her dirndl recharged my soul. The food was delicious, the decor was Bavarian (natürlich), the television and music were straight Mel Brooks, and the food was worth a return trip. My detail suggested this restaurant as a treat after not dining on German food for nearly three years. It is NOT Figlmüller's but I am definitely going to reserve it for our delegates this coming weekend. It made a humdrum trip exciting. Danke für seine Gemütlichkeit. Mahlzeit!

Kevin Smith

The food and menu are excellent, the waitress is expert and German-speaking. The food is not just German (mainly German) but continental. The interior is great, the upstairs bathrooms and phone cabinet are classic and there is an ample parking lot. This was out of the way for me but my detail thought I would enjoy this. On a rainy Saturday afternoon in an empty German restaurant my soul was refilled. The waitress was joy personified. Dance. Mahlzeit!

Authentic German food on Long Island. Menu is both German and English language. A bit pricey. Read your receipt to make sure that you are charged correctly - I mention that because I was charged incorrectly and only noticed it after I got home.

Quite a good enough restaurant. We liked it.Nothing to be really excited about, but overall everything is good.

Tried sauerbraten for the first time at Pumpernickels and while it was okay and the portion was plenty it was not sour at all. It tasted like regular pot roast with extremely dark gravy. I have had sauerbraten in all the places I could find it over many years and make it myself. Everyone makes it different and I'm still searching for something similar to what I'm used to. A couple have come close but I guess it's just a tall order.

M
Mackenzie Hudson

The service was a little slow but very friendly. The food was excellent overall and nothing tasted like it had been pre made or frozen. Don't let the decor fool you, this is every bit as good as the restaurants by the harbor

A
Alan Seymour

Good food and great beer. Have to take away a star for the slow service. The afternoon I went there was only one waitress and she was overwhelmed , not her fault just too many people for one server.

M
Mike Menn

Nice atmosphere and service. Wish the food was a little better. Too much sauce/gravy covered main course.

S
Shannon Sha

Really fun German restaurant. The servers are friendly and attentive. My husband ordered the head cheese, which he enjoyed. I ordered the beef rouladine (something like that), and I really liked the pickles and onions. The meat was a little dry. My husband got the wienerschnitzel, was good but a little oily. Would definitely come here again.

J
Jaclyn T

Cozy atmosphere. Waitstaff in dirndls is a bit hokey but it works. Food was good, variety of German brats and schnitzel, albeit expensive. Waitress could not answer any questions about ingredients in the desserts because "they are all just delivered." Bathroom is up a flight of stairs (15 steps), would be a challenge for someone with mobility issues.

E
Elizabeth Turk

Food was ok, but lacking in selection compared to other german restaurants on the island. Tables are small, a table of 4 will run out of room quickly. Portions are generous and the servers are nice.

R
Roy Seher

Pumpernickel's is an excellent restaurant specializing in German comfort food. However they do have a broad seafood menu ( try the Orange Roughly or Bay Scallops) both very good. The wait staff is friendly and professional. The owners are usually there making sure all is well. The German food is a real treat. We were there on Saturday December 9 with a light snow falling. Generous cocktails and rich comfort food made for and excellent relaxed evening. If you want to stop by for just a drink there is a friendly popular bar. March 2025 had an excellent Orange Roughy Mediterranean, my wife had Goulash with a small size noodles. Again an excellent comfortable dinner.

J

Don't order the pig knuckles. Evry thong else was great.

B

The restaurant is small but clean. The food was really good. The wait staff was very good, very friendly. The host, I think Artie is his name, was horrible. We were a few minutes late for our reservation due to traffic. He was upset that we were late, stating he couldn't give us table # something, but could give us one of two others. At this point, only 3 or 4 tables had other customers. Since we didn't know we had a specific table to begin with, we didn't care. The rest of the restaurant didn't start filling up until halfway into our time there. And when we left, the table next to us was still empty. We were quite taken aback by this man's rudeness and attitude, since he is greeting people and we are paying customers. Once we got over our shock and anger, we had a good evening with good food.

Some pretty good stuff that is not typical. Avocado Fries like how do they do that! Served with the perfect sauce. Huge size portions. Wonderful desserts, extremely friendly service. Can be a bit pricey, however, again nice size portions.

Nice place food much improved over when i went last Cant wait to get back Yes it looks like a locals only bar type place way better than that been there since 1973 and looks it But more importantly doesn't taste it modern that way Also way clean and the bartender, kevin knew people name and treaded people great

Great authentic German food. If you go with a large group, be pr pared to wait, it takes a while to get your food. Iit's well worth the wait if you would like a nice hearty meal!

B

Agree with other reviews that the quality of the food has gone down while the prices have skyrocketed. At least the beer is still cold and tasty.

P
Paul Neubeck

Food is good. They must work harder on the vegetables. Only boiled horse carrots available with no sauce! For the price must be glased carrots.if they need a recepie i can provide. Also offer something for the kids like corn. Make a great creamed spinach. I do at home so can they. Dont run out of mashed potatoes. Offer a tap domestic beer like bud regular, we all dont appreciate craft. We would come much more if they would listen!

D
Drew DiDomenico

Expensive fried traditional German food. Pretty tasteless compared to Italian in my opinion. The best thing on the menu is the colossal pretzel but expect to pay 15 bucks for it. Filet mignon dish is a 42 dollar let down, a peice of meat sided with fried French fries with, no garnish or dress up on the plate. A total no frills meal at top dollar. However, the tiramisu for desert is made with cream, and that went down fast, the expresso was good too. All in all I won't be back.

G
Greg Barry

If you are Gluten-free, stay away... The service was not great (not bad, just slow), the German food was good but the saurbraten was overcooked and dry but tasty. Others enjoyed their meals. Bad wines. Good beer. They checked on a dish for gluten-free and said it was fine...they didn't think about the thin layer of gravy underneath and by the time it was discovered, it was too late. Owner wasn't very concerned and didn't comp the dish. Overall, would not return but if you are in the area and want German food, go.

D
Dor Bass

Very very basic food, maybe ok as a local restaurant just to grab a bite but definitely don’t go out of your way to eat here. The reviews are much better than reality.

A
Anthony Scavuzzo

I wish it didn't have to write a bad review for iconic place but the Sauer bratenwas tough and dry should have sent it back but didn't and actually the pork chops were good on a better note

We had a large group and I inquired about things ahead of time. The servers and the kitchen seem to have been overwhelmed. The food was good. Maybe too much attention to the locals/ regulars ?

W

Expensive NY Sirloin way undercooked, mashed potatoes were bland. Waitress knocked our roll basket to the floor and never replaced them it even asked if we wanted more. Very disappointed and we will not be returning.

Decide to try this place out since I have heard a lot of good things. Unfortunately it was not there. We got seated very quickly, we were looking at the menu and the waitress greeted us and ran off which was fine. After a while we were getting annoyed watching the waitress walking back and forth past us. We were about to leave when she came up to us and asked us if we wanted any drinks from the bar, we than asked what do you have? She said "I don't know. So we just got soda, but before we could get a drink for our baby she left and was gone for a couple minutes. When she came back I was like can I get something for the baby and she did. After that she was once again running past our table again. About 10 minutes past and she asks if we know what we want to eat and we said yes. We place our order and again about to run off before getting the babies order. We sitting there seeing a few other people come in and place their orders and we think nothing of it, but as the time goes by we notice that they are getting there food quickly unlike us. One of the seats has the same waitress as us and she is on them non stop. Now I'm getting annoyed. On top of that the baby is starting to acted out and I'm trying to keep him quiet while waiting for his food. Usually the first food brought would be the babies but when the food came out his was last. When we started eating the food and were not impressed. The meat was dry and the sauce seemed watery. We have eaten authentic german food before and this didn't taste like it.

C
Chris Albanese

I feel like this place must have been good at some point, but it really isn’t anymore. The decor is very dated, the service is poor, and the food is fairly bland. My wife got the salmon and it was definitely frozen and some point, and had no flavor. The sauerbraten was ok. But should have been better - it’s a German restaurant. Beers were just ok. This place is a miss in my book. I doubt I’ll be back.

G
Gil Muirhead

Me and my family had many a good meal here but were very disappointed last time we were there. I totally understand having to raise your prices OR cut your portion size in order to profit and keep up with the cost of things right now but doing both is not acceptable. The meals were skimpy at best and he prices all up. I mean did the price of egg noodles really go up that much that they could only afford to barely give you a cup of noodles. Very disappointing experience

O
Owen MacDevitt

My service was great but the food tasted very old and expired. Also, the decor seemed a little dated, like I was in the 90s again lol

J
Joan Scappaticci

Food was awful-the red cabbage was disgusting-even another couple who were served before us said the same thing-the gravy tasted like canned the mashed potatoes looked puréed-I’ve eaten Good German food - I was surprised that this restaurant has lasted

L
Lynn Fornuff

We went there late yesterday afternoon for an early dinner. The hostess was warm and friendly, but she was the only good part of our experience. Our waitress, while not rude, was far from friendly and welcoming. She acted like she was doing us a huge favor to serve us. Considering the prices on the menu, one would think her attitude would be a lot more gracious. My Dad ordered the sauerbraten, I ordered the wiener schnitzel. Everything is al acarte. No salad , just a very average bread basket comes with the meal. Dad's sauerbraten was very disappointing, particularly for a "German" restaurant. My veal was actually very good, what there was of it. The portion was VERY small. Equally small were the portions of cold mashed potatoes and carrots. Think Tapas. We ordered no drinks, appetizers, desserts, or coffee. Our bill was still over $50.00. When I leave a restaurant I typically take some of my meal home. I ate my entire meal and was still hungry when we left. I never go back to any restaurant if I've left there hungry.

J
Joanne Cossentino

Was there for lunch on a Tuesday back on the beginning of August. Whenever I have work in that area, i would stop by for lunch. On this last visit, the restaurant was empty. with the exception of one family of three and me and my friend. The service is normally slow. but on this day it was ridiculously slow. I was looking forward to their bread basket and their wonderful pumpernickel raisin bread from a local bakery off Main St by the harbor. It came to the table, hard and still cold, obviously straight from the freezer. I decided to try their potato pancakes with apple sauce, and my boyfriend offered a monte crisco sandwich. Three pancakes looked like the inner sole of shoes, and zero taste. I can't remember ever sending back a dish, but told the one and only person serving that day, that the dish wasn't edible. My boyfriend, who normally has a great appetite only ate half a sandwich. i decided to order their apple strudel al la mode. Again frozen, mushy and not edible. it's a shame because I actually liked this restaurant in the day, but after the experience we had that day, I can honestly see why it was empty, looked like they were on the verge of closing their doors! .

C
Connor Graham

Update: something has changed (ownership/management) The food is not nearly as good as it used to be. My schnitzel was literally microwaved. The table carrots were mushed to the point of baby food. Even the French onion soup tasted watered down. Everything was far more bland than it used to be. Not okay. Will not return after years of visiting.

J
Josh Williams

First and last time ever going to this restaurant. I was here for a catered event and while the food was delicious, the service was horrible. No menus were provided to the table; the waitress just walked over and listed 4 or 5 different choices. I'll be honest - I'm not familiar with German food and didn't know what any of it was. When I didn't answer right away, she yelled (loud enough for the entire party to hear) that if I didn't order that instant, I wouldn't be able to order for the rest of the event. Another person at the table ordered a second of their dish for me, and it ended up being really good. But I can't justify ever coming back due to the service.

B
Bernadette Lisske

We have gone to Pumpernickels for 40 years…last months visit was not good…. Today we wanted to try again….it was worse than last time. Today Saturday we arrived at 3:30 to an empty dining room. The table did not have the usual cloth napkins. The waitress came over and took our drink order….We placed our food order… we were sharing a shrimp cocktail…4 hard dried out shrimp… no lemon… tasteless cocktail sauce. We placed our order…one sauerbraten and one Weiner schnitzel… Twenty minutes later…no food yet…..we got up… asked for bill for the shrimp cocktail and drinks…paid and left… NEVER will go back.

So bad - it used to be amazing but the “waitress” who was more like a lot Lizzard paid me no mind no realizing until realizing I was a local - she stopped to put on makeup in the reflection of the old cash register - patrons started apologizing for the horrendous behavior - the the food - wow has this place fallen off - never again1

V
Vinny Famiglietti

If I could give a 0 star I would the waitress is not very friendly I got the goulash with the butter noodles. Both the noodles and the goulash had no flavor. I had one piece of the meat and maybe 2 forks fulls of the noodles. The noodles we way over cooled like they were falling apart and the meat in the goulash was very tough and chewy I sent it back and was told I couldn't choose another dish or comp it because I ate more then half the dish which was a lie. Then when we asked for a manager there is apparently no manager on duty today and was told we need to pay and call back tomorrow. We do not live an where near the area. VERY unprofessional and the food is very not worth the price. I have had better German food from booths at festivals l. Will never go back again.

J
John Smith

The worst food. Veal was greasy. Home fry potatoes were uneatable, half were burnt beyond recognition. Save your money, try someother German restaurant.

S
Shawn Reimerdes

The food doesn’t even feel very German, only a 1/4 of the menu. I had the sauerbraten and it was the worst I’ve ever had. The mashed potatoes were instant potatoes. The gravy was the worst. The sauerkraut and red cabbage was depressing.

Marsha K

This place was a German staple years and years ago. What a complete disappointment it is now. The only thing I enjoyed was the coleslaw but the worst thing about this restaurant is the friend I went with, had knee surgery and the bathroom was way up a flight of stairs. Absolutely ridiculous. It was so far from the way. I remembered it. one of the worst restaurants I have been to in a long time.

When I called to make reservations for Easter day, I asked if there was a special menu or could we use the usual menu. The person on the phone said, "Yes, you can choose for either menu". When we got there, we were told that you could only choose from special menu. We did not like most of what was on special menu. My husband asked for a beer and they brought the wrong brand. Had to send it back. When our dinner came, the fried potatoes on my plate were burnt and my husbands red cabbage tasted like vinegar. Took the meat and gravy home because that was all we enjoyed. The service was slow. It seemed that others were getting their meals and they arrived quite a while after us. We finally got fed up and didn't order dessert or coffee. We came home and had coffee and dessert of our own. We have been eating there for many years and now we are no longer customers

Food is horrible and overpriced. Ordered the goulash and the noodle were watery. I’m not Hungarian but I have had goulash before I know how it should taste and look. Also ordered wings and read that it was $19 but menu didn’t state how many wings, so I asked and the waitress said “like 12 wings”. I accepted and only received 9 dried wings for $19. They also gave us refrigerated bread. The place is really a bar for locals and not worth it for food. Very disappointed. The French onion soup was the only good thing they had. If you want beer and to hang with locals and maybe just have French ion soup then this is your spot.

I grew up in a German household. My parents, German immigrants, used to eat here back in the day. Tragic. The food is terrible and the prices are ridiculous for what they serve. Tasteless carrots, potato dumplings are some bizarre mashed ball covered with terrible brown gravy. Schnitzel was terrible. The soup and mashed potatoes were actually good. The decor was nice. My wife liked the Tiffany lamps. There are many better places to eat in Northport. Even McDonald's is across the street.
