Traveling back to San Angelo thru Ozona Tx On a Sunday meals are so bland with limited locations that provide a sit down meal. This location not only was open on Sunday, but allowed my daughter to bring in her pet as long as it was in a carrier. Meal was delicious and savory to my palet The sweet tea was refreshing and delicious A location to definitely return to. After a good meal a nice breezy rose garden walk to admire.
I was on a road trip to Odessa to buy a truck and stopped at a gas station to get some gas. The attendant recommended a place to eat so I decided to check it out. I’m glad I did! Besides the great service, they have the best B.L.T I’ve ever had. I highly recommend this restaurant.
Best steak I've ever had!!! Great staff! Delicious, fun atmosphere!!!
First time. Great atmosphere and steak options. Had the Rib eye.
Wait staff very pleasant and attentive. Food was exceptionally good. Well worth going there if in the area
They’re proud of their chicken fried steak and they should be. It’s as big as your head and delicious. Super on it waitress as well very efficient. A good pitstop if you’re driving through from West Texas.
It's Great. Best tasting food I've had in a long time ..
Great food. We got ours to go and there's enough for two meals for under 40 bucks.
This restaurant's name alone got my attention. I used to work at a place called the Hitching Post near Erie Pennsylvania almost 30 years ago. It was there I met my husband. So here we are 30 years later in Ozona Texas. I love the restaurant. It was kitzchy and small. You had to buy a membership into the drinking club to get a glass of wine. It was five bucks to be able to drink in Ozona Texas for three days if you stayed that long. But worth it. They're salad bar was excellent. And I had fish in a steakhouse. All good. Highly recommend if you're an Ozona. Went there again in 22...still the best place to get dinner in Ozona.😋😍
We came in on our way home to Alvin, Texas. Great service and HIGHLY recommend the dinner steak. The steamed veggies were delicious and perfectly cooked as was the steak and baked potatoes. I love that they bring out individual containers of the extras for the baked potatoes. Everyone was very friendly!! Will definitely return next time we drive through this area.
I know their Fredericksburg location well but this was my first chance to try their original restaurant. I was not disappointed! I rolled into town shortly before closing and they didn’t bat an eye. My service was friendly, efficient and the food was amazing. I really appreciated a good meal after hours on the road. I’ll continue to make it a regular pit stop on my i10 trips.
We arrived Thursday in Ozona later than planned. The website says M-Th open til 9. F/S open til 10. We arrived about 8:30 and were told open til 10...Yea, didn't have to gulp down our meal. We had been here several years ago and were excited to go back. We both ordered the CFS with 2 sides. Both had okra and I had fries, husband had mashed potatoes. Service was great. Food came out quickly, hot and cooked correctly. It was as delicious as the last time.
Such amazing food and service! We were passing through Ozona and found this gem on Google Maps just a bit off our route. The chicken fried steak was delicious and tender and the mashed potatoes were exactly the way I like them! Sad to report that I forgot to take pictures before cleaning my plate...
07.24.2025 Driving from Carlsbad Caverns; I simply wanted a steak dinner. I got to the point that whatever city was next up; I would search for a steak house. With great luck; I came across this particular restaurant; The Hitchin Post Steak House. I ordered the Dinner Steak which is a generous 10 Oz and it was cooked to perfection. The mash potatoes with brown gravy and corn were both delectable. I would like to commend my waitress. ( I do not recall her name; but cute and petite) who was professional, attentive and courteous keeping my Dr. Pepper and water filled to the top while attending to several patrons including a large family party. I'd also like to point out that the bartender not only attended to her bar customers; but was helping my waitress with taking out food and drinks. Great Team Work - ladies ! I loved everything about this place. The patrons are clearly humble hard working Americans and it was very evident they are regulars because it seemed as though everyone knew each other's names. Nothing in Los Angeles compares to this restaurant to simply seeing and experiencing a "humble" environment. If I ever pass through here again; To the owner; you've earned a NEW patron
Stopped for lunch on a roadtrip back from Alpine Texas. This place was right off Interstate 10 and was a good stop. Food was good and came out quickly. The waitress was super friendly and very attentive. The only downside was the restroom needs repair/remodel. Overall good experience though.
We had a great first experience here. The steak had a nice crust on the outside with a great medium rare finish on the inside. Staff was very friendly and made our stop here worth it.
I saw that this restaurant got good reviews so I thought I would try it. I pull up to the restaurant and saw the outside and became hesitant. I decided to go inside and it has a wonderful atmosphere. There is a cowhide on the wall. The waitress hands us the menu which looks like a newspaper. On the front, it tells the story of how this building used to be a sheep barn 70 years ago and then later turned into a restaurant. The food reminds me of a restaurant when I was a child that served chicken fried steak with country gravy. I am so glad I stopped here.
This was the first time there. I googled somewhere to eat in the town and came up with this one. I would say great choice. Food was awesome. Atmosphere was very nice. Service was excellent!
It's a small town steak diner and perfect in that context. The server was pleasant, swift, and attentive. I didn't use the bathroom but everything seemed clean. I got a burger, but should have gotten the chicken fried steak the guy at the other table got. It looked amazing. My burger was was hot and loaded with melted cheese and very fresh veggies. The coated fries were hot and an exceptionally high ratio of full sized cuts with only about 20% nuggets smaller than my little finger. We would make it a point to stop there if we had a choice. Thank you.
This restaurant offers great hometown customer service with country size food portions. Our family ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, British Burger, Hamburger and the Kids Mac and Cheese. Everything was so good and fresh! The fried steak was so big it had its own plate. Needless to say you’ll be full and happy leaving the Hitchin Post.
Loved it. Had the small order of fried mushrooms and they were huge and tasty. The ranch dressing was chunky almost home made? Then had a steak salad and it awesomely cooked. Don’t expect to be waited hand and foot because this a local restaurant not a franchise chain where their smiles are fake. This a true Texas place with Texas attitude but great food. Nicely decorated and good selection of booze. Will bring back the family next time.
I have never wanted to kiss a chef so badly in my life. Appetizer i ordered the spicy green beans they were fresh green beans so they still had a bit of a crunch which i liked could have used a little more flavorful spice and a little more spiciness but they were still great. I got the gourmet chicken fried steak omg it was humongous but so tender and delicious. The mashed potatoes were very flavorful. The corn was bland but add some salt and pepper and it's fine.
Food was awesome, especially the cheese curds! Staff was Awesome, big thanks to Gavin (Hope you get out to Iceland sometime!) good conversation and took great care of the table! Bar staff was really cool too, I spent time talking their ears off about Star Wars! Fun place to hangout and relax with some good music!
Right off the highway, plenty of parking and seating inside, nice staff, plenty of items on the menu. I tried their chicken fried steak. It was a bit chewy, I liked it. The okra was good too. Bathroom is tight and small though, so keep that in mind if you’re coming here for the bathroom.
Day 6 of our 8 day road trip to East Texas. Returning home now… long day through mile after mile of cattle ranges and farms… beautiful countryside! Stopped for the night in Ozona, TX. Places to eat… but most were closed for various reasons… probably the economy. Hotel desk clerk recommended the Hitching Post Steak House so off we went. Not much to look at but the eatin’ was sure good! My wife had the House Steak with a side salad and fried potatoes & onions… she loved it! I couldn’t resist trying the Chicken Fried Steak w/ fried potatoes & onions and green beans. The CFS was hand battered & deep fried round steak with a side of gravy! Potatoes & onions were as good as I hoped. The green beans were more Southern style… broad beans w/ diced ham & sweet red peppers. Buttermilk pie topped off my meal. Absolutely loved all of it! I’m a CFS lover and this was as good as I’ve ever had before!
Great little steakhouse. Staff was super friendly and attentive. Refilled my sweet tea promptly every time it was empty. (Great sweet tea!) Started with some cheese nachos to hold us over till our entrees arrived. Our steaks were cooked and seasoned perfectly as well as the baked potato. The green beans were also a great side choice. Definitely will visit the Hitchin Post again to try other menu items.
Stopped by on my way across the state -- it's a classic West Texas steakhouse. Went after lunch on a Thursday, the place was dead, which wasn't surprising for a small town. But the food? Incredible. I got a cheese burger, my friend got the steak fingers. Everything was delicious. Burgers are fresh ground, fries were crispy, generous portions all around, excellent price. I'm sure locals must know this place but if you're passing through and need a meal, I definitely recommend it! I'll be back next time I come through. Photo was halfway through the burger because it was so delicious, so please excuse the ketchup smear.
Fried mushrooms were among the best we’ve had. Chicken fried steak really good and fried okra outstanding. Friendly staff and swift service.
If you're hungry or want a light meal, this is a must stop place to eat! Very tasty comfort food. A nice detailed menu has the description of all the meals...everything looks so delish... The atmosphere is pleasing, the people are very welcoming. Oh, and take a peak at their mouth watering deserts! This is the deluxe chicken fried steak...takes up the whole plate...tender and delish, you won't leave hungry!
Came through here on a road trip and was not disappointed. Me, my husband, and our child licked the plate. My husband got the steak, I got the chicken fried steak, and our kid got the steak fingers. The staff is very friendly and service is just as good as the food. Highly recommend you stop by if you’re in the area. Have a nice outdoor patio my kid could run around.
This was the first spot we saw on Google maps but immediately looking at the photos I could tell this was gonna be good. Me and my three coworkers are glad we stopped here. We all enjoyed the food and the Service. I wish I could’ve tried more stuff if you see this stop and eat there. I had the pork chop sandwich special.
Loved everything. Quaint small town restaurant w very delicious food and amazing service. Small CFS was superb and very filling (especially for a person w a smaller appetite); extreme hamburger steak was incredibly flavorful and great portion size. Fried okra, fried potatoes, and mashed potatoes all tasted fresh and homemade. Decent beer selection w a $5 membership fee tacked on, but good for 6 months.
So glad we came across this spot in town. There wasn't much of an option but definitely feel like this was the best option. Service was great and super friendly. The food was so good and comforting, it was definitely what we needed coming back from a long road trip. There is also a billards in the back with more indoor and outdoor seating. Hope to be back next time I am passing through town.
Love this place! Privately owned with full bar and smoking in the bar area. If you want to drink alcohol, you need to buy a membership for $5.00 (per table, I believe..?). It's good for 3 days, if your in town that long. The food was good. Nice little salad bar with tasty thousand island dressing! LOL. Had the marinaded steak bites. Ordered MR, but came out more medium. Still tender enough not to complain! Needed a little more seasoning, but salt and pepper helped. Gourmet chicken fried steak was big! It and the gravy could also use more seasoning. Overall, I enjoyed it and would recommend!! Good service too!
One of the better small town restaurants heading west out of Texas. The decor and facilities are what one would expect of the area (the restrooms are an experience). A big bright spot is their chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes. I’d also highly recommend the cheese sticks which have a surprisingly spicy but not too spicy kick!
Buddy and I rode our motorcycles down for the night and found this place. Love the atmosphere and people in the bar. Food was good, nothing special, nothing bad. Good food and good drinks. If you're stopping in Ozona for the night I highly suggest you go and mix it up with the locals!
The food tonight was excellent! We had the chicken fried steak and steak fingers. The okra and grilled potatoes were also good. The gravy was perfect! We also had Reese’s pie to share. It was very good.
We spent the night in town while passing through. I wanted to have a beer, but the extra 5$ to buy a "membership" seems to be a way to make extra $ from people who will never be back. I passed. I had the chicken fried steak. The white gravy was great, some of the best I tasted (4 stars just for the gravy). The batter on the steak though was close to the opposite end of the spectrum. It did not have much taste and was rather bland. The meat was a little bland as well it could have used some salt of seasoning on the meat before battering. The corn and baked potato were there as well, but not that rememberable compared with the gravy.
Quirky, fun place with hookups for RVs just going in to facilitate a raucous night! Was really quiet mid-afternoon so service was quick and friendly. I think it would be really fun at night when it’s packed. Ordered the chicken fried steak to split and it’s massive so I’m glad we did (currently experiencing a food coma). Food was ok but the overall experience was great. Giving it four stars because you have to pay $5 to join their “club” for 3 days just to eat there!
Good place for Ozona, good service and atmosphere. Interesting place that has a smoking and job-smoking section. Have not seen that since the nineties! Ordered ribeye medium but it was more like well done.
stopped for lunch on our way to Big Bend from San Antonio. The food was good. I'm very happy we got the small mushrooms, it was enough to eat a family. I got the grilled pork ribeye and my husband to he cheese burger.
We ordered two gourmet chicken fried steaks, which were absolutely delicious and came with generous portions. We were so impressed that we could have split the meal and ordered extra sides since the steaks were so big! However, I was disappointed when I discovered that the green beans in my order had chunks of ham. I had informed the waitress about my severe pork allergy when I placed my order to go, so I was surprised that she hadn’t mentioned it to the kitchen. I assume she didn’t make a note for them, or they would have caught it and recommended a different side. This could have caused me to go into anaphylactic shock and use my EpiPen.
Usually I'd mark it 5+ stars. We live in San Antonio and go out of our way to get the gourmet chicken fried steak. Tonight's steak was way over cooked... Still good but not the amazing food we are used to... And service at 5:15pm was super slow 1 1/2 hours is too long when we are trying to get back on the road.
Delicious food ruined because either they allow smoking inside or the "wall" between the smoking and eating areas is as porous as cheesecloth.
We were looking forward to stopping here on our way to San Antonio, but we ended up a little disappointed. The steak selections made our mouth water, but the size shown on the menu was 1 lb. Way too much to continue traveling comfortably. So my partner chose a 10 oz "dinner" steak and I chose the gourmet CFS, advertised as having a better grade of beef. Overall, the dinner steak was tough and hard to chew despite being cooked medium. And in a ironic twist to shunning the big steaks in the menu, my server brought out a gigantic CFS and commented "I hope you're hungry" when she brought it to our table. No warning on the menu nor a question from my server to make sure I wanted a CFS that big. I worked through it by avoiding a lot of the breading, but the steak itself was tough and did not seem to be a better USDA choice. Loaded baked potato was delicious. Green beans were wimpy and watery. All in all, we were full and ready to roll on down the highway. Definitely make sure you're very hungry if you come here and take note that it's categorized as a private club, so you have to apply for a 3 day membership for $5.
Stopped in town on our cross tx trip. Tried this place out because it was this or sonic… the bathrooms are gross almost dirtier than a porta potty. Food was okay, place just felt icky….i guess its a small town
Would have been 4 stars if my steak was cooked close to how i ordered it. The grommet chicken fried steak was big enough for two. The kids enjoyed their burger and chicken sandwiches. I ordered the sirloin rare, and it came well done. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it much more if it was not overcooked.
Passing through and choose this place because they had good reviews especially for their country fried steak which I ordered. It was horrible. Overcooked, rubbery, dripping in grease, bitter with a bad aftertaste, and some of the breading was soggy. Also ordered the chicken entree which was ok.
The food was not horrible but it was not great ether. It was just ok. Definitely not what I would call a steakhouse. More like a dinner connected to a pool hall and bar. Most of what was called steak on the menu is hamburger steak or chicken fried steak. The British burger wasn't bad but its just a bacon cheese burger. The steak tips were alright, tinder so that was good. The fries reminded me of Long John Silvers. Our server was great. We were welcomed as soon as we walked in. Drinks were served quickly. Really every thing wa ok. The biggest issue is that if you ate not a smoker. There is no smoking in the dinning room but there is every place eles. The smoke dose come into the dinning room farily strong. We are not smokers and a sensitive to it. Not a big deal we just asked that our order be made to go, and they were very accommodating.
Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing. I ordered marinated steak tips. They were dry without a lick of seasoning or maranade. The portions are large and not very expensive but us Southern folks like our seasoned foods! A1 helped me get about half down. A good steak doesn't require addional sauce. These did.
Ribeye was sour and inedible, if you’re gonna charge $40 for a ribeye at least make sure it’s not old meat. I’ve had decent experiences here in the past, but this one was terrible. Spotting out old/spoiled beef is easy, please watch what you’re serving and keep dates on everything to save your customers in the future!
Decent food and service. Indoors smoking section.... meh. There is not a whole lot of tables in the non-smoking section (at least they were pretty full at the time I was there) sat I a separate section,.later finding out it was an indoor smoke section not terrible inviting when trying to eat dinner.
I can't believe I just spent 20$ on a salad that consisted of a handful of iceberg lettuce, a handful of diced tomatoes, maybe 1/4 of a cup of cheese and about 3-4 Oz of chicken! What a rip off! I really just wanted a nice big salad before hitting the road however that salad was so unsatisfactory that I ordered the mozzarella sticks as well- which were actually really good( which is why I didn't give the place 1 star.) Service was good.
Dreary place. Our rib eye was maybe 1/2" thick and grisly. The server tried hard, but the restaurant is huge and she couldn't keep up. An only game in town sort of place that has long since stopped caring. I did like my fried okra, and, after eating, we ordered a 1/2 serving of fried mushrooms. They were blazing hot, and really good. There were a ton of them and almost all ended up in the trash. So, in all, lousy steaks and good fried vegetables.
We have eaten here before. The food was tasty the last time we were there. We both ordered the chicken fried steak today. It had no seasoning and very tough, I couldn’t even chew it. I cut up the meat to give to my dogs. The service was ok but they were short handed and once we were ready to leave it took 30 minutes for waitress to come back so we could pay out. Finally another waitress came on duty, asked us if we were ready to pay, we said yes please, then she just disappeared.. we had to get up stand by the counter for our waitress to see we wanted to pay and leave. We will probably keep on driving and choose another place to eat next time..
Went for dinner and my wife ordered the Delux Chicken-Fried Steak and was served a plate that could have fed 4. The waitress thought it was funny how surprised we were at its size. When we ordered it we had no idea it would be so huge and there were smaller options on the menu that would have been better, an a more professional waitress would have pointed this out. The menu does not indicate how large it would be. I felt like we were taken advantage of, since we were just passing through. I didn't think it was funny at all.
The environment was neat, Old School West Texas Steakhouse for sure. Had a decent salad bar. The prices are stiff and pushed us to the fried fish, so I cannot comment on the cooks ability to do more than fry. Everyone we saw eating had ordered from the cheaper side of the menu. Our food was cooked well and was pre-packaged prior to frying. The Restrooms were bad. Pictures attached. Not handicap accessible. Bare plywood floors so there was an odor of old urine. There is a full bar onsite and quarter based pool tables.
We got a sirloin and it was the most dry and flavorless steak I have ever eaten. I tried my brother's fried steak and that was 5/10. My sister said the burger was dry and flavorless. The fried okra terrible. Mashed potatoes weren't special. We had garlic cheese curds and they weren't gooroot beer. Also the inside smells of cigarette smoke bad. Only thing I recommended was the rootbeer.
Ordered the steak but it had a weird taste , green beans were served cold also the corn was cold . Baked potato was dry 25$ per plate wasn't worth it
Horrible experience!!!! We were really hungry and had been driving for hours back home. We decided to walk in the only restaurant open. We were met with an itch of a racist waitress yelling very rudely “sit anywhere we like” we looked around a lil bc it was our first time. The waitress then spoke underneath your breath although I could hear her say they probably don’t even speak English, so the Mexican waitress said it in Spanish very unhappily and dryly sit where we want . We tuned around and left immediately. Very racist very rude we felt unwelcome!!!!!! Done show up please
Only steakhouse in town. I’ve had some bad experiences before, but this is by far the worst. It’s almost like they didn’t want me there and did everything they could to make sure I didn’t return. There were 3 tables in my area including mine and two servers. After the small portions of food arrived there was no return “how is everything” question. I ran out of water and wine and the other two tables were refilled twice with polite conversation while the servers intentionally didn’t glance my way. I’m a very patient person and thought I was imagining it so I waited and gave them ample opportunity to at least ask. Nothing. The steak had no seasoning or flavor giving the impression it was removed from whatever package it was in when raw and the heated up dropped on the floor, picked up and put on my plate. You know those small towns full of good ol’ boys? Normally they’re just that, good ol’ boy’s. Hitchin’ Post Steak House is more like a place where if they don’t like you or you’re not a local, they INTENTIONALLY don’t make feel welcome and do whatever they can to be sure you don’t come back. I live in Texas and having Hitchin’ Post represent what Texas is like is an embarrassment to the good people of Texas. Their reverse marketing does work because you couldn’t pay me to return to such a god awful, small minded, and intentionally pathetic establishment. I hope they reap what they’ve sown and after this generation dies off so will the business. To top it off, you can’t order beer or wine unless you pay an extra $5.00 to join their “club” so they can lie to the state to keep their liquor license.
Too bad they didn't even get past a simple phone call that was supposed to be for take out. When the lady answered I said "yes ma'am what cuts do yall have for you're steaks?" Well she had no idea and had to basically put me on hold to ask someone. It wasn't a long hold and that was no big deal but when she got back on the line she was very rude and said "are you going to order something?" Like i was bothering her or my question was outta line or something. I said "well maybe if yall have what I want" she gave an "ughh" and then proceeded to read of the cuts and weights. Only sirloin cut they had was $31.00 and im sorry I know prices have gone up but damn... the rudest service i have come across in a very long time. I cant even call that service, it was just rude and nasty attitude for absolutely no reason. I wouldn't recommend this place to a starving man. What a joke!
