Recensioni di Jack's Redding
Jack's is a solid place to go for a great steak dinner in Redding. I've been here a number of times and they don't disappoint. There's only a few things on the menu, so you know they're experienced in doing those few things well. You really can't go wrong with anything you order here. Their house salad that comes with all the entrees really lacks character, however, salad isn't why people come here.
Amazing as usual, jacks has always been unique. You can always count on the consistency of the food, took two friends who had never eaten there one just came over from England, she had the prawns and loved the food from the salad to the baked potato and the service was perfect. I had the fillet cooked perfectly med rare, flavor was excellent as usual. Places like this are hard to compare to other restaurants because its the food and the experience that add up to amazing. Never change Jacks!
The steaks here are there best in town. The place has been in business for decades and has a cult following of sorts. If it weren't for the wall mounted TV playing baseball games, walking in you'd feel as if you'd just stepped back to the 1950s. Some might describe it as such but I say it's a piece of history with excellent food. Their bartender is really fun to watch. He's so fast. They have a full bar, and they have one of our local winery's wines, Matson's Claret, available. While you could bring kids, and I have, it's not really the best for that. It's also not really a romantic location. I'd consider it a great place to meet friends or family.
Best steak ever. I opted for Filet Mignon. It was so tender and flavorful. Cooked perfect. My partner had a New York and it was equally good. Service is always excellent.
Jack's Grill is old school but definitely delicious. We enjoyed our early dinner. I am leaving here with a full stomach. I had a 10 oz New York and my wife had a 10 oz Top Sirloin. We both had baked potatoes and salad. We will definitely be back.
My very first visit, assuredly not my last! I've had the great fortune throughout my sales career of dining in tremendous steak houses across the country. Jack's Grill measures up to any entry, anywhere. Heritage, tradition and a continuing emphasis of excellence are hallmarks of a classic American steakhouse. Jack's Grill is rightly positioned in the pantheon of the G.O.A.T. in the genre, truly an institution. The people of Redding are incredibly lucky.
Absolutely the worst meal ever! saltines do not go on the table in a red plastic bowl, salad was sliver cut lettuce which waters and wilts quickly with a can of slivered green beans,10 oz steak was a sliver and cooked to much on one side, baked potato was twice baked, cremated - waitress should have caught that and thrown it away, scallops were raw in the middle, wine selections were cheap not appropriate. We are talking $36 dollars for a 10 oz new york, with the worst salad ever and an uneatable baked potatoe. Service kept attempting to remove items off the table, interrupting our conversation and doesn't it make you feel hurried when servers try to remove your drinks, but no I am still drinking that!
I have been going to Jack's for about 35 years now. Whenever I can. The New York steak with French fries, big bowl of salad with blue cheese dressing is all I get. Cooked Charred Rare. The juiciest most perfect steak ever. Sometimes I go medium-rare. Get there early and whatever time the Hostess tells you your wait time is you better be there. With a group of friends it might be 1:45 minutes. So you leave and get back and walk in and stand for a minute and times up she looks at you and waves you over. The greatest memory ever. Sorry so long but, I have eaten steak all over this country and 2 other countries and nobody is as good. The only place I have waited 2 hours for a steak and is more than worth it. DO NOT PUT CATSUP, A-1 SAUCE OR ANYTHING ON YOUR STEAK. TASTE IT FIRST AND YOU WILL SEE WHY I LOVE THEIR STEAKS. THANK YOU, NOW GET TO JACK'S.
Usually a great go to spot for the wife and I. We went there for our anniversary and the food was terrible. The salad was swimming in dressing, we got the 16oz fillet mignon with baked potato and the steaks were burnt all to hell on the outside and raw as can be in the middle (thought I heard mine still mooing) and late that night/early am we both started violently throwing up...a mild case of food poisoning. And to think it only cost us $185.00 and an anniversary. Tried to call and talk to someone with no avail.
Always look forward to Jack's when in Redding it is the best steaks around
WOW! This spot was a recommendation from a coworker and at first sight, I wasn’t sure. A very small space and packed on a Tuesday night. Sat at the bar while waiting - great conversation with the bartender and good pours on the drinks. Small menu, but dang they know how to do it right. The 10 oz sirloin was cooked perfectly and was like butter. Staff was incredibly attentive and friendly. Final touch was a small flashlight attached to the check to make sure I could see everything clearly. Absolute must when in Redding.
Service is quick and excellent. Food is great too. Just be aware of some tells you to order over the cooking don’t listen. Was told by a fellow patron to order Medium well when I usually order medium. Came out medium well as it should. Trust the kitchen not the patrons. This is coming from a farm boy from the Midwest who raises their own beef.
Truly a delish steak. The menu is simple, which was nice. Didn't care for the salad (had french dressing), as it was pretty sloppy with dressing and something about it just didn't taste "right". But since I wasn't there for the salad, no big fuss about that lol the steak on its own was memorable enough for me to return.
Historic facility with excellent drinks and exceptional steaks! Bartender "Houston " is a master and the sear on the Rib Eye was a fantastic addition. With drinks you can get close to 60$ per person. Restrooms are the only low point here, but only due to size- they were very clean- they are just small. Plan on an hour + wait on a busy night but they have an outside seating area to enjoy some drinks while waiting for a table. 9.8 / 10
Always good. Went on our anniversary, had small filet, wife had brochette, both were perfect. I see people complaining about how old and worn looking it is. That's the vibe, it is old. People wait outside before it opens for a reason. No reservations, get there early or wait. but don't complain if its crowded. If it's not your thing, don't go. I get it, there can be off nights, but for people who want a great meal, this is the place. If you think the chain restaurants have better steaks than Jacks, you probably thing Taco Bell is real Mexican food. It's not cheap, but if you are worried about money, stay home and don't spend your kids college money.
Their signature salad so unique, love the blue cheese dressing. Beef prices on their steaks were much higher, but the hamburger steak with mushrooms was delicious and a hearty serving. The staff is friendly and very attentive. Good times.
Love Jack’s! Always excellent! The steak is cooked to perfection every time and their house-made blue cheese salad dressing is delicious! Cozy, inviting atmosphere. Usually a packed house, but worth the minimal wait- especially if you saddle up to the bar for a heavy-handed pour of your favorite wine or cocktail!
Wonderful service...very small, expect to wait, but there is a nice, long, old-school bar to enjoy cocktails while you wait. Monday is a good day to go because many people mistakenly think they are closed on Mondays. Bartender makes great drinks. Menu is just about what they do best...steaks! I had the 16 oz New York. It was almost 2 inches thick! Nicely seared, pink to red in the center. I think my idea of medium rare is their medium. No worries, though. As long as the meat doesn't move or start talking to me, I can eat and enjoy it. (Although I was very tempted by the fried chicken...may go back for that soon). Atmosphere is very supper club-ish. Hostess is dressed to the nines. Lighting is very dim, which gives a feeling of great intimacy in a room full of people. Had to experience Jack's while I was here ... So glad I did!
Great food!! Their dishes were super clean!!! Great dishwasher, thanks Carlos
For all you complainers, Well... Great place, best service you could ask for. Food is incredible. But I'm pretty partial. I've been going there for 40 years +. Enjoy.
You can never go wrong with Jack's Grill. Steaks, ground steak or prawns, and the best french fries. Can't forget the awesome staff and cocktails. A must try!!
Great atmosphere and service. Drinks were really good and strong. Service was fast and servers were attentive. We both had ribeyes, medium rare, they were delicious and cooked to perfection! Salad was delicious, but dressing could be a bit much for some people. We arrived just after 4pm on a Saturday, even with the rodeo in town, we were sat immediately and service was prompt. Small place and pretty dark when you first enter so plan accordingly. Parking was super easy, we found a spot in front. We will definitely make this place part of our regular rotation.
I love Jack's. It is a CLASSIC steak house. It's the kind of place that I imagine John Wayne would have liked. It might not be for everyone, as it is totally old school and not some new fancy place. But if you want the best steak around, then show up, put your name on the list, have a dirty martini or two while you wait to be seated, then chug some salad while your steak cooks (the salad is basically liquid blue cheese!) And then enjoy an awesome steak. I've been there for a nice evening with my wife, I've been there with my crazy friends after a week of camping, and just about any occasion in between. I'd go as far as saying that it qualifies as one of Northern California's true hidden gems. I've seen a few bad reviews, which is why I'm writing this one. What those reviews all have in common is that they went in there with expectations of what they thought it should be. Check those expectations at the door and experience what it is.
Great steaks but be warned whatever you order they'll try and cook one less than that with a preference for mid rare/rare. Old practice to do this, as most modern steakhouses deliver exactly as ordered, so keep that in mind when ordering or ask your server to confirm the doneness of your meat. All that being said, love the low light, intimate feeling. Expect to wait at the bar with a great bar service, and not be seated until your full party is present. This place is a staple for coming to Redding for a casual night out with good steaks at pretty reasonable prices given the quality.
Please ignore all the three stars-and-under reviews! And for that matter, the four star reviews. These people all have their heads up you-know-where. This eatery never disappoints. It is, without exaggeration, the best steak you will eat in the northern third of California (and beyond?) and worth every penny. Staff are uber-friendly and service is fast as can be expected anywhere. Limited menu, but who cares. You go for their trademark steak or you stay the heck home. Having said that-being said-which I just now said, we did also try the fried chicken and it was surprisingly good. So if you're a wimp who's afraid of the big bad red meat then go ahead and order the chicken then; you won't be sorry. Our advice: get there between four and five o'clock to (probably) avoid any wait, but no guarantees as this joint is VERY popular. Any wait is well worth it nonetheless, but still. This is a great place to impress your snooty relatives from out of town, or to win the heart of a romantic interest who's not one of those pathetic vegans. Love Jack's. LOVE IT!!
Food and service was amazing. I was in last night. I witnessed about 4 people watching Thursday night NFL football on their phones. I asked the bar tender to please put on the 49er game. He told me he was sorry, but the owner won't upgrade the channels. So we had to watch poker. Owner! Please order more channels to watch nfl games. Thank you.
An old timey spot that doesn’t look like it’s changed since it opened. Kitschy but nice, the booths are comfy, the service excellent, and Jacks favorite NY steak with the perfectly seasoned and superb sear was impeccable. We got there early enough (4:00), to enjoy watching the staff interact like family. By 6:00, there were people waiting for a table.
Family feeling atmosphere, first time getting some grub and it was fire all four meals we got . Thanks for the love that’s cooked with this food you can always tell that food is cooked with love . Because you fall in love with lol 😝 thanks Jacks next we will come in and sit down instead of to go , will be back !💯👍👋
The best at being an old-school steakhouse and cocktail bar. Very busy at times.
I think this is an amazing steak house, however it is not for everyone especially if you don't like dark lighted loud restaurants. They have the BEST steaks I think I could get from anywhere, they come out just like how I asked it to be and has great service always helping as much as they can. Its usually pretty busy and might be a bit of a wait but makes up with the food.
Amazing food! Strong drinks & large portions for everyone to share! Perfect steaks & great blue cheese dressing! If you are a picky eater, they don’t have a lot of substitutes. Small place but outdoor patio is so nice while you wait for your table. Staff was so great & accommodating! Love this place & plan on recommending it to all my out of town friends & family!
The steaks are always amazing! Went early to wait (no reservations) and got to enjoy the beautiful patio area. The only semi downside was they do not serve on the patio, so it's a spot to enjoy a drink but not dinner. Of course we will be back, the staff were attentive and food was delicious.
To all the haters that have left 1 star reviews, WOW! I am traveling from out of town and this meal, for 2, was amazing and worth every penny! We also met many repeat customers which immediately contradicts your reviews! Also, the drinks are VERY good. Y’all need to go hate somewhere else!
This place is wild. A total dive in serious need of updating, and, yet, I had the best steak of my life there. The bartender -- who was a character -- made wonderful drinks -- strong -- and the wait staff were great as well. Someone on Yelp called it a right of passage and I could not agree more. Not for the faint of heart, but oh so worth it.
Has been a number of years since my last visit. Used to go all the time when I was in town on business. Back then (30 years ago), a great steak cost $12-15. Wait time were lengthy!!! Mike was such a great bartender. I understand he passed away a number of years ago (heart attack)? I now see that they have become VERY expensive. Knowing the quality of the steaks, Imwill gladly pay the higher cost!!
If you want the best steak in town in a historical atmosphere, then this is the place to go! The building has history, and their food, although a bit pricy, is well worth the whole experience! If ambiance is what you are looking for, then take time to have dinner here!
Old school vibe with a perfectly charred, medium-rare/rare-medium steak. Choose your cut and know that you're about to eat one of the five best steaks in your lifetime. This modest restaurant has been open longer than you've been alive, trust that they're doing it right and enjoy the ride.
3 generations of my family have been eating at Jacks. Cocktails are mixed well and it’s the only place to get a steak in Redding in my opinion. It’s usually an older normal crowd which I like personally. Great bartender, service, food and small delicious menu. What else could you ask for.
I have always wanted to eat here for years because of the reputation for amazing food especially the steaks. I finally did recently and they didn't disappoint! Thank you for the amazing experience!
Still the Best Steak in the World – 40 Years Later at Jack’s In 1988, fresh out of training and suited up for my very first day on the job, I found myself sweating through a worsted wool suit in Redding, California—on what turned out to be one of the hottest days on record at a sweltering 118 degrees. A young African American kid from the inner city of Flint, Michigan, I felt completely out of place. My boss gave me one piece of advice before I called it a night: “Promise me you’ll grab a steak at Jack’s.” So I did. I walked into a packed Jack’s Grill, and the first thing I saw behind the bar wasn’t a wine list or a maître d’—it was bull riding on TV. Bull riding! I nearly turned right around. But a promise is a promise. The host told me the wait would be 45 minutes to an hour—a perfect excuse to retreat to the comfort of my hotel and order room service. But something made me stay. When my name was called, I discovered Jack’s had a policy I’d never heard of before: if you were a party of one or two, they seated you with other solo diners to fill a table. Yet again, I almost bailed. But everyone had been surprisingly friendly, so I stuck it out. And thank God I did. That night I ordered the filet mignon—and it wasn’t just good, it was life-changing. Perfectly cooked, seasoned with something magical, and melt-in-your-mouth tender. It was hands down the best steak I’d ever had. That night marked the beginning of a love affair. For over a decade, every time work took me to Redding, Jack’s was my non-negotiable dinner stop. And when I no longer traveled there for work? I’d still occasionally make the 2-hour drive from Sacramento just for that steak. Over the years, I’ve had the privilege of dining at some of the most renowned steakhouses in the world: New York, Chicago, San Francisco, Seattle, Miami, Hong Kong, Tokyo (even Kobe), Montreal, Vancouver, Rome, Paris, Saint-Tropez, you name it. The only place that even came close was a little gem in Rome’s Jewish Ghetto—but even that couldn’t quite top Jack’s. Fast forward nearly 40 years later. I took my father to the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene, Oregon, and mid-track meet, a wild idea hit me: “If we head out right after this ends, we can make it to Jack’s before they close at 10 PM.” Five hours later, we pulled into Redding. Jack’s looked almost exactly the same. And the steak? Still flawless. Still the best I’ve had anywhere on the planet. Funny thing is—I can’t recall what happened on that first day of my now long and successful career. But I remember every single detail about that first steak at Jack’s. So here’s my advice: if you’re ever within 100 miles of Redding and love a great steak, don’t miss Jack’s. Trust me, it’s not just a meal—it’s a memory waiting to happen. Jack’s isn’t just the best steakhouse in Redding—it’s the best steakhouse in the world.
I remember when steak dinner was 12.50 way back in the early 80’s. Love the place. No the prices reflect the raise on beef prices but still worth it.
We've been searching Redding for weeks, looking for a quality steak. We finally found what we were looking for. We tried every so called steakhouse on the east side of town only to be let down time after time. Jack's has the best steak We've had in Redding, not only that, it has the best waitstaff and atmosphere. We were pleased with the value for the price. It's the only place we'll be eating steak!
Haven't been here in almost 30 years, but if it's anything like I remember, it's a must-visit steakhouse if you want the best pan-fried steak you've ever eaten! The atmosphere is amazing, too. I live near Seattle, but during my childhood, my family would spend a week at Shasta Lake, and we ALWAYS went into Redding just for Jack's Grill! ,
This was ‘Old School’ at its’ finest! What a great place and EVERYTHING was perfect. Too many places try to be chic and end up having no soul. This place has been around for almost 90 years and it wears it well. We got there at 4:30 for an early dinner and by 5:30 the crowds started to arrive. We both had the ribeye steak and they were cooked perfectly. The baked potato was very good and the salad was a killer!
The salad was fresh and delicious, the steak was cooked to perfection, and the service was excellent. The lighting was a bit on the dark side, but overall it was a wonderful experience!
I ordered the fries topped with steak. The steak was fantastic. I only knocked the review down to 4 stars because their fries are awful. They had the texture of fries you'd find in the frozen aisle at Winco. Just stick with the steak and you'll be very happy.
The steak was delicious and cooked perfectly for me. The rest of the food was meh. The atmosphere was fine, I don't really understand the whole "dim lighting" thing though. They do not serve dinner on their outdoor patio which is a shame.
We had an excellent steak dinner. They have a beautiful little court yard garden area that we sat in while waiting for a table. It's unfortunate you can't dine outdoors because it was extremely loud inside making it difficult to converse without being loud. It's nice to finally locate a restaurant that truly knows how to cook a steak properly in this town. They do it to perfection! I can't give them 5 stars because they go to some lengths on steak as well as the battered Shrimp so why such a boring bowl of greens for a salad? Chopped Iceberg and dressing on the side? Surely a tomato or something. Do go to Jacks, they won't disappoint.
The atmosphere is what I would call classic dive bar - but not the dangerous scary kind. Both the staff and other customers were friendly. The steaks were cooked accurately to our requested medium rare, and were very good.
First time here.Service and food was excellent very attentive staff. Large portions of salad and a large baked potato was served with our steaks. Wife had the filet and I had the New York. Both were cooked to order and tasted great. A bit loud for our liking. I would go back but probably not my wife.
First time here in about 20 years and friends first time ever. We were craving steak. Steaks were flavorful. Service was super. The salad was delicious. It's nice they bring you the full bowl to refill your plate and that the dressing is premixed. Lighting is very subdued. They checked back often. Large delicious baked potato. They sear the outside of the steak and I wasn't aware, the menu doesn't state it. I don't particularly care for seared steaks. They should let people know somehow by menu or server. We told her we were first timers. My thicker top steak was undercooked, my friends thinner ribeye was overcooked. I took it home and made steak salad next day. They did offer to recook, but it was already nearly 45 minutes after walking in the door. So 4 stars only for the lack of sear info for guests and incorrect cook temp of both steaks. I will go back but now I know what to asked for.
OK it's been there for donkey's years doing what it does really well. The place was full when we were there with local people obviously repeat custom. The steaks were brilliantly cooked and tasty. The ambience you can only describe as 'authentic' Just go for good steak and to say you've been there.
Food was great (once it came) It took the waitress a while to take our our order. She kept walking around and to the bar. Not taking orders. We had to flag her down and let her know that we were ready to order. Its also too dark, flashlight 🔦 are provided. The steak was melt in your mouth delicious. Too dark to take pics of food.
We've been coming to Jack's for a couple decades, and the place hasn't changed. Wish there was covered outdoor dining for winter months, it's just so cramped in there it's like you're almost walking on top of people. If you have a big group like over 9 then you won't be at the same table. Steak was cooked great but for filet seemed a bit fatty, with bigger fat veins going through it. The drinks are always on point and love the bar area.
We love Jack's. Their food is pretty good-steaks are for sure the best thing in the menu, fried chicken was okay. Service is almost perfect and atmosphere is great. They would have received a 5 in the service department but we were highly disappointed with our most recent trip. This was the first time we went with a group, not just my husband and I. My husband, sister and I ordered 2 meals for the 3 of us to share . We did not ask for ANYTHING to be split by the kitchen. We never even told the waitress we were splitting anything. For all she knew, one of us could have been eating the appetizer we ordered. She took it upon herself to bring 2 extra plates and then charge us $8 for it!!!! Seriously ridiculous. That would have been over the top if they HAD split it for us in the kitchen but they didn't. I disputed the charge and the waitress said that is just policy when someone doesn't order a meal! I'm sorry, what!? Definitely changed my mind about how much they actually care about the customer and how much they are just greedy for free money. They literally got $8 extra dollars out of us for plates we did not ask for and did not use. Outrageous Jack's. Do better.
The menu is good - very classic steakhouse. The homemade salad dressings are great - but the edge goes to Thousand Island! NY Steak was seasoned impeccably and served well. However, inexplicably the baked potato was not thoroughly cooked, and neither were the French fries with the fried chicken. The seasoning for the fried chicken was AWOL. Using lots of salt and pepper with the table shakers weren't enough to salvage it. Dark meat was cooked well, but wow was the white meat cooked to death and dry as the Mojave. Staff was pleasant and attentive. Probably wouldn't return but it does have a classic Redding vibe from the 1930's: was pretty classic.
We asked where the best steaks in Redding were and it was Jack's Grill all the way. The steak was indeed good but left unseasoned so salt and pepper was required. The cooking was perfect medium rare and the baked potato came with loads of butter and sour cream mixed with chives. Very tasty. Soggy side salad, decent garlic toast, lively atmosphere, reasonable prices, full bar for those who drink. Nice outdoor patio.
I'm sorry. I don't understand all the extremely positive reviews. There was definitely some pros and cons. Pros: Very good steak, but I've had better at a lower price. Very good baked potato with some of the best sour cream with chives I've ever eaten. This was probably the best part of the meal. Waitress was friendly. Cons: Incredibly loud! It was hard to hear my wife speak to me across the table. The guy behind my wife was clearly drunk and extremely loud and obnoxious. I wish they would have cut him off and asked him to take it down several notches. The french dressing on my salad was disgusting; kind of spicy with an odd bitter aftertaste. I couldn't eat more than a couple bites of my salad. The garlic toast was mediocre at best. And, what's with the saltine crackers on the table in a basket? They were the worst saltines I've ever eaten. They were so bland and had no salt on them. $78 for 2 people with no drinks and no dessert?! Extremely pricey and not worth it in my opinion.
took my dad here for dinner when he told me last time he was there was around 1969 when he was 12. his steak looked great and he said it was. i was envious. we were at a steak place and i mistakenly made the choice to order the fried chicken. do not order the chicken. it was without exaggerating, the most bland chicken i've eaten in my entire life. no salt. no pepper. 😢
I've heard several good reviews on Jack's, and that I really need to try it. Thursday the 25th of August I took my girlfriend for a birthday dinner. Granted we didn't get there until around 730, it was about a 45 minute wait. Ordered the New York steak and I wasn't impressed. I thought the steak was great little Salty and with a little bit more of a sear then needed ( was almost burnt ) Everyone I talk to about the service and food, said the service really goes down hill as it gets later ( but they don't open until 4pm ) My suggestion is to be there as early as you can be, they DON'T TAKE RESERVATIONS, it's first come first serve.
Steaks were amazing and flavorful. Wasn't exactly impressed with the side dishes though. My biggest complaint was how confined and loud the atmosphere was and definitely wish they would've served dinner on the patio. I would visit again just with different expectations.
Great service and a unique, retro vibe. Generous drink pours. The food was marginal. The ribeye was undercooked - cold and still purple on the inside. I ordered this medium-rare which I do all the time but have never had it still cold and purple. The fries were dry and cold. The salad was decent but plain. Considering they specialize in steaks, I expected better.
We were seated right away but the place filled up quickly afterward (5:pm). The service was fantastic 👏 The food.. not so much. Salad arrived soaked in a tasteless dressing with tasteless garlic bread. The baked potato was perfect. My New York steak was grisly and tough. I left hungry with a doggy bag. No desserts offered. High prices. Would have been happier at Sizzler!
The service is wonderful and the drinks are Strong in the best way. But the “salad” is absolutely drenched in nasty dressing, the butter tabs are cold and hard to push into the potatoes, and they do Not believe in seasonings. Jacks is a staple place for Redding though and I believe everybody’s gotta go at least once. Just be aware you will be overpaying for what you get because you’re not paying for a great steak, you’re paying to eat at Jacks. Beautiful little spot for a first date or something.
I think a locals landmark. Small place, limited seating, limited bar, dark inside. Had an Italian mafia hangout vibe. I think if you spring for the steak your memories will hold longer.
Hubs and I had heard great things, so we decided to come see for ourselves. Loved the ambiance, small intimate atmosphere. Drinks were solid pours, very good. Ordered filet with scallop side. Steak was good. Scallops were breaded and not cooked through. Salad was soaked in dressing and mine had a hair that was not ordered 😳Bread was plain garlic. Mushroom side bathed in brown gravy. Just under $200 with tip for two. Not the experience I had expected.
Been going to Jacks since 1980. Never been more disappointed than this in this restaurant. Spent $300 for 4 people and i could have had a better meal at Applebees. Ordered a medium rare NY steak and at best it was medium in the middle and well done on the edges. A restaurant that specializes in steaks should be able to cook a steak correctly. Service was great. Just so sad that they couldn't properly cook a steak.
You WILL be disappointed if you’re visiting from a bigger city. Just go get fast food at this point. Salad: iceberg lettuce and for someone reason CANNED GREEN BEANS ON TOP. Old Fashioned: gross and with crushed ice, might as well take a shot or sip on whiskey. Steak: the meat was actually good. Fried Chicken: they didn’t use any salt or pepper on that. Horrible.
This place was highly recommended, I ordered the NY Steak, and the flavor was great, the fries were not, the waitress forgot to bring my companion's drink, we had to flag her down 20 minutes later to re-request a drink. The room is very loud! in my opinion that robs from experience. Didn't see any kids there, parking was easy just street parking. Don't think that they had a vegetarian option, it is a steakhouse.
We had heard good things about Jack’s, but this is Redding so we had realistic expectations, unfortunately our low expectations weren’t even met. We were hoping for just well cooked, well seasoned steaks, nothing more nothing less. We waited for well over an hour after the waitress told us it would be 35 minutes, which like, okay no big deal we had some drinks and enjoyed the atmosphere etc. The bar was charming and the drinks were passable, we were chatting, it was not bad. But, by the time we were finally sat & ordered that’s when the real disappointments began. The salads were DROWNING in dressing, unfortunately from reading the other reviews on here I know now that’s the norm… All they consisted of us chopped up, soggy ice burg & slimy canned vegetables, which was unappetizing to say the least. We both ordered our steaks medium rare, a filet & a New York. They came out with good crusts, decently seasoned, but completely raw all the way through. Like raw raw, cold and dark and RAW. The cook was so off on our food. It was just honestly ridiculous and beyond frustrating to have waited for everything to build up to that. We immediately asked for the check, the waitress and the hostess didn’t ask if they could take them back or offer any sort of compensation—nothing. Whatever, they don’t have to do anything but riddle me this: why go out and pay for someone to wildly undercook your food when you can make something 10xs better at home. It was not worth the money we spent at all. I genuinely don’t understand why Redding is unable to figure out how to have a decent restaurant scene. Personally I’d go back for a drink, but I definitely wouldn’t stay for dinner.
Disappointed in this place, atmosphere is good. Not impressed with the food, ordered a salad which was terrible, wilted lettuce with green beans, oil and vinegar dressing tasted like straight vinegar, couldn't eat it. Friend ordered a steak medium however it was rare. Definitely not like it used to be for the money. Won't be going back.
Was told to try it out do to its history etc. Went with a friend and the wife, I got some over priced prawns, both the wife and friend got steaks which were over cooked. Friend decided to keep his but wife sent it back. Took for ever to get her steak back to be burnt on the outside and semi cook well inside. Both had asked for medium rare but all this history and they can’t cook a steak smh. Male bus boy was nice and very good with all the tables, meanwhile our waitress was annoyed they messed up our order and we brought it up. We decided to see if they would compensate for their lack of cooking and the long Waite time for them to fix my wife’s steak and nothing. Sad to say steak was not seasoned well, poor cooking and bad customer service. Should’ve listen to all the bad reviews we read before going Owell
Don't believe the hype. For $50 a steak, there should be more than paper napkins. Let's get some fresh pepper, and by the way: the bartender and hostess are much more into each other than helping guests. After waiting for my $50 steak for 30 minutes, I left as the hostess heckled me. I love old school steakhouses, Shaws in Santa Maria, Burns in Tampa, etc. Was hoping that, based on the reviews, this would be on that caliber. Unfortunately, the 45 minute experience leading up to not actually getting my food kept me from actually enjoying what the restaurant says is a great steak.
I’m so sad to have to post this! We have been goingto Jacks for over 15 years! Today was the worst experience ever. The waitress was literally drinking on the job, she didn’t even come once after taking our order. I had to find someone to run our bill and, and the bartender was trying to figure out what was happening the whole time. She didn’t even care as we walked out, she was holding a glass of wine laying over the register. Never again will I go back. Place is dingy now, overpriced for the food and the service is mediocre at best!!!
Went there for hubby's birthday. He ordered a 16 oz steak to be cooked medium well. When he got it, it was burned on the outside and red completely inside and bleeding all over the plate. They took it back to fix it, but it only burned the outside more. Still raw and bleeding inside and now tough. Salads were swimming in dressing.... waitress was kind and tried to fix things and the busboy was on top of his job. As for the food, DON'T BOTHER!!! Was really disappointed after hearing their so great. FYI our dog is enjoying a 45.00 tough burned / raw steak.
We walked out before ordering. The waitress was rude and the atmosphere was absolutely unenjoyable. No soft music or any music whatsoever. Complete silence. Everybody was scrunched together. We were told 4 adults & 1 small kid couldn't sit in a booth, so they sat us on a huge 8+ person table where we had to really raise our voices just to talk to each other from across the table. This place doesn't deserve its 4.5 rating. If you want to pay up for a nice meal, we recommend finding somewhere else.
Like many reviewers, I was told this is THE place for a steak. I love supporting local spots, especially places that have been in operation for multiple decades. Jack's fit the bill for these two items. AMBIANCE Small, dark, limited seating. You're greeted immediately by the bar when walking in. There is no space if you have to wait for a table. I agree with other reviewers, the drinks are solid pours. This is not the place for fancy, umbrella drink of the month cocktails. By the time the tables are full, the noise is so loud, you have raise your voice to be heard at your own table. Forcing the table next to you to raise their voices, and so, on and so on. Pretty soon you can't hear anything. Not a date, anniversary, birthday spot. FOOD Here's where I don't get it... rating these steaks as "life changing" could only come from folks that have never ventured outside of this local area, or have killed their taste buds with too much smoking, dipping, or fireball. Even though we had leftovers, nothing was worth taking home for later. My kids even told me that my backyard steaks were better. Salad is plain iceberg lettuce with SOO much bland ranch you end up eating lettuce soup. PRICING Too high for what you get plain and simple. While we were there, at the table next to us were two guys so hammered that by the time their food arrived one guy literally face plant passed out into his plate. Not the behavior of customers at a high end steak house. 1 star simply because I was amused by the whole scene there. I can only presume folks keep coming here for nostalgia.... because I CANNOT believe its for the food.
GO HERE IF YOU WANT TO BE DISAPPOINTED….. if you hate somebody send them to this restaurant…. Theylll hate you back…. And never talk to you again…. I swear I’m not going toooo far…. CHEAPER than the DOLLAR STORE…. Total SCAM……. THEY NEED TO TAKE THE “ CHOICE STEAK “ SIGN OFF THE FRONT OF THE BUILDING… Was given water then we Ordered a 40$ sirloin with salad and a baked potatoe….. 60$ Filet mignon with salad and fries 35$ Fried chicken made in house with salad and fries she left without taking our order for drinks… Went downhill when the “poorboy salad” arrived… I asked what was on top of the salad… she said FRENCHSTYLE CUT GREEN BEANS……like it was fancy… mind you it’s just ICEBERG LETTUCE WITH CANNED GREENBEANS ON TOP……nothings else on the salad except for sauce…..then the table next to us his steak arrives and we look over at it…. It’s black…… immediately my bf got up and asked to cancel the order…. She refused to let us cancel told us to sit down it would be right out…. We gave them the benefit of doubt it was brought out and it was full of fat and burnt…. The chicken was also over cooked and low quality chicken…. We told them we weren’t happy and she told us she would bring out boxes to take it home and bring out the bill… my bf told her we would not be taking it home…. She did not offer to remake it or refund it …. It was almost like a routine for her she knew we weren’t gonna like it when we tried to cancel the first time….. he told her he wasn’t gonna pay for it and she said she was gonna call the cops… we left all the food. Do yourself a favor and go to Pete’s by the mall they know how to cook a steak 🥩…. I’ve had a better steak at dennys…. This place been scamming for 68 years…. The food was horrible I could only imagine what the kitchen looks like… poor service poor food I would give 0 stars if I could… the food looks like the outside of the building…. Cheap… 68 years and you couldn’t afford a nicer building or upgrades… with all the penny pinching, cutting corners, and price gouging this place does it’s amazing they’re still in business… I love to support small businesses…. But this place needs to be shut down… immediately… we have no problem spending money I give 20- 80$ dollar tips when I receive great service… when somebody asks me where to get a steak I’m gonna tell them DO NOT go to JACKS GRILL skip that place and …… GO TO PETES, CR GIBBS, or CATTLEMENS…….
Service was alright. We waited longer then estimated but no big deal. I like dark environments so that was fine but they go literally give you a flash light to sign your check. The food though? I've never had worse food at a restaurant before and it cost 50$ for a ribeye. The cut was good and it was tender but there was no seasoning and it was so burnt that's all I could taste. The salad it came with was drowning in dressing and the fries I got with it were over cooked and cooked in very dirty oil. I've lived here my whole life so I've heard the praise and never been so disappointed.
My wife and I took my father and his wife out for his birthday dinner. Jacks has always been my father’s choice for a great steak. Unfortunately we had a terrible experience and I’m not one to post reviews but for four people at $249.00 this one is getting a review! My father and I ordered the fillet mignon and his wife ordered another steak. We all ordered our steaks to be cooked medium . My father’s came out with a seared outside and completely raw inside, it was actually still cold. My steak was barely cooked enough to eat and my father’s wife’s steak was also really rare. My Father’s steak was not even edible so we had to send it back.instead of cooking him a new steak our waitress tells us she will throw it back on the grill. As it came back out it was even more seared almost burnt on the outside but still uncooked in the center. Again not even edible unless you like eating raw meat. The fact that they didn’t provide him with a brand new steak and they took there mistake back and tried to re-cook It was extremely shocking to me when I’m paying $50 for a steak. The french fries were soggy, and the service was definitely not the best. We were very sad to walk out of the place not caring if we even go back as it’s been a Redding landmark and my father has been been eating there for over 50 years. Probably the worst $250 spent on a meal that I can think of ever!
If I could give a zero I would. We were in the last groups to be served and our server who has been working there forever, brought this horrible food that took 40 minutes to cook. And then she tried to bring someone else’s steak to us that needed more cooking. What happened to the good ole jacks we used to know. This isn’t the first time this has happened in the last year. Pretty bummed.
We had reservations for Mosaic for our Saturday Valentines date but since they weren’t serving steak my husband asked if we could try Jacks. I agreed but it was AWFUL. My husband ordered a ribeye and fries and I order medium rare filet and baked potato. Waitress came out with a potato for both of us and my steak was literally a black charred burnt piece of meat. I know they dim the lights in the dining room but the waitress knew what she was doing… there are bright lights in the kitchen! She plopped the wrong orders down like it was nothing and walked off not making eye contact or checking back in. We had to flag down another waitress to confront them about our food. When our waitress came back she had the nerve to defend the kitchen saying she would have to “butterfly” my new filet because all the filets are thick and they all “just cook like that”. Nope. All filet Mignon is not “too thick” to cook it right. No real apology. No compensation offered. I ate a baked potato for dinner (below) no steak and 15-20 minutes after my husband had his steak mine was served. By then I had no appetite. Oh and he didn’t get his crunchy overcooked fries until then too. What a complete joke. Won’t be returning to this place!
