Charlie's Diner is exactly what you'd expect a good diner to be. Great comfort food at a reasonable price. Friendly servers with Southern charm. I love their breakfast. My go-to s are the Cowboy (w/home fries) platter, Cowgirl (w/grits) platter and the Rocket-in-a-pocket (breakfast pita). There's always a fresh pot of coffee brewing just like your Granny's home. Bailey and Vera are two of the best servers in all of Duval. Friendly and attentive. No one has a bigger smile than Bailey. There's daily specials for lunch. Definitely check out Charlie's Diner.
Great local breakfast spot with fast, friendly service. Both the Hearty Breakfast and Western Omelet were big, fresh, and delicious. Our coffees were constantly refilled to stay hot and tasted better than typical-diner-average. I’ll definitely revisit!
Went here when visiting family for dinner and breakfast. Great food, healthy choices, and our server was so personable - She had us all smiling! Highly recommend Charlie’s - just wish I lived closer.
Hamburger steak mash and gravy or triple decker club sandwich and fries!
Breakfast was beyond delicious. My entire family came out full and ready to hit the road back to Ga . Our waitress was Vera , she was very sweet & whom ever may be in the kitchen really knows what they’re doing everything was very good and seasoned well. Even the prices were great . When we come back to Jacksonville we’ll definitely be back .
food is outstanding.. A little small on the portion for the hashsprouts but good.. Price was right.. Service very good cup never went below half.. Restaurant was clean and his environment was family friendly. I'll go back Want to add, dine in and take out was excellent. I have ate there 4 times..
This place is a hidden gem. It's very easy to drive past it if you don't know to look for it, I just noticed it for the first time the other day, and holy cow thank goodness I did. The staff was awesome, true Southern hospitality, everyone was smiling, laughing, engaging with the customers. You don't see service like that anymore. The food was top shelf. It was brought out quick, presented well, and we better than a lot of home cooked meals I've had (sorry if you end up seeing this mom!). Charlie's is definitely going to be a routine stop for us. Hope we see you there!
We had to make a U-turn and come back after we passed Charlie's coming from the mall, and the extra effort was completely rewarded. Absolutely loved this place. We are from out of town, but it was clear that most of the crowd were locals and regulars. We were even treated to a serenade by one of the other customers. The meatloaf was excellent, the burger huge, the country fried steak sandwich delicious. The selection of southern sides including black-eyed peas, okra and tomatoes, and rice and beans make this place a rare jewel in a sea of French fries (which were really good too by the way). Our delightful waitress could not have been kinder or more helpful, even pre-shaking a new mustard bottle for our daughter when the other bottle had separated a bit, as they always do. Don't miss this gem if you're in the area!
Love the friendly people there. Choosing what to eat was hard, everything’s great. Husband and I shared each others meal. I had triple deck and he had the Country fried steak with friend squash. Sooo good. He’s been there before. Will keep coming back. ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Excellent breakfast with my dad! Everything fresh and made to order. Thanks Charlie’s for making a bad day so much better!
Absolutely loved all the food we had and our 3yr old really enjoyed their smiley face pancake. Staff was super efficient and made our experience very enjoyable. Hidden gem is an understatement. We look forward to making this place a regular spot for our family. The FOOD 🤤 SO good!!!
I am glad we found Charlie's Diner. Each time I've been, it was an awesome experience. The waitress is so bubbly and makes you feel at home with her service. The food is also absolutely the home cooking feel. If you want a grandma's house experience, definitely try this diner out.
This restaurant is right next to NAPA Auto Parts on Philips Highway, just south of Sunbeam Rd. I've driven past it many times and never noticed it. It was after 2pm on a Saturday (they close at 3) when we walked in, and we were welcomed and assured it was not too late. We ordered and were served promptly. The food was delicious and the service was great! As we ate, other diners arrived and were welcomed. We didn't feel rushed at all. I will be going back!
One of the few authentic old timey diners. Very friendly staff and seemed very inclusive. Food was good and reasonably priced.
My wife and I had a great brunch. Prices are reasonable and food made to order. We had the Philly cheesesteak with fried okra and the Philly omelette with grits and a side of pancake. And coffee of course. Food was delicious. Very friendly service.
Nice little country gem in the metro area... Seems like a small town diner. Service was friendly, fast and prompt. The coffee was decent diner coffee. I ordered country fried steak with home fries, three eggs and a biscuit. Everything was cooked perfectly. The gravy on that country fried steak I'm pretty sure was home made and not from a packet. That biscuit! Oh mama! My meal was absolutely fabulous, but if I went back I'd have to try the biscuits and gravy.
Everything great, cute establishment with great atmosphere and service and simple yummy food.
It’s so great every time and Bailey is so amazing and food is always on point
We came in with our 4 children, they greeted us with smiles, pushed 2 tables together for us & checked on us often. They talked to the kids & amped them up for eating their food, gave them lollipops (after asking me) when they were finished with their food. The atmosphere of everyone in there was awesome, so friendly & kind. Loved this diner!!
Love this place! We go five days a week for breakfast. They have amazing servers a wonderful owner and the food is perfect. Very fresh eggs homemade biscuits and I’ve never had service without a smile! By far my vote for the best breakfast in Jacksonville if you want a nice diner home-cooked meal feel! We have literally stopped going to other places for breakfast and only come here. Ask for Bailey I promise you won’t be disappointed.!
Just left from having lunch at Charlie diner with 6 kids and 4 adults so big table. We were greeted with smiles and friendly faces, they made up tables for us quickly and the service was outstanding. Our waitress never let our glasses empty and was so sweet to us and our kids. Than the food the food was excellent . Definitely recommend Charlie's diner.
I absolutely enjoyed this place the food was very fresh and reminded me of my grandma's homestyle cooking. There were several options to order from the menu and a variety of foods to pick from. Everyone was so friendly and would absolutely recommend this place!!
Everything about this was good. We were early for an appointment, and decided to stop in at Charlie's. It was Christmas eve, and they were almost empty. They provided excellent service and food. We tried breakfast and dinner, all fantastic. The staff made sure to stop by and check on us, it was nice. I regret living so far away, but when I'm in the area, I will surely go back to Charlie's.
Great diner! My favorite place to eat!
Great down home diner. Nothing fancy but great food and service.
First time here service and food was good
Wonderful waitress, very friendly. Nice atmosphere, breakfast was super tasty.
Absolutely in love with this cute little diner! Great service each time we've been. This has definitely become our birthday spot!
The food was great but Bailey the waitress is like the sweetest girl ever. Highly recommend this place.
Favorite Diner! Hamburger steak mash and gravy, triple decker club sandwich
Comfortable small diner down home feel food was great and good portion. Staff was very pleasant and attentive will return when on this side of town and hungry. Had the hamburger steak with brown gravy and onions my belly is happy and fatboyitis is cured stop in and grab a bite!
Fantastic customer service with a nice quite atmosphere. This place isn't pretending to be a diner; it's the genuine experience! Food was delicious and decently priced - I got the 2 stack pancakes with eggs and sausage links.
Small town dinner atmosphere. Regular locals. Staff very friendly.
Excellent food and staff, especially Bailey. The servers sometimes attempt to bribe the customers... This adds to the overall friendly and family environment.
Great country food & atmosphere. Nice & very friendly service.
I just had a wonderful breakfast there. It was a fried steak platter that included small chipped up potatoes with three scrambled eggs sausage gravy cheese and a big piece of cut up fried steak right on top. I opted to substitute a pancake for my bread for an upcharge. It was very good and I do recommend it! Try their country girl or country boy platters. You won't go wrong!
Love Charlie's Diner for breakfast! I usually get the breakfast pita or omelette with homefries. The homefries are good and crispy. My husband loves the sausage gravy and biscuits. The bacon is good and crispy too. Really attentive and friendly service... Bailey is Awesome! Highly recommend for a good country breakfast with great service.
Every time I go to a restaurant that has a Philly cheesesteak. I have to try it out and this was dynamite. Great taste good atmosphere friendly service. I will return.
Glad we found this little gem on Google maps. All the typical stuff you would find on a IHOP menu but with a lot more flavor. While we were setting and eating we noticed most everyone knew and was conversing amongst each other so this appears to be a favorite amongst locals. Our server Bailey was attentive and very friendly with such a positive attitude and energy level that it was infectious. Highly recommend if you're passing by.
Bailey and Vera are great folks to visit with, the kitchen always makes sure the food is fresh and hot!
I love the unassuming vibe. Missy was amazing! The over medium eggs were perfect!
Best breakfast spot in Jax!! They get you in and out quick so you’re not late to work!
I never heard of this spot then we went back into the office and it’s down the street. I tried an omelette 1 morning now im HOOKED everything ive had (all the omelettes at this point) has been great! The meatloaf oh don’t even talk about the yummy meatloaf with those hearty mashed potatoes🤤yum. Then the lady who works at the window/ counter I didn’t get her name but she is so pleasant and sweet i think it makes the food taste even better. I found me a new hometown fav. I hate they close at my lunch I would probably eat there 2x a day lol
When you visit this diner, don't go on Monday. And when you walk in, go to the left. Bailey is a fantastic server. She remembers our drink orders and has a very friendly demeanor. We always look forward to seeing her. The food is typical diner style food.
Small little place that you would just drive by and never see. Been there since the 80’s. When we walked in we were not only greeted by the staff, but by the patrons as well. 😃 It felt like a “Norm!” moment. Great fresh food. Great service. Highly recommend!
this place is wonderful. it’s a real southern diner. come here if you want fair, reasonable, prices. nothing fancy, like the more expensive yuppie places (which are good on their own way), but you’ll find good food, reasonable places, and a wonderful staff.
We drive across town just to come here. The food is always awesome and the service is always spectacular. We live the small town atmosphere. Makes us feel at home.
Charlie’s is a great place to eat and socialize. The front of house help is outstanding! Claude and the rest of the cooking crew do an outstanding job. The staff is friendly and the environment is inviting!
Always friendly service. Food is good and very reasonably priced. Nice variety of options on the menu with breakfast served all day.
It’s always nice to find a good local breakfast place! We didn’t have to wait long, and the food came quickly. Omelette was good, eggs were good, good coffee, and great wait staff, thanks Missy!
Missy was my server, very, very great demeanor and attitude. The food was yummy. Great little quaint diner. You don’t see me like these anymore.
Bailey was great. Food was good. Would be great to be able to get a Togo large drink after dining in.
These people are ALWAYS welcoming and the food is ALWAYS exactly what you ordered! It's a treat when I get the chance to come in. Nothing like a family atmosphere to get your day going.
Missy was a wonderful server! Charlie's Diner is a wonderful place to eat! I love the food and atmosphere! Vera is a wonderful server as well. My husband and I come here often.
The classic diner breakfast spot that I am glad is in the Phillips Sunbeam area! Portions are big. I have to ask for a Togo box every time. They offer great value at this mom and pop shop.
Vera, Bailey, and Missy take real good care of you. Service is quick and they are always in a good mood. Prices are reasonable and coffee is fresh and hot. Place is kept clean. Very nice locally owned and operated business.
This diner feels like a step back to simpler times. Homemade food is comforting, atmosphere is welcoming, and the service is great. Perfect spot for a classic diner experience
Really great food and friendly staff. The chicken tenders are hand breaded and delicious!
If your looking for a delicious family owned business to try out then you need to stop in Charlie’s diner! I’m a sucker for corn nuggets and these did not disappoint. I got a bacon egg and cheese pita and the eggs were cooked to perfection. They took the small diner feel and captured it perfectly with the atmosphere and everyone inside. 10/10 would stop in again. Plenty of parking and fresh made food with quick friendly service.
Had basic eggs, grits, toast, and corned beef hash. The coffee was good. The over-medium eggs were cooked perfectly. The corned beef hash was crispy. A large portion of grits, cooked properly and maybe had some extra butter? A very little salt and pepper and they were better than average. Nice quality seeded, marbled rye. I appreciated that. A lot of places have unseeded, bland rye.
Like Luke’s Diner meets Ted Lasso’s charm—warm, charming, and full of heart. We stumbled into this nostalgic gem on a recent trip to Jacksonville, and it felt like stepping into a scene from a cozy, favorite TV show. Think black-and-white checkered floors, vintage Coke bottles, and the kind of genuine hospitality that’s become far too rare. It had been a while since my husband and I have visited a true American diner, so we didn’t hold back—we got the omelette, biscuits and gravy, cheeseburger, and their creamy mac & cheese. Every bite was comfort food done right mixed with small-town warmth. In a world where polished chain restaurants are the norm, this mom-and-pop spot was a throwback dream. We’ll absolutely be back the next time we’re in town!
Had an amazing lunch today. This place has been on my list to try for a while. Charlie's Diner has old-school diner vibes with a checkerboard floor, red table tops, counter service, and a menu that is exactly what you'd expect. The staff is very friendly and attentive. There are a lot of options on the menu, but I knew I came for the fried pork chops and fried squash, so I ordered those with a side of rice and gravy. I'll start with my favorite, the fried yellow squash. This is something you don't often find in restaurants. Pieces were thick and huge. The batter was perfect and nicely seasoned. It did NOT even need the side of ranch that came with it. It was perfection. The pork chops were fried in the same batter as the squash. They were were tender and juicy on the inside and made my day. Rice and gravy were just what you'd expect from an old school diner. Really loved the gravy. This whole meal was just comfort food and reminded me of long ago family dinners. All in all, I'll be adding Charlie's Diner to my regular rotation. It's a taste of home and I loved everything about it.
We were looking for a unique place to have breakfast and this place checked all of our boxes! It was adorable, the service was top notch and friendly, and the food was delicious! The portions are generous! Every person who walked in seemed to know everyone else there, and it felt like a small town diner where it was a little family! If this was closer to home we would be here every day!
I ordered the Triple Decker Club with Fries for delivery at lunch time. Order came within time quoted, thank you. The sandwich was great. Exactly what I was craving. The wheat toast was excellent and I very much appreciated the fresh tomato. The bacon however could have been a little crisper in my opinion. But overall, a great lunch.
We must have driven past this little diner 100 times and at last decided to stop in for Breakfast at 10:00 am. Parking is plentiful more so in the rear so no problem. Walking through the door is like stepping back into the 50's. Old Rock & Roll softly played in the background and as you become accustomed to the sights and simple decor you are taken back in time to an old-fashioned diner. Pictures of Marilyn Monroe and other's from the past as well as an old fashion Jukebox tell you that this will be good. Our server Emily was spot on and attentive with our freshly made Decaf coffee and food orders so 5 🌟. Now as an FYI Charlie's is not open on Sundays and only serves breakfast and lunch but well worth it. I ordered the Sampler 2 eggs and assorted meats plus home fries and rye toast...came out perfectly except got 3 eggs...not a problem so 5 🌟. Bill ordered the meat lovers omelet, hash browns rye toast another 5 🌟 perfect large breakfast. Simply we loved the place, people, atmosphere and the food. Again it's a small place and easy to drive by but if you do worth making a U turn and return.
the best part the food.. Omg the food was on point very much like mom cooks it. We had a little problem with a omelette but the owner fixed it with out even saying anything. ( very impressive). I would recommend this place 100 %. The dinner was great you walk in the door and it’s a walk into the past. You get too sit yourself. I picked a spot that I could see the kitchen. The staff was very busy.. Atmosphere was so cools people all know each other and if they don’t you feel welcome... The sign was hard to find the way it’s positioned back a little. We had a great time here thank you for keeping the American dinner alive. Good luck on your new business...
First visit to this establishment. Arrived shortly after 10:30 a.m. Service was fast and friendly. Autumn checked on us several times throughout our meal. I had the BBQ burger w/onion rings. Healthy size serving. Rings are of good quality and quantity. Burger was good size. Just needed a little seasoning. My wife had a breakfast plate and was very satisfied. Stop in a pay Charlie's Diner a visit. Your stomach will be glad you did.
Solid diner food here. Nothing flashy or over the top. Not crazy expensive. Just some good food. I usually get the back cheese burger and it's not over crispy. The burger isn't overcooked and the fries are tasty. Will definitely come me back again
The server was very nice and our food was good. We did have to wait almost 45 minutes for a burger and sandwich. We will go back but only when we have time to kill and not starving. The prices were pretty good. This is like a mom and pop diner. We did like it though and will be back. There are only open for breakfast and lunch I believe.
The food came out hot and fresh. Bacon was cooked almost to much. Good customer service.
Good customer service. Home cooking type of food something on the menu for everyone
The food was hit or miss. I had the brisket as it was the daily special, but it was a very small portion and the flavor was lacking. Some of the other options looked much better though. Also, our waitress was very surly and complained about how busy it was despite only having 3 other small tables. Another nearby waitress seemed to be much more pleasant. I'd be willing to give them another shot as it looked like they could do much better with a different dish on a different day.
I got the. Hearty breakfast for $14 3 eggs 1 sausage Pattie 1 pancake 2 paper thin bacon strips not worth the price. My brother got the Philly cheese steak sandwich dry no flavor. It's hot outside their ac didn't seem like it was working . My dad got the shrimp basket. We got 3 teas. The total price $49.50. I was not pleased with the meal I had hearty breakfast
I have written a previous positive review about this restaurant, and though I still like it, I just want to state a complaint about what happened yesterday. my husband and I went there around 11:15 and it was actually fairly busy, and they told us to go ahead and seat ourselves. We sat down at a table and were basically ignored by the servers and, I’m not sure if she was a busser or what, but we were ignored by her too. And I understand there were a lot of tables there and it looked pretty busy, but I think the worst was when another couple came in and sat down and within a few minutes the one possible busser lady or whoever she was ran over and gave them menus and we hadn’t even been acknowledged yet. We waited a few more minutes and nobody even looked our way so we left upset On the weekends this place is always been awesome, I guess we’ll know better than to go on a weekday because it was not good at all!
Tried to order a few items on the menu and they weren’t available. Went for the variety of the menu and having 4 children with us with all different taste. Waitress was very nice but food wasn’t really that great. Chicken salad was the best out of the 5 dishes we got (chicken wrap, chicken salad sandwich, chicken tenders, burger and loaded fries with chicken and bacon)
Let me start by saying I had been a regular customer here since the Tombo's days, and even into the early part of the Charlie's Diner era, this was a hidden gem in Jacksonville of quality country cooking, well-seasoned food and generous portions. Sadly, that era appears to be long gone with the most recent ownership change. Tiny portions of totally unseasoned, bland, industrial Sysco can of sadness fare have become the norm and what I was served today was a pale, pale shadow of the quality that this place used to represent, and this was by a long, LONG way the worst meal I've ever had here, and will almost assuredly be my last until their inevitable and looming closing hopefully brings new ownership that actually cares and wants to return this once bright culinary spot to its former glory. I ordered a dish I've had here and enjoyed in the past, a simple hamburger steak with onions and gravy with sides of red beans and rice and a side of lima beans. What I was actually served bore ZERO resemblance to the dish I had before, both in portion and flavor. I was brought a sad little "hamburger steak" that was roughly the size of a Big Mac patty, bland, unseasoned and with a strange, and not in a good way flavor. The onions were grilled onions, ok, but again, lacking seasoning, which was a theme that continued with the gravy, bland, flavorless goop that at least served as lube to get the... "steak" down and somewhat mask its unfortunate flavor, had I not been absolutely famished having skipped breakfast, I would've just sent it back, but managed to power through it after raining DESPERATELY-needed salt and pepper all over it. The sides were even worse, at this point I should probably mention that I'm Cajun, raised on EPIC red beans & rice every Monday, made by my AWESOME Cajun cook Paw-paw, who had a very successful food truck business on the Mississippi Gulf Coast back in the 80s, long before food trucks became as popular and prolific as they are today. Now I never expected these red beans to compare with his, made with real andouille sausage and tasso ham, but I've had them here before, and they were actually pretty decent, and they even came with smoked sausage in them, not bad at all, but what they brought out to me today was obviously a can of industrial sadness, corporate Sysco kidney beans with no detectable seasoning whatsoever, poured over what tasted like boil in the bag minute rice. Again, NOT good. If you're picking up on the theme here, the limas were exactly the same, ZERO detectable seasoning or flavor, CLEARLY just warmed up from a can. No meat of any type to help flavor them, no onions I could detect, just beans and bean water. GROSS. I'm actually seriously saddened to see what has become of one of my former favorite lunch spots in Jacksonville, but THAT garbage was one of the worst meals I've been served at a restaurant in recent memory, and again, a pale, pale shadow of the place it used to be. To the ownership, if you should happen to read this, I would suggest watching a few episodes of Gordon Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares, where he goes in to try and save failing restaurants and see if the first few minutes remind you of anything, because every single episode starts with EXACTLY what I saw today, a formerly popular, successful restaurant where someone's gone in, went cheap and let their food go to absolute HELL while six elderly customers collect dust waiting for their bland, flavorless, heartless food to arrive. I'm not sure he's still filming that show or I would nominate you for it, you'd be the perfect fit! Diminishing portions, diminishing flavor = diminishing customer base and profit, EVERY time. All you have to do to fix this is simply go back to what made the old restaurant a success in the first place, and quit being cheap and uncaring about the quality of the food you serve, it really is THAT simple. Otherwise, and I forsee this happening sooner than later, you WILL kill this restaurant and be out of business, BANK on it!
Very pleasant staff especially the waitress but the food was not good at all. I ordered a salad with grilled chicken. I had to wait quite some time for the salad to come. The chicken was not smelling so good and once I start mixing the salad a dead fly appeared in there. I said whatever and start mixing again but it was crazy when I found a lot of lettuce that were full of dirt and I believe they were not even washed. Who ever cooks there is very bad. I had to return the food and just leave.
Service was very slow. My husband ordered pork chop dinner. They were the worst pork chops he had ever had. So over cooked you could not cut them with a knife. We will not be back!
Tried today with friends as a new place to eat. I was sorely disappointed. I ordered the 3 chicken tenders with 2 sides. It was described on the menu as "Buffalo or plain/grilled or fried." I asked for fried and buffalo. What I got was cut up chicken smothered with onions and peppers with what may have been buffalo sauce. Being what I thought every red-blooded American is like, I expected whole chicken tenders, with breading and deep-fried. When I asked the waitress about it, she told me it was fried. Not worth an argument, but she was incorrect. $14 lesson for me to learn I will not go back.
