Incredible french dip and chili! This restaurant has a decidedly upscale feel and service to match. Our server (Oliver) was also the bartender and his recommendations and service were spot on! The French dip is one of the best i have had in a long time, tender perfectly *medium rare* shaved beef with a jus that was flavorful and not overly salty. The crusty roll held up well to the dip, and the accompanying horseradish was creamy and made the sandwich complete! We also were huge fans of the chili, a rare treat to find in SFO.. and it was meaty and flavorful, served with tortilla chips. Last but not least, the spaghetti squash with crimini mushrooms, parmesan and golden raisins was an excellent side in lieu of fries. Dog friendly outdoors for bonus points!
Hillstone is Hillstone! Always great food and good service. If you are in the city you must try! I always make a reservation because I know how busy they can get and wait times are long. But if you have to wait it really is worth it! I never have any complaints every time we come service is always fast and you get your food quick! Love it!
Food? 5 stars. Drinks? 5 stars. Ambiance? 5 stars. Them asking my friend who momentarily flipped his hat to the back to more accurately see the menu to turn it around or remove it? Wackness. But I get it.
I’ve been to MANY Hillstone locations. Some that no longer operate like Bandera in Chicago🥺 No matter where you are, Hillstone always delivers. Their standard of service is hard to beat. The San Francisco location is no exception. This location wonderfully represents the brand and upholds its reputation. You cannot go wrong with the menu, no matter what mood you’re in.
Hillstone San Francisco is exactly why I’ll always ride for Hillstone as one of the most consistently excellent restaurant groups in the country. You walk in knowing you’re going to get a great meal, and this location delivered in a big way. The chicken sandwich and the french dip were out of this world, like “why am I not ordering this every week?” level. The spinach artichoke dip was ridiculously good, and the burger was perfect too, cooked right, super flavorful, just classic done the right way. Service was fantastic from start to finish, attentive without hovering and everything came out exactly how it should. If you want a guaranteed win in San Francisco, this is it.
Consistently outstanding—every visit. I’ve never experienced service quite like this, including the thoughtful touch of transferring my martini into a freshly chilled glass halfway through. Impeccable service, delicious food, and truly exceptional crab cakes—the best we’ve ever had.
Absolutely love this place. Hillstone Restaurants never disappoints. I stopped in for a late lunch on Tuesday, December 30th, before catching the train back to San Ramon, and it was the perfect way to wrap up the day. I grabbed a seat at the bar and ordered the French Dip with a draft Kölsch. The French Dip was outstanding. It was tender, flavorful, and exactly what you want from a classic. Paired with the crisp Kölsch, it made for a seriously satisfying meal. The service at the bar was top-notch. I didn’t catch anyone’s name, but the team was attentive, friendly, and perfectly paced never hovering, never absent. It’s rare to feel that well taken care of during a quick solo meal, but they nailed it. Consistently great food, polished service, and a comfortable atmosphere. Hillstone is always a win, and I’ll definitely be back.
This and Foxcity were two twins on the waterfront. Too bad Foxcity closed last year. These are great places for comfort food during the winter, and the place is always busy. The staff always seems happy and occupied. Very popular among tourists and locals alike.
Absolutely wonderful staff. Attentive, caring and professional. Beef ribs were incredible, as was the shipping cocktail and burger. Highly recommend stopping in here for an unforgettable meal. We live in Bangkok, and so our expectations for food are high. This was on point.
Lovely restaurant with an upscale vibe and menu, perfect for the area. With so many touristy restaurants it was so nice to find something a level above. In my humble opinion, any restaurant that has a dedicated expeditor is a cut above the rest! The wait was about 45 minutes for a table so we scooted into a couple bar seats and enjoyed the show! It's quite the diversified crowd, at let it was the night we were there! Service was a bit discombobulated but I suppose that added a little bit of flavor to the experience! Every single staff member we encountered was genuine, friendly and welcoming. We had the artichoke dip for appetizer and it came out quickly, piping hot with fresh tortilla chips and a wonderful addition of salsa and sour cream! Weird but welcomed! Hubby had the flat iron steak, medium temperature and substituted mashed potatoes. He said it was amazing and it must have been, it was gone in a flash! I had the ribs with substituted mashed potatoes and boy oh boy, those ribs were worth their weight in gold! Fall off the bone tender, not too much sauce, a nice seasoning and lots of them! We had a great experience and will definitely return!
Great place, outstanding service. The waiters were excellent, and the food was delicious. One of the best steaks I’ve ever had. The atmosphere is wonderful! I loved absolutely everything. Definitely recommend it.
I’ve had the pleasure of dining here multiple times a month over a lot of years, and I typically sit at the bar where I’m always well taken care of, especially by Joe and Paige. The food is consistently excellent, and the service never disappoints. I’m always torn between ordering the BBQ ribs or the Hawaiian ribeye—both are so good
Hands down best kale salad ive ever had. I always look for a hillstone and the consistency of the kale salad stays! This particular location has the most expensive one coming in at $30+ tip however I only get it as a treat every now and then so its worth it!
Not cheap but a great grownup sit down restaurant. I had an excellent two rib pork chop, mashed potatoes, and braised cabbage for lunch. And a tall glass of full strength iced tea. So so good. Before meal asked for the heated towels, a civilized way to prep for lunch. Service was excellent. Atmosphere dim, calm, and serene. Recommended.

I've been here so many times, and I absolutely love this place! The service is top-notch every time, the ambiance is wonderful, and the food is fantastic. I have a ton of favorites here, including the barbecue ribs, French dip Au Jud, Macho salad, clam chowder, and their Sunday specials. Bar service was sub-par. Another patron had to summon the bartender by name to even get a water and a menu. Then another bartender had to remind her to come back and take my drink order. She asked "doing alright over here?" As I sat with my hands crossed over my menu silently begging anyone to come take my order. Weird. Lots of other bars have much warmer service. Great Caesar salad though!
Service was lovely, shoutout to Nils for being an amazing waiter! The chicken sandwich’s tomato and cheese were a nice addition, but the greens were honestly disgusting. Key lime pie was delicious.
We shared a Caesar salad as an entree, along with a flat iron steak and a cheeseburger. The food was good overall. The steak was soft but not outstanding, while the cheeseburger was tasty and came in a big portion. The outside seating was very nice and we really enjoyed it. Service was very good.

We made a quick stop at Hillstone for lunch. We didn’t have any wait and were seated quickly and with the rush it just felt that at times we were forgotten. We even ended up with the wrong check at the end of the night but the chef came personally to rectify that which was kind of him. The food was pretty good. The chicken sandwich was very flavorful though I wish the cheese didn’t feel like it had just come out the refrigerator a minute ago. The burger was done well. The fries were the best part. I was miffed that the two cokes were the same price but for different sized bottles. Definitely a nice place to stop by if you are in the area and hungry.
The two drinks by the bar were expensive. $20 dollars a drink and it was good but it could have been better, I would prefer a big rock not ice cubes:. The food was great, the service was almost perfect but server forgot my champagne. Overall good but a little expensive for drinks and hamburgers.
It's not too bad for a meal before hopping on a boat at the pier. It moved pretty fast, and people didn't stay and eat for very long. One thing I observed about the staff was their system. Everyone was always doing something. Nobody was running around frantic or like they were overwhelmed. It was nice to see how much management values efficiency. The server forgot multiple things, and he had to keep coming back. Very rarely is something like that a consistent thing at a restaurant. My favorite part of this place were the pictures of the popcorn kernels on the wall to the bathrooms. Now, those were cool to look at. I took a picture of the spookier-looking ones. The burger was not that good. They used pre-cut shredded lettuce. I would have preferred fresh leafed lettuce. They chopped the onions, too, which I'm not much of a fan of on a burger. The fries were basic and were definitely not fresh, but frozen. It felt like key ingredients, while paying for a high-priced item, would be of better quality. I was disappointed in that experience. Unfortunately, there was an emergency that required medical transport, so I was distracted and didn't get a picture of the burger.

There were three of us, and we got the ribs and two Hawaiian ribeye steaks. The ribs were burnt, so we sent them back (tasted like charcoal). We asked for medium-rare steaks, but they were more like medium-well (dry, like well-done). The starters were just okay. Artichoke dip was the dish that stood out. Honestly, the food wasn't great. But the service? That was awesome! Super fast and cheerful, which really made up for the food. Thanks, Mr. Waiter (sorry I forgot your name). We didn't take many pics except for the burnt ribs and dry steak, even though it doesn't really show in the photo (we tasted it though!). Oh, almost forgot, they have no toothpicks 🤣
