Everything exceeded our expectations! Delicious food, well seasoned, not too salty, tender oxtails & jerk chicken, pepper pot soup, cornbread surprisingly like homemade bread, ripe plantain, ginger beer not too sweet. Place was empty, and we hesitated to go in based on outdated reviews, but it filled up after we entered. We are glad we ate here and will be back. Friendly service! Comfortable atmosphere.
From the moment we were greeted until the moment we left, the team here took great care of our party. Located in a busy downtown area there was ample parking in the lot across the street in addition to the street. Indoor and outdoor seating available. The food is spicy, flavorful and yummy! Each person in our party enjoyed their selection. Served at the perfect temperature, each entree exploded with flavors. The oxtails? Divine. Chef’s kiss. This is definitely a new favorite.
Stumbled upon this little gem; the food was delicious and super flavorful! My husband and I visit Jamaica often and the oxtails and beef patties were spot on! Service was delightful as there was no wait (on a Saturday afternoon) and we were greeted with smiles from everyone. This place will definitely be our "go-to" when I'm Palo Alto!
A hidden gem in Palo Alto! Food is great, tastes better than it looks. Jerk chicken wings have a spicy taste to it. Our server recommended braised oxtail. It was delicious! They also recommended collard greens. It’s a boiled and salted green leaves. Which was good but nothing fancy about it. Sweet potato pudding is actually a cake base with a scoop of ice cream on top. It was too sweet for me. Atmosphere is not fancy or anything like that. Good for friends gatherings and casual dining.
The food was absolutely delicious! As a regular consumer of Caribbean cuisine, I came in with my expectations in check—but I was pleasantly surprised. The portions were generous (I went for lunch and ended up skipping dinner). The subtle hint of coconut in the rice truly made my day and the curry goat was one of the best I’ve had in a long time—yes, I said it! The service was decent; although our orders got mixed up, the staff were very friendly and apologetic, which made up for it. Overall, a fantastic experience that I’ll definitely be coming back for.
They serve some darn good food. Ordered the oxtail and chicken combo and everything was cooked to perfection. Oxtail fell right off the bones and the chicken was super flavourful. Service here is going to knock a star off though. It looks like there's a decent amount of staff, but no one seems to know what they're doing. Took forever just to get seated! How is there not someone at the front to help seat customers?? Would still recommend trying this place out at least once. Pretty empty if you're here earlier in the evening, but can fill up.
Good experience overall! Came for dinner on a Saturday night - the place wasn’t very full but it still took a while for us (party of 2) to get seated. Despite that, the waiters were extremely kind and courteous and made us feel very comfortable. We ordered the jerk chicken and oxtail combo plate as well as the coconut shrimp appetizer - for 2 people, this was more than enough food. The combo plate was supposed to come with plantains but they forgot to include them - however when we asked the waiter, she kindly brought them out to us. The chicken oxtail plate was very well seasoned and delicious. The chicken was a little undercooked but not a big problem. Coconut shrimp was okay, a bit small in size, so probably would not order again. For dessert, we ordered the sweet potato pudding. It was quite appetizing but a bit too sweet - would’ve been perfect with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Overall a great place for delicious and flavorful food!
Food was very tasty. We shared the coconut shrimp, plating was lackluster. I had the combo curry shrimp and jerk chicken, it was delicious! Also the plantains that come with the meal are sooo good! Service was super friendly but slow to get us our drinks and bill. The restaurant is eclectic but needed a bit of cleaning. The table next to was was not being used but was dirty and not wiped down and I couldn’t use the appetizer plate because it was also dirty. All in all we had a good dinner and the flavors outweigh the other mishaps. Will definitely come back again.
Went here for an early dinner. The restaurant has ample indoor and outdoor seating. There are interesting drinks and a good selection of Caribbean dishes. The goat curry was tasty and the ribs were a child favorite. The jerk chicken was just ok and the meal took a long time, even getting the drinks and bill.
The cashier closed my tab without offering me a receipt. I had to ask for a receipt. He told me my total was $22. However when he gave me separate receipts for the TWO items I ordered he shorted me 23cents. I understand it isn’t a lot but be watchful when paying for your food. I gave $30 cash and only received $8 back.
Some friends recommended the food from this place a while ago so we finally came to give it a try. A waitress led us to some outdoor seating, but after sitting for a while someone else came over to tell us that the table was actually dirty and she wiped it for us (very nice of her, but we had so many questions🤔). We then waited for another 30 minutes for someone to finally take our order. Apparently the person that was supposed to be in charge of our table didn’t want to do that🤷🏻♀️ so someone else that felt bad for us was kind enough to come over and take our order. We then waited for another 20 minutes for the food to finally arrive. Everything seemed to take so long that at some point we were honestly thinking about just leaving😫. As it got late, the temperature got lower, as it always does on a February evening in Palo Alto. We asked if we could have the outdoor heaters turned on so we wouldn’t be freezing outside🥶. We were told that they were out of gas and there’s no way for them to turn on the heater. Luckily we survived through this because the food was kind of spicy and that definitely helped us stay warm. The lights outside were just some patio string lights, not super bright. Might be good for drinks but if you’re having a meal you might not want to sit outside after it gets dark. The other table was literally eating with their phone flashlights🔦 so they could see what was in their plates. Shivering in the coldness and darkness🫠. Overall the food was okay (I also don’t know what authentic Caribbean food is supposed to be like, would be inappropriate for me to comment on the authenticity) and the portion was pretty big, but the entire experience was not so good and service could definitely be improved🙃.
Very slow service, had to wait for more than 20minutes just to get seated. Once we were seated, they took 10-15minutes just to get water and then take our order. I’m a vegetarian and ordered coconut curry tofu. The tofu was so bland and curry was very spicy. It almost tasted like Thai food and not Jamaican. Portion size was huge but food not up to the hype at all. I liked their buttermilk cornbread and I would recommend that
I’d been to Coconuts a few times in person and usually food was good but service was slow. However, I ordered via Doordash for the first time this weekend (dark meat jerk chicken and cornbread) and got food poisoning. I am sure it was Coconuts because it was the only thing I ate that day. I am also pretty sure they are deleting my DoorDash reviews. DO NOT EAT HERE.
I knew this place wasn’t going to be good as soon as I opened the door. 🚩red flag #1 - I couldn’t hear the music from the outside. Anyone who has ever been to an authentic Caribbean or Jamaican restaurant knows that the music will be blasting. 🚩red flag #2 - When I stepped into the restaurant I didn’t smell anything. No spices, no fried festival, nada. 🚩red flag #3 - There wasn’t a Caribbean person insight, including in the kitchen!! How sway?! Review: Even with all of the red flags staring me in the face, I stayed. After a long day at work I didn’t have the energy to figure out another option. Plus I’ve had this place bookmarked for a while. Anywho, I was seated toward the back of an empty restaurant by a waiter who was clearly distracted. I started with a drink, a non-alch mango mojito. He brought out the mojito which should include club soda. It was flat and tasteless. So I sent it back and asked for a ginger beer. Which I figured would be a safe bet since it’s usually in a can or bottle. Again, I’m brought what I assume is watered down ginger juice with no carbonation. I then ordered the sampler platter which includes: - Jerk chicken: dry AND too spicy to eat (pick a struggle) - Coconut shrimp: okay, nothing to write home about - A pattie: I ordered a chicken patty (specified 3 times) and got veggie, it was decent - Crispy pork: best thing on the plate I also ordered the oxtail (the most reviewed item) and coco bread. The oxtail was so fatty I couldn’t get past the second piece. It was literally making me sick. The bread was cool. All in all I wouldn’t suggest this place. But I guess it’s the best you can get in Palo Alto. If you want some authentic and delicious Caribbean/ Jamaican food you’ll need to make your way to the East Bay for Sweet Fingers or Mintos.
