Barbacoa is praised for its old-school New York vibe, attentive staff (especially Maria), and excellent food. The T-bone steak is a standout, often large enough to share. Some found the service slow or the air conditioning inadequate.

One of the best restaurants in the village. I grew up going to this restaurant from when I was a child. I love the atmosphere and the music they have playing certain nights. The food is very good too. I don't understand some of the negative reviews about pricing. I'm a native New Yorker and almost every food joint is expensive today especially in certain areas of Manhattan let's be real. And most places eventually go under if they don't change high enough thanks to landlords hiking stuff up way too fast. The service has always been good too. Even if I didn't have a reservation they have always got a table pretty quickly even if the restaurant was almost full. I highly recommended!!
Couldn't love this place more - the welcoming vibe, old school feel, genuinely kind and attentive staff, and outstanding food. Greeted warmly at the door, seated at an awesome table, and served throughout the night by tremendous waiters and waitresses. Drinks were good, appetizers were great, but the t-bone steak (for 4!) was the star of the show. Chocolate souffle also top notch - you couldn't find a better one in France if you tried. Absolutely loved our dinner from start to finish.
Very nice meal! Our server, Maria was wonderful, the right mix of professional, friendly and attentive without being interruptive. The food - aside from the skin on a baked potato being to blackened to eat - was wonderful. The manager(?) had “words” with one of the staff in the dining room, clearly souring the rooms atmosphere a bit, but the staff continued to take care of the room professionally. All in all a very nice meal. (And I didn't need to eat the potato skin anyway!🙂)
This place is a delight. Very cool and moody inside, feels both cozy and comforting and also like some dramatic dinner would happen there in some show like the sopranos. When we went we weren't hungry enough for dessert but rest assured we'll be back because my god everything was great and I'm sure the good times only get better. I got the salmon, which was fabulous, again with the salmon in this town, it's never let me down. We split a Caesar and that was enough with the fabulous bread selection which included as a suprise the BEST cornbread I think I've ever had. Oh my lord. I'm gonna have to find out if they sell it separately, because I would buy a weekly loaf of that golden fabulous dream bread. I forget the name of our waiter but he had red hair and he was a wonderful time and answered all of my father's random assortments of questions. Just a gem. We can't wait to go back.
Went here to celebrate Lou's birthday. We had a fantastic time. The server treated us like family, the vibe feels like historic NYC, the food is well worth the price. Our table ordered the classic knickerbocker 28 ounce steaks to share (with baked potato, mash potato and creamed spinach), tuna plates and off menu meatloaf special . We also had calamari, beet salad, cornbread and caviar pie appetizers. Everything was thoughtfully prepared and plated. I would love to come back on a jazz performance night. Highly recommend this place and well worth the price, especially for a special occasion.
This classic, old New York - where the real New Yorkers go - steakhouse is supreme! The best! A classic dining hall with the absolute best service. Just an old school top waiters and service period full stop. The walls are covered in paintings and signed New Yorker cartoons. There's a piano covered with bottles of booze. The food is tremendous, just top shelf quality everything. My gut was bursting at the seams as I walked out content and spontaneously breaking out into song. Thank you Knickerbocker for this wonderful Christmas experience
Oh…my…gosh. I literally just left and said I need to do a review ASAP… the place was so good! The T-bone steak was so good and the sides and fried onions rings. It was big enough to feed 2-3. I ate it by myself. Its priced so well, I def wouldn’t mind paying more if they upped the price. That’s how good it was. The drinks were STRONG and good. I can’t wait to come back when I visit New York again. I would pick this place over any other place for a good steak. When I come back I’m definitely trying other things on the menu so I can try everything! It’s worth it! Also I would like to say The staff was excellent, from the hostess to the waiter to the bar tender! Love everything about this place!
Shrimp cocktail: 3/5 Served in a martini glass with a layer of sauce at the bottom and blue tortilla chips on the plate. Shrimp were fresh and tender; cocktail sauce was tangy with a hint of fruitiness. Paired with a dirty martini (gin = Hendrick’s), which fit the vibe perfectly. We booked an 8:45 reservation to catch the jazz duo and were happy to be seated near the piano. Also ordered: T-bone for one with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach, spaghetti, chocolate chip cookie for two with ice cream, and bottle of Tuscan wine. Tables are well spaced and comfortable. Excellent food and service overall!
I was seated near the bar area on Thanksgiving at about 5:15 PM and saw an elderly lady enter with 2 others. She was seated very close to the door in the front and I heard her tell the maitre d she was cold because of the door constantly opening near her seat. The maitre d refused to seat her towards the back in a warmer area even after she said she had some health issues and the cold air was bothering her and making her uncomfortable. He finally agreed to move the party over one table, still in an area close to the front and the steady opening door. Seniors should be accommodated, I believe it is THE LAW. I hope she sees this and replies.
The company was excellent, the cocktails pretty solid! Liked the food too but found the service a little slow even though the restaurant wasn’t too busy. The air conditioning seemed to be struggling too so we were a little warm too. NTL, we’d go again and see if we might have just had an off night!
This place was good. To start we had the French onion soup and the ceasar salad. Fair warning: the Ceasar has actual pieces of anchovies on it. For the mains, I ordered the petit filet mignon with fries and truffle butter. Everything was good, I wasn't blown away with flavor but it was good. They also have a person playing the piano at 9pm which was nice during dinner. If you're looking for really good cocktails though, this is not the place. I ordered a cocktail and it was not balanced, it was WAY too strong and made me feel sick after two sips.
We've been coming here since the early 1990's and it's one of the last archetypical New York "steakhouses". Live jazz, good food, East Village location, people who know your name, familiar (as in yummy) food, strong drinks, a solid wine list that's not ostentatious and John who can grant you a prime table on a Saturday night at 8pm. The old Gotham Bar and Grill is no longer, Ray's Pizza is long gone, Balducci's a distant memory, Dallas BBQ - who?, 1/5 Steakhouse, B Daltons, the Olive Tree Cafe, Figaro's and the Rocky Horror Picture Show during 8th Street's heyday as one of the most popular streets in NYC are pure nostalgia, but the Knickerbocker lives on in person, unchanged. Thank you John and Craig for the easy evening. Good food, good wine, good times here.
Walked in for a glass of wine at the bar, lady gave me the bottom of the bottle, didn't let me try it , she would squeeze the last drop of it if she could, while the white gentleman next to me been nicely asked to try test his Cabernet. Went to restroom came back asked for a beer, because I personally never drink the last glass when I go out ( I don't know how long that bottle been open for , how much air got it, simply the wine test different). After I been outside for a smoke I came to the bar to see they took my drink and a guy named simply *John* asked me to leave the place because they no longer want to serve me. Why? NO Answer! I think they don't like people with a beard and no mustache so for me It's simple A VERY RACIST PLACE that claim to be what they will never be! I been traveling for long time and this NEVER happend to me. Been RACIALLY PROFILED and KICKED OUT ON A FRIDAY NIGHT IN FRONT OF FAMILYS having dinner you should be ASHAMED!!!!! Ain't no place for this kind of action in 2025 in NYC I wish your business go like how you made me feel that night!
I had an extremely disappointing experience at this restaurant that felt discriminatory and unwelcoming. When we were finally seated, our server made it very clear that if every person at the table did not order a full entrée, we “shouldn’t have been seated in the first place.” This policy was never communicated upfront, and the tone in which it was delivered was dismissive and embarrassing. Dining out is supposed to be an inclusive and enjoyable experience, but we were made to feel unwelcome and singled out. It is unacceptable to treat paying customers this way. I hope management takes this feedback seriously, because no one should leave a restaurant feeling disrespected or discriminated against.
