The specials are always delightful, as are the regulars. This is great straight ahead sushi. They don't go all in with all the gushy mayonnaise sauces. Just good fish, with sensible pairings.
Always fresh and always so good! Have always loved any roll we've tried there, and the sunomono salad is the best we've had in the north state! Love trips to the coast and we always try to fit a meal in here while we're at it!
Ive been going to this restaurant for at least 15 years. This is my current favorite sushi place in Humboldt. It's ALWAYS done right. They have a wide variety and its always been fresh. Never sloppy. They can get very busy on the weekends though, just a heads up. Try to come before 6pm to get a table
I've been eating here for 17 yrs. It's always good. I travel and rarely find such delightful sushi and Japanese cuisine. Never do I tire of it. So come enjoy excellent food, happy atmosphere and great service. Gluten free recognized and handled well.
Super yummy ! Fresh sushi - albacore oh my goodness and incredible salad The miso soup is superb Katsu was off the hook too! And the cocktails were simply lovely Ordered to go on second night on the way to concert -perfectly packed and great hand rolls Always try to stop by when coming through town -such a treat ! In the first floor of the Hotel Arcata Best part is the good vibes - restaurant is operated by a long time Jerry Garcia fan a there is even a photo of Jerry in their window ! We are everywhere ✨🤘🏽
They used to serve the smoked salmon with sushi rice. Was absolutely my favorite. The unagi is killer. The rolls are very fresh and high quality, if you have high expectations then this is the best spot I have EVER been to. I love the smoke they infuse into the food. Good selection of beers and wine. I bought a whole bottle of wine, uh huh. Not a big fan of Katsu, you know its fried. The oyster shooter was awesome, very citrus forward and when I went it was a very creamy, almost nutty sauce. It was amazing. Gyoza is authentic, good quality. The Ling Cod was kind of a cool thing to eat, if you like cooked fish its not fishy or anything. The sushi and sashimi is the best I've had though. Way better than the other spots in town. No dried fish flavor or old avocado or greasy mushy tempura. Super cool bar areas. Great Atmosphere.
Best Asian food I’ve ever had. The staff is great and friendly and down to earth. The staff is clearly family with one another. The boss is great and kind. One time the boss paid for me and my friend’s meal. No charge at all. Everything about this place is great. Definitely a place to stop by in Northern California.
Absolutely delishes food. My husband and I typically get the tempura combination boxes and a shrimp tempura roll. The teriyaki is incredibly flavorful, and they provide a great serving size. We love this place and are so happy to have found it! Tomo is our go to place for a special date night and any big celebration 🍾 full bar, great food and drinks- can't go wrong!
I love their cuts! The food always tastes great and is consistent! They have a full bar too! Arcata gem!
I had forgotten how good they are! A friend and I shared the $49.00 dinner for 2. We had so much that we had a full dinner the next day! Very tasty! The service was excellent. Definitely a place to start going on a regular basis!
Been eating sushi here with friends for over 20 years. Great place for a large gathering of friends.
This is a lively place, with an extensive selection to choose from of some of the best sushi we have ever eaten. They serve cocktails as well, so it is not your traditional Japanese restaurant, but with a college town twist. The atmosphere is louder but not out of hand. It is expensive but you get what you pay for.
The sushi was delectable and the staff was friendly. They had a vegan noodle bowl as a special that my lady friend went head over heals for. I have to agree that it was quite tasty.
Whenever I come back to Humboldt, Tomo is always on the list for dinner. The food is consistently fresh and delicious. Reasonably priced and a comfortable experience for a relaxing dinner.
So good that we had to go back the second night in a row. The food is AMAZING, portions are great and the value is unbeatable - this is like pre-covid pricing.
Tomo Japanese Restaurant in Arcata, California, is my ultimate happy hour spot. Tucked away in town, it's a haven for delicious Japanese cuisine and unbeatable deals. During happy hour, Tomo's menu shines with tempting offerings, including my personal favorite, the "Humboldt Hunny" roll. It's a burst of flavor that keeps me coming back for more. What sets Tomo apart is their attention to every detail, including catering to dietary preferences like offering a vegetarian miso soup—an uncommon find in town. The service, led by stellar staff like Melisha, is consistently excellent, adding a personalized touch to every visit. Tomo Japanese Restaurant is a must-visit in Arcata for its delightful happy hour, flavorful dishes, and exceptional service. Don't miss out on this local gem!
Excellent restaurant! The pork Gyoza was light and delicious and had a wonderful sauce. The #1 specialty roll was phenomenal. The nigiri had maybe a little too much rice for my preference, but the fish was high quality. Overall I loved this place and our server, Braelyn, was so nice and helpful.
What a wonderful restaurant! I highly recommend the combination with sushi. I had the ling cod and larrapin station roll. Both were absolutely delicious! Also recommend the oyster shooters and sake colada.
Delicious and filling katsu and well thought out sushi with unique and tasty flavors. Thanks for a great meal!
It was very good. The place is nice and the service is friendly and the food was great. Excellent for the price. We'll definitely be back.
If the photo below doesn't encourage you to try this place out, if you haven't already, bless your soul. I have never been disappointed by Tomo's service, rolls, and delivery of food items. Everything I've tried here is made with detail and so much flavor! Please be adventurous when going here. You won't be disappointed!
Great Japanese food at a good price. Well staffed good service.
Sam was excellent for our server. She is prompt and thorough. The tiger roll is bomb.
I went to this restaurant on a solo vacation trip, and had an absolute amazing time. The drinks were amazing, the service was top notch, and the food was Fantastic. They had the best Miso Soup I have ever had at any restaurant ever, and I had asked for a second bowl, praising it. The owner came by and gave me a third bowl of Miso Soup on the house, saying that was the best compliment they've gotten on it. At the end, I had eaten so much I couldn't finish my entree and had to take it to go. I loved my experience so much I had to buy a shirt, and spoke to the owner for a while about my trip. Overall, I had the best eating experience during my trip at this restaurant, and look forward to coming back again at some point in the future 😁
The food was great, and not too expensive, especially during happy hour. I'm always happy to see sushi restaurants offer a variety of vegetarian sushi options. The only thing that could be improved is maybe little markers to indicate vegetarian options, especially for sushi, since it could be a little tricky to decipher.
Nice and super attentive servers. Good food. The tofu teriyaki is a bit sweet, but the texture is very interesting, I've never had tofu made like that anywhere else. My dinner bento box comes with a spicy tofu roll which tastes amazing, and a salad which is supposed to have shrimps but they skipped it even though I didn't even ask. I guess they figured that out themselves because I ordered all vegetarian items. They sat us right next to the fish tank because I took a picture of it first thing when we walked in. I love it when people detect these subtleties. The bathroom is shared with a hotel, clean and well stocked, and it requires a code to enter.

Delicious. Go to for happy hour. Yum!
Great place. I sat at the bar, which was a little tight, but met some great people while there. I only tried a few specialty roll, they were delicious. My only complaint would be the rolls are a bit thinner compared to most other sushi restaurants. But I still had a wonderful experience.
Tomo is a legend! We go here to regroup and vibe out with all the amazing staff. Consistently delicious! Soul filled. Thank you, Tomo!

Great plant-based options! Not a fan of the cocktails as they seemed a little weak, but the food and service made up for it. Our waitress recommended a tasty tempura yam w strawberry roll for dessert.
Great local sushi spot! Full bar. Large dining space. Not only is their food delicious, but their presentation is on point too! I also appreciate that their tables are spread out a good distance during Covid and staff members wear masks. They get busy, so plan accordingly.
Food was amazing and a great family setting. Our server Echo was on point! She made some suggestions that my lady and I thoroughly enjoyed. We will definitely be back with the type of service and food Tomo had to offer. Thanks again Echo!!
We went during their happy hour and I must say that, though expensive for small portions, their happy hour appetizers are DELICIOUS! Their chicken was so perfect and they had actual karaage! Super light and crispy. I was a little sad by the lack of variety, it felt like, from their sushi menu. Especially as someone who is practically obsessed with unagi. I must say though, every fish/meat that we got was cooked absolutely flawlessly. Perfectly done. And they have ramune!!
They have a great happy hour. Watch out and see if the chicken is cooked thoroughly. Sometimes, they cook too fast. Overall, the rolls are delicious
My salmon teriyaki was well executed, rich in flavor. The restaurant decor and atmosphere wasn’t inviting and with flies hovering around, it didn’t feel clean. Men’s urinals which being to the hotel have no privacy at all. Overall the whole experience was underwhelming besides my dish.
Our server, Luis, was fantastic, but the place is clearly understaffed. The wait times to order and receive food were long. However, the the food was great and very well priced. For appetizers, we ordered fried scallops and rainbow poké. Both were good, poké was better. For rolls, we ordered #4, #7, and the special Coco cabana roll. All were good but the special rolls was by far the best. Worth noting, most rolls were cooked opposed to raw, might be a common for the area.
The place is quite loud when full. Make sure to make a reservation. The food was okay, not the best miso soup I ever had and not the best katsu chicken I ever had. I can't believe the price of things tho. My dinner was 26 bucks, not including tip not included in the pic the misu soup, and little shrimp appetizer.

Easy to get a table in a Friday night at 730p in front of the lovely aquarium. Staff was friendly, attentive, and efficient. Enjoyed our food and the watermelon margarita.

The place is cool with victorian architecture. The service was great, our server was polite and thoughtful. The food was ok. Saltiest miso soup I've ever had, but the tofu was surprisingly good for tofu.
#1 don't be in a hurry. Food came out Very slowly. We ordered dinner combo with each having choice of main and a roll. Ordered lemon drop martinis and I sent mine back as it was just straight vodka. The second was better but not great. My husband said later he should have sent his back too. Both left sitting on the table. Food arrived 1 hour 15 minutes after ordering. And we left 15 minutes after it arrived. We did have nice lunches the next day. Katsu chicken was dry however.
Tomo is good however the service is really lacking at the moment. They have one waiter serving 7 tables that all get seated at the same time. The food from the kitchen came out before the sushi, the sushi took over a half hour. Not sure why but the owner wouldn't seat us where we requested and did not give a reason. He sat another party there shortly after us. It's too bad the owner ruins an otherwise good restaurant.
The food is decent. Servers are a bit scattered and less than attentive. The atmosphere is like eating in an industrial zone. WAY too noisy! It wouldn't be hard to install noise dampeners, and it would be so much more enjoyable.
Food is decent. But the price for some of the dishes is outrageous. I’m glad we ended up sharing instead of ordering things for ourselves to save some money. The place is nice and the staff is lovely but I’m not sure I can justify these prices for food taste that doesn’t match. Presentation is great!

I'll start out with saying the food was good. We all ordered cocktails but only two people at the table liked theirs. I dont know if the place was short handed but the service was very slow. I asked for a diet coke that I never received. I also asked for a fork 3 times and never received it. I think that's a little ridiculous.

Tomo used to be a fave for good food and a celebratory meal. It has gone down hill recently. Tempura batter has gotten too thick and greasy, and many offerings are too dry and overcooked. Will try a third time soon and if it hasn't improved I'll speak to the manager. The service is still great.
After researching sushi places in Arcata while visiting, this seemed to be the best rated one so we decided to try it. Unfortunately, it was very underwhelming. Our service was good and our waiter was very friendly and attentive, but the food was so bland. No sauce on a roll and just nothing special. We were pretty disappointed after having amazing sushi at a hole in the wall in McKinleyville.
It took over 45 minutes to get our food on a Wednesday at 730. The portions were insanely small for the price. My husband liked the Phili roll. Everything else was not good. We try to eat healthy and so we didn’t order anything fried. Maybe that’s why they have good reviews? Still trying to figure out how this place has good reviews. That was a very disappointing experience.
