Really friendly staff. We visited at a quiet time but it is lovely and spacious so even when it is busy I can imagine it wouldn't feel crowded. From what I saw it was a mix of customers. The atmosphere was relaxed and the staff couldn't do enough for you. We didnt eat so im giving a rating based on the variety on the menu.
Visited here twice for Lunch for the three days i was visiting. Absolutely stunning!!! We visited during the food tour, tasting the Irish Stew which was very flavourable (best one I had visiting) along with VERY fresh Haddock bites. I visited with my partner the day after for lunch and Guinness which were equally as nice. The Leek Sausages, Mash and Gravy, aswell as the Guinness Pie were outstanding. Very Friendly staff and an authentic Irish Pub central of Belfast.
Not to be dramatic but went here today for Sunday dinner.. I honestly don’t know what the Chef did but I have NEVER tasted a dinner so good! I love a roast, and this was so tasty, I turned to my daughter and said this is so good I could cry. 🤣 staff are lovely and will be recommending this place to everyone!
A charming and historic tavern with great atmosphere! We visited during Thanksgiving and were thrilled to see turkey on the menu! It was a great experience to visit one of the oldest taverns in Belfast, and the atmosphere truly lived up to its reputation. A very charming and welcoming place—perfect for a cozy meal!
Me and my brother came across this place over the weekend. I can’t say anything over than exceptional customer service from a legend of a barman named Alan and a fellow colleague Chris. These guys are born Barmen and we enjoyed every moment of chatting the lads. Very welcoming, lovely bar and the pints of Guinness - Supreme! These lads know how to pull a pint and I can honestly say, we found our new local even though we live miles away! A true treasure. Thanks again Alan and Chris!
Very good and traditional food The chef was very professional and the staff kind and prepared ! I highly recommend! Inside the pub/taverna the atmosphere is typically from north Ireland , with music and great people. I’ve been here for 2 days and each time the food was delicious. I highly recommend the soup of the day and all the specific specialty that the waiters suggest you . The chicken pie was very good , the chicken was perfectly cooked prepared in a fantastic way , juicy ad tasty . Thank you! Ps.: whiskey is amazing! Eva from Italy
Went here the first day we were at Belfast recommended by our hotel hostess. The place is small with a very lively atmosphere, we had to wait for a while to get seats but it was well worth it. The food is AMAZING. It kind of ruined it for us because even though the food at other places was good, none came even close to this place :) My sister had the traditional Irish Stew that we tried elsewhere and none came close to it. The meat just melts in your mouth and it is an explosion of flavors. I had the braised beef cheek and it was DELICIOUS. The staff is super kind (like all the wonderful Irish people) even though they were super busy. It is a tavern but is family friendly. It was a great start for our trip. Just go, you won’t be disappointed.
Whites is one of those establishments who know how to do all the right things. A great place to visit for couples, groups (they have a great beer hall), or even if you just fancy a quiet pint on your own in the more traditional atmospheric old bit of the pub at the back. Brilliant for food. We had the Irish stew. Service was swift, efficient, and came with a smile. Nothing was too much trouble. Great Guinness, great craic, great experience. Will definitely return.
Tucked away down a back lane this is a proper snug old pub. Very narrow, coal fire blazing. Great atmosphere. Good selection of drinks and excellent pub food. Highly recommend the chicken stack, served with creamy mash, cherry tomatoes crunchy onions on top and peppercorn sauce. Also the pie of the day (chicken ham leek and mushroom today) was delicious. The house band, was 5 guys just sitting at one of the tables playing Irish music! No stage or anything, brilliant! Really worth a visit.
During our visit to Belfast, we couldn't pass up the chance to visit White's Tavern. It’s said to be the oldest pub in the city. It’s very rustic and definitely makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. She’s from 1630. I opted for the vegetarian vegetable stew, and it exceeded my expectations. As someone who typically avoids stews due to my diet, this dish was a delightful surprise. The stew was hearty and flavorful, and packed with fresh vegetables. It was a real treat to enjoy a comforting stew without worrying about any meat ingredients. We loved sitting in there enjoying dinner and a couple drinks.
Called in for a beer and a bite after arriving in town and stayed for a couple of hours. The beers were good and the 3 for £16 small plates that we had really hit the spot. We had cod bites, chicken strips and caesar fries and all were delicious. We also returned for a beer and a burger a couple of days later before heading to the airport. Staff were friendly and efficient.
Dropped in for a Guinness. Initially got lost as there a three 'Whites' all connected: a dark boozer bar, a beer hall with a wider range of drinks and the tavern. The tavern has a solid range of beer, great Guinness and a broad selection of whiskies. There is food available, which smelt great, but we didn't eat. There was table service for food. You can eat and drink sat at the bar and there are a good few tables. The fireplace was roaring away and there was mix of locals and tourists which made the atmosphere really quite relaxed even though is was busy. We stopped for less than an hour, but if you get a table you could do an entire evening. Really nice place.
STOP! This is it! If you'd never been to an Irish pub before, and you shut your eyes and imagined it, this is what you'd see! Dating from 1630, and the oldest tavern in Belfast, the entrance at the side down an alleyway opens into a long narrow room, darkened with years of log fire smoke, a ceiling of oak beams, tables and chairs in booths, and an unusual bar that was only waist high at the most with an ice sink sunk into it, and which looked like it could have been hand-hewn by Noah! The bar man came over and explained the daily specials, but tempting though they were, we held out for the dish we had come in for - Irish stew! We were rewarded with a big bowl of steaming beef stew and a plate of fabulous wheaten bread, dark like Guinness, crumbly and with a hint of sweetness, a terrific side to the stew! What a wonderful experience!
Delicious food. Very accommodating of vegetarians - they have vegetarian Irish stew that was great, and offered to make us a veggie pie. All really tasty!
Whites Tavern in Belfast came highly recommended by locals and after having their Irish Stew I can agree. It’s quite a small pub/restaurant and also quite dark inside, but very traditional.
Wonderful dining experience for dinner at the Whites Tavern! It boasts as the oldest tavern in Belfast, and has such a charming atmosphere, there is a wood and coal fire in the dining area that gives off a nice aroma through the pub. The seafood chowder was the best I’ve had and the sticky toffee was delightful!
Absolutely loved visiting Whites the 2 times we were in the centre of Belfast, their Irish stew is to die for its absolutely incredible and really tasty. Love the oldy atmosphere and the open fire. It's an incredible place to have lunch or pint or 2
The best pint of Guinness in Belfast, made even better by the bar man Chris who is a wealth of knowledge and just a genuinely lovely person to chat to about the city. Love our experience here.
Nice old Irish Pub, lovely food, had the Irish stew 😋, nice pint of Guinness, friendly service.
Fantastic private event for 50 in the Oyster Room. From start to finish the quality of the service, food and “refreshments” surpassed all expectations. Thank you!
Very cosy pub with great atmosphere and excellent variety of beers. By far my favourite place during my trip to Belfast. I highly recommend it and would definitely visit again.
We have been to Whites many times before but this time was most definitely review worthy thank to the fantastic Harry who served us today. He was wonderfully attentive to us and very knowledgeable about the local dishes, he also pours a perfect Guinness. Our first time having food at Whites and it was top notch. We had the White burger and a seafood chowder which was scrumptious and we can highly recommend to anyone else visiting Whites. Thank you again Harry for being an excellent host!

White's has been around for a long time. They know what they are doing. There are various sections to White's: a proper tavern, a short of long hall way configuration and a proper dining hall. During our 11 nights in Belfast we dined there twice. We felt that it was elevated pub food. Our dishes were calamari, Irish stew, burger and fries & a rigatoni with chicken & mushrooms on a cream sauce. All of the dishes were well prepared and flavourful. They have a nice selection of beer taps. The Guinness is poured perfectly. Service in the dining hall and from the bartenders were top notch. They keep their lighting low which is attractive. One night we enjoyed a versatile guitarist/singer. The place is super clean (top marks for their toilets). The crowd was enjoying themselves. Oh, & they do accept reservations for dining. There is much to like about White's. Their experience shows.
Very good service. Good "pub grub" quality food with portion sizes that were OK. Table could have been wiped a bit more before we sat down. Toilets were not particular clean or well maintained. Overall a good 4 Stars - but could be Stars with a bit more attention to detail...
I thoroughly enjoyed the food. The haddock and chips were of great quality and well complimented by the mushy peas. As well as this we ordered the cheesecake of the day which we were told was Oreo cheesecake, however what we got tasted more like chocolate caramel or millionaire cheesecake. Either way the cheesecake to top it off was great quality. However the missus thought the chips were a bit hard and was disappointed that the Oreo cheesecake didn’t exist (even though she happily munched and enjoyed the caramel cheesecake) so because she’s the boss the food only recieved 3 stars.
Great place for lunch in Belfast with that old world charm. Service is spot on and food is great. This is a very popular spot so if you haven't booked don't be disappointed if you can't get a table. If there is a downside, and I'm just being picky, the music through the speakers is quite loud and intrusive at times.
Great service. Limited menu, but tasty food.
Found the place by chance and given the reputation of a 1630 pub we decided to make the experience ours. Unfortunately the Stew was dry and cold, just a few meat pieces, vegetables bland and tasteless, the steak sambo’s meat (sandwich) was a little hard to take a clean bite without using the knife and no salt, but the chips were incredible! our server was attentive and friendly, a coke (mini with a tag of a two liter bottle) a Guinness beer for the total of £60 it’s to expect a lot more.
This is a classic location in Belfast. We ate in the Beer Hall section. The service was slow, drinks were wrong (and I’d say the drinks were ok). The food was good. The puff on the beef pie was a bit dense and the veggies steamed within an inch of their lives.
The food was pretty good, but the service was not great. We tried going into the tavern first, and we're just told we cannot eat there in a short and kind of rude manner. We ended up eating in the brewery side where it took a while to get anyone's attention and to get any food. Overall it was not a great experience, but it is a cute tavern with pretty good food.
Checked twice before coming that the gluten free options were safe for coeliacs and I was assured that they are. When I asked at the restaurant it turned out everything that was marked gf is cooked in the same fryer as products containing gluten. Therefore, nothing marked as gluten free was actually safe to eat. Had to get plain chicken and mash in the end which was nice but I would not go back.
Very disappointing Christmas dinner experience. Party of 16, we were seated right in front of the bar. Which was incredibly busy as they seemed to be open as normal for business in this area. Meaning people were constantly jostled around during dinner. Random punters asking "Are you going to finish that?" and someone started rubbing one of our heads. Serving staff were squeezing past with platters of food overhead. Whilst people in for a drink also tried to find somewhere to stand between us and the bar. No drinks orders were taken even though a lot of the party couldn't get out from their seats without crawling under the tables as we were boxed in. Though probably just as well since we had to wait so long for food to actually be served. Mains arrived at 8pm, the table was booked for 6:30. Steaks were delivered with no comment or idea how they'd been cooked or even with the correct sauce. I understand that it's Christmas time and it's going to be busy, but they are not set up and ready for offering Christmas dinner. It was an absolute shambles and in no way whatsoever worth the £40. Serving dinner in an open, busy bar, is awful for everyone involved. I really wish I'd booked somewhere else. I was very embarrassed that I'd brought my friends here for dinner.
