This review is a long time coming! I had my Bridal Shower at the beginning of August, and the team at McHugh made everything soooo easy! My group of 20 had a blast, and the private room was perfect for the small bridal shower games we played. The food was hands-down amazing (honorable mention to the Peaches and Cream scones, the English Cucumber Sandwiches, both chicken salads, the bottomless mimosas, and the amazing teas!). I also opted for the inhouse cake (Italian Cream), and every one loved it! Everything about the restaurant was delicious and cute. I truly, truly had a great time, and I cannot wait to be back. Ps. Our server was so helpful, and our experience a thousand times better! All the girls were raving about you! Thank you Amy and team! <3
This place was perfect for our girlfriend's tea party. They were able to accomodate 2 extra add ons which I really appreciated. They also asked if we had any food allergies prior to our reservation time. The place is a bit tight but its very cozy and the staff was so sweet. They helped us take various photos and even suggested the best place to take them. The tea selection is very good though they did run out of a few we wanted to try. Everything was set up and ready to go by the time we arrived. The food was okay I really liked the chicken salad sandwich and the pimiento cheese. The cupcakes were really cute and the pecan tartlet was really tasty. The lemon tarts were a little too sweet for my taste. The scones were delicious as well. Overall it was a great experience very enjoyable and they let us take our time and didn't rush out which I really appreciated. Parking is pretty plentiful. Directions are a little obscure if your using google maps. I would turn as soon as you see the amegy bank complex its right next to a music academy.
I love this place! It's so nice and very well decorated. Kim, the owner, as well as her whole staff, is so friendly and nice. They have excellent service and truly care to give you the best experience! I came for the first time over a year ago for my birthday, and have been going back ever since! I go often for afternoon tea. They've also got great mimosas!!!!
I have had afternoon tea twice at this place. Gratuity is included and was about $80 for two people. All of the food was delicious and the teas are excellent. The only sandwich I didn't like was the heart shaped one because it's too sweet for my taste. You have to make sure to make reservations as they get very busy. Also, dress code is not strict. Some patrons dress very nicely and others are casual. It's definitely an excellent place to have brunch as well.
The atmosphere was really nice, very relaxed and I love the big windows and no direct sun. The decor is fantastic, everything has so much thought put into it. I mean, even the hanging lights above the tables have teacups! The gift shop portion is really neat, if you have a tea geek, or are one yourself, you could definitely find something. Everything was super clean too, the bathrooms were well-kept and each table was neatly taken care of. The staff is great, they know their menus and teas very well and are super chill. Our waitress was very patient and nice, she was totally willing to start up mini conversations about tea cups or give you more information about tea. I even had a long, in-depth coversation with the manager (i wish i could remember his name) just about tea and the buissness, I really enjoyed it too. He could tell you the history of the store and some of thier decorations. You guys should really check out their website, it has the full menu and a whole bunch of other resources like donating old tea sets or purchasing more teas. The teas were awesome, the asortment and blends that they have are amazing. If you like a particular tea, you can buy a bag of it, the pricing of the tea is fair when you consider that a professional tea blender (not kidding, that dude actually took a class and everything) made that flavor. There is a wall in the entry that has a whole bunch of tea blends that you can smell, i didn't get a picture of it unfortunately, but its super cool. I got the Masala Chai (a lovely spice tea that tasted amazing and is probably my favorite), the Blood Orange (a citrus tea that didnt quite strike my fancy), and the black currant (an amazing floral black tea with a slight berry flavor and very rich in tone). Keep in mind that certain teas are sold seasonally, I really liked the Hojicha tea but they were going to stop making it because it didn't go over well with some people, so i bought a bag of it and it'll last me ages. One thing I really liked was the varietyin thier tea cups, each one is different in look, style, and era. It's a lot of fun to discuss eachothers cup and learn a bit about that time. The food was great, tasty and very filling. I got the chicken salad and it was good and little spicy, which I liked. I didn't try any of their sweets this time around but I'll leave another review when I do :) The pricing, to my cheapskate mind, is pretty big but it is fair when you think about all the effort and time it takes to make that experience really memorable and enjoyable. If you're looking for a place to just pick up tea, the teas are phenomenal so no shame there, you can but please give this place you're time. All I'll say is that it is a different experience. Thank you for reading! I hope that this helps. :)
A hidden and remarkable gem tucked away near Chinatown! Ever since having high tea at Balmoral in Edinburgh, our expectations for high tea have been elevated. McHugh Tea did not disappoint and we are excited to have something like this in Houston! We went for afternoon high tea on a Saturday for our anniversary. I called the day before to make reservations over the phone and it was super easy. Parking was plentiful in front of the shop (they have a large parking lot). My husband is vegetarian so we requested that the high tea have vegetarian sandwiches. There were three types - cucumber/cream cheese, savory cheese and a vegetarian salad sandwich instead of chicken salad. The sandwiches were all yummy and the savory cheese was as authentic as it comes. It also came with two scones (a bit bigger than macarons) that were cranberry/orange and matcha. They came with clotted cream, strawberry jam and lemon curd. The scones were very light and fluffy and served warm. While I’ve had clotted cream and strawberry jam frequently, I have never had lemon curd and it was a pleasant combination! The small desserts were a good addition to the teas. I’m terms of the teas, they had a great selection of white, black, oolong and green teas. We picked the Silver needle (white tea), Honeysuckle Fig (oolong) and Pu-erh teas. Our waitress guided us on the order to drink the tea and it was very helpful because we enjoyed the flavors more. The Honeysuckle Fig was unanimously our favorite as it had a natural sweetener. Overall, we had a great time and plan on being back again!
Amy and the team helped my family tremendously in catering a last minute celebration of life. It was a tight turn around and their kitchen pulled it off - five stars for communication and accommodation. Our guests raved about the food and asked where it was from, the quality and flavor of each selection was outstanding. Our cousin who picked it up the morning of said the staff could not have been more gracious, and the manager when I ordered on the phone was incredibly kind. Most importantly of all, my grandmother would have loved it. Highly recommend catering, and will be returning soon for a sit down tea.
This was our first visit to Houston and we wanted to stop for high tea. Called up this place for a reservation and casually mentioned we had just moved to Texas. When we arrived, the hosts had put together a Welcome to Texas plate for us! This was just the start of the experience. Our waitress was so kind and warm, and immediately brought our tea and food. The tea is PHENOMENAL and we each drank an obscene amount. We ordered the Vanilla Mint Chai, Hazelnut Cookie and Cream Early Gray and highly recommend all three. The food was good, and the atmosphere was so welcoming - you will definitely leave full with high tea for two! We could not have asked for more for our visit and when we come back to Houston, will definitely be stopping in again!
This was my first visit to a tea room and it was better than expected. We had bottomless tea and bubbly, 2 types of scones, sandwiches, and dessert. Our server was polite and the restaurant was at a pleasant noise level. Our tea and champagne was refilled timely. I would definitely recommend for a nice event or special day with a friend or family member.
Delicious tea sandwiches, diverse tea options for all ages, and a serene atmosphere. Perfect for quality time with loved ones! We had four kids under 11 join us. The tea service included the most delicate cucumber sandwiches, mouthwatering lemon bars, and crumbly scones (girls said they were better than Camp Mystic). The girls loved the decaffeinated tea, and Grandma loved the Masala Chai! I packed a pimiento heart and chicken salad sandwich in the lunch boxes the next day! So cute!!!! Reserve your spot for afternoon high tea, at least the day before. Overall, I highly recommend it! It was a cozy, delightful experience. Ideal for cherished outings with loved ones! I can't wait to come back!
This place is warm and cozy. Staff is friendly and respectful; they didn't rush us out the door. We accidentally stayed about 20min after closing. We got afternoon tea and my favorites were the scones and pimento cheese sandwiches. I highly recommend this place. For tea, the vanilla matcha and black tea rum were delicious.
Enjoyed Afternoon Tea with my sister. We were able to choose 3 different teas from a long list of options. There is definitely something on the list for everyone...we had the English Breakfast, Bikini Peach Body and white mango pear. All were delicious and smelled so good! We enjoyed pimento cheese, chicken salad and cucumber sandwiches and a variety of sweets and scones. Everything had great flavor and we left full and happy.
Lovely tea room experience. The staff was accommodating with a slight change to add more vegetarian food to the menu when we arrived. Both mothers and daughters in our group felt comfortable to chat without feeling that we needed to rush through our afternoon tea in order to accommodate the next group. Everyone there loved their pimento cheese tea sandwiches.
We went to eat lunch here. So glad I did. The atmosphere was great. The food was good. I had a BLT and the chicken veggie soup. It came with a fruit salad or carrot salad on the side. I choose the carrot salad. That’s the only thing I didn’t like. It’s literally shredded carrots, that’s it. It needed a sauce over it and maybe some raisins. My aunt had gotten their chili. Which is very hardy and generous with meat. We loved their heart croutons. The tea there is wonderful. We choose 2 different flavors. I recommend their coconut oolong and their honeysuckle fig. Service was great. She explained the difference of the teas they offer. I enjoyed learning about teas. Surely coming back. We purchased at least 6 bags of tea to take home to enjoy.
McHugh Tea Room & Gifts is an absolute gem! The atmosphere is warm and inviting, and the tea selection is incredible. What really sets this place apart is the owner, Amy—she’s incredibly hospitable and goes out of her way to make every guest feel welcome. Amy’s passion for tea truly shines as she takes the time to educate you about the different blends, their origins, and how best to enjoy them. It’s a rare and refreshing experience that keeps you coming back. Highly recommend for tea lovers or anyone looking for a cozy, enriching visit!
We had a really lovely afternoon tea. The tea was delicious and the food was yummy as well. Mikayla did a wonderful job.
Bought some tea leaves today for my significant other. I don't really drink tea. But I brewed a cup of the raspberry tea. It was really good. Excellent tea here if your looking for a great selection.
Absolutely perfect afternoon tea with my BFF from New York! Nancy was fabulous and very attentive....The teas were magnificent as wellas the food on every level . We will definitely be back again!
I love McHugh. What a wonderful respite in this crazy world. I have brought a couple of lady friends who have later taken their husbands. Everyone I introduce to McHugh Tea Room loves it, too.

I celebrated a friend's birthday today. The tea service for 2 was fabulous. We received 3 teas, 2 scones (warm from the oven), 3 sandwiches (chicken salad, pimento cheese and cucumber), and 3 desserts (lemon bar, brownie and cupcake). Our waiter was Nancy and she was excellent. She noticed we had a child's tea set and she graciously shared the small tea set they use for children's parties. Everything was delicious beyond description. I HIGHLY recommend!
I have been having tea at McHugh’s for many years. Having spent part of my childhood in England I love the atmosphere and incredible selections of teas. It is my good to place to celebrate special occasions. My sons know how much I enjoy McHugh’s so they presented we with a gift card for my birthday. I was able to celebrate with three dear friends, two of which had never been. We all loved our time there.
Beautiful little tea room tucked in the heart of Bellaire. Thoughtfully decorated with colorful art, the space has a bright, airy, almost Parisian bistro vibe. We went for regular lunch service, not afternoon tea; the teas are delightful, the food is wonderfully tasty, and the service is on point. My friend had the Sampler Plate - petite quiche, chicken salad, cucumbers, carrot salad and fruit. I had the Pimento Cheese sandwich grilled and a cup of Tomato Basil soup. Everything was outstanding. The assorted mini dessert box is perfect for sharing, and a nice sampling of their fabulous desserts. Reservations strongly recommended as they were full the entire two hours we were there. Despite being full, the noise level was such that you could carry on conversation without raising your voice. They have a small shop on one side devoted to the organic loose teas and other tea related gifts. Overall, a very lovely afternoon lunch and we will be back soon.
Our group of 12 ladies had a fabulous time at McHugh Tea Room! Service was impeccable, food was delicious, and the teas were awesome. McHugh was so very accommodating and we enjoyed a delightful experience!
Hosted a bridal shower at McHugh’s. It was a seamless experience from start to finish. We were completely taken care of. The food was delicious and tea was perfect. We did bring some personalized decor but we didn’t need much as they took care of everything! Thank you!
We were there over the weekend for a bridal shower luncheon. The place was very unique, clean, and very cute. Staff were patiently waiting for us to order! Everyone had a great time.!
I had the most delightful experience at McHugh Tea Room! The ambiance was charming, and every detail was thoughtfully curated. A special thank you to Nancy and Miriam, who were absolutely amazing. Their warm hospitality and impeccable service made the morning truly memorable for my birthday. The tea selection was extensive, and the treats were delicious. Highly recommend for anyone looking for a cozy and elegant tea experience!
This place is a hidden treasure. I love, love tea! So many delicious tea options. We absolutely loved our experience. The staff are beautiful, nice and attentive. For a day we felt like we traveled across the pond. We will definitely go back.
The grilled cheese, get it on rye. You're welcome! And the tomato bisque. Devine. Wonderful spot for something different and delicious. Finding my fashinators for my next visit.
What a wonderful tea time experience. The atmosphere is spot on. The food is scrumptious and delectable . The scones are heaven. Moist and soft. We had lunch of mushroom and asparagus quiche and tomato basil soup. A fruit cup was very refreshing. The teas are numerous and very aromatic...and taste Devine. I enjoyed red raspberry. We will definitely be returning. Thank you for a lovely afternoon and helping us celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary.
We came here for a friends birthday and I was so impressed! They had everything gluten free for me that was served to the other ladies. It was separated and looked the exact same as the “normal” versions. I loved this! Not to mention it was delicious. The tea was amazing. The lemon curd and scones were outstanding. It was just an amazing experience for me. I’m used to having to modify everything or miss out on things just so I can participate. That wasn’t an issue here and I had a great time.

McHugh Tea Room and Gifts is a magical place where friends go to catch up, milestones are celebrated and memories are created. From service, to food, catering, private events, and the TEA, everything has been so well thought out and catered to the customer experience. New favorite local business!

I loved McHugh’s Tea Room! A friend and I went for brunch, and the moment we walked in we were greeted by the cutest dining room—so feminine, and it smelled amazing. We ordered two different teas so we could share and taste both. I had the Mediterranean salad with chicken, and my bestie Gail ordered the quiche—she loved it. Before leaving, we each took home an order of scones. OMG… they were so good! Even my husband said the scones were out of this world!!!!
I work a couple doors down & have stopped by multiple times now. I love the black tea & earl grey butter cookies. There is something there that deeply calms my soul & keeps calling me back. Thankful to have found this place.
Stumbled upon this Tea Room by accident. My self and two other ladies. We were pleasantly surprised. The tea selection was varied with clear explanations of each type (over 20 kinds of tea). I had the lunch special - 1/2 sandwich (chicken salad on sourdough), cup of soup (chicken Parmesan), and carrot salad (fruit was the other option). My friends had 1) quiche special - petite slice (Lorraine) cup of soup (chicken Parmesan), and fruit. 2) grilled cheese on croissant came with cup of soup (Tomato basil), & fruit (or carrot salad). We shared a small pot of hot tea. Each tea cup and saucer was a different pattern. The food was good. The carrot salad not traditional but good. We are planning on going back with friends after Christmas.

What a nice experience. The tea room is a charming little spot with some beautiful China. I want to buy it all! The sandwiches were a little on the simple side but they were good, as were the desserts. There was a great selection of teas, some of which I haven’t seen anywhere else. The scones were small but good. I do feel like there could have been more cream/jam given per table as I asked for more but it never came. The lunch food that others were ordering around us looked absolutely delicious. I will say that it was very loud inside the restaurant, it was hard to hear each other talking. But service was good and the pricing was right. Great little place!
Went here for my sister's birthday it was really cute the set up was beautiful I highly recommend the Moroccan mint, however the chicken salad sandwich was a little bland other than that great place.
I recently visited McHugh Tea Room & Gifts, and while my experience wasn’t perfect, I still enjoyed my time there. The tea selection was excellent, and the tea I ordered was delicious. The food was also pretty good—everything tasted fresh and well-prepared. However, the service was a bit slower than I expected. There were only two staff members working during my visit, and one of them was busy attending to a large party. It seemed like they were a bit understaffed that day, which may have contributed to the slower pace. One thing I didn’t know beforehand was that you have to reserve their tea tray a day in advance. I had just discovered the place that day, so I didn’t have the opportunity to try it, which was a little disappointing. That said, I totally understood their policy, and it’s good to know for future visits. Despite these small hiccups, I’d definitely come back to try them again. The tea and food were good enough to make me want to give it another shot, and I’m sure the staff was doing their best under the circumstances. It might have just been an off day, and I’m curious to see how they are on a fully-staffed day!
This place is so cute. I was disappointed when I came for my reservation because I didn’t get to choose which food package I wanted. I was told over the phone that I would make the selection at the restaurant. My waitress said that the manager was the one who took my rez but she never asked me which food package I wanted so she put us down for the traditional tea package which I didn’t want. I wanted the Halloween seasonal package. So be sure when making your rez you tell them which food package you want. I’ll be sure to do that when I come back which I will definitely be going back!
Very cute. Had an afternoon high tea with some friends. Our server was very sweet and kind. Tea smelled excellent and was overall tasty. Like that they give you three picks so you can sample different teas and not worry about committing to the wrong one. Pastries were good, not overly sweet. I was appreciative of their nonmeat sandwich choices.

This review is specifically for the CHRISTMAS AFTERNOON TEA. The website is not clear, it is $55/person even for children. The entire tea is more of a snack. VERY light tea. For the extra cost, you’d think they’d give you enough food for a meal. The quality of the sandwiches and desserts was terrible. Sandwiches were straight from a kid’s lunchbox- slab of ham, white bread, and cranberry jelly..then white bread, bell peppers, and 2 spinach leaves. Then some chopped up cat food on a cracker. Sure they were cute, but not worth the $55. The scones and pecan pie were the only things worth mentioning. The tea selection is great and customer service was friendly. But do NOT pay extra for the “special” tea service for Christmas. Total rip off. The regular afternoon tea looks great, sandwiches were full sized and desserts actually filled up the plate they were brought on. Our entire party felt ripped off for the price once we saw a table next to us with the regular afternoon tea.

- Disappointed and bamboozled - This review is specific to the specialty Christmas tea offering. We went this morning with young ones in tow for our first experience at McHugh’s. We left feeling disappointed and bamboozled. Be aware the listed price of “begins at $45” will actually set you back $55 per person for essentially a kids menu. Both the food quantity as well as quality was absolutely not up to par for that price. As the manager stated in a previous review response - that $55 price IS listed online, but you have to click three different places to find it. Tucking it away like that is not transparent advertising. AND despite what is stated on their website, no one confirmed this new price of $55 when we booked our reservation. It felt like a bait and switch to us. The service, while friendly, was slow despite the restaurant being less than half full. We were never offered waters but saw other tables readily receiving them. The “freshly baked scones” were falling apart and were not served with the advertised clotted cream and jam. Not even butter was offered. The desserts, as you can see below are meager: Halved strawberries with icing piped on top. For $55? We both felt bamboozled. There is a reason no one else in the restaurant ordered the Christmas special. It is noticeably meager compared to the regular tea and yet costs more money..? When the quality and quantity of the food was brought to the attention of the manager she took an argumentative tone, stating everything was accurately listed on their website. The insinuation was that it was somehow our fault that we didn’t realize we were getting a kids menu for $55 pp. Her tone and response were really inappropriate. Buyer beware. We will not be back.

I'm very sorry to say that our Valentine's tea was hugely disappointing. The tea was absolutely flavorless (which I say as a huge tea fan), the desserts were soggy and bland, and the scones were absolutely tiny, although they were pretty tasty. I enjoyed the sandwiches and the presentation of everything, but the overall quality and quantity of the food and tea did not match the price tag. Not to mention the fact that we booked this two weeks in advance and didn't get our tea or food until 30 minutes after our reservation time. Unfortunately, we will not be returning.
We visited today for my birthday after seeing so many great reviews, and I was honestly surprised by the high ratings. Our server was very kind, and the service itself was not an issue. However, several details took away from the overall tea experience. We ordered two large pots of tea, which were good, but the presentation was disappointing. The table had a cup full of assorted sugar packets from random establishments, including Dunkin’ Donuts. We were also given Smucker’s sample-size honeys, which felt out of place and diminished the ambiance of a tea house. Additionally, when it came time for our scones, we were handed tea saucers instead of actual plates. The tomato soup also tasted similar to canned Campbell’s with added cream, which further contributed to the underwhelming experience. These details significantly detracted from the atmosphere and were not in line with what one would expect from a proper afternoon tea service. This tea house has the potential to be very charming, but the details and presentation made it feel tacky rather than a proper afternoon tea setting. Unfortunately, it wasn’t a good experience for us, and we won’t be returning.

Came here with my cousins hoping to have a good time catching up. This place has cute decor and pretty tasty sandwiches with good selection of organic teas. Unfortunately, the pros stop there. Let's start with the service. I alerted the waitress that I was allergic to the honey scone she just placed on my plate. She made an annoyed face, picked it up and placed it on my cousin's plate. It was fine with us cause we're family but still isn't proper food safety. We needed lemons and extra cream for our scones that we had to repeatedly ask for. My cousin was interested in a tea set and was asking about the price. The waitress told her the price of a cup and said she didn't know the price of the set. She didn't even bother to ask anyone for us. We eventually had to ask someone else and they were able to get it for us. When we get our bill, a 20% tip was already added. It finally makes sense why she didn't make an effort with service since she's guaranteed this forced tip. On top of that she charged my cousin 20% on the food AND the tea set she purchased. In my opinion, gratituity should only be charged on the cost of the food and not on the merchandise. It would be more reasonable if she actually helped find out the price but she didn't even try. How dare she take 20% of that sale when she didn't help at all? The scones were small and dessert did not taste good. Next time, I will skip this place and pay the extra money for better and honest service elsewhere.
I thoroughly enjoyed the tea and the overall experience at the establishment. However, it was disappointing that customer satisfaction seemed overlooked. I suggest implementing a 2-3 person grace period for large reservations to avoid the inconvenience we faced, being charged $50 per absent person for unprepared food and drinks. This policy seems unfair and could impact the overall enjoyment of future patrons. In addition to our disappointment, I reached out to request an exception and a phone call from a general manager to address our concerns, but regrettably, no response was received. The lack of communication adds to the overall sense of unprofessionalism, leaving us feeling unheard and dissatisfied with the customer service aspect of our experience.
