The most pillowy soft and flavorful naan I've had in the Bay! We've been looking for our favorite Indian restaurant in the Bay for years and I'm so excited to say we've finally found it with Breads of India. The veggie pakoras were deliciously crunchy and balanced, the apricots in the jardaloo murgi (a May / June special) were a perfectly sweet complement to the tender chicken, and I'm still dreaming of the naan one week later. If you're craving high quality Indian cuisine and bold but balanced flavors, don't pass this place up.

Got parathas here. They were able to make "off-the menu items" for me. Very homelike taste and great quantity. Will definitely go back to try rest of their menu items.

Great Indian food. You can tell that everything is freshly made. The daal that comes with most orders is absolutely phenomenal. One of the best I've had.

We love going to this place. The variety of dishes and the combination of spicing is absolutely amazing. Truly well done high quality food

Very relaxing and comfortable little gem off the main roads. Many flavor pallettes can be enjoyed with each visit. Music was a wonderful touch. Expect slow relaxing combination of sitar and tabla.

*Update* Fire on 9/15/2012, closed temporarily -- I love all the Breads of India locations but this one is the best. Just ask the owner, she will tell you so! And she's right! If "Indian" means "buffet" to you, be prepared for something much better than you've ever had. And the owner gives personal attention to everyone and makes you truly feel like a welcome guest.

I have had the pleasure of eating here several times. Every time has been awesome!! Get the garlic naan! It's amazing. Great and fast service.

Unbelievable culinary experience. Out of this world. This is some of the best Indian food I've ever had. Plus gluten free bread options take this to another level. Thank you!

Dishes are prepared with skill and finese. Consistently one of the top Indian restaurants in Northern California.

Interesting Indian food. Not just the usual butter chicken and tikka masala. Always exceptional breads.

The food here is delicious! By far the best Indian food I've had. It smells amazing as soon as you open the door, and the service is wonderful. I would recommend it to anyone who likes Indian, and I bring out of town guests here. The food can be on the spcier side, but not so spicy that you can't taste anything.

J
Jack Gerson

I had saag kofta and a paratha with potato filling. Both were excellent, as have been my previous experiences here with vegan and non-vegan dishes. The prices are pretty low, too.

So lucky to have found this place. Our new favorite Indian spot. The food was absolutely delicious and you could tell a certain amount of care and effort was put into it. There were many dishes on here that I had not seen before. I ordered the jackfruit masala and my husband got saag paneer, along with some piratha and garlic herb kulcha (naan). So so so good, and the service was very fast (ready to go in less than 15 min). We are out in Walnut Creek but will be coming back as soon as we can!

Absolutely delicious - loved the Pazham Urandakari with the Aloo Piyaz Paratha. Don’t sleep on this place! Very flavorful and affordable, top-tier samosas too.

C

My husband and I adore this little gem! Whenever we eat here or get takeout, we feel like we’ve eaten a home-cooked meal of Indian food and it warms our hearts and our bellies. We are so grateful for Breads of India being nestled in our neighborhood.

I

Hands down one of my favorite Indian places. Great vegetarian and meat options. A particular favorite is the paneer vindaloo. The samosas are also really tasty. Also, as the name suggests, the breads are tasty. Order some raita and more bread than you think you need and enjoy!

R

Breads of India is a classic berkeley haunt but it deserves special attention because it’s food is especially unique regional selections. The bread lives up to the name with a rotating regional selection that is always tasty and fresh. Not expensive, organic food.

D
David Snipper

One of our favorite places for dinner. Short menu but very tastefully prepared meals that are not your usual East Indian steam- table fare. Great and varied selection of breads (Nan) that always compliment your dinner selection.

A
Andrea Szeto

Their bread choices are amazing. I’ve had many spectacular ones - attention to texture, quality of herbs and oils make a huge difference. Highly recommend the salmon tandoori and tikka masala sauce. Richer and spicer than most, so usually not good for kids. Veggie curries are interesting - unusual spices. Sometimes veggies are over cooked though. Better than average lassi. Skip the chai. Good service, quiet atmosphere.

It's the food, really. I've driven past this place a thousand times and then, the other day, a suggested we have dinner there after a show. It ended up being six of us and I got to see and taste six dishes. Each one was superb. Been back two times in two weeks. Yum. You can't go wrong. Normally I keep this sort of thing to myself, but some places deserve praise and to be known. Bon appetit!

Great place, food is delicious. I love the chicken, taka masala and the garlic bread. I highly recommend this place. Excellent service.

Most legit North Indian food in all of Bay Area. Don’t even think just go here. Saag tastes just like Indian homemade saag! Everything is made fresh so expect a little wait if you want perfect naans.

S
Shambavi Krishnamurthi

The menu delves into dishes from different parts of India beyond the mainstream ones we usually see at Indian restaurants in North America. The detailed descriptions on the menu help you learn more about what you're eating. Almost all entrees come with rice, creamy daal (lentils) and some greens. The naan/kulcha were large and fluffy. The bharwa karela (bitter melon) was very flavorful and bitter. Instantly took me back to my childhood. Menu changes monthly. Can't wait to be back to explore more of the Indian cuisine

I have come here a couple times to take out Kulchas and Parathas. The quality is extremely good and breads are tasty and hot and cooked through. The pricing is very good and the service has always been very friendly. I have yet to try any of the food yet but plan to do so because the menu looks super interesting. Probably

This Indian restaurant deserves to be known much more widely! Had an outstanding lunch here this week. I’m from India, and have high standards for Indian food. Quite bummed out that it took me 11 years to discover this amazing restaurant. But there are so many Indian restaurants in East Bay, and this had just never crossed my radar as a place to try. First of all, the menu is outstanding. There are dishes that you will never find on the menu of any other restaurant. We had Chicken Paratha Fold, Masaledar Bharwa Karela (bitter melon; literally as good as my mom’s, but it’s an acquired taste), and Kori Gasi (a south Indian chicken curry). Everything was outstanding (except for one small thing: the paratha did not appear to be fresh). I loved the attention to detail in everything else. They have the very best green chutney (cilantro-mint) and red chutney (tamarind) I have ever eaten in any Indian restaurant in the US (and I’ve lived here more than 40 years). Portions are a good size, and the two of us were completely full. You don’t have to pay extra for rice, like you have to do almost everywhere else. The entrees come with rice and daal and a small serving of salad (some very nice lettuce drizzled with green chutney; sensational!). Their house wine is only $5 a glass. Nowhere else in the Bay Area can you get a glass of wine for that price; a very generous pour too. Our dessert was Phirni (a very traditional rice-flour pudding). That was only $4 for a very generous serving. Overall, the food was really delicious, the portions generous, the prices very reasonable. Service was great. We will definitely be back again and again. Still have to try all those unique and delicious-sounding breads!

Yummmm. They should have a higher rating!! Their food is really tasty. And it’s not greasy like some of the other Indian restaurants around. I got the butter chicken to go and it came with a leg and thigh. Was surprised to get two big pieces of chicken. I ate them so fast I ended up in food comatose. Oops. The meal comes with rice and a little salad. It doesn’t cost as much as other restaurants and is far better tasting. Going to be back to try more of their food.

AMAZING food here! I have yet to have a bad dish. Very robust flavors and VERY good level of spice. I love the menu and how it is in constant change. I suggest trying their naan pairings for the daily dish. The decor is nice without being too garish. Quiet and soothing atmosphere here. Nicely lit without being over bright. This is one of the better indian spots in Berkeley. There is only one spot better in my opinion.

very good indian food in an unassuming little restaurant. the meal is expensive for lunch, as naan (bread) is not included in the meal price. don't let the cash only chase you away, the liquor store across the street has an atm. don't let that chase you

There was always a long line outside this Breads of India, and living a few doors down, the aroma arising from the restaurant is tantalizing. Great bread with enjoyable Indian dishes. Far better than many of the Indian restaurants with lunch buffets in the area.

The food is usually good here, but they're pretty slow. There is always a new "bread" of the day to go with the dish, but you're probably better off with plain naan.

B
Brent Follin

The menu holds a lot of promise but sadly the execution disappoints. Remarkably plain for desi cuisine, and flavor profile seemed off in the way canned or overcooked/undersimmered meals can. Breads are good, but don't make up for the lack of curry quality.

M
Mike Izo

Not a fan. Interesting selection for lunch, but was disappointed with the Chicken Tikka Masala. Sauce was thin and mild flavored. Unfortunately, if this staple isn't nailed I don't have much hope for other items.

M

The mango lassi was so sour it felt like acid on my tongue. There are not many options on the menu. A fixed 5-7 items with lamb and fish. Usual americanized indian dishes. Nothing amazing here.

We ordered Methi Butter Chicken to go. Thought it would be a dinner size. Turned out it came with rice in a lunch box. There were two boney, i mean literally boney dark meat in there, for $16!! Quite disappointed with the quantity for this price; at least you could have given us some chicken meat to chew on.

S

I ordered chicken tikka masala and garlic naan through Caviar. Delivery arrived earlier than expected—amazing. The food, not so much. The tikka masala tasted like sambar (a South Indian lentil dish) in a bad way and the garlic naan was nearly pungent (coming from someone who loves garlic). Ended up throwing most of it. Pretty gross, wouldn’t recommend.

Food was not so good. I also saw one of the chefs walking out of the bathroom, and it looked like he didn't wash his hands after he flushed the toilet.

Use to be good and worth the extra $$. Now not the case. Just got chicken tika masala and it was so watered down and was more of a gross watery gravy. Too bad they use to be good

Order forst time pain $140 and it was so so bad food. If u panjabi plz dont order food from here. Its nepali food has no spices no salt totally bland food. So disapppintment. Chkn tikka masala is all watery. Saag paneer is so bad .

After many years we returned to this once esteemed restaurant and while the menu was unchanged, the cooking was very disappointing. Gone were the vibrant spices. The daal, saag, and curries were bland. And the tandoori salmon was definitely not marinated or seared in any kind of high heat oven (nor was the subpar naan). Service was very slow -- which was odd because there was no one else being served during the entire time we were there. Very sad shadow of its former self.
