Sierra Mar is highly praised for its breathtaking views and exceptional service, particularly from Hector. The food is generally considered delicious, with the tasting menu and seafood courses being highlights. Some diners have noted issues with overcooked steak and the limited view during winter dinners.

Only one of the most breathtaking places I've ever been to. The view of the bay and distant mountains is both exhilarating and captivating. The service went above and beyond and the food is superb! All given much attention to and described in detail by servers. Extremely polite staff. Gorgeous resort accompanies this place. A definite go to!
Really great lunch experience with stunning views. Service was wonderful. We loved the chefs garden harvest - naan and vegetables with a variety of spreads. The oysters were some of the best I’ve ever had. The architecture and landscaping of the place made for an incredible ambiance.
What an experience. Eating brunch here is like eating while seated on the clouds. It’s an unparalleled feeling. Chef brought out some delicious steak and roasted vegetables to mark a memorable afternoon. Such great knowledgeable staff. Would highly recommend trying out Sierra Mar while in Big Sur, it’s an exceptional location and great dining experience.
An unbelievable experience, with equally unbelievable food. While pricey it provided a beautiful atmosphere, and the chef catered to allergies - even with their "fixed" menu. This was above and beyond, and the food was equally so. Even just the view alone is almost worth it (but the food seals the deal).
One of the better meals of my life. My family and I arrived after a long day of hiking, and spur of the moment decided to treat ourselves to a fancy meal. While not dressed for it in the least, we were kindly seated promptly. Service was excellent but unobtrusive, and the view was unparalleled (huge bay windows overlooking the ocean). My main course was lamb (I wish I had a picture) served on a piece of smoking eucalyptus bark (yes, it was on fire). The aromatics of the eucalyptus combined with the well-executed lamb (both Australian) made it a truly special dish.
Sierra Mar offers a simply unforgettable dining experience. The restaurant is perched on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the property of the Post Ranch Inn. The sharp, refined elegance of the restaurant perfectly compliments the spectacular food. We had our wedding dinner there and they did a wonderful job accommodating us during sunset. The tasting menu was thoughtfully planned and executed to perfection. The sommelier's recommendations were excellent. The service was friendly and attentive. Overall, Sierra Mar delivers a world class and detail-oriented dining experience in a breathtaking setting. I would highly recommend to others and will be sure to return.
Exquisite. The plating was superb and the view was breathtaking. Very glad to have made a reservation early as to be able to see past the fog. The walk up and over to the restaurant was interesting. I wonder why valet can’t take your car at the too entrance? Unique in many ways down to the art in the bathroom.
AMAZING service and food! If you have a day with no marine layer, your view will be amazing. You HAVE TO make reservations and there is a $50 deposit placed on you card, which is refunded after your amazing dining experience. Menu changes with the season. Can't wait to go again!
Magical place. Food could be better... Kayla our server might be the best to do it. We were so impressed by her hospitality and friendlyness, knowledge, etc. Her smile and personality glowed. It would of been 3 stars without her. Underwhelming food... but when you have a seat facing out on a cliff looking out at the sunset in the vast ocean. It was superb. Great drinks and wine selection! Perfect spot for foodies and date nights, anniversaries. Do not bring children here! Do everyone a favor lol.
We absolutely love Sierra Mar -- breath taking views, great service and food with a very extensive wine collection. Whether for lunch or a sunset dinner, this is worth a special trip to soak in time on the coast in a tranquil, beautiful setting. The architecture of the building is stunning. Steel, wood and floor to ceiling glass to take full advantage of the surroundings.
My friend wanted to celebrate her birthday and we booked a lunch there. The restaurant is on top of Cliff and the view is spectacular. The cocktail is very good. The food is contemporary American with an international twist. It is definitely one of the best places in the region.
Please see my Post Ranch Inn post. You can’t really review this without the other. For us who just came for lunch it ended up being a whole afternoon experience. We started with an amazing meal with the most spectacular views followed by a beautiful walk through sections of property open for day visitors (which is most of it). Great place! Definitely a must.
An amazing atmosphere with air purifiers at every table. The staff is super nice, attentive, and accommodating to each and every order. My wife and I have severe Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, and Soy allergy and they completely accommodated us through all four courses of our meal with no issues at all. They were able to substitute items as well instead of removing them which made us feel very special and created a super personalized experience.
I've never been to a restaurant as amazing as this one! The meal is amazing, the drinks are fantastic, and the view is breathtaking! We had a set menu which I loved because I sampled items I would never pick! Everything we tried, I loved. The best time to go is an hour or so before sunset so you can enjoy your drink while watching the sunset and have it get a little bit darker for dinner without getting too dark! It was such an incredible experience that I can't wait to visit again.
The view from this restaurant is absolutely amazing! If that was all you enjoyed it would still be worth a trip here but let's face it, there's a lot more to brag about than just the view. The food was incredible; the chef here really knows how to create a unique and wonderful dining experience. Even the ice cubes in the drinks were perfect. Talk about attention to fine details. The staff was friendly and helpful and hats off to the sommelier who was able to find the perfect champagne for our honeymoon celebration. Lastly, even the music play list was superb. Thank you for a great experience!
The atmosphere at Sierra Mar was very romantic and tranquil, surrounded by the peace of the forests and the ocean. The staff were all extremely friendly and the food was great. I rated the food slightly lower only because there were a couple dishes that I wasn't particular about but that is also all about personal preference. They offer a pre-fixed 4 course meal ($145 when we went) with a few courses having a few items to choose from. We had a nice booth seat and caught the sunset, and as we left we looked up as soon as we exited the restaurant and were mind blown to see the Milky Way. We opted to stay in Carmel and drove out to the restaurant which took about 50 min and was also a nice scenic drive out. They provide free valet (no self parking). Definitely would recommend for any special occasions or just a romantic night out.
We went for lunch, you need to have a reservation. To go to the restaurant we passed reception of the hotel, then we took wooden staircase up towards the restaurant. Go for lunch if you wanna enjoy the view, dinner might be too dark. Food was very good, staff were friendly and helpful. Some tables have a nice small balconies, great to take pictures with with the view. Recommended.
Coming all the way from South Eastern Australia, on this visit to Big Sur I decided it was high time I splashed out on a meal at Sierra Mar, having driven by wistfully several times. Despite the extravagant cost, everyone in my party of 4 left feeling it was definitely money well spent, having experienced an utterly unforgettable dining experience. Starting with the beauty of the environment, looking out over the unique loveliness of the Big Sur coast, watching the fog roll in and the sun go down. Then the service - ultra professional, warm not snooty, thoughtful and attentive. And the food. A four course fixed price with added extras if you have a few hundred extra to spend on caviar (not us!) With each dish exquisitely composed and delightful. I won’t go into too much detail - some pictures below show the perfect sourdough bread (I make this myself so I know what I’m talking about here!), a beef tenderloin from grass fed cattle raised in Oregon, local produce and the best IPA we’ve ever tasted. Then the chocolate and pear dessert - possibly the best dessert I’ve ever had. Not sure I can ever top this, but I’ll be squirreling away my pennies for our next trip.
I have eaten at one, two, and three Michelin star restaurants, and if the rating system extended into Monterey County, this place would at least deserve one. This is my favorite restaurant in the world. The view is literally breath taking, and the experience unmatched. You have to visit. It is pricey, but worth it. $$$$$
I came for lunch $75 per person for fresh bread, a large variety of dips, salad, choice of entree (they have vegan options of beyond burger and silken tofu breaded like the cod) and dessert bite to satisfy the sweet tooth. Make a reservation in advance and arrive early to take the walk along the forest to the restaurant on the cliff! Valet parking with self-park lot option available. So delicious the food was incredible and I actually had to take some home for dinner, portions were great. Also the Big Sur VIEWS.
We tried to have lunch here while driving from LA to SF with no reservations and we could not get in. But we were determined to have a meal in this famous restaurant and made reservations while we were returning back. After passing the gate, we drove a mile or so in a winding road leading to the reception area. We were welcomed and our car was taken by vallet; no self parking. We waited at the reception which has a fireplace and a rustic decor. We were shown to the restaurant. There is a small walkaway and a set of stairs to climb to. As you pass the stairs, the view takes your breath away. We wanted to seat outside; the inside seating area has a casual atmosphere. More than the interiors, the food and the view overwhelms the guests. We each chose different items(3 course meal) from the fix lunch menu. The ingredients were fresh, the method of cooking was appropriate and food was presented nicely. All the time we just tried to sunk the views in and live the moment. A well worth stop in Big Sur.
The service was respectful, polite and attententive from valet through dinner. There was lots of rain and fog tonight, so no view, but the dining room is gorgeous and the food was great. The portions could have been a little bigger, but we are on diets anyway 😉. I was looking forward to this and it exceeded my expectations!
Came on a Monday afternoon with a reservation. Loved the view - we got lucky with weather clearing up right before we arrived. We got the prix fixe lunch menu - loved the veggie plate, chicken was tasty, minor complaint of steak being overdone but it didn’t dampen the experience. The chocolate pot dessert was light and satisfying. All the staff from checking in to leaving the facility were so nice. I would definitely come back and think it’s a great stop in southern Big Sur (we were not dressed particularly nice if you’re worried about that!).
Food with wine pairing was fantastic. Can't think of another place I would rather have been. The view was comparable to the food. The sommelier was spot-on with the wine pairings hand the food was by far some of the best I never had. Very attentive staff and attention to detail in every aspect of our dining stay.
We enjoyed room service, breakfast and dinner at Sierra Mar during our stay at Post Ranch Inn for our destination wedding. This was an amazing dining experience in its ‘Alice in Wonderland’ cliffside building surrounded with beautiful glass walls and doors showcasing the Pacific and sunsets that follow. I’m going to start with the most important and noticeable aspect of dining at Sierra Mar. The service. The service here was impeccable. From acknowledging my wife’s food allergy, congratulating us on our wedding, knowing who we were, constantly seeing to our needs and the genuine excitement to feed us – we’ve been to several fine dining establishments but none as welcoming as Sierra Mar. Side note: please thank your damn servicers… Each time I thanked someone, they looked at me like I was speaking a different language. Reference Fight Club by Chuck Palahniuk please. You could tell the employees here actually enjoyed what they were doing, and it felt like family. This was also apparent in the delicious dining. Each course was presented wonderfully and consisted of, if not all most fresh ingredients from the garden on the Post Ranch acreage. Our complimentary wedding dinner was superb, fresh, and each dish presented with enthusiasm. The pasta was so good I needed to willfully slow down. The biggest surprise was our wedding cake. My wife has an allergy to corn, which is much more of a pain than it sounds. Corn is in EVERYTHING. Our event coordinator could not find a bakery to make a corn-free cake. The pastry chef at Sierra Mar agreed to give it a shot. We paid a premium for the cake, but reality blew away expectations. I assumed the cake would be small; she assumed it would be plain. What we got was a work of art that you could tell the baker dumped their heart and soul in. And if they truly did not, I’d LOVE to see something they did. This was a showpiece. Our server was so excited to present our cake you could tell this was special and WE felt special. Everything about Sierra Mar was five-star. I was worried it would be pretentious, but everyone here made us feel like family. I don’t have enough words to describe how great the dining was, how comfortable we felt and the beauty surrounding the restaurant.
Had lunch here today, it was a great experience. you have to make a reservation on the phone before you come here. When you drive to the post ranch road for a few seconds, you will come to this gate almost like a ticket booth, a lady will greet you and check if your have reservation. Once your reservation is confirmed, the gate guard lets you drive to this private road, then you would either park you own car, or drive to the valet parking gentleman at the welcome Hall( not the restaurant yet). Then you can either walk many stairs up to the restaurant, or a restaurant car will bring you there. The restaurant has a breathtaking view of the ocean, looking deep down(maybe 300 meters down) you can see the gentle waives hitting the rocks, but can barely hear the sound. The lunch menus is very simple, I ordered fresh lettuce salad(taste wonderful!), burger (best burg ever!), and sandwich ice cream (it is OK), the cost is $75, plus tax, sounds a little pricey, but hey, come on, consider the extraordinary service and the stunning view, I would say it is really worth every penny. Definitely recommend this restaurant.
The most incredible restaurant I’ve ever been to! Easily best restaurants in California! The view is incredible, drinks were great, service was fast, and food is exquisite! We had a set menu which I loved because I tried food I would never pick! I loved everything we tried. It was also my birthday dinner and the menu had a “happy birthday” stamp on it. Such a sweet touch. The best time to go is about an hour till sunset so that you can enjoy your drink while you watch the sunset and have it be a bit darker for dinner but not too dark! I can’t wait to go again, such an amazing experience.
I have so many good things to say about this place, and not only the restaurant but also the hotel and their staff, even though we weren’t staying there. We had an amazing lunch on the patio. It was a little foggy but kind of cool in its own right as it felt like we were dining in the clouds. The food and service was excellent. However I want to highlight a couple of other amazing things that the staff did too. Often we only remember to review places when we have bad experiences so I want to make sure the staff and administration at the Post Ranch Inn know how appreciative we are of you. First off, upon finishing our lunch and getting our car back from the valet, we realized we incurred a flat tire on our drive through Big Sur. Instead of having us wait hours for the tow truck to get up there, the valet staff wasted NO time in changing our tire for us so that we could drive the car to the rental place to switch our rental car. However it doesn’t end there. Upon getting back to Carmel, I realized I had forgotten my bag with my passport at the restaurant. The staff were so accommodating and attentive to make sure they kept it safe overnight so we could safely drive up the next morning. Upon coming back, the valet had the bag in their hand ready to give to me. Overall I had 2 situations that could have gone much worse if it wasn’t for the staff here. If you’re thinking of coming here to stay or even just for lunch, do it. You won’t regret it! Thank you Post Ranch Inn and Sierra Mar staff for your help and amazing food and service. We will be back, and not just to retrieve our lost items!
We celebrated our wedding anniversary with dinner at Sierra Mar. To say this restaurant is spectacular is an understatement. The sunset views are some of the most incredible in the world and the food is equally as exquisite. We were sat at a corner table overlooking the California coastline. The view was breathtaking. We each had a 4-course dinner. We also opted to add a caviar course and would highly recommend to anyone wanting to dine in full luxury. Each course was a gastronomic feast. Perfectly balanced and portioned. The staff, servers, and chefs provided a memorable dining experience. Our only regret is we only ate at Sierra Mar once. We can't wait to dine again.
We went for our anniversary and it was spectacular. The food was incredible and filling, practically rolled out of there. Service was lovely. The waitress took several pictures of us. The views were probably my favorite part though, especially watching the sunset. It felt like a never ending sunset because of where the restaurant is located and it was completely unobstructed.
Absolutely the best dining view in California! This was an extremely special experience! We were seated at an end table closest to the window overlooking the ocean. The atmosphere in here is warm and inviting. It’s a real treat to walk by and see the chefs working. The food was tasty and fresh but the drink menu was most memorable! This is definitely an our top 10 best dining experiences!
We had dinner in April 2018 to celebrate a very special occasion. The best part was by far the service. The location of the restaurant is stunning, service is very attentive and the food is very good. We particularly enjoyed the oysters starter. The beef tartar was also delicious. The bison steak main course was good, although not as tender as I would have liked it to be. Deserts were also very good. A great selection of wines, also including by the glass. Overall, a fabulous place to celebrate a special occasion, I would definitely recommend. Special thanks to the team for helping make this an even more special night. P.s. Make sure you ask for a table next to the windows to be able to fully enjoy the view. :)
Best lunch in Big Sur. Excellent food and incredible service. A truly magical experience at Sierra Mar. If you are in Big Sur, you have to stop here. The views are unmatched, but the food actually lives up to the scenery. The Highlights: The Food: We had the burger and the steak—both were 10/10. The presentation is beautiful. The Service: Ask for Roman! He provided top-tier service and made the lunch feel super special. The Drink: Do the wine pairing. It matched perfectly with the courses. For a high-end location, the lunch felt reasonably priced given the quality and the atmosphere. It’s rare to find a place that nails the view, the food, and the service all at once. We will definitely be back.
Great location. Really nice food. Unbeatable view. Sierra means “mountain”, Mar means “sea”. That’s exactly where the restaurant is located. Between the mountain and sea. And the food matches the vibe. Chicken and salmon. Salad and abalone. And the taste is unique while delicious. Atmosphere is also great. Nice decoration in the wood. And each food is served in the plate with right temperature. The wine collection is also great. Tried a couple of local products. It’s definitely worth the price. Spent around $250 per person including tips for the dinner tasting menu.
We normally make Nepenthe our go-to when we’re in town, but after a friend’s recommendation we decided to try this hidden gem for lunch. We were lucky enough to snag a last-minute reservation and couldn’t have been happier. The views were breathtaking, the service was exceptional, and the experience was unforgettable. We will absolutely be back!
Wow! What a meal! And the view of the sunset was equal to the delicious food. The service throughout the meal was top level. My husband started with some sort of squash salad followed by a King Salmon. Both were amazing. I got the tasting menu which did not disappoint. Each small, beautiful bite was bursting with unique flavor. The abalone ssam was uniquely extraordinary. I highly recommend for a special evening.
The view at Sierra Mar was awesome and we went on a cloudy day. It would have been that much more amazing on a sunny day. We saw some condors flying around during our lunch. The staff were very attentive. If you’re in the Big Sur area, be sure to stop by. The signs to the parking are weren’t great but maybe it was partially because we were running late. Be warned there is essentially no cell service so plan accordingly.
This place has an unbelievable view and incredible food options. This was a pretty special dining experience.
An exceptional place to celebrate with a chef tasting menu that is inventive especially for vegetarians. Their initial platter of greens salad and pita bread with zaalouk were super refreshing. Then we had a nice and flavorful gazpacho. The vegan burgers served with roasted asparagus and potatoes along with lion's mane mushrooms roast were super good. Go here very hungry or you will have to carry some food back. It took a solid 2-3 hours for our lunch. The service is super attentive and caring. Especially with our dietary restrictions. Oh I didn't mention the place and the views. From the time you leave the car, the visual treat you're in for as you walk to the restaurant is incredible. Our seating by the window looked out to the ocean with beautiful vistas you'll never forget. There is also outside seating but the weather here can be moody even on a perfect sunny day. This place is an expensive experience but totally worth it.
This is one of my all time favorite restaurants on planet earth. There is nothing like it. The combination of quality service and culinary wizardry, set in a God-tier cinematic location is beyond comparison.
The food was amazing, especially loved the sea food course we had, the vibes were impeccable and the service was amazing thanks to Hector, we mentioned a item from the seafood course we liked then he brought us out an extra later on the meal
Had an amazing experience! My husband booked us a table a couple of months in advance, and on 5/27, we finally had the pleasure of dining there. Our reservation was at 7:15 PM, but we arrived early to ensure we found the place without any issues. Fortunately, finding the restaurant was no problem at all. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted warmly and made to feel very welcome. The service exceeded our expectations—our servers were attentive, always on hand, and prepared for each course. Whenever we got up to take pictures, they kindly offered to take photos of us together, which was a thoughtful touch. The views were stunning, and no picture can truly capture their beauty. The ambiance and service were outstanding, making our evening truly memorable. Although the food was average, the overall experience was so enjoyable that we will definitely be returning. Thank you for providing such an exceptional experience!
This last visit, I went with my parents and a neighbor of theirs who just lost her husband. We met on a weekend for brunch. The ocean views from the dining room are as much of the meal as the food. Eggs Benedict had a silky hollandaise and fresh herbs. It was peaceful and pretty, but I kind of wished the portions were heartier for the price.
TO DIE FOR One of the best meals my bf and I have shared — and we have shared some incredible meals! What a treat. Everything top notch from beginning to end. Highly recommend for foodies. And the 180 degree cliffside ocean view didn’t hurt 😆

Delicious food and wonderful service from Hector. He had some wonderful local recommendations as well. It wasn’t busy so it had a nice calm atmosphere.

I went to Sierra Mar for Brunch and dinner while I staying at the Post Ranch Inn and it was incredible!! Dining high above the Pacific felt surreal. The views alone are unforgettable, but the experience goes far beyond that. Every dish was thoughtfully created. The service was impeccable. Everything flowed naturally, allowing us to fully take in the flavors, vibe and views. This was such a memorable experience that I absolutely cannot wait to experience again! 🤩

Probably the best view at any restaurant, full stop. Food was good, but expected a little more given the price. Surprisingly the vegetarian option for dinner seemed like an afterthought. Service was slow, especially considering the menu was fixed, but hard to complain when you've got those views.
Came here for my gf’s bday dinner. Had the pleasure of getting a patio table with a heater. The views are breathtaking — best dinner view I’ve ever had. The service and atmosphere are top notch. Be aware that it is a pre-set menu; $145 PP at the time I went. The drink prices are steep too — $16 for a NON-alcoholic cocktail seemed excessive. The food is just OK. Nothing spectacular. You’re basically paying for the view, service, and atmosphere.
It all comes down to the location and the delightful view. If the weather isn't favorable, dining here might not be the best choice. The food is rather unremarkable, with a very basic menu and average flavors. However, it's important to note that the prices are quite high. As mentioned, you're really paying for the view rather than the food.
The view from this restaurant is absolutely amazing, but unfortunately the experience didn’t match it. The food was inconsistent—some dishes were overly salty, some even cold, and sometimes the flavors within the same dish didn’t come together well. The servers kept trying to clear plates while we were still eating, which felt rushed, and we had to refill our own wine glasses. Service overall felt unfriendly; the hostess who seated us didn’t even smile. The food itself was just okay, nothing that really stood out or felt special. With such a great location, I was hoping for more.
The views were breathtaking! The wait staff were super friendly and attentive! The drinks were excellent! The food was prepared very well, except for some overcooked steak that was ordered medium rare, but cooked well done. If you have the chance to go, I would do the dinner instead of lunch due to the limited menu. And don't forget to check the specials before you commit.

If you have the chance to go, I would do the dinner instead of lunch due to the limited menu. And don't forget to check the specials before you commit.
Disappointing. The room is gorgeous. The staff is very friendly. Shout out to Chase who makes a great drink. The food was good, not great. The annoying issue that makes it just average was that the wait staff would remove plates before everyone was done eating. Just not cool at a restaurant of this caliber. Felt very rushed. Some of the food was very good others average. Missed the view due to marine fog. But that’s not why I am downgrading it.
The service was impeccable as were the stunning views. The planned menu was poorly done based on the cost. The best part of the meal was our Old Fashions and the bottle of Wine we brought.
Stunning Views, Mediocre Dining Experience, Friendly Service Sierra Mar offers a cozy atmosphere with astonishing views, especially if you arrive before sunset. The drive to the hotel is scenic, but once you turn onto the street leading up to the property, the lack of lighting becomes a problem at night, making the drive a bit stressful. Upon entering the restaurant, the initial impression was underwhelming—the reception staff were cold and came across as rather arrogant, which didn’t match the otherwise inviting ambiance of the venue. Once seated, our server provided a much-needed friendly and welcoming touch. Unfortunately, the Christmas four-course menu, priced at $175 per person, was disappointing and felt grossly overpriced. My wife’s starter salad consisted of a few basic leaves, something you could whip up at home in minutes. I had the foie gras, which was overly stretched and lacked the richness one expects. The celery root soup with truffle was lukewarm and underwhelming—the truffle flavor was virtually nonexistent. While the Wagyu beef main course was well-cooked and tasty, it lacked the sauce we ordered and needed basic seasoning like salt and pepper to bring out the flavor. Dessert was enjoyable but basic, failing to elevate the overall dining experience. Adding to the discomfort, the room itself was quite cold. We ended up moving to a table near the fireplace, which improved things slightly. In summary, Sierra Mar is a beautiful place with a cozy atmosphere and incredible views, but the food lacks finesse and does not justify the exorbitant prices. It felt more like an overpriced, basic dining experience than fine dining.
We were greeted at the driveway by a warm and professional young woman with a clipboard who thoughtfully wished me HBD and directed us to the top of the hill to the valet. We drove up and were met by an employee who made unclear gestures and appeared to be dismayed with us in a way that one would expect if we were strangers trying to park behind him in his own driveway at home. When we could finally hear him, he didn’t offer to valet the car and instead told us to park at the self park below. Okay, sure. We walked up to the first building where two employees were talking. One told us where the restaurant was from there with the general vibe that she was going to be friendly about us interrupting her conversation. It wasn’t rude but it wasn’t welcoming either. We walked up the hill where a lovely, friendly hostess took us to a great table with as perfect of a view as possible with there being some fog. The sommelier took the bottle of wine we brought to decant with no good grace but we didn’t think much about it at the time. The server was great and detailed the courses of the $185/person fixed price menu to us. I ordered their take on the Negroni and it was superb. The sommelier returned. What on earth was happening with the sommelier? She was ignoring my husband and simmering with hostility towards me. It was, by far, the strangest dining experience I have ever had. I tried to make light conversation by asking her if she’d been to the (highly-regarded) winery our bottle came from which was apparently offensive because she said “no” in a fairly disgusted tone and made sure we knew her focus was really European wines. Lol, well didn’t we get big-timed? We smiled. Things did not improve. When she returned to pour more wine I could see her in my peripheral vision staring at me with stone-faced disdain. This happened numerous times. My husband, who is not inclined to notice, noticed. I truly began to wonder if she was mistaking me for someone else because it was unaccountable and baffling. Did she think I was someone who was mean to her in high school? I couldn’t imagine she could be that angry that we brought our own wine. She was going out of her way to be rude. At one point, I was trying to be friendly and she turned around and walked away in the middle of my sentence. The food was very good with the mushroom course being particularly delicious. The sweet corn dessert was also a standout. They put a tasteful candle in it which was a thoughtful gesture. All in all, I would have given it four stars except I really wasn’t expecting or wanting open hostility from a sommelier on my birthday. My husband recounted the experience with his friend who is a restaurateur and Meadowood alumni and he just groaned. The Post Ranch has been mostly cut off from half of California for a while now and perhaps they are going a bit stir-crazy but the reopening of the 1 is now in the near-ish future. I hope they can dig in to the customer experience and realize that, at their price point, every employee interaction with every guest matters if they are going to regain the luster they had when we stayed there back in 2017.
Average at best. Definitely not worth the $185pp price tag. We arrived early because we wanted to have a cocktail before dinner. The bar is small with limited views. The bar staff was bickering with each other the entire time we were there, which wasn’t a great vibe. The restaurant itself is nice but dated. The furniture and decor could use an upgrade given how they market themselves. The view is pretty cool. We were shown to our table. View from our seats was nice. Our server came over to let us know if was a tasting menu and asked if we had any allergies. We later realized other people were ordering ala carte but were not given that option. We probably would have done that had we known. Food was decent, but not extraordinary. The congee and lamb were probably the best items. The guinea fowl broth was tasty but - a really weird course in my opinion. The service was subpar. At this price point, I’d expect the server and waitstaff to be all over us. We barely saw our server the entire meal, and had to flag her down to ask for more wine. The guy who delivered the food gave very cursory explanations of what we were eating. It would have been nice to have a menu to refer back to as we were eating as well. Overall, I wouldn’t go back. There are much better dining options for less money.
We were really looking forward to dining at Sierra Mar, but the experience fell short of expectations. The restaurant is clearly designed around its spectacular view, yet in the winter months when dinner starts after sunset, that view simply isn’t part of the experience. Without it, the atmosphere feels a bit flat. There was no wine pairing offered, which was surprising for a restaurant of this level, and the service felt unenthusiastic, polite, but not particularly warm or knowledgeable about the dishes. The food itself wasn’t bad, but it lacked inspiration or excitement. I was a bit put off by one course, a small cup of hen consommé, because it felt more like a placeholder than part of a fine dining menu. We’ve been fortunate to dine at some truly exceptional restaurants around the world, and while Sierra Mar wasn’t terrible, it didn’t live up to its reputation. Overall, it was an underwhelming evening at a place that seems to rely a bit too heavily on its view. Though I’m sure it is spectacular when visible…

Average. Not staying at hotel- Forced into a over priced tasting menu
This place is overrated. Two stars are given for the nice view, but the food is average and overly priced. $160 per person after tax! I would recommend Nepenthe, 10x better view and much cheaper and more fresh and better food! We saw whales in Nepenthe too from the back patio.
This restaurant has a fantastic view….but not much else going for it. We visited this restaurant because we wanted to look into staying at Post Ranch and after visiting we don’t have much desire to do so. The view is absolutely spectacular. When we arrived the hostess seemed scattered like they weren’t ready for us (though we had a reservation) they walked us over to a table set for two but we had a party of four….they half setup the table and then left. We had to get napkins and glasses ourselves from the next table over to complete setting up the table. My partner inquired about an item on the beverage menu ‘Macallan Ice Ball Experience’ the waiter seemed confused and said it’s just one whiskey poured over a ball of ice…he the came back and said it was actually 3 different tastes…but called out you can pay for more if you wanted. We were confused and still have no idea what this is or what makes it an ‘experience’. We ordered our beverages - little to no garnish and my lavender lemonade was very bland and I doubt had any lavender in it. We ordered lunch which was pre-fix and family style. The pita was delicious and the dips were pretty good. The salad was drenched in dressing so if you aren’t a fan of that it wasn’t great. Our mains were ok at best. I got the burger which didn’t have much flavor, was slightly over cooked, and I would say from the place and price just not up to par. My partners chicken was moist but bland. This was followed by a modest dessert which was ok. Service was friendly and polite but truly they seemed confused when we asked a question and didn’t seem to get things right given the expense of the place. The experience really led me to scratch staying at post ranch off the list. We had just come off of a stay at Ventana and the food and experience was far superior.
Amazing views and stay at the inn overall, but don’t expect a lot from the food at the restaurant. Flavors and course menu are dated and poor quality. Average service. Good wine list, but definitely not worth the $$$. Order a cocktail, enjoy the view, then drive up to Carmel for some better options.
I ate here 5 times over 3 days & experienced breakfast, lunch, and dinner. This is a summary review. Great - the view & location Mediocre - the food. All fine, standard fare, but nothing new or inventive or noteworthy. People talk about this place being in contention for a Michelin Star, but it’s not even at Bib Gourmand level. Everything was just fine. Bad - the service. Some of the most inattentive waitstaff I’ve encountered. Servers did not check in mid-meal to see how the food was. Pacing of dishes was very off. At both dinner seatings i sat with an empty drink glass for >15 minutes. Just really uncaring.
Spectacular views. 3 course prix fixe lunch. Service overall warm and attentive with caveats (requests may or may not be retained). The starter was excellent, the dessert was fine, but the main (a burger) was tough and bland.
Tl;dr this is a bad restaurant featuring incredible views. The food is bland, uninspired, and mid. Nothing was remotely memorable except for the bread which they don't even make in house. For the price point, it's atrocious value and quality doesn't even come close to a restaurant at a quarter of the price. The truth, I rarely write negative reviews like this because know how hard it is to operate a restaurant but it was quite clear that the kitchen doesn't take care in its craft nor respect its diners and believes they can get away with putting out grossly overpriced mediocre food which is counteracted by the epicness of the view which are absolutely incredible. The interiors are well designed. Specifically, the salad was boring and underdressed, the soup overly relied on tang and acid as a flavor with undercooked vegetables, the fish was overcooked, the meat was slightly underdone (as somebody who likes medium rare) and sides from the main came out room temp v hot. Dessert was good. Sort of an end to end a display in utter lack of care which is especially unfortunate in a food mecca such as California. I'm writing this long review not to be cruel but to warn genuine lovers of good food that this is a waste of stomach space but more importantly as a wakeup call to the kitchen to step up their game and stop assuming most people taste with their cliff-striken eyes but with their mouths as well. There is simply nothing worse than a far below average meal at an expensive price point which is exactly what this place is. Check out the view, take a picture, and then go eat elsewhere until they get it together.
Over a decade ago I had one of the best dinners here. Things have definitely gone downhill. I brought my wife here for an anniversary lunch. The views are still stunning but man the food and service have gone downhill. We had their prix fixe with a glass of wine each. The starters were a Mediterranean salad that had way too much flavorless dressing and a garlic hummus with pickled vegetables. The pita with the hummus was greasy. For our mains we had salmon and bavette steak with roasted vegetables. They put chimichurri on the steak that was completely unnecessary. Dessert was a panna cotta that left my stomach in knots because all the dairy. We arrived at 1pm and the place was not crowded yet the service was slow. The time between courses felt a little too long. Overall the meal was completely overpriced for what was served and nothing was outstanding as one would hope for a $300 lunch. I get the cache of Post Ranch Inn but truly the food could have been much better. Sometimes simple, local ingredients just don't need the sauces and the dressings.
Very mediocre experience for a high end, price fix lunch menu. Food was not individually tailored to the specific protein ordered, nor was it served individually. The food was OK, but nothing to recommend to a friend. Some staff were friendly, others were just there to work. The table decor looked like a sad piece of trash. What happened to a simple garden flower in a vase?! The view from our table was beautiful, but more spectacular views can be found just north or south of the restaurant at roadside pullouts. I get the feeling this place is just resting on its outdated reputation. No more a destination restuarant. Fourth and last time eating here.
The setting at Sierra Mar is truly spectacular: the dramatic ocean views from the cliffside perch and the elegant space make it a memorable location. The staff were friendly and made us feel welcome throughout the meal. Sadly, the food didn’t match the beauty of the surroundings. The menu felt surprisingly basic, more like standard diner-style dishes than the refined, seasonal cuisine I’d hoped for in such a special spot. Ingredients seemed lacking in quality, and the overall execution was uninspired for the price point. This was a genuine let down. The breathtaking location and good service deserve a kitchen that matches their ambition. Having traveled extensively, Sierra Mar ranks well below comparable venues (in Japan, France, Portugal, Australia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand etc…) that successfully pair extraordinary views and/or settings with truly memorable food. After our meal at Sierra Mar we went for a stroll in what they call the “chef’s garden” which is a collection of sorry flowers and weeds. This isn’t a garden that is professionally looked after and I doubt it produces anything that can be used in the kitchen. While the views and service are outstanding and worth experiencing, I left very disappointed by the meal.
Beautiful views, which is what one is really paying for during this dinning experience. Menu is underwhelming, quality of food is sub par. Burger meat was below Costco quality, dessert so hardened (must’ve been old), felt I should be wearing hockey gear to cut it. Whilst I understand the cost of the location, etc., would have loved a reason to go back.

Terrible, over priced rubbish!!! Possibly the worst “fine dining” experience of my entire life?! The rooms on-site cost between $2k-5k a night. How about an intelligent trickle down and hire a real chef who CARES? Every single dish was bland and mediocre. Staff were great, sunset was great…..FOOD WAS LITERALLY A LAUGHABLE WASTE OF TIME, ENERGY AND MONEY. Go to Deetjen’s instead.
It was dark and rainy when we visited, so we missed out on the views. Seated by a window, it was chilly. The bartender was great; friendly; happy to make suggestions on drinks we might like. Five stars for him. The fixed price dinner menu had options that sounded good and looked good, portion size as expected, but taste didn't live up to expectations. A couple dishes were negatively appetizing, others were fine. Nothing stood out as something I'd want to eat/experience again. For a fine dining experience the way this is described / promoted, I expected to enjoy the food and service more. Maybe if you are a guest at the inn service is different.
I visited the restaurant at Post Ranch Inn for lunch on November 15, 2025. The view should be good if it's sunny and the food was okay.Unfortunately, the way the restaurant handled payment completely ruined the experience for me. Because of a power outage, the staff said they could not use the POS terminal. Instead, they asked me to write my full name, full credit card number and CVV on the back of a receipt so they could process the charge later. I specifically asked if this was safe, and was told it was, so I reluctantly did it. After I left, I received a voicemail from the restaurant manager and messages through OpenTable saying they “still need your credit card information” and asking me to call back and leave my card details with the hostess. The wording and tone made me feel as if I had not paid or was trying to avoid paying, even though I had already written down my full card number and CVV for them. I was traveling and on a flight, so I couldn’t respond immediately, but when I landed I called back, provided the expiration date, and also expressed how uncomfortable and upset I felt about the whole situation. The manager hang up the phone immediately and didn’t even let me complete my sentence. I fully understand that the restaurant should be paid for the meal. My issue is how my card information was collected and how I was treated afterwards. Writing full card details (including CVV) on the back of a receipt and then repeatedly calling and messaging for more “credit card information” feels extremely unsafe and unprofessional, especially for a property at this level. Because of this, I cannot recommend this restaurant. ———updated after restaurant replied in google—— Thank you for your reply. I would like to clarify one important point. In your response you mention that “forms were provided” and that it was my “preference to provide [my] information on the back of [my] receipt.” This is not accurate. And I didn’t get any apologies from the restaurant during the calls. Don’t make it sound that you were sorry at that moment and you didn’t provide any other payment method and you asked me to write down the information not at my preferences. During my visit, I was only offered the back of the receipt as a way to provide my card details. No separate secure form or alternative method was shown or mentioned to me. When I specifically asked whether writing my full card number and CVV on the back of a receipt was safe, I was told that it was. Under time pressure and given no other option, I complied. In addition, the follow-up phone call was very upsetting. When I tried to explain what had happened and why I was concerned about the way my card information was handled, the tone I received was dismissive, and the call was ended while I was still speaking. Being treated this way, after I had already provided all the information requested, made me feel as if I was being blamed for a process I did not choose. My concern has always been about data security and how my card information was handled, not about paying for the meal. I appreciate the apology for the outage, but I also hope the public record reflects the facts accurately and that the restaurant will review both its payment procedures and staff communication so that guests are not asked to handwrite full card numbers and CVV on a receipt, nor made to feel at fault, in the future.
What can I say! I love the view and the average, but it could be better. Me and friend booked a table at 7:45pm for a dinner and we came early around 7:10pm. However, we had to wait until 8:30pm for my table to be ready which was 45m past my reservation. Not even an apologize from the receptionist, we were just waiting and hopelessly waiting outside and it's getting cold and colder. Finally got our table at 8:30pm and they put us in a right next to the door when people walking in and out the balcony to check the view. Feeling we were in a Zoo not a fancy restaurant lol 2.5 hours from where we live to get there, the experience was the worse than I ever had. Food came out around 9:15pm and we just wanted to finish it and drove back as soon as possible (which took me another 2.5 hours) $185/ person plus tax and tips. Food was average. Service at the table was okay If you're thinking about looking this place for a special occasion, please save your money, time and energy for better options out there. We left and barely enjoyed the dinner, both of us felt stressed after the long wait of times.

I recently visited Serra Mar at Post Ranch Inn for drinks and dinner. The ocean view is absolutely stunning and is easily the best part of the experience. The food was fine, but not exceptional. What is unacceptable is what happened at the end of the meal. After first presenting our original itemized bill and taking my card, our server, Tommy, added an additional 26% gratuity without disclosing it. He then brought back a non itemized receipt and verbally told me that tip was not included. That is intentionally misleading. When I reviewed the total and confronted him, he became visibly nervous and tried to move the conversation outside (so other guest didn't hear) instead of explaining the charge clearly in the restaurant. This is not a misunderstanding. It felt deliberate. I cannot help but wonder how many other guests this has happened to who did not carefully review their bill. At a property as expensive and well regarded as Post Ranch Inn, this kind of behavior is completely unacceptable. Transparency with billing is the bare minimum, especially when guests are already paying premium prices.
