I love Amato's as not only are their orginal sandwichs great but I must say that pretty much of what they sell is awesome- Like for i.e.they have single sized pieces of cakes and omg they are to die for. Awesome & very great food.
I love this place. Great staff, always fast when the other Amatos are sometimes slow, always get the order right. Even got me q cup of filtered water to go.
Have been there once to pick up a convenient 20 oz soda and chips. very nice place to do business. Preferred over the area food businesses around them.
The best Amatos in the area. Fresh food, friendly staff, and cheap as ever prices. Also they always seem to have freshly baked on site cookies. mmm.
Since Being Pregnant I Eat At Amatos Often Because Everything Is Cut Fresh At The Moment Your Sandwich Is Being Made. Instead Of It All Sitting In A Medal Container For God Knows How Long.
Amazing Amatos! Catered party once again! Out if staters loved loved loved the Italians! Professional, friendly staff and fresh great food! Highly recommend! Great job Thank you so much!
Best Italian Sandwiches ever ! Fresh bread , cut small vegetables, fresh tomatoes ,lots of olives ..and yummy pickles.... get the Amatoes whoppie pies, you'll be amazed.
Great quick food. Only place I know of where you can just walk in and grab hot (very tasty) pasta ready to go.
Amato's is the perfect place for both Italians and pizza. Consistent product and great taste makes it a winner every time.
You want a delicious pizza and to your liking in 20 minutes this is the ideal place, I am grateful they are friendly and punctual.
Great takeout experience. Ordered online and was able to quickly pick up my meal. Delicious and hot, plus the cashier was kind and gracious to me and everyone else. Complies with mask guidance.
Busy location, great food, this is one of my go-to places when I want something quick and hearty. Sometimes they can get a bit too busy and forget to cook a call in order, but it's nothing surprising and the food, especially the calzones are consistently yummy.
Christine is awesome! She takes pride in her work.
The service here is what I'd expect of a family pizza place: you enter and order as part of the family. The preparation was on site. The taste was delicious. I highly suggest the Cheese Pazzo Bread. Even the veggie panini was filled with flavor.
pretty straightforward... if you want a sub, you'll get your money's worth here. Good portion, decent price and made to order. Typically quick, even at busier times, and friendly service.
I get the calzone like pretty much every time it's always bomb. You can get smokes here to which is really handy cuz otherwise it might just be the Big Apple down on Park
Great food as always.
There really is nothing like a real italian, and if youre unlucky enough to have lived in Maine, when Amatos is always a good convenient choice, and then, only visiting? I miss the iconic italian. Dont be shy with the salt pepper and oil!
Best chicken Caesar wrap ever!
The cashier was great other people behind the counter didn't seem interested in helping with orders that were coming in from the customer on the other side of the counter. It makes you feel very uncomfortable
Stop by aMattos today on the way home from the airport as always, and had an amazing experience! The girls working here, know exactly how to make all of the options and do a great job at it! They are very friendly kind and I will certainly be back!
I love this Amatos, I frequently order their ham Italians, and every time I am very happy with the quality of the vegetables and the texture of the meat. The bread is also perfect and you can tell nothing is old. They have a friendly staff and the prices are very reasonable. Portions are big and they have other snacks and desserts like chips and Whoopie pies. Yum! The parking lot is small and the dining area is too but the dining area is clean. I recommend eating here.
Food has always been good! A slip on orders every now and then but no business is perfect! Over all they've been really good go there everyday for lunch!
Staff always pretty friendly Their breakfast sandwiches are excellent and the price is reasonable Good selection of snacks and soda Pizza Villa gets my vote for best subs in Portland, but Amatos is great for the money Can't think of anything bad to say and have been going here for years. Well done.
. Great sandwiches and the pizza is some of the best I have had in years. I prefer to request a well done pizza due to how generous they are with the toppings. It's a must try if driving through the area or a daily lunch.
I went to Amato's during a blizzard. They were fully manned. No one complained. They were fast and efficient. Did I mention that their food is amazing? I always dream of Amato's when my boss drags me to Wendy's.
Amato's is a sandwich shop, that makes the best Italian sandwiches in the state of Maine. They also make pizza, and spaghetti, and they're a convenience store. They have a full range of subs pizza, and other foods. They also sell beer, wine, and soda. The service is very fast, and very good.
I have been there only at least three times for the past year, and I must tell you it was terrific. Those Italian Sandwiches are fantastic. No offense to you, but I usually go to Fresh Approach on a monthly basis for a couple of Italian sandwiches. I am thinking of going there sometime tonight to treat a couple of my friends for some Italians---or whatever they would like. In the past, the traditional ham Italians are the most affordable to me. I wouldn't mind trying a little something different. I'm game for just about anything, but those Italians are really good---and most importantly, I happen to live close to Amato's on St. John St. I have had some Italians from Fresh Approach, from various supermarkets (like Shaw's and Hannaford), from DiPietro's, and occasionally from my nearest Amato's. I cannot decide which place has the best Italians, but next to Fresh Approach, Amato's is totally awesome. If there's a chance (never say never), I would look forward to go there tonight and buy some dinner for myself and my friends.
The cheery gentleman at the register made my day.
OG amatos is a stale in Portland, I always make a pit stop here when I’m passing through. Their pickles and Kalamata olives are my favorite
The real Italian sub is killer, it is the best sub ever. Every time I visit Portland ME I have to go to Amatos! They also have Humpty Dumpty chips which are better than ANY other chip out there!
Great subs! Visit my Alaskan lodge and rent a cabin at Gwin’s Lodge Cooper Landing Alaska. Pre-Statehood and restaurant and bar. Kenai Peninsula just south of Anchorage 2 hrs.
My first Italian in 10+ years, and it did not disappoint.
Oh my gosh! My mom had Amatos FedEx an overnight Italian sandwich box so I could have a taste of home in NC, it was AMAZING! It arrived super fresh. Can I buy the very same ingredients in NC you ask, absolutely. Does it taste the same? NO, it doesn't. Thank you, Amatos for offering the overnight shipping of my lifelong favorite sandwich.
Best Italian sandwich in Maine! This shop does it the old fashioned way. They slice the vegetables directly on your sandwich and their bread is extra fresh.
Still super delicious as usual. Still go here all the time. Always great. We stop here all the time great pizza and great grinders. My husband gets a small vegetable pizza and loves it . I get vegetable stuffers their dipping sause is awesome and for 6 it's $4.99. We've had the Italian which is delicious as well. Supper yummy.
Just had a Large BLT and it was great: everything was fresh tasting. Just had their Sesame noodle salad last evening and it was great as well - bought more for this evening, Butterscotch pudding just right - not overly sweet. Customer service very good. Thank you.
We ordered delivery to the hotel so service and atmosphere were not scored. The Italian sandwich was delish, super well made and very reasonable. The stuffers were great also. And a whoopie pie which was on our list to try out....very good also.
Ordered pizza and whoppie pies for dinner. From out of town and ordered through doordash. They were super busy but my pizza still arrived warm and was delicious. Right amount of crust to toppings ratio. Super filling. Enjoyed trying my first whoppie pie ever and let me tell you it was delicious! Would love to have found them sooner so I could have gotten another one before heading back home. Can't wait to come back to get another.
Amato’s is the home to the original Maine Italian sandwich, from which all others Italians are based on. This is half of a small sandwich: American cheese, ham, onion, green pepper, pickle, tomato, olives, salt pepper and oil. I always order it with extra ham and olives. Absolutely delicious. Even though it is a cold sandwich, I let it rest for about 10 minutes to ensure the oil seeps everywhere before enjoying it with Humpty Dumpty BBQ chips and a Diet Coke; surprisingly, Amato’s does not sell Pepsi products. Amato’s makes their sandwiches fresh, to order. Rarely do they get it wrong. If you’re traveling through or visiting the Portland area, make sure you try Amato’s.
Best local Italian Sandwiches! They use sour pickles and real kalamata olives. The pazzo bread is a great starter too!
Very impressed with this family owned business. They worked as a team and very polite. Sir/ma'am. Thank you. Will be returning next month. Happy new year
The 45 minute wait felt like forever, but the guy trying to steal a bottle of wine made the wait go by quickly. Regardless of the wait and shenanigans, the food was still very good
I cam here later on a Saturday night. The grilled chicken alfredo was creamy, but almost too much alfredo. The place itself was clean, open, and organized. The cashier and kitchen staff were very attendant.
There are two places in the Portland area for a real, genuine Italian sandwich. Amato's and DiPietro's. Everybody else is trying to catch up. Then there are the "sub shop" places that don't even try to make a real Maine Italian sandwich. A "submarine sandwich" is NOT an Italian sandwich. The pizza and other stuff isn't bad either.
Service is very, very slow at this particular Amato's. Food is still good. EDIT: customer service reached out to me to inquire as to how they could improve the experience. Amato's is definitely a company that cares about the customer experience.
Great sandwiches. There is staff but I wouldn't call them friendly. Best to know what you want ahead of time, get in and get out.
Slightly above average pizza joint and subshop, With A wide variety of pizza's calzone's hot subs, cold tubs. And and has very good consistency throughout, It's many locations in the state of maine.
I've been to several Amato's in the area and this was my best experience of any. The food is decent, the prices are mostly reasonable, and the speed is as quick as I'd want to still get freshly-made pizza. This one in particular had more space for waiting and was brighter than others I've seen. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Amato’s is the king of no-frills sandwiches and pizza. Portions are great and the food tastes delicious, but expect plenty of grease. The tuna Italian, steak and cheese, and chicken parm sub are some of our favorites for lunch, and frequently lead to leftovers. The pazzo bread and stuffers are great value and could easily be a lunch of their own if ordering solo. The wraps are tasty, but not my favorite compared to the regular sandwiches. Prices are extremely reasonable, especially compared to a lot of other sandwich spots on the peninsula. The staff is busy but always friendly, and my orders have always been made on time. Parking is plentiful at the St. John’s St. location, and you’re usually in and out in moments anyway.
Pretty good food!! I highly recommend that you try their eggplant parmigiana sandwich and their whoopie pies. Specifically the chocolate chip whoopie pie. Those are unbelievable!! ((Stay away from their tuna sandwiches because it tasted very strange and the olives that are standard to every sandwich did NOT pair well with the tuna and gave the tuna a weird texture and taste!))
Ordered online and was ready when I got there. I got the Wednesday pasta special with two meatballs for $9.25 and it was delicious.
The food is pretty decent but the lady who works here is sooooo miserable. She is probably in her 40’s and sooooo rude to everyone. She makes comments, and says things under her breath every single time. I never have seen her smile, her energy is so draining to even encounter with. She’s also rude to other younger employees.
Food was great. Unfortunately, the employee at the register was not paying attention to my order. After repeating back to her a fairly simple modification (steak and cheese with no peppers), the prep time was very long, and when I received my sandwich, it still had all the peppers one might normally receive. Upon returning the sandwich, I again, had to repeat my request not just to the same employee, but made sure her colleague who was actually building the sandwiches heard and understood. By the time the oven finished, the small rush of customers had drained out, and I was left standing to watch as my sandwich came out of the conveyor oven and sat at the end while the employee who took my order originally had come down the line to chat and distract the others who were trying to work. One had to ask me what I was waiting for, and said to the others "Hey! Wrap that! He's been waiting for it." At least everyone was friendly about it, but the whole visit took much longer than it normally would or needed to.
I love the food They need to SLOW DOWN take better care of customers, the orders & it would be GREAT Italian just like they say!
My son was at Amatos on Saint John Street yesterday around 4 pm. He ordered spaghetti with meatballs, the special, got home no meatballs ! No bery good. We have never had a problem getting everything right. Yet yesterday we didn't get the meatballs.
The female manager working on 8/21 was very rude and did not appear to in anyway hide the fact that she hates her job. Then (outside of the control of the establishment) a flannel wearing hipster of an Uber Eats driver comes into the lobby and gets about 3 inches from my face and gives me what I can only call a mad dog prison stare down whilst I am standing in line. He Then proceeds back away slowly while maintaining eye contact. Finally he releases my gaze and picks up his order. By far the most surreal experience I've ever had in an Amotto's. Side note the chicken parm was good and my order came out on time. Just don't expect any semblance of customer service from the manager and maybe bring a shank with you for protection before ordering your next Italian.
The food is alright. Most of the time my order is correct but the service suck. Most of the people have bad attitudes and don't shower it seems. Guess you can't expect much for it being st John st next to a check cashing place.
I don't like they use Canned Mushrooms, canned mushrooms should be used in soups, purees, not calzones & pizza That's not fresh authentic Italian, That's from a can Italian & slime texture is gross
All I wish is if you don't like your job don't take it out my family. We didn't realize that black Greek olives were put on the Italian and ask right as the worker put a few on not to have any. A very dirty and annoyed looked was given to my wife by the female worker. Not cool.
Usually never had a problem with them and their spaghetti is great but today i got a spaghetti with meatballs but it came without meatballs! I was way too hungry to return so i just ate it as it is. Also, it would be nice if they attach the receipt to the take out bag because when i told them my name, the employee brought me the food and just look at me and we had a staring contest for about 5-10 seconds and asked me if it’s mine. How would I know if it’s mine because there’s nothing that say my name or my order on it. From the look of the bag i assumed it was my order and did told them my name. When i got home, it was a spaghetti so i was happy but really bummed out when i didnt get the meatballs with it. Looked up my receipt online and i did ordered it correctly.
I went to your website menu. I picked out the combo pasta bucket( 4 sausage 4 meatball and pasta) price on menu was 19:80. I get to your St. John Street location only to be told it is $22:95! Is it fair to charge the higher price when that is not the price on your web site?
Traditional American Italian fast food. Nothing I've had here has been the "best ever" but everything tastes good, felt fresh and left me feeling like I'd eat it again. Prices are fair.
We've gone to this amatos for years and it seems like they've just gotten worse and worse. Tonight they managed to mess up a simple sub and when we politely asked for the correct one (for us to have to drive back out again for) they were very rude!! They used to be so much better.
They didn't seem to know what they were doing. Three employees took forever to make two sandwiches, even though the place was empty. They also forgot to include the oil I asked for.
Don't hate but they did mess up. Moon sandwich was awful and when complained the lady was rude and didn't care. She did finally give me an Italian in place but had to fight for it. Just wanted to make it right.
Don't give senior discount..... Otherwise food is real good... Also wish they had more side's like..fried mushrooms, spinach,
our pizza was over cooked , not good for my first experience , they also forgot to give back our card and lost it and we had to go back. :/
I love Amatos but they allow the person making food to only wear a face shield. So I would 100% recommend if you like people who are around people all day breathing just directly onto your food. Otherwise I would recommend another place.
I eat here all the time period but, I may eat here a little bit less now. if at all. It's very simple. If you're going to have employees wear gloves then do what your supposed to. Wear them consistently, change them in between handling money and handling food, and just change them frequently! I came in there earlier, and I paid in cash. As I was fumbling with my things, putting my change in my wallet the gentleman that cashed me out took my cash, kept his gloves on, and then went and touched food without changing his gloves. I just gave you dirty money! Gross! That is why people get sick. This isn't the 1st time I've seen this in your restaurant.
The people were nice is probably the only good thing to say. The wait was long, whatever. The selection of cold prepared things was dismal. I ordered a simple wrap with chicken salad, a few veggies and cheese. Got chicken and lettuce and that's it. The chicken salad was basically salty mayo stew with chicken chunks. Hands down worst chicken salad of my life. If you don't have a lot of time to be able and go back to have them fix their mistakes, I wouldn't bother going in.
Very displeased with the service at this location. We went up to order and the gentleman had AirPod in and had to ask us to repeat ourselves several times. Then when we went to pay the girl behind the counter was playing a game on her phone and half paying attention to us while we were trying to pay. While waiting for our order we watched her ring others up while still playing the game. It’s a shame because the food is very good but the service is lacking.
First off I love Amato's. I did not have a good experience at this one. I ordered a regular ham Italian, asked for extra onions (didn't get). Usually Amato's tomatoes are bright red and delicious. Tomatoes on my sandwich were yellowish. The roll seemed fairly fresh. I no longer live in Portland but, used to frequent Amato's on India St. Never disappointed at that location. Also, staff not real friendly except the girl that rang up my order. Disappointed.
Got our orders completely wrong...didnt notice until we got home... The manager on duty was cleaning the lobby and complaining about how stupid her workers were. Not really impressed with the amount of money we spent
I placed an online order and got ze drinks and I had 3 set aside and she wanted to accuse me of already taking the 3 without even seeing me leave the store with 3 drinks, I was thinking of buying the third but absolutely not.
I kinda think if you don’t close till 10 and someone calls at 9:25 you don’t tell them they can only order cold stuff. Bad way to keep customers.
Manager sucks I asked to make a fresh salad and she said I can pick from the cooler their made fresh daily. Well I cant have onions so I wont be back
They took advantage of my 80 year old mother and sold her an $88 salad that could feed 100 people when she only needed something for a potluck with 20 people. The person who took the order refused to apologize and the manager was so fake it made me sick. I don't recommend any one do business with a company that only cares about profit.
If you like hair in your sandwich then this is the place for you Amato's on St John street where the last bite of your Italian sandwich has glorious long hair from the top of her head loved it had so much trouble trying to get my money back I waited over a week until I found somebody in charge some of the worst customer service in the world is it this store and this company I called corporate they really don't care I never heard back from their district manager who's supposed to call me right back left a message never heard anything I'll never step foot in this store again you shouldn't either!
The female making my sandwich was touching her phone while she prepend the food. Yes she had gloves on , but what good are they if your touching somthing dirty! She also dropped one of the prep gloves on the floor and just put it back in the box WTH!!!
Ordered a moon sandwich just no tomato and extra cheese and the employee used a spreader tool and slapped a huge gob of mayo on the bun then took that mayo covered bun and twisted it into the container of chopped onions contaminating the rest. The sandwich was made carelessly and very sloppy with no thought towards food safety.
Went in to pick up a couple of ham Italian sandwiches and was very disappointed to learn that they would not put different toppings on each half of the roll. The entire sandwich is fixed one way, the way you order it and that's it. Think twice before you go in if you plan on splitting a sandwich with someone. Pretty ridiculous if you ask me.
Just ordered a simple vegetarian sub. Asked for xtra cheese. They put none and asked for mayo and they doused it in oil. Read your slips. This is not a hard sandwich to make.
REAL ITALIAN BULLSHIT !!! Seriously if you even thought about being "authentic Italian " you would make your own bread. Those pathetic rolls you have SUCK !! I attempted to take a bite out of what I ordered a Classic cold cut Italian and ended up just having to use a fork to eat all the peppers and lettuce that doesn't even stay on the subject because the rolls are too small!!!.
Good food but I wouldn’t recommend going here unless you like not getting what you ordered. They have consistently messed up orders, first was a cold cut panini with no cheese they put cheese on it and when asked to remake it the second one was mostly burnt on the bottom. Later that week I ordered two Italians with pickles, extra olives, banana peppers and green peppers. The first sandwich they gave me had no banana peppers so I gave it back and they remade the entire thing and when I got home there was no olives. When I called to say something the manager was very rude and made it sound like we were just trying to get free stuff from them.
Soggy wet nasty bread. Eaten a minute after purchase. They must have premade soggyness that they pull for your order. Literally saw my italian wrapped up, went straight to my vehicle and ate immediately with oil on the side. Without the oil it was so soggy that the bread was inedible ruining the whole experience. Won't be back.
Ordered a classic cold cut italian, ended up with a original Italian sandwich. The sandwich consisted of one slice of ham and one slice of cheese, it was barely recognizable. I was born in New York city, I have been a Chef fo more than 40 years and the Bread you are using is not Italian as it should be soft inside and crunchy on the outside. But as your cashier told me you have been in business since 1902, so you must be doing something right.
Not only are the sandwiches of poor quality, but I have had several experiences where my order was not made as I asked. Best of all, each time I've written to the office about my experiences, I NEVER even get an acknowledgement that they received my notes. I realize lots of people like this place, but if you've never been, try somewhere else. You'd be doing yourself a favor.
Quality has gone down during the pandemic. My husband and I ordered two different takeout sandwiches last night and ended up with diarrhea. Hot sandwich was burned. Been customers for a long time and never had this happen before. You guys can do better!
Worst Amato's I've ever been to. The employees were rude and uninterested in customers, our order was made wrong (Buffalo chicken was grilled chicken) one wrap had a piece of hair in it rolled up in the wrap 🤮) and the pudding in the cold case was frozen in the middle. Social distancing was a joke! We were there for over 20 minutes waiting, doing our part to keep distance (pregnant daughter) by constantly moving away from people, yet they were walking right up behind us looking over our shoulders. Not once did we witness any cleaning in high touch areas other than behind the plexiglass. After spending way too much money on food (that used to be so good) and then having to throw more than half of it away, I'd highly suggest saving your money and go some place else.
They've messed up (missing or incorrect items) my orders many times over the past few months. Be warned: if you order through a delivery service, they will probably forget some of your stuff. Every delivery I've received has been fully sealed, so it's the restaurant not the drivers messing up. Order from somewhere else!
Sad but I used to love it here. They used to have the best sandwiches. Portland has seen alot of these types of stores disappear over the past 30 years. Growing up every neighborhood had at least 1 if not 3. Now I camt even find one that has fresh bread fresh veggies and decent cold cuts. I bought 4 large Italians Sunday and we got home to find that one had the tomato top on the sandwich. Who the hell eats the tip piece of the tomato and the bottom was on the other one. The other two were odered no onion extra pickle and labeled as such. Both loaded with onions and no extra pickles. . The bread wasn't the freshest either. This is first time that I've had a problem with bread at this location. I've noticed that chain stores like to freeze their bread and you can always tell. I've noticed a big difference in quality since they franchised the name. It's too bad because they are the inventors of the Italian sandwich. I'll have to try the other store that recently reopened since remodeling after a fire. Hope to see better quality next time I take a chance at this location. This as far as I know the original family running it since I can remember. They used to be the best.
Incredibly rude service. And our order is a absolute mess! We ordered though DoorDash, and our DoorDash driver had to call us to let us know that our order couldn’t be made and they we needed to cancel it ourselves, and that was the second time it happened to him that night. We’ve ordered though DoorDash before and when restaurants haven’t been able to complete orders, they’ve called DoorDash themselves and DoorDash reached out to us and the restaurant canceled it. We’re currently trying to get our money back and cancel the order, even though your employees told our driver they wouldn’t make our order. When I called to ask why our order couldn’t be made, the guy that answered the phone literally told me when I started talking “that was really loud” and I was like “…sorry?” And he came off very annoyed by my voice.. he also had no idea what I was talking about when I just wanted to know why the order couldn’t be completed. He put me on hold and came back and said “we can’t make the lasagna because we don’t have it” when I started talking again he acted like I was loud again and so beyond rude, like me speaking into the phone was upsetting him. The food my boyfriend ordered showed up, with a note that said “sorry no lasagna” after we were literally told by our driver to cancel the order. but we have no refund for the lasagna, and a drink we didn’t even order. The DoorDash support had to call and confirm part of our order wasn’t made. It is not the DoorDash drivers responsibility to call and let us know the order isn’t complete. It’s the restaurant’s responsibility to contact DoorDash and let them know, so they can let us know. That’s how’s it’s happened to us before. I will never order from this location again. Mostly because of how the employee spoke to me. I ended up hanging up because I couldn’t even tell if he was still talking to me or someone else, because he trailed off with a what he was saying and didn’t really care in the first place.
I won't get a sub here again. Ordered the chicken finger sub and the bread basically disintegrated before I opened it up- I live 3 blocks away. I don't have any idea how this bread is supposed to hold together a parmesan sandwich, that must be a disaster, but as soon as I picked up this sub it all fell out and apart. Guess I'm eating with a fork. Not a sandwich.
