Stopped by for dinner and watched the UNC vs Duke game. Atmosphere and vibe was awesome, even though I went to NC State and was just there for dinner. The food was amazing as well, I got the ramen and the broth and noodles were fantastic. Their sushi was really good and dessert options were limited but delicious. The staff were also excellent and really made the whole experience super enjoyable. Overall, great dining experience and I noticed all the UNC fans there really enjoyed cheering on their team in a nice environment.
Hands down the best sushi I’ve had. Anytime I go somewhere else for sushi I compare it to Spicy 9!! Been coming here for about 10 years now and I have never had a disappointing meal. You can’t beat the BOGO deal and daily drink/beer specials. The sushi is fresh, has quality ingredients and comes out quickly. Service is always good and the restaurant is nice and clean and very spacious. I would go weekly if it weren’t about 50 mins from me :)
Solid lunch place. I get the BOGO rolls. My kid likes their boba a lot too. The service is always good. I do know this place gets stupid busy sometimes later in day… dinner, drinks, etc. Maybe plan ahead if you’re going at peak hours. The sushi is good, not great, but it’s Franklin Street, not Okinawa ;)
I had a wonderful time with my family at the restaurant. The service was quick and attentive and the food was tasty. We ended up ordering the combo rolls, a bowl of ramen, and sesame chicken. It was plenty for three of us. The menu included lots of different appetizers with Thai and Japanese style meals. They have a bar and drinks available as well. Parking seemed easiest from a nearby parking garage that led up to the building.
Excellent food and service, This is my son's favorite place. He often would get a few sushi rolls with others in his apartment complex and get them delivered. I'm not a sushi fan but he loved his and I enjoyed my hibachi steak. The soup and egg rolls were good as well. Will be back on my next visit to see him for sure.
Nice casual sushi spot in Chapel Hill. Large dining room with plenty of seating as well as seating around the bar/sushi bar. Great menu with lots of choices. The sushi rolls are buy one get one. My favorite was the "spicy 9 roll". The server I had was excellent and my food came out really fast.
I’ve eaten 3x @ Spicy 9… pleasant and courteous staff…. dishes I tried included sushi/sashimi, orange chicken, calamari, and General Tso’s chicken… sushi/sashimi was excellent and very fresh… orange chicken and general tso’s chicken both very good, and not drenched in too much sauce as many other places do; I liked the orange chicken a little more… the real pleasant surprise was the calamari - prepared with a crispier coating then I was used to, but now my 2nd best calamari from samples all over the world… highly recommend for Japanese, Thai, and Chinese cuisine
We love this place! We’ve never had to wait longer than 10 minutes on food - apps, sushi or main courses. The friendliest staff! If you’re lucky enough to have Bee as your waitress, you’re really lucky! Couldn’t recommend this place more. Food is incredible and consistent!
A Chapel Hill landmark. Just go upstairs, order a Blue Cup (32oz) of your favorite beer and sit back and relax. Great spot to enjoy nice weather.
Super chill vibes. Great place to go for a lowkey hangout. Love the cups.
Chapel Hill staple. Live band on the weekend sometimes ($5 and a huge vibe). $10 for the “blue cup” and it’s beer good for 2-3 people, tbh. Been to the trivia on Thursdays 8.30pm. Also good vibes. Outdoor space is super nice. Generally quite college-y, nothing too fancy, but it’s a nice gathering spot. Outdoors > indoors, but there are seats everywhere. Pretty dead on like, a Monday. $5 blues cups on Tuesdays.
This is THE classic and enduring Chapel Hill college bar. Even as an adult, this place screams fun. It has outdoor space, indoor space, great beer selections, and the best marketing concept ever with the Blue Cup! Same size, same price, no matter what you choose to put in it. I hope this place is around for many generations to enjoy.
Definitely a college bar. However, I feel like I would've missed out on an experience integral to this community had I not stopped here. The beers are huge (blue cup) at decent prices. Honestly decent beer selections. The college kid working the bar is a beast. The place went from dead to packed (I mean it, we were packed in like sardines) in a matter of minutes. He was a boss though and handled everything very calmly and still managed to refill our beers timely. I definitely would recommend coming here if you're in the area.
Home of the blue cup! Great college bar. Has the ubiquitous college bar atmosphere and the prices to go with it. You really can't beat the blue cup on price, as you get so much beer with it. I can see the weather being an issue here as most of the seating is outside. The bartenders were fast, friendly, and didn't stiff on the pours. Come grab a cheap beer here!
Stopped here for dinner on our daughter’s recommendation before heading home after her 1st semester in Chapel Hill. I can see why she loves coming here with her friends - generous portions, excellent food, and reasonable prices. The salmon sashimi was much better than I expected at the price point, as I usually have to pay about more for that quality. It’s crowded, as one would expect at a college town restaurant, but not too loud or cramped. Overall, well worth a stop if you’re in town and like sushi.
I was in Chapel Hill with the family, and we decided to try this place because my daughter had a taste for sushi. Read this review understanding that I am not a frequent sushi eater. The biggest hits that everyone loved were the Pot Stickers and the Gyoza dumplings. I had the poke bowl. I got the salmon before I knew anything with a star meant served raw. I still enjoyed the bowl, but the seaweed salad taste was a bit strong for me. I tried some of the dragon and flamingo roll. I personally like the dragon roll flavor better. One tip is to watch where you sit. Condensation from the vents can fall from the ceiling at table 35. There is a high chance we will be back, especially if we feel in the mood to try a little something new.
I have drove past here 900 times and thought I should try it one day. We'll I finally did and sad I didn't sooner. Nice atmosphere, food is a bit different in coloring than some other places but don't let that fool you! I got the chicken lo mein and it was quite delicious! My son enjoyed his sushi and my mom loved her hibachi steak. Parking downtown isn't exactly a picnic but I would definitely go back.
We were here in the afternoon and did not get to experience if late night but I know I WILL be back when I’m in town. Only problem is zero soap in the bathroom. I get that things are broken in the bathroom and you have hand sanitizer at the door but a $.50 thing of Dial soap in the ladies room would be nice!! Will be back!!!!
The Outdoor Space is a Chapel Hill Community Treasure. 5 stars. Indoors I can touch the ceilings. Thats 2 stars. This is an Undergraduate Staple along with Pantana Bobs when I was around 25 Years ago. A must visit bar while you are in Chapel Hill to meet undergrads. The smallest draft beer is 32oz.... the signature cup of a black out night to come. Overall it gets 4 stars, this was a hard decision. The bar is a 3. Just know biger better bars and resturants lie ahead in your future! The outdoor area under the Magnolia Trees is special. As I noticed all the needed new multi family investment next door built 50' high. I bumped my rating to a 4 star because of the location and Trees and the value of the land. This is a "if its not broke dont fix" I get it. However I would add landscaping and more lots outdoor lighting. Outdoor area needs $10,000 investmest.
Food looked very tempting as we entered the restaurant looking for some lunch options around 3pm ish on a weekend. Lunch is till 4pm. The waitress came over quickly to take the order. She looked a lil grumpy. The Sushi is buy one get one free - both orders served in a single plate (as u can see in the pics) we ordered 2 sushi plates -flaming hot sushi & spicy tuna roll. The other order was also flaming hot and Rock n Roll spicy sushi with Tuna. We ordered the Pad Thai lunch box(chicken) which was def. bang for the buck (it comes with a salad, small regular California sushi rolls, 2 pieces of fried rolls & the pad Thai noodles. The last dish ordered was Panang curry with chicken ordered as Hot spice level with no green beans. The order was brought fairly quickly but the panang curry had a sweet taste (wasn’t to my liking at all had a very sweet taste) the dish was saucy with few basil leaves, few chic pieces and some red and green bell peppers with a small serving of sticky rice (pl see the pic). The chic pieces looked scarce in my opinion. Family liked their spicy sushi rolls and pad thai lunch box. They couldn’t finish it though as they felt it filled them up fairly fast given that they ate just abt few sushi rolls surprisingly. The lil saucer is for pouring the soy sauce for dipping your sushi roll. The food was OK in our opinion. Not one of the greatest thai foods comparatively! Also after few hours we felt like our tummies were lil upset with the afternoon lunch. Overall I would rate it a 3 as the spice level was not hot but sweet, the pad Thai taste was just tasteless (albeit looked very delicious) salad was watery and the waitress waited to see if TIP was being added which I personally thought was outright rude! Also a student discount of 10% is offered so make sure you ask because they don’t offer it readily unless you ask for it! Not super impressed with this eatery wouldn’t try it next time when I am around that area! Didn’t stand up to the taste and expectations of a good Thai restaurant unfortunately !
40 oz of (admittedly mediocre) draft beer for under $10 is hard to beat. Unfortunately, you'll have to contend with everyone else able to do the math on that, which is pretty much anyone in town with a passable fake. Mostly an undergraduate crowd, but in an excellent location, with a really nice backyard setting. If the weather is good, it's worth seeing. Be aware that there will be little to no available seating at peak times.
spicy 9 has somehow messed up my order or given me bad food almost everytime. the only reason i come back is the location and the fact that my friends like the prices. also THIS IS NOT LO MEIN. even the crappiest asian restaurant would make lo mein better than this. extremely disappointed.
This is my first time eating here. Ordered through Uber eats. I ordered the app spicy 9 sampler and bowl of the hill. Sampler: first, I opened the plate and opened the sauce. I noticed a hair immediately in the sauce. At this point, I would usually not eat any of the food because it grosses me out, but I unfortunately am in the hospital with my dad and just spent $42 to have two things delivered here. (Here all day) so I gave the food a chance. The crab ragoons are very interesting. I’m sure with the sauce they would have been better, but the inside was different than any other crab ragoon I have had before. Not bad but not good either. The entire sampler was pretty neutral. It wasn’t horrible but it wasn’t good either. (Again, we were down a sauce. And sauce can definitely change the game) The bowl: the bowl at first glance came with a lot of food. First bite was way tastier than the sampler. Great amount of tuna. The avocado was brown. The spring mix seemed wilted. The sauce is good and sushi rice consistency was great. I gave it a 2/5 due to the hair, wilted ingredients, and lack of flavor in the platter. I may or may not try this place again(I’d get different items)
Worst ‘teriyaki chicken’ I’ve ever had. The knife they provided couldn’t even cut through it.
Good atmosphere, good service. Unfortunately awful food. I had the tempura bowl. I got two tempura shrimp, a 1/4 slab of almost raw carrot, and a mushroom slathered in so much thick, greasy tempura batter — more corn dog than tempura, really — I couldn’t eat it. It came with two deep-fried gyoza that spurted grease when I bit into them. The California roll it came with was fine, so I ate that and my rice. It also came with a small salad—iceberg lettuce and a large slab of cucumber about 1/2 and inch thick with no utensils to cut it, all slathered in so much dressing I had to scrape it off. The dressing was poorly made and chunky. I ate about 1/3 of the food before I had to call it quits, all for the price of nearly $25 with tax and tip. Do not recommend.
I hadn't been to spicy 9 in over 5 years, and from my prior memories the food was good. My recent visit not only left me with an empty belly, but also a bad taste in my mouth. I traveled over 45 minutes to get my mother dinner for her birthday. We ordered out, and I got the food as soon as it was given to us. I tried the bulgogi beef, which is normally my favorite and between the lack of seasoning and preparation it was beyond mid. But I pressed on. I tried the hibachi next, beyond disgusted... the meats texture was questionable and it was cooked TO THE POINT OF HOCKEY PUCKS. Incredibly hard with lack luster beyond belief. It's a shame when streamed onions is the best thing on the plate. One guest couldn't continue with the meal due to the texture and threw away 78% of it.....Despite my dishes being nothing to write home about, i only hoped my mother's sesame chicken was decent as this was her only birthday request. She, being a woman with no complaining bone in her body- was turned off. She stated "it's a bit dry". I offered my "extra" hibachi sauce to possibly remedy the issue. Again, hockey pucks that ended up in the trash as the meat was "too hard to chew". $70+ down the trash. Do your self a favor and drive down the road a bit further for a decent meal.
I usually enjoy Spicy 9, but I wanted to share a serious warning so others can be cautious. Last spring, I ordered the Tar Eel Roll and ended up getting Norovirus, which completely knocked me out for days. I can’t say for certain what happened in the kitchen, but the timing and symptoms made it very clear that it came from that meal. I know food issues can happen anywhere, but when it comes to raw or lightly cooked seafood, freshness and handling matter a lot. My experience left me really wary of ordering eel or any high-risk items here again. Just sharing this so others can be careful with what they choose from the menu. I hope Spicy 9 takes extra steps to monitor food safety because no one should have to go through that.
Waited 30 minutes after being seated, not a single worker came by to offer water, to take our order or to even say hi. Multiple times did I notice a server casually standing at the end of the sushi bar just on their phone and talking with other coworkers. I’ve been to this restaurant before. Wasn’t impressed with the food the first time but this was the dagger.
I've been a fan of Spicy9 for years and have been many times. Today I informed my server I has a severe avocado allergy. I did not order or consume anything with avocado, but within an hour began having an allergic reaction. I do not blame the server, he was nice and I believe he made note of it. But please, take allergies seriously.
Terrible at checking id’s. Getting this place shut down
Last weekend a friend of mine went there and was forced to leave because “he was to drunk”. But instead of letting him sit there and wait for his Uber, the staff grabbed my friend and proceeded to him up and force his off the premises. Not only were they extremely rude, but left bruises on my friend. Not to mention my friend was the only gay guy in the establishment that night. I would never recommend this place to anyone, but would advise management to rethink what kind of standards they hold their employees to because putting your hands on someone that is not fighting back is unacceptable.
Flat beer in big plastic cups so it gets hot and a plastic taste before you can enjoy it. This place has to be managed by someone who got the job after the place has already gained its popularity and lore. I say that because there is absolutely no motivation to promote or increase business. Instead the social media account seems to be used for passive aggressive complaints about other bars in the area. Other bars that didn’t seem to respond even thought the easiest response would have been well you would be a better bar if you sold Rumple Minze. But we all know why you can’t. Anyways cool place, awful manager. I also heard he hates the environment.

# He's Not Here: Un Pilar de la Vida en Franklin Street, Chapel Hill
