We had a great graduation lunch here before the ceremony. The whole fish was excellent and had a great seasoning. Everyone loved their beef course as well. Service was fantastic also. We enjoyed the June bug drink , similar to a Pimm’s Cup.
Actually really love this spot. Upscale Asian fusion food. Unique items on the menu. Steak, dumplings, catfish, salmon bento box & poached pear mousse were my highlights. Candle lit ambient environment. Really nice outdoor seating in the summer. Warning: many things have cilantro. Perfect for a celebratory dinner.
Delicious! The BBQ'D COUNTRY PORK RIB was the best pork I’ve had … maybe ever. Such a delicious sauce!!!! Service was EXTREMELY attentive - with multiple people making sure we had placed our orders/our water was full/etc. The Hot Chocolate Cake was divine. As someone who recently moved from ATL - this restaurant exceeded my expectations and made me excited to try more restaurants around Chapel Hill. It certainly wasn’t cheap - perhaps bordering on being over priced but who am I to dictate their menu!! The food doesn’t disappoint.
If you’re looking for fine dining in Chapel Hill the answer is Lantern. We were simply blown away by the quality, presentation, atmosphere, and service. Our server Sophia was very attentive and knowledgeable, and the back patio was the perfect ambience for our dinner date. Stars of the show were the spicy cucumber soup, pork & chive dumplings, and the mint chocolate ice cream 😍😍😍 (best mint chip ice cream I’ve had in my life) HIGHLY recommend!!!
Loved this place. The atmosphere is classy, warm and homey. The ladies who served us were well dressed, especially the one in training. The food was unique. I loved the crispy shrimp , the dumplings, the steak. I would have loved my salmon little bit more cooked but that's my fault. Loved the crispy green spices, never had them fried like that. The bill was hefty but it was so worth it. Loved the drink. The ginger was very present!
Lantern is a delicious Asian fusion food in downtown Chapel Hill. Everything was well-balanced in flavors and exquisitely presented. Two small plates and a large one were adequate for my partner and me, leaving us room for desserts. I would love to visit again!
My boyfriend and I had a lovely Valentine's Day date at Lantern. The service was great and food was delicious. Would recommend to a friend and definitely come back another time!
Truly a wonderful restaurant whether we want a sit down dinner or a evening at the bar with friends. Menu has an Asian flair with a seafood, chicken, pork or beef options as well as vegetarian options. I especially love the dumplings Great selection of wines by the glass or their specialty cocktails.
Been here twice for work. It is small place. You can't bring a big group unless you call ahead. This is very intimate so you better like your co-workers or your date! The food & service hands down are the 5. I will def come back if my work travels brings me here again.
Updating this post since they have gone back to full service: you MUST visit this restaurant! One of our absolute favorites in Chapel Hill. We have since moved to NYC and it could hold its own there 100 percent. We miss it. The first time I came to Lantern in August 2019 I was absolutely blown away. I was excited to take my husband so once they opened post-COVID we were eager to book a spot in their outdoor patio. They have a new system where you order entirely on your phone (although a waiter does come check on you and bus the table). The food was still good but I felt like it wasn't up to my last experience. The pea shoot scallion dumplings were my favorite of the night, in large part to their miso sesame dipping sauce. We also got the fried okra but it tasted kind of cold when it arrived. The fried cauliflower was not particularly stand out. The crispy catfish I expected to be more flavorful but it was bland (I got a whole fish the first time which was bursting with flavor). The real winner of the night was the Peach Melba dessert - that was a 5 star and not even usually big on dessert. I still love Lantern from my original experience so maybe it was an off night - hoping things turn around and recognize the hardship they've been through! Pic - Junebug cocktail (similar to Pimm's cup, and appetizers).
I don't give out a 5 star rating lightly. We went here for dinner on a Thursday evening and everything was perfect. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was amazing. We started with the summer rolls, which were delicious. They came with a very good sauce. I had the crispy catfish, which was flavorful and delicious. For dessert we shared the chocolate cake with coffee ice cream... And I wished I had it all to myself. The chocolate cake was a bit like a souffle, with a soft gooey inside. It is a little pricy but worth it.
This was a top ten meal for us! The food was flavorful and surpassed the same version of anything we have had. The lamb shank was amazing. We also enjoyed the Turkish wine. Absolutely exemplary all the way around.
The food and service were both excellent. We had a variety of lamb, seafood, and vegetable dishes and all were cooked just right and flavored very nicely without completely dominating the flavors of the various foods themselves. Everyone enjoyed the hummus and bread so much that we ordered some to go also.
Very tasty! I forgot to take pictures of the entrees. The humus and falafel were so good!! I ordered the fried eggplant dish...I can't remember what it was called, but it was awesome! I got the caramalized layered pudding thi g for desert. It was kind of like flan. It was great. I would highly recommend this reseraunt and I will be going there again for sure!
One of the best spots on Franklin Street! Whenever I crave authentic food, I come to Talullas with my friends. The atmosphere, food, and service are always top-notch everything you want in one place. I usually come on Fridays or Saturdays for their special Iskender dish, which never disappoints. The salads, tea, and especially the kazandibi dessert are absolutely amazing. If you are looking for something unique and truly authentic, this is the place. I will definitely keep coming back!
I treated my friend to dinner here as a thank you for taking my grad photos. We were seated right away. Service was friendly and checked up on us throughout. We shared the mezze tabagi and I ordered the sultan’s delight with filet mignon. Both dishes were delightful. I also tried a piece of my friend’s adana kebab and although I usually don’t like lamb, this was delicious. We ended the meal with Turkish coffee. Furthermore, the decorations of the restaurant was beautiful. Although the restaurant was on the pricier end for us, we would definitely come back here for special occasions!
I’m wowed. The sauces are both flavorful and light. The falafel and fritters are highly recommended. The batter is light, not oily, but still melts in your mouth. The flavors are rich, and honor the raw ingredients. Highly recommended the seabass and lamb shank. The lamb shank is the definition of tender, melting off the bone. Below there are fries and a slightly sweet tomato sauce, as well as a creamy mushroom sauce which compliments the lamb delightfully. The fish has a perfect grilled flavor. The other dishes tasted great as well. The scenery, and music is beautiful, especially if you get the booths :). All around an amazing restaurant, a hidden old gem.
I recently dined at Tallulas and had an incredible experience. We started with the Mezze Tabagi and Manti, both of which were amazing. The flavors were vibrant, and the bread served alongside was fantastic though quite dense, it perfectly complemented the dishes. For my main course, I opted for the Yaprak Doner Kebabi, which is only available on Fridays and Saturdays. It was well worth the wait! The flavors were rich and delicious, making it a standout dish. To finish, we indulged in Kunefe paired with some Turkish coffee. The kunefe was crisp and sweet, however there was next to no cheese it was all phyllo dough so that was disappointing but the coffee was perfect end to the meal. The ambience at Tallulas is warm and cozy, and even though the restaurant was quite busy, the atmosphere remained relaxed and conversation-friendly. It wasn’t loud at all, which made for an enjoyable dining experience. The service was equally fantastic, everyone was friendly and attentive. Overall, I highly recommend Tallulas for an authentic and memorable dining experience in Chapel Hill.
Some of the most incredible hospitality I’ve ever experienced in the restaurant world The owners are so incredibly kind and they’ve done an amazing job of curating a cozy, authentic, charming atmosphere for restaurant-goers. They really care about your dining experience and the food is amazing. At the end of our dinner, our waiter Ali even brought out a delicious baklava on the house. Was an amazing experience and can’t wait to go back again.
It is easily the best dining experience on Franklin Street and likely the best in all of Chapel Hill. I highly recomend this place to anyone traveling and searching for authentic Turkish cuisine. The food is lovingly and thoughtfully prepared. The service staff treats you like family, and it's clear that the business is also family owned. I came in on a Tuesday with a friend to have drinks and a few bites to eat when I say they kept the kitchen open for 45 minutes after close to accommodate us. This level of courtesy is something I have never experienced anywhere. This restaurant deserves your patronage and support. Get the lamb, and there's a sauce it's red and oregano and garlic based. Get it too. If you see me at the bar I'll take a glass of any red because the wine game is fire. You're welcome.
Easily one of my favorite restaurants in the RTP area. The ambiance is excellent; servers are kind and knowledgeable. A great place for date nights - if you’re lucky, sit in one of those booths in the back! Zero complaints on the food. I don’t think you can go wrong with any dishes, and I highly recommend the lamb shank special - it is fall-off-the-bone kind of tender. Can’t wait to go back!
Absolutely delicious! We had never tried Turkish food before, and now we don't know how we could have gone without for so long. Everything was cooked to perfection. The meat was so tender that you did not need a knife. The flavor was superb. Everything was hot and fresh. At first we thought the portions were small, but we actually left feeling full. Service was great. Everything was just fantastic.
Forgot to take photos of our appetizer and entrées but EVERYTHING we had was delicious. We started with the Mezze Platter which included some of the best Patlıcan Ezmesi (Smokey eggplant dip) I’ve ever had. I’m gluten free, but my husband and daughter raved about the fresh, hot, crusty bread served with our meal. I had the lamb shank special of the evening which fell off the bone and was superb. My husband enjoyed his Adana Kebabi and daughter had the Balik Böregi, also delicious. For dessert we had Turkish coffee and shared the Kazan Dibi and Crème Chocolate. And on top of all the great food, the Turkish decor and ambiance added to the evening. One comment on the service, this was a very busy restaurant, the staff (family?) were stretched thin. Definitely a place to enjoy a relaxing, leisurely dinner with good company.
We have a new favorite restaurant in the triangle!! Best dining experience in a long time. This place has a great atmosphere with a well designed environment that compliments their theme and menu. Speaking of the menu, it is very well balanced with small dishes, salads, Turkish pizza, and more substantial entrees. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and quantity of food. We ordered the dumplings, Zucchini fritters and Turkish salad to start with the lamb shank and whole bronzino. The land and beef dumplings are to die for! So much flavor in a very small bite. The fritters were just ok and would not likely oder those again. The salad was excellent. The entrees, especially the lamb shank, were off the charts. That lamb is one of the best composed, balanced and executed dishes I've had anywhere! It will haunt my dreams. Can't wait to return again and again.
Good here was delicious! It was a first time having Turkish food. I loved it, had two of the lamb dishes. Both were tender and flavorful. The bread that’s served will you wait taste great. Along with the oil based herb sauce that’s placed. First time coming here and I must say I was impressed. Wrong be the last.
Enjoyed a fantastic meal on our first visit to Talullas. Good service, although the staff was very busy on Saturday night. Thoroughly delighted by the bread and sauce served to the table before the meal, as well as the peach nectar drink. The meal was fresh and flavorful. Will definitely return!
Outstanding. Hubby says it’s his new favorite Chapel Hill restaurant & he’s pretty picky. Food and ambiance was great. Portions are generous. Staff was attentive. We had an early lunch so thankfully it was quiet when we arrived and of course got busier as we left. Parking is always an issue on Franklin but there is street parking & a small public lot directly across the street from them.
Fusion food with local fresh ingredients. We went there for dinner. Not too many options on menu which is not a bad thing. Ordered chaat and salt-pepper shrimp for appetizers and both were amazing. Crispy cilantro with shrimp reminded us of some authentic Indian food from back home. Chaat was different than typical Indian style chaat. Great combination of ingredients. For mains I ordered vegetable stew. Wife and kid ordered whole NC wild fish. I loved the veggie stew but fish was interesting. It was whole bass with head and bones. It’s took a little bit of work to get the flesh. Taste was decent and our least favorite item for dinner. Dessert was amazing. We had Hot chocolate cake and warm yuzu pudding. Both were delicious. Service was excellent. Took a little while to find parking. There are two paid parking lots next to the restaurant.
very nice! relaxing atmosphere. it was dead but food took a while...everyone ordered dumplings/potstickers
Good quality cooking, dubious if it’s worth the price. I had high expectations for Lantern as it is the only restaurant currently open in the Triangle area with a JB award. The pan-Asian Southern concept is also quite interesting: it allows the restaurant to get away from authenticity if it allows for better flavor. Although, I doubt if that decision really pays off for Lantern (the fried okra with tomato chutney is markedly inferior to any Indian or Southern preparation of fried okra). The rest of the dishes, however, were executed perfectly. The noodles, in particular, were a highlight: it’s as if the very essence of an oyster mushroom was distilled into the sauce. Similarly, the dumplings were cooked to a perfect toothsome level and the sesame dipping sauce accompanying them was outstanding. All that said, I’m still unsure this is worth the price - there are certainly better restaurants in the Triangle area that you don’t have to pay this much for. Worth a visit, but not more than once.
My recent dining experience at Lantern in Chapel Hill was nothing short of delightful. From the delectable cuisine to the captivating ambiance, it was an evening to remember. Let's start with the highlight of the meal - the bite-size Korean fried chicken. It was simply out of this world delicious! Each crispy morsel packed a punch of flavor that left us craving more. It's definitely a must-try dish for anyone visiting Lantern. As for the drinks, I opted for the Late Blossom, a perfect spring cocktail that blended vodka, lillet blanc, lychee, and orange blossom into a refreshing and fragrant concoction. It perfectly complemented the vibrant flavors of the meal. Speaking of which, I savored every slurp of the ramen with pork belly, bok choy, and an egg. The broth was rich and flavorful, the pork belly perfectly tender, and the addition of bok choy added a refreshing crunch. It was a bowl of comfort and indulgence. What truly elevated the experience was the ambiance of the back room where my friends and I were seated. It exuded a sense of intimacy and mystery, making it the perfect setting for romantic dates or intimate gatherings. The dim lighting added to the allure, creating a cozy atmosphere that enhanced our dining experience. Overall, Lantern offers a memorable dining experience with its exquisite cuisine, inviting ambiance, and impeccable service. While the meal was fantastic, there's always room for improvement, hence the four-star rating. Nevertheless, I highly recommend Lantern to anyone looking for a culinary adventure in Chapel Hill.
This restaurant charges 6% for what they called a kitchen fee!,… what is the reason behind this?,.. it comes in as a surprise , …. And it was late when I learned about this,..
Food was really good. It is definitely an upscale Asian restaurant. Menu is not large but full of flavor! The ambiance was great for a small group setting. Would recommend a reservation.
I sat at a bar table with a chair that was on the verge of collapsing. People passing by constantly elbowed me in the back. The menu was basic, and the food was bland. Overall, the experience was okay at best.
Great atmosphere, excellent service, okay food. The fish was cooked whole, which I'm definitely not used to. If it blew my mind I wouldn't have cared, but I've had much better fish that didn't involve mouthfuls of fishbones. The pork and chive dumplings were good, not great. The cocktail I got (scotch, port, egg white, some other ingredients) was EXCELLENT. The chocolate cake and peanut brittle ice cream dessert was so good we ordered a second one.
Loved the ambience and the vibe. Cocktails were great. Fried okra was a disappointment. Not a fan of their entrees too. Overall what's a restaurant with good ambience and okay ish food ?
