Update: So, now I'm a bit addicted to Acai bowls, haha. And I've tried them at 2 other places (Everbowl and Playa Bowls) and Purple Bowl is the best!! Original Review: Ok, I will admit this was my first Acai Bowl (How I got this far in life without one is a mystery...). It was an incredibly delicious and layered taste explosion. The creamy iciness of the base (Acai with Hemp protein and hemp milk) layered with crispy granola, sweet berries and bananas, chocolate chips, coconut and honey. Oh my! I thought they did a fabulous job. All of the ingredients were fresh, creamy and crunchy, not overly sweet. A huge plus was the ability to BYO, so I could maneuver around my dietary intolerances/allergies. I actually have not had an Acai Bowl prior to this because there were not enough base options, with nuts in too many places. The hemp milk and protein were a game changer for me. I would have liked sunflower butter, which would have made it perfect (only nut butters). The atmosphere is fine, seating is comfortable. I prefer a cozier atmosphere. The acoustics weren't great either with high ceilings and cement floors. But it was fine. But sure I'd go here to curl up with a good book though All in all, this was a positive experience and I would come neck when I am in the area.
I was introduced to The Purple Bowl by my kids, who had been raving about how good it is. Thinking that perhaps they were simply new to the taste of açaí bowls, I was absolutely delighted to discover, once I visited, that it was the BEST açaí bowl I’d ever had. Things I LOVE about The Purple Bowl: 1) The opportunity to get an açaí base with protein in it, 2) A fantastic selection of fruits and toppings to satisfy whatever my tastebuds are seeking, 3) Counter Culture coffee, 4) yummy avocado toast, 5) great indoor / outdoor aesthetic 5) WONDERFUL service from Paula, Kevin, Grace, and Team. It’s ALWAYS a delight to visit!
Awesome açai bowl place. Absolutely delicious & healthy. My favorite menu item was the protein bowl. I ate here 3 times during my weekend trip to Chapel Hill. The people who work there are friendly. It's a popular spot. Each time I visited it was busy with college students.
Best açaí bowls and healthy food in the area! These bowls are 10x better than the other processed sugary options locally. Coffee is also super good. The new location is amazing and service is always wonderful!
Modern, welcoming, good service, yummy food. Enjoyed the ugly green bowl, a good variation on the theme. Also very good the more traditional acai berries bowls The avocado toast are delicious, despite the luck luster presentation.
What a great find!!! Parking is tight but we managed to squeeze in with our Ford Ranger. Ordered a snack size Dragon Bowl for an afternoon snack and it hit the spot on this 80 degree day. Refreshing, not too sweet, crunchy and full of good fruit. The store has an outdoor patio area. Inside is clean and we were able to sit and receive our food almost immediately. Highly recommend and I’ll definitely come here again to try more from the menu! 💖
Purple bowl is known for their açaí smoothie base, but their Blue Majik smoothie base is underrated. Highly recommend the Baddour Bowl and always get Nutella in your smoothie bowl. The avocado toast was simple but delicious. I would only recommend the toast as a side since it is not very filling.
Purple Bowl is one of my favorite restaurants in the Triangle. Not only is the food fresh and delicious, but the staff are always kind and attentive, and the new location is beautiful! If you’re looking for delicious healthy food, look no further than Purple Bowl. The bowls are the best that I’ve had, and I tried one of the salads for the first time today and loved it. I also love that they are a locally owned family business! They have dedicated free parking in the back for guests, which is an added bonus in the town of Chapel Hill. Highly recommend Purple Bowl!
Just got back from my first visit to California, where Açaí bowl places are ubiquitous. This one is easily the best in the area. It is as good as the best ones in CA (a small chain called Ubatuba if you’re curious). Specifically, the Purple Bowl gets the “classic” açaí base correct and also doesn’t make the bowls too sweet. The fruit is amazingly high quality also. If you’re not sure what to order, I’d start with the build your own bowl: classic base, strawberries and one other fruit, no honey, and chocolate chips and two other toppings. If you get the classic, strawberries, and chocolate, you won’t go wrong. I was going to post a photo of my bowl today but I ate it too quickly, and you don’t want to see a photo of an empty bowl. I’ll be back in a few days to update with a good photo. Great place to hang out or study. The parking lot is around the corner.
Awesome. Always consistent and delicious. Wonderful staff who are always friendly and helpful. Very clean everything and amazing fresh food that is always worth the trip. Exactly the same way it's always been plus new tasty additions to get excited about. Coffee and teas are delicious. Cannot wait to fly back again and again. Best of luck 🍀 and many more years.
Their new space is lovely! I love and appreciate their support of the students, their açaí base is so lovely and not sickly sweet, and their toppings are high quality. Cocoa nibs are one of my favorite toppings for their bowls :)
My daughter and I love these delicious fresh fruit bowls! Nice and laid back atmosphere while enjoying our fruit bowl! 🍓🥝🍫🥥🍯😋 Highly recommend if you’re looking for something other than ice cream and that’s healthier for you. We are addicted!
WOW what an amazing team you have there! I ordered thru Doordash and the driver picked up the wrong order not only did Julianna call me from the store and apologize but she also let me know that Grace bring me my correct order all of which they did not need to do (since it wasn't their error). We all need a pat on the back every once an awhile so Julianna and Grace thank you thank you :)
I absolutely love Purple Bowl! The space, especially The Patio, has become my favorite chill spot in Chapel Hill. The atmosphere is clean, bright, and focused entirely on community wellness. The vanilla almond protein bowl is my favorite, and the friendly staff really makes me feel welcome. It’s exactly the kind of safe and healthy hub the Chapel Hill community needs. Highly recommend checking it out and coming to the recently re-instated trivia nights on Tuesdays!
I love Purple Bowl!!! One of my favorite local businesses. Their acai base is simply better than everyone’s else’s. No competition
This restaurant boasts, "The best burger..." We agree. The burger and fries were delicious. We will eat there again. I'll take a picture next time.
Believe the hype! Hands-down best burger in the triangle. Amazing fries and tots as well. Super friendly staff and owner as well. You can’t go wrong!
Everything about Al's Burger Shack is top notch! If you want to enjoy excellent burgers in Chapel Hill / Carrboro with friendly service and a relaxed and fun atmosphere head to Al's on Franklin. There is also a location in Southern Village, but I've never gone there, so I can't comment on that.
We stopped by for a birthday lunch this week and had a great meal. The burgers are real meat (rare find these days it seems) and cooked perfectly. The tots are the way to go, and the milkshakes are a must. Well definitely be back!
Top burger in NC. Quality, well-sized burger. Fries and various sauces are also thoroughly enjoyed. I highly recommend the Kenny J since it has a unique Cheerwine BBQ sauce. They just opened a bar next door with TVs
This place is a local institution for a reason. Delicious, simple burgers cooked to perfection, enjoyed on a patio overlooking the hustle and bustle of Franklin St. As a vegetarian married to someone who's gluten free, it's rare we both like the same burger place. Yet, you can find us here at least once a month, splitting fries with garlic aioli, and enjoying a burger as the world passes by.
The classic burger was great. The ingredients tasted very fresh and the meat was well seasoned and cooked. The sauce on the burger was great and the fries are okay but they have a nice seasoning on them. The service was very fast and the customer service was very nice and done with a smile.
Amazing - took our family there on Saturday night and it was truly 5 stars. Simple, outdoor seating overlooking Franklin Street, affordably priced and probably the best tasting cheeseburger I’ve ever had. Staff was pleasant and helpful. There are speciality burgers that I’ll try next time. A must-visit spot for burger lovers!
I’m stuck in the hospital and they won’t let me downstairs. I gambled a $50 DoorDash order to see if they would bring it to the 4th at Duke for a $60 tip. I had to briefly talk the security guard into letting it go down, but my man came through. This is the single finest cheeseburger I’ve ever had. Thank you Al!! And thank you Darion for getting the damn thing done.
I love this restaurant’s atmosphere and food!!! From walking in and being greeted by the friendly staff to watching how much they put into hand crafting each burger. You can tell they really love and care about their quality customer experience. The chili cheese burger is excellent and the crinkle fries had the perfect texture and bite. Portions are generous so you can be sure to get full or share sides with your friends. The relaxed beach vibe is accompanied by a tin roof bar to catch a beer with a friend. I look forward to seeing other locations open around the triangle!!!
Overall Thoughts: This is a great burger spot restaurant. They do have sit down tables, but those are outside, so be aware. The staff is super friendly and VERY efficient. I’d give this place a 4.9 out of 5. 1. Restaurant Type: Burger 2. Coke Or Pepsi: Coke 3. Ketchup Type: Heinz 4. Price/Value: Great 5. Atmosphere: Laid Back(family friendly) 6. Food Quality: Great Quality 7. Service: Very Friendly Staff (some of the best I’ve had) 8. Parking: a little bit of a challenge with street parking 9. Must Haves: Any burger will do! The burgers are really big so bring your work boots if you want to take on the double A little about the people! My wife ordered her burger Medium (as did I). Her’s was more medium rare than medium. She ate about half before I made her let me take it back. It was hot outside so she decided she was done. They were going to replace the burger but I declined. The manager chased after us and said he refunded the entire order! He didn’t have to do that…but that attention to customer service will definitely make me come back! It’s the little things that matter!
I love a good burger. This was way better than good. The Mookie Burger was 10/10 and the tots were amazing. I'm usually not a fan of crinkle cut fries, but, these are different... would definitely order again. They have a nice selection of dipping sauces too. We tried the Garlic Aoli and the Spicy Ranch, both were fantastic. Super friendly staff, great atmosphere, and superior food made this a great experience. We will be back!
JUST WOW... it was like there was a party in my mouth and everyone I ever loved was invited. I'd never been here, but several people have sung Al's praise, and now I taste why. I got a Mookie and my Mom had a Classic. The Mookie was the second best burger I've had in my life only behind the Barry Burger with crispy onion strings added to it from AJ Bombers in Milwaukee. Only reason I say #2 is because I was recently in Chicago, I Drove 100+ miles North just for a burger one afternoon because I was craving the Barry and I hadn't had it in over 10 years since I lived in Milwaukee... It hadn't changed and it literally made me cry it was so good... Nostalgia for the extra point... Burgers are cooked to order and I can't remember the last time I ordered a burger medium rare, that it came out medium rare, so that was an added bonus too because it was exactly the way I cook my own burgers... Just better. Thank you to everyone at Al's, everyone seemed friendly, and everyone always on their A game!

Delicious. Easy pickup of online order. If you don't order ahead, the line/wait can be long.

Best burger I have ever had! Fresh, fries were flavorful. Their prices are very reasonable. Small place, but very clean.

Lived up to its reputation! We shared a Mookie and a Kenny J with a small side of fries. Fantastic! Normal sized burgers that you can actually eat and absolutely delicious.
Not terribly expensive when it comes to açai bowls, their baked goods are really good. The food is delicious and fresh, the only complaint being most of their açai bases come with hemp milk and if you don't like it you can't sub it out bc they're pre-made.
The acai bowls are very good, and the place has a nice vibe and convenient location. The avocado toast was delicious as well. You can find parking nearby (near the bike shop). The workers are also so nice! But I think the prices are a bit steep for what you're getting. The toast was more bare than I expected. And the bowl sizes should increase or the bowls should come with more toppings to make the bowl prices justified. But despite the price, this is an excellent place to get an acai bowl. I will definitely come again when I want an acai bowl!
I walked here for lunch when I had a break for work, and enjoyed the good sized acai bowl. I sat outside on the patio, and the wait staff had no problem bringing my food quickly. I love that you can get a healthy lunch and/or a cup of coffee. Really cool concept. It’s nice and big inside, with primarily communal sitting. Nice and bright and modern. I love the fact that there is no sugar in the bowls, and the price was reasonable enough that I will visit again.
We had a good experience at Al’s. The burger is served the way a burger should be served. I got the classic. Mine was a touch overcooked. I said medium and got something closer to ‘well’. However, the quality of the meat was enough to overcome that issue. The tots and sweet potato fries were both decent. There were plenty of people working behind the counter but I may argue that overall service was on the slower side. I got a shake right away but it took at least another 20 minutes for the food to appear. Maybe that’s the cook to order delay, who knows. Overall, a very solid burger, fun atmosphere, and friendly place that I would recommend. Also, it’s a fair value which these days is getting harder and harder to find in these here parts.
A hometown classic! The service was awesome and the food was delicious! Service was prompt and the staff was friendly! I’m not sure about handicap accessibility. The restaurant is small but there is an outside patio with a nice amount of seating. Parking is limited but it’s on the bus line. Kid friendly and family approved. Also good for a lunch date or meet up with friends!
I had a burger with a gf bun. It was pretty good. I didn't get the fries or anything since I was just doing a quick meal. The food came out very fast even though it was busy

Good indoor outdoor split. 3.5 star place, ranked 3 because of high average. Picture of avo toast says a lot… bread thin and crisp, avos more pretty than functional. Small portions for $9. Smoothie bowls are pretty good. Industrial interior. Free wifi and outlets. Have good bakery options & pressed juices.

There isn't many options to bowls itself, the bowl melts in minutes, barely get any fruit and barely any nuttela if not any in my bowl. The bowl turned into a smoothie not even 5 minutes after. I would not recommend if you want a good quality bowl and to be full because here its just for the looks and not for satisfaction. I recommend going to playa bowl instead. Incredibly disappointed.
