We had a great graduation lunch here before the ceremony. The whole fish was excellent and had a great seasoning. Everyone loved their beef course as well. Service was fantastic also. We enjoyed the June bug drink , similar to a Pimm’s Cup.
Actually really love this spot. Upscale Asian fusion food. Unique items on the menu. Steak, dumplings, catfish, salmon bento box & poached pear mousse were my highlights. Candle lit ambient environment. Really nice outdoor seating in the summer. Warning: many things have cilantro. Perfect for a celebratory dinner.
Delicious! The BBQ'D COUNTRY PORK RIB was the best pork I’ve had … maybe ever. Such a delicious sauce!!!! Service was EXTREMELY attentive - with multiple people making sure we had placed our orders/our water was full/etc. The Hot Chocolate Cake was divine. As someone who recently moved from ATL - this restaurant exceeded my expectations and made me excited to try more restaurants around Chapel Hill. It certainly wasn’t cheap - perhaps bordering on being over priced but who am I to dictate their menu!! The food doesn’t disappoint.
If you’re looking for fine dining in Chapel Hill the answer is Lantern. We were simply blown away by the quality, presentation, atmosphere, and service. Our server Sophia was very attentive and knowledgeable, and the back patio was the perfect ambience for our dinner date. Stars of the show were the spicy cucumber soup, pork & chive dumplings, and the mint chocolate ice cream 😍😍😍 (best mint chip ice cream I’ve had in my life) HIGHLY recommend!!!
Loved this place. The atmosphere is classy, warm and homey. The ladies who served us were well dressed, especially the one in training. The food was unique. I loved the crispy shrimp , the dumplings, the steak. I would have loved my salmon little bit more cooked but that's my fault. Loved the crispy green spices, never had them fried like that. The bill was hefty but it was so worth it. Loved the drink. The ginger was very present!
Lantern is a delicious Asian fusion food in downtown Chapel Hill. Everything was well-balanced in flavors and exquisitely presented. Two small plates and a large one were adequate for my partner and me, leaving us room for desserts. I would love to visit again!
My boyfriend and I had a lovely Valentine's Day date at Lantern. The service was great and food was delicious. Would recommend to a friend and definitely come back another time!
Truly a wonderful restaurant whether we want a sit down dinner or a evening at the bar with friends. Menu has an Asian flair with a seafood, chicken, pork or beef options as well as vegetarian options. I especially love the dumplings Great selection of wines by the glass or their specialty cocktails.
Been here twice for work. It is small place. You can't bring a big group unless you call ahead. This is very intimate so you better like your co-workers or your date! The food & service hands down are the 5. I will def come back if my work travels brings me here again.
Updating this post since they have gone back to full service: you MUST visit this restaurant! One of our absolute favorites in Chapel Hill. We have since moved to NYC and it could hold its own there 100 percent. We miss it. The first time I came to Lantern in August 2019 I was absolutely blown away. I was excited to take my husband so once they opened post-COVID we were eager to book a spot in their outdoor patio. They have a new system where you order entirely on your phone (although a waiter does come check on you and bus the table). The food was still good but I felt like it wasn't up to my last experience. The pea shoot scallion dumplings were my favorite of the night, in large part to their miso sesame dipping sauce. We also got the fried okra but it tasted kind of cold when it arrived. The fried cauliflower was not particularly stand out. The crispy catfish I expected to be more flavorful but it was bland (I got a whole fish the first time which was bursting with flavor). The real winner of the night was the Peach Melba dessert - that was a 5 star and not even usually big on dessert. I still love Lantern from my original experience so maybe it was an off night - hoping things turn around and recognize the hardship they've been through! Pic - Junebug cocktail (similar to Pimm's cup, and appetizers).
I don't give out a 5 star rating lightly. We went here for dinner on a Thursday evening and everything was perfect. The service was friendly and attentive, and the food was amazing. We started with the summer rolls, which were delicious. They came with a very good sauce. I had the crispy catfish, which was flavorful and delicious. For dessert we shared the chocolate cake with coffee ice cream... And I wished I had it all to myself. The chocolate cake was a bit like a souffle, with a soft gooey inside. It is a little pricy but worth it.
I came here for an afternoon of "working from home", it was a lovely experience. I ordered a coconut latte, and a Lambwich. The lamb was tender, and the spices/sauce used tied all of the ingredients together. The latte was also delicious. The atmosphere was also great, as it had outlets, wifi and plenty of outdoor seating, and a comfortable inside space. It was my first time here but will be back!
This place felt like a hidden gem! The food was AMAZING and the atmosphere was lovely. The service wasn’t the best but it seemed like only one person was handle the shop which made the service very understandable. Out food came out quickly and hot. I left with left overs and a good time. will definitely go again to study or just eat.
This place kinda caught us by surprise. Food was great and service was excellent. We got the chicken Maharaja and Lambwich. Both sandwich meats were cooked and seasoned perfectly. We visited on a crisp fall afternoon and the outdoor seating was such a joy, will definitely be back again.
Excellent dining experience featuring crispy, flavorful fries with a savory homemade seasoning; a delicious pesto chicken panini; grilled chicken salad bowl with two types of tasty homemade "gourmaise" on the side; and a chocolate frappe for dessert. The owner was also our cook and server, and he was delightful to chat with during our meal. This is also a good place off Franklin St to stop and work or enjoy a meal with a friend or partner. It's a hole in the wall location but with great lasting potential. I want to spread the word about Saturni to more people to ensure the business gets the attention and customer traffic it deserves!
A one-of-kind hidden gem in the chapel hill area which is extremely hard to find! I ordered the lambwich with fries and I couldn’t even finish my plate from how filling and delicious it was! The fries were crisp yet fluffy inside with a light homemade savory seasoning! I can’t stop raving about the sandwich either to my friends! The meat was prepared and cooked on the spot which allowed for an extremely fresh taste. I can’t wait to come back to try something else! If you’re in the area, come here to experience a quality meal like no other on Franklin street! Thank you Saturni!
Cute place with nice outdoor seating. There isn’t much indoor seating since the area is cozy, but it’s got decent space. I got the dragonfruit lychee refresher (refreshing indeed) and sat in to do some homework for a couple of hours. their menu items are like $5, and its a good amount. Outside tables have umbrellas for shade.
I’m so happy I found this place! I saw the sign outside near the Cat Tales cafe and decided to drop in and grab coffee. The coffee here is absolutely sublime. I’m very particular about coffee and I’ve returned several times for the cold brew because it’s just that great. They also have a full menu and the food is amazing. I had a pesto chicken melt with fries and it was delicious. The food was made fresh, seasoned perfectly, and the portion size is great for the price. I’m excited to visit again to try the breakfast. I highly recommend!
First time at this new restaurant. Walking into Saturni felt “good” - unassuming but so welcoming, the food made to your preference, and the staff are warm, welcoming, and completely authentic. We had the lamb burger - so savory and delicious - just the right balance to make you want more. Orange chocolate Frappuccino- absolutely delicious!! We will be back!! Cheers! Daljit & Seema
Food was really good. It is definitely an upscale Asian restaurant. Menu is not large but full of flavor! The ambiance was great for a small group setting. Would recommend a reservation.
Fusion food with local fresh ingredients. We went there for dinner. Not too many options on menu which is not a bad thing. Ordered chaat and salt-pepper shrimp for appetizers and both were amazing. Crispy cilantro with shrimp reminded us of some authentic Indian food from back home. Chaat was different than typical Indian style chaat. Great combination of ingredients. For mains I ordered vegetable stew. Wife and kid ordered whole NC wild fish. I loved the veggie stew but fish was interesting. It was whole bass with head and bones. It’s took a little bit of work to get the flesh. Taste was decent and our least favorite item for dinner. Dessert was amazing. We had Hot chocolate cake and warm yuzu pudding. Both were delicious. Service was excellent. Took a little while to find parking. There are two paid parking lots next to the restaurant.
very nice! relaxing atmosphere. it was dead but food took a while...everyone ordered dumplings/potstickers
Good quality cooking, dubious if it’s worth the price. I had high expectations for Lantern as it is the only restaurant currently open in the Triangle area with a JB award. The pan-Asian Southern concept is also quite interesting: it allows the restaurant to get away from authenticity if it allows for better flavor. Although, I doubt if that decision really pays off for Lantern (the fried okra with tomato chutney is markedly inferior to any Indian or Southern preparation of fried okra). The rest of the dishes, however, were executed perfectly. The noodles, in particular, were a highlight: it’s as if the very essence of an oyster mushroom was distilled into the sauce. Similarly, the dumplings were cooked to a perfect toothsome level and the sesame dipping sauce accompanying them was outstanding. All that said, I’m still unsure this is worth the price - there are certainly better restaurants in the Triangle area that you don’t have to pay this much for. Worth a visit, but not more than once.
My recent dining experience at Lantern in Chapel Hill was nothing short of delightful. From the delectable cuisine to the captivating ambiance, it was an evening to remember. Let's start with the highlight of the meal - the bite-size Korean fried chicken. It was simply out of this world delicious! Each crispy morsel packed a punch of flavor that left us craving more. It's definitely a must-try dish for anyone visiting Lantern. As for the drinks, I opted for the Late Blossom, a perfect spring cocktail that blended vodka, lillet blanc, lychee, and orange blossom into a refreshing and fragrant concoction. It perfectly complemented the vibrant flavors of the meal. Speaking of which, I savored every slurp of the ramen with pork belly, bok choy, and an egg. The broth was rich and flavorful, the pork belly perfectly tender, and the addition of bok choy added a refreshing crunch. It was a bowl of comfort and indulgence. What truly elevated the experience was the ambiance of the back room where my friends and I were seated. It exuded a sense of intimacy and mystery, making it the perfect setting for romantic dates or intimate gatherings. The dim lighting added to the allure, creating a cozy atmosphere that enhanced our dining experience. Overall, Lantern offers a memorable dining experience with its exquisite cuisine, inviting ambiance, and impeccable service. While the meal was fantastic, there's always room for improvement, hence the four-star rating. Nevertheless, I highly recommend Lantern to anyone looking for a culinary adventure in Chapel Hill.
This restaurant charges 6% for what they called a kitchen fee!,… what is the reason behind this?,.. it comes in as a surprise , …. And it was late when I learned about this,..
It's a nice cozy environment in chapel Hill with outdoor seating as well. We visited during the holiday break so probably not a lot of people/students around. It was empty when we visited there only one person managing the store. We ordered 3 sandwiches with fries. Food was good but the service was very slow. It took almost 25mins to get the food. Want to give another try when they have more staff.
We stopped in for lunch date. This was good experience. The outdoor patio is so nice it's mostly under shade. The food is good I got grilled bbq chicken sandwich. The seasoning was really good. It had little heat but with the ranch dressing it blended well. The fries are must try the seasoning added great flavor. Some of the better fries I had in awhile. If you looking for lunch spot this is definitely must try. We tried refresher drink and that was very good. The price is reasonable for the portions. This is must try , great spot for lunch.
I sat at a bar table with a chair that was on the verge of collapsing. People passing by constantly elbowed me in the back. The menu was basic, and the food was bland. Overall, the experience was okay at best.
Great atmosphere, excellent service, okay food. The fish was cooked whole, which I'm definitely not used to. If it blew my mind I wouldn't have cared, but I've had much better fish that didn't involve mouthfuls of fishbones. The pork and chive dumplings were good, not great. The cocktail I got (scotch, port, egg white, some other ingredients) was EXCELLENT. The chocolate cake and peanut brittle ice cream dessert was so good we ordered a second one.
Loved the ambience and the vibe. Cocktails were great. Fried okra was a disappointment. Not a fan of their entrees too. Overall what's a restaurant with good ambience and okay ish food ?
Maybe we were there on an off or bad day. My partner had a sandwich and I had just a drink. The vibe was nothing like the reviews were saw. The bathroom was not clean, there was no soap or paper products in there and the dining room was unkept. There was a board? maybe missing from under our seating area which was attached to the wall. The drink machine was rusted, and maybe it was out of use but it should have been cleaned? Not a good experience unfortunately.
after visiting the lovely cat tales cafe around the corner, i was thirsty and wanted a drink. i walked around the corner and saw signs of “best drinks this way.” as i sat down on the stool by the entrance, i listened in on the conversation between the customer and the employee. they asked for certain items on the menu but they didn’t have the ingredients to make them. the employee said “i can make you toast with bacon…” they weren’t interested. i waited about 10 minutes for a salted caramel mocha. turns out they also didn’t have caramel so i got the vanilla instead. when the order was being prepared the employee was frantically dropping cups, running around and wiping dripping sweat from his face. once i got my order, it was incorrect. it was missing the mocha, the main ingredient in the drink... had to wait 5 minutes to get that fixed. i then waited about another 5 minutes to pay. a women there before me received her drink and didn’t get charged for it until after me. when i sat outside the cat cafe, i saw the women who were in Saturni. they took a sip from their matcha and smoothies then threw out their drinks. not even getting a quarter of the way through it. they said it was awful. i took a sip of mine and was equally disgusted and disappointed. the staff did not appear prepared, there was a chair in the middle of the kitchen in the way, and the service was not good. i will not be back and if i could give them 0 stars i would
