Good food every time. This is my favorite place to dine. You get you own drinks but that's ok. No noise even when the place is packed, I love it. Other restaurants don't have this quality. I like to enjoy my food and conversation. Maybe the food is so good, they are eating more and taking less. Talking noise isn't a problem there. People who work there are very courteous. Menu has a variety for all.
Food here was amazing. And the service was just as great, very friendly people, great atmosphere, lots of fun.
Ordered chicken fried steak and it was amazing
The food is great and the service is wonderful
I ordered the catfish and shrimp plate with okra and green beans. Everything was cooked well and arrived hot. The staff is very friendly and checked to make sure we were happy with our meals. We had a great experience.
The best chiken fried steak I have tested.
Great fried catfish and the Ribeye sandwich is the other thing I get. Can go wrong with either, both great. I would tell you about about some of the other food there but I get one of the two every time. And the staff that works and takes care of you are some of the best around. Always asking you if you need anything else and how is you food.
I love Nolan’s! They have great food and a great environment for eating. The bathrooms are clean and the dining area is always kept very clean. The employees are very respectful when interacting with patrons. I highly recommend this restaurant!
We drove over from Corpus Christi to Calallen, to meet up with my Son who was on his way to San Antonio. Lunch was awesome! The wait staff was very accommodating and very cheerful! We loved our food and visit! Very clean, very 😋.
When you are coming North on the interstate and you see the signs, read them. It is on the west side of I-69E about a mile in a strip mall. We wanted a CFS and read that this had the best. (Billboard) We ended up doing a loop on the frontage road and came back down NW Blvd to find this place. Missed it and came back to it. Lots of seats and great atmosphere. 1st reason for going... Chicken Fried Steak. Worth every penny. Great sides to choose from and the price is right. I had the double and couldn't have been any happier when I was done. The breading is the best I've had in a log time. Just wished I lived closer to be able to try some of the other items on the menu.
My favorite thing to order from Nolan’s is the Salmon Caesar salad. The salmon is grilled perfectly and it all tastes so good. I have two complaints, however. The size of the salad has been cut back so much that I’m still hungry. The size of the salmon is the same but not as much lettuce as there used to be. I almost feel cheated. That is the most inexpensive part of this dish. Why not load it up? Also when I call in to order my Salmon Caesar Salad, they always ask me what dressing I want on it…… Ummm. How about CAESAR????
If ya leave hungry its your fault. Excellent food and service. Chicken fried steak is good and if hungry they got texas size...n it's big(better be hungry) poor boys are great .... all the food is great go try it.... $$
Definitely a place to return to. Fried oysters are always perfect. Catfish is delicious. Mashed potatoes are tasty, but very small serving. Everything is always fresh. The poorboy sandwiches are fantastic. Get some to go from the fridge and bake them at home!
Good food brisket and sausage awesome 👍
A few weeks ago, we used the back room for a post-funeral dinner. Up front, they made it surprisingly easy to keep a tab till we were done. Everything was great.
I had a steak poorboy that was cooked to my preference for a good price
Excellent food for all of us which included myself (the mother) and my son and granddaughter and my sister. Staff were very friendly did not rush us for our order and answered any questions we had. The ice machine needed to be refilled but they were very busy which was understandable. They did however refill it very quickly. The place was very clean and everyone was well organized. They made everyone feel as though they were special customers. I would definitely recommend this Nolans in Calallen.
Our first time there. You order at the counter and help yourself to drinks and eating utensils. I had chicken tenders. Husband had club sandwich with fries. We also had chocolate cake and apple cobbler. Food was very good. Will go again when in the area.
Always a great meal at reasonable prices. Dining room clean and always plenty of staff on hand to meet high volume times of day, making your experience better all around. Any items they sell are made with fresh ingredients. Always a pleasure A+
This place is a minute or two off the beaten path through town, BUT, well worth the stop for a home cooked meal. The King ranch chicken was great and so was the Blackened Tilapia.
I am very pleased with this place. I will come back when in the area. I had the steak. It was a nice size and I was very impressed with the flavor and at such a low price. My wife said the chicken fried steak was very good. Very clean even the latrines were clean. Decided to try the cake. Very moist and tasty. Very down home feel to the place. The staff was nice and efficient.
Amazing Chicken Fried Steak, Homemade Croutons, desserts, etc. Too many choices. The Poorboys looked amazing. Great Service. Order from the counter, and they'll bring your order, to you. Self served drinks. One of my husband's favorite places as a kid. He was thrilled to see that it was the same family owned operation, in a different location. We went at the bottom of the lunch hour. The place was packed when we got there, and cleared out soon after. Can't wait to try something different, next time.
Our first time time here on our way to San Antonio from South Padre island. My friend and my husband were in the mood for chicken fried steak.. we saw the advertisement on the billboard. The best decision we made that day was to stop here for lunch. When we walked in there we knew... this is going to be good. Our order taker greeted us with a big smile and I told her it was our first time here. She was very helpful. Now down to the best part.. the food was to die for. The chicken fried steak as they put is was the best they have ever eaten and my B-B-Que poor boy well if I could I would drive back from San Antonio every weekend just to have it again! We were so glad we stumbled across this place and will definitely make it a regular stop whenever we pass this way again. Esther Gonzales
Best chicken fried steak I have had in a long time. It was fresh and crispy. My sister said there was no way I could eat a double but when I got to the last bite I thought she might be wrong 😂. Staff were friendly and helpful. I am ready for chicken fried steak again!
Been here numerous times and the food has always been good. The fried shrimp and oysters are so good it's hard for me to order anything else now. Pair them up with a side of fried okra and a house salad and you won't be dissappinted. The carrot cake for dessert is moist and delicious. The service received is normally friendly and pleasant. My daughters love when we order the appetizers or bread and cheese. The atmosphere is casual and comfortable. Prices aren't outrageous and affordable depending on what you order.
2nd time coming to this place and it does not disappoint. Comfort food that is quick and delicious. I ordered the chicken sandwich with cheese and bacon, a sode of fries and tea. It has been my go to combo and is perfect everytime. If you can try a up of the potato soup, i would recommend it! Will definitely be needing to come here again with my family.
Food was awesome I had the Big City Boy ( Philly Cheese steak on a hoagie bun) made to perfection!( Chef's kiss *) The peach cobbler was great. The staff were ,was (?) very friendly and personable, made us feel right at home. The atmosphere welcoming warm and homey. Overall a great place . If you haven't been there yet get there as soon as you can.💯☺️👍
Very clean and neat place. The employees were fantastic, friendly, and fun! The cooks were singing Christmas jingles while they were working which was nice to see. The carrot cake was AMAZING. I ordered the chicken fried steak, fried okra, and mashed potatoes. All delicious! 10/10 recommend!
This place is amazing. We had a variety, including the shrimp and steak. Everything was delicious and cooked perfectly. The service is excellent and employees are super friendly. The place is also very clean. We will definitely be going back.
Great food, great service, great prices. Can't ask for more.
Been seeing the billboard advertising Nolans for a while, decided to check it out. Kicking myself for waiting so long. The chicken fried steak was awesome. Nevet been a big fan of white gravy....Noland knocked it out of the park. Best white gravy I have every had. The mashed potatoes were spot on. The coconut cake was heavenly. Nolans is now on our must stop for lunch when we are in the area. Will bring friends next time.
We had the red fish platter and the chicken fried steak. And a cold glass of ice tea. The food was awesome. My wife enjoyed the carrot cake as well.
Always good food. Chicken fried steak is a favorite but everything is delicious. Service is friendly and quick. Clean place. Family oriented. Groups could meet here. Great for “after the game” gatherings
The food is absolutely delicious and the service is excellent. We frequently dine here when we are in town and have never been disappointed.
We enjoyed this hometown-styled American restaurant. My son declared that the gravy was the best he ever had. Excellent chicken fried steak!
Nolan has always been an exceptional gentleman, and the service is outstanding, but the food is even more amazing. Family oriented cuisine.
Food made with Pride, and dang good to boot! Staff is excellent and extremely friendly. The ordering is at the counter, then have a seat. Which is nice, just eat and leave, no waiting on busy staff to get and pay the bill. Prices are very fair and the portions are enough to fill anyone up. I can't recommend this restaurant enough!!! Do your belly a favor and go give them a try!!!
Food was nice and hot, not much of a wait, only issue I had was it was too cold in the dinning area. So if you're going to visit make sure you take a jacket. Other than that it's a great place to eat a meal.
10/14/25 Update: still constant food and services. 10/24 Update: We visited this place whenever we get a chance. Still great food and service. Great place to grab a chopped sirloin steak with onions and gravy! Moist patty cooked to my order. I had a baked potato and broccoli for my sides. The baked potato was good, not over cooked and the steamed broccoli with a touch of butter, not over cooked, still had color! We had croutons and cheese, a few pieces tasted a little salty but overall a simple appetizer. For dessert, we had a slice of lemon cake, very moist. We have eaten at this location several times throughout the years, as far as the chopped sirloin steak plate; it has been made consistent in taste and quality! Great service too!
Clean, simple, variety of comfort foods, affordable, friendly staff. We loved the chicken fried steak & hamburger steak!
First of all, we saw a bill board. Found the restaurant, don't sit down, the menu is on the wall and you order at the cashier desk. At first, I'm thinking this s a fast food place, wasn't happy. However, we ordered a hamburger steak that had onions and jalapenos is the middle and brown gravy which was one of the best I haver EVER eaten! With fried okra and fresh fries. I was surprisingly delighted!
Food here is always amazing. We come once a month and I usually get the same thing because I know it's consistently tasty. The few times I tried other items I was pleased as well. This place doesn't disappoint.
This is one of those few places that take you back in time to those delicious home cooked country meals! We are new to the area and had heard about this restaurant so decided to give it a try. As we pulled up you can see that it's an older location. We walked in and we place our order at the register. Their menu has several options with a kids menu as well. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Facility was very clean and open with comfortable seating. I tried their award winning chicken fried steak with okra and corn. My husband tried their ribeye sandwich, while our kids had fried shrimp. Their portions were a very good size and the food was delicious! Definitely will return to try more delicious items on their menu!
Nolan’s is a great, reliable, come when we can type of place. Everything I’ve ordered is good and they are willing to accommodate. My favorite things to order are the cheeseburger steak and the cattlemans sandwich. The cheeseburger steak is a ground beef steakette with cheese and jalapeños inside and the cattlemans is a ribeye sandwich. Don’t forget to add an order of the crotons with cheese! The restaurant also has a reservable party area for all your small party needs.
The atmosphere is very casual, everyone is very friendly. We had not ever been there so we were kind of lost however we managed. You don't have to order steaks we had ribeye steak sandwiches and they were delicious! Highly recommended! We will defiantly return.
Very good food and friendly staff. The chicken fried steak is actually really good. The ribeye was too thin and had too much gristle. But, it was still tasty. I am sure steaks are hard to buy and try and ensure they are perfect.
I enjoyed my dinner. It was a chicken fried steak. It was a little too salty for my taste but good any way. They have some croutons that you spread cheddar on that were pretty good. Everyone seemed to enjoy their meal, wide variety of food.
Chicken fried steak was good but they are real stingy with their pinto beans and pinto beans are cheap to make so I don't know why they give you just a little cup pull anyway other than that I rate it maybe a three and a half or four is what now entertain for $4 of glass is beginning to be a little ridiculous
The steak and shrimp was good as always, but the poor boy that my son had wasn't. Too much of the cheddar cheese made the sandwich too strong of a taste. But overall good.
Good experience overall for quick service surf and turf. Solid mom and pop feel.
Had the brisket and sausage plate the brisket was good. They could have given me a little bit more beans instead of the 2.5 ounce cup
We have eaten at Nolan's multiple times over the past several years while visiting family. This place is a staple for us because of the quality, variety, and price of the food. The salads are fresh with homemade dressing. The meals are perfectly prepared to taste. The only reason for a four star is that I give out five star reviews only for exceptional, exceptional places.
Good experience overall. Some of our food was a little bland, but I really enjoyed the catfish sandwich. Also, the chocolate cake was delicious! I almost gave 5 stars for that alone.
Love the chopped sirloin and chicken fried steak. Great every time.
The bread is top notch! It's one of the best items on the menu and it comes free! Tons of variety and it's all very good. The experience is unique because you order first find your own seat then grab your drink yourself, this allows free unlimited refills. They do bring the food to you when it's done though. All in all it's a great experience and food is quite delicious as well.
Great brisket. No matter what time of day it is. Catfish is so delicious and VERY fresh. Prices are set right. Service is courteous, considerate, consistent and caring. Very clean restaurant. Bus staff is quick to get all things cleaned to at a very timely manner. Atmosphere is well set to calm.
We were not prepared for the set up for ordering. The Google site did not mention that it was a counter order type of restaurant. It was also very loud. The mashed potatoes were cold, watery and tasted like instant. Very disappointed about that since the other food we ordered was of a much higher caliber. The fried catfish was excellent, as was the chopped steak. We will probably eat here again.
A very good family dining restaurant. They have a wide variety of menu items. Their sandwiches are great. It can get crowded but it's easy to get in. Order at the counter and they bring your food to the table. I had the brisket sandwich, which was delicious. Sharon enjoyed her shrimp poboy. If you're looking for good food at a very reasonable price in Calallen check Nolan's out.
BBQ was plain and non picturesque. Potato salad good. French fries decent. Chicken fried steak was not bad but not the best as advertised which is what lured us in. Probably not a return visit as it was pricey for the quality we received. Tea and sonic type ice was good.
Some of the BEST brisket I've ever had BUT, the portions of everything else (other than the Poorboys) on the menu was unbelievably small. And pricey.. $15 for sausage, 2 slices of brisket, a condiment size cup of beans and an icecream scoop of potato salad. I should of took a picture, it was hard to believe. If it wasn't for that.. I would of gave it 5 stars
Over priced menu the greed of restaurants blaming it on triffs. Nonsense
I had the combo plate with oysters and shrimp. They were pretty good. For my sides I had fried okra, which wasn't done and fries which were your normal fries. Everything was okay except the okra but I felt like I overpaid for what I got especially since you pay at the counter, seat yourself serve yourself drinks and refills etc.
I had the grilled Chicken salad. The presentation was good. But when I took a bite of the chicken, the chicken was tough, as if it was reheated. Two of my sisters also ordered the same plate and the chicken was tough as well. We have been going to Nolans for years and this had not happened before. Thank you. For today I give it a 3
I will say the food was very good. Friendly staff and clean restaurant. I give only 3 stars for the price. I wanted catfish and saw they had it. It was late, and I didn't have time to look elsewhere. I will definitely not order the 2 piece catfish for $20 again. Since then, I found a place in Corpus for $19 that gives 4 filets, 4 jumbo shrimp, 4 oysters, coleslaw, beans, and 4 hushpuppies Sorry, but more bang for my buck elsewhere....I will drive for good food and good value.
While nothing was bad, nothing was Cajun Shrimp poboy was shrimp from Walmart or Sam’s club not seasoned flour breading just more pako breading then shrimp. No real Cajun offerings like red beans and rice or crawfish étouffée. Everyone was extremely nice but this is more of a pop up sandwhich shop than a Nola thing. Place was busy and food still came quick service was extremely good
Good food. Decent service (kinda fast food style ordering). The portions have gotten smaller and prices have gone up. The customers have noticed and are talking. It will be sad to see this place go the way of the dinosaurs. Support Mom and Pops local restaurants.
Well service after meal is delivered is non existent. “Crab” Stuffed jalapeños are provided by “sisco foods” probably, have generic restaurant taste. Not spicy at all, no distinct flavors. Also no trace of crab present. Chicken fried steak was very small step above Cracker Barrel in taste and appearance. Breading was a lot thicker than I want or suggest. All food was still edible but will not put on list of “let’s go eat ….”
Good home style cooking, the homemade desserts are very tasty. I had the double chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes and fried okra, it was decent. My lovely dinner date had the poboy, 🤷is my reaction, she had it with brisket and smoked sausage, fries and okra.....meh.......bland just by looking at it, I didn't want to taste it, I passed, Texas rule, if you don't see the smoke, smell the smoke and see the wood.......it ain't true barbecue, nuff said.
Very Bad first impression. Food came out and no appetizer. When tried to cancel, Guy said "will we can put a note and you can get them next visit". Tea was nasty. Brisket was rubbery. Shrimp salad, shrimp poor boy, and sides were good. But overall, I wouldn't recommend this place to others.
Pros: friendly staff. Cons: Food is not good. Beans and potato salad bland. Nolan’s famous poor boy was generic sandwich meat with low quality cheese (almost seemed like nacho cheese). Could have made a superior meal at home for a fraction of the price.
Bought food curbside Calallen location last two months, Feb and March once each. Feb I had brisket and sausage poorboy. Meat good, bun was dried out like sat on counter couple days. Potato salad was mashed mush, no chuncks. March had Chicken fried chicken dinner, was alittle greasey but tasted ok. Not really impressed over all. April went to Southside location by Staples st. Dine in. This was the nail in coffin for me. Decided to stay away from poorboys, had brisket plate. Requested lean brisket, fries, beans, and warm dinner roll. Meat was fatty and rubbery, rest of food was great. Very disappointing, not giving this restaurant anymore tries. Staff was very nice, food quality just not there in Meat. My daughter had original poorboy, buttered and heated in oven. Looked terrific and she liked it. Wish they would've heated and butter the poorboy with brisket and sausage I had ordered months ago. Done
By far the most rubbery shrimp I've ever had. The locals to the area said that this was the best around. I didn't find that to be true. Only good thing I had was the carrot cake. Steak and shrimp I had was just barley eatable. If I wasn't so hungry at the moment I was there, I probably would have went somewhere else.
People were nice and friendly. Shrimp “poor boy” was not good. Absolutely not Nola style. Cheap bread, cheap tasteless shrimp, poor batter, and veggies were not good at all. Pretty expensive too at $13 without a drink. Looked and saw a good rating. Should have looked closer at all reviews as I’m not the first to have issues lately.
I ordered the poorboy bbq sandwich and I could not get myself to eat more than half my plate. The quality of meat and sausage was very poor. The brisket was so thinly sliced and mostly fatty. I remember eating at Nolan’s years ago and the quality has definitely declined.
Food was disgusting. Staff was rude. Prices were outrageous for the quality of food served. Very disappointed! Will never go here again.
I understand the issues with economy across the world but to raise the prices while lowering the quality and quantity of the food is not justified. How can you serve a BBQ item without pickles and onions? The baked potato"meal" is not at all in keeping with the cost of the meal. If I had known that the cashiers were having a bad day, I probably would have gone elsewhere...I did not mean to interrupt your day by ordering a meal at your establishment. Bad food, rude service, terrible quantities, and high prices do not make for a great establishment. Not likely to return.
I'm not sure if this place has recently changed management or owners or something, but I was really expecting a really good chicken fried steak from reading the comments. Boy, was I DISAPPOINTED. Too much crust..not enough meat. The meat I did eventually find was very chewy. Flavor was blah...sides were blah. Gravy was, you guessed it, blah. Yeah, this isn't a good representation of a true Texas chicken fried steak. Thumbs down!👎🏽👎🏽
10 March 2020. I ordered a bacon Cheeseburger which was incredibly dry and bacon so hard (beyond "crispy") you couldn't bite through it, pinto beans were tasteless and barely warm. I returned almost the entire plate uneaten (the Ketchup was pretty good so I ate some of my fries). Remarked to bus person about the meal but got no response at all and he did not say anything when he went back behind the counter. When we remarked on the poor quality at the counter, the manager(?) told us to order something different next time (really?!!!!!). I guess it will be another 8 months before I go back - a disappointment every time. $31 into the garbage and a staff that doesn't care. I hope I remember how bad it is longer this time. p.s this site will not allow me to give it less than 1 star.
Fried fish was raw and cold. I asked for my crispy fried okra and it wasn't crispy. I sent it back and they just refried the same okra because it was so greasy I couldn't eat it. The cold green beans looked like they were from the day before
Food terrible, but service pretty good and atmosphere pretty clean. Chicken fried steak was way too tough, they went ahead and exchanged for chicken fried chicken but it had zero flavor :( we waited all day to eat because we heard good things, but the food missed the mark. Staff overall very nice! There was only one young girl that wasn't friendly.
Sad to say that today is my last day coming here. We noticed in the past few years a decline in quality. Today's deciding factor was we ordered and the food was ready in less then 10 minutes. When we got our chicken fried steak it was unevenly heated through. Like they microwaved it. Here is why I say that, the sirloin chopped steak was warm and dry not medium rare. The mashed potatoes which was not what we ordered was warm on the outside and cold in the middle. So it really does seem like they are precooking food and please don't get me started on my Prime rib poorboy. That was an entirely different kind of disappointment.
I have loved eating at Nolan's since moving back to the area a few years ago. The people are always friendly as there were last night. But last night's meal at the Calallen location was far from appetizing. It wasn't busy and yet the po'boy was cold. The worst was the potato salad which was lumpy instead of creamy. And it didn't seem to have much taste to it. As if they were skimping on the added ingredients. This is not the first time the potato salad was like this. I would have complained but I ate the fries instead which they had mistakenly given me. Surprisingly they were good. Something else this location should monitor is the drink station. It had caked-on smudges all over it. Looked like it hadn't been cleaned in a while.
Pictures of the plate are to show some of the oils that was served with the shrimp. First time ever, will never come back or recommend, in fact I want to forget I ever came here. This was the worst place to get seafood. Also the most unfriendliest place to go if it's your first time. They expect you to know what to do the second you arrive. Horrible if it's your first time as they are not friendly enough to let you know "their" specific way. As soon as it was obvious that we were not regular customers the young girl who took our orders quickly shifted from mediocre ok mannered to rude that we did not know how her little world work area is supposed to work. Then we got the food and the fried shrimp was dripping with fried oils into the plate when we got it and dumped it with a napkin to see show how much fried oil was in it.. it was the absolute worse place ever. If you haven't been to it... Keep it that way!.. that's your warning you will NOT enjoy it.
The famous poor boy was a thin slice of meat and a hard crunchy bread roll. This is hardly a "poorboy". Worst poorboy I have ever had. The fries over fried and cold. The shrimp tasted like old grease. Nolan Culp back at his restaurant use to be had great food. He would be ashamed of this quality of food.
The wife got the fish and it was awful don’t know what happened but it was awful. I had the brisket sandwich and I really don’t think it was brisket I’ve been eating brisket for 60 years at least and that was nasty, don’t believe we’ll be going back.
