I really liked this place. It is so yummy. The rolls are perfect. Not too large but lots of flavor. The assorted tempura was so crispy and delicious. A good portion too. Popcorn shrimp roll was so crisp and flavorful. The spicy yellowtail roll was great too. I definitely will return.
Had a really nice intimate experience here at Ango Tei. We had the omakase and it was quite an experience! The last dish was a very creative truffle salmon belly. I didn't think you could make salmon belly more delicious than it already is. The restaurant is a bit bright, but the quality matched the price and it was such a great time!
Great sushi! You get two pieces of nigiri per order and the quality and portion were all great. The staffs and chefs are nice. Not a huge venue and may fill up quickly. I'd recommend sitting at the bar instead of at the table.
My parents took me here. They love actual raw sushi🍣. I’m more of a roll 🍱eater but I tried some of the plain raw legit sushi and it was very fishy🐠🐟. Which I’m guessing is how it’s supposed to be. And my parents think very highly of this place so I’m going to take their word and say this is 5! If I liked raw fish, I would prob like it too. But it wasn’t bad. I really like their baked dishes. Man that was heavenly.
This local spot is by far some of the best sushi I’ve ever had. Belly up to the counter and let the chefs guide you through amazing sushi experience. Plus they are entertaining! And get the yuzu sauce on white fish. Thank me later!
Authentic straight from Japan sushi place. No frills, no crazy rolls. Just the basic rolls done well and incredibly fresh. Even the sushi rice is the best I've ever had. I highly recommend the rainbow roll. Two old Japanese guys make the sushi. All of the staff and customers are Japanese. We were the only white people in there but we felt very welcome.
Incredible quality of fish. This place is a hidden gem. I wouldn't have found this without a friend's recommendation. Their halibut nigiri was so good that I had to order another serving.
Great services!!! The sushi chef, Johan is very friendly. I would totally come here again.
Great sushi, nice and friendly staff, one of my favorite places to eat in Costa Masa
Decent place. The menu they gave seemed somewhat limited. Of what we had, the tuna tatake was the best.
Today 9-8-2025 Ango Tei looks permanently closed. No tables inside... & locked up
My son and I were visiting Southern California and happened to find this place. Absolutely delicious, full of regulars, the service was amazing and the sushi chef particularly nice. Thank you!
Always, doesn't fail me! Food is fresh and simple.
The food was amazing and fast to order. The special menu was on point with really good Salmon belly.
I've loved this little hole in the wall since I discovered it in college in 1987. I now live in San Diego, and use any excuse possible to have lunch there whenever I'm within 20 miles. Fresh, quality ingredients are the key. Great Crunchy Roll, Softshell Crab Roll, and Sebass Egg Roll. Even boring standards like Miso Soup and California Rolls are really good at Angotei.
If you are looking for traditional Japanese sushi and dishes, this is your place. There is not a heavy focus on all those rolls that everyone thinks is sushi but really is not. The staff is all Japanese and things are made with Japanese tradition, structure, and discipline. They frequently have things that a lot of places do not. Bluefin Toro, Fresh Octopus from Japan (not cooked), Real Giant Clam from Japan just to name a few. The have some really good authentic beers as well. Currently most of the Japanese beer you see is from Canada (Asahi, Sapporo, etc). They have Orion from Okinawa and the super premium Echigo (made from sake water) from Japan. Wait staff is very attentive. Its a small restaurant and you will most likely engage with some other diner at the sushi bar because people are really friendly that come here
I was traveling on business and stopped in at Ango Tei. The Mix Tataki and ponzu sauce dish was excellent! Hope Can't wait to make it back and try them again!
Really great sushi; so fresh! Atmosphere was fantastic. Great service at the bar!
The best sushi bar, the chef are great and so kind Fish are so fresh, it's one ofcthe best sushi i ever had
beautiful people making beautiful food :) this place has been serving only quality for the past 10 years since I’ve been coming here ~ thank you, ango tei, for the thoughtful staff and delectable bites!
I love Ango Tei a lot! I've been going here for over 30 years. When I first went, I was a college student, but as time went by, I went with my daughter, now a college student, and she loved it too. Unfortunately, the original chefs are no longer there (most of them are retired) 🥲but it's still delicious.😍However, some types of sushi are no longer available.
My husband was Japanese and he always said this is the best sushi and sashimi he'd ever having his life. Sherry and her staff will take amazing care of you. The freshest fish and dishes I've ever had. This is a regular stop for me.
This is my favorite spot for fresh sushi. Great chefs. Friendly staff. Intimate atmosphere. Fish is always fresh / from market that morning. Never had a bad item. Lots of unique / traditional Japanese (I imagine?) menu items worth trying that you won’t find anywhere else.
I love sushi but more and more there are places that move away or don't understand the traditional Japanese flavors. This place is AMAZING!! First, the food comes out and it is absolutely BEAUTIFUL! On top of that, everything I have eaten here is equally as delicious. I mostly order sashimi but love their selections of cooked items and sushi nigiri and rolls. To top it all off, the staff is so nice and attentive!! I moved away from OC so it is a special treat when I can come here.
Coming from out of state for a couple days. We really wanted to try Anjou again. So we drove to the old spot. Luckily they had a sign on the window of where they moved to (basically across the street to a more open and nicer location. This place is great. Great portions, great quality of fish, soup and tamago The service was great and the prices were great. We left full and happy for a little over $120 (no A.Y.C.E. here)
I was a commercial fisherman and know when I am getting a quality product. Once I tried Ango Tei a few years ago I have been no where else unless I was out of town. The service is top class and everyone is very friendly. Limited seating so go a little early or maybe after hours a bit on weekends but usually pretty open Sunday through mid week. Highly recommend.
Chef was very nice. Shimi was really really good Also one special hand roll wonderful
Some of the best sushi—heck, the best food—I’ve had in OC. Plus quick efficient and friendly service. Get the lemon salmon roll. Life changing!
This spot is very traditional and felt like taking a vacation to Japan. Hiro was a great tour guide. I got to learn about traditional Japanese etiquette, had the freshest fish in town. Very tasty. Thank you for being so generous.
You have to sit at the bar and order the daily specials. So fresh and so delicious. I had been looking for good sushi by the lab/camp and this place is it! Tiny but definitely worth the wait. Also while you wait you can just walk to Mitsuwa and get some cheap beer!
This place has been there fore almost 30 years! Great price for fresh, great portion of sashimi/sushi, small, simple and plain restaurant, not trendy/high end restaurant. Be there early or long wait. Max capacity 30-40 pp, but If you want real foods, this is the place.
The toro, uni, mackerel, and yellowtail were delicious and high quality, paired it with nigori. I sat at the sushi bar, and there were at least 4 patrons that were regulars. Several bought a round for the sushi chefs. Update: There is construction outside and the door is hard to spot from the street. They are still open, in the building next to 7-11.
Great sushi place. Very good chefs who gave great advice on what was freshest and tastiest for the day. Small place, but attentive staff and a friendly environment.
One of our favorite family sushi spots! I’ve been going here for years, and it never disappoints. All of the sushi is great. We love the shrimp boats!
This restaurant is not a big place but rather a private and romantic hidden whole on the wall. I had a very pleasant tasty experience enjoying every bite, my food it tasted as it look..PHENOMENAL!!. Kudol to Ango Tei staff.
Recommend sitting at the sushi bar and being served directly by the chefs. The fish is fresh and super tasty. Small place and cozy. Good for small groups
Love this place. Great service with excellent choice of sushi. Staff is very friendly as well. One of my favorite sushi spots that I regularly come back to.
Still my favorite sushi spot after 15+ years. Was just here today with a group of friends and shared the mixed tataki, and a variety of hot dishes, along with shrimp boat, scallop sushi, sake sushi, hamachi sushi. Service and food quality was as excellent as ever.
Very fresh fish and good quality sushi. This place is snall and they don't take reservations, so come as early as possible if you want good sushi and a very reasonable price. I really like their blue crab handroll and seabass egg roll. Seabass egg roll is the first time I see it on a Japanese restaurant menu, fresh fish fries to perfection with their ponzu sauce. What supprise me most is this restaurant been open since 1982, talk about tradition sushi and history. Must come if you in Orange County.
Food is heavenly, place is small and could get busy. One might think it's a little pricey for this kind of place but it's worth every penny if you enjoy authentic Japanese food.
Fish, soups, and service were good. Agadashi tofu was great. The biggest downside was that they didn't offer a sashimi combo platter. If that's not what you're looking for, then I highly recommend.
We went on a weekday evening. We were seated in the corner because the bar was full. I think we would have had better service at the bar, because the food came out piece by piece and was unusually slow. The fish itself was done well, nice generous servings. The price didn't seem justified because of the wait.
Friendly service, but the rolls were not my favorite. The sushi rice was on the cold side and it was kinda hard. We prefer Shunka for rolls.
Not the true vibe of a sushi bar I was expecting. Best thing there was the soft shell crab hand roll. All my nigiri fell apart, cuts were off, fish was iffy fresh.
Visited for lunch and ordered the sushi / sashimi lunch special ($20). The restaurant was nearly empty. Five people were seated at the counter and nobody at the tables. I chose a seat at the counter and was directed to take a seat at the end next to the kitchen door. I was perplexed on why I was being offered only the worst seat in the restaurant, when seconds later another person entered the restaurant and sat at the seat I had originally chosen. He was Asian and I am not. The rice was undercooked and the Tuna was only so-so. Less flavorful and not that enjoyable. Poor service for the bad seating. Ok for the food.
I went to this sushi restruant for lunch today I had the tampura and the rainbow roll. I didn't think it was worth the money. Flat tasting both items. Also from where I was sitting I had a great view of them washing the dishes. I am sure there are better places to go. I won't be going back. To bad the sushi boy take out closed down next door. It had better tasting sushi
When I got my Tuna (roll and sushi) it had some white larva looking stuff in it, so I asked the waitress if she could tell what it was. Her reaction was ignorant and disrespectful. Instead of carefully looking into it and bring it back to chef for further investigation, she carelessly said “it is just a crab meat” and tried to walk away from our table. I told her it was not a crab meat, and that it was inside of the tuna. Not even looking back to it, she would just say “it is just a crab meat and got mixed up with tuna when chef prepared it”. What I was irritated by wasn’t really the quality of food but her reaction and tone. Even though I tried explain her several times that it wasn’t a crab meat, and that I would like to know what I was about to eat, she would keep carelessly addressing my concerns and walked away from our table. I asked another waiter if he could bring it back to chef and find out, but the same waitress suddenly cut off the guy and came back to our table with saying again that it was nothing but crab meat. See the pictures that I took. Do you think this tuna just got mixed with the crab meat? Moreover, I don’t know why this place has such a high rating. Food was average, not worth the price they charge. It seemed like offering the authentic quality sushi made by Japanese chef, but the reality was it tasted just like any quality AYCE restaurants. (*Later I got answer to this white stuff from one of my friends (pro chef). It is the tuna tendon, and normally when you prepare/cut the fish it needs to be carefully removed with tweezer. It is considered very low-quality prepped and unprofessionally made sushi)
Horrible place to go eat sushi tiny little sushi rolls for a very expensive price not worth it!
Ive been here before. Food is on point. Seating area is super uncomfortable. I called and asked them what time they close at 927pm. The lady saif 10pm and i told her we are on our way 2 minutes away she changed her mind and said they actually closed. Horrible. Why do you do that to your customers?
We called ahead to reserve a table. When we arrived, our server admitted she had given our reservation to someone else. It ended up okay because we wound up at Wafu Sushi instead, which was a truly lovely place with extremely sensitive service and beautiful decor, but I can't remember the last time I had service so bad.
