Food is very good, large portions as well. I was waiting on waiter to refill my coffee but that never happened until when I was about to leave and the waiter offered to put my refill in a to-go cup for me. That was nice, and I had coffee for the whole afternoon. Great food, great ambience and coffee to go, definitely coming back!!
Love, love, love this place! Be sure to come hungry. They’re portions are large. You definitely get what you pay for regarding quality and quantity. The servers are friendly and attentive. The Black Bear hot sauces were so good I had to take one home with me!
Not sure who was who but Jakob and Kevin were listed on my receipt. Guys were nice and quick. Great service. Will be back when in town again.
A great start to the day, fresh hot and fresh. Had been greet by magr who also ensured i could be out in 30 mins, he went and cooked and made my omelet and I was out happy and fed.
We had a great experience yesterday at Black Bear in Davis. I'm surprised that after living in town for almost 9 years, we only went in yesterday for the first time. The waiter was polite, professional and made sure we had a great time. The food was great and the ambience very pleasant. We live a few blocks away from the restaurant, so we plan on going every month now. Amazing!!!
Come here hungry and you’re treated right. Big portions. Friendly service. No one cares about your GPA — just whether your coffee’s full. Black Bear Diner is built on something UC Davis lost a long time ago: common sense, warmth, and value. UC Davis, on the other hand, is one of the most aggressively marketed schools on the West Coast. The branding is slick — sustainability, innovation, diversity — but once you're in, the story changes. The reality? A bureaucratic machine that too often punishes ambition. If you’re independent, outspoken, or too smart, you’ll learn fast: you're not being nurtured — you’re being contained. Professors may block your growth, and TAs might treat you like a problem instead of a peer. It’s a campus that values compliance over creativity. Worse? The numbers back it up. According to U.S. News, the median salary after 10 years of enrolling is only $54K — which is shocking considering the cost and reputation they try to sell. The return on investment is low, especially for a school that acts like it’s top-tier Ivy-adjacent. The truth is: UC Davis is a decent school for average students who stay in line. But if you're bright, driven, and thinking independently? It’ll either ignore you or try to fix you. Five stars to Black Bear Diner — for honesty, value, and delivering what it promises. Davis might have the college, but this diner is the real institution in town
Good selection of food and it tastes great. Awesome service, and very fun atmosphere. Such a good place its often busy when you get there in the mornings. Make a reservation.
Lots of seating, which comes in handy during busy weekends when the whole university and their parents roll into town. Food was good - better than I was anticipating. The mocha cold brew was kind of amazing actually -- I'm not a coffee snob, but I certainly appreciate a good coffee and this was really good. Solid choice overall!
This place is popular on Saturday mornings. The wait wasn't too bad, about 10 minutes. They have the best bacon I've ever tasted! I always get the "little less" breakfast: egg scrambled, bacon, biscuit (which is HUGE) and fruit (which was fresh and tasty). Their iced tea is also good. The manager was very friendly as well as the server.
Martha did a excellent job taking care of us, and real was informative to get me a great tasting item as I tend to be indecisive, thank you Martha.
I really like this restaurant. It's kind of a country feel, with good country food.
This is definitely one of the best places in Davis for really any time of the day. Great breakfast, good dinner, and tasty dessert all at a realistic price for proportion. I have yet to have a negative experience and have been upwards of 10 times thus far and will be going back. The staff is friendly and quick with orders. The restaurant is clean and has a positive environment. This is a great location for causal dates or to eat after a busy day. I would highly recommend to anyone looking for a place with good American food.
Thry had apparently just had a rush so we had to wait for them to clear tables.
Not a big fan of black bear chain restaurants But this one in Davis did a FANTASTIC eggs Benedict that I would come back for without a doubt… service was quick and perfect! Shredded Hashbrown was solid!
We love this location and travel to this one every time over the one in our own town. The staff here anre always amazing, especially a server named Kaylee. Ask for him when you dine here!
We’ve been here multiple times since moving to Davis and always excellent service. Especially impressed by Jacob—that guy is fantastic with both adults and kids alike!
I had spotted the Black Bear Diner on my way over to Hinkberry Hacklesack's High Colonic Clinic - The Royal Flush over on Turdle Way, and knew right then and there were I was going to eat! So, as soon as I was finished dropping off the drum of Slippery Doo gel..I was out of there. The last time I was in a Black Bear Diner I had the Yankee Pot Roast, and let me tell you something...it was Man-O-Man Amazing! Ask for it in a big bowl with mashed potatoes right in there with it...nothing better on a cold night. 5 stars ☆☆☆☆☆
The food was good! Better than the other Black bear diners I’ve been to from my area. My waiter Jakob was quick to take my order and provided a very friendly atmosphere. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
This place has it's ups and downs. It's a diner with decent food and big portions. I go here on holidays when everywhere else is closed. Every Easter, Thanksgiving, etc., they are open and our server has been Joe the last 3 times. He has been awesome. I'm not a holiday guy, but we keep coming back for our official unofficial non holiday brunch. Joe keeps it fun and we're looking forward to the next one. Thanks BB&J!
Always a classic experience at the Black Bear Diner. Usually, I can't resist the breakfast-all-day specials, but this time branched out to try the hamburger salad—delicious!
Black bear diner knows how to treat their customers, much unlike the local university. When the professors and my mom try to bring me down, I know servers like Jakob can cheer me back up with a nice plate of eggs and bacon. 10/10 will continue to visit
No matter what i order the food is always good here with easy parking and friendly staff its a great place to be for any easy morning meal.
The food was good. The waitress was inattentive. It wasn't busy but she never once checked in on us. My coffee never got refilled, once the food was served I realized we had only one set of silverware so I had to track down the waitress for more, which only left my party of four with one napkin.
My wife and I stopped for dinner the other night, and we had a wonderful experience. The food was great, and our server, Cody was awesome. He was very friendly and was also very patient with us. Will we definitely return. Thank you.
Went this morning and everything was great. Had a Denver omelet and it was HUGE. The place was cute and I really liked the juke box. My server Kylee was so polite and made sure we were looked after the entire time we were there.
Had the best experience as a first time Black Bear diner customer! It was so yummy and my waiter Jayden was super friendly and welcoming. I felt at home at the restaurant thank you!
Busy but attentive. waitress checked on us. Had BLT. Daughter had chicken strips that were too crunchy for her but she is on the picky side. BLT is tasty.
My daughters love Black Bear diner for their all day breakfast menu and their great service. Whenever we travel, they search for nearby Black Bear Diner. That's how we ended up at Black Bear Diner Davis while driving back from Lake Tahoe and we were not disappointed. My daughter loved her pancakes and I loved their Veggi Omlette
Nice place!!! Wow, finally decided to go and eat there from a recommendation of a friend. Food was good, atmosphere was nice, and service was great. My server Jacob was really goofy, mabye had a bit too much caffeine, but his service was exception. Didn't even have to ask to get my water refilled!! I even got a cool Black Bear shirt after my meal.
We had a great experience eating here in the afternoon! Very friendly, attentive service staff. I got the chicken fried steak from the dinner "less" section but it was still a filling meal. The items from the normal menu were of a bigger portion size, especially the biscuits which were massive. Quite worth the price for sit-down service. Don't be daunted by the sizable menu, look out for recommended items and staff are more than willing to share their suggestions. Everyone was wearing masks and the booths/seats are spread out. Check out this place for a family-friendly meal and classic American fare!
I just love their club sandwich. It's a good place to take kids. They like the atmosphere and food. The last few times Cody has been me server. He is always smiling and very helpful.

Food was great, and service was even better! Cody went above and beyond to make sure our meal was perfect. The coffee was so good and I'm already wanting another stack of pancakes- yum!

It's a smaller Black Bear than I'm used to but still should have had more than one waitress. She disappeared a few times, only came by to check on us once before we even gor our food, and took forever to bring our food from the window. I also don't think she really knew the menu. The food was room temperature at best when it got to us but was still pretty good. The veggie burger could have been cooked a little longer because it just fell apart when I started eating it. The gluten free options here wete abysmal. My cousin normally orders hashbrowns from the Black Bear near her but was told they're not gluten free here and she has a pretty bad gluten allergy. The hashbrowns that two other diners at our table ordered were somehow both over and undercooked and stale from sitting in the window. But the main part of all dishes were very good minus anything that had potatoes. Probably won't be back to this location.
It was really hot that day. The air conditioner didn't seem to be working in the front of the dining room. The food was great and our hostess and waiter were very nice.
The time I visited late, they had no sweet potato fries. I was crushed.
Overall this place is great if your stopping for a quick and large meal cause otherwise I would look elsewhere. The service was awesome always topping off coffee and cleaning empty plates off the small tables but the small tables do become an issue. Coming for breakfast on a cold morning and having to pay for a refill of milk (And nearly every other drink that wasnt water or coffee) was disheartening and it felt like a rush to eat because the service just keeps bringing large plates of food and pancakes that end up getting cold because they refuse to wait to serve the pancakes despite me asking many times before.
We just recently moved to Davis and finally tried the Black Bear Diner here. It was a good experience overall, but there's some room for improvement. I'm physically disabled (use a walker), and we were seated promptly, but it took awhile for anyone to take our order. Mostly college students working there, who were busy chatting behind the counter while we waited. We orderer burgers fries and onion rings, and I would say the food was a 7/10. The burgers weren't as good as we expected, the meat patties were a bit small, the lettuce was wilty, but the fries were crispy. The onion rings were the best, nice and crunchy, great flavor with this amazing bacon ranch dip. We brought home a banana cream pie to share, and it was extremely disappointing, with no real crust to speak of, just crumbs, very little actual banana and the filling was so-so. We will probably go back to try other items, but not their desserts.
Am adding this to my favorite restaurant list. Sad that we don't have one near us. Staff is friendly and quick to fulfill requests. Homey ambiance. clean rest rooms. Ordered pasta with pesto sauce and chicken, California eggs Benedict (has tomato, avocado and spinach - love it!), kiddie steak and The Grizz breakfast (includes fluffy pancakes). All mouthwatering-ly delicious, huge servings, served quick and hot. They need bigger tables; plates are big :o) Will definitely visit again.
We arrived at 4:30pm on a Sunday and Black Bear was out of Tri-tip and Chicken. Wr ordered a Turkey Club and BLT with sweet potato fries. Each was good.
Our favorite restaurant needs this review. Twice we experienced a problem with the kitchen. First, Thanksgiving our stuffing was very salty, they ran out of gravy, and portions were smaller. On Christmas day we had breakfast there, my girl asked for her eggs medium: however the eggs came runny and almost clear (uncooked). So she requested again and next order came the eggs looked over-easy. We asked for our country potatoes to be crispy but this time they weren't. So to the cooks please take heart and hear your loyal customers. Thank you
Really cozy atmosphere with a cabin-like feel. There can be quite a bit of wait (up to two hours) on weekends so plan accordingly. Has all the classic American foods. The servers are all super nice and accommodating, but during busy times they can get caught up in the chaos so you’ll need to be patient.
I’ve only been here for breakfast and the service has been attentive and friendly and I always have to take some of my omelette and potatoes home since they serve large portions. I would prefer smaller portions and a lower price. Almost $20 each for breakfast. Because of the high price, usually a wait to be seated, and not ample parking available during the busy time and having to take the bill up myself to pay is the reason for the less than perfect score. Food quality and service were good.

Food was good, just not cooked enough.
tried the chicken sandwich. it was okay. the sweet potato fries were good. wish they had some chicken burger selections. Kids got ice cream with their kids meal after 11am. that's their favorite part. has a parking lot, convenient parking.
Food was extra basic Service was so so Atmosphere was the best part
Mediocre breakfast. It’s hot and what you would expect a cheap greasy dinner to taste like. The service was not that great. The servers were super busy since it was a weekend morning, but I shouldn’t have been trying to call a waiter for >30 minutes to tell her about a drink I ordered over an hour ago….
I was here for dinner and overall it was a good experience. My server was efficient and fast. I ordered the chicken fried steak which was quite satisfactory, I liked the sauce too. The cole slaw however was bland and didn't taste fresh at all, seems like it was sitting on the fridge for days! Perhaps they should make an effort to improve the cole slaw or remove it from the menu.
Great Food - Horrible Service Sticky counter, food under the place mat, no silverware - had to ask for some, no pepper, pepper brought was so filthy the cap was completely plugged, had to ask for the bill before they'd clean the plate which had nothing left on it to be eaten.... If I could tip the cooks I would - but NEVER that kind of service.
The food was fine, the atmosphere unfortunately had too loud of music to carry on a conversation over top of all of the other conversations going on. I understand a restaurant has to have ambiance, but when the restaurant has ambience more like a bar it doesn't make for a good meal time. Not one of my favs.
Service was unusually slow. I had to get up and ask for coffee, and there was about 15 minutes waiting before anyone asked for my order. Chicken Fried Steak was OK fries were soggy. I was not impressed.
Dinner time wasn't the best, we'll stick with breakfast. Thought about my BD dinner last week with family, mound of lettuce on salads, large and long pieces we had to cut, cornbread muffins were so cold the refrigerated butter wouldn't melt... Mac & cheese was so cold, they were going to make it over, but when it arrived back with the pepper that was on it when it left, was still cold? Lastly the two different deluxe sandwiches 1/2 the bread was dry, lacking cheese, meat, lettuce, tomato and mayo were little. Gluten free was $14.95 + Gluten free bread charge, smaller than an adults hand. Total of 4 tables were being served (1, 3, 4 & 6) about 8PM, restroom and hallways smelled musty.
The service was not the best. We were seated and no one came around to see if we needed anything. The server did no offer water , never came around to see if we needed anything but she was busy watching her daughter at the counter.. Once we were serve , we had to ask for utensils , no second round of coffee was iffer , she never came around until she us the check at that point we let her know three items were never provided. She apologized but too late . I was too tired to say anything. But I will never go there again.
Unfortunately, the experience was not good. We really like the Black Bear chain, but this location was disappointing. My family and I were coming back from a trip and stopped for dinner. The air conditioning was cold. We told the waitress, but she didn't pay attention. So we decided to take it back to eat in the car. The fries, bacon, and hamburger were burnt. It's a shame the food wasn't good.
It was fine for a late breakfast. Not fabulous but the omelet was fine for what we needed.

This place has really gone downhill. Made me feel gross and didn't even taste good.
Laughably poor service experience from Nadia. I somehow left the restaurant less hydrated than when I arrived. Have to give an extra star for Riley (?) up front, made the whole experience better. Perhaps he should be on the floor instead of hosting. Just my two cents.
Ordered to go. No utensils or napkins. No salt or pepper and the food was cold and lacking flavor except the biscuits and gravy & bacon 😔 server should have proactively recommended remaking the order since it sat in a bag on the shelf for about 40 minutes.
Just ordered chili for myself and a co-worker from the Davis location. It's supposed to come with sour cream, cheese and onions, and a cornbread muffin. I got back to the office with plain chili, just the extra cheese I requested, no sour cream, no onions, and NO CORNBREAD. WTH? Extremely disappointing. Also the chili flavor is not balanced well; it's very vinegar-heavy and tart.
Went there for our anniversary celebration cos it came up first when looking for a diner. The food wasn’t worth the hype. That’s all I can say cos I don’t know want to go into details and ruin it completely. Waitress( she’s got a petite body) who welcomed us and got us a table was really kind and hardworking but they switched her to a guy, don’t know why. Food is bland, pricey, gave a 25% tip at the counter when I wanted to pay and didn’t get a thank you from the waiter. I detest when people lack gratitude. N.B- if I do go back there to eat, I won’t be giving a tip! That way, I won’t worry if I got a thank you or not.
food was very under cook and not prepared how was asked. They didn't have ingredients as other restaurants carried. Location was not keep very clean.

I sat there waiting for 30 minutes before got served. And the waitress asked me to pay my bill at the front desk after I finished. She's seemly polite, but I can tell the discrimination.
This was a good place to eat in Davis we would eat there 3 times a week .but since the old manager and the waitresses and waiters left they brought a new manager and a whole new crew. it has fallen apart .we still gave them 3 or 4 chances thinking it would fet better but it never did.our food's was always burnt or unde r and if you say anything to them they would say what do you want us to do about it. They need to bring the old manager back and the old crew back we will never go back there again we went today they had one waitress he said cuz of graduation that his crew is off.Im sure he knew they were going to be a graduation he should have figured it out way before today and I do have pictures of our chicken strips being burnt twice on the same day wd couldn't eat it you couldn't chew it you couldn't even break it in half to eat it the chicken strips it's terrible it's like the one in Woodland now we come all the way to Davis to eat because it was so good here and the people that work there was so nice we would have given them -1 star if we could .
I came to eat breakfast because they have a big sign outside advertising their 10.99 dollar breakfast, I was over charged and my server added an extra item on my order that I did not ask for. When I confronted her about it she denied it and continued to say that’s what I ordered. Okay let’s just move on now to the food. Not only was my food over priced but dry, no seasoning and cold. And let me tell you I had just two eggs, bacon, potatoes. Eggs, under cooked. Same for potatoes. The bacon was miraculously good, but also cold. The only nice thing about today’s experience was the host. He was so nice polite and great big smile, (the asian younger guy)
I ordered takeout on Uber Eats here in 2021 and it was the most awful food I ever had, with multiple missing items and a completely burnt steak. Clearly the kitchen does not like Uber Eats and would rather spit in the food than make it properly for their takeout customers. I gave this place a chance again 3 years later on Thanksgiving 2024 ordering a 3 course Turkey Dinner and again I had to throw away most of the food since it made me sick from how bad it was. The turkey was dry and flavorless with canned store bought gravy. The Italian Green Beans were the worst tasting beans I've ever had and the soup was just vile. Pumpkin pie tasted just like Costco one which you can get for way cheaper. Waste of $30. Way to ruin Thanksgiving with a raccoon dinner. Maybe other Black Bear Diners are better, but the Davis location is just the worst.
Traveling for work and I wanted a sit down breakfast that wasn’t a hotel breakfast. So I ended up at Black Bear in Davis. Walking in I waited 5 minutes for the hostess. Turns out the host was the server and she didn’t move very fast nor was she concerned that I walked in and was just standing around patiently. Once seated the server took my order. The food came fast as the place wasn’t busy. I expected it to be hot because it came so fast. The hash browns were cold, the over medium eggs were crispy with runny whites. The biscuit was microwaved to a stale cool temp. The bacon was the only thing I ate. Do yourself a favor and skip this place. The server and Antonio the cook both seemed like they hate their life. Their attitude is displayed in boring, bland, lukewarm food. Sorry but 1 star Black Bear👎🏽
We were seated quickly. And our beverage order was taken quickly. I ordered coffee and waited 10 minutes for creamer, despite asking twice. After ordering our food it took a very long time to arrive. Our waitress was no where to he seen and I saw our food sitting on the counter for several minutes before she showed back up. When the food arrived it was barely warm. My son's hollandaise sauce was congealed, and grits were a solid mass. My hash browns were greasy and inedible, the scrambled eggs were ok. My daughter's cinnamon bun french toast was rubbery and also inedible. Her fruit cup had rotten strawberries. My husband's ham and cheese omelette was ok, but still barely warm. I would definitely not recommend eating there, and will not be back.
Very bad experience. Service took quite a bit of time to get us coffee and waters. One of our omelets was burned. We expressed our displeasure in a kind way. We did not receive an apology nor a conversation with a manager. They did not even offer to remake the omelet. We are very unhappy with this experience and do not recommend.
Had an hour to get something to eat. Stopped at the Black Bear Diner in Davis, California. Was initially seated and given a coffee. I waited for 25 minutes with no further service or attention. No one came to take the order or make any other inquiries. There was only two floor people working and one was working the register. After waiting the 25 minutes, I went to the register and informed the cashier that I could no longer wait to be served or put in my order. He charged me $4.10 for a lousy cup of coffee. (You would think they would not be concerned about it due to their incompetence). I paid for the lousy coffee, voiced my dissatisfaction and left. I have never had such a rotten experience at a Black Bear Diner in the past. It is definitely on my "No Go" list for the future!
The morning cook doesn't know how to cook eggs. We ordered over medium so we'd have cooked whites and runny yolks, but the whites were still runny. We semt them back and asked for scrambled so they'd at least be cooked. He overcooked the scrambled eggs, brown and hard on the outside. Plus the grits were so lumpy they were inedible.
I have really bad stomach pain after eating here. I ordered a steak and might as well say it was raw. I tried to stomach it and took the rest to go. I’m definitely throwing the rest away because I think I may have food poisoning. The food here is never good, tastes like it was thawed and microwaved. This is my last time coming to this place.
Our server was terrible today. Our food was delivered cold and then it took us 2 -3 mins to get him to come back before we could ask him for silverware, he came back and said he’d be back with the rest of our meal, however it wasn’t until the end of our meal that I finally saw him again and asked him if he could just give us the rest of it to go …. he seemed to want to do anything but server his TWO tables he had, the other servers around him were busting their butts. Wish we would have been sat in Martha or the other blonde guys section. Not Cody’s … I only left a tip because my father would have been mad at me if I didn’t. (Also very large chunks in my ranch …. Seems to be bacon… never hear of that at our Great Reno location )
