Great restaurant that makes their own tortillas. Salsa doesn’t taste like canned tomato sauce. You can see them chopping fresh cilantro. Peppers they use for chile rellenos were firm, meaning they most likely aren’t frozen (could have been grilled longer, though, but still perfectly acceptable). I can taste the tequila- good sign they most likely don’t cheap out on alcohol with cocktails. Some of the better Hispanic food we’ve had on the East coast so far.
Guapos is probably the best place for dinner if you're in this shopping center and dont want to go far after a Target or Best Buy run. Their fajitas are to die for. Enchiladas were amazing with tons of flavor. Service was very friendly and constantly checking up on us during a busy night. Prices were fair for the area and they gave us big portions.
We had a great time at Guapo’s! The food was fresh, flavorful, and came out sizzling hot—just the way we like it. We ordered a mix of meats, tacos, rice, beans, tamales, and even a margarita… everything was delicious. You can really tell they use quality ingredients. The service was excellent too—super professional and very attentive without being overbearing. The staff checked in just the right amount and made us feel welcome the whole time. Loved the vibe inside—perfect spot for family dinner or a casual night out. Definitely coming back again. Highly recommend if you’re craving good Tex-Mex in Fairfax!
We love this place. Family owned and absolutely hands down Mexican food. Yes, you might pay a little more, but you get quality food and good portions. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Never had a bad meal there.
We stopped in for dinner while visiting family in town. We had a great experience! The staff was exceptional! They explained the options well and were very patient in waiting for us to decide on some things. The food and drinks were delicious! We really enjoyed our time and would certainly go again.
First we only walked in for a table of two and we got a table immediately on a Thursday. Appetizers was squid and it was cooked perfectly. We hadn’t finished it yet and got our main course. My husband got enchiladas and I had shrimp tacos. The food was very flavorful and the portions were awesome. He got a scoop of ice cream and I got Flan. Overall was a good experience and we highly recommend you all to eat here. Our service crew was Ethan and Frank. They both did a wonderful job and very positive. Price was affordable and we will definitely be going back.
Vibrant with excellent food and festive atmosphere. Great outdoor seating if weather permits. For being situated in a shopping area parking lot it does NOT feel like that at all with this restaurant.
I recently visited a Mexican restaurant that came highly recommended. The interior decor was beautifully crafted with traditional Mexican elements, creating an immersive and authentic ambiance. The food was flavorful and well-prepared. The grilled Guapo Pulpo (Octopus) was a standout, accompanied by well-complemented condiments. The generous serving of portobello burrito with beans, rice, guacamole, and salad was satisfying. The refreshing horchata provided a delightful contrast to the savory and tangy dishes. The service was attentive, and I had a pleasant dining experience at the restaurant. Update: Nov-27-2025 This family-owned Tex-Mex chain restaurant at Fair Lakes Shopping Center in Fairfax radiates warmth and cheer, especially during the holiday season. It’s beautifully decorated with a large Christmas tree at the center of the dining area, surrounded by ornaments, trimmings, red ribbons, and wreaths, creating a cozy, welcoming atmosphere. The vibrant Mexican touches add lively, authentic charm, making the space feel even more special. The food is consistently flavorful, made with fresh ingredients, and cooked to perfection, ensuring every bite is delightful. We truly appreciated that the restaurant remained open on Thanksgiving, allowing us to enjoy a lovely meal with loved ones. With friendly service and an inviting ambiance, I wholeheartedly recommend this spot to anyone looking to experience the best of Mexican cuisine right in the area. The food we tried was outstanding, and we highly recommend: 1. Ceviche Mixto stands out brilliantly, perfectly complemented by a selection of condiments, fresh, tasty, and tangy—an excellent appetizer. 2. Plantains are well-fried and bring out the sweetness effectively. 3. Fried Calamari, cooked with fresh calamari, generous portions, and tasty, paired with homemade garlic aioli, making it even more appetizing. 4. Steak Fajita, served on a sizzling platter with sautéed greens; the steak is well-grilled, and all the other condiments, including pico de gallo, are delicious and homemade. Eating it with a warm, homemade tortilla was excellent. 5. Mariscada, a Spanish-style seafood stew with lots of seafood cooked with saffron to give it that rich yellow color. Great for cold weather. 6. Pescado en Salsa Cancun, grilled salmon fillet served with shrimp, scallops, white rice, and beans. Tasty and satisfying. 7. Refreshing drinks like horchata and bunny (carrot-apple-ginger) juice; they are cooling, tasty, and provide a perfect contrast to savory and tangy Latin-inspired Mexican dishes.
Food was great! Service was good. It was crowded but we didn't wait long for a table. Would definitely go back to try something new!
The food was delicious. I think one of the best chips and salsa I have had. They have the thin fresh chips so everyone has a preference, if you prefer thicker chips it may not be for you. The homemade hot sauce was very tasty. I had three tacos, Lengua, shrimp and vegetables. All the best were lengua and shrimp and ordered tres leches to go. Everyone else enjoyed their meal as well. I didn’t order the margaritas but the reviews were all good and very one said they tasted very good. I took an away a star from atmosphere rating because the tables are really close together.
Great customer server and food. Started with tortilla chips and salsa. The salsa was delicious and seemed fresh made rather than out of the can. I had chicken steak fajita, the steak tasted homemade and loved the seasoning. The tortillas were soft and fresh made in the restaurant. The rice beans were perfectly made and seasoned. Would definitely be visiting again
Great food and service. The management is top notch. All the staff knows their roles which creates a pleasant dining experience. The food has been excellent the past few visits and we will go back again.
1st things first-EXPENSIVE!!!! $130 (tip included) for four people with only water but we did have two desserts and an appetizer with our meals. But I’m assuming it’s closer to average for the area and the portions are big enough for leftovers so essentially you’re getting two meals for the price of one. I just have such a hard time dropping a c-note for four people. 2nd-they do steal dishes RIGHT!! So good. We went on a weekday at 4:15. We had no trouble getting in but once we were inside, it took quite a long time to have our orders taken. There was an employee meeting during the time of us being seated so we were ignored for at least 20 minutes. The food was excellent! The restaurant (Fairfax location) was clean. The nachos were so cheesy and good. The fajita steak is crave-able and worth the wait. The cheese enchiladas had the perfect ratio of yellow cheese filling and topping. All of the food tasted fresh and if you don’t order anything else, get a side of tortillas which are freshly made on the spot. The corn tamale thingy (an appetizer) was big and delicious. It’s like a sweet corn tamale with no meat inside. It is quite sweet though so if you don’t like sweet street corn or sweet corn in general, you may want to order something different. Just my opinion-but I would skip the dessert. It was just okay to me. The sopapillas did not have enough honey on them and they were at best lukewarm. They were doughy and not crispy as I have had at some restaurants before. I wouldn’t have minded the doughy texture so much if they had been warmed and drizzled in warm honey or sugar or anything. The cheesecake crust is the absolute best but the actual cheesecake was flavorless to me. I will go back again but this time I will share a main dish, skip the appetizer and skip the dessert. I understand the staff is trying to be efficient and clear the tables in a timely fashion but they stood right over us and as soon as we put our forks down, they were scooping or trying to take the plates away. I had to stop the server because I needed a box for leftovers. That was a little annoying. Didn’t get a full breath out before they were trying to take something away. That’s just me though. Someone else might think that’s fast customer service. Other than that, the wait and the price, it was fantastic.
Excellent service and food. I think Tex-Mex really only gets so good, but this is probably the best place I have been to. The free chips and salsa were amazing. The give you two salsas, one cold and chunky (best salsa ever) and one warm and more watery, which I didn’t care for. We had the bacon wrapped shrimp and grilled steak burrito. Both were very good. The main dining room is like a great hall with really high ceilings. They break out conga drums for happy birthday songs. Fun place to eat with good food and service.
Great food & great atmosphere! Thursday nights have an upbeat Latin band that adds even more to the positive vibe there! Waitstaff is always friendly and professional, tasty drinks and delicious food! Guapos is always a good choice 🍻
Food was great, the fish tacos are delicious and the steak fajitas are out of this world. The steak fajitas are enough easily for 2 people as they come with 3 tortillas, rice, veggies, sour cream, beans, tomatoes and guacamole. The fish tacos come with rice, lemons and sauce as well. The prices are reasonable as well. We will come again.
Everything was delicious!! The food was amazing, service was amazing! Everyone was friendly and attentive. We started with guacamole and chips. Probably ate way more chips than I should have. I had tonight's special fried red snapper with guacamole salad and black beans. Amazing. We also had the seafood stew (Mariscada). Wow, I will be back for more stew. Spanish-style seafood stew with scallops, shrimp, fresh salmon, squid, and clams cooked with saffron. Served with white rice on the side. For dessert, we had sopapillas. Very light and fluffy. Not sweet at all.
Worth ebery penny, steak fajita , calamari and guacamole was perfect
Food is delicious and fresh. The chimichangas with ground beef is especially good. Spanish rice includes a nice selection. Of vegetables including carrots and peas. Service is quick, friendly and attentive. Empty dishes cleared before you can think to ask and refillable drinks appear without asking.
My family and I made reservations for a party of 10. 2 kids, 8 adults. The ambiance is nice, customer service is great. However, everyone's food was cold. I'm not quite sure the reason being is because the cook in back rather have everyone to come out at the same time, therefore they have the food waiting under lights in the kitchen. A bit disappointed because the food was cold other than that everything was just fine.
While visiting from Texas, my mom and I ate at Guapo’s restaurant with my brother. I had low expectations. I was very pleasantly surprised. The food was absolutely delicious! From the amazing queso, to the margaritas, to our main courses, every bite was delicious. Our waitress, Sara, was awesome! Will definitely go back if we make it back to Fairfax.
Dude. This place will probably be my all time top 2 restaurants. ESPECIALLY this location!! The service is ALWAYS like being at a Michelin star restaurant, the food is outstanding and FRESH. to top it all off, the authentic atmosphere makes you feel like you’re in Mexico. Whoever owns this got it 100% right. PLEASE. Go here
For Yesterday I want to highlight the excellent service that waitress JAMILLE gave us!!! Their attention was fantastic and really made our experience at the restaurant memorable. At first, I wasn't sure about going with my friends, because they are a little complicated and have several food allergies. However, Jamile took the time to explain in detail the ingredients of each dish and to offer us personalized recommendations.!! Without a doubt, she is the best waitress I have had in this place. I also want to thank you for keeping the space so beautiful and cozy, it's always a pleasure to visit it ☺️
Just went there today for lunch with a work colleague. It came recommended by a corporate advisor and did not disappoint. The atmosphere is terrific, I would consider bringing a significant other here. Service was excellent through and through. The manager, Juan, even came to check on us as a courtesy, but didn’t need to. My work colleague and I both got the steak burrito. They even ask you how you like your steak cooked, which was a surprise cause what? People never ask that and it came out cooked perfectly (I asked for medium-rare). Not only that but the seasoning in the burrito was perfect. The different sauces that it came with were great and the chips’n’salsa were made fresh, delicious. Also, the burrito was handheld and had the perfect crust cooked outside the tortilla. It disappeared before I could take a photo. I will be coming back, for sure. Cheers.
The service was fast 🏃♀️ 🏃♂️ !!! The waitresses was great !! The food was amazing!! Had the steak, shrimp, and broiled chicken with sauted onions and green peppers, with hot melted butter. The appetizer, Had queso, with jalapenos, chips and salsa. Also spinach rice and beans. The atmosphere was awesome !! People were really enjoying themselves. Had a window seat, which allowed me to see the colorful leaves. Prices were affordable. Can't wait to come back . Job well done with this restaurant !!!!! 💯💯💯💯💯 Restaurant of the year 2025 THANK YOU !!!!!!!
Guapos largest differentiator versus other Tex mex spots is their attention to detail in seasoning their meats! The fajitas have turned into my kids favorite steak and Chiken.. even compared to a steakhouse. They just love the cook on it and mostly the flavor profile is second to none. Guapos does Tex mex better cu their recipe is better. Go on weekdays for the best experience!
Christian and Katrina were awesome . They deserve a raise . Very friendly and engaging. Good employee s . Great customer service. It was busy and they were handling the bar and patio area like a pro . Thank you
This guapos location always has great service across the board. However, yesterday I got one of the best service that really stood out by Jamie in the bar area. Jamie was very attentive and friendly. He also informed me about their brunch, which I never knew they had. I really wanted to give Jamie a big Shoutout for giving great service and hope that the company gives him the recognition he deserves.
Food here is great. I had the chicken fajitas, really tender and tasty chicken. They don’t give enough grilled onions/vegetables on the plate. Other than that, very good. The steak enchiladas were also not bad. Steak was cooked very well and had tasty spicing. Atmosphere is amazing!! Service was extremely slow…but the place was full.
Great food and portion fitting. A few more expensive items on the menu. Plenty choices to pick from. Some items just aren’t worth the money. It got quite loud so it was difficult to carry on a conversation. Have both indoor and outdoor seating.
My wife and I love Guapos. This was our first time at this location in Fairfax. It wasn't the same as other locations. Usually the service is top notch. The bartender seemed over whelmed and had to look for him to get our order placed. But overall the food was consistent and that's all I have to say.
It's a festive and fun place to go. The food, ground beef enchilada plate, is tasty and abundant. The chips and salsa, the Cadillac margaritas are very good. The only thing that makes me wonder is why they always seat us in the hot sun.
Made arrangements for a party of 20. Only one server was assigned. By the time she took drink order two tables were seated next to us and were already served food and drinks. A total of 45 minutes were taken between drinks and meal orders. Saving grace ... food tasted much better than the $18 small margaritas.
The restaurant doesn't impress us; for a Mexican place, it is quite pricey. It feels like just another typical Mexican restaurant with salsa music. With so many talented Mexican musicians, this restaurant has good music, but it's not Mexican.
Our waiter, Eduardo, was awesome! Great service. Good food…I had the chicken fajita with a passionfruit margarita. The beans and tortillas were homemade (nothing out of a can). For the price of the food $$$$, I felt rushed to finish eating. I was still eating when I was asked if I need a to-go box. Overall, it was a good experience. You should give it a try.
The menu boasted an impressive array of Mexican delicacies, and I was delighted to discover that the food lived up to the high expectations. Each dish I tried was bursting with authentic flavors, from the tangy salsa to the perfectly seasoned Chicken Fajitas and Gaucamole. The service was top-notch, with the staff being knowledgeable, attentive, and passionate about the cuisine they served. The restaurant's ambiance was a delightful blend of traditional and modern, creating a comfortable and enjoyable dining experience. Overall, it exceeded my expectations with its delicious Mexican fare, excellent service, and inviting atmosphere, making it a must-visit for any Mexican food lover.
I guess 3rd time is the charm. Didn't find a table the first two times we came in. They had a long wait both times. We managed to get a table on Black Friday 2024! The restaurant was bustling, and tables continued to fill in. We started with their house margarita..it was very good. No wonder every table had one. Though the price of $ 25 for a large one was a bit steep....but we did enjoy the drink. We ordered a plate of chicken nachos... slightly different from our expectations, but again, the flavor was great, and it did not disappoint. It isn't a plate of loaded nachos that one expects at most mexican restaurants, but the taste was right there. D For our entrees, we ordered Nogales, that's Chicken Fajitas with shrimp Diablo and Masitas de Puerco al Horno,a slow roasted pork dish in Spanish sauce topped with sauteed onions. The fajitas were standard.. made well, but what stood out were their fresh tortillas...fresh and very flavorful. The pork dish was the dish of the meal for us, a very unique dish, and we all enjoyed it a lot. It is very different from all the regular pork stews and dishes served at Mexican places. We lived in California for 18 years, and Guapos is the first mexican restaurant in the area that didn't disappoint us and held its own i n comparison to the great mexican food we have been exposed to on the West Coast !
Visited Guapos for lunch. Staff was very polite and upbeat. They always came around to check on our drinks and overall satisfaction. We got a ceviche, tacos, and meat. The restaurant's aesthetic is very on point with tex-mex. Love it!
The service is amazing! I wish I could say the same about the food though. The rice and beans were too salty. I'm giving an extra star just for the fresh churros they made us.
1JAN25: Dish1: Chimichanga with shredded chicken (hot sauce added) $16 Dish2: Two chicken and one steak tacos (lunch special) $20 Drink: Blackberry mojito $13 Steak was cooked well done when medium was requested. Tacos were very messy due to marinade drippings. Otherwise, very good tacos. The price seems a bit steep at $20 for a lunch special. Chimichanga was delicious but I was hoping it would be more crispy. The burrito wasn't soggy, but quickly became difficult to cut cleanly. A bit more fry time will crisp it up. Drink was as good as it looked. Service was great, no complaints. Thin, warm, and crispy house chips with house salsa is a must.
We went there as a party of three for lunch and was immediately greeted by beautiful traditional decor. We were promptly seated to our table and attended to and had a attentive server. The prices were on the higher side but the portions were big. I was a little let down by the taste of the food as it was a little bland but overall, it was an enjoyable experience and I would recommend it!
Atmosphere was great! Service was pretty good, with exception of once we got our food, service dropped off a bit. Had to flag the sever down for refills on drinks and when we were ready to go for the to go boxes and check. Also, my seafood soup did not show up with the rest of my food so it was delayed getting to me towards the end of our meal. The seafood soup was majority calamari with just a few shrimp and a couple scallops which was a bit of a disappointment. We did enjoy sitting outside under the overhanging on a beautiful sunny day which made the lunch very pleasant. Prices were a bit on the high side for what you get but we did enjoy eating lunch there overall! Would we eat there again.. yes.
The food was fantastic but our server paid us almost no attention. It was hard to even get the bill. We've been here many times and enjoy our time but this last time was a little off. I highly recommend the steak and chicken fajitas and the steak chimchira (sp?). It's so good.
QUALITY IS DROPPING!!! It is worth mentioning that the current state of this restaurant is incomparable to how it was a year+ ago. They’re starting to cheap out on the way they’re making their food but raise the prices. Today I got the chicken fajita, and I won’t lie it was good, but it had an odd taste. It tasted a bit more like plain chicken and something else. But then I notice that my plate had more onion than peppers. OMG! THIS PLACE IS A ONION HAVEN. The complimentary pico de gallo that comes with the chips has more onion than tomato. My fajita had more onion than tomato. It was like 3 thinly sliced peppers with a whole onion. I. AM. NOT. KIDDING. They have live music I believe on Thursdays and Fridays. That’s a great addition!! They didn’t have that before. But!!! It’s only in the bar :/ and the bar is small but they try to fit in as many people possible in there. Is it because they added music, have a DJ that the food is low in quality? Is it because they decide that ambience is above what they were known for? GOOD FOOD? The food is still great don’t get me wrong. But just know that it is declining. But if you’re here with friends, celebrating an event for sure come!! But if you’re a long-time customer, you’re going to notice and find the differences that hinder their future success. TLDR: I've noticed that my favorite restaurant isn't as good as it used to be. They're skimping on ingredients, overloading on onions, and charging more. The food is still decent, but it's definitely declining in quality.
If you're looking for a quiet dinner... You may want to know that this place has a lot of birthday celebrations. Staff would go to the table with instruments and singing for those who were having birthday celebrations. It was a bit loud (personally for me) but normal probably for others but it was a bit annoying after the 3rd time , but we definitely weren't expecting it since it was our first time there. So if you have a birthday go for it, the celebration looks fun and you get a large sambro. Food wise, food was delicious, I would say I have had better from other smaller restaurants. The guacamole was 13.00 for the size in the photo. Freshly made and delicious. The plates sizes are filling and my food was hot and well made. Drinks were delicious, no complaints on those other than the pricing. Overall it was a $90 (, include tips) late brunch for two. Overall this location is great for celebrations for a fun experience.
Never been here before but wanted to try it. On a Saturday afternoon we found a table outside, no waiting, no reservation, very nice seating! Good margarita, made with house tequila, no frills menu . Enchiladas with beef and cheese were good, ground beef nachos were good but a soggy. Service is excellent. I had to come back to this review because as soon as we finished, my husband felt sick. We concluded that On the Border remains the better option.
I ate at the bar on a Tuesday night to mark a Taco Tuesday at a place with which I am familiar from prior enjoyable lunches. The bar area has a lively tone with the decor and noise level (some coming from music that could have been a touch lower for my preference). Service was quite prompt and quick to greet me and offer a drink of my choosing. The staff I saw had a pleasing energy level and seemed to be engaged and hustled throughout the evening. I ordered one of the appetizer ceviches from the special ceviche menu followed by an order of chicken oaxquennos tacos and a pork morsels entree sans rice ending with an order of fried ice cream (a bit of nostalgia from my student days). Proteins seem to be a strength if sauces may not be. The salsa accompanying the chips seemed quite thin to me. My appetizer was ready in less than five minutes. I am used to ceviche presented in a small glass cup, so this presentation was unique. The ingredients tasted fresh, especially the firm feeling seafood and the avocado. I liked the subtle sweetness of the sweet potato mousse and could have eaten more. The roasted corn kernels were a peculiar part of this dish to me, and the sauce seemed watery and too aggressively seasoned to go with delicate seafood. The staff attentively checked on my tacos twice which came out 20 minutes after I finished my appetizer. The tacos were portioned wonderfully and had good balanced flavor in each one with well cooked chicken and vegetables. Why I got rice and sour cream when I requested having neither when I ordered was puzzling. The next dish seemed to take another 20 minutes to arrive. The pork cubes have a slow cooked look and taste as advertised but why they are smothered in so much onions I do not know. The plate had some unappealing wateriness (not juiciness) at the bottom which could have resulted from trapping the hot pork under all the onions or something else I suppose. The vegetable garnish needs seasoning. The black beans and plantains tasted fine. Finally I received what I think was an order of cajeta instead of its cousin dessert fried ice cream. Being close enough to what I ordered I ate without complaint. The portions are reasonable and thankfully lack any greasy fried texture. The ice cream remains predictably cold and does not get drowned by too much caramel. The total cost for this meal amounted to about $70 including tax and excluding tip. All in all I think the value seems aligned with prices in the area for similar food. I likely would return with a bias towards lunch instead of dinner when the noise level is lower and the pace quieter than what I experienced on this evening visit.
I used to like coming here, but today I ordered takeout and there was a bandage in my food. I called and got my money back, but that should never happen. They should be using gloves. I don't think I can ever eat here again.
Dietary restrictions got blatantly ignored. Look, the food, the service and the environment was all amazing. Our hosts promptly seater us, and our server Oscar took care of us very nicely. However, there was a big issue. We do not eat pork, and we made it known to the server. He acknowledged it, and took time to help us choose. This is a religious dietary restriction we strictly follow. However, the food did contain pork (bacon wrapped shrimp) and we didn’t realize until we were halfway done eating, because we were so unfamiliar with it. After pointing it out, the server mentioned putting it in the ticket, so I guess it wasn’t communicated through to the kitchen or something. We had a nice time until that, and what we initially thought would be a new favorite left quite a bitter (read: bacon-y (not in a good way)) taste in my mouth. I’m sure you all will have a great experience, we just didn’t. Tropical ceviche was 10/10.
Some times you frequent a place a lot, like spend 10s of thousands of dollars at a restaurant. Then one day you have a problem with an employee and they treat you pretty bad. Then you speak to a Manager and they pretty much do nothing but make excuses. That folks is how great restaurants go down hill. Indifference toward one of their best customers. Tonight was my last visit to a Guapos restaurant and I will not be recommending them either. The ownership does not care about you one bit. Unfortunately I witnessed it first hand. I honestly still can’t believe it. There are tons of other Mexican restaurants in the area.
