10/10 just wonderful. I have been craving a chopped beef sandwich for weeks now. I’m from Fort Worth and I vacationed in Houston, I seen this place heading back to Fort Worth and I stopped by. I’m sooo happy I did. The sandwich was amazing, the staff were lovely. I highly recommend 🩷
I cannot brag enough about this place. The Cole's Special sandwich was great. I wasn't prepared for the messiness of chopped meat falling out. Will definitely plan to eat there vs. my car next time. The cookies I bought stayed soft into the next day. Next time I go through it will be the last place I stop and savour the small town flavor a little more.
Kohl's barbecue is a strange hole in the wall middle and nowhere barbecue place that everyone should try. The barbecue sauce is some of the best sweet barbecue sauce I've ever had in my life and I'm not normally a fan of sweet barbecue sauces. the wide variety of craft sodas in beers is astonishing and intriguing. The meat was well cooked and full of flavor. I got a biscuit sandwich and a craft soda for $14 which is not great but still not terrible in comparison to other barbecue places.
Don't let the fact that it's a gas station fool you. The charade is meant to weed out the guys who take forever to order and hold up the long line of those initiated in Texas BBQ. The moist brisket has the perfect texture, whether you order it at 11am or 2:30. The only way that's even possible is through wormhole technology. That's right, Cole's is clearly run by time travellers from the future who have returned to do the Lord's work by spreading the gospel of smoked protein. In the future, apparently, they've developed the technology to fit just as much cheese as pork into sausages... and how to cook them without exploding in a geyser of molten napalm death. From the bottom of my people's hearts, thank you, time travelling disciples of the smoky path. While the road may be long and narrow, it is lined with mesquite, pecan, oak, and hickory... we shall stumble along it together, meat-drunk and in the shade. Also a wonderful selection of artisan soda pop from across the US, and cheap gas.
I had myself a grilled cheese brisket sandwich, I though it would be a grilled cheese sandwich that would serve the purpose as a bun to perfectly place the delicious brisket, but it was just a brisket sandwich with the cheese slapped on it. Nevertheless, the sandwich was banging. It was a very old time set up and they had some killer seasonings with even better names in their miniature country store. Visit this place on your way to Dallas from Houston, or vice-versa.
Great place to stop between Houston and Dallas. The barbecue smells amazing as soon as you walk in the door. Lots of fun little spices and sodas in the shop as well. They also have a little alpaca enclosure out behind the store that’s really fun for kids to see. Worth visiting and remembering if you make the drive between Houston and Dallas often!
I ordered the two meat plate with sliced beef and pulled pork. The meet was tender and excellent. The fried okra was hot and fresh. The green beans were excellent and not too salty. I got cornbread with the meal. The cornbread muffins were good. It was a ton of food for $14. I will be stopping here again.
It's a humble place. Country style with their unique sauce brand, lol 😂🤣😂🤣. The food and prices were decent. Friendly stuff but that day nothing was according to the menu or plan. It was a nice experience but I would try another place the next time. Swing by if you wish.
Pretty good BBQ here... But my biggest compliment goes to the service here.. the lady that prepares the food & the young man that takes the payments are the most sweetest people.. such welcoming smiles & attitudes!!! You hardly get that anywhere anymore...
Our church ordered us Coles bbq and its a hidden gem,My burger and Husbands sliced brisket sandwich was some of the best food we’ve been treated too in so long.Bbq sauce is the best I’ve ever had.thank you too the two gentlemen working who recommended trying Cole sauce,my husband felt right at home when picking up.
The food is good here. I got the 2 meat plate 2 sides for $20. I got the mac & cheese, Coleslaw, ribs and spicy links (not that spicy btw) I gave it 4 stars because my ribs were a bit dry im sure on a different day they wouldn’t be. The Mac & cheese was okay could use some seasoning and the coleslaw was perfect. Customer service was top notch VERY friendly but it’s Texas so we’re known for our hospitality! Restrooms super clean restaurant/store clean only wish they had a sitting waiting area but I’ll live lol. Definitely give them a try! From 45 South take ext 198 :)
Wait, wait, wait. Listen Linda, let me splain! I know chopped brisket is sometimes frowned upon. Especially by those pit-masters who have worked exceedingly on their bark. I myself have taken someone to a top 5 place and cringed as they ordered chopped brisket. But on 45 between Dallas and Houston at exit 198 sits Cole's BBQ. Straight forward old school chopped brisket sandwich. Awesome place, some of the nicest, kind, and respectful people around. Nothing beats a two handed sandwich when you are trying to make a 4 hour trip in 3 1/2.
Cole’s BBQ, located in Fairfield, may not be a really well-known barbecue joint. Maybe it is because it is located in a very small town on the I-45 route between Houston and Dallas. Maybe it is because it is housed inside a Shell gas station on the east side of the road. Whatever the reason, it makes no difference to the quality of the smoked meats being produced day in and day out. I made a stop recently on a trip up to Dallas from Houston, and got there a few minutes before the restaurant counter opened at 10am. So I hung out for a few minutes wandering the store. That was great because I got a chance to talk with Kamry. She’s the pitmaster there. She was very friendly and kind, sharing some great information about their brand of barbecue. They use a couple Ole Hickory cabinet pits, and burn only mesquite. They put their briskets on the pit around 3pm each day, and then pull them around 9am the next morning. There is no wrapping for any of their meats. For their rubs they use only salt and pepper on the brisket. And for the other meats, to the salt-and-pepper base they add cayenne, garlic and a few other typical rub ingredients. Since it was morning, and I had a few other barbecue stops, I did not order a full meal. But I wanted to try both the brisket and the sausage. The brisket had a very nice flavor. The bark was a nice dark amber color. And there was a beautiful smoke ring. They offer three different sausages – a Polish sausage, a hot link and a jalapeño link. Since I’m a big jalapeño fan, I chose that one. The flavor was very good, and the casing had a good snap. But the grind was not my favorite. Even so, I’ll order it again next time I stop there. Cole’s offers three different barbecue sauces. They have their original sauce, which is a little sweet but very serviceable. The Lady Bird sauce has a bit of a hot sauce kick. And the Barbara Bush sauce is mustard-based. All three were nice companions to the already-tasty meat. While Kamry and I visited, she shared a couple things that were new to me – one about pork butts and the other about turkey breast. First, they brine each pork butt overnight before it goes on the pit. I’ve not heard of that before. She let me taste a sample of their turkey breast. Man was it good. I asked if she brined the turkey breast too and she said no, that the secret to their turkey is that they slather mayonnaise all over it and then sprinkle it with black pepper. I tell you what – next time I smoke a turkey breast, I am definitely going to try that, because that turkey was moist and absolutely delicious with a very nice mesquite-smoked flavor.
Nice spot. It's 4 super cute alpacas. U can sit at the picnic table and eat next to their cage. It's really cute. The food was extremely expensive. Cheapest item was Mac and cheese for $5.49 small. We bought a BBQ plate. It was delicious, hot and fresh. Great fresh cookies also. We stopped by on our way from the Texas Fair.
People where nice. The place had a nice bbq dive/Gas station feal to it. I ordered Briaket and Ribs. The brisket had been termed to high heaven and had no bark left on it anyware. It was moist but very chewy from being cut with the grain insted of across it. Overall it was not bad but not good eather. The ribs where rather good and the saving grace of this meal. They where moist and had a great smokey flavor. Would definatly eat them again. In total would stop for ribs but I'll avoid the brisket in the future.
Coles, what the heck happened to you?? Ate there five years ago and it was awesome. Ate there in Dec ‘25 & the place has really gone to the dogs. First of all, Miss V is awesome & serves a great meal, but I found the food quality had dropped quite a bit. Filthy eating area, food all over dining area floor, dirty tables, broken soda machine, ice tea had questionable “stuff” floating in both tea urns (with a very bad off taste) and the entire store area was in very bad disarray. Very sad to see a place that was once a great BBQ stop to be so unhealthy looking & poorly kept. I do not recommend eating there.
Located in an abandoned gas station. Not impressed with the atmosphere. Brisket was very fatty and expensive. Sauce was good and staff was friendly.
Was Once the Best BBQ in Central Texas. O purchased 4 brisket sandwiches it was so greasy it leaked thru the bag so Bad it damaged my upholstery. Smoky flavor was good but the salt level was way to high.
NASTY!!!! This used to be our favorite spot to stop every trip but I will NEVER be back after today. At least half of my chopped beef sandwich was large chunks of fat! If you do decide to purchase a chopped beef sandwich, watch the prep and inspect your sandwich before you leave. They had a nice pile of sliced brisket for "show" on the chopping board. What I got I wouldn't feed to my dog. I used to be able to get over how year after year they are even more run down than the last, but it just looks disgusting inside now. The service was awful, almost like we were an inconvenience to the young man who took my order and prepared our food. $24 for 2 fat filled sandwiches, definitely not worth it or the time it took to stop.
