Excellent food and great atmosphere, the owner of the business was super friendly. I truly recommend this place if you are craving South Asian food. ( I eat a brumanese rice noodles that were amazing.) Also great prices considering that the food it's high quality.
Good simple food. I have celiac disease and other allergies so my options are limited, but they will customize dishes for me. I love their chicken soup, fried chicken, pad Thai,
Asian Bowl's food is truly sublime!! Today we ordered four different typical Burmese dishes: Sechat Khauk Swal, Gin Thoke, and Lat Phat Thoke, Pa Zun Chin Thoke. Their distinct tastes are a feast for the senses. I can't believe this place has been under the radar. It's now on the hard fought list of my NYC best. And definitely my neighborhood's new favorite.
They look like a run-of-the-mill ambiguous Asian restaurant from the outside but don't be fooled! This is one of the few Burmese restaurants in the city. The fermented tea leaf salad (Lahpet Thoke) is an obvious winner with complex flavors and crunchy texture, but their curries are also flavorful and very different from Thai/Indian curries. An important destination for food lovers.
Small pan-Asian restaurant that is most special for it's Burmese menu, a rarity in NYC. I've tried many of the Burmese dishes and they're fantastic, with very different flavor and texture profiles; for the unfamiliar, many of the dishes are savory and boldly sour, variably spicy. Ask one of the friendly owners (who works the front of the house) for advice on what to order; his wife is the chef. Favorites include noodle salads (nan gyi thoke, a thote sone, & shan khauk swal thoke), noodle dishes (mohinga [fish soup] and kya-oh sechat [with or without soup], and salads (latphat thoke [famed fermented tea leaf salad, very intense flavors], gin thoke [ginger spicy], and pa zun chin thoke [sour shrimp]). There are also some Burmese curries and fried vegetables. Well worth trying with an open mind.
The food was very delicious. Customer service was great. I am glad I got to explore A Burmese restaurants . Will return to try some unique salads .
cozy hole in the wall with absurdly good food, like — will go back repeatedly and bring new friends every time — good. love the mohinga fish soup, the garden rice, the lunch and dinner combos, the coconut noodles, tea leaf salad, the list goes on.
If you aren't ordering from their Burmese menu you are missing out. Owner is very friendly and would love to recommend dishes if you are not familiar with the cuisine
I don’t know why I crave your food on every Monday!!!😭😭😭 this is the best Burmese food you can get in town! The price is good, service is good, the owner is friendly and nice! I love their boo thi Kyaw (a Kyaw sone) and Nan gyi thot! Give it a try and you won’t regret!
Small place with amazing food. Every time I come here with my partner we enjoy the food. Service is very good too. Seems like staff doesn’t change so it’s always a great experience. Highly recommend this place
As someone with celiac disease, it’s usually very difficult to find good gluten free Asian dishes. Asian Bowl is my go-to! The staff is always very friendly and remembers me when I call or pop in. The gluten free General Tso’s and GF fried rice is the best I’ve ever had!
This place is PHENOMENAL. Upon discovery of Asian Bowl, I officially consider Forest Hills as an Ethnic (Burmese specifically, but whatever) food heaven!! I don't even wish that I lived closer to Jackson Heights anymore, because Asian Bowl is just better. I truly hope it survives through this monstrous pandemic and continue to serve our community. Please come support the business. Peace & Love
Delicious Burmese food! Really enjoyed the ginger salad, rice noodle dishes. The curry beef and chicken was lovely as well. Will be ordering again....
Delicious and authentic! I’m Burmese and some of theses dishes taste like childhood. Really delicious food at very reasonable prices. Highly recommend! It is right by a subway station.
This place was the first place I found within 50 mile radius of NYC that has burmese food. And its amazing. Their crunchy salads are tdf. And it wicked cheap and still that good.
The best hot and sour soup (vegan) The box lunches and dinners are a great value. My favorite is the vegan General Tao mock chicken. It is a godsend there is a healthy asian with vegan options other than spring roll and edamame on the menu and so close to home.
Curry Chicken dish was fine. Prepared mildly spiced; perfect for my taste. More than enough pieces of chicken on the bone, with eggplant, bok choy, broccoli; served with white rice. Friendly service.
Get the Burmese food. Low key place with amazing hard to find authentic Burmese. Coconut chicken soup was amazing and so was the gin thoke salad
The uncle was so nice The food was so good and I love that it’s authentic burmese food!! I went there with my friends and even my korean friend enjoyed the food as well. Highly recommend asone tote, coconut noodle and mote hin garr!!
Great food selection, they also have group meals if you will visit in groups. I had a great overall experience when I visited, the place is very clean and the food really tasted fresh. Quick and efficient service and the pricing is decent. I would highly recommend!
Love this place! My aunt made the best Burmese food when I was growing up and the food from Asian Bowl is definitely a runner up. Dishes are homemade and delicious. Great service too!
Great Burmese/Asian food spot. I always saw it from a distance, but it took me forever to finally go. I knew it was going to be good because of how long it's been there and the reviews. Delicious food for reasonable prices. I've been to Myanmar, so I kind of knew what to expect. I enjoyed the food very much, and the waiter/cashier was super friendly.
My first exposure to Burmese food. I was really excited to try and learn about it. I enjoyed the suggestion from the staff. I'm also vegetarian. I was leaning towards one option, but he highly suggested someone else (the photo I posted and pointing to) and I went with his option. Glad I did. Twas amazing. Something I learned about the cuisine, is that food necessarily won't be piping hot. It's intentional.
We had a 14-person family dinner at Asian Bowl on Christmas Eve and it was fantastic! The place was small and cozy, meaning we had it to ourselves besides the people picking up takeout. There is a variety of dietary preferences in our family (vegan, gluten free, omnivorous) and the menu was accommodating to everyone. The service was prompt, friendly, and patient with us.
The Burmese cuisine is so unique. The owner is delightful and helps navigate the menu. The food is OUTSTANDING. Vegetables cooked perfectly (not over cooked.) you can get delivery or eat in comfortably. When they post pictures and descriptions online, it will be easy to order from home. But we’re happy to dine in. Very comfortable and casual. This is a MUST try place. We will strongly encourage our friends to try it.
LOVE LOVE LOVE this restaurant!! I would give it 10 stars if I could. This is our go to restaurant to take food out from when we visit our daughter in Manhattan. The owner is so very sweet and always is incredibly welcoming. It's so difficult to find Burmese food and Asian Bowl is the best Burmese food we have ever eaten. We always get the Ohnoh Kawt Swe Soup, the mixed vegetable curry, A Thote Sone, Burmese mai fun with shrimp, the 2 types of tea leaf salad, and khauk swal kyaw which is a Burmese noodle dish. The dishes are always prepared fresh and everything is piping hot and beyond delicious. It's such a treat for our family. The whole experience is made even more enjoyable by the owner being so very friendly and kind. Keep up the GREAT work Asian Bowl! We are true fans!!
This is truly a neighborhood gem! It's an Asian fusion restaurant that also offers a bunch of Burmese dishes which is a rarity in NY. The place is a little small but the service is great and the food is amazing. It used to be a regular Chinese restaurant with the same name that was taken over by new management. Unfortunately, they also inherited the old reviews and ratings. The new place is definitely a big improvement and I'd recommend everyone to check it out!
Surprised that I haven't reviewed it yet. It's all about the Burmese food options. In taste I personally prefer their fish or shrimp curry, always hits the spot for me. Steamed dumplings are delish! All their Khao offerings are the main event and definitely worth a try until you settle on your fave. The owner will greet you with a smile and phenomenal service. Dare I say the best Burmese in NYC!!
My first time ordering was great! I’m so glad they have vegan options ! The broccoli with vegetarian chicken was DELICIOUS and had lots of garlic which I LOVE. I also got a tasty seaweed salad. I messed up my address by accident ... SORRY... but they called me and were able to sort it out without any real issues. My delivery guy laughed about it (sorry again!!!!) Will definitely be ordering from here again. I want to try all their vegetarian options 😋
Lived in Myanmar for 2 years. This restaurant has very AUTHENTIC Burmese food with a wide variety! Burmese food is difficult to find and this place serves the best. Tea is great, curry is great. Other south East and East Asian food is also available. Try this place out!
I was years since my original review, below. Since then I have been back alone, with my wife, with wife and kids, and with wife and in-laws, multiples of times. We have NEVER had less than a great meal. Asian Bowl is small, but comfortable. It's family run, and I give the service 5 because across all visits- whether just before closing, with a surprise group of 6 guest- the service is NOT fancy, but it is always happy, friendly, personal and direct. Asian Bowl has built a following and it is a small place- don't provide a huge crush! It has been way too hard to get Burmese food in NYC, for way too long. The pandemic may have killed off a few contenders hoping to start up or expand- but it has been a well-used opportunity for Asian Bowl to shift from their original pan-asian menu with a few Burmese items into mainly Burmese offerings. They are very well-prepared and delicious offerings. As well, the owners chose to expand what had been a common single table walk-in, pickup, and leave storefront- into a non-fancy (but I do like the ceiling) comfortable place to sit and eat some lovely meals in the company of other pleased-looking diners. The service is friendly and quick, and the dishes are delicious. Americans often find out about Burmese food by ordering Ono Kyauk Swe- a turmeric golden chicken coconut milk onion and shallot based soupish-stew, and Asian Bowl's is very savory. Be sure to add in the amount of lime and cilantro you want from its' condiments. Burmese recipes toy with combining the senses, and the sour shrimpy salty soft-greens and bamboo Chin Baung Kyauk is one of our favorites. Beware that Asian Bowl is not shy about serving spicy dishes. Many Burmese dishes are intended to be hot, and Asian Bowl respects that.
Wow just wow. This is the first time I ever have Burmese food and I'm glad it was here. I ordered the nan thy thote and it's number one on the list of the menu for a reason folks. The amount of flavor it had it was un real seriously fireworks in my mouth. I will be coming back again to try the rest of the menu
Excellent Burmese food in Forest Hills! If you’ve never had Burmese food before the owner is super friendly and is always happy to guide you to dishes you’ll like. Burmese food is hard to find in NYC, and this is a real neighborhood gem.
Incredible incredible flavors and quality. I've only had their Burmese dishes, and it's become my new favorite cuisine. I feel so lucky to have this neighborhood spot I recommend to everyone
there are so few burmese restaurants in new york and i’m so glad i found this spot! the food was delicious and flavorful (as burmese food should be!), the prices are great and the owner was very sweet and attentive. definitely worth the trip if you’re coming from manhattan or the bronx.
Had ohn no kaut swal and it was so good!
Very authentic and great food!
excellent service, amazing food. they really care about the quality and authenticity. i come here often enough.
The food was delicious, and the delivery was really fast. This is one of my favorite restaurants in the city!
very happy I found this place, great food and they are kind and thoughtful there. I like the curry combo special.
Don't let the name fool you - this is not your typical chowmein place, you get the best Burmese in the city here at a reasonable price.
This place introduced me to Burmese food and I love it! great food, great service! We’ve always had a great experience. Feels like comfort food!
The best service is from the owner himself. Always friendly and kind. I love their gluten free food options.
This restaurant is worth the trip. The staff are helpful and the place is spotless. The menu is varied with many elements of Burmese food. We had three dishes and all were savory and interesting. Don’t miss the tea leaf salad.
Very authentic place for solid Burmese food. Had delivery first and the lunch box blew me away. The soup that came with the rice is the best. Next went in person to get some a thoke sone and chin Naung kyaw. Everything is 10/10. Service is amazing too. The free green tea they gave pairs so well with all the food.
This is a little traditional Asian fusion restaurant. The food is cooked as an incredible home made style. we can feel the love and care they’re bringing to our neighborhood. The Gluten Free options are wide with an specific section dedicated for those who have the GF Allergy. Is so delicious and we love it ❣️
It’s a great place to try Burmese food. The owner, Mr. John is a very sweet person and popular in the area, and rightly so. The food feels like home-cooked meal. Highly recommend!
Since starting a gluten free diet, eating out has become challenging. I found Asian Bowl thru an extensive search for gluten free food as the Richmond Hill area of queen's doesn't have that many options. Asian bowl is located in Forest Hills but not to far from me. Their food is consistently amazing and their customer service is consistently amazing. Their space is a bit small but its so worth it. They have many gluten free options and we will definitely keep going back.
I experienced all the positive aspects others have mentioned. I always leave this restaurant satisfied. The staff shows both ability and warmth. I tasted ingredients I'd never had in this quality food. This place fulfills every dining need.
Their lunch special is amazing, generous portions at a really great price. In today’s economy, it’s so important to support small local restaurants like this that run an honest business and serve delicious food. I’ll definitely be coming back, not just for lunch but for dinner too!
I went in yesterday for dinner and I was not expecting to enjoy my meal at all. The food was only for me but my children tried it instead of their food from a nearby restaurant and they loved it. Wow, it was amazing in taste and presentation. Thank you for a wonderful dinner. See you soon.
We've been coming here whenever we're too lazy to cook for 2 years now. The food is delicious, and plenty of Burmese people enjoy eating here, too. They have Burmese style chinese food, like beef chow fun and sweet and sour chicken. It's different but still tasty. Staff here is also very friendly and attentive.
Went with a friend on a Sunday afternoon because we’ve never tried Burmese food before and kept seeing videos online, including one mentioning Asian Bowl. We heard about the fermented tea leaf salad (#37 Latphat Thoke, on right) that’s a must try and also the noodle salad (#34 Shan Khauk Swal Thoke, on left) that they make with rice noodles. We also were interested in the fish noodle soup (#11 Mohinga, top and bottom) which sounded really good. One of the owners serving the front of house was very friendly and patient while we ordered. There was another pair of diners at the table next to us and they seemed to be regulars who came specifically for the Mohinga and the owner was chatting with them too. There was a reasonable wait time and the food arrived nicely plated The components of the Mohinga were on a separate plate from the soup base to prevent them from getting mushy. Some of them were crunchy so that was a conscientious decision on their part. Also my friend who doesn’t like cilantro was happy to see that they didn’t mix it in, so you can separate things if you wanted to. For a warm spring afternoon, the room temperature nature of the Latphat Thoke and Shan Khauk Swal Thoke was very refreshing The taste of the food was really what made me want to write a review! As soon as I mixed the Mohinga and served some in my bowl, I took one bite and said oh my god it’s so good 😭😭😭 It was on the thicker side and so umami. Not fishy tasting at all. I tried the tea leaf salad next and the flavors were incredible 😭 Savory, tangy, a little spicy, just really full of flavor and well rounded. They weren’t kidding about the different crunches too, which included peanuts, cashews, broad beans, and I think moong dal as well. There were some Thai chilies on the side but if you don’t want spice you can just remove them The noodle salad was once again delicious too. Loved the peanuts and sesame and pickled greens and bean sprouts. Honestly it was even better when you mixed in the tea leaf salad. Not one aspect was overpowering and I feel like it was a very harmonious experience flavor wise and texturally. I think I told the owner how good I thought everything was at least 3 times. And my friend had to listen to me rave about it for the whole meal too. But she also shared the same opinions 😂 There are some foods you try once and then can’t stop thinking about them. For me this is definitely one of them and I absolutely have to come back and try the Gin Thoke (ginger salad) and whatever else they recommend. Portions are generous, prices are reasonable, and the location is accessible. Burmese food really is a treat and if anyone reading this hasn’t tried it, please do!
The food was delicious. We ordered vegetarian beef chow fun. The food was fresh and not greasy or left a lingering aftertaste. I was so satisfied after eating the meal. We all had the same dish and everyone agreed that it was the best chow fun ever. Update: we ordered again and truly enjoyed our meal. Update: I went to pickup the food myself this time. Warm friendly staff. They introduced me a chickpea cracker that they make fresh. It was delicious. Not on the menu yet.
This is a neighborhood treasure. Asian bowl delivers great Asian cuisines (Chinese, Japanese, and Korean) cooked healthily. You can taste the actual flavors not salt or oil or sugary sauce. It’s well worth to eat in, get take out, or order delivery.
At last! Authentic Burmese food in NYC! Hope more folks go to this tiny place but most folks seemed to come in for "take out". The fermented tea salad was just ok compared to the one Burma Superstar restaurant in SF.
Great food and service. The pad thai is some of best. Last time I tried the chicken fried dumplings. They were so good, not oily at all. I highly recommend.
LOVE THIS PLACE. The amount of vegan options here, in FH?? I was hooked, the fake meats are NOT easy to find and they can put them in almost any dish on the menu. I've tried a few dishes here and loved them. I wouldn't hesitate to come again. The service is great and a pleasure to eat in, pick up or get delivered. When I'm eating I try and think of the next opportunity I'll have to order from here.
Good food, surprise of a gem in heart of forest hills. Was not so well know but recent review in new york times and an article in edible queens has the owner smiling to the bank! He was very friendly and proud to present their offerings. We went at an IDD time of 330 and another time at 5pm, both times we were greeted and served with a smile Food was excellent-we had the fish curry My mother who is from Calcutta said it took her back to her childhood ! It was very similar to how they made fish in their ancestral home We also had the chicken curry-it tasted exactly the same as fish-both preparations didn’t have ankit of sauce though, lot if oil but tasted heavenly Next time I will try fish stew ! Probably the only Burmese restaurant in town, not to be missed
Asian Bowl features a large menu full of Burmese and Chinese dishes, but it's the Burmese items that stand out. I placed an order for delivery through Yelp: Asian Bowl hot wings, pa zun chin thoke, and the curry combo box with chicken and beef. The food arrived in 40 minutes (it was an ASAP order), about 20 minutes earlier than the Yelp estimate. The wings were not spicy. They were glazed with a sweet-tasting sauce, probably hoisin. The Yelp menu didn't have any ingredients or descriptions, but some research shows that the pa zun chin thoke is a fermented shrimp salad: diced shrimp, parsley, red onions, garlic, peppers, and other ingredients I couldn't identify. The shrimp has a firm texture but isn't chewy. The peppers were about as spicy as jalapenos, though I don't know what type of peppers they were. Overall, the salad was sour and spicy. The curry box came with crushed pepper flakes on the side (possibly Chinese red peppers). Chicken: bone-in. The vegetable curry had parsley, daikon, and lentils. The food was pretty good, but it's hard to tell what you're going to get.
Wanted to try a new restaurant. No regrets! Really healthy food! Great service. The only thing I would’ve liked is a bit more meat in my combo box entree (Sesame chicken). The protein rice came in clutch it was so filling. Other than that, I’ve been looking for something like this. Satisfying and Healthy. This definitely hits the spot. Maybe I’m gonna be more adventurous and try the something else next time.
Before getting in depth with my review, I only came to try the Burmese dishes. Growing up eating home cooked Burmese food, I wanted to see how close to home the food was. So of course, there aren’t many well-known Burmese dishes so it’s a fusion of Thai and Chinese food as well. You can see that on the menu. Each dish came in large portions that can be shared. I got the mohinga (Burmese fish noodle soup), kyay oh, and latphat thote. The latphat thote comes spicy but it didn’t taste spicy to me. Maybe because I grew up eating it. So just keep that in mind when ordering. The mohinga was delicious. A little sweet. I don’t remember the dish being sweet, but it wasn’t overbearing - just a hint of it. The kyay oh with flat noodle was a good balance of noodles and vegetables. They didn’t put too much of one thing and didn’t skimp out. I would love to try the ohnoh kawt swe (coconut noodles soup) since that was a staple in my house as well, but too much food so next time. The pricing is affordable and service was ok. I guess the host/waiter is used to the locals more? During checkout, there are small bins of some of the food items they sell so you can make it at home. Some things I saw were the fermented tea leaves for the latphat, the crispy split chickpeas in mohinga and ohnoh kawt sue, and malachan. If you’re looking for south East Asian cuisine, go check it out.
it's an aight experience. if you want to try some Burmese food, it's kind of like a takeout and it's a very vegetarian. i got two latphat thokes, one gin thoke, one cocacola but they forgot the coca cola!! kinda tight about that
Unfortunately, recently, the quality of the food, as well as the portion size, has been deteriorating. My friend ordered non-spicy chicken but received a spicy one with only half of the expected portion. It wasn't like that before. It's a pity.
This was 5 stars and it took away 3! I used to LOVE this place!!!! They had unbeatable vegetarian Chinese food optionsfron general tso to Korean chicken, sesame chicken-ALL VEGETARIAN AND DELICIOUS! Now they are under new management and all of those wonderful options are GONE! They’ve been replaced by sushi which i cannot eat. I really wish the new management would consider bringing back all of the vegetarian friendly options because there is nothing like it in this neighborhood at all.
I would not recommend the pad Thai. I ordered it and received plain noodles (pictured) and assumed they somehow forgot to add sauce. When I called to ask, they told me pad Thai does not come with sauce. There is some flavor, but not like I receive any time I get pad Thai anywhere else. Also, I ordered the lunch combo box and did not get any of the sides advertised (edamame, spring roll, dumpling).
I have been ordering for a while now from here. They look clean but their staff seems sick all the time . I was very dissatisfied and upset with their preparation. First of they they delivered half of my order and when they brought the other half , Thai shrimp fried rice , it was horrible . Never have I been cheated like this . Plain white rice dry , no shrimps , some uncooked mushrooms ( yuk) . I have a heart condition and my son and had a serious stomach upset . Thirty plus worth of food (2 dishes ) What a cut throat ! I think this was unfair .Watch out!
Water down soup and chicken broccoli. Idk if it’s cause I came last minute, but I m not from the area and it closes at 9pm. First time Burmese food… yuck. Should’ve gotten Chinese.
Horrible place. Ordered ped thai, doesn't say its spicy anywhere, it was extremely spicy and the guy tried to convince me that's how pad thai suppose to taste. Yes, explain that to my kid that is used to normal pad thai. Additionally, he said it says spicy on the menu. This happened just now.
For anyone that ate the food here from back in the earlier 2000's, don't bother going back. It changed hands and the food is nowhere near as good anymore. So sad, this used to be the best place in Forest Hills for NY style Chinese food....
Very slow service and the front lady she thinks she is over smart I think I never suggested this place
The person who answers the phone for orders is extremely rude. His manner of speaking to customers is very unpleasant. On top of that, he has no patience at all. He is a Burmese man. While the food is good, I believe it’s very important to speak to people politely and take orders correctly.
I ate Mohinga and Akyaw Sone from this restaurant last night, and by the morning I experienced severe stomach upset, including watery diarrhea.
So bad taste after Covid. It can’t even call Mala. When I visited this place before Covid, Mohinga soup was the best but not right now. They use fried tofu every Salad and even Mala but it can’t eat coz it’s hard as a rock. You should try another Burmese restaurant, it’s called ‘ Burmese Bites’ at Queen’s Mall.
