Go here!!! The food was phenomenal and the staff were all so friendly. Hands down one of the best meals I’ve had in a while - fresh, healthy, good portions, and the tortillas are made in house 🤤

Really good food. Fresh, local (except for my son's corn dog) and fast. Great guacamole and their habanero sauce is killer and is made/packaged on site

I recently visited Cafe Capistrano and was blown away by the quality of the food and the exceptional service. While the restaurant is not fully vegan, they do have a great selection of vegan options that are just as delicious as their non-vegan offerings. We ordered the veggie fajitas and veggie burrito and both dishes were absolutely fantastic. The vegetables were fresh and perfectly cooked, and the flavors were well balanced and delicious. But what really stood out to us was the outstanding service we received from our male server. He was incredibly welcoming, friendly, and professional, and went above and beyond to ensure we had a great experience. Even though this was a takeout order, he took the time to chat with us and offer suggestions on where to visit in the area. He even reminded us to order a drink to go when we had forgotten! Overall, I cannot recommend Cafe Capistrano enough. The food is amazing, and the service is truly exceptional. If you're looking for delicious vegan options in the area, this restaurant should be at the top of your list!

After a lovely day on the coast, we stopped at Cafe Capistrano for an early dinner and what an excellent decision! We had the cochinita quesadilla and chicken adobo plate and both were just fabulous. They know how to do pork here! If you're a hot sauce fan, don't miss their in-house Xni Pec recipe, which you can also buy to bring home—which we did! If we're ever back in Half Moon Bay, we will definitely be returning.

Having Celiac with Allergies to Wheat, rye, soy, barley, Love that it’s always safe for me to eat here and with so many dishes to choose from that do not contain soy and gluten . I love this place it’s so good and healthy it is my #1 favorite place to go on the pacific coast. Beautiful atmosphere really authentic Mayan dishes and absolutely fresh and delicious. Love the Owners and crew and the fact that it’s a family ran business with all the comforts and feeling like home only but better with five star food by a talented borne chief of a family of chiefs in my opinion , really amazing food.

This hidden gem in Half Moon Bay is fantastic! Very warm and friendly staff, delicious food with generous portions and a very spicy in-house bottled hot sauce. Patio seating as well as inside. Mayan cuisine was just incredible. Can't wait to go back!

Great tasting food right off the main restaurant strip that is definitely worth a try!! They have a Michelin Star (more than one?) and they definitely earned it - the food is cooked to perfection, really fresh, and tasted amazing! Definitely a great place to relax after spending time on one of Half Moon's beaches enjoying the sun. You've got to at least try one of the dishes on the first page of the menu, the ones we tried were absolutely delicious and definitely worth the trip. The only area they could improve is the waters; the lime slice was plopped sadly in the middle, not on the rim which could've added just a bit more finesse. The place feels like a home (pretty sure it was a home at some point?) and the staff treats you like family. Would definitely visit again!

Lovely place, run by locals. Feels like you are invited to grandma’s house for authentic Mexican food. The food was fantastic and the entire atmosphere is charming and very unique. Can’t find places like that often.

Great food, good service, and nice ambiance. We brought our dogs with us and they were nice about it. Prices were reasonable and the portions were large. Good chips and salsa which they replenished many times. Thank you! Bathroom was clean. Good amount of outdoor seating. Easy parking situation.

Lovely establishment, must be family owned. Our new favorite for sit down Mexican restaurant. The older gentleman who is always there really completes the scene.

Wow, every time I go here I am amazed at the freshness and flavor. None of the adjacent eateries hold a candle to the freshly fried tortilla chips and perfectly seasoned seafood! Very inviting energy too- my two young daughters were welcomed and happy… highly recommend if you’re in the mood for healthy, bright cuisine!

What makes this 5 Stars is the Value. Almost gourmet dishes if you know what to order, but tre reasonable prices A hidden gem

The food here is fantastic! We usually get something from the selection under specials.... my husband lives everything chorizo here.

C
Charly W. Hallahan

Wow! Fish taco here is top notch; juicy, well seasoned, and really perfectly executed. Nothing fancy but solid. One of the best fish tacos we’ve found living in California for 15 years. The flan is also excellent. Service was honestly a bit lackluster... but hey, we came for the tacos so it’s excused

S

Good every time I come visit. Delicious panuchos. Make sure to switch for the other meat options. Cozy vibes in a converted house with a ramp for accessibility.

Great place a bit out of the way of downtown, delicious Mexican and south American food, fresh and reasonably priced. The empandas were great, so were the fish tacos. Plenty of parking, note they only accept cash. Outside dining is on plastic tables and chairs just to set expectations.

Don’t judge this book by its cover. Located in an older home just off Kelly, this Mayan cuisine hit the spot! I knew I would be hiking in the area and found this place, deciding I would go with the Pork Adobo Burrito and it delivered! The meat was sooooo sooo flavorful. Service was good, small patio out back. The food was ready very quickly.

Outstanding Red Snapper fish taco plate. Friendly service and cute atmosphere.

E
Edurne Gonzalez

Food was amazing! We ate the entire thing because it was so delicious! The restaurant is in what looks to be a home and so it is small and quaint which may not suit everyone's idea of dining but we liked the cozy feel to it. From the reviews complaining about the waiter we were a bit cautious, but he was very respectful and kind. He's not that bubbly in your face customer service kind of waiter and that suits us just fine. We even gave him an extra tip for explaining the sauces to my father. Overall we had a really great experience with delicious food and kind and attentive staff and service. We will definitely be back

Hidden gem! A little bit off of the Half Moon Bay downtown area, we found Café Capistrano in a quaint old house. The team prepares delicious Mayan cuisine. This is as authentic as it gets.

This hidden gem...My family had the best experience at Cafe Capistrano! The service was so good. We sat on the patio of a home that had been converted to this restaurant. The Ordering was easy and they had no problem making 3 orders completely VEGAN. All of the Mayan items tasted great. So good, I will fly back to eat here again!

E

Fantastic, authentic food in an adorable and quaint setting. The panuchos were fresh and delicious, especially with their homemade habanero hot sauce added!

This place feels like eating in your own home. Very amazing authentic Mexican Mayan cuisine. A must stop when passing by the coast.

T

In a town with a dozen Mexican restaurants how do you distinguish yourself? It's Mayan, which means more braised meats, and lighter iterations with lots of colorfully flavorful toppings.

A

Incredibly delicious and authentic food in Half Moon Bay! The food was so fresh and flavorful, highly recommend. Also they have a house made habanero sauce- definitely try it.

J

Love it! Excellent fresh snapper. If you think the bottled sauce isn't hot enough, ask for the chef's private sauce! 🔥

My dining partner and I were so excited to find Yucatan Mayan food in this quiet town that we spent forever looking at the menu, but the server (and co-owner, I believe) was very patient with us. We ordered panuchos, cochinita pibil and chicken adobo and enjoyed hearing to the chef sing his commentary in the kitchen (one highlight: “Now it’s a panucheria in here!”) Everything was delicious, but the cochinita was definitely the standout — the slow-cooked flavor was frankly mind-altering, especially with the curtido and mango salsa. Eating out on the patio was great — it felt like being invited into someone’s home, and there was enough space and ventilation to feel safe. Before we left we had to buy two bottles of the zesty homemade hot sauce. Definitely a highlight of Half Moon Bay!

K
Kim Flores

A group of us with dogs came by and ate in the outdoor patio. We had great service. They even bought out bowls of water for the dogs. Everyone ordered something different, and everyone loved their choice. I had the breakfast quesadilla with chorizo. The portion were large and the prices were reasonable. The group agreed we would definitely go back when in Half Moon Bay.

L
Luis Argote

Revisited after several years and this place is as delicious as ever. The Poc Chuc Panuchos were particularly good and would broadly recommend them. Definitely the best Yucatan food I've had in the Bay Area. I will try to make my way here more often.

Totally authentic Mayan cuisine in half moon bay.... Who knew? This place is great... Good sangria too. It's in a funky old house, each room has a few tables. There's a neat patio in the backyard.

Didn’t know what to expect and was very pleased. I had the fish tacos that were recommended by the server and they were amazing I never had them so fresh see attached pictures. The hot sauce was perfect very flavorful and not over powering the taste of the meal

The food is amazing! Homemade for all the visitors. I managed to get gluten-free and Dairy-free breakfast. We ordered fajitas and fish tacos (soft). 3-4 tables for outside sitting, and we came with our dog. A very pleasant atmosphere and service.

We’ve been coming here for years. This is the perfect place to go to after going to the beach. It’s dog friendly and has amazing food. Their Panuchos and Chicken Adobo are 🔥. You can never go wrong eating here.

We wanted Mexican and seafood, and we found this Mayan restaurant! I don't think I've ever had Mayan cuisine before but it was very good. The nachos were yummy and I highly recommend the fish tacos. We got nachos, fish tacos, cochinita pibil, cochinita burrito, and garlic prawns. Everything was fresh and delicious. The fruits and veggies were a great combo and I liked making my own mini tacos. Everyone was full and happy - great portions!

M
Matt Strain

Best fish tacos in the Bay Area. I like fish tacos. I eat a lot of fish tacos. These are the freshest, tastiest fish tacos I’ve had the pleasure of putting in my mouth. The other dishes we ordered were equally tasty. The waiter was a delight. Entertaining and personable. The casual, in-home setting made it so much more enjoyable than a big restaurant. This will be the go-to meeting place for when coming down from the north bay to meet friends coming up from Santa Cruz.

J
Jule

Large portions and delicious food! My girl and I enjoyed it and such a friendly atmosphere. Also love that hot sauce!

My husband and I were looking for a quick, gluten free dinner by the beach and I’m so happy we stumbled upon this lovely establishment. We shared a shrimp taco plate which I was delighted to see had a variety of vegetables. The guac was particularly fresh and tasty. Honestly, I couldn’t find anything wrong with the entire dish. Everything tasted fresh and delicious. The establishment seems home-like. I felt as though I was at a friends house and their family member was cooking a special meal for me. Tables are close together but we didn’t mind. I believe our server was the owner and service was fantastic. We showed up 40 minutes before they closed and ate so quickly we left after 30 minutes. Also, get the sangria if you like red wine and pineapple!

S

This place is like being welcomed into a friend's home with cariño. We had a delicious meal the other night. I loved the fish tacos (the red snapper was terrific) and my companions all really enjoyed their meals with either chicken or steak. The service was so kind and let us enjoy our meal at a comfortable pace, without rushing us out the door. A true gem of a restaurant and I can't wait to go back.

2nd time here and it still doesn’t disappoint! It’s totally unlike your typical very Americanized Mexican food. Had the most colorful and scrumptious appetizer to share and each of us ordered pork, steak and chicken dish separately. Amazingly each grill meat tastes aromatically different. The lady server was very friendly and we even went back to the kitchen to discuss with the also very friendly Mayan chef. He showed us the sauce used to marinate and cooked the grilled chicken with. We left satisfied to our taste buds and not feeling too heavy or too rich. Besides, the dishes are so vividly colorful with all natural ingredients! This place is worth coming back again and again.

I almost didn’t go because I don’t *love* Mexican food in America but I saw reviews that said food is rly fresh and loved the variety of things I saw on plates so i went. Those reviews are 100% correct. Well seasoned, fresh ingredients FRESHLY prepared, and perfection portioned and served. Very friendly service, unassuming interior, very charming and unique atmosphere. Great for dinner for 1 or with lots of fam/friends. Server walked by to see if I liked the food, and all I could say was “this food is literally amazing” and I made eye contact with the chef!!! Highly highly highly recommend when in HMB.

Finally tried this place for brunch and it was fantastic. The food is so fresh, with great flavors and huge portions. The space is a bit cramped and loud when it’s full, but that it feels homey and shouldn’t stop anyone from going. Looking forward to trying the dinner menu.

We’re locals and we brought a visiting relative to Cafe Capistrano for dinner and it was a great experience. We had the Poc Chuc pork dish, the chicken enchiladas, and vegetarian quesadillas. It’s open for breakfast, lunch & dinner, and just 2 blocks off Main Street.

We absolutely loved this restaurant. Our food was exquisitely prepared and presented on the plate was the artistic precision of an impressionist painting. Service was quick and accurate. The converted house made for private dining areas decorated with artwork which reflected the Mexican vibe. Would absolutely return here if I'm in the area again.

In our third and last visit in Half Moon Bay we come across this little cafe - that seems to be a simple family home from the outside - and we couldn’t hope for a better finding. This mayan-mexican food is just great. We took nachos - they were still hot - with guacamole, a burrito and an enchilada dish. Everything was fresh and tasty. Other things: traditional and cool location (the bathroom too), very chill waiter, good prices. Just go!

Quaint little place with excellent food! We showed up past the breakfast hours, and when asked if chef can still make huevos ranchers, he said "come during breakfast!" Wow! We got off the main road in Half Moon Bay and found Cafe Capristrano in a quiet neighborhood on October 4, 2025. Don’t be fooled by the small older home-turned-quaint-casual restaurant. We were utterly blown away by the food. Best homemade chunky guacamole. The Mayan style chicken adobo was moist and tender. The garlic prawns were cooked to perfection. The cheese enchiladas with Yucatán style sauce were to die for. The Cochinita Pibil (pork slowed cooked in banana leaves) was tender and moist. Many of the dishes are served with generous and delicious portions of black beans, fresh salsa, fruit salsa, guacamole, rice, and Mayan coleslaw. The staff is friendly and make you feel right at home. We can’t wait to go back to try their other selections.

Awesome little place. Friendly service. Everyone in our party of seven had food they enjoyed. The Mexican chowder is tasty and tomato based. My hubby enjoyed the trio of Mexican appetizers with two tacos and empanada. My cousin ordered best with something that looked like pulled pork but was off the Mexican part of the menu. Fries there are nice quality, not soggy. Recovering from the flu, I ordered less adventurous grilled cheese with fresh avocado and grilled tomatoes. My coleslaw was lemon instead of mayo which was nice change. Big portions. Side patio which looks good for less windy weather. We sat inside and tables are close together.

Excellent soup “Mexican Chowder” with shrimp. It was delicious, though a bit expensive for a bowl of soup.

Foods good. It's really busy after school. Service is slow and pretty casual ordering process. Not a typical site down cafe. I think you order at the counter and sit down.

Came early on a Saturday morning for breakfast and was not disappointed! Great service, wonderful Mayan food and was even treated to vegetables straight out of the garden.

This place was good with a sunny atmosphere and great service, but the food was not super memorable. I had the Panuchos and others in the group had chincinita, eggs Yucatán style, and poc Chuk. Overall, the breakfast looked the best (served until noon)

Authentic experience, feel like granma cooking for me, although I never had mayan grandma, but I would imagine her cooking to be like this had I have one. The beef quesadilla was really good. I felt the soup was only alright.

Four of us had dinner. We were seated immediately. While the specialty is Yucatán and myan food, the menu offers a diverse selection of Mexican options. We stuck to the myan options for our order. The food came quickly and the presentation was excellent. All four of us enjoyed the meal. The great flavor contrasts and clean taste elevate this better than most Mexican restaurants. They have their own hot sauce and frankly it was better and hotter than anything I’ve had in Mexico.

We ordered Panuchos, Pork Adobo. This spot is one of two Mayan/Yucatan restaurants run by Merida immigrants in Bay area as far as i know. Panuchos is incredibly delicious. You can see very thin layer of black beans between two deep-fried tortillas. And deep fried, the shell is so crispy, and then you’ve got that thin layer of salty, nutty black beans on the inside. Pickled onion, house made habanero salsa complement the flavors. The main ingredients used in Pork Adobo, Cochinita pibil must be Achiote. It has a slight peppery and lemony taste to it. It was a truly incredible experience to learn, eat traditional Mayan food!

The setting is an old converted house, and the food tastes homemade. A very relaxed/casual environment. The food and service were both great. They have a variety of food options from the unique Myan dishes to dependable U.S. dishes such as burgers for kids that may not want to try something new. We will definitely return to try their breakfast menu items.

Great Yucatán cuisine in half Moon Bay. Delicious and comfortablehomey atmosphere. Great parking too. Also the garden around restaurant are interest. It was my first time that I saw the castor oil bush.

The location of the restaurant is super cute! Very reminiscent of Mexico. My boyfriend ordered the garlic prawns and I got the cochinita panuchos. The pictures don’t do the food justice! The prawns were well seasoned and the dish came with fresh tortillas on the side. I got the cochinita panuchos which come with 3 panuchos. It’s very filling! The bean stuffed maize patty is topped off with cold slaw and avocados. The service was okay. The prawns were the only fish option available which was unfortunate since one of us is vegetarian. Plenty of seating.

I had the pork cochinita pibil burrito and it was delicious! It was not overpowered by the typical sour cream, lettuce or cheese. The chicken adobo was exquisite! The chicken was so flavorful, tender and juicy! We will definitely come back to try other dishes. Thanks Chef Arturo for introducing us to Mayan/Yukatan cuisine!

It’s a quaint little place in a house with extended outdoor sitting area. Offers vegetarian options with a decent service. Highly recommend bean enchiladas. Pumpkin flan is very interesting. Veg chimichanga is wrapped potato deep fried and served with sour cream and guacamole. Chips and salsa are good. Their special mojito is on the sweeter side. Service could be more welcoming.

A Disappointing Dining Experience While the friendly and attentive service at Cafe Capistrano was a bright spot, the food unfortunately fell short of expectations. The flavors were lackluster, and the portion sizes seemed disproportionate to the price. The quality and freshness of the ingredients also raised some concerns. Despite the colorful plated ingredients- It felt like the food was lacking that authentic Mexican bold flavors . While the atmosphere might be inviting, the overall dining experience left much to be desired. Will not visit again.

I cannot believe the reviews for this place are so positive, the food was bland, the service lousy, and the setting, eh. Its a house in HMB. I ordered the fish taco platter, large portion of fish, flavorless everything. Wife had the chicken taco platter, and we guess they ran low on chicken that day. Seriously, Taco Bell has better tasting food and probably less costly. The Malbec they served was excellent, but cannot recall the name.
