Even though we had a large party of 12 we were seated pretty quickly. Our server was great, kept up with refills and any other requests we made. Food was delicious, we had appetizers and our party had everything from burgers to steaks and all our food came out at the same time. Afterwards we went outside. We were celebrating a birthday, so we had cake and the kids played in the backyard playground. When we were leaving we went through the restaurant and they had live music, this was on Sunday.
Best steak house in Hondo. Worth stopping by for the fried mushrooms.
Came out to run a spartan race. We will return to this restaurant next year, the food was amazing.
We eat there about 3 to 4 times a year. Worth the drive from S.A.
A great place. Been eating there for decades when ever even near Hondo. JJune boutique is pretty cool. Sales person was nice and attentive.
We have been driving past the steak house for several years and we finally stopped on a Wednesday. Wednesday is couples night, 2 entrees, sides and salad bar for $25. It's beyond a great deal. The food we very good and came out hot. But one of the big highlights was our server, Jaylyn, she was very friendly and we never had to ask for anything. She anticipated and brought it before being asked. Great Atmosphere, Great Food and Great Service. We'll be back.
First time visiting this restaurant; it did not disappoint. Sara, our server was great! She was very friendly and attentive. Atmosphere was good, music was not loud at all, we could hear each other talk. Food was delicious. The Alvin’s Pepper Steak, could have used a little more seasoning but overall it was juicy and delicious. 🤤 my friend had the steak- he said it was cooked very well. Thumbs up! Fried mushrooms were good, the crispy fries were good too. Sweet tea was freshly brewed! Overall, I would return and recommend this place!
Our "go to" when meeting up with family! Thanks for the great dinner and special thanks to Jalynn who was super friendly, courteous and helpful. We will continue to enjoy a special night out at Hermann Sons Steak House.
Great stuffed pepper-steak; best salad bar in the county! Been 3X in the past 30 days for dinner. Will try lunchtime there soon!
Hadn’t been here in years. I was in hondo for a photo shoot and hungry. I was craving a chicken sandwich. The sandwich was amazing. The salad bar was delicious. Really great meal!! Might drive 45 mins to go again soon!
Worth the drive from San Antonio!! Delicious, juice steak, creative pecan chicken breast and the best creamed corn. Missed out on the cobbler, but that means we need to come back. We sat outside and our kiddo played and got lots of energy out 😁 Our server was also very sweet, and she made us feel like valuable guests.
Everything was so delicious. Had a big party with us and they kept up. The food was perfect. Definitely will continue to come. We highly recommend the pork steak it was so juicy.
Love going family had a great time. Sad there wasn't a lot of steak options 😕. Was really hoping to get a t-bone.
My sirloin was top-notch. Medium rare was on the rare side. Just like I like it! My wife told me the enchiladas were the best she's ever had. She is picky, prefers her steak well done and was well pleased with her steak. The fire-roasted creamed corn was spicy. Very spicy. The 5 star atmosphere is for the patio which is very attractive but unfortunately is also in Texas so much of the year it is too hot for comfort. We sat at a booth next to the kitchen. It wasn't noisy and no cooking odors escaped the ventilation equipment. The staff was young, efficient and polite. We will return despite the almost 100 mile round trip from Kerrville.
My family and I stop here on our way home from the Frio. The staff was very friendly and the food was really good. They have a beautiful backyard atmosphere the kids got to stretch their legs and play a little. We will definitely be back!
If you love hamburger steak, then you will LOVE the Alvin Pepper Steak at Hermann Sons Steakhouse. All their food is really good, but the pepper steak is amazing! Their customer service is great, hometown personality with genuine smiles and care. The environment is real nice, and the wife loves their boutique. I highly recommend adding this place to your list of pitstops on Hwy 90.
We had lunch and sat in the bar area where the view is so beautiful. It's the place to be. Although our server was very busy she provided excellent service, we were appreciative. I had Alvin's Pepper Steak with a salad and green beans. You can choose the heat and I got hot. It was very good. We also got a small order of onion rings for an appetizer. The small was a generous portion for the three of us. They were served with ranch dressing for dipping which was delish. I'm a winter Texan and this was my first visit here but I'd definitely go out of my way to eat here again.
First time experience. Celebrated my anniversary. Impeccable fries mushrooms. Beautifully cooked medium rare rib eye with a cheese enchilada covered in chili. The liver and onions were prepared exactly to my liking. You must have the Mac and cheese! Throw in a full salad bar and a very good wine and beer selection and you can't go wrong with this well run restaurant.
Luv this place! Called and made a reservation for a specific table and they were very accommodating. We ordered burgera, chicken fried steaks, the surf and turf and enchiladas.everything was great but the real star of the show was the salad bar and the peach cobbler with ice cream. Our server was sweetheart - professional and helpful.
This is an icon of Hondo Texas. Place has been around since before I was born. Always delicious and packed every weekend. Specials every day. Drinks are cheap . The food taste like what you expect from a good steak house. Indoor and outdoor dining. It's country as home is. People are friendly and service is amazing . I wish I lived closer so I could make it a weekend thing.
We went in the middle of the week around dinnertime and had a great experience! Our server was very attentive, and the food was hot, fresh, and delicious. I recommend the pepper steak, as it is one of their specialties and was quite good. This is a family friendly restaurant with a great deal of selection for all kinds of eaters.
a great place to stop by! they had fast service and good food.
Great food every time I’ve been down in this area to hunt. Been going there for over 30 years..
We decided to finally stop here after passing by Hondo many trips. This is home cooking at its finest! Fried mushrooms have the perfect amount of batter and flavor, cat fish was perfect and the house ranch is dam good along with the thousand Island that came with my salad. Amber took good care of us and will definitely ask for her next time we go. Also try the Coconut moraine pie 🥧.
Walk in and the place is very inviting. I and 2others sat out back for a beautiful Nov view. The food was delicious. Not too heavy, not too light. Filled us for our long ride into Del Rio.
I must start with our server Stephanie R. She was fantastic. Never missed a beat. She kept our drinks filled and brought everything to the table that was needed. And did I mention she has a wonderful personality. Very friendly and always had a smile on her face. Our food. It was superb. No one in our party had a problem with anything they ordered. Food was extremely good all the way down to the ice tea. We haven't been in quite sometime but we WILL be back soon. Thank you for an excellent evening.
First time, been wanting to try their food. Ordered the rib eye, green beans and rice pilaf, enchiladas. Enchiladas were super tasty, rib eye was extremely tender and delicious, green beans were a bit over cooked, didn't have a crunch that I prefer, rice pilaf seemed a bit dated and dry granted it was later in the day. Overall we really enjoyed the food, the patio is amazing, hope to come back for the pepper steak burger and warmer weather to enjoy the patio.
Our family has been dining at Herman Sons, for as long as I can remember. This Saturday, We as a family of 40+ folks, had just recently lost our beloved (father, grandfather, great-grandfather & friend, to all who knew him). His favorite place to eat out was Herman Sons. In his honor the entire group showed up, without reservations at their door. The kindest, nicest folks moved us into a large back room, that was perfect! Bless them. The food was 5 Star as always. Thank You Again Herman Son's. 💓
It was a pleasure to be at this wonderful spot for a special event. Many locals recommended this place, and I must say, the food was simply delicious. I also appreciated the great prices and the friendly staff that made the experience even better. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.
It had been quite a spell since the wife and I stopped and ate here. After a day on the Frio we weee eager to stop and get our grub on. I ordered the chicken fried steak and the Mrs got the 6 oz steak. We also shared a basket of Brussel Sprouts. Everything was cooked as asked and simply delicious. Service was friendly and quick. Need to make sure to visit more often.
Really good steak ..my wife and I got the steak for 2 ,came with 4 sides . All of which were really good ..the green beans weren't canned, the fries were crispy and the creamed corn was made with roasted corn and was some of the best I ever had.. The chocolate cake and carrot cake were very good too..all in all a very good experience ..worth the drive ,for sure
Southern hospitality at its best! From the entryway to the table, each staff member greeted us and continued to check in on our orders and give us updates.. I ordered the chicharones with beer cheese. I also had a lunch plate with the 6 ounce sirloin steak cooked medium and the grilled vegetables. I ordered an extra side of the steam broccoli 🥦. The steak was cooked perfectly to my order and topped with a seasoned butter. The vegetables had a nice seasoning without being too salty. The place is a little louder and busy with lots of people coming and out. Great place. I'll sit a little further away from the middle of the dining room next time I visit. They have a nice large meeting room space, and the menu pricing was very reasonable for a home cooking style menu 😋
We came to Hermann Sons Steak House in Hondo, Texas with our friends who highly recommended it. The restaurant is very spacious it has a bar and an outdoor patio area. It was too hot today to be outside but I can see it would be great on a cool fall or winter evening. The bar seems to have everything you could desire. We started of with some great tasting onion rings but we all came with the same thing in mind the Alvin Special. I ordered mine hot and it was perfect. I also had a trip to their great salad bar and had fried mushrooms. Everything was well prepared and tasted great. The salad bar area was maintained by a staff member that kept everything in order and clean, very impresive.
First time here. We're greeted and seated. I ate the chef's special that had a sweet and spicy sauce on top. I wasn't sure about that as a topping but to my surprise it was delicious! Loved the fried mushrooms that were seasoned just right and hubby had that Big Tex burger. All I can say is that I was glad we stopped by after passing it up several times while driving to Uvalde from San Antonio. Will surely stop by again to try other dishes.
Super great service! Hand made foods that taste amazing! Super fun folksy decor. They have a really cute gift shop. Think Cracker Barrel but cuter. Who ever is their buyer is killing it! I had their signature chopped steak. I wish I would have gotten the hot because it was pretty tame at medium. The fire roasted cream corn was a fun twist on a classic. The breading on their chicken fried steak was fresh and unique. I enjoyed it greatly. Will stop again!

Everything is good! staff was friendly and prompt. Salad bar is out of this world fresh and drinks are the bomb
We did have to wait a while for our meal however, we were told what was going on which we appreciate being kept in the loop, and did receive our meal shortly. Food was good, staff friendly and professional.
Love it! Went on a Sunday for drinks and dinner. What a great patio (but it was to hot). The hubby and I sat at the gorgeous bar and enjoyed a michelada. It wasn't busy so we were seated quickly. I love the salad bar! I had the chopped steak with peppers and cheese and my hubby had the chicken fried steak - both worth having again. The server was friendly and fast. They have the cutest country gift store. My FAVORITE thing - the small sign posted on top of the bar (lower the volume on ur electronic device) ...this place values the customer and their dining experience - I'll be back!
Chicken fried steak. Very bland and extremely tough. Could only eat half of it. Got tired of trying to cut and chew it. My wife's enchilada plate was excellant. Great service at the bar and the place itself was very homey and beautiful. Will go back and try something else, but it's a ways out there.
Such a warm and friendly place! The steak, salad bar and bread were delicious! I wasn't a fan of the Mac n cheese, but that was my personal taste. I wish I could have made more than one trip to the salad bar. Best steak ever and the homemade bread was great!! You won't be disappointed!
The steak was so delicious and the sides right on point and the ice cold beer and drinks,,,all delicious,,,,Well,,,We Will be Back.
The food and service was awesome but the locals would not stop staring. Also, there are a few swastikas in the restroom...
Nicely decorated with western decor. Service is good as well. Food was o.k., chicken fried chicken was plain.
Best salad bar! All you can eat for 9.99 comes with soup and a nice big slice of bread. Always have daily specials. I heard the chicken fried steak is good too. Heads up! Menu changed and now the salad bar is 16.99 which is way to much for the choices. Sadly, I won't be going back!
Been meaning to try this restaurant for years seems like every time I was in the area it was on a Monday when they are closed. The food was delicious. The reason I didn’t give it five stars is I asked for mid-rare and it was more on the medium side. Seemed like the waitress/bartender was in a hurry to end her shift although she was pretty attentive I did ask for blue cheese on my side salad and it came with ranch , overall I would highly recommend this restaurant and would return.
I didn't expect to find such a great restaurant out in the middle of nowhere, Texas. It seemed like the bar area was a little bit more modern than the rest of the restaurant. I wish the weather had been warmer because the outside area looked very inviting. The food was excellent albeit a little pricey. We had a brand new waitress but she was still incredible. If I'm ever in this area again I will stop here for a steak dinner.
We decided to make this another stop for dinner and we were not disappointed. We ordered the fried mushrooms as appetizers followed by a 6oz Ribeye with baked potato and a 12oz Ribeye with grilled vegetables. They come with a house salad and bread. Everything was delicious, glad we returned.
This was my first visit to Hermann Sons Steak House. I had driven past it many times over the years and always wondered about it. My friends treated me to a birthday dinner near their home and I finally got to try this place. I decided to go with the steak and enchilada plate, since I was curious about enchiladas at a steak place that clearly wasn't a Mexican restaurant. The steak was good, properly cooked, as was my friends, with a nice pink center, charred on the outside, juicy, and cooked perfect like a medium rare steak should be. We both commented that the cook actually did this right, where many places don't. The enchilada was so-so, the meat/chili sauce on it was strong with bland chili powder, the meat was lean and a little dry. I probably wouldn't go with enchiladas again, but the steak made up for it. Our sides changed last minute when we noticed the roasted cream corn, both my friend and I decided to get this as a side and it wasnt disappointing. It had good flavor and was unique, the most similar thing Ive had is a Korean baked corn, and this was a cross between Mexican corn in a cup, and Korean baked corn. We purchased a sampler of fried mushrooms, onion rings, and zucchini, all of which were really good. The small order of these was enough to feed 3 people with a few pieces left over. The portion size on this was huge, and Id hate to see the large order. Prices were fair, service was pretty good, we were there close to closing and after a large rush had just come thru. Overall the food was good, and I would consider visiting again to try a few more items.
Stopped in for a late lunch. Seated quickly and order taken quickly. Food took a little while to come out but may be that is due to nothing precooked? That’s a good thing. I had the hamburger steak with cheese, peppers and onions cooked inside with rice. Everything tasted good and our total bill for 5 adults was $78. Service from wait staff was also good. There is a store on the side that kept the ladies occupied after we paid. The only negative was the side taco I ordered didn’t really have much flavor. I would eat here again when next in Hondo.
Was driving around and saw this place, it looked busy so decided to give it a try. That many hondonians can't be wrong. I ordered the fried pickles to start but also got a salad bar trip with the meal. The pickles were great but the salad bar was fairly limited with their toppings. It was missing some of my favorites including olives, pickles, cauliflower, and artichoke hearts. I got the grilled catfish for my entree and it was very good.
Flash back to high school days when going to "Hermann" was the in thing. It's been a few years and lots of things have changed. Love the updates. Menu was familiar and food was good. Service was the down fall. Our waitress, and most of the employees we saw, seemed to wish they were anywhere but there. Our food was delivered (and placed) on the wrong table. Our waitress picked it up and moved it to our table, then seemed surprised that we were not happy. Bummer as this place has a lot of great memories.
Everything was fine. My wife and I had chicken fried steak and a 6oz sirloin lunch special. $35 with tip. Food was good service fine. A potata and meat, no vegetable No bread. This I guess is the new standard. It seems wrong. Its like a 1960 government crappy food pyramid. We sould all be eating better and this patern don't help.
I wasn't sure what to expect here but I was pleasantly surprised. The brussel sprouts were good, the burger and onion rings were as well. My steak and my husband's burger were over cooked by a lot, but the flavor was good. Next time we will try the salad bar. I do wish the server was a little more forthcoming with information, suggesting the salad bar or stating the burger is spicy, so if you aren't used to spice, to get mild. Or even the special for the day. Information that new patrons need to know. It was overall pretty good and we will return.
Passing through Hondo, arrived at 12.45p to find a busy restaurant. This is an obvious local gem as evident from the large groups. There’s a gift shop when you come in, great looking bar area and a big main dining area. We were greeted promptly, and sat at a table without delay. Our server Kayla approached almost immediately and was fabulous throughout our meal. We felt welcomed and were very well attended to. We chose a fried sampler appetizer with breaded and fried onion rings, mushrooms and pickles. These are served with a ranch dipping sauce and a gravy for the mushrooms. Everything was very good. I ordered a 12oz ribeye which came with a side salad and I chose the rice pilaf as my side. I was underwhelmed by the steak. The ribeye was thin, probably less than 1/2 an inch and not very flavorful. Disappointing. I had to add salt and pepper and then trimmed several inedible pieces of fat/sinew. At $37 this is WAY over priced. Compared to big franchise restaurants, from Longhorn to Outback, this steak was inferior and as I mentioned, over priced. The service and ambiance is superb. I’ll come again in the future and will try something else.
Not the old Herman sons! Staff is hit or miss, prices are a bit high for the area, restaurant is clean. Food can be hit or miss.

Ok I walk in, we stand there a bit. Waitress cone's up and said " how many" my girlfriend said "3 plus Cooper" she said " I am the only here" has she looks to the backdoor, to the outside. Then the waitress said" I guess I can set you outside" I said " why outside" waitress looks " oh service dog" guess she didn't look. I do get that sometimes, but I think it's important to note. So that's why 3 Stars other than people looking, but like I said you get use to it. Now Cooper did bark one time at my girlfriend coming out of the restroom 🚺 😂 but he knows I wanted to leave. That's normal and ok for a service dog to do that..,... there's a teaching moment ta da
Unfortunately, the grilled chicken at lunch yesterday was too dry & I didn't have the time for the kitchen to make another one. The French fries were great. No discount or refund offered. Great ambiance.
Been stopping here for 25 years on our way to Big Bend. Last time was April 2017. Stopped tonight for dinner but was disappointed. We always get the pepper steak with cheese, but something was different with the cheese they used this time. Very bland flavor, like cheez-whiz. Don't think we'll stop on the way home.
It was ok. Actually I was pretty disappointed in it. Our waitress was exceptional. The salad bar was very good and fresh.
My family and I visited for the 1st time on Aug 23rd. We had reservations for 10 at 6:30. Despite there being plenty of empty tables, that stayed empty even after we were seated, we were seated until 7. It took an additional 30min, for our server to take and bring our drink order and get our food order. We wait an hour for our food to come. During that time our drinks were left empty multiple times and we intl saw our server 2-3 time. Once our food did arrive we discovered that multiple orders were placed incorrectly. Four people order ribeyes and two of us receive sirloins. After waiting for an hour we just ate what we got because we didn’t want to wait any longer. Both sirloins were over cooked, to the point that the only way I was able to enjoy mine was to use steak sauce. We will give it another try but based on our 1st experience, the juice isn’t worth the squeeze. You can get better food at chain steakhouses for less money. L
The service tonight just waiting to get seated was AWFUL! There were empty tables and yet they were seating no one. People were all standing around waiting to be seated, and some people even left. I realize that they were short staffed tonight but don't make people stand around when there is available seating. I would rather sit down, relax and have a drink and have to wait for a server vs stand for 1 hour and 15 minutes. The buss boy also acted like there was zero urgency. There was absolutely no management at all tonight. This is the second weekend in a row I have been here and the service was totally different than last week. The food is still good however. Try and do better folks.
The restaurant food quality is a hit or miss. Depending on who is cooking the steaks not cooked properly to your liking. There are days that it looks & taste like they just boil it.
service was great, the food was delicious , great steaks . Great choices. I recommend the steak filet and hubbie had fish.

This was probably one of the worst dinners we have had in a while. Entire family pulled off the highway after a long day at the river, very excited to try out the food as there were several glowing reviews, but we left very disappointed. When we first arrived we were loving the ambiance. The patio area is beautiful. It’s really a lovely place to sit and relax, we even played a little tetherball. It was great! The food was where it went downhill. The table bread was okay, but the butter was mixed to death; to the point it was liquid goop. My mother ordered one of the chicken entrees. Her chicken was dry and bland to the point she decided she wasn’t going to even bother trying to eat it, and her mashed potatoes were stone cold. My steak (ordered medium rare) was indeed pink, but was so chewy, tough, and dry that I also did not eat it. One of our party members as well as myself specifically asked if there was a “loaded” baked potato option. We were told yes, and therefore ordered loaded baked potatoes. We received potatoes with butter, cheese, and barely any sour cream. They were also not salted at all. I asked our server if they perhaps had green onions, she says yes but they’re extra. I don’t understand why we weren’t just told that when we ordered “loaded” baked potatoes? So I said that was fine and asked if we could have some. Takes a while, but we get them. Then we both realize neither potato has bacon in it. Again, WHY not just tell us when we asked about the green onions or the “loaded” option? So we ask again and receive the same answer, it’s extra. Eventually we get our toppings for an actually loaded baked potato, and found it to be the only truly edible part of our meals. My husband was disappointed in his dish as well, as it seemed to just be basic hamburger patties with chopped up peppers slathered in cheese to make it presentable. Overall it was just a very weird experience. None of us took any leftovers despite there being a good amount of food left behind. Our server was obviously not in control of the food and we totally understand that, but it seemed like a little lackluster. I will say when the manager came over to discuss our less than favorable experience she was very professional and immediately took those entrees off our bill which we very much appreciated. We also enjoyed the appetizers, the sample platter was decent! We all agreed that had we left it at drinks and appetizers it probably would have been a more pleasant experience.
I went with my family and they’re allergic we told the waiter and she gave onw of my family members said that and still gave them cheese.
Went for my birthday lunch, reserved a table on the patio for 25 2 weeks in advance. We were there over 3 hours, 11:15-2:45. We waited 2 hours for our food. The poor waitress was serving the whole patio area and some inside. It was so ridiculous we didn't even eat the cake because it took so long to be brought to our table. If a big party is coming, they need their own server. The only saving grace was the kids had room to play. If we had been inside with 8 kids, we would have walked out. Some guess had to ask for their plates to go because they had to leave. No body was impressed waiting this long. We will NOT be visiting again with a large party.
I was there with some friends, I asked for broiled fish, they brought it fried. I had to wait for them to bring the correct one (If I had been there by myself I had just left) they cooked it in a hurry without flavor, not even a little of salt on it. Not to mention that we had to wait more than an hour to get a table even that there were 2 available.
I ordered the Buckaroo chicken tenders with mashed potatoes. All of it was bland has no flavor at all. I have been a long time customer and I have to say this was the first time my food had no flavor. Server and atmosphere were great as always.
Where do I begin? I had to stay in Hondo around New Years, and believe me, the choices are limited for dining, unless you consider fast food dining. So I made reservations for New Year’s Eve, for 8 pm. I noticed on the website that closing was listed as 9 pm, but I thought hey, it’s New Year’s Eve, they’re probably extending closing time for the holiday. Well, Hondo is waaaay out there, no street lights out of the town itself, and I got a little lost picking up my dinner guest. I called and said I’d be there closer to 8:15pm “ No problem “ I was told. I got there closer to 8:30 pm, and was once again assured I wouldn’t be rushed through my meal. I wasn’t rushed, but by 8:55 pm I was the only table still there. We ordered drinks as soon as we were seated, but when I tried to order a second round, was told” We already called last call”. Where I’M from, the waitesss/ server will let someone who already had a drink in front of them know that they’re calling last call, and would I like another? Not here.My food was room temperature, not hot. My broccoli was cold. The salad bar was nothing special. My friend ordered the all you care to eat salad bar, and was given a small soup bowl for the salad. This was one New Year’s Eve I won’t soon forget.I’m never going to Hondo again, so that’ll save me from having to consider this place again.
This was our favorite spot to get steak for along time, but since 2020, the quality fell off a cliff. I do understand that beef prices went nuts then, and still are nutty, but it seems that the cost cutting took priority. Been a few times since to try again as anyone can have a bad day, unfortunately the change seems permanent. I hate to say that because I really liked this place, I just am not willing to pay that much for a sub-par steak. I get the same thing cooked the same way every time, I'm not comparing different cuts or cooking methods. Service has always been excellent and the place is always clean.
They can improve their wait time for sure. The servers are friendly. Seems like the people in the kitchen are napping back there.
Was there this last Wednesday. Service was ok. waited 1.5 hours for the food and when it came out the salmon was burnt and very small. Plates were cold as were the baked potatoes. Waitress apologiz…

Never again! Way overrated and way overpriced for what you get. We went for a family get together (much to my chagrin) and I knew what I was up against as I had been there previously...so noisy!!…
I have to echo what a previous poster said. This is overpriced, glorified diner food and not even as good as diner food. The Britsch nachos, which cost $16, were a few measly greasy chips with a sp…
Food was mediocre, at best. Worst chicken fried chicken breast. Batter tasteless and did not adhere to breast. Breast tough and chewy. Side salad served in a small bowl you could not even mix the dressing. Only saving grace was the service, which was good.
Couldn't get a kids plate when I advised I couldn't eat much due to (gastric sleeve) I told the waiter I was from out of town and that I'll just be wasting food didn't give me a choice so ordered a full plate chicken fried chicken was bland with no flavor, Mac and cheese was great , bake potato was great . Not Bariatric friendly
I have not been to Herman's & Son Steak house in at a year due my job & we were looking forward to eating Chicken Fried Chicken Breast, Mashed Potatoes with white gravy & Rice Pilaf & the Mexican Chicken Nreast, Baked potato & Onion Rings . It was such a disappointment higher prices, no more salad bar cost $3.99 more & quality of the food was extremely bland. Reminded me of hospital food or even a Swanson TV dinner! The Chicken tasted rubbery- dry & ourter part tasted uncooked. The mashed potatoes tasted like the dirt was not rinsed off the red potato so tasteless & dry. The Rice Pilaf tasted like it was drenched in butter without any seasonings. The baked potato was so dry had to use 4 packages of butter. Then the bread tasted like day old bread could barely cut with a knife. We spent $45 biggest waste of money. I had a friend who use to be one of their cooks we always knew when he was cooking the meal would be excellent but he passed away unsure who cooks now but it someone who needs to go to cooking school & the waitres came 1x then came with the check even the service was not good. This was suppose to be a celebration but the food ruined it all & then seeing cost of the meal added insult to injury. My friends had said they didn't see the restaurant as busy anymore I know why! I wished the owners would take more timevto taste the quality of their food & review the food because it no longer has good food. It is tasteless, bland and can be compared to hospital food. Disappointed so sad we use to brag about out steak house for almost 30 years but I know I will no longer recommend even notice our waitres focused on those with the alcohol drinks & ensured she kept serving them vs those of us which were not drinking beers maybe TBC needs to observe what we observed it was that obvious. I think if Mr.Alvin were alive he would know why we were so disappointed. Terrible tasting food & poor service. I will no longer recommend our lil Steak house !
LEAVING THIS REVIEW FOR MY BOYFRIEND First they never went to check up on him after taking his order. When his food arrived, they never gave him any silverware. He had to get up and ask for some. His drink was empty and they never offered to refill it. They were too busy chatting! His server was Katelyn H. Food was good but the service was just not it!
One of the worst steaks I have had in my life. Drove over from San Antonio to give them a try. Golden Coral buffet steaks are 10x better than the piece of leather I received. They apparently don't understand what the term rare means. I sent the first one back and the second was worse. The cook isn't the only issue; the cut of meat was terrible. Service was also bad and it was 3pm in the afternoon with no crowd. Expensive and terrible food - avoid. I heard great things about this place but I will never, ever go back.
Cold food, the order was incorrect, and now food poisoning. What a wonderful experience it was. We've gone here for well on 30 years, and I promise will never be back.
Had high hopes for this place, based on the reviews. Everything was bland, and no salt and pepper on anything... Even the fries. Best thing we had was the ranch
My husband and myself have been to Hermanns before many times. Their service and food was awesome until our last trip to Hondo,Tx. We specifically drove from San Antonio to Hondo to eat at Hermanns. When we arrived there was no waiting so we we're seated as we entered the establishment. The waitress took our order and brought our drinks and chips and salsa. After that everything went down hill. We were there an hour and still no food. The restaurant was emptying as customers were leaving and those that entered after us we served. We never had that happen to us. My husband and myself don't plan on ever going back. Can't rate them a zero but we would if we could. We don't recommend this restaurant.
Was highly disappointed from the get go. Bar mats are full of gnats. Seriously a cloud of gnats. Went to the restroom, not only was there trash everywhere but they had a horrible smell. To top of off, they ran out of steak! It’s not even 5 o’clock!! Let’s not talk about the prices! Definitely not coming back nor would I recommend this place!
Why is it so expensive and why was the chicken more chewy than gum? It has been almost a year since we came here, it's worse. Got the order wrong, food was very low quality. Again, why is this so expensive? Your country music makes people sad because their food isn't cheering them up.
Went at 11:45 on a Thursday morning and sat at the bar. Two workers were talking at the end of the bar and never even acknowledged us after several minutes. We were the only ones there and they just continued talking like we didn’t exist. Walked out and no one even tried to stop us.
Ordered food last night and it made me and my husband sick to our stomach, bread was hard and the drippings for the bread were all gross looking and tasted like oil.
Went on Saturday nov 1,2025 we asked table for 10 said was going be 30 minute wait so we asked how about outside no wait it was chilly placed order it started to get cold requested if they could turn on heater said we're going to check it took more than an hour to serve our meals well guess meals got there steaks were not well done blood coming out was cold rice pilaf was cold and mushy like it came out of the freezer, kids burger was cold and fries and by the way still waiting for heater request to be turned on to top it off it was super expensive food was not worth what we paid for $$$$$never again by the way heater was turned on 30 minutes before we left don't recommend it place !!!
We're regulars, and love the patio more than anything. Tonight we ordered the chicken fried steak to share. When it came, I cut into it to discover the bottom was completely burned. We asked the very kind waitress if we could send it back. She took our steak and left. Soon, the manager returned with our burnt steak in her hand. She asked if we wanted a whole new steak. We said yes. She said but only about a quarter of it was burned! Yes, the quarter that covered the complete bottom of the steak! What did she expect? To replace 1/4th of a steak and for us to keep 3/4ths of it??? My non-confrontational husband said never mind, we'll just keep the burnt steak. The manager said she would give us a discount. I ate my horrible-tasting steak, but my husband left his on his plate. When we got the check, it looked like they comped my tea! The total bill was the price of the steak! I have no complaint about our wonderful waitress or the beautiful patio. We still had a nice time, but I have a serious complaint about the food and the way the manager handled it.
Horrible customer service. Bartender/waitress didn’t even bother to acknowledge me. I just got up and left. It’s sad because I really wanted to try the food.
I've been coming here for over 15 years, way back when it was just the small restaurant before renovations. I'm incredibly upset and disappointed in my experience this evening. With the prices of eating out these days especially at a steakhouse like this one I don't get to do it very often. From time to time I like to treat myself with a nice home cooked meal that I can get from a place like this versus fast food. Waiting 30 minutes for my to-go order wasn't the problem. I ordered two Britsch specials both with rice pilaf and broccoli with cheese sauce on the side. I also ordered two teas. I got home showered and was going to make my plate and my husband's plate and noticed there was no chili. We called and the manager- I guess she was the manager I'm not even sure. She said she "didn't know what to do". The only thing she offered was a discount on our next order. Frustrated we accepted with no other choice and hung up the phone. We continued to try to make the best of our meal which mind you was almost $60 with tip. I shouldn't have even tipped but I try to do the right thing. The girl should have double checked the order, her along with the kitchen screwed up. There was no chili on our order first off and secondly the cheese sauce was cold and congealed and thirdly as we began to try to eat- the meat was so dry and crusty and there was no peppers in it at all no peppers in the pepper steak?? I don't think the cook knew what they are doing. Or they just don't care. And what sucks even more is the whole restaurant was dead there was nobody hardly there at all so there's no excuse for this kind of preparation of our meals. I want my order refunded, I feel completely ripped off. I don't want to come back here for a " discount " on another subpar meal. I truly miss the old days when the food was made with care and the owners greeted you with warmth and kindness And did their best to make sure the customer was happy. Note* I will delete this review once this has been resolved, otherwise it can stay up. Thank you.
I had very high expectations for this place. Needless to say, I was immensely disappointed. Me and my date were told the wait was 25 minutes. A party of four and a party of seven got their tables before we did even tho they arrived way after we did. Mind you, me and my date are Hispanic and these two groups were not. After the 2nd group got their table before us, we approached the host and his excuse was that we were accidentally dropped from the list even tho we were sitting in front of him this whole time. Aside that, our male waiter never asked us for refills. A young woman waitress was very kind and would ask us for refills and if everything was okay even tho she wasn't our waitress. Aside all this, my grilled catfish plate looked like a serving for a child. Fish didn't look or taste like catfish. My dates chicken fried steak was delicious tho. Only good thing out of this disapointing experience.
