Taiko Sushi is a long-standing Irvine favorite known for large portions, affordable prices, and fast service. Many enjoy the fresh sushi and generous portions, especially the Tamago rolls and Spicy Tuna Rolls. Some find the food Americanized or overly reliant on mayo.
Tip: Go for the sushi and try a variety of fish for a more authentic Japanese experience. Be aware that some dishes may be heavily sauced with mayo.

Amazing Dimsum. Price is reasonable for the quality and quantity of Dimsum. Suimai is a highlight.
best in atmosphere cleanliness’s and being organize …. their smoothies were so refreshing one of the best smoothies i’ve ever had.,,, food were fantastic .
Drove all the way from San Diego to here on a SAT morning just for this!! They serve pretty decent dim sum + a really unique almond sweet soup bake (酥皮杏仁茶)it was surprisingly delicious!! Price wise ~ it’s acceptable! All the dishes are starting from $5ish but you gotta eat something FRESH! Will come back again when visiting Irvine again!
My Chinese girlfriend made me come here with her and try it. I've never had lobster with soy sauce so this was new. We ordered way too much food for just us two to eat, but it was really good. I'm not sure what they're called, but almond deserts they give you at the end are really good as well. The service was great and I'd definitely come back.
A really great Dim Sum restaurant in Irvine that also has a regular menu which you can actually still order from even during the Dim Sum service. It's one of the pricier options in the area, but we'll worth it and I would argue even better than the even more expensive option in the District. My guess is people agree because there will regularly be lines with wait times of 15-30 minutes.
You come here for the amazing flavors, not the atmosphere. Basically, everything we ordered, was very tasty. All the food seemed to be prepared with expertise and care. Place seemed to be constantly crowded with lines out the door. Dim Sum here, I can honestly say, is better than most places.
Good food, Less server. Dim sum is great. Very busy on lunch. The price is a little higher since the taste is good. However, it's for Asian style food that Americans may not like it much.
Went for dim sum around noon. The place was busy and we had to wait for a bit. The food was delicious and they had a wide range of selections. You can also order from the regular menu as well. The service was attentive. I would go back.
China Garden is as good as it gets for Dim Sum in Orange County. Shu Mai, Char Su Bao, Shrimp Balls and BBQ pork Chow fun are all excellent.
I loved the quality of food and service👍🏻 We arrived around 5-6 pm on Sat night, it was all busy, a few tables were available. The portions were huge)) We really enjoyed dinner at this place. Highly recommend👍🏻
Many reviews are talking about how Americanized the sushi was but I’m half Japanese, half Chinese, and if you know how to order, very Japanese and authentic. I recommend mainly going for the sushi and getting a variety to try each type of fish. Premium Japanese food, everything was so good and the matcha Mont Blanc ice cream dessert was unbelievable. The fish is incredibly fresh, and the a5 Wagyu is so fatty and satisfying to eat. My favorite food was the sweet shrimp boat and it was loaded with crab, shrimp, and the fried head was out of this world, incredible rich and soft. Overall, one of the best sushi restaurants in Irvine and it was reasonably priced. The service was very fast as we were at the sushi bar
If you’re looking for a place where both humans and furry friends can enjoy a meal, Taiko Japanese Restaurant is the spot! This happens to be my uncle’s favorite restaurant (and, let’s be honest, his dog’s too—especially when it comes to their delicious chicken). We were invited to join him, and it was such a treat for all of us! Not only is the food absolutely amazing, but the bonus is that they’re pet-friendly. So yes, we brought the dog, and he definitely enjoyed his fair share of attention—and maybe a little chicken too! 😄 The restaurant has a convenient parking lot right next door, so no need to stress about finding a spot. The atmosphere is super friendly, and the staff made us feel right at home. We tried a variety of dishes, and every single one was mouth-wateringly good! Whether you’re a sushi lover or craving something warm, this place has something for everyone. Can’t wait to go back with my uncle and our furry friend for round two! 🩷
We had large group with 1 server. Order was taken by table...tables that were pushed together for our families. Ordering was slow and not smooth. We had three separate orders, and food came out at staggered times. And ordering by table did not facilitate the placement of each dish; they had to ask who ordered what, for every plate. Still worth it! Will be back.
Taiko Japanese Restaurant, one of the oldest Japanese establishments in Orange County, offers an authentic dining experience with a focus on affordability. The sushi is notably fresh, a highlight for seafood enthusiasts. However, some dishes might lean towards the salted side. Overall, Taiko is a solid choice for those seeking traditional Japanese cuisine.
This was a pretty nice spot for some Japanese food. The waiter was very nice and attentive. The food is brought very quickly as well, and tastes very good. The dine-in entrance is in the back, which is a little weird. Tamago rolls were amazing here, one of the best we tried. They have plastic utensils, which is strange. The service is fantastic, though, very attentive and responsive. Good sushi, slightly over grilled teriyaki chicken, but still good, nice green iced tea. We had a to-go order, which was well-packed and brought after we finished.
Authentic dim sum with wide varieties. Dim Sum come in carts that is reminiscent of old Hong Kong style restaurants. Waiters are friendly, attentive and helpful. A must try in Irvine! Dinner there was equally impressive with authentic Canto-style dishes that are mouth-watering.
The best siu mai I’ve had in the USA. As for the rest of the dimsum taste wise it was ok. We also ordered their lobster noodles too and it was pretty good. On the crowded side especially on the weekends. Waiting time for us was around 30 min.
First time at this place. Been in Irvine for a year and every time when passing by this restaurant, we see people waiting outside. The to go order takes about 30 mins to ready. PRICE is quite reasonable. Food taste okay but we live the porridge quite a bit.
Seems like we always hit this place when in the area, the missus loves the seafood. When getting lobster you must get it as the house special (fried with seasoning and jalapeños), super yummy. The eggplant is my favorite dish here. I would go to this seafood restaurant just to eat the Eggplant Szechuan Style I like how the sauce is not too wet and the eggplants are caramelized with the sauce. Every once in a while the eggplant dish comes out super caramelized and it's like having a mouth O. Other dishes we usually get are the Pan Fried Diced Beef Steak w/Black Pepper and the Crispy Deep Fried Bean Curd. Lunch time is pretty decent and fun too if you like dim sum. Place used to be busier, must be all the new competition. Would rate it a 5 if the place was cleaner, bathrooms are kind of gross. June 2023 Just got Eggplant Szechuan Style for take out, don't do it. None of the caramelized goodness, taste is fine but texture is all wrong. Just soggy veggies that gets steamed in container. May 2024 Went at lunch time to get fresh shrimp and dimsum. So good. Added some pictures too.
Get 6 dim sum items and get lobster noodle for $21.99. The dim sum was pretty good but the lobster noodles wasn’t. It lacked flavor and I personally didn’t prefer the texture of the noodles. Service was fast and attentive.
It is not what it used to be. The quality of the food is not as good as it once was. I ordered unagi kabayaki which fresh water eel over rice. Instead all I got was the unagi with a bit of pickled kelp. Had to order the combo in order to get rice. The other 3 item combination was only ok. The steak was tender but cold once it got to the table. Service was acceptable.
Taiko has been a Japanese food stable in Irvine for many years. They have updated their menu and prices. Most items are the same. The food is great, I love their sushi. The service is also very nice. The store has a Japanese feel to it. I noticed the air quality hasn't been that great. It's not as bad as a Korean BBQ place, but I usually smell like tempura after eating there. To go is usually fast if ordered ahead. I also like they start using point system to give you some discount. Overall, it's a nice choice if I'm craving for some Japanese food.
This is a great spot for a wide variety of sushi. We went there with extended family and almost closed the place down because we were enjoying the company and not pressured to free up a table. The service was decent (they don’t check on you but will immediately get what you need when you ask; it’s an Asian thing), and the atmosphere is very casual and comfortable. I’m not a sushi person so I ordered a 2 item Teishoku (think bento), which had so much food I couldn’t finish it and for the amount, the prices were actually quite reasonable. My dish had sesame chicken and vegetable tempura, while also coming with salad, miso soup, and rice. My daughter barely finished her salmon aburi yuzu (salmon sushi with a yuzu sauce), and my wife could not finish her unagi California. Again, solid flavors and a lot of food for the price.
Dim sum are good. Shrimp options are good. Turnip cake was good too. There’s more of pork and beef options. Less of chicken option except the chicken legs. I like the way the dim sums are served in carts. I am very new to this restaurant. More of chicken option would also be great in dim sums. It’s too crowded. I had been at the peak time I guess. Super long line, but it gets cleared quick.
China Garden is always our go-to dim sum place. We love the siu mai and pineapple custard buns. However we went today for lunch, obviously the siu mai recipe was changed as it’s less flavored and I think they put lots of fatty pork. Every bite was full of oily greasy fatty pork. It gives us less motivation to go in the future. Luckily the pineapple custard bun is still very good.
China Garden held cherished memories from my childhood as it was my mom's preferred spot for dim sum. It pains me to see its decline. The flavors now miss the mark, and the overall cleanliness is questionable, especially in the restroom. The staff seemed more interested in personal chats than in attending to customers. It was especially off-putting when a waitress showed displeasure after we passed on her dim sum offerings. Quite a letdown.
We have been here many times before and loved it. Most recently we were… disappointed. The biggest gripe I have is way too much mayo. In everything. Anything with crab salad (aka 90% of rolls) were way too saturated with mayo, to the point where that was the main thing that I could taste. Same with the volcano roll, absolutely drenched in mayo. Usually I go to sushi for a cleaner, healthier meal, and this felt at ends with normal sushi meals. We also had some rolls that came out ~1 hour after ordering on a not very busy night. I think for the cost it was not very worth it. I hope they can work on this issue because it used to be my favorite local sushi place.
I ordered pork BBQ buns to go, and when I got home, I found a fly on one of them. Totally unacceptable. I expect better food safety and cleanliness standards from any restaurant. Very disappointed and won’t be returning.
I was treated badly by a waiter and left without finishing my meal. He was arrogant and disrespectful. Although the manager apologized after hearing my complaint, it appears that there is no consequence for unprofessional behavior at this place because the waiter was so quick and eager to refer me to the manager. Their dim sum is not the best but their price is in par with the top dim sum restaurants in town. There are more than 6 dim sum restaurants in town. Two fancy dim sum restaurants just opened within the last 30 days. Good luck with the competition. With this bad service, you need it.
Service is very poor. If I can give it a zero, I will. Chinese waiters were rude. Refused to add two additional seats when we had family members joining two of us 15 minutes after we were seated. We were told to go to the front desk to ask for a manager approval. The waiter was short with us and turned his back on us without any explanation. When a Spanish waiter gave us additional setting, other Chinese waiters gave this Spanish waiter a hard time in public. What a scene! I left in the middle of my meal because I was very uncomfortable.
This place used to be decent, but when we came around noon on January 5, the food quality and service had deteriorated fast — and badly. First, while we were waiting to be seated, a Hispanic server completely ignored us. At 2 p.m., with plenty of empty tables, what exactly is the justification for making guests wait 5–10 minutes just to sit down? It’s a great way to make customers feel unwelcome from the very first minute. Second, the staff member handling orders had zero patience. We were told they couldn’t do fried items today, which meant half the menu was unavailable. Fine — things happen. But when the restaurant isn’t even busy, why the attitude and impatience? It’s honestly baffling. Japanese restaurants are usually known for attentive service, and this place used to reflect that. Now the service is simply low-level. Then the food arrived: the chicken was cold. You don’t serve cold cooked food to paying customers — that’s basic restaurant hygiene and professionalism. On top of that, we asked this same server for a straw and he completely brushed it off. Unacceptable. I’m leaving a negative review because this experience showed a clear lack of care for customers. I used to like this restaurant, but whether it’s new staff or poor management, the current food and service don’t deserve my respect — and I won’t be coming back.
