Went to MaGoa for the first time last Wednesday and we had such a good time, hence the review. Every dish we ordered (lamb biriyani, palak paneer samosas, all 3 types of naans, nariyal gallina and achari nimboo tikka) were a hit among us, especially the achari nimboo tikka which we even got a takeaway of later. The lamb in the biriyani, and chicken in the nariyal gallina were very tender and naans were also much bigger than we thought would be (great value for money and was not too much to eat for 3 people) and went very well with nariyal gallina. Service was also very quick and the 2 waitresses were very attentive and efficient. Thank you MaGoa for giving us such a lovely dining experience, we'll be back for sure :)
Great fresh Goan dishes! Lovely ambeince. Food served in great style! Modern Regional (Goa) Indian cooking at its best! Fresh flavours. Next door a lovely little wine shop GLUG where one can buy Portuguese wines to go with the Portuguese influenced Goan food. A must visit in Putney!
A lovely little secret! Great dishes, really good, excellent wine (+corkage) but still at very good prices. And above all, very good, friendly staff/service. Overall, well worth the 40 minute Uber ride!
Such a special place! Incredibly tasty food, packed full of flavour! The staff are all so friendly and made us feel so welcome. A short walk from the Putney stations, and there is even a bus stop right outside.
Amazing meal. Probably better than Dishroom and way less crowded. Good service and really good cocktails! Highly recommend everything.
Always great food and friendly staff. This is one of those places where you feel welcome. Was first time that actually got table without booking. Portions are just right and prices are not eye-watering. Only thing that might make you cry is their spiciest dish 😁
Beautiful food and friendly service. We asked for recommendations and they were spot on. Murgh mahkni - which was charcoal grilled chicken in creamy sauce, was my favourite. Their dessert of three small dishes was also amazing. What a gem! Will definitely be coming back here soon.
The Fish Cutlets were great and the Pork Vindaloo was amazing, really good rich sauce with a depth of flavours and lovely and hot, not the cooked from base and added chilli powder last minute kind of place! Really great meld of spices and heat. Dessert was nice too as well as great choice of draft lagers and ales. Price reasonable!
One of the better Indian restaurants I west London!. Just like home cooked dishes despite the limited menu, which is perhaps a good thing. Shared a lamb and chicken main course with Rotis and rice and it tasted fab. Got served by Raj Kapoors granddaughter apparently, in the friendly family restaurant where I will eat again I'm sure. Pricy but worth the money. Highly recommend it!!
Excellent food and friendly service. They also had a great wine list. It’s got a really nice, modern feel, and such a wonderful variety of authentic dishes. Will be back!
Always a pleasure and always tasty food. The staff are attentive and friendly and the food is great. Make sure you use the hidden door on the right to go into the wine shop next door for a post dinner bottle...
My husband and I have recently moved to Putney and discovered this great place! Food was fantastic, we especially loved Tawa Chops and Aloo Tikki which we ordered for starters. Service was polite and it was nice to dine in the terrace at the back on a warm evening. Another great benefit is that for a small fee they allow you to bring in any wine you choose from the next door wine place Glug, which we really liked. We will definitely come back to Ma Goa.
Best restaurant in Putney! We have bow visited twice and can't wait to go again (or order on deliveroo now we are entering the 2nd lockdown). The starters are amazing, the curry is probably the best I've ever eaten and the service is impeccable.
A definite must! I've tried a few dahi puris in London, this was the best thus far. Everything tasted fresh and flavourful. Service was great. I'll definitely be going back.
Update on teh below review. Ma Goa have called and explained their new cooking set up and the limitations they are facing. They were hugely apologetic and will be reviewing the cooking situation in the next few days anyway as they will be reopening. It clearly was a complete one off as I have been going to MG for years and it was so unlike their food. So rest assured all Putney locals, Ma Goa took this very seriously, refunded my order and I will be going back there again soon! We had, what I hope is, a one off unfortunate experience with a home order from Ma Goa on Sunday night. Sadly all of the curries were incredibly salty. I was shocked by the Murgh Makhini in particular which we couldn’t eat at all. We really struggled with the Palak Aloo and Nariyal curry also. We couldn’t finish any of the dishes. The salt content was so high it completely hid the spice and flavour of each dish. All I could taste was salt. I woke in the night from thirst despite drinking a lot of water after trying to eat the meal. It was very disappointing and such a surprise to be honest as Ma Goa is normally so, so tasty. But that meal was sub-standard for Ma Goa and for £50 it was a very expensive disappointment. It was akin to a basic bad curry house order, which Ma Goa has never been in my eyes. Even thier poppadum condiments weren’t the same delicious quality. I would urge Ma Goa to check their cooking/ingredients as this experience has made us think twice before we order again sadly.
I visited Ma Goa a few years ago and it was a very different place than now. It's much more lively and colourful, a little smaller (I believe they had two windows back then), but vibrant and buzzing. The food used to be pretty good and it's even better now: we were really surprised by the quality of the samosas, the cheese naan and all the chicken dishes we tried (particularly the murgh tikka).
This restaurant makes me sad; the reason being, I live in Oz and know it will be a long time before I get to go back. I went twice in three days. Sampled virtually everything in those two visits. Difficult to pick a winner, but as I ordered the tikka on both occasions, it would have to be that, although any of the other dishes I tried were stunnng. Please leave Putney and come to Perth. Brilliant.
Beautiful restaurant, gorgeous food, friendly staff! What more could you want? Oh...what about a fab wine shop 'GLUG' next door! Call in, fill your belly at Ma Goa then pop next door and stock up on the perfect wines to finish your evening in style!
Awesome meal every time, really nice people and I love their commitment to craft beers - especially when they had big wave on tap. Really fun, cool place.
If possible I would give them 6 stars 5 stars for the delicious food and an extra star for customer service beyond all expectations. Last night we used deliveroo for the first time to place our order and delivery to Barnes. It was all done very efficiently and within the allotted time a bag of food with a fantastic spicy aroma arrived at our doorstep. It was just after handing over a tip to the delivery guy, starting to unpack the various items that horror of horrors I realised that the poppadoms were missing!!!!!!!! What is a curry without poppadoms ? Realising I would get nowhere trying to contact deliveroo direct I phoned Ma Goa and explained our dilemma The very courteous manager said that they had given the driver 2 bags for us, so the missing 2nd bag contained the essential missing items. He said to leave it with him and he would come back to us within 10 mins . 10 minutes later there was a knock on the door and the manager himself , like a knight in shinning armour, Appeared With a bag of poppadoms & relishes. What customer service, beyond the call of duty, thank you Ps the food was amazing, pork vindaloo and the green chicken, wow,
Haven’t tried the restaurant yet, but as a takeaway it was incredible. Top marks to the samosas, some of the best we’ve ever had, and the biryani.
Absolutely loved it in here! The staff are warm and friendly, the atmosphere very relaxed and the food was incredible! It was my first visit but I can’t wait to visit again, thank you!
Great food! Great staff! Great prices! If you are around Putney, make sure you give a visit to this authentic Indian restaurant. It preserves the real taste of Indian food with a touch of Goan cuisine! I will visit again!
I've had four or five Indians in London (including a couple of renowned ones) and this is by far the best one. Don't get confused by the casual atmosphere of the venue, food is really top quality!
Our local little gem in Putney. Great food, friendly staff and the wine shop (Glug) next door has a great selection of some really good wines, cheese and nibbles.
Food here is very tasty. Not the typical Indian dishes, we really like the originality and the flavours. Good job with the redecorations too,it's nice and cosy
Not particularly cheap but outstandingly good Indian food. Tasty, authentic and original dishes served with aplomb. Excellent service and pleasant quirky surroundings. Much bigger than it looks from the street and genuinely atmospheric in the back. Plus (!) five draft Belgian beers. Does it get any better than this?
Had an excellent takeaway from here on Saturday and couldn't recommend it enough! The lamb chops we had as part of a starter were divine (sorry can't remember the actual name of them!) and we were raving about them the next day. A little bit different to usual Indian cuisine, but this is definitely a good thing!
Came on a Thursday night, not too busy (we had a table booked). The servers were lovely, really friendly and attentive and the food was amazing. We had 2 vegetable thalis and the samosas to share - a perfect amount of food, all really flavoursome with tender, perfectly cooked veggies, fluffy rice and delicious balanced spices. Great mix of hot, cool, sour and salt. Cute cosy setting. We had a beer flight and a cocktail as well, and the cost was fairly reasonable. Will love to come back!
I can’t believe that, after living in Putney for 3 years, I’ve only now found this place! If you’re after a cheap-and-cheerful curry house, perhaps not your place. The dishes here are so much better than that! Packed full of flavour, they’re probably the best I’ve tasted. The service is great all the staff are so attentive. Look forward to visiting more frequently!
Super friendly staff, casual and fuss-free atmosphere. Food offering is varied and every single dish we ordered was delicious. We particularly liked the smoked venison samosas, very tasty! Peshwari naan was also one of the best I've had, very subtle!
Had a lovely evening with my wife. We live around the corner and have been regular guests at Glug next door (the wine bar owner by the same people as Ma Goa), so we thought we'd give Ma Goa a try. The food has the intense flavours we love of Indian food, while clearly also having a modern twist. Beer and wine selection was incredible for a such as small restaurant
Best restaurant in Putney. The service is fantastic. The food amazing. I’ve just ordered on Deliveroo they didn’t have the wine I ordered but sent an alternative with a note explaining. It was so personal and lovely to read. What a fantastic place. Keep going your doing great. I’ll be eating here again and again.
The best modern Indian in Putney. I love the old Ma Goa but the recent changes to the decor and menu make this place even better. Great craft beers and the addition of Tapas style Indian food with a twist makes this a great all round experience
Cheap and cheerful Indian that offers a decent selection of very tasty curries and speciality dishes. Their two courses for ten pounds deal is very good value. Very good place to swing by if you want a quick, cheap and tasty meal.
Quirky, vibrant, colourful, and serves outstanding meals too. Magoa is all that and more. We ordered deconstructed Dahi Puri, Chola Poori, Akuri and dessert platter. The chola and breads are a must try - only available on Sunday Brunch! Service is warm and attentive. All in all we had a wonderful experience. Have a go at Goan fun!
Nice food, friendly staff, but I have got the feeling it wasn't as authentic as other places. Nevertheless very yummy, though. Liked the food there!
Overall we had a lovely meal. The curries we had were both delicious, although portions were a bit small and I expected a little more heat. mango chutney and naans were average and I remember these being really good in the past. Service was friendly and attentive.
Heard a lot about this place, so came all the way down from North London to try the experience and support a local bussiness but all I can say, avarage food and not very good service! We ordered Paneer pakora and samosas for starter. Pakora was very dry and oily! Samosas was good. For main we ordered lamb curry which was ok and chicken curry which was way too much spicy and the chicken was too dry! I ordered raita too, it was too sweet and seems like a mixture of mint sauce and yoghurt with cucumber pieces on top I asked the waiter to change it with mint yoghurt which was the same thing without cucumber!
I started going to Ma Goa about 12 years ago, it felt like a high end experience. It has had a rebrand (street) and new, smaller menu. The starters are great, from the poppadoms, to the prawns and to the lamb chops. But something goes wrong with the mains. Bland, bitter, dry meats whether its chicken (they should use thighs instead of breast), lamb or talapia (I cook talapia regularly, a sweet, tender fish) it's a bit of a chew. The wine list is limited too. Gone are the buttery, silky, curries of its previous incarnation. Not bad but not exceptional.
Food is ok,a nice variety offered, great for those that have not tasted authentic south Indian food. Find the curries were very much watered down and lacked taste. Rice was good though and service is excellent. Very pricey for what it was. Cocum in raynes park is much better...sorry!
This is outstanding food and I have been a very loyal customer for well over 10 years. I never have a bad meal and would recommend people to experiment and choose the wide variety of dishes rather than play it safe. The reason for the three star rating is because they’ve stopped doing their wonderful naan breads. I don’t believe the excuse that it’s good for the environment. Please reconsider.
Random last minute choice ended up to be a good experience. Good atmosphere and food. Seems like South Indian style rather than British Indian thus feels authentic. The crab which many recommended was not there as it’s a chefs special. The lamb Curry’s bit oily and salty and the sweet naan was very fragrant.
My lamb curry was very salty. The environment is quite noisy. The staff was quite pushy asking if we wanted sides, starters, drinks and more and more. I didn't enjoy my dinner there.
Expensive and relatively bad food quality. I have had much better Indian food in other restaurants. There was insufficient number of staff to serve customers and the place was not even half full! In addition it was cold and generally lacked a nice atmosphere.
Went yesterday and was disappointed. Service was a bit poor, forgot our rice and were a bit rude about it. The lamb curry was way too salty and I found the waiters made an effort to ignore you when trying to get the bill.
Many years ago (before you could submit reviews via Google) I had a shocking experience with this place. My partner at the time and myself ordered a delivery. The food seemed fine until my partner found a long black hair in her food...not great but she dealt with it and carried on eating her food. A moment later she came across something disgusting...it was an enormous dirty toenail. We can only assume some disgruntled member of staff wanted some fun...it was truly revolting! We complained but were offered nothing by way of compensation or an apology. To this day I still tell friends about this ghastly experience and despite having had some good nights there prior to this event I will never, ever, ever go anywhere near this place again.
Honestly, anyone claiming this is a good Indian has clearly never eaten authentic Indian food! Both of us thought our main dishes where very salty, mine was almost inedible for me personally. I ordered papadums for us and they came out drenched with a yogurt and a mango sauce over the top together which I thought was strange and meant I couldn't eat them as I hate mango sauce. Is just such a schoolboy error, done most probably to try to make it look fancy and justify being overpriced. I mean really, a papadum is supposed to be served with a seperate dip, crispy. Soak it in dressing before serving and they just get soggy that's just obvious. The quality of ingredients seemed good but was spoiled by the saltiness so that kind of became irrelevant and to my tastes everything was a bit bland. Then to top it off there was no hot water in the toilet which really annoyed me considering a meal for 2 was £80, I think they could have given customers that courtesy. Overall really disappointing overpriced food and not a good dining experience, sorry! *in response to owners reply: What you had was the opportunity to provide a good experience for me and you failed in many respects to do that. If I had expressed my dissatisfaction at the restaurant it would have further spoiled the evening for me and my guest and made a scene in public which I wanted to avoid that day. Your discurteous reply makes me certain you deserved the review, as does every other business I've reviewed positively or negatively as it based on the experience I had while spending the money I had to work hard to earn. I could have complained about the small tables, cramped space that resulted in a woman knocking my arm while eating and other things if I had wanted too! An enjoyable shopping experience will likely result in my repeat custom whilst a poor one won't and will possibly annoy me enough to tell others, that's the nature of business, I know this as a business owner myself!
DONT GO HERE. Front of house I arrived and the lady was trying to help me locate my table. All of a sudden some male staff interjects, blocks my way, and makes it as if there was never a reservation. Its a tiny restaurant. The staff should not act like night club bouncers. Waited +5-8 minutes to be allowed in. Food I dont understand how the chef ruined something as uncomplex as a paratha and Murgh. TOO SALTY! And to make things worse, there was a HUGE lump of salt in my food which i bit into. Impossible to eat. The paratha was dry and literally a naan dipped in oil. A Paratha is NOT just a naan dipped in oil paratha was also hard, perhaps been left out from someone elses meal. Who knows.. but what a shame. Service Awful, throughout the meal. The waitress was almost abrasive when serving. Did not feel welcome at all. Dessert As if the salty murgh was not bad enough. Icecream comes out, and the cone is BROKEN. This meant that the icecream was LEAKING while i was eating.
*review amended following response from owner - see end* Not very impressive "Indian". Have travelled extensively around India and this was a poor imitation. Food - especially the tarka daal - seriously oversalted. Plain rice pointlessly salted. Ordered a thali each. Pushing calling it that. 4 dishes one (salted) rice one (salted) salad and two side dishes. Small poppadom. Not exactly an all in one meal. When we flagged this the daal was too salty. It was returned watered down and reheated. We flagged this and that it was still too salty. were advised that could not be the case as everything was fresh and tomato had been added to absorb the salt *rolls eyes*. Cannot recommend. I note the rather hostile response from the owner subsequent to this original review. To be clear - I make time to write reviews, positive and negative, when I believe it merits it. This can easily be done in a couple of minutes when on public transport. Further, I said the daal was too salty (it was ludicrous) - I didn't ask for an unsalted daal. To say the staff did everything they could is a misrepresentation. They were brusque and more interested in selling the craft beer. However, the owner is accurate on one point - this is not the restaurant for me.
