Great little neighborhood restaurant and bar. Fun and casual atmosphere with a nice variety of menu selections. I've enjoyed everything I've ever ordered but my fav for the moment is their hamburger. The twice baked potato soup is excellent and perfect for these drizzly, cooler days. The staff is excellent - friendly and helpful, really seem to care about their customers and take pride in their job.

The food was great 👍🏼 highly recommended the fried zucchini and chicken fried chicken! Definitely will be back!

Back40 was is my go to for their chicken fried chicken with Jalapeño gravy! Yummmm 🤤! Their nachos are also a must have as they are individual chips with the cheese and fajita, etc on top. Service is always great I have zero complaints! :) 10/10

If you are reading this for a recommend place to eat you hit the jackpot for Lubbock. We were a group of 11 people so we saw and sampled quite a bit of the menu by all getting something different with several appetizers. The shrimp and cream cheese stuffed jalapenos wrapped in bacon was incredible. From the chicken fried steak to the club you can tell love went into the menu. Best onion rings I've had in a while to boot. Personally I had the steak fajita's and loved every bite. This is no stock photo I'm posting either! It was taken with my motor z and does not do it justice. One other person ordered the same fajita plate and the whole place was filled with Smokey sizzling beef! Portions are HUGE (chicken strips could feed 3) and the wait staff was friendly. A MUST stop if you are passing through or a regular stop to watch the game on a bunch of huge flat screens. We. Will. Be. Back!

Great place and friendly staff. Went there in the early evening on Friday and drinks were really reasonable. Well vodka drinks were $3.25 each. There are plenty of TVs to watch football. Staff was friendly. One of the managers came and spoke to us for a while. Good place none the less.

Wow. Where to start…knowing staffing shortages in town we were wary of going anywhere. Walked in and seated ourselves as per the sign. Greeted quickly and received our drinks just as quickly. Ordered queso for appetizer, REALLY good! And we all love queso! Each dish ordered (grilled ck w/zucchini, club sandwich, nachos, quesadilla) were all GREAT. There was seasoning on the chicken and veggies, Club had fresh ingredients..just awesome. We haven’t been here in years so we were very skeptical. We will be back!!

Service was terrible , waited 20 minutes for a refill , so I just went to the bar. Food came out 45 minutes ago but have only seen my waitress 1 time IN 45 MINUTES!!! Good note: food was excellent! Update : 1 week later , the mangers called and apologized for last weeks situation. Was very impressed with their professionalism and eager to make right of the situation I had ! Very pleased and will be visiting the back 40 very soon ! Thanks Troy for all you have done , more thank I expected ! It's business like this one that makes Lubbock great !

Past this place several times while in town but never stopped till today. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, DELICIOUS FOOD! !! Well worth the hour drive to get here!! Will be coming back here all the time!!! Owner greats you and is busy running around making sure things run right.

first time here and i had a great experience, our server was very attentive we never had to ask for refills she checked up on us often. she was probably the best server ive had in a while i didnt get her name though. i got the chicken strips with mac and cheese and the potatoes it was all perfect. my mom got the nachos and her food was a little too overdone we definitely wouldn’t recommend the nachos but personally my food was all good no problems :)

We absolutely love this place! We always try to plan a trip to/through Lubbock to include an overnight on a Thursday, so we can catch Joe & Lori karaoke and the burger special. The food and service is great, and the Back 40 has an amazing group of friendly regulars that are fun to hang out with.

Went in mid afternoon after work. They weren't busy. Sat at the bar. Everything was prompt and accurate. Service was polite and engaging and treated us like we were regulars.

We had a friend of ours tell us that they had one of the best chicken fried steaks in town. We decided to go check it our for ourselves. It just happened to be on a night when TTU men were playing in the NCAA tournament. It was pretty busy, but not crazy or loud. We were greeted and seated in a timely manner. We knew we were going to have the CFS. Our waitress was very good and very friendly. She took great care of us. We ordered and the food was out in a short time. We had the mashed potatoes and fried okra. We both agreed it was all very good. We would certainly be back and try other menu options based on this visit. If you haven't tried the chicken fried steak, go give it a try.

A friend and I decided to try here for Saturday lunch. Not busy at all. We had the chips, salsa and queso as an appetizer. The salsa had a nice kick and the queso was a blanco (white cheese) both had good flavor. The chips were just on the beginning side of stale but not such that warranted sending back. My friend had the fajitas she said they had a good flavor. They do not come with rice or beans which my friend was fine with. I believe the set up was guacamole, pico and sour cream. The tortillas looked homemade and she said they were really good. I had the Santa Fe Chicken. The chicken was very tender and had a wonderful grilled flavor. The portion size for both of our meals was definitely shareable.

The food was great the Texas firecrackers were spicy but so good. I had the chicken fry steak with jalapeño gravy it was wonderful I highly recommend . I'm giving 4 stars because there was no menu for bar drinks and our waitress was not very knowledgeable, or helpful when asked questions about what drinks they offered.

My chicken fried steak was good and the sides but the loaded potato skins had burnt bacon and the toast was a little burnt. The service was good. I'd give it another try hopefully it will be just a little better. Looks like a cool place to get a drink.

I had a burger and it was the best for a burger at this price point! It tasted like it came right off the grill and not a kitchen flat top! Very impressed! My wife had the chicken strip meal and talk about a HUGE portion! Everyone in our group was very happy with their meals as well! Friendly service!

Back 40 makes good potato skins. Green onions, bacon, cheese and they leave a decent amount of potato in em. 8 for 12 bucks. They are served with sour cream and ranch. I guess ranch is popular. Next time I'm gonna ask for 2 sides of sour cream instead

I had their grilled chicken with veggies and a salad. It was sooo good. I'll definitely eat here again. A coworker and I went during lunch. I like that there aren't many options but then again, there weren't many "healthy food" options, but what we did have was great. Can't wait til my next meal there.

Awesome atmosphere during game days! Excellent food, everything was delicious! Great place to grab a drink and watch a game, also family friendly with kids menus and high chairs. Clean and organized space. Most everything on the menu is $10+, however portion size is reasonable for the price. Wait staff was friendly, but slow to get around (extra busy because TTU vs KU Basketball game during last visit).

Recommended. The burger I received was not, “greasy”. The fries were memorable and rivaled the burger. The sweet tea was slightly off but did not seem to include (aspartame) ‘Sweet and Low’. The employee that waited on my table was prompt, kind, and aware of the entire section that was in need. It is located around good views and is easily accessible for handicaps and light trucks with trailers. I do not recall the outdoor seating to have adequate shade suitable for 100F summer days. It does, however, include a child retention fence. The concealed kitchen, visually appears disorganized and dirty but during and after consumption of the product, it was evident this had little to no relevance.

Pretty decent food, chicken strips and burgers are good. Whiskey Wednesday has drink specials and live music, which was awesome. The wine was a step above typical house wine, which is always a plus, especially for a sports bar.

We had a great time at Bar 40 Grill! Our waitress Beth was great and made excellent suggestions on drinks. The food was pretty good and we could hear each other talk. It was a nice relaxed environment and we will be back for Karaoke!

Hard to get the attention of wait staff, but they were busy. Took a few minutes just to be seated. Got the chicken special, which was tasty. The glassware needs to be beer-clean (it wasn't).

Nice little bar & grill. Great specials. Food was good, but choices were limiting. Check it out for a drink and dinner special combo on Monday and Tuesday that will leave you full, satisfied and with cash left in your wallet.

I had lunch there with a few people. I know they had been there about 30 minutes before I arrived. And probably took the waiter another 30 minutes or more before he even came to see if we were ready to order. Yes I know there was only 1 person waiting tables but to be honest I had to call him over just to take our order, then to have him tell us that he was helping someone else😑. This is absolutely NOT a bad review. The food was good. I'll go back because I just bet it was just one of them crazy days😉 I'll make sure they don't know who I am just to see how my second time around goes 🤭🙃

The atmosphere and service were great. The party I was with had the steak fingers and chicken fry; they had no complaints and said it was great. I had a burger, and that is my only critique: the patty was not fresh; it was more like the pre-made ones you buy. That would be my only complaint; everything else was very good. The party I was with even complimented the drinks they had. I would definitely recommend it, just maybe not the burger. This is not a bash at all, just being honest.

My first time to back 40 grill. I had the chicken tenders plate with jalapeño cream gravy and it was really delicious! The atmosphere was a little loud and the front door let in quite a chilly breeze, but other than that, it was a very nice experience. My friend had the fried fish and it was also very good.

Stopped in on a Thursday night and the place was jumping for karaoke night. It’s more of a country and western vibe but the DJ does try to mix it up with some other genre’s of music. The bartenders were good and the food was good as well. I would recommend coming here if your into C&W.

Went for a $58 lunch. Steak sandwich breaded. Hard to chew. Mashed potatoes no flavor. Processed lunch meat ham and Turkey on sandwich. Tasted the quac on the second half of sandwich. Only thing we liked are the onion rings whigh we paid $3 for in addition to the order. Got to try something else there

My bacon bleu cheese burger was excellent, as were the Texas firecrackers. The salad was just some iceberg lettuce with carrots and cheese. Our server was friendly and attentive. So, why only 3 stars? The noise. They had a live band that compensated for their mediocre talent with sheer volume. This made table conversion impossible. You could only speak to one person at a time because you had to lean and scream in their ear. Then repeat yourself by screaming into the ear of the next person at your table. What started as an enjoyable evening out ended with extreme frustration. Tip: Choose a table on the patio if there is a band playing inside. You'll not miss a note of the performance while still being able to enjoy the company of your dinner companions.

Food was mediocre at best. Some of the servings were small. For example the chicken fried steak was a good size but they put like an half an ice cream scoop worth of mashed potatoes. Then the potato skins appetizer had maybe a slice worth of bacon on the entire plate.

Everything tasted good. Waitress was the only employee visible to the dining area. Paid over $60 for lunch for three of us and all of us are hungry enough we’re contemplating stopping for fast food on the way home. You can’t charge over $20 a person and serve portions that leave people hungry in Lubbock, TX. I can spend $20 less and feed my family so much that they leave food on their plates and that food can be spectacular within a 5 mile radius of this restaurant. I feel absolutely taken advantage of. Will not be back.

Service was great, food was ok and more expensive than I'd pay for quality. We were there for an early dinner and it wasn't too loud. However, it showed up when I looked up "steak" and there were exactly 2 steak options on the menu, one sirloin and one chopped. My fajita salad was ok, but more like a big version of what I'd expect from a house salad -- iceberg included. Overall, not bad. But not quite great either. If you're looking for a bar, this place looks like it'd be a good one. They do have live music after 8!

Took us about an hour to get a table. We just went in to eat. And by the time we got a table, they had charged us five dollars a piece cover charge. We weren't even there for the music or anything. We just wanted to eat and it took him so long to get us to a table that we had to pay the cover charge. They added it to our check.

Food was okay but not very well seasoned. Very bland. Service was okay but not the best waitress would walk by multiple times leaving the drinks empty. Had to ask multiple times even when leaving the empty cup on the side of the table visible. As far as the restaurant they have a touch tunes box where you can play music but you’re not allowed to play anything besides country. They have all other genres blocked so that was a bit of a let down. Guess you could say it’s not a very inclusive place. Wouldn’t really recommend.

Went for dinner and drinks... ordered chicken fried steak with mashed potatoes and okra... sorry to say the cfs was way over cooked was hard and potatoes were at best warm to to touch the Okra was the only thing hot on the plate and also order the gizzards but unfortunately they had so much batter that u could barely get to the gizzards and when u did they were the smallest and hardest thing to eat... my son just gave up on them and took them apart to see so much batter...

The food is decent, drinks are a little high, but the music is so loud you can't talk to the person next to you. It's great to have live music, don't get me wrong, but it was so loud I couldn't concentrate on eating or the convorsation I was attempting to have. Turn it down!

Our first time in and we won't be back. We stood in the front for a couple of minutes before anyone ever greeted us to let us know to seat ourselves. My husband's order came out wrong and the amount of sweet potato fries, that we were charged $2.99 extra for, was a very small portion. Our server never came to refill our drinks. We weren't having any alcohol , but we couldn't help but notice that all the tables that were received the best service.

Maybe we just came on an off day but it was expensive and the quality of the food did not meet the price. I got the shrimp tacos and the avocado slices that came with it were brown. I don’t think you should serve someone that, I had to take them off. The loaded potato skins were also overcooked. We were also brought the ticket super soon, after eating for only about 10 minutes. Other people have good reviews so maybe this was just an off day for the crew, but I don’t think it was great quality or service for the person who made our food. Also our waitress checked on another table 3 times and ignored us even though we had asked for a to go box.

Waited over an hour and a half for our food just for it to be completely burnt and terrible when it came out. My husbands chicken was burned entirely, my steak finger basket was COLD, and my daughters burger was cold in the middle. Won't be coming back and I don't recommend you do either.

This is obviously a place that has “regulars” because unless you’re a person they are in this clique with, don’t expect to be waited on like they were grateful you came out for dinner— we definitely didn’t feel as if we were appreciated customers— because we didn’t know anyone there. The waitress was more than slow and didn’t even pay attention to what you were ordering— it’s like she was aggravated that we had the nerve to show up and wanted to eat… the food wasn’t great either— it was no more than average at best— the appetizers and food were both cold. We left as soon as we were half way done and just asked for a doggie bag. I ALWAYS give great tips and my reviews are typically good if not great; when I review on Google. Not this time. I would NEVER recommend this place to anyone and we certainly won’t be back.

I was expecting a food place with a bar, not a bar with food. It was a Friday and there was a 5 cover for entertainment, not a big deal…..but they made it a big deal. In the middle of my meal, a member of staff, not my wait person, specifically and personally told me there was a 5 cover. About 15 minutes earlier the female staff member with a back 40 shirt on was seated at the bar drinking shots and goading another patron to get me to move to the bar seat next to him. I thought it was weird and I told them I was good where I was……eating my dinner at the time. It seemed deliberate and rude that she mentioned with some extra attitude that they would be adding a 5 cover charge to my bill if I didn’t leave in 30 minutes. Santa Fe chicken, mashed potatoes and a salad. Meh, pretty bland and definitely not worth the hassle. I will not be “back“.

Ordered 2 of the Damn Good Chicken Fry’s, got all the way across town to my hotel room & I have this?? I call & ask if my order was messed up and they said “Ya. They put it in wrong. Sorry bout that.” Customer service still goes a long ways, just don’t understand paying for something I didn’t want to eat in the first place. Do better.

We arrived at approximately 11:55. Hostess told us to seat ourselves, so we went to the patio, where only one other table was occupied. A server was there at the time. Several minutes later, I went inside to get menus. The server returned to the other table then left again. Finally, at 12:10 we left. Note to management, you rarely get a second chance to make a first impression.

The food wasn't very good at all. For starters the fried zucchini you only get six little bitty strips for $10 and it had no flavor whatsoever I had the chicken fried steak with jalapeno gravy that didn't taste like jalapeno the gravy was Bland. The only good thing I can say was that the waitress was nice and the atmosphere was good other than that don't waste your money.

Girl at bar played with her hair and touched plates, never washed her hands. The dishes that came with our appetizer were dirty, with food still stuck on them, most tables were dirty, I would not be interested in returning. For such a nice location you would think they would keep it clean. The outside area looked cleaner than the inside. After weeks of planning this visit I was truly disappointed.

I’m not sure where to even start! In a place where there were hardly any other people there eating, we sat for over 30 mins waiting on even an appetizer to come out. We finally went up to the bar and ordered more drinks for ourselves, with very little attention from the server. Once food arrived, it was cold, overpriced, and mediocre at best. And the kicker… they were kind enough to add a 25% gratuity, for service that absolutely did not deserve anywhere near that. Easy to see why they had an empty dining room at lunch hour. Won’t be back!

I used to love this place but the last 3 times coming here has been awful. Food is cold, never get checked back on from the server, drinks run dry, and it's impossible to get any service. This place has changed their draft beers and menu for the worse! I love their fries but don't think I'll ever come back. Just sad to watch this happen over the years to a good place.

When we walked in, we were told to sit anywhere and then it took the same girl at least 8 minutes to bring us menus. Ordered drinks and then didn’t see her again for at least 10 minutes. The chips were going stale and the queso didn’t match the menu description. Ordered the chicken fried chicken with a premium upcharge for Mac and cheese as well as a chicken fried steak with Mac and cheese. The only things that were warm on the plates were the steak and chicken. The Mac and cheese was definitely not homemade or worth the price increase. The food was bland as well and overpriced. It was our first and last time going and didn’t try to bring anything to the waitress because she’d disappear for long stretches of time.

So if I asked the food server specifically if we could get a burger cooked medium and they say yes.. But it comes out so well done like a hockey puck....... Wouldn't you think when you informed the waitress they would do something. I didn't want another one. I just wanted you to take it away.. a manager visit would have been nice but she just ignored the fact that the meal was inedible. We won't ever go back to this restaurant. First time here trying it with friends and it was uneventful and customer service was lacking. Don't order drinks. Watered down. Best part of the meal was the salad I added to the dinner for an up charge.

Came here 6/29 place was not busy at all, but definitely not clean! I would not eat here even if it was free!! From the looks of it they did not clean from the previous night! Restrooms were dirty, toilet paper overflowing on the floor. Trash under all the tables. I watched someone’s order just sit at the window a good 10 minutes while the waitress was no where to be found. Not sure if she was the source of the marijuana smell seeping throw the building. Been here before but today the place was disgusting!

This place was one of my favorite places to go and the previous owners were outstanding. The previous owner one year for Veterans Day got custom beer mugs made for 100 veterans in Lubbock and I was one of the lucky ones to have this made for me. We were allowed to leave our mugs there and when we showed up to have a drink we just had to request to use our personalized mug. Well long story short I went a couple days ago to have a beer in my mug and when I requested it I was told they can’t do it, then the new owner said to me “ what do you want me to do?” I said please find the mug and I was told to call back the next day. I called and was told the mug along with another group had broke due to a shelve breaking but that to me didn’t sound right. I called and then went up there to be told the owner more than likely won’t replace it and this was after I was standing at the bar for about 3 minutes while looking at the staff just staring at me. Nobody wanted to talk to me and after giving all my information I feel the establishment was very rude to me and didn’t really want to hear it honestly. The female bartender looked at me and said we have one of our veterans mug’s here but he comes in every day, after that statement I told her that’s great but I’m not an alcoholic so sorry I don’t come in but often. I know this mug will not be replaced and honestly it seems to me they don’t care and it’s not there problem. This place has gone down hill since the old owners.

Very disappointed. Had takeout and my chicken fried steak and fries looked and tasted like they were made yesterday. Also had soup that was cold. I arrived to pick it up before it was ready! I dine in often and it is always good. Please take pride in your togo orders!

We walked in and were not greeted. When we mentioned we had a party of four, the hostess immediately said, “I don’t have any seats and can’t seat you.” There was no effort to suggest a wait time, offer alternatives, or even acknowledge us in a welcoming way. She simply looked at us as if she wanted us to leave. It was especially disappointing because we had been looking forward to trying this place and finally made the time to come. A simple greeting, explanation, or even basic courtesy would have made a big difference in the experience.

My parents live pretty close to this place so we usually get takeout when we go see them. Every time we order it comes out wrong. This time we ordered two burgers, the baked potato skins, and chicken fajitas. They didn’t give us a single condiment (no hot sauce, guacamole, or sour cream even though we ordered it) and gave us regular fries instead of sweet potato (a three dollar up charge) even though we ordered and got charged for sweet potato. Their food is okay but we just won’t be going back - tired of paying for things we don’t get.

We typically go to the Back 40 for their OilFire Old Fashions and Espresso Martinis while grabbing dinner a few times a month. Today we ordered dinner via DoorDash. I must say the food was exceptionally unpalatable. The cheese sticks had no cheese and the fried hollow shell tasted burnt. The steak fingers too tasted like they were burnt so I can only assume they were all cooked in the same grease. Both cobblers were just as disgusting. I’m sorry to say I’ll never frequent this establishment again.

Went over the weekend, was excited because the food looked so good and price was great. Walked in and immediately felt unwelcome. We were a large-sigh group of less than 10, was told we could sit anywhere but had to put the tables together ourselves. Place was not even busy, slight help would have been great. Bartender (brunette girl) just stared no smile or anything, looked mad. Waitress (blonde girl) did the same. Waitress did warm up somewhat, but not very welcoming at all. Also food came out one by one over the course of maybe 15mins. Overall just a horrible and unpleasant experience.

Usually we enjoy coming here but today was a different experience The owner wasn’t working which explains why the employees were sitting & laying in a booth. All employees were on their phones all the time. Bartender was enjoying conversation with her two friends. The draft ultra was flat, had a funky taste. Hamburger was overcooked & dry. Onion rings were grease. It’s sad young adults do not take pride in where they work & receive a paycheck. They definitely were not earning their wage today.
