Visited twice from St Louis while in town on the 4th of July week. Absolutely worth every penny and truly delicious 😋 Will be back when I visit Dallas Metro again!
What a great place. Had a very nice breakfast. Food was hot, tasty, and the service was friendly. Very clean inside and looks almost new. Our family will be back
Finally a good home cooking restaurant In Mesquite! I've been hearing good things about it since they opened from my parents and friends at work and been seeing a lot of cars parked there when I pass by. Until yesterday morning I went with my Dad for the first time. The place is nice and clean, the manager and staff are all very nice and the plates all look really good! Their dishes are all good old fashion country American meals and some Mexican dishes, breakfast served until 3pm, and they have the best made Texas iced tea! So far I had a Mexican breakfast: huevos con chorizo with diced potatoes and corn tortillas- great brunch plate! Next time I will try their chicken fried steak!
Very fast service for a restaurant that doesn't serve fast food. You can get a Rib Eye steak cooked on a real charcoal grill in the morning and breakfast in the afternoon if that's what you want! My favorite waiter is Raul!
6/01/22 We had great service and awesome food. We both had Chopped Sirloin with grilled onions, mashed potatoes and brown gravy. A nice fresh salad, warm yeast rolls and sweet tea. A polite Young lady waited on us. We had a nice big lunch for our anniversary 🌻
First time eating here, the only complaint is why when I type "places to eat near me" this place has never come up. My new favorite place to eat.
Until this visit, I had not been to The Bull's Pen Cafe since they moved from their previous location in Sunnyvale. The location was clean, our waitress was attentive, and accommodated a larger table for our group of six. The patty melt was great and the servings were generous.
Excellent hometown country cookin! Wonderful friendly service.
Mesquite old timer's best kept secret. Place is very clean. Waitress Mariana was very polite helpful and attentive. Portion sizes are pretty large and food very good. Good value for money, nice staff, clean place.
I've been a hand full of times here and not one time have I been disappointed. Everything is always great!
Went with my neighbor for lunch. I had chicken fried steak from the lunch menu with mashed potatoes, black eyed peas and Mac n cheese. I RATE IT A 10/10. Sweet tea was delicious and waitress made sure my glass stayed fulled. When you leave the restaurant to the left of the exit door there is a rack of bibles donated by a local church for you to take one when u leave if u wish. Great place to eat all around
Decent place for lunch. Clean, bright. Our waitress Liz was super friendly but not overbearing. Dasterdly dangerous chocolate cake that practically put us into a sugar coma!!!😁 Excellent burger and oodles of stuff I want to go back for.
Love breakfast at this restaurant! Their home baked biscuits are so flaky. We ordered the ham which was thick cut and delicious. Service is attentive. The servers and management at the Mesquite location is top notch!
Delicious meals. Rice fully cooked, fluffy, flavorful makes you crave the rest of your meal. Service is excellent, very helpful, keeps refilling the tea cup. Place looks like a country eatery, they cater to every pallete. Enjoy.
Very good food and very good service our 1st time going and we will return hours are 6am to 3pm mon-sat closed sundays
Revised as of 6-2-2020. I want to say the Ladies Nora and Laura take care of me and are friendly. I see the wife and son (owners) and never say hello, thank you or anything. Very disappointing. Waitstaff and cooks 5 stars Honestly when it was on hwy 80 the food was ok. Not sure if anything changed other than the location but breakfast is ALWAYS GOOD now. Eggs are cooked they way I like them each time and the staff is friendly.
I love this place. Such an amazing place to eat for an amazing price. Large portions and delicious food. I’ve tried different dishes, the various times that I’ve come and they have not disappointed. My go to is the chicken fried chicken. The only slight downfall is how early they close. They tend to be busy during the lunch hour on weekdays and mostly all day Saturday. However, there’s typically not a long wait to be seated. Staff is friendly. The food is not authentic Mexican , so although they offer fajitas , expect a Tex-Mex flavor to their food options.
Nice restaurant family staff good food affordable prices
I absolutely love this place. The decor reminds me of a large hometown diner. Food was awesome. The food presentations were attractive and equally delicious. To make a five star rating our server was wonderful as well, prompt personable and helpful. My daughter and I are new to this area we've found a favorite! Oh I almost forgot the prices are reasonable.
It had been a minute since I had dined there. So when my best friend who also works for me was in town visiting, I wanted to take him someplace better and one of a kind. Breakfast or lunch, didn't disappoint. So close to the house, I will have to bring the wife next time.
Had the Santa Fe chicken with rice and okra.... amazing fresh food. The service was fantastic. The country music was playing softly so you could actually hear the conversation at your table. I'm looking forward to returning soon!
The service was a little slow on my visit but it wasn't slow enough to deter me from coming back. Took my lovely wife here to enjoy the breakfast here and when you go it's pretty easy to decide what you should get. We both went with the chicken fried steak and let me tell you... it did NOT disappoint at all! The food was so delicious and hit the spot. Off the food alone this place gets the five star rating from myself!
First time here for breakfast, and did not disappoint. Food is good, portions are big so come with an appetite. Our waitress was very nice. Clean and family oriented. Definitely coming back
Ana provided top-tier service from start to finish! She was attentive, friendly, and made sure everything was perfect throughout my visit. Her professionalism and warm personality created a welcoming atmosphere, making the experience even more enjoyable. She anticipated needs before I even had to ask and handled everything with a smile. If you're looking for excellent service, Ana is the one to ask for! Highly recommend!
They have a medium-sized menus, and I ordered an appetizer for my meal. Loaded potato skins it had 5 halved potatoes on it served with sour cream. They were delicious. And it was just the right amount for lunch.
The steak soup is a must. I've never had a bad plate here.
We went at a slow time during the day so the service was perfect. Food price was just a little too high in my opinion but the food was very tasty. We had the chicken-fried steak which was thick and large and I had the chicken fried chicken. In general food was cooked perfectly with decent flavor. We will try steaks next time we come in. Yep, we will come back.
Hispanic hostess very sweet, nice, friendly, very helpful. Service is awesome not to mention the food is very delicious very homemade, bathrooms very clean smell nice. It was my first time there. I will be coming back.
“Absolutely loved this place! I was very impressed with how clean and well-kept everything is inside. The breakfast tacos and pancakes were so good — fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with care. You can tell they really pay attention to quality. I’ll definitely be a regular from now on!”
#1 Chicken Fried Steak-Breakfast- Desserts- tried the steak soup OMG! I will go just for that. No matter how crowded they are I've never had to wait long and always receive the best service ever. Maybe the best restaurant experience in north Texas
Excellent old fashioned Cafe, hitch your ride out front and enjoy some good Texas cuisine. Very reasonable priced Lunch, my Chicken Fried Steak came with salad, real mashed potatoes, green beans with rolls and gravy! Coffee was great, I couldn’t get enough and took some more to go. Clean and friendly atmosphere, bathrooms were clean and sanitized, the tile took me back to the seventies 😂I will return for some of the breakfast dishes and more of the amazing coffee.
Very attentive service provided during our recent visit for breakfast. They have a variety of American breakfast 🍳🥞 items as well as some Tex-Mex items such as breakfast tacos 🌮. The food was great tasting and fresh. The establishment is very clean and welcoming. Highly recommend this place for breakfast or brunch!
First time customer, I was not disappointed. Customer service was great and the breakfast was spot on. I will definitely be back.
Had a great experience. All the food I had was wonderful. Great place for breakfast.
Not a very large selection for breakfast. Had the #4 which comes with 2 eggs, hasbrowns, your choice of bacon, ham, or sausage and 2 pancakes. I had the bacon which was really good they were 3 large thick slices and very crispy. I also asked for a side of sausage and they only serve sausage patties but it was one large very meaty patty. Pancakes were typical size like you find at any restaurant and were very good, they had a good sweet taste to them. I gave restaurant a 4 star rating because of the small breakfast selection and because the waitress forgot to bring us our condiments. It was our first time there but we decided that we would definitely go back.
Looks can be deceiving…. The outside of the place doesn’t look all that appealing but it’s extremely clean and well organized. On the inside, service was spot on. Had the #4 two eggs two bacon two pancakes hashbrowns. Everything was great …hashbrowns perfect! I said everything was great the bacon was dry and brittle should’ve got the ham. I would definitely do breakfast here again.
My husband and I were a bit skeptical after reading all the reviews. We decided to try it out and we enjoyed our meals. It was a bit pricey but food and service was good.
Went for lunch. Wasnt busy when we arrived. Was set down quickly and had pur drinks arrive shortly after taken. Unfortunately did not have one of our preferred drink so had to get water. Place our food order for chicken fried steak with yams, mash potatoes, and salad, and on order of the chicken fried chicken with mash potatoes, peaches, and a salad. Simple salad with some tomatos and preferred dressing, was quite good. Main plates came out shortly after and my chicken was really well seasoned but the steak needed a bit more, and cooked to perfection. The mash potatoes, we both thought, were not on the freshes side, but still taste nice with a bit more salt and pepper. I did not try the yams but was told they were well seasoned, sweet, and tender. The peaches were from a can so you know they were fresh and good, and yes can/frozen fruits/vegs are usually fresher then open fruits/veg because they are canned/frozen at peak freshness. Service was straight forward and nice. Would definitely recommend trying out.
This location is great but the waiter I had seemed to not listen when it comes to orders. He would mess basic things up (Drink orders, side choices) and seemed uncaring. Foods great though for the price!
Just moved into Mesquite from Sunnyvale with no change in Ownership, Management, Floor Supervisor and Grill Chief as far as we could tell in our food. Excellent as always. Daily Lunch Specials. Food runs from American to Mexican.
Great place! I loved my baked sweet potato and the rest of the meal was just as good. I had the chopped steak and I could tell it was really chopped sirloin and not just hamburger. Everyone else enjoyed their selections as well. They had the meatloaf and the chicken fried chicken. Portions were quite generous and shareable, and the prices are good value. Good service. Thank you for a great meal experience!
Food is good, prices are fair. When we first started going there, the wait staff was friendly and very attentive. Now that we are "regulars" it seems like that eagerness has worn off. I know people have off days and it can be extra busy, but if I can see you walk by 3 or 4 times with nothing in your hands, then you have time to check on us.
We often go there for breakfast. The food is good, the portions that give on your plates is a lot, and the service is great! We have special request with our orders, like soft scrambled eggs with jalapenos, etc. After our second visit the waitress knew all of our orders with adjustments, which was very impressionable to us. 🤗🤗🤗
The sweet tea is here AWESOME!!! The food wasn't bad, but the mac and cheese could have been better. The chicken fried chicken was delicious and fried to perfection. MY SO had a sirloin steak that he thought was okay enough for a café.
Always great to stop in and grab a coffee and breakfast at this gem!
Clean restaurant with a good breakfast. Staff was well attentive. Enjoyable for a friendly breakfast to allow for good fellowship.
We had a small birthday party today for my mother-in-law with a group of 9 people and were taking good care of. The food was good. The price was fair. The restaurant was clean and service was good. I did not give 5 stars because it was not over the top great but it was good. I did make the reservation for a birthday party and they did not do anything special to recognize that but they did serve us a decent meal.
My husband had a cesar salad and salmon which he loved. I had a burger which I would not rate high. Soup had a Chile powder or ? Which I did not like. Then I had the burger. Very good service.
Everything was good except the the Mac and cheese. The service was great and the place was super clean. I will definitely be back. I had the chicken fried chicken, mashed potatoes and the wackaroni and cheese. It just didn't have much flavor nor was the cheese sauce good. The rolls were super fresh and hot. Can't wait to try the breakfast, which is served till 3 (I think)
Great for breakfast. Good biscuits and gravy. Decent chicken fried steak.
The customer service here is awesome!! The waitress Angeles is always cheerful and on top of her game, but then again all waitresses and waiters are very friendly. My wife and I enjoy going here for breakfast and lunch. Enjoy this place very much. Would recommend to visit a least once.
Great service! Our server walked by several times to check on us and freshen up our coffee. The only reason I couldn't give 5 stars was because on the pantheon of chicken fried steak I've had better. The chicken fried steak was tough, but it might be great to another person's palette just not mine. It is however a great place to eat. Very clean. I say try it for yourself.
It was 2nd visit there and again, it was amazingly delicious. Ya need to try the steak soup!!! The portion are generous. The service is above and beyond expectations.
I had really high hopes for this place.... But the taste of the food just wasn't there. The staff is plentiful and pleasant. The restaurant is clean and comfy. The restroom was spotless. The food tasted as though it came from a can, box, or freezer. Then reheated in the microwave.
Friendly atmosphere. Had bacon, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, coffee, orange juice. Couldn't eat bacon, very tough. Took home for dog. Biscuits and gravy, not good. Poor substitute. Biscuits, not real biscuits, factory made. Gravy water and flour, no taste. Couldn't get refill on coffee untill check brought, then offered refill. Not worth $16.21. might or might not be back.
Our lunch was good, service just okay and the Ranch Dressing was more like Ranch soup, it was terrible. Tried to let the waitress know but she was more interested in the table behind us.
Lil pricey 3 people $56. we all had chicken fried steaks. The steaks was good but the breading was nothing to write home about. Otherwise service was good
I had the chicken fried steak here. There was nothing wrong with it, but it didn't stand out among the rest of the competition. The rolls that came with it were fairly cold upon delivery.
Air conditioning set to 72 degree and it was so cold at 9 am ; but the staff wouldn’t adjust the temperature
Nice place. Super clean. The waiter was really good. The food was good. It wasn't super great but it was good solid comfort food. The chocolate cake was amazing!
The steak Angus by any other name is still The Steak Angus only not as cute a name. And jot as good food. Save your time and taste buds and go some other place for a steak or breakfast. These are not chefs and may have had lessons from a fast food popular place. Wait staff didn't offer a n y thing close to happy greeting. Only a forced smile and a point to go there.
Had to locate waiter to get my change back after a 20 percent tip was already included on the tab
Mediocre food and the service was not great either.
My first time there. Parking lot was nearly full. I was excited after 6 day no meat fast....... Very busy so I get it.... service was slow. Ordered Bulls Pen cheeseburger.... all the way... server asked mustard or mayo? I said both please.... came with mayo only. Burger meat was plenty big but was very bland. Not high quality. Fries were avg at best. I'm sure that other menu choices are good..... lots of people there, but I was pretty disappointed.
The fried shrimp is overcooked and has no flavor. Was very hard to chew cut my gums on them. Do not recommend the shrimp fried at all.
We ate lunch there today. I ordered a club sandwich. The sandwich on the menu stated ham, turkey, bacon, cheese with lettuce, tomato. No turkey no bacon too much lettuce. The fries on menu stated home cut fries. They looked and tasted like frozen fries. The waitress waited on the couple that came in after us. The coffee cup had lipstick stain on it. One and done.
Its too cold in there, music is tad too loud to talk. One man waiter has never been pleasant. And when my 90 yr old mother said she wanted her change, he rolled his eyes! Her and my sister go there often. Food is decent. Chkn fried steak is too tough, bread tasted old and reheated. I used tobe a waitress so I get it, BUT never have attitude with customers
Served everyone with coffee but us.we let it go 1st time 2n'd time same thing.just looked at us and went right on by. Had to flag him down.Food was good but coffee was way out of line. We will not be comeing back.
As someone else mentioned, there is a hint of racism here. Most of my bad review is directed at the poor uppity attitude of our young waitress. The food is overall pretty tasty but they don't salt it enough. Also one of our items did not match the menu description and the waitress didn't seem to care nor offer a discount for their mistake.
Beware of ever trying to bring a large group to this establishment. Owner is not accommodating and rather recommended our party of around 30 or so to have our breakfast at Martinez Restaurant down the road. For the past 3 Saturdays we have been coming here for breakfast, we have enjoyed the service and food, it’s been remotely smooth, and that’s with one server, who has done an excellent job. However, today the owner came by and told our group that his usual customers have complained of the fact that their normal seating is thrown off. Because of this minor inconvenience, the owner has steered away a large customer base, and what any restaurant would see as large profit for the weekend. So sad, that the owner did not consider our group at all. We will not be returning here.
First time here, but sadly likely the last. The food and atmosphere were good, but the billing experience made us uncomfortable. We ordered a sirloin and asked for a bit more grease—nothing major. For some reason, our waitress upgraded the price to a ribeye without telling us. We had no idea that asking for extra grease meant paying for a completely different cut. This should have been communicated clearly
Worst customer service ever!! The server named Mariana was so rude! I went there with my family for breakfast, I wish I didn't!! Mariana was very disrespectful and came with her bad attitude! I would give zero star if I could! Stay away from this place! I wouldn't eat for free!!!!
I ordered a hamburger which was $9 does not come with the fries. waitress brought my hamburger out there and half of the meat was missing, she takes my plate back to the kitchen and then comes back out and says the cook wants to know did I want it thicker I said well if he can't tell half of the Patty is missing no I just want cancel my order. The ranch was watered down the macaroni and cheese was sour the rolls we're awful the food remind me of hospital food and or cafeteria food at the school. Warning warning do not eat here ..
When I took the napkin off of the utensils, there was food caked on the fork. Then when I got my pancakes they tasted like a lump of thick flour that couldn't be swallowed. The only good thing about this visit was the waitress. She was lovely and nice enough to remove the pancakes from the bill.
Pretty good but a bit pricey. Update: they can't seem to prepare the chicken fried CHICKEN plate; they have served me the "steak" twice. The problem? The "steak" is gristly, tough - hard to chew. I'm lowering my review as a result. (I did mention this to my server; I was not looking for my meal to be comped. They didn't offer to comp, didn't seem to care. The manager DID NOT try to speak with me at any point. Disappointing.)
“My first visit earlier this year was excellent, but the decline in quality is undeniable. The chicken-fried chicken was tough, the onion rings were undercooked, and the salad was wilted and unappetizing. Additionally, the male staff member at the register displayed a rude and condescending attitude. I would strongly recommend taking your business elsewhere if you’re seeking a quality dining experience.”
I remember many years ago my mother and I use to go eat at this steakhouse all the time.. I had a different name then.. years later my husband and I went to eat at this steakhouse now known as The Bull Pen... It was not a good experience.. the salad was not good or fresh at all.. I don't know why the ranch is super watery... The chicken fried steak was ok.. but my baked potato 🥔 was just awful.. really really hard.. and not made right.. my husband's mash potatoes... Completely bland.. the good thing was my daughters bullpen burger.. she loved it... To top it all off.. our waitress was so rude.. everything I asked for was brought to us with a bad attitude.. my husband didn't even eat his food.. so we waisted $55 dollars for a bad experience.. if you go to this establishment.. do yourself a favor.. order all your sides and toppings like extra ranch, cheese,or anything all at once.. so you can avoid bad service..
The waitress was great, but the food was awful. One of our party ordered chicken fried chicken. It looked good, but was mostly batter. She said it didn't taste good. The waitress comptd the meat. I got a breakfast sandwich. It wasn't restaurant quality. More like what i would make for kids at home. Won't be back.
