Okawa Sushi and Grill

This is definitely becoming my go-to sushi spot in the area. Everything we had was amazing. I cannot speak on the hibachi selection since my son and I had sashimi and he got a roll. But, every single item was high quality and delicious. They didn't miss on a single thing. I highly recommend ordering a side of the fresh wasabi, it is blissful. I got various sashimi and my son got the volcano roll. The hostess/server/waitress we had was an utter delight whose presence, demeanor, and helpfulness elevated the whole experience. I wish I had caught her name so I could give her a proper shout-out. Please, if you have a good experience somewhere, make sure you tip well. They really deserve it. I will add more photos next time I go.

This is a fun little sushi place. I went here with my parents. My dad and I like sushi but my mom doesn't so much. She got the teriyaki chicken, which she liked. My dad got a Philadelphia Roll (which I think cream cheese on sushi is gross) which he liked. I got the Dragon King roll which I thought was amazing. Not only did it taste good but it was in the shape of dragon with little jalapeno eyes. Service was top notch. This place is great overall. Highly recommend.

We were so amazed at how delicious the sushi was. By far the best in Modesto! So fresh and yummy. Service was fantastic. Oh and don’t even get me started on how delicious their deep fried ice cream is! Very reasonably priced too. We will definitely be regular customers now.

Got mixed tempura 4 shrimp and 4 vegetables. Got my food to go and it came pretty quickly when l got come the food basically had no flavor and the dipping sauce tasted like warm water. Very disappointed, won't be going back.

We have gone to Osaka Sushi for years but because of some issues we have started going to Okawa. Food is great. Atmosphere is great. Service is wonderful and people are friendly. You need to try it.

Went in on a Friday night and it was extremely busy but we were able to get seated right away! Our server was very nice but did forget to refill our drinks and had to tell twice to get our condiments. The food was good, sushi and fried spicy tuna jalapeño poppers and chicken karrage were exceptionally good! The chicken katsu was rather dry, wouldn't get that again. Ambience is very family friendly! And I will be back for those spicy tuna poppers! The best I ever had and chicken karrage!

Very pleasant experience. Clean and calm environment inside, our waitress was very nice, service was quick. The food was delicious but also affordable. Is hard to find a good sushi restaurant that has a nice dine in experience and doesn’t break the bank. Very yummy, I will be returning.

I absolutely love Okawa! Excellent sushi and sashimi and a good variety of fish. Have great non sushi options as well. They have a decent selection of Sake and other spirits. I take my kids all the time and it's great for a sushi date too. Staff is excellent and friendly!

This was our first visit to this new sushi location and we were quite pleased. It was smaller then expected but very quaint and clean. Service was good it was my wife’s birthday and they even played happy birthday over the speaker system. Food was delicious terrific maki rolls. And super tender ribeyes. Definitely a great experience we will return soon

We were warmly welcomed, all of our questions were kindly answered, and the staff checked on us often. The food was absolutely delicious—we loved everything we tried. The spicy edamame was my favorite, and the presentation of the rolls was beautiful. Mine was vegetarian and was equally as thoughtful as the other rolls. Highly recommend!

The spicy mayo (i ordered on the side) had a pleasant tangy kick that complemented it well. To drink, the Sapporo beer was served crisp and ice-cold, exactly how it should be.🍺 A wonderful surprise was the Studio Ghibli soundtracks playing softly in the background—adding a nostalgic, cozy atmosphere.🎶 The service was excellent. The staff were kind and professional throughout, and Michelle, our waitress, was especially courteous and attentive. All of this for about $45 made for a very reasonable and enjoyable night out. I’ll definitely return.🤗

Great staff even though you can tell they were limited on staff but they rocked. We got two appetizers edamame and mixed tempura both were really good and quality ingredients 11/10. For our entree we got Teriyaki chicken and the mixed volcano grill with chicken and shrimp and everything was divine, flavors were on point chicken was moist and well cooked 11/10 for sure. We got the crunchy munchy roll and the shrimp tempura roll and both were fresh and delicious 11/10 pleasant surprise as we had to travel from Turlock to get some great Japanese food. Great atmosphere and great staff. Highly recommend coming here over other places in Modesto.

Best Sushi in all Modesto. No matter what you order here, be sure to expect the best. Flavor, you will never complain, customer service is at its best, food presentation is very pleasing, and the atmosphere is very inviting and welcoming. To be honest, don't waste your time at other sushi restaurants and (that's just my personal opinion), but I guarantee you that once you have tried this restaurant you will never go back and you will thank me later.

Came in a little close to closing time still got amazing/friendly service. The sushi was so clean and fresh. I mostly like nigiri’s, and there’s is probably the best in Modesto. The oysters were so fresh. I’ve been back twice already since my first visit within a week. Extremely delicious sushi, restaurant is spotless/clean, and the service is great.

Been here twice. Sushi rolls are good, but a little expensive for my taste. Atmosphere is great. I like the authentic Japanese music & decor. Customer service is good, but the wait for your food is longer than your average sushi restaurant. Overall, 4/5 stars.

Food is really good, but service is terrible. If you do a pick up order, be prepared to be helped last. Servers will continually walk by without acknowledging.

The sea urchin nigiri was bad,fried oysters were cold when they brought it out to me, and sushi was good. I would not recommend this sushi spot. Took an hour to get my food and just saw as everyone was handed there's even though I got there prior to their visit, I suppose they don't value their takeout customers as much as their dine in.

We won’t order that again. Perhaps the night we went had slow service. We will give them a second chance to see in the future.

i’m in love with sushi, this place definitely scratches the itch but isn’t anything crazy. their menu is decent in terms of variety they have soups, rolls, bbq and etc. the main low point of this place was the service. the people were nice but we were one of maybe 3 or 4 parties in the restaurant and had to call multiple times to get served drinks and get to go containers. mind you there was 3 or 4 servers at the time so was a little interesting but didn’t let it ruin the experience. the main highlight is the atmosphere it’s very cozy and chill inside with wood accents all around. the short ribs were decent too, tender for sure but had quite a bit of fat on them so if you’re not into that then beware. rolls were passable, like i said nothing crazy in terms of flavor. and price was very reasonable

If I could give this place zero stars I would , food was burnt . Veggies were raw but still had a burnt taste . Manger offered me 5% off of 161$ everybody left hungry . Even after I offered to give the food back WORST experience of my life . Waitress was nice that’s about it .

Me and my husband went in today at 7pm and a lady seated us and then left. All the girls that worked there were passing by not asking us if we wanted anything to drink or to take our order. We have been waiting there for 15mins and still no one came to our table to take are order. I would not suggest this place to anyone. Come to show how disrespectful this place is to seat people that walk in and to not ever take their order. So I just walked out and went next door to a Mexican restaurant where we were welcomed in.

Honestly this is a roll type of place. Maybe coming on a weekday was the wrong choice but the fish was really dry and old. Their Edamame wasn't cooked either. Disappointed with the quality of their food but service was awesome and the atmosphere was great! Most likely not going to come back in.
