What's not to like about a place where you can get $6 Hendricks? Really, an unassuming watering hole that is worth your support in this valley that is getting over run with gastro pubs and places with 40 beers on tap. Also, last time I was there a Crock-Pot of meatballs appeared!
me and my cousin where on a really big bike ride and I really wanted a beer and stopping in a restaurant all sweaty wasn't going to happen so I found this place while we were hanging out at Rengstorff skatepark and I said hey lets give this place a shot. you can't go inside because of covid-19 so we had to sit outside which I don't really understand because we went to a bar in San Mateo and you can sit inside. no big deal they had a TV outside at least. There was people their hanging out having a good time the owner was very friendly at least I think it was the owner your drinks where good prices and i ordered two whiskey shots which where definitely a double shot I felt very welcomed they're the pictures online of the bar inside looked very cool I wish we could have been inside definitely check this place out it was very low-key not that many people
Great neighborhood bar. Well lit, quiet enough to have a conversation, friendly bartenders and clientele. Not too fancy but good tap selection. Has a pool table and a Foosball table. At least two screens often tuned to sports.
Relax, grab a seat at the bar, and be prepared to be welcomed into the family. I can't say enough wonderful things about Fred's, so instead I'll send a huge THANK YOU to the staff and regulars who welcomed us like family and helped create a night of fun conversation we won't ever forget. Fred's has been here for decades, but the spotless interior feel like it was just opened yesterday. Grab a drink, watch the game, and introduce yourself to the folks at the bar. You'll finish the day planning your next trip to the pub.
Conveniently located watering hole has a good selection of booze and a nice food truck out back starting at 5pm.
Never been to Mountain View before so of course I search bars near me and the reviews for Fred's were outstanding. I Ubered here and definitely didn't don't regret it! Bartenders are out of this world! Super cheap drinks and great atmosphere! If I lived here this would be my local spot hands down!
I ordered a Tanqueria and tonic . 6 month s ago $7. Now $10-$12 depending on the bartender . Stopped back in and Paul made me and excellent Tanqueria and tonic. Thanks Paul.
Great atmosphere on Thursday Karaoke night! There’s no food on Thursday though, but you can DoorDash. Beer selection is not bad.
I almost do not want to leave a review for this place. One of the best dive bars in this area. Great beers on tap, great music, great place to chill and talk (not too noisy!). Grab an Imperial here, sit, and say to yourself, "life is great!" ($$)
Fred’s is an absolute icon of Palo Alto. With all that’s different in the world today, it’s nice to have a place like this. RIP Ted Fletcher.
Good vibes and very divey bar. A little older crowd but super friendly staff and really good sports setups
Do you need a go-to dive bar in your life? This is it. I've taken friends here to kill an hour on Saturday night. I've taken friends here to retreat from a bad relationship. I've taken friends here to watch the Sharks and Warriors. Bartenders are perfect; friendly and chatty when you want, or quick and quiet if that's more your evening's speed.
Last Word: 3/4 ounce gin 3/4 ounce green Chartreuse 3/4 ounce maraschino liqueur 3/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed Garnish: brandied cherry (optional)
Excellent neighborhood dive bar, perhaps the last one in the area. Thursday night is karaoke and super fun. Dan behind the bar rocks. Hope the new condos across the street don't shut this place down for noise.
Great dive bar with TVs, pool table, jukebox, and an outdoor area. Bartender wasn’t the friendliest, but I’m not there to talk to the bartender anyway
Favorite new local hangout! Not sure if this is a normal thing, but I happened upon Fred's while a large group had taken over the place. I felt like I was surrounded by 30+ Samoan rugby players, which was of course totally awesome.
This place is a hole in the wall. A wonderful hole in the wall. Great trivia and probably the cheapest drinks in the South Bay. Almost entirely regulars at any given moment but everyone seemed very welcome.
Great staff with very quick service. Luckily I went at a time when they weren't too busy. Not really a tourist environment but definitely good beers and cocktails at a good price.
Sarah and Red make the atmosphere of this dive bar amazing! Thank you for such amazing service and conversations!
Nice dive bar. Great place to have beer or two before sleep
I LOVED this place. If you're looking for a dive bar in Palo Alto, look no further! It's cozy, has a killer old school neon sign AND has Bitberger on tap! Get a drink or ten here! It's great!
Love the trivia show on Monday nights (voted best in the Peninsula)! I hear they have karaoke on Thurdays and Saturdays also! Drinks are strong and reasonably priced! Neighborhood dive bar with nice people!
The first time I went to Fred's I was legitimately nervous because it looked liked the skeeviest dive bar ever (it doesn't have great lighting around it and it's tucked into this weird corner next to an empty store). I'm glad a took a chance and went inside. The staff are all super nice and the patrons are loud and friendly, and this is only on a Monday night! Monday nights are trivia nights, and it's a ton of fun (even if you're not that good at trivia). The place can get very full, but all the teams are happy to have you join if you don't have your own team. My friends and I go very often and have really grown to love this place.
New to the area and found Fred’s. I was welcomed in and felt like a regular day 1. The bartenders pour great drinks, the atmosphere is laid back and casual. Red, Sarah, and the rest of the staff introduced me to others which has allowed me to make some great new friends. Highly recommend this place if you like a great “dive” type bar.
Best bar around, great people and environment.
The place is the only Mountain View Ol Skoo Cheersish... Unpretentious bar .. Politics is not allowed but most people are from the Norman Rockwell America .. Dogs allowed. And some hipsters soo. PBR and shot specials for the working man Staff is way chill Only the Asian dude you see occasionally is a bit chilly, but almost never there Juke box, pool table and occasionally free hot dogs They have for order White Castles, Hot Pockets, Corn Dogs and Polish Sausages
This place has great prices for drink! The staff seem a little intimidating at first, but they're actually quite friendly and so are their patrons. We had an absolute amazing time playing music on the jukebox, laughing and interacting with fellow customers! They even have a dartboard and a mini dance floor in there. Can't wait to go back!!
Fred's Place has been a great local bar for decades. Drink prices and the food are good. Staff is very friendly. It reminds me of some good pubs I've been to in Europe. Mostly locals just having a good time.
Best bar around, great people and environment.

Fred's place is a classic. I don't think they've changed their pitcher prices since 1985. Great dive bar, not too crowded, friendly crowd, super laid back, awesome value = what more could you want?
This place is so awesome. I went on a Thursday for Kareoke and it was fun. The vibe is chill the people are friendly the bartender serves good drinks, pretty decent amount of alcohol. Not watered down like some places. I really had a good time and woukd definitely go back on a Thursday night. I don't sing but to go cheer and make new friends.😁
I agree with others about four stars. I’ve been coming to Fred’s for decades. My friends and I sometimes joke how we’d love to own this business: there’s so little effort put to decoration or presentation, yet the following is strong. Mixed drinks are what you’d expect. Beer quality is better than you’d expect. I guess it’s about managing expectations. Sometimes we let down the person who matters most to us, our performance falling way below the expectations we have set as our standard. All we can do is work for them behind the scenes until they notice and maybe open the door back to us again. But with Fred’s everyone forms their low expectations from the parking lot, so Freds never disappoints. And their door will always be open.
Didn't eat there. Met friends there for a drink ,9 dollars for a Makers bourbon . Had different football games on 5 or so TV's. Covered outside area at the back. Basic dive bar .
Who knew such a dive could be so brilliantly awesome. New favorite place in South Bay. Karaoke, pool, great drinks and even better acustica. No need to tell in there, even with music you can hear just fine.
Did karoake, had some beer, it was a lot of fun! Beer was good. Thursday night is karaoke night here.
First time here met a few locals, very "unique" individuals. Got there around 4pm no where to sit at bar which is a good sign . Bartender was cool and attentive. Specials were a fair bargain. Definitely coming back.
I’m here for the first time at the dive bar. It’s pretty cool here we got all Fred serving a whole bunch of people but he’s doing his best. Love the clientele here. Good prices. Beer at $4.50

Solid dive bar so cute expectations to that of a five bar. It gave a real 'San Jose" kind of vibe. One pool table but some decent shooters come around in the mid day. If your not looking to spend a lot give it a spin.
Small place. They have a pool table and video games. Plenty of seating with big screens in various locations. The drinks are strong . Looks like many people are regulars.

Hours say open til two, arrived and clearly closed around midnight or maybe a little after. No big deal if it’s slow on a given night or whatever. Maybe update hours if there’s a temporary change, but bummer from an out of towner. Heard good things and hope to check it out before skipping town.
This place has good drinks and great prices, perfect little dive bar except one thing: the bartender started out super friendly but then as soon as it was clear I was intoxicated got very inappropriate with me and tried to get me in a back room. We had a good time until that happened, I was very surprised when it did. Obviously I was upset and left immediately. As a former dive-bartender myself I was not thrilled. We won't be back if we're ever in town again.
Bartender wasn't friendly nor welcoming but not rude. Just indifferent. Not much on social skills outside of doing just what's necessary or so it seemed from first impression. Just answered no more than asked and did the bare minimum to serve you. All good if you're not looking for any interaction. Bar itself was clean with lots of televisions on various stations. Decor had a nice touch with collectibles and memorabilia everywhere. Nice outdoor seating area however lots of parking taken up by various stationary vehicles.

Super annoyed. I held a party here last night. I called a month ago to reserve a table and I confirmed that table two days ago. I got there early and NO tavle was reserved, but they assured me that someone would leave- there’s only one table big enough for my party. The guys never left. It was so unfair. Z The Bartneder is great, but that’s about it.
We actually went to the food truck in the back of Fred's and it wasn't that great. I had heard good things but maybe my expectations were too high. Don't order the halibut or the hush puppies. Folks were really nice though.
The bartender was reticent if not rude. Had issues communicating simple things. Prices were not low enough to justify below par service. There is a pool table and bunch of TVs. Sure you could catch up with old friends in a modest setting but it is not cheap enough to qualify as a divey sports bar.
Cool place, but if CHANG is the bartender, turn around and just leave! CHANG is horrible. When you go to a local bar, part of the appeal is the local characters and an engaging bartender. CHANG is rude, inattentive, monosyllabic at best (more like a grunt), and basically couldn’t care less about the bar or the patrons. Such a shame. We had one drink and left in disgust. To the owner - for the sake of your establishment please consider having a different bartender.
This is a really nasty and gross bar. Super unfriendly staff as well. Particularly the owner/manager that is a rude individual. He went out of his way to be unwelcoming and unfriendly. I’d recommend not coming here and going elsewhere. The vibe was dead inside too so it’s kind of a give away that this is just a sad establishment.
The bartender is a female who works Sundays, Mondays, and Thursdays. She has like a complete attitude. She kept like singling me out at the end of the night to get out of the bar. I didn’t appreciate her service or her attitude.!!
Do yourself a favor and go literally anywhere else. O’malley’s down the street is much better.
Use to be a great place to come to . Now it seems to be a spot for selected few to come have drinks . If your not selected, your not welcome . Small spot , few chairs and only 1 pool table . No music playing . New bartender lady is rude . Spot has changed alot . Use to be my 2nd to go to spot after ohMalley's , being the only bars close here in Palo Alto mountain view area. Now I guess o'malley's is the only 1 to go to 😒 have to stretch out some to sunny vale or santa clara.
Women that is serving is rude and very judgemental. She has no respect for patrons and seems like she enjoy being very authoritarian. Its off putting and uncomfortable. Wouldn't recommend to anyone in the area. O mallyes is a much better option.
