Tip: The onigiri combo is a good deal for NYC. Consider ordering individual onigiri instead of a combo if you're unsure about the side dishes.

Stopped in for a snack and this cafe is very cute with tasty options. I love ume and wanted to try the ume onigiri but it was sold out so my other vegan option was the kinoko (5 kinds of japanese mushroom, scallion). It was so tasty! The perfect bite.
This spot has incredibly tasty food and I love everything they make here so much so it’s worth going out of my way to get here The seaweed they use is so fresh. The chicken rice ball was another stand out because was perfectly balenced They also have the only fruit tea (that isn’t boba) that I love because it’s just right, not too sweet and not too tart. Yuzu peach tea! I also got the mango cake twice and it’s like a strawberry shortcake but with mango.
10/10. I found this place from a content creator; a daughter, on tiktok whose mom owns Hanamizuki Cafe. Decided to try it since it is close by and wow. We got hawaiian, sukiyaki, and 2 tuna yuzu and all were delicious. Personally, the tuna was my bf and I’s favorite and we later got two more to go. (Also had an iced matte latte, was creamy and yummy, you add ur own sugar). The service was quick and the area was so dainty and tidy. I love the layout and it was a great experience. Thank you! :)
I absolutely loved this cafe! The onigiri were delicious and the miso soup was so comforting on yesterday’s cold day 🫶🏼 oh and the matcha latte is very good as well
Nice bright space with all two tops. The ume and kinoko onigiri’s were both great; the kinoko rice is especially well seasoned and there was mushroom in every bite.
I got a combo with the sukiyaki and the Hawaiian. Everything was fresh and delicious, the service was quick and friendly, and the restaurant cozy and clean. I stopped in on my way to the train station and the meal sustained me for a full day of traveling. I can’t wait to come back!
Super cute and trendy onigiri spot! Everything felt very nice and clean, and the space is thoughtfully designed. I really liked that it’s a sit-down place, since most onigiri spots are usually more grab-and-go — it makes the experience feel more relaxed and enjoyable. I do wish there were a few more vegan options on the menu. It would also be cool if they offered some kind of dipping sauces, even if it’s not super traditional, just to add a little variety. Overall, a great spot and definitely worth checking out.
Really amazing food and atmosphere I’ve been here twice. Pretty well priced menu I recommend the onigiri combo (two onigiris + a side dish and miso soup). Very flavorful and good portion size. There’s also outlets everywhere and the staff are all so nice! UPDATED REVIEW 6 MONTHS LATER my go to spot for date night with my girlfriend I think the sukiyaki I think is their best onigiri! I’ve been here at least 4 times since. They recently added desserts which are PERFECT ! Here I have the mango shaved ice
I will always recommend an onigiri from this restaurant! Cheap and very affordable to get one about 4-6$ for one!!! Especially coming out of FIT college it’s a desirable food to snack on once for a while! The combo meals would be a bit pricey but it’s very filling I do say so myself. The service is very welcoming and you feel right at home. There is plenty of seats and table to sit down so you don’t have to worry about standing too long.
The vibes are impeccable here. Bright, clean, and airy. They had city pop playing and the atmosphere was super chill. The staff are friendly and happy to recommend items based on your tastes. Although the sukiyaki seems to be the most popular flavor, I think people are sleeping on the mentaiko cheese. Seriously just try it and thank me later. Spicy, creamy, cheesey, filling. There are no downsides. The prices are on par for the area, but the quality is high enough to justify it. They also have a nice clean bathroom for customers.
the onigiri here was sooo good! i also had a matcha crepe cake and throughly enjoyed my meal. contrary to some reviews here, i think the prices are reasonable for the onigiri— if you go to any japanese supermarket in nyc, onigiri goes for 3-4 dollars, and the onigiri here is constantly being made in the back and also bigger in size. 2 onigiri was more than enough for me for a big lunch (i am an adult woman for reference) my favorite was the mentaiko mayo cheese— i’d definitely get it again! the ambiance was also very calming and comforting~ I don’t typically find viral japanese nyc spots worth the “”hype”” but you can get a solid meal here in a cute place!
The cutest Japanese café serving onigiri and kakigori, run by a lovely mother-and-daughter duo. It felt like stepping into a cozy scene from an anime. The matcha shaved ice, the drinks, the illustrated menu…everything was so charming and perfect for any matcha lover. It was pretty busy when I visited on the weekend, but they still greeted me with the kindest smiles and made me feel so welcome. *Matcha Shaved Ice $14.80 *Mango Shaved Ice $14.80 The best matcha kakigori I’ve had outside of Asia—especially impressive at this price point. Even the ice itself tasted like matcha/mango ice cream, not just plain ice with syrup. I loved the toppings: the matcha warabimochi and red bean were perfect complements. *Onigiri $5.50/pc (Musubi*, Mentaiko*, Sukiyaki, Salmon) A huge step up from store-bought onigiri. These rice balls were fresh, warm, and loaded with delicious toppings. The musubi and mentaiko were my top picks. It was actually my first time trying musubi, and the rice mixed with sun-dried tomatoes was such a great touch. *Mango Matcha Latte $6.75 *Strawberry Hojicha Latte $7.00 Reasonably priced for flavored matcha/hojicha! You could tell right away from the vibrant colors how rich the tea flavors were. I especially loved the housemade fruit syrup . Both drinks were great, but the hojicha stood out for me as it’s tough to find a good hojicha latte in nyc.
I ordered the onigiri combo and matcha latte for lunch. The staff was so kind to not only tell me the crowd favorites but also the staff favorite which I love because I was looking to try something new. The restaurant is clean, COOL (temperature wise- so nice for the summer time), and welcoming! Onigiri Combo: The onigiri is a generous size! Mentaiko- great combo with the shiso leaf and kick of spice. Kinoko- mushroom flavor and actual mushroom chunks are so flavorful. Special shoutout to the miso soup that had tofu skin adding a nice texture. Carrot sesame seed and something else salad (sorry I don’t know the name) so refreshing and great crunch! Matcha: vibrant color- clean taste!
I came here with one mission dessert! 🍰 And it absolutely did not disappoint. Tried both the matcha crepe cake and the mango shaved ice and wow. The crepe cake was soft and rich with matcha flavor, perfectly balanced with the light whipped cream. The mango shaved ice was incredibly fluffy, almost snow-like, with a sweet mango sauce and juicy peach slices on top. So refreshing!
I went out with my sister, this place is nice and cozy ☺️. I order Inari to be honest the taste is good but it mostly rice with bit of meat and egg, I also Oder mango matcha latte I am not a huge fan of matcha so lol didn’t like it just wanted to try it 😅. BUT!! Sweet potato cheesecake was the most delicious one!! Out of all them I will come back to eat that again!!!! 💕✨
I wanted to love this place more than I actually did. We each got the set meal. I was really disappointed in the shrimp tempura onigiri, which was the monthly special. The rice could have used some seasoning as the shrimp itself was quite small, so it was mostly just eating plain rice. The highlight of the meal was the mentaiko onigiri. If I went back, it would only be for that.
I can see the social media appeal of this kind of food, but honestly it just seems messier and more complicated than a sushi roll. I stopped here for a quick lunch this past Thursday around 1pm. There were a few people in line in front of me and throughout the small restaurant, but once I sat down it got pretty busy - clearly a popular midday destination. As an aside, 90% of the clientele seems to be Asian Gen Zers, which I guess makes sense. Like a lot of the smaller NYC restaurants, the ceilings are super high but the space is pretty narrow. They have very modern tables/chairs (kind of gave off a higher-end Ikea vibe), which I think works well with the more limited square footage, and it doesn't feel too claustrophobic even when the place is jumping. I decided to aggressively hit up the onigiri section of the menu, ordering three different ones. They were bigger than I thought they would be, so unless you have a pretty hardcore appetite, their $16 two-onigiri combo that comes with soup/sides is probably the way to go. Mine cost around $18, so not a big deal, especially since I'm not a huge miso soup fan. My three were the Salmon, Inari and Karaage. The Salmon was a giant miss for me, though a lot of that is palate preference. The obvious comp/not-so-distant cousin to these items is a sushi roll, and I think it's weird to have seared salmon rather than raw salmon in a roll with rice. It always tastes like the fish is off, even though it isn't. Coupled with the pickled radish it was just not my thing at all. The Inari was pretty good - basically the equivalent of a very small, almost breakfast burrito. The problem with it for me (and all of these onigiri) is that it's hard to eat and get all of the ingredients in one bite, if that makes sense. Maybe there's a sophisticated technique to eating these that I'm unaware of (100% a possibility), but I'd end up getting a bite of just rice, or just the beef. All of the ingredients were good, but it was hard for me to get them to play together. The Karaage for sure was my favorite. Unsurprisingly, it's also the naughtiest one I had, featuring fried chicken and spicy mayo, but very tasty. The primary issue with that is it was super messy - one side of the onigiri is doused in the mayo, and from what I could see, they didn't have napkins (maybe I missed it, but I even went up to the counter to check). As a result? A spicy mayo-drenched paw that I tried to subtly wipe on the tray a lot. Again, if I had more practice with using the chopsticks on these, maybe it's a moot issue. I would suggest though that they provide napkins and more Americanized utensils for Neanderthals like me. This was an interesting lunch, I'll at least give them that. It's not really my thing, but I could easily see this being a go-to destination for someone who's more versatile with a pair of chopsticks.
Mentaiko and mayo Onigiri good- good flavor. Unagi Onigiri BAD- do not get the combo, side dishes very sad and not worth a miso, just get 3 onigiri instead. My friend had the hawaiian onigiri (musubi) and didn't finish it bc it was so bad. Weird red stuff in the rice that didn't add flavor or texture.
Honestly. I was kind of disappointed by my experience here. Atmosphere and servers were great. I didn’t like the food though. I got their special of the month (shrimp tempura) and the salmon. The onigiri were sizable but it felt like mostly rice. The filling was okay, a little salty to me. The filling wasn’t evenly distributed so I would get bites of mostly rice then a bit of mostly filling. Miso soup tasted salty as well. The small side dish was nice.
