Always get the mapo tofu here, it’s incredibly tasty and cheap. Good portions too, and definitely satisfy my spice level (I tend to go on the spicier side).
Not cheap but portions are huge. Either share or count on having a delicious lunch for the following day.
Such a great spot! The food was amazing, prices were fair and cheap drinks! Green beans were definitely the hidden gem of the dinner but also the fried chicken and shrimp were incredible too!
Really enjoyed the food and services I received. The food was delicious and the services was exceptional. The employee (maybe the owner) I interacted with was very generous and gave us a discount and a complimentary drink for placing our first order. Loved it so much I've already gone back for seconds.
The food was delicious. We were a group of 6 and tried several different dishes. The Sichuan boiled fish was like a large soup and very flavorful with aromatic tastes and contained many crunchy bean sprouts and Chinese mushrooms. The Chicken Kung Pao and Shrimp Kung Pow were excellent, a mixture of spicy with sweet undertones. The potato with green peppers was unique- the potatoes were shredded and reminded me of al dente noodles! Recommend highly, if you like the spicy type of Chinese food!
Been here several times and the food is always fresh and delicious. Fast and friendly service. Favorites are the Szechuan spicy chicken, cabbage, the beef soup and grilled fish. Glad it’s in the neighborhood.
This is now my absolute favorite restaurant! I met a friend there for dinner a few of weeks ago, it was our first time, and everything was great. We decided to meet there again the following week, and then again last night. Each time we were delighted with the attentive, cordial service and the food was spectacular. I guess we're regulars now!
Honestly the best and the most authentic Sichuan restaurant I’ve been in NY so far. (I’d like to think I’ve tried a fair amount of Sichuan food in Manhattan as Ive always loved this kind of cuisine since I was a child. The food is very authentic and the service is great. I even ordered food delivery 3 days after dining in for the first time and ordered different food and it still tasted amazing. Fav dishes: Cabbages, Fish fillets in chili oil, pan-fried intestines in pot, Sichuan pickles, etc.
Great vegetarian mapo tofu! It’s flavorful and spicy (standard order is two 🌶️ 🌶️ out of 3).
Incredible Sunday special - 50% off dim sum and appetizers! Not only is the price unbeatable, the food is superb. I cannot wait to return.
This was some truly excellent food! I have been eating the same dishes across so many different restaurants and So Do fun makes them so complex, light and interesting. I highly recommend the Mao Po tofu, Kung pao chicken, wonton soup, and string beans
This place is a great add to the neighborhood! The people working there are incredibly kind and the food is great. Recommend the scallion pancake, soup dumplings, and the chow fun.
We stopped in on a whim. The staff were super attentive and genuinely interested in our experience. The food was outstanding! Best I have had in a long time. As an update went back in June 2025 - still just as good!
delicious, huge portions, nice strong flavor!! get the sesame noodles and green beans!
This is an amazing addition to the neighborhood. The food is fantastic - as others have said maybe the best Chinese in the city and the service is great as well. Portions are large and the atmosphere is nice. It’s amazing that we were just able to walk in on a Saturday night but I suspect not for long as more people learn about this place.
Every morsel of New Years dinner was perfect. Even the cold crumbs remaining after making Peking duck buns were juicy and flavorful. The soup accompanying the duck was impeccable and generously portioned. Sautéed green beans were super tender without being mushy and overdone. And far from gouging us for the favor of seating us on the holiday, the price of the duck was cut $10 in observance of the New Year. Lovely casual and welcoming vibe makes me resolve to sample the rest of the menu.
Wow. This restaurant was so unassuming, I would have walked right past if not for the recommendation of a colleague who works in the area. I'm very glad we visited. Impeccably clean inside, it's somehow a stylish mix of a classic Chinese restaurant and an iconic NYC diner. As soon as we walked in, it smelled delicious, and just got better from there. The menu isn't long by Chinese restaurant standards, but our party loved everything we ordered, from old standards like general's chicken and black pepper beef, to an outstanding tofu dish that left our mouths numb in a good way. Everything came out steaming hot, too, which was welcome on a rainy night.
This is the Chinese food our area has been missing since the pandemic!! Their menu is set up where dishes are named differently making usual dishes hard to find but they do have very good American style Chinese as well as delicious and spicy Szechuan dishes. “Beef and broccoli” is under “broccoli style” and you have your choice of chicken, beef or shrimp. Chicken and string beans they have listed under “chicken”. The closest to “orange beef” they call “crispy shredded beef”. Their “boiled beef” is actually a very delicious spicy dish with cabbage, mushrooms, garlic and chili oil sauce- far from what an American thinks of when they hear “boiled”. Their cumin beef and dry pot fish fillet are also very delicious (and spicy). When ordering one of the spicy dishes, you may want to add an extra rice because their rice portion tends to be small for such a hot dish. Highly recommend.
Absolutely awesome. Stopped by for lunch and they were setting up for a photo shoot, so I got to see many of the dishes. They all looked great. Had the Shredded Garlic Chicken, Sichuan Dumplings and the Soup Dumplings (they were running a special). All were as good as I've tasted.
Walked in here on a whim and left super satisfied. 1st, I love that they give you peanuts when you sit down. Such a yummy gesture right from the start. The service itself is just amazing. We got the tofu and dang dang noodles. Super authentic and super delicious. I asked for it spicy and they listened. The house plum juice is also delicious. I wanna come back here and try some of their specialties. They have bullfrog on the menu 👀 Tldr: great food. Great service
The lunch special deals are awesome! Get the general tsos! 👌🏾
Excellent, interesting dishes. Terrific, helpful waiters! Have not found many chinese restaurants in Manhattan hitting highs on food, service and atmosphere!! Will be coming back soon
Wow! This is the best, most authentic Chinese that I have ever had in NYC! We were a big group so we got to try a lot of the menu and every dish was delicious. Their boiled fish in chili sauce was very special and the mapo tofu was fab. They were very accommodating with allergies and vegetarian substitutions. The to-go containers were all beautifully presented and high quality. This will be my go-to Chinese dine in and takeout from now on!
Yummy, spicy food! This feels like a hidden gem. I came with some friends over the weekend. The restaurant was not super busy so the service was very fast. Having a family style meal is pretty affordable, and everything we ordered was delicious. Be prepared for spice, as should always expected with Szechuan food!
The food here is absolutely insane! I had wong tong soup which was so good and Kung Pao Chicken. I can say with out any doubt this place has the best Kung Pao chicken I have ever had each bite had amazing flavors the perfect amount of peanuts the chicken so soft and tasty cooked perfectly. The correct herbs like ginger and garlic instead of the usual onion and pepper fake recipes made this dish out of the universe. I felt a good vibe when I decided to eat here cause the decor made me feel I might actually be in China the wait staff were very friendly and attentive. If you love Kung Pao chicken you MUST try this place don’t blame me if you quit all other places after this.
Now this is the place to go for authentic chinese food, especially in Gramercy Park. Their beef and ox tongue in chili sauce is delectable and delivers a traditional experience. The crispy rice cakes and crispy pork are delicious snacks that make for a fun meal. Their menu is huge and you cannot go wrong with any of the options. my personal favorite is the spicy prawns that pack a punch with the heat. Don't forget to wash it all down with their delicious and fresh plum juice! Overall it was an amazing experience and I cannot wait to be back.
Came here with a group of 5 and everything was delicious. Our favorites were: soup dumplings, Peking Duck (it comes with a lovely duck soup), cucumber salad and dan Dan noodles. Definitely recommend trying this place out! We will be back!
tried out this new restaurant because they were doing $1 soup dumplings as a promo. solid chinese food and decent pricing too. portion sizes are generous, food is seasoned well & flavorful! loved their mapo tofu and will be back for that for sure!
Just newly opened, I live across the street. I ordered to go and wow it hit the spot!! The Dumplings were amazing with every bite! The fried spicy chicken was again so flavorful and moist. Place your orders now!!!
food was delicious, service was sufficient, prices seemed fair, portions were pretty big—likely designed to be family-style! most dishes do not come with rice
Fantastic! Really excellent food, decor, service. Everything. The food was the winner, no pics because we were too busy chowing down. It was probably the best Chinese food I've had. Possibly ever. This place deserves your business if you're hungry for a really good meal. We will go back again for sure. My new favorite for Chinese in the area.
YUMMY!! Finally a great Chinese restaurant in the city. The flavors are wonderfully authentic and so different from the regular American-Chinese spots. Each dish tastes different. Highly recommend the beef soup and the kung pao which is a lot more flavorful than the spice drenched version generally served at other places. EDIT: been here many times now and it’s still going strong, maybe even getting better! IMHO this is bordering on Michelin type class and quality.
I tried For u Chinese restaurant again. This time I got the regular meal of. chicken and broccoli plus a hot and sour soup. Everything was delicious.....well prepared and so tasty! When I came by there were quite a few people having lunch inside. I will eat here again and I recommend For U.
amazing food and incredibly nice staff. our server was so sweet and had so many delicious recs of authentic food choices, really encouring us to choose different items off the menu we wouldnt have thought to choose. will definitely return here. favorite dishes: dan dan noodles soup dumplings cucumber salad soup that came with the peeking duck seasme desert balls
Been here a few times now and it is deLICIOUS! High quality ingredients, freshly made, nice spice (if you want it). Highly recommend the cabbage, green beans and eggplant, and fried rice (with or without meat)! Pro tip get some plum juice to cut the spice
Finally some authentic Chinese food in Gramercy!!!! We had the MOST delicious dinner made from fresh ingredients and the perfect blend of spices: Pork Buns, Green Beans and Eggplant, and Crispy Fried Chicken - all cooked to perfection! The staff was super attentive and friendly (shoutout to Kat!) and the atmosphere had the perfect blend of clean and bright without feeling cold. So happy to welcome So Do Fun to the neighborhood!
Delicious Chinese food in a cute atmosphere. The 13$ lunch deal is amazing
Ngl would go back. Inexpensive and pretty good, so am glad I gave this place a try
Great food. Can be spicy so ask to adjust heat to your preferred level. Peking duck was excellent. Nice presentation. Truly excellent
We dined in and ordered the filleted fish and stir-fried cabbage. Service and food were excellent! It was fairly quiet when we visited - not sure if it was just a slow night but given how good the food was and how reasonable the prices are, I’m not sure why this place wasn’t packed.
This Chinese takeout spot in Union Square is a fantastic option, especially for lunch! I consistently go for their lunch specials, which typically run around $10-$12, and I think it's an excellent value for the area. Ordering online for pickup is super convenient, and the food consistently comes out quickly, which is a huge plus for a lunch break. My personal favorites are the beef and broccoli and the spicy fish filet, but honestly, any of their other lunch special entrees are solid choices. What really makes this place stand out is the value, particularly given its Union Square location. Most other lunch spots or options in the vicinity will easily set you back upwards of $15-$16,
The most underrated Chinese restaurant in the area. The restaurant is part of a successful chain in China, so the food is actually authentic and delicious. Their menu features many regional specialities (spicy!) and classic home cooked dishes. As a vegetarian, this Sichuan/Szechuan restaurant has more options than other ones I’ve come across. I highly recommend the cabbage, eggplant and green beans, broccoli appetizer, and the mapo tofu (they do it without pork). Nice ambiance, spacious, and great service as well. High recommend you check this out over some of the “usual suspects” in the East Village.
Great customer service, food is amazing and fresh. They give you your money worth! One of my favs!
My boyfriend and I picked up takeout from ‘For U’ tonight, and we were pleasantly surprised by how delicious everything was. I rarely leave reviews, but this place really stood out. I’m always on the lookout for great Chinese spots, and this one is definitely a keeper. The prices are reasonable, and they even included a complimentary soup, which was much appreciated given the chilly weather. We’ll definitely be ordering from here again!
So Do Fun is a new establishment for an authentic pod of boiled fish in chilli sauce. Bass is live fish (in fillet form), while filleted fish is previously frozen tilapia (therefore the steep price difference). One cannot go wrong with the boiled bass in chili sauce, and will be able to enjoy it a lot without feeling overwhelmed at the end. The soup base burst with spicy and peppercorn flavors without being overly oily and greasy, while the fish was tender and mouth watering. There is no excuse for not adding a second bowl of rice to pair with this excellent dish.
My favorite Friday lunch restaurant. dined in and had take-out; every instance has been great. Spacious and comfortable sitting, light is just right, no loud/blaring music. The ambiance is cozy, I grab a corner seat, prop up my book, order a pot of tea, and read while eating. The lunch menu is VERY affordable, much more so that the other spots in the area (you get a small appetizer and soup and side of rice with your entree. The portion size is great, and I often have leftovers that I take home. My absolute favorite fish is the spicy numbing fish. It's perfectly seasoned but spicy enough (no, your mouth doesn't go numb unless you're highly sensitive to chili peppers). Michael the waiter is such a sweetheart, the entire staff is kind and accommodating.
Finally, an amazing Chinese restaurant in the neighborhood. They have the very best, beautifully presented food and always excellent service. Try the Dan Dan noodles, Peking Duck, Chicken with black bean sauce, Hot Pot, fish soup. Lot’s more! Never oily, but clean food. My friends and I love it! Run-don’t walk to For U!
I was pleasantly surprised by the food. It was AMAZING! We got spicy pig ears, shredded chicken, black pepper sizzling beef and snow peas. The taste was so authentic and quality of food was top notch. It is now one of my fav Szechuan Chinese restaurants! Would definitely come back again to try the other dishes. Remember to bring cash for a discount.
We have been several times and each time I’m shocked the joint is mostly empty, even on a Saturday night. This makes it especially appealing for us because we bring two young children in a large stroller, and they always accommodate it. I hope they can get more business as the food is excellent. They have specials each night of the week. The shredded potatoes are lightly cooked, excellently seasoned, and honestly could make a meal on its own they are so tasty. We enjoy the dry pot and cumin beef. The ginger onion steamed fish fillets are perfect for the mild palates of our children. The soup dumplings are juicy and the skins not too thick, and the Peking duck dish is great. The menu and cuisine is perfect for those with spicy preferences, but it’s easy to order non spicy items.
New establishment on 3rd Ave/E16th st.,easy walk from L train, fine Chinese dining with large capacity for families or solo, quiet & calm, surrounded by classical music, audible enough without overwhelming volume, attentive server welcomes walk-in diners, also frequented by neighborhood patrons for pick-up & take-out. Tasty Vegetable Fried rice and Tofu-seaweed soup $20
We had a wonderful event at For U, the food is absolutely delicious, I keep thinking about the cucumber salad it’s so crunchy and tastes so good, the sesame noodles are flavorful and so good, delicate and delicious version of that dish, the best I have ever had. And the Peking duck is divine. It’s a wonderful place for a party, they work with you to make it really special. The atmosphere is very relaxing and the space is warm and beautiful. We had a wonderful time and will go back for dinner very soon.
Food is incredible! We had the wood ear mushroom salad, chicken in garlic sauce, Peking Duck and spicy fish soup. Everything was amazing but the duck was our favorite. Skin was super crispy and the meat was juicy and tender. It comes with duck bone soup which was amazing as well. Can’t wait to come back!
Amazing food, even better customer service!!! Came here when it was snowing like crazy and felt right at home. Sesame chicken with white rice was INCREDIBLE. And the pork dumps are homemade!!
This restaurant combines friendly faces with the right energy. The service was excellent and everyone was willing to assist! They respect food by using good products. We were impressed by every single plate. If in this neighborhood, I'll revisit this place.
Dropped in for a late-ish dinner on a Tuesday night. It was pretty quiet and we got served nice and fast. Good food. Our favorites were the Dan Dan Noodles, Cold Sesame Noodles, String Beans, and the Twice Cooked Pork Belly. I thought the pea shoots needed more seasoning and the Sichuan dumplings were a bit flat and could use more filling. My co diner was very happy to have good new place in her neighborhood.
Had such a great experience here! You have to ask for Mike to be your server when you go! He is so welcoming and a great worker! The food is spicy and delicious. As a spicy lover, I was very pleased with all the dishes. Of course you can ask to modify the spice level if you want more or if you want less or are dining with people who cannot handle spice, there are other dishes that are more mild on the menu. The pricing is great, the food is great and the service was impeccable! Thank you so much! I will definitely be back!
Ah this place was so yummy to get some authentic Chinese food. I really got to fine out what I liked and what just wasn’t for me. I personally believe all the dishes were amazing. There was one dish I personally just didn’t have the taste buds for but my friend really loved it so it might be your thing might not. The entire atmosphere was so nice and calming. I love how they had a sink separate for the bathroom so you don’t take up a toilet to wash your hands. Super nice and good pricing.
Had a great and lovely first time experience here. Glad I finally managed to go and hope to return again soon. I always liked what I saw from the outside, but was really impressed with the presentation of the food and the kindness and gentleness of the waiters Just a warning for those people sensitive to spice. The hot and sour soup was the spiciest I’ve ever had. Last but not least it’s also a great place for anybody who’s thinking about opening a restaurant to visit and be inspired by. For instance, it’s so nice how they present each table a relatively elegant water carafe with lemon. …. The only thing that might’ve made the experience even more enjoyable would have been if they offered a complementary hot pot of tea. (Less and less Asian restaurants do this, but I always really like that when they do. Plus I think it helps ensure people come back to a good restaurant.).
So glad we found this hidden gem conveniently located next to Union Square. It's definitely one of the city's most exquisite, authentic, and delicious Chinese(Sichuan)restaurants. While portions aren't massive, they're perfectly satisfying and tastefully decorated with an artist’s touch. We ordered spicy pork feet, Peking duck (accompanied by a delightful duck soup, a pleasant surprise), and bamboo with wood ear – every single dish was a culinary delight. The service was also incredibly welcoming. It’s perfect for both Asian and non-Asian palates, we couldn’t be happier with our experience and will definitely go back.
Authentic Szechuan cuisine at its finest, extremely reasonable prices, and the service was absolutely fantastic! They were incredibly friendly and extremely accommodating. We ordered Dan Dan noodles, dumplings in hot sauce, chef’s special lo mein, Kung pao chicken: each dish was delicious! We’re only staying in the area for a week and we’re tempted to go back multiple times 🤤🤤🤤
Another awesome Sichuan entry in NYC. Enormous portions, super tasty. Our favorite was the Maoxue Wong, which was basically a bunch of tripe, offal, spam and potatoes in a chili oil, with some random other goodies thrown in there. I would suggest sticking to one big stew and a couple of small dishes for two people, not 3 giant stews like we ordered.
The place was empty when we arrived only takeout orders were waiting to be picked up. I always wish restaurants would cater more to patrons when places are empty but it almost never happens. It's free to thank us for trying an empty place that serves off the path food. The food was good but kind of dry, wish sauce was offered with the food.
This is an authentic sichuan cuisine restaurant in the neighborhood. We got the Mapo tofu, sichuan wontons with chili sauce, and the eggplant/green beans. Everything was tasty and we had leftovers to bring home. The restaurant is attractive and the presentation of the food is enticing. The server was especially nice.
You can reserve a table. Seating is comfortable, and the room is not noisy, with well-spaced tables. The waiters are nice, and accommodating. The table water is quite good. Most importantly the food is good to excellent. My own bias is to avoid the Peking Duck, mostly because there are may be more interesting dishes on the menu.
It is nice to have old school Chinese cheap eats in this area, especially for lunch. The hot sour soup was good! Things in general were made well here. I had to mention that the rice was particularly cooked at the right level! The service was attentive, no complaints! The price was very reasonable for lunch. Hard to find these days.
Came for dinner with a group of Chinese friends. Food is good but not what I would called Sichuan. I can recommend the Sautéed pea shoots, Peking duck w soup, Cucumber salad and the Mapo tofu. I CANNOT recommend the grilled fish, it was terrible. The decor is honestly bizarre, as my friend put it, a mahjong factory. Service was ok, but dishes were slow to be served.
After 13 years, I think, we're finally back in NYC. And we booked an apartment near Union Square. When I got the address of the apartment, I started to look for good restaurants in the area… on Google maps, of course. Turns out there was quite a few places with good reviews, especially a Chinese restaurant, So do fun. I don’t know why, but, to me, food in the US often means Chinese food… So when we arrived pretty late the first night we dropped the luggage and rushed to try it out. We absolutely loved the dumplings and the fried pork we ordered first but the pasta we had afterwards was quite neutral, unfortunately. The restaurant itself was ok but the service was slow. We waited about 20 minutes between the first dishes and the pasta so My son fell asleep and I had to eat with him in my arms. I’m always happy to hold my son in my arms but… The waiter’s language skill were not optimal either… Nevertheless, overall, it was not a bad experience at all. The fact that it was my first night back in NYC probably helped a lot 😉 Quality & taste: 8/10 Quantities: 8/10 Atmosphere: 7/10 Originality: 8/10 Ratio price / quality: 9/10 Service: 5/10 How I felt afterwards: 7/10 More on IG @runnerandfoodie
Good food, efficient and attentive service. I liked the cold noodles with sesame, the flavor was present and delicate; these noodles didn't look as pretty as the tricolored noodles on the menu. The grilled Sichuan fish was good and filling, but not as spicy as I expect from Sichuan food, and somewhat lacking mala spice.
Overpriced underwhelmed never going back got beef lo mein wasted $16 for a bunch of spaghetti with no meat. This place is a joke 4.8
I enjoyed the food enough that I took the leftovers home. Next day, after eating half of the leftover, I discovered what I can only describe as a cigarette butt in the food 🤮 . It was a synthetic cylindrical piece of about half an inch long. I broke it apart to get a better look and found soft fussy filter type material inside. - see pictures I believe that tobacco can be an legitimate herb ingredient but they should have removed the filter.
"Sichuan Cold Noodle" is just spicy cold noodle, but its Chinese word writes "Pulled Chicken Cold Noodle", uh??? Find nothing related to chicken until completed the meal. And ordered in the evening they even didn't give the chopstick or fork, used straws instead of the embarrass by using hands. OMG For reply I ordered through Ubereats many many times, they don't even have the option notify "no disposable items", and each merchant gives for free. Are we in the same system?
