Nice place, VERY happy they enforced a laptop ban. The furniture is already a bit large for the space so having a bunch of tech “creatives” posting up for two hours and hogging entire tables was wack. Vibes are much better now - a bold move that paid off 🫡
For years this have been my favorite place to get breakfast. The egg and moroncan sausage probably a close tiento best with the açaí bowls. Great space now that they have taken a much larger space. Updated food items make exploring the menu all over a great experience. Despite the really long lines this place is worth it.
Beautifully decorated places and the vibe in general is very relaxing! The food is great especially the shashuka and Moroccan sausage omelette platter! We have both of the above and were really satisfied. The coffee can be better as it was just okay. The chicken curry salad was great too! Overall a great place to unplug and enjoy a fine breakfast
Quick and friendly service. Reasonably priced. The two açaí bowls I got were delicious! And I was able to customize them for my dietary needs. The place has a super earthy feel which is nice and comforting. Came here on a Friday night and there was plenty of seating. This place was a real gem.
This place is such a gem. I felt a sense of comfort immediately as I walked in! The menu is extensive and everything sounds good, it was hard for me to choose, but I loved that everything was fresh and healthy and there was something for everyone. I got the soup of the day (curry lentil) and a turkey bacon quiche and it was everything I was looking for. My friend got the avo toast which also had hummus on it, yum!! We sat outside because it was packed inside but the decor was so homey and I just loved the vibe. Will definitely come back another time to get some work done and eat great food!!
I like the atmosphere, the food, and they have the most delicious mocha I've ever tasted in my life, and I'm not exaggerating. Chai latter is delicious too.
It’s a very atmospheric cafe and the smoothies are delicious! It is $6 for a small (unsurprising, inflation) but it isn’t watered down at all which is very nice. Mini fruit tart is expensive but it was a good snack for me since I had lunch. It’s a nice place to sit and read a book or get some work done, and there are bigger tables and outdoor seating if you’re visiting with someone else. Very relaxing and the staff are really nice!
Pause is home to the best chai on the lower east side. They also have superfood bowls, green juice, purple detox juice, egg and smoked turkey platters, lox bagels and a whole host of baked goodies. The atmosphere is bohemian, warm, and welcoming. Its hard on Saturday and Sunday when locals pack the dining area. Just hang tight you might be able to wedge between the bar and bench seating.
Pause Cafe is a coffee shop and juice bar on the Lower East Side of New York City. It has a Moroccan aesthetic and serves comfort food, including: Açaí bowls, Salads, Pastries, Breakfast and lunch sandwiches, Carrot cake. Pause Cafe also has a great selection of coffee and tea. I loved the chai and pastries. It's a hidden gem. Pro tip: if you don't get a reservation for Clinton st, get in here and have some amazing food/drinks.
shakshuka was unlike any i've tried before, but it was really nice still, the atmosphere of this place is wonderful, and the prices are really good. also i was a clown and didn't know the shakshuka came in two pieces even though one of the girlies explained it to me, so if you're reading this i'm so sorry
I came here for a late lunch around 2:30PM on a Sunday. The place was pretty crowded but I was able to find a table to sit at. More tables were available outside. I got the lemon curd crepe with an iced chai. I'm glad I only got one crepe as the portion was really generous and filling. The crepe was very good and I'll definitely come back to try their other options. You order at the counter and they bring the food to your table, which I liked and found convenient. Restroom is available and clean. Fresh water fountain also available next to the counter.
Got take out and it held up great! Delicious turkey sandwich and chicken salad! Soup wasn’t my favorite, but that’s on me for ordering the soup of the day without checking what it was! Everything was packaged thoughtfully and carefully. Can’t wait to go back for dine in!
Excellent little Moroccan cafe with a delicious variety of (chai) teas and delicacies. Their pastries are fresh and their service is friendly. If you have a difficult time choosing from their menu, they offer a superfood latte sampler. Great place to go with friends, for a casual date, and also to enjoy by oneself for a quick bite or drink.
This cafe is freakin awesome! I got the pause egg sandwich, which came on a fluffy nicely toasted roll, with a light layer of beans, avocado, eggs, and a spicy sauce on the side. They have good wifi, an outdoor cafe area (which was too cold unfortunately given the time of year), AND - importantly - a very nice large bathroom with a scented candle *cue airhorn noise* this place is, simply, fire
The staff especially Yosel who was like the best staff ever, super friendly with his big smile. They made me feel very welcome on my 1st visit. You can find an amazing vibe and delicious variety of food and coffee in this excellent little Moroccan Cafe. Casablanca Sandwich is amazing! I will sure come here again and again.
In the heart of a crowded city this place brings on a very special taste of food. The place appears to be small, yet they have alot of seatings on the inside and outside. We sat inside. It is very authentically and beautifully decorated. The service was super fast and convenience. They have variety of food/desert/drink selections. Check the menu before you enter. The staff is very professional and courteous. I just want to highlight one of their workers which is KATELYN. she went above and beyond to make sure that we are happy and satisfied with our food/seatings/and service. She is so sweet and enthusiastic. I appreciate her level of professionalism. This a great place will definitely be marked as one of my favorite spot to REVISIT. Thank you PAUSE cafe. Thank you KATELYN
The decor is worth visiting this cafe for-beautiful Moroccan inspired paintings and accent pieces especially the mosaic water fountain. The food and staff were also absolutely amazing! Highly recommend their cheese scallion scone toasted with butter-one of the best scones I’ve ever had. Would definitely go back when I visit NYC again!
Electric and energetic vibe from this place. Excellent for working, socializing, eating, or 1:1 chats. Don’t expect a quiet atmosphere. Coffee is reasonably priced here as well. They do have wifi, but it didn’t work when I was there. They have a selection of food and coffee (think healthy options). There are outlets along the back wall if you need a charge.
Loved the place, the atmosphere, the food and the coffee. Personnel was also very friendly, helpful and patient. I got a smoothie bowl and it was one of the best looking and tasting in my life. I will definitely come back to try something different. Be aware of the crowd, trying to find a place to sit $8 small acai bowl $2.75 small americano ✅restrooms
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Every visit feels like a treat. The staff’s hospitality is warm and genuine, always greeting us with a smile that eases the day. The chef’s commitment to fresh ingredients and refined flavors shines through every dish. With music that relaxes the soul, this place offers not just a meal, but a truly uplifting experience. Hamid
I just finished eating the chicken avocado sandwich on the homemade brioche bun, I added harissa hot sauce, fontina cheese, tomato & cucumbers. Soo DELISH. Best sandwich I've ever had in NYC thus far. Thank you!!
Lovely place to sit and work, love the large table in the center. As someone who only ever gets chai at any cafe, their chai is absolutely amazing!! Edit: came back for the food, and their Breakfast Glory tastes great and has a generous portion! Had enough to pack back home for a second meal 😋 the bathroom is also surprisingly cute and cozy 🤣
Big love for Pause 💖 Super lovely staff, all-around delicious menu, and they maintain a great vibe — the fact that it still had a warm, approachable atmosphere even when they allowed laptops in the space says a lot to me.. and even with the frequent waves of touristy types it’s v chill & pleasant.. appreciate how they had the World Cup subtly projected on the wall when that was going down.. Their b&w cookies rock & I’m in love with the Tofusion and Energy Buzz smoothie.. like, I haven’t shut up about this smoothie for years.. I woke up craving one & it’s silly how it’s made my day before I’ve even consumed it ~
Beautiful and cozy cafe in the lower east side of New York City. The decorations were nice plus they have a decent sized and clean bathroom for the city. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The staff were great. The wait time was appropriate. We got the Superfood Blue Iced Chai Latte with Oatmilk. It was amazing! Plus, the green bowl was good but portion could be bigger. Overall, the experience was great and we will definitely visit again.
Where do I even start? This is my favorite cafe, and I wish I lived closer to it to be able to get breakfast from here everyday. The turkey cheddar sandwich is made in homemade Moroccan bread and it is super delicious along with the sauce they use, it is to die for! The service here is phenomenal! I met some of the staff and I mentioned I was also of Moroccan descent and we had such wholesome conversations. It really made me feel like I was back home visiting family! The decor of the place is very intricate and exquisite, from the Moroccan zellige fountain to the Moroccan paintings they have on the walls. 1000/10 would recommend this cafe to anyone in New York and even outside of NY! I’ll be back soon Pause Cafe! <3 Dima Maghreb
Visited this cafe and had a mixed experience. The coffee was excellent - strong and flavorful, but the shakshuka was disappointing even though it looks good ;( The overall vibe is wonderful, and despite the usual line, it moves quickly. The place is warm and inviting, although the tables are a bit too close together. I'd recommend it for a coffee, but perhaps not for breakfast.
I had breakfast at this lovely Moroccan café and it was such a great! The food was delicious, fresh, and full of authentic flavors. The atmosphere was cozy and welcoming, and the staff were super friendly and attentive. Everything felt so genuine — it really reminded me of Morocco. Definitely one of the best spots to enjoy a traditional Moroccan meal. Highly recommended! 🌿☕🍞 Thank you Hamada and khawla ✌🏻❤️
One of the best spots around. Great juice, food, and coffee. Amazing atmosphere and decor. It can be busy but the line moves pretty fast as the staff give great and efficient service. Love taking visiting guests to this spot for coffee or breakfast. Menu favorites are the Pause sandwich and the shashuka… great flavor and great value!
Such a cute little coffee shop. I only came here for pastries from TGTG but they all exceeded my expectations and hope to come back for more pastries and try their coffee! The bags are also really cute
I couldn’t get a table at Clinton St Bakery on mid morning of February 14th, so looking for elsewhere for quick meal at the least, I saw this place across the street. Walking in the decor was comforting and colorful, with it being quite busy. Despite busy, I was met with warmth and smiles from staff. I decided to grab a pistachio croissant and chai latte. I decided to change my mind on having it to go and decided to dine in as I had found an empty table. I thought it would have been a hassle as I inquired some time after having ordered. However, again I was met with a smile and my order was warm and fresh when it came to my table. When in area in town again, I will most definitely stop in again and support.
The café has a distinct Moroccan charm. The coffee and cappuccino were delicious, and the Moroccan cookies were amazing—my favorite was the almond one. I loved the round mosaic tables, the beautiful paintings, and the large decorative vases—such thoughtful details. Friendly staff, cozy atmosphere, and lovely vibes make it a perfect spot to relax. We’ll definitely be coming back to try more!
Fantastic community cafe with Moroccan inspired food. Great place to grab a delicious sandwich or more substantive meal for lunch or breakfast, plus pastries for any time of day. They still don’t allow laptops, to encourage conversation, which I think works well. It was packed when we went, but we’re still able to get a seat outside without much effort. I highly recommend trying out any of their platters or the New York Combo. Both were incredible! Can’t wait to come back soon.
Regardless of how much I miss anything Arabic in this city, but this Moroccan Café truly stands out on its own. The food is amazing, the drinks are excellent, and the hospitality is unmatched. Everyone who works there makes you feel genuinely welcome everything is honestly a 10 out of 10.
This is hands-down the best cafe I’ve ever visited, and I’ve explored cafes across the US, France, Portugal, and Thailand. While many places excel in one or two areas, this one earns a perfect 5/5 in every category: outstanding food, impeccable service, and a wonderful and relaxing atmosphere. The drinks are fantastic, the food is exceptional, and the prices are remarkably reasonable for the quality you receive. After experiencing this gem, chains like Starbucks just taste bland, feel soulless, and seem wildly overpriced by comparison. Highly recommended!”
We love this place. Great coffee. We had some small bites (GF, Vegan) that were yummy. But the breakfasts and crepes also looked amazing and we will be back to try them. Not too crowded. Relaxed great vibe.
It's honestly one of my favorite spots now. I had a chai latte there that was, no exaggeration, the best I’ve ever had in my life—perfectly spiced, creamy, and just so comforting. And the barista guy? Full of life, energy, and warmth—it completely made my day.He had all of the "rhymes" when calling the names for coffee! LOL The whole vibe of the café is exactly what the owners intended: no laptops, no phones, just a moment to actually pause and have real conversation. It’s such a refreshing change in a city that’s always on the go. I loved that chai latte so much that the next time I was back in New York, I went into the city before work—a full two-hour detour—just to grab seven of the latte mixes to take home, and a few to send to friends who went with us the first time. We loved it that much.
Absolutely LOVE this cafe!! My husband and I were on vacation in NYC and we came to this spot almost every day for breakfast. Their prices are affordable and their menu is so delicious. We got sandwiches, crepes, smoothies, and pastries here and everything turned out so good. They also have lots of seating, so it's the perfect spot for hanging out with friends. The employees are very friendly and the atmosphere is so cute. I love this place so much, I can't wait to come back the next time I'm in the city.
All I can say is I came here to get brunch with a friend and I came right back again the next day because it was so good… Food here is fantastic, got the shakshuka first day with an iced latte and then got the pause cafe breakfast plate the next day with a dirty chai. Prices are reasonable, food is so tasty and flavorful. The service is great, all staff were so friendly :) Atmosphere is 10/10, it’s calming and relaxing and the decor makes you feel like you’re truly transported to a different country 💛. Pro tip: it’s not a huge place and it is wildly popular on the weekends so be prepared to have to wait for a table if you are looking to dine in.
Great little cafe with lots of affordable options. They had an excellent array of pastries as well as about items and smoothie bowls. I went with the Pause Cafe Egg sandwich and loved it. It was super delicious! My son had a chocolate croissant and I was happy with the price tag on that at under $5 after having paid up to ten at other places. Husband had a bagel. Great array of choices.
This place is my favorite coffee shop in the city. The coffee is absolutely delicious. I always have a black Americano without milk. And my boyfriend always orders a cappuccino with almond milk, the presentation is always impeccable and always very pleasing to the eye. The food is delicious and very provocative, everything always looks fresh and well presented. It is a unique place in the city. The dishes, glasses mugs and cups are delicately selected in beautiful Moroccan style. I love that it gives a very special, unique and authentic atmosphere and feeling. And they even sell some Moroccan beautiful handicrafts such as glasses, plates, cups, oils, and chai teas. Super cozy and always warm cause the smell of freshly ground and brewed coffee, simply delicious. It's a super nice place to sit, read, write, and have a good conversation with friends. It has a great morroccan atmosphere, I love the music. Computers and laptops not allowed.

Visited this spot for breakfast on a Sunday. It was pretty busy but they move fast with taking orders and getting people their drinks/food. We got the shakshuka with halal beef sausage and a half egg, cheese, Turkey bacon sandwich. We also ordered a chai latte with an espresso shot and a matcha latte. The dirty chai was good but the matcha was pretty milky. The shakshuka comes with a side salad and a bun, which was also good. We paid about $38 for everything so I think it was fair. They have a decent number of tables inside and outside but you have to seat yourself. Overall, I’d say this spot is nice but it was nothing special but definitely visit if you’re in the area!
Moroccan inspired plates, also has sandwiches, juices, smoothies, and coffee drinks. Shakshuka came with potatoes, side salad and bread. Currently doesn’t allow laptops or iPads inside but very cute and worth a visit Update: I got the shakshuka a second time within a week and the eggs were way overcooked- had a fully cooked yolk like hard boiled eggs. Much worse the second time
When oriental meets hipster meets Morocco kind of a Coffeeshop. I was excited to try their quinoa bowl with Marquez sausage (one of my favorites type of sausages). Since it’s self service approach , we ordered at the cashier and got get the buzzer. They told us that the buzzer will notify us when food and drinks are ready however only the food was ready when we got buzzed and while I was waiting for the drinks (coffees), my food got cold outside which was very disappointing. Service in general wasn’t great. Had to go back and forth like 4 times (maybe more); When I set down I noticed that they didn’t provide us utensils so I had to go back again and ask for it. Then when I tried my lavender latte, I immediately spotted that they forgot to put the lavender syrup. Food was ok but it was very hard to judge or appreciate since it was so cold but the time I was able to start eating.
Who would’ve known this place would be so packed on a Thur morning? Almost every seat was taken by the time I rolled in, but was able to squeeze into the big center table by the time I got my drink. I used to live in the Middle East, so this place really felt nostalgic. Love the attention they put into the interior details. The fruit in the acai fruit bowl was pretty sour and unripe, but hey, the other food looks great 😆
We were waiting to get seating for a brunch place near by in the same street , while we were waiting we wanted to get some coffee and this cute little cafe was right across the street and we stepped in to grab a cup of coffee. Once we stepped into this cafe it was like in a cozy place away from the bustling streets of new york, quiet and peaceful. The setting of cafe was so warm and welcoming. There were people , it was busy yet we could find the calmness. We just ordered a cup of cafe mocha, which was a good one, I enjoyed it , however it could have been a bit stronger in the coffee flavor. People were ordering different sorts of salads , sandwiches and so on which did really looked great. As we have already reservations made at a brunch place, we had to skip this time. I would highly recommend this cafe for someone who would enjoy a nice , quiet , alone time with good food options. The name of the cafe makes total justice, pausecafe, its like literally can take a pause from your life, the vibe of this place makes it possible to pause and relax for a while from your busy life.
Ingredients are very fresh, they have very healthy food choices and interesting juices. I loved the salad and the fresh smoothies, would definitely recommend, everything was super yummy. The cafe itself has a very cute vibe, although it can get busy at times and there is not a lot of space.

I went to Pause for brunch and some leisure reading. The place was crowded and had a hip vibe to it. The staff is very kind [unlike other nyc spots] and yet efficient. Pause offers some seats with power points as well so it can be a good spot to camp and work out of. Coming to the food however: I ordered a Shakshuka with tofu, after checking the recommendations online. It was overcooked and sticking to the pan. The ingredients seemed quite fresh but didn't enjoy the food as much. I also ordered an iced oat late and the Coffee was quite nice imo!
If a barista is audibly sighing at me and being rude I have to give three stars. The woman who opens has officially done this twice. Did I do something? Full disclosure though I am from the south and am used to people being kind. Otherwise, it’s a great place and the food is great. I recommend getting some friendlier employees since it’s a customer facing role.
I was in town and came for a quiet place to work and this place is very charming. The location is nice, right off E Houston St and has ample space with an extensive menu. Here's the thing....they don't allow you to use laptops or ipads in the shop. What a bummer and I wish that were advertised because I wouldn't have come at all. A local explained that they had frequent complaints from locals who couldn't grab a seat because of all the working from the shop...however....a blanket rule like this in a coffee shop seems like a lot. Rules are rules....I didn't get to dine here but can attest that everything looks amazing and maybe one day when I'm not looking to work I'll be able to come back.
The decor and set up of the cafe is great. I ordered the Pause Egg Sandwich and it was okay. Kind of small for the price.

Honest review: Iced drip Coffee: tastes like deli coffee watered down. Turkey bacon was cold, eggs were cold, bread was stale Nothing was seasoned, not even salt and black pepper. Its more of a do your work/homework spot. I think it looks good, great for asesthic pictures but food just doesn’t taste good. Im sorry, i really tried to convince myself but what a disappointment. Seating is awkward and is very busy. Everything looks good but doesnt taste like it looks.
Truly an underwhelming, expensive experience. I ordered delivery for the first time Thanksgiving morning. Shakshuka… except to actually GET a real shakshuka was not the default. That was +$4, and what they are actually are offering as a baseline on the item is a half shakshuka sandwich? Was confused and called to clarify. Greeted by “What”…. No introducing themselves. I explained my question and got such a curt response. She was very interested in explaining to me that for the Shakshuka item the default is a sandwich (not in the name), but I should have ordered the Platter for the normal actual dish? I thought platter meant for sharing. I tried to just explain how it was confusing and again, she talked over me instead of just noting the feedback. Anyway, $38 for a very mid shakshuka sandwich…, the iced chai tasted as an iced coffee and lacked the spiced flavor imo. The blueberry muffin was fine. I wouldn’t go eat from there again.
I'm wondering why my smoothie and my acai bowl and my sandwich is not tasting the same ? as before \nI been goin to this cafe for almost 2 years I'm in a rush every morning and I always get my food…
I would not know how the food taste, my order was cancelled as I was on my way. I was looking forward to tasting their food. Oh well, there are plenty of choices, just placed this review to remember not to waste my time with this place again.
PLEASE READ IF YOU’RE CONSIDERING ORDERING FOOD FROM THE MENU. Atmosphere and inside is nice, playing a lot of music with repetitive lyrics. Aside from that, they literally got my friend’s order wrong TWICE - like you didn’t think we would notice you just put some salmon in another menu item? I appreciate that the server was nice when ordering and the drinks are good, but if we’re not getting the main food/entree that we paid for, then I don’t think it’s worth our time. Just to add onto that, she paid $2 extra for this “salmon” crepe (supernova). Maybe it’s just the morning confusion, but I would expect a little more, especially since she paid extra for basically 7 slices of smoked lox. Might as well just go to a sushi place instead. Also, their grain bowls and pastries come cold - just a FYI. Hopefully everyone else’s experience is better since they just order drinks anyways.
I have been waiting to try this spot of since 2018. Today I finally got to try out their food. The restaurant is beautiful so I did expect good service. I asked for an extra side of pesto with my tofu sandwich(that has pesto on it) only to get a dry sandwich and barely an side of pesto. I was very disappointed with that dry sandwich. The salad made it worthwhile thankfully. They can definitely do better than this.
I live in Middletown, and I stopped by this café to spend about 30 minutes on my laptop to finish a project. I was told that laptops are not allowed at all and that I had to close my computer immediately. I was also warned that this is a “strict rule.” This rule makes no logical sense. A phone is also an electronic device. If laptops are banned, then phones should be banned as well. Otherwise, the policy is completely inconsistent and unreasonable. Customers should not be told how or with which device they are allowed to spend their time, especially when they are quiet, respectful, and not bothering anyone. I was not taking calls, not watching videos, and not disturbing the space in any way. This feels like a management problem, not a customer problem. The manager seriously needs to reconsider these policies, because this kind of attitude pushes people away rather than welcoming them. Very disappointing experience.
I have been a customer of Pause since they opened as I live only a few blocks away. I have sent the management a few emails over the years, mostly recently, and avoided leaving a review given I always loved this cafe. No more. The food is delicious when you sit and eat it at the restaurant. However, due to their new no laptop policy, I just can't burn the time not working (its rare for this kind of cafe to have such a policy). Saying this, I strongly advise against ordering delivery. The food is delivered consistently cold, mushy, put together without care (they cut my wrap into one 85% piece and one 15% piece). Upon opening it, it's just unappetizing and tastes completely different than when ordering in the store. This place used to be so great before they expanded into a larger venture. It just feels like they are not even trying when you aren't there in person. I think this is the end of my ~13 years at Pause. A sad day..
