Fly N Fish is a popular seafood spot known for fresh oysters, seafood platters, and friendly staff like Vince and Ariel. The clam chowder, shrimp tacos, and fish and chips are highly recommended. It can get crowded and noisy, especially during dinner hours.
Tip: Make a reservation, especially if visiting during peak hours. Happy hour offers great prices on oysters.

Excellent service! Delicious Cioppino! 😋 Worth the 2 1/2 hour drive. Beautiful view of the beach and sunset. Luckily there was a cancellation and we didn't have to wait. A little expensive but it was a treat.💜
Great location, good menu with items that I will try next time. Daily specials look interesting, had oysters and wine. Friendly service, will be back.
Fabulous place to eat, ended up getting there a little late after a long drive and was greeted with the best service and food. Kiersten took fabulous care of us, and was super helpful and accommodating of all our needs. Food was delicious, as were the drinks :) highly recommend!
This place is really good and lives up to the positive reviews. We ordered the Fra Diavolo (picture attached), Cioppino, fish and chips, scallops and shrimp scampi, clam chowder, sirloin burger, fried calamari, and seafood salad. Everything was so delicious. The seafood salad was light and fresh. The Cioppino and Fra Diavolo were perfectly seasoned and not spicy. We will be coming back.
Wow, wasn't expecting this from a tiny place along the beach. The energy, the smells, the flavors. Was a great way to enjoy a meal with friends.
Crab cakes were delightful. Service was top-notch, loved everything about it. They have a sign out front, which is basically where you stand. They greeted us promptly. Don't be the people that just walk in and almost get hit with the door, we watched people do it twice rather than wait by sign like most others! I'd go again for sure!
Amazing food, service, and location!! The cioppino is out of this world. The artichoke was cooked perfectly and so flavorful, and the oysters were fresh and delicious. Garrett and Annalise provided excellent recommendations and service. Highly recommend this spot! We will definitely be back.
Food is exceptional, staff is pleasant & attentive, ambiance always a win & well location is epic.
Fun place with great food and drinks! It had been recommended by a neighbor and didn't disappoint. Bartender Tony took good care of us, too. Great place!
I often visit Newport Beach for a quick weekend escape, and without fail, I find myself craving crab cakes and fresh oysters. Fly N Fish Oyster Bar always hits the spot—it’s the perfect place to satisfy both my cravings and my taste buds. We always choose a seat by the window, facing the beach, so we can soak in the ocean view and watch the sunset. It’s become a tradition now: every time we’re in Newport, this is our go-to spot to unwind, enjoy great seafood, and take in the beautiful coastal scenery. If you're looking for a relaxing dining experience with fresh, flavorful seafood and an unbeatable view, this place delivers every time.
Amazing little restaurant. We'll located. We'll sorted food selections, incredible oysters!
Fantastic evening at the Fly N Fish. Place was packed but there was a wait time of only 20 mins so we had a cloudy IPA at the bar and were then given a lovely table at the window by the guy at the door. We had a great chat with some locals who were waiting for a table. We shared half a dozen oysters, 2 each of 3 varieties and were able to split a main (very substantial portions for those used to UK size) of the Vongole linguini that was recommended by a customer at the bar. We finished with a bread pudding that was delicious. The service was impeccable throughout and despite the crowded restaurant we never felt rushed ( rare in a US restaurant in our experience). We’ve been in California 2 weeks on this trip and this was the best meal and service we’ve had. Deservedly very popular.
Visiting CA for few days. Randomly stumbled across this place while walking the beach. The shucked oysters were delicious! Got the Peninsula Paloma drink which was very tasty. Bartender was attentive to everyone. Nice spot off the beach. If I come back to CA I'll def swing by again!
Food was good, not the greatest. We got clam chowder and it had more of a bacon taste, but still good. Coconut shrimp was good too. We were there for the views mostly! Great view and fun bar
Great spot for dinner. Step outside and watched the sun set. Oysters top shelf. All service fantastic.
We stopped by to have lunch earlier this afternoon on what turned out to be a gorgeous day ! We walked up and eventhough it looked like the wait was going to be a while, we were lucky and were sat at the bar which offered full service. Immediately we were greeted by Vincent the bartender who offered to take our drink order immediately. We ordered a shrimp ceviche which was tasty , the burger we ordered was absolutely delicious and we also ordered the Fra Diavolo which is the Ciapppino but they added linguini and that was absolutely amazing too. Besides all of the food being tasty what I was most happy and satisfied with was the attentive and freidnfly service. There was an older gentlemen who I'm assuming was probably tbe owenr. He was the one who brought our food to us. When he saw that we ordered the Fra Diavolo he asked if we wanted the bibs so we didn't splash it on our clothes. He brought the bibs over and was kind enough to put it on and tie it for us. That was nice and I feel he went the extra mile. Besides Vincent being attentive there was also another gentleman behind the bar who also asked us numerous times if everything wasokay! I highly recommend this establishment. The ambiance was chill and relaxing too. Thank you all for making it an absolute amazing experience!
We stopped in for lunch on a fall Thursday and enjoyed the food and service. The oysters were a delicious starter, I enjoyed the fish and chips while my wife enjoyed her blackened fish tacos. I'm sure this small place is packed on weekends or summer days.
Good food, nice ambience! All the staff are very helpful on explaining everything. Parking is available in front but you have to wait a lil bit and it's a pay parking. You can dine inside or outside. Mask up or Mask off, just be safe and maintain social distance still if you can. This Resto is located at The Newport Hotel fronting the beach. Shoutout to Aeriel very helpful for orders. Thank you!
Excellent place to get fresh seafood and enjoy a drink with an ocean view - particularly in the evening during the sunset. We got the chef's calamari, level 5, mahi mahi sandwich, and blackened mahi mahi with scalloped potatoes and coleslaw. The food exceeded expectations; especially the chef's calamari. Only downside is that the noise level can be a little bit high.
We were in town from Seattle staying on the beach and walked into town to find a spot for dinner. We were drawn into Fly N Fish by the open window, smells, and how packed it was. The gentleman out front was super friendly and even though they were very busy told us “no problem I will get you a table shortly”. Service was excellent were asked several times if everything was “perfect”, and the glazed salmon was out of this world. My husband got a fried platter which was ok, but I think he regretted not going with a fresh grilled fish. It isn’t a large space so it got a little loud with an obnoxious local swearing and talking at level 1000 but not the restaurants fault. We came back a few nights later with friends for drinks and some apps because we had to try the artichoke and calamari. Again service and food was excellent.
Great food and drinks. We like the Rockefeller oysters and all the seafood choices. Very yum. Try to invite more people and rsvp ahead so that all you hear are familiar voices 😆.
I have been here a few times. The food is good and fast. Drinks are tasty. Overall a great experience. Plus prices are reasonable.
Oysters and ceviche tostadas were both excellent. Excellent service. Reminded me of a New Orleans joint.
Fresh fish, oysters, and atmosphere! Great service, even when our server was triple sat. The Chef's Calamari was the best Calamari dish I've ever had. I ordered it at a heat level 5 and it was exactly what I was expecting with a nice kick but not enough to make me sweat. The crab cakes where fresh and tasty as well!
Got a seat right along the window, so could watch the end of the sunset from our seat! Walked in and got a table within about 20-30 minutes. The cioppino was phenomenal and we were impressed by the mussel selection. Very nice ambiance and attentive wait staff. Great stop along the beach!
Love love love this place! The chef is super cool food food is high-quality. The things I love, the martinis, the blue cheese dressing, the oysters, the crab legs, the location, the bar seating. I can’t find all the pictures of the food I’ve eaten here. During the week especially because of Covid you need to get here before eight to have a decent dining experience. The out side seating is really cool we can thank Covid for that.
Fresh seafood, the oysters were good. Chicken salad was good. The atmosphere was crowded, small and very noisy. It had a bar area. Right off the beach. I recommend it for sure!
Love it! My wife and I went Tuesday night, Lovely food, Clam Chowder was so delicious I do recommended it big time as same as the Grilled Mahi Mahi Tacos, I did search for a place offer Raw Oysters and didn't dissapointed, they were fresh and not too expensive, service by Julie was nice and cool. Five ⭐️
Absolutely amazing Dinner. The wait was going to be 30 minutes so we decided to have a cocktail at the bar (Old Fashioned & Moscow Mule) they were perfect. The bartenders were so friendly we opted to eat at the bar, which was a great decision. All meals are prepared out in the open. We had New Zealand mussels in a cream sauce with French fries on top (Delicious)??!! With Oysters Rockefeller and we shared the Mahi Mahi. Everything was perfect. Keep up the great work. Until next time.
Update: OMG! This place has become our favorite place to eat when we go to California. The service is always excellent!! The food and drinks are the best we have had on the beach. Absolutely a must if you are in L.A., the drive to Newport Beach is a must. My goodness!! This was a great restaurant. We were walking along the beach and just happened upon this restaurant. The service was excellent, our waitress had great attention to detail and wonderful recommendations. Everything tasted so FRESH!! I had the Wild Alaskan Cod Fish Tacos with Pico (it was really good) and my husband had the Cioppino with a side of wild rice. Our server recommended and great Red that paired well with both dishes. Overall great place, great atmosphere. We will definitely dine here again.
Great oysters! Yummy! Clam chowder was pretty tasty. Good vibes here. Couples, groups. My only complaint is there were couples here discussing politics. It's Sunday evening folks, enjoy the drink, food, and company. Wait till Monday morning to chat it up about Fox news & Friends & Newsome at the office.
From the moment you walk in, the vibe is top notch. Friendly smile and welcome from all the crew, after a 13 hour flight from Down Under to LAX. Great advice on the wine and oysters, so just had to indulge with Franks Family Chardonnay and divine oysters from Alaska, Virginia and Washington, with local sea bass as the main course. Newport Beach dining at it's best, and absolutely full at 6pm!
Excellent. It would seem a touristy place on the front line of the ocean and the bar should not be ideal, but my wife and I were pleasantly surprised. First of all, the selection of oysters is impressive. I love them very much, however I didn't know there were so many varieties, second the crab salad is amazing, third the manager, a nice older man, walks around each guest and chats. It's impressive. I don't feel bad about the $300 I left here at all.
The fish is well cooked and fresh. I had the sea bass perfectly done and my friend fish and chip (simple and fried at perfection) . Appetizer we choose mussels ❤️gnummy. The place is small and loud so don’t aspect to talk about the solar system in here 🤣. Enjoy the food and have fun. There are also tv to see games if you are a solo traveling it’s a perfect stop.
In town for some training. Picked this place because the reviews said oceanfront views. Well I got there after dark but I could see the waves from my table. Going to have to come back during daylight. I had the oyster sampler player: Supremes - small but good Kusshi - plump and delicious (my fav) Blue point - flat, plump and yummy. Also had the clam chowder. Not as creamy as I like, but to be fair, I had the sourdough bowl ( which was perfectly crusty, chewy and tangy) so that may have affected it. It was delicious and chock full of clams. Service was friendly and fast. Atmosphere was lively but would be a great date spot. Gonna bring the hubby. Apologies for the pics - did I say great date night spot…which means dark pics. LOL
Try the Sea Bass Soup, it is really something else. The fish was so tender in a broth/soup. Be sure to make reservation. Great location, the sea breeze coming through the window adds a calming effect to the meal. However, when it gets crowded the noise level in the restaurant is quite high. Better pricing when compare to the rest of the restaurant along the beach.
I love this place. They have truly been a blessing in our lives. My parents were unable to come in so they let us bring it to them and return the service setting later the next morning. My dad was a Marine with a lot of pride and this was a great experience for him. My grandchildren love going through the menu one item at a time. Thank you to everyone at the restaurant from kitchen to services to bar staff to greets. The Smith’s Customers for about 8 years
This place is awesome! Wish I had tried it sooner, always fell for the easier spots... It's a bit pricier but worth it for a nice treat! Chowder cup in a CUP- delicious and filling! Calamiri chef style is perfect. Scallops wrapped in bacon with delicious side salad. Tacos- shrimp and fish perfecto!
This place has the best of everything from fresh seafood to sandwiches and HUGE salads with chicken, shrimp or salmon! I really liked the "neighborhood feel" you get when you sit at the bar also! Let me tell you, I've never seen such camaraderie amongst the staff and even the obvious repeat guests...it really is a modern day CHEERS! The restaurant is owned and run by Rick and Steve Loomis who sadly recently passed away. There are so many memories and stories being told, and youll be made to feel right at home with the passion put into every STIFF cocktail and each bite of the chef inspired meals! The CHEF'S CALAMARI is a fan favorite made with a flavorful tequila white wine combined with fresh garlic, onions, ceranbo chilis and chopped tomato and can be made from very mild at a level one, all the way up to insanely spicy at a level 12! The CEDAR PLANK SALMON, MACADAMIA CRUSTED HALIBUT, and MISO SEA BASS will absolutely have you coming back for more as well! I had the pleasure of sitting at the bar top one recently Saturday night and getting to know Andrew. He's gotta be one fo the best bartenders I've ordered from! You HAVE TO try the PENINSULA PALOMA made with fresh grapefruit juice actually squeezed by hand, (the biggest Martini this side of Vegas...NO KIDDING!) or the NEWPORT MARGARITA! I mean..WOW WOW WOW! Its a bar favorite (crafted by VINCE) Freshly muddled citrus blend, tequila, triple sec, and topped off with Gran Marnier! What we all loved is that NONE of the crafted cocktails there were made with any added sugar! If you're looking for a great new place to get drinks and lunch or dinner, you've really gotta try this place on the Balboa Pier! You'll be happy you did! Lunch specials are available from 1130 til 230 Monday thru Friday, and you won't leave hungry! The vibe is casual and laid back with upscale service! Great drinks, incredible food and personalized service that'll have you coming back! Happy hour is a nice bonus too, Monday thru Friday starting at 3pm...beer drafts, and house reds, whites, and DELICIOUS tacos, savory oysters, made from scratch New England Clam Chowder Soup, and the fresh fish Ceviche Tostada PACKED with flavor are just some of the amazing treats you get to choose from! Don't take my word for it, you'll have to go in and see for yourself! Lunch is the best time for first timers maybe looking to get a quick bite sip!
We actually came because we had heard the fish and chips were good here! We were not disappointed! Very very crisp fish and fries were nicely fried. Their sauce is amazing, I’m not even sure what they call it but it seems to be a mixture of horseradish+chilli+vinegar+garlic. We ended up getting oysters also. I like that you can order a sample/flight plate which allows you to try 3 different catches. The oysters were superb! Food is delicious. On another note, we were seated very quickly without reservation at 7pm on a Friday night, which was our great luck! The ambiance is beautiful because you have the ocean staring at you as you dine. The bar does get crowded as the night continues, and it does get noisy inside! Would come back here.
Everything was INCREDIBLE, absolutely delicious! The artichoke wasn’t quite as amazing as other reviews claim, but the Shrimp Tacos were to DIE FOR, and the Clam Chowder was amazing too. Didn’t take photos of all our food we were to hungry lol but we’re adding some. Highly recommend!!! We’ll come back for sure!
I recently visited Fly 'n' Fish, and it was fantastic! This cozy spot offers top-notch food and drinks. Our server, Ariel, was friendly and attentive, while Juan, the busser, kept everything running smoothly. If you're looking for a hidden gem with great hospitality, definitely check this place out! Can't wait to return! I highly recommend the grilled artichoke and fish ceviche tostada—they're delicious! If you're seeking a hidden gem with great hospitality, check it out! Can't wait to return!
We arrived at 3:20 and were informed that they were closing at 4:00 for a private event, but they were happy to serve us if we were ok with being fast. The manager brought out 2 bar stools that had been cleared so we could sit at the bar. We ordered quickly and our food was prepared very fast. Despite the rush, everything was impeccable! The oysters were perfect, the fish and chips and steamers were to die for, and the calamari was very good, although a little on the salty side. I have to commend the service, it was outstanding, especially given the fact that they were preparing for a large private party. Although we were warned that our experience would be rushed, we never felt rushed. We are OTR truck drivers and enjoy fine dining all over the country, and this was, by far, one of the best dining experiences we've had! We will definitely be back the next time we're in the area, absolutely top notch!
The place is usually quite popular, but a little less busy on workdays. The menu is extensive and can accommodate anyone’s taste. The personnel is friendly. Our waitress Taylor was attentive. They have great price for oysters during happy hour, and the oysters were really good and fresh. The fisherman platter looked and tasted great. Sourdough clam chowder was a little different from what we are used to, but is pretty good.
Great Place to eat on the Beach. We had the Shrimp Ceviche, Steamed New Zealand Mussels, Grilled Swordfish & the Newport Seafood Salad. Presentation was amazing and the Mussels were superb. The Swordfish was cooked to perfection. Everything was really good. The staff was extremely friendly and on point with service. It's a small place once inside and can seem cramped (which would be my only negative). This place delivered on all other points though! An unexpected find at the last minute but I would return and will!!
Stumbled in on this place. What a great fish and oyster bar... food is great, drinks well poured, and a great local atmosphere. Understand though, you're paying on the beach prices. Tried to ask for a side of pasta for my Cioppino...luckily Bob shared with me what the cost of PASTA really was ($12). The "chef", aka the guy who sets the prices, needs to get a clue...C'MON MAN
It's a little too packed. However, this is at the end of the foot trail along Newport Beach so it's a good place to rest and get bite at the end of the long walk. The seafood is fresh and delicious, I didn't have to wait that long for the food. Only wished they give more bread for it though. Staffs were nice and helpful, next time I go to California I'd go here again
Great atmosphere right on the boardwalk. We got a few happy hour small plates. The best was the fish taco. Outstanding. The clam chowder was good but I prefer less potatoes and some clams that are big enough to taste. Flavor for the chowder was 4 star. The Oysters Rockefeller was a beautiful presentation but flavor was nothing to rave about. I'd definitely go back for the fish taco. The fish was super fresh, tender and flavorful! Five star for the taco. Beautiful restaurant, definitely a local hot spot.
Great food and great service. 1st time stopping by and will definitely come back. Im from out of the state, but I will definitely stop by the next time im in town. Julie, our server, was on point with everything. She even went out her way to charge our phone. Juan the bus boy wae great also. He was nice and very professional.
This place is on the beach, and is a happening place ! Great drinks, and good bar food. Can't recommend the fish & chips: very greasy overly cooked small fish portions with very thick batter coating. Fires were a different story: very good. However, their New England clam chowder is excellent ! A cup of this will fill you up, and a bowl will be the meal ! The Ceviche was very good, too ! The oysters Rockefeller were very good as well ! Good place to hangout !
I’ve been here twice now. Comfortable relaxed atmosphere. Food has always been good with one exception; though their oysters are fresh, they don’t clean them well, leaving grit and bits of shell in the oysters. Servers were not fully attentive, having to ask twice for things, etc. but bussing was excellent, cleaning table of plates between courses, etc. Love sitting by the windows with the ocean breeze coming in. I’ll go again sometime but, though they are my favorite, I’ll likely pass next time.
Went in without a booking on a Sunday afternoon in summer. Was a bit overcast outside. Were seated pretty quickly at a high table in the middle. It’s pretty crammed in. Served quickly and ordered cocktails. Small glasses for serving size. Ordered baked oysters, they were okay. We ordered the crab salad and the fish and chips. Salad should come in a bowl not on a plate. Otherwise salad tasted okay just difficult to eat on a plate. Fish and chips were fresh and a good portion size. Coleslaw was fresh. Good location (which is worth it if you’re there). Staff were very friendly.
We had good time and the service was good! Our waitress was great, and the service was pretty fast. The oysters were delicious, and the fried shrimp platter was tasty. The only problem was the clam chowder! In the menu it said award wining but in reality it was basically a potato soup with large chunks of potato in it. It really didn’t taste as good. Other than that we were happy.
Took 40m to get a seat. Super loud. Cramped. Tough to get our dietary needs met. Wouldn't go back.
Long wait. Cool place but the food was just good not anything special. Ordered: fish tacos, dozen oysters, fish and chips, calamari, shrimp cocktail, Mahi Mahi, and clam chowder. Clams were chewy and chowder was bland, but sourdough bread bowl was good. Oysters were fresh and good. Chunks of shell in meat though. Fish and chips were crispy outside moist inside. Very good. Mahi Mahi was dry but flavorful. Calamari was very good as well as the dipping sauce. Shrip was great. Atmosphere was awesome. Small hole in the wall, crowded and small but you can see the kitchen cook fresh. Beach view is nice. But did have a long wait (came in at 715pm Friday we were seated at 815pm). Would come back but will try other foods and time.
We’ve been here a number of times and the food is usually good. The service and poor attitude we got from the manager (?) last night made us leave without eating and decide not to come back. We walked up and asked for a table for 2. The host said she’d check for available tables and came back to tell us the 2 seats at the far end of the bar were available and to seat ourselves. As we walked up to the seats and started to sit down a very aggressive lady (manager?) said “those seats are reserved”. I apologize and told her we were told by to host that they were available and to sit there. She gave us a dirty look and said that we needed to check in at the door. Which I told her again that we had. She then followed us back to the host outside and rudely said “they need to wait for a table”. Total lack of communication between staff and we took the punishment for it. We left and went to 21 Oceanfront and had an amazing experience, great service and better food than I’ve ever had at Fly’n Fish. Plus, the view is great and you’re not just staring at a parking lot. We won’t be going back to Fly’n Fish and neither should you.
NOT ADA RECOMMENDED!!! I brought my mother, who has Alzheimer’s and uses a wheelchair, to this establishment. Unfortunately, the experience was very disappointing. They are not ADA friendly and did not make appropriate accommodations. The male staff at the front door were rude when we explained that her wheelchair folds and could easily be placed out of the way. Despite that, they were still reluctant to seat us but eventually allowed us if the wheelchair could be placed in back of the kitchen out of the dining area. Once inside the restaurant finally, the smell was overwhelmingly like rotten fish, and we decided to leave without staying for services. Very disappointing experience — I would not recommend this place.
