Not sure what’s up with some of the bad reviews…I think this place is wonderful. I went recently with my partner for our anniversary (my second time visiting). We both got the steak frites which were well worth the $45. Perhaps, the best meal I’ve ever had at a restaurant. The steak was beautifully cooked and tender and the demi glace was so tasty! Really loved the fries and the rosemary aioli it came with. Would come back just for this dish! Keep it on the menu forever, please! The service was excellent and I like that it tends to be a more mature crowd at the restaurant. Great atmosphere for date night or a quiet lunch with a friend. On my previous visit I had the short rib shepard’s pie, was a great, hearty winter meal.

I have been coming to Marygold’s on Main for various events and meals since they opened and every visit is as exceptional as the last. I’ve been to weddings, dinner parties, tea parties, etc and they have all been phenomenal. Brunch is definitely my favorite; the corn flake French toast is out of this world. The food and craft cocktails are always excellent and they even have a great variety of mocktails to choose from too. I’ve been to one of the high tea events they have thrown and it was fantastic. Such a fun and unique idea to do with friends and family. I could not recommend trying this place enough if you ever find yourself in the Newtown area!

My wife and I had an incredible experience hosting our wedding reception at Marygold’s this past September. We have been longtime customers of Foundry Kitchen and Tavern and Good Old Days Pizza, naturally we were thrilled to host at Marygold’s! For starters, the reception space is beautiful. Being a historic Newtown landmark, every room is full of charm. There is an enormous bridal suite upstairs that my wife had access to from early morning, all the way until the wedding ended. It provided ample space for getting ready and was a convenient space to touch up as the night progressed. We hosted cocktail hour in the bar room and foyer before welcoming guests into the dining room. We loved having separate spaces throughout the night. Each room has a modern flare while still providing a warm and comfortable ambiance thanks to it’s history as an Inn. The food, as always, was top notch. Months later we are still hearing the praises from our guests! Countless people have said it was the best food they’ve ever enjoyed at a wedding. Each passed hors d'oeuvres was better than the next - and they passed until people were full! No need to worry about standing by the kitchen door to ensure you actually get food here - there was plenty to go around! The most difficult part of our wedding was choosing entrees - the tasting we had weeks prior to the wedding was full of delectable options! The pasta, salad and entree courses we chose were all spot on. We added an ice cream bar for after hours that was a hit as well! Lastly, the service was impeccable! All of the staff was attentive without being overbearing. You never wanted for anything - everybody was professional and kind. A special thank you to Christy, our event director, who made sure that the whole day went off without a hitch. She had been working with us right from our initial inquiry and was there by our side until the end of the wedding. She was there for my wife all day - helping with hair touch ups, escorting her to the church and making sure everting was just right for her throughout the day. Marygold’s is a real treasure to Newtown and we look forward to watching them continue to grow!

Food quality / price (value) rating 10. The atmosphere is an 1890's mansion built as a private home, and from 1910's onward was an inn and restaurant eventually evolving into it's latest incarnation of classical formal dining and art deco fusion with Wainscoting. There is a wonderfully warm seating area by the entrance, perfect for pre-dinner socializing. It's a fairly casual place, with an upper crust vibe. This was our first visit here. We had the impression that it was an expensive place, but that's not the case. The quality of the food, the presentations, and the service were excellent, and reasonably priced. The wife had a house special cocktail called "Strawberry Blond" , and I had a "Hawley's Other Garden" cocktail, served with a large fruit infused cube-shaped "popsicle" I'll call it. We started by splitting the Baked Stuffed Clams that were some of the best I've ever eaten and we will come back here even if it's kust for those. I had the Marigold's Salad with Steak, covered with shaved parmesan. Wonderful! The wife had the Radicchio and Squash salad, also incredible . We split an order of "Tallow" (rendered from steak fat) fries, which were a refreshing, subtle change of what you think fries are about. They offer a limited, but well chosen number of draught beers. The owner and Chef, Clark, is typically on site, and is a seasoned, experienced restauranteur. Our server, Ryan, was super attentive and made our visit smooth and fulfilling . They're open Tuesday through Sundays for dinner, and they serve lunch on Fridays. Highly recommended!

Wonderful dining experience. The dining room itself is lovely with a beautiful long bar on the far wall. The amazingly delicious and creative cocktails were a real standout. Everything we ate was exceptional. Service was professional and warm. We will definitely be back.

Our server was prompt, courteous and knowledgeable about the menu which was eclectic for both food and beverage. We each had a different entree and each were excellent. Very enjoyable dining experience. The only thing i can be "critical" of (but would not prevent me from going back) is that it is very loud in the dining room, perhaps acoustic tiles in the ceiling would help.

Wonderful experience! Very attentive and hospitable service with a smile (under a mask) and we loved every dish. Braised short ribs and crab salad app were delicious. Only negatives: was a little loud (but what good restaurant isn't) and a little pricey so check the menu beforehand and you decide. Update: still great food and service for sure. Gazpacho was excellent. They've added acoustic tiles so the noise level is much better. Great cocktails with Buffalo Trace! Only ding is the tables are a bit small and hard to fit all the plates, waters, drinks, etc. on a 2 person. Still 5 stars.

Kathleen was an excellent bartender and took great care of us. Oysters and squash blooms were delicious starters with a meal of ny strip and a porterhouse. How could you go wrong. Perfect temperature and delicious meal. Thank you. First time was amazing, can't wait to go back.

Finally a good restaurant comes to town! Newtown that is. Located at the former 1800's Newtown Inn that has been beautifully restored; great food, excellent service, a pizza parlor at the lower level and outside dinning at the deck right above. Looking forward going back to taste the dinner options.

Honored to have the first bridal shower for our daughter at Marygold's on Main. Guests loved the venue, room set up, atmosphere and especially the food which was outstanding. Loved working with the event planner(s) who met our requests for what proved to be a memorable day for our families. Highly recommend for an event or just stop by for a delicious meal in the restaurant.

Had an amazing experience here this evening for my wife and I’s 7th anniversary dinner. Perfect service and ambiance for the occasion. Simply designed interior with a great rustic and classy feel from the bar to the dining floor and table setting. The food was amazing. We had the baked clams to start which were so fresh and cooked just right with a nice crispy finish, without over cooking the clams. Our dinners were excellent as well. My wife had the sirloin and I had the ribeye, both cooked perfectly to order and seasoned right. Great flavor and marbling on the ribeye and the sirloin was equally flavorful for the cut. We each got a dessert, wife had the chocolate mousse and I had the cheesecake, which were both very delicious. This place is a gem.

Had a lovely dinner with impeccable service. Cocktails were unique and refreshing and our apps delectable. Main course was hot, with ample service size. If I could make one suggestion, it would be to turn down the music down a notch.

This place is awesome! Recommended by my friend, our group of 5 had a fantastic brunch in their outdoor seating area. The service was top notch and the food even better. Drinks were also a nice touch as they were sophisticated and well made. I am not in Newtown frequently, but will certainly be coming back.

Exquisite brunch experience on Saturday! Menu is creative with a fine variety (we had French omelet, ham and brie melt, brioche French toast, and a high tea that will knock your socks off)! We ate at a the bar and enjoyed the great service from James the bartender. Fun afternoon!

Tori was a very pleasant and respectful waitress. Came just the perfect amount and didn’t rush me or the person I was with. Very gorgeous location and amazing, simple, fresh food. Would be very happy to come back and take more people here with me. Really a wonderful place and an even better experience.

Experienced our first Pasta night at Marygolds on Main. It did not disappoint, the food was outstanding, fresh pasta, salad and chicken parm! The service was excellent. This will be my go to Tuesday night dinner for our family!

Love everything about this place. Decor is great- modern and cool but they kept the historic touches. Food was delicious and my cocktail was just as good. Waitstaff was kind and attentive. We definitely will be back!

Had a lovely anniversary dinner with my husband. Service and food were excellent! The outdoor seating is wonderful. We had a delicious short rib spring roll. My husband had the halibut and I had a strawberry salad with shrimp. All the food was great! The interior is beautifully redone from the time we had our wedding reception here 15 years ago. The menu dishes are elegant. We enjoyed our dinner here

My husband and I had an absolutely wonderful dinner at Marygold’s. From start to finish, the experience was top notch. Our server, Ethan, was friendly, attentive, and made us feel so well taken care of. James crafted some incredible drinks—The food was excellent especially the wagyu… the atmosphere was cozy yet elevated, and the service truly made it memorable. We’ll definitely be back!

If you’re looking for a high quality dining experience look no further. I’d highly recommend the grilled veggie sandwich or the burger with chorizo and beef patties. The staff were wonderful. The owner, Kate, was very knowledgeable and helped me find a substitute for my go to lunch menu item. The decor is inspired and the food is exquisite. I live about an hour away but I still try to make it here at least once a week because it’s that great. - Blanca

My wife and I are frequent visitors and we’ve never had a bad experience. The food and cocktails are always top notch. What keeps us coming back even more than that is the staff. The bar manager, James, is friendly, welcoming, and always willing to discuss mixology. Last night, Zosia was our waitress and she was great. This place knows hospitality.

We hosted a bridal shower at Marygold's. We were very pleased with the impeccable service, from them helping unload our car to managing the timeline, and treating our guests well. Our communication with the event staff was clear and responsive throughout the whole process. They answered all of our questions and made sure our event went smoothly. The space was perfect for about 60 guests and accommodated all of our needs. We would definitely recommend hosting an event here!

If you are looking for a modern comfortable restaurant I highly recommend Marygold’s. The staff is warm and welcoming. The food is always delicious and they prioritize my allergies. The bar tenders are all very nice. I love bringing friends and family for any meal. I will be coming back soon.

Marygold’s has an amazing comforting atmosphere. The staff are attentive and super sweet. The drinks were very well mixed, had the spiked Horchata (may be a seasonal drink). We had the Dunk fried rice, which was new and interesting but overall delicious. Run, don’t walk, to Marygold’s to have a great time!

Lovely little space. Food is delicious and wait staff and bartenders are excellent. We love all the unique drink options. Had an especially great time at the Harry Potter themed afternoon tea; will definitely be back for another themed tea in the future!

We have been to Marygolds on 3 separate occasions and each time the experience was excellent in all areas The food was of top quality for ingredients and preparation. As well as beautifully presented. The specialty cocktails are inventive and incredibly flavorful and prepared by knowledgeable, professional bar staff The service was prompt and courteous and also very knowledgeable As a culinary professional for over 30 years I would definitely recommend Marygolds to anyone interested in a great dining experience

Came here for brunch with family and had the best meal. The food was delicious. We started with the beignets and they were fantastic, so light and fluffy. For entrees we got 2 hungry Mary’s, a BEC burger and the Croque Monsieur. They were all amazing. I’m pregnant so I couldn’t participate in the fun brunch cocktails but they had a nice selection of mocktails and the one I got was delicious. 10/10 recommend. Also to note, they have their own parking lot.

We had our daughter's 2nd birthday celebration here and it was perfect in every way. The events team had great communication and helped to ensure my vision was executed. The chef worked to personalize and customize a menu that fit dietary restrictions and food preferences. Everyone loved it! Highly recommend Marygold's for your event needs.

I’ve been to Marygold’s twice and both visits were excellent! The menu is so unique and the cocktail list is amazing! My family and I are very adventurous when it comes to trying new food and we loved everything we have tried here. We can’t wait to come back🩷

Our new “go to” bar. Our first visit was last Saturday and the place was very crowded. Our bartender, I believe his name was James (he made the Calico Jack), was phenomenal. He balanced handling the bar, getting food out, training a newer employee, and drink orders from a large event in the back. After things quieted down, he was able to engage in conversation and share some of his mixology suggestions. The cocktails, both on and off menu, were amazing and the apps we had were excellent. We decided to go back last night and had a similar experience with Ryan behind the bar. These guys know what they are doing and go above and beyond from a hospitality standpoint.

I forgot to mention why this is 5 stars earlier. My roasted cod was perfectly cooked and that chowder broth was amazing. My husband ordered the wagyu culotte , I didn’t need a knife. Our cocktails were perfect. The Green Dragon is actually delicious and the sesame seed oil garnish makes it complete. My husband ordered the Calico Jack toddy because it was a bit nippy out there — dee lish. We’ll be back for steakhouse Saturday around Valentine’s Day!!!

5 star restaurant food and service. We have dined here a few times and never left disappointed. The specialty drink menu is classic and delicious with many seasonal choices. The service is high class and friendly, they offer great advise on the menu selections.

Been coming to Marygolds for years on and off. Menus food and drink always changing with seasonal ingredients and we just came in yesterday for pasta Tuesday and wow what a fantastic deal. $50 for a 3 course meal that I had to take left overs home andddd half price bottles of wine, in this economy ill take that every day! Drinks are so interesting and the owner delivered our brownies asking how everything was so you know he cares. Amazing Clark ! So thankful Marygolds is close by to us

Fabulous time at Marygold’s for Steakhouse Saturday!! Incredible waygu steak for my husband, chicken so tender did not even need the bearnaise sauce..great value!! Salads, two sides, entree and dessert. The truffle Mac and cheese is swoon worthy. And as always impeccable service and Marygold’s lovely ambience. One of our favorite places in CT.

Let me just start by saying that we had a party of 14 for brunch on Saturday afternoon, including my three 8 year olds, which is not easy to handle for any establishment. The staff were exceptional...from the hostess having to add a spot for an unexpected guest, the server for dealing with all of the requests for changes to items on the menu, and the chef for making some of the most delicious brunch items we have ever had. We started of with a few orders of Marygold's Famous Beignets, which were light and a touch of sweet. I had a flavor packed French Omelette, and I tried some of my wife's delicious Broccoli and Cheddar Omelette. Thank you to everybody there for making our little party a fun, comfortable, delicious event!!

Marygold's on Main offers a dining experience that truly stands out! The atmosphere is both beautiful and relaxing - the perfect backdrop for a romantic evening or a leisurely catch-up with friends. What truly sets Marygold's apart, however, is their dedication to quality, often locally sourced ingredients. Each dish was a delightful culinary journey. This attention to detail extends beyond the kitchen, permeating every aspect of the dining experience. We'll be back!

We always enjoy Marygold’s but we just had the most amazing brunch I had to leave a review! The chef out-did himself with these specials. Absolutely amazing lemon Blueberry cheesecake pancakes, grilled apple cider donuts, short rib dumplings were SO good and more! Our server, Ariana was an absolute pleasure. So sweet, cheerful and attentive! Thank you!

From the moment we drove up to Marygold's on Main, saw the beautifully restored building with its Navy blue awning over the lovely front porch with the navy blue rocking chairs and blue and white plaid throws over their backs, I knew we were in for a very special evening! And we certainly were. That easy elegance and attention to detail and the comfort of guests carried through the entire spectacular restaurant. The building is lovely, with its clean lines, bright open spaces, lovely artwork, and beautiful bar. The staff are extremely friendly and attentive. And then there's the food! Simply spectacular. Everything that the guests at our table enjoyed looked delicious, and you must not miss the whipped Ricotta with a black pepper honey - indescribably delicious! And it's impossible to choose a favorite entree. I devoured the Chicken Schnitzel, and also sampled the Pork Belly and NY Strip Angus Steak - superb. I cannot think of a way in which our experience from start to finish could be improved upon in any way! Bravo to Marygold's on Main - we'll be back soon!!

Halloween night. The staff was all dressed up in costumes in the true spirit of Halloween. The service was wonderful and our waitress made sure our party of six in the back room near the fireplace was taken care of promptly and she checked up on us throughout the evening. Food was very good.

Very pretty and comfortable setting right on Main Street with a cozy atmosphere. Fast and efficient service, but there were only two of us and we got a croque monsieur and madame. Those two dishes with a side of avocado each, and one side of bacon with a diet Pepsi and an iced tea… came to $58 without tip, proving it’s impossible to get a modest meal at a reasonable price. Also, for a Saturday lunch you should not only have a brunch menu.

Third time here. First two were good, this last time was exceptional. New chef and new menu. Fresh and delicious. Cucumbers on the whipped ricotta were crunchy and full of unexpected flavors. Halibut (could have used a little salt) was cooked perfectly and the texture of the fennel and orange was perfect. Short rib was fork tender snd accompaniments were delicious. Came for Christmas eve dinner 2023 and unfortunately was very disappointed. The menu was lovely and most of our choices were good, but unfortunately almost every item we had, including the prime rib, was either luke warm or cold. It is very disappointing to go out for a holiday meal and have it be so subpar.

J
Julieta England

What should be good is just fair. Stale buns for sandwiches and burgers, over salted dishes, iffy desserts (misdescribed is probably more accurate). Salmon was dry, chicken on the Cesar salad looked and tasted as if it was warmed right out of the Restaurant Depot package. The "Beef Shepard s Pie" (tip to chef - Cottage Pie is made with beef, Shepherds Pie is made with lamb, and both contain vegetables) looked and tasted as if instant mashed potatoes had been piped over shredded leftover beef from last Sundays roast. Wait staff is great but some orders get mixed up or forgotten. Gave it three chances - they delivered on one.

Marigolds has always been one of our favorites since new ownership from the former Newtown Inn. Returned last evening to find the good food and excellent service that we remember However, they've rearranged their tables and now feel like we're sitting on top of the neighboring tables, seating is overcrowded, and hard to have a private conversation. We chose the prime rib special when offered, only to find the selection was priced at $60 a plate and $20+ more than the other menu selections! Overpriced and felt like we were taken advantage of by management with the pricing of this particular prime rib special. Good luck Marigolds, but we'll opt for one of the many excellent choices in the area next time we dine out.

Been there twice now, beautiful place nicely done, food was good both times I’ve been first time 6 of us (dinner) drinks were poured short and the food came out at all different times some was cold, second time 12 of us (brunch) from the first meal that came out to the last meal probably 15 minutes difference in time, my was last and my potatoes were cold. Both times not overly busy so I don’t understand the timing issue. If this place can’t get its act together, sadly it won’t last.

B
Barbara Germak

Restaurant felt cold with its white walls however loved the blue circular booth seats and interesting artwork through the many rooms. The eggplant dish I ordered looked lovely but had no taste whatsoever. I would have liked a better side rather than cheap potato chips. As for the mussels they were way to small for a restaurant of this caliber. It’s a shame because the taste of sauce was rather good. On a brighter note our bartender was excellent and provided great service to us at the bar. The Argentine wine on the menu was excellent. Bread is apparently home baked-but you will pay for it. Good place for large parties.

We have gone to Marygolds on many occasions with great food, drinks and atmosphere. Today we went back for the first time in over a year, and unfortunately, the quality has gone down. The eggs Benedict was very salty and there was an overwhelming slice of ham on it. And the burgers had stiff bacon, hard meat and didn’t have elements like the caramelized onions (changes that have not been reflected in the menu). We asked and the chef hasn’t changed but sadly the quality has.

one of the worst restaurants ive ever been to. they pose as a fancy restaurant but the food is worse than any bars in the area. There was a large hair in my flavorless ravioli, the portions were MICROSCOPIC. which would be ok if the food was any good. dishes were unsalted. 0 care 0 attention. head chef needs to be fired immediately

recently went here for dinner, terrible service, uninspired menu, ghastly food, but don't let this review deter you from experiencing the establishment, go see for yourself...then you can thank me later. Hi Kate after reading your response to my review, I just wanted to let you know that BL are my initials, I'm not hiding behind a fake name and I'm not as angry as you say either. I just don't feel the need to apologize for voicing my opinion when a restaurant is unable to deliver value on the dollar, a premium dollar at that. I have culinary skills and have a keen eye for skillful preparations and inspired compositions. Unfortunately your restaurant didn't meet my expectations. No worries, I'll never return or recommend your establishment. Best of luck to you.

As a long-time supporter and father of a server at Marigold's, I've been excited about the investment they made into the old Inn at Newtown. I especially loved Jazz night, enjoying great cocktails by the fireplace in a welcoming environment. Over the years, I've spent thousands of dollars and advocated for the restaurant, hoping for its success. Despite it being the most expensive option in Newtown, I didn't mind overpaying as long as I had an enjoyable dining experience. However, over the years and through several management changes, I've witnessed a slow decline. Now, the restaurant feels empty and devoid of warmth. For the past year, I've primarily gone to support my daughter. The overbearing upper management seems obsessed with details, neglecting the most important aspect: people. Instead of reclaiming an upscale hometown vibe, the owner has doubled down in the wrong direction by hiring a presumptuous, awkward, lazy, and sexist manager. This manager, who brags about his all-male staff at his previous New York City job, rules the restaurant with fear and bullies young women. I invite you to dine in the cold, stuffy environment and see for yourself if the manager, Paul, is indeed as pompous and demeaning as I've described, and if the employees seem unhappy. If your experience aligns with mine, please share your feedback with the chef/owner and consider not returning.

I wish I could leave a more positive review, but the bartender’s behavior was completely unacceptable and left a lasting negative impression. As someone who’s been in the hospitality industry for over 20 years, I understand how crucial professionalism and customer service are, and this experience fell far short. From the moment we approached the host stand, it was clear the bartender wasn’t happy to see anyone entering the establishment. His demeanor was irritated, and he barely placed the menus on our table before walking off. When we attempted to order toasted almonds, he informed us they didn’t have amaretto but didn’t offer any alternatives. As a former bartender myself, I asked if he had orgeat, knowing it could be used in place of amaretto. He said yes, but instead of being helpful, he then mumbled at me for holding my vape while running off mid-conversation. I’ve been a regular customer, but after this experience, I’m not sure I’ll return. The one bright spot was the waitress, who did a fantastic job despite being clearly overwhelmed and without much support from her colleagues. It's disappointing to see this kind of behavior in an industry where hospitality should always come first.
