George and Walts is a great neighborhood bar. Always friendly and welcoming. Always a pleasant experience. The bar is stocked pretty well, and there's a good selection on tap.
Great for watching games with friends! Surprisingly good kitchen, reasonable prices, fun crowd, and lots of TVs! Bar is cash only but they have an ATM system. Kitchen accepts credit cards.
This is the best place in the world. The bartenders are nice and funny, the bar is clean, the customera are diverse and friendly, drinks are a fair price, and you get a free beer back with every shot! The guy below is incorrect in his statement. First, there is indeed an ATM that the bar charges $1.50 service fee to use. You can take out $10 to $60. They give you the money out of the register WITH A RECEIPT. Typically they deduct the cost of your drinks from your desired withdrawal amount. YOU GET ALL THE CHANGE. Second, the bartender is NOT a waitress. He or she are working hard to take orders without making customers wait for long periods of time (that is the concept at this place), making those orders, changing TV stations, washing dishes and putting them away, being friendly to customers, cleaning up after customers, running the ATM cards through the machine, and many other things...all while putting a smile on their face. Cheers.
Calling this place a "dive" only elevates its true potential to be a great neighborhood sports bar. It recently opened a kitchen to soak up all that alcohol (I haven't tried the food yet) and graciously gives you a beer back if you get a shot. This is where you find the locals.
Best neighborhood sports bar in East Bay. It reminds me of my favorite spots back home (in the Midwest). Tons of regulars, friendly staff, and a great place to watch a game (often with sound).
Great neighborhood bar feel with great food, drinks, and two pool tables. Friendly local crowd. The oxtail grilled cheese was 🔥🔥🔥🔥
I have patronized this bar for 30 year's. Great place to play pool with the best of the best. Moreover, George and Walt's is truly like the old syndication, cheers and everyone knows you're name
Old school hand out bar. Pool tables to pass your time. Nice employees.
This bar is so Oakland. Great vibe, fun patrons. ESPECIALLY during football season, they play ALL the games and fans get rowdy. It's a blast.
Great place, good atmosphere, not busy usually. Showing soccer games with audio and comfortable seats. Also has 2 table pool!
Good place to shoot pool or hang out after work.
Only bar I frequent now. Food smacks, drinks are made right, service is great and there is always a good mix of regulars and people just looking for a drink. Johnny, Fred, HB, Katy and the rest of staff deserve all the love.
The best bar in Oakland if you wnat a taste of the genuine masshup culture. Everyone is welcome here. Put your name up for pool early, and enjoy some pickup dinner from the kitchen window - anything from chicken tenders to oxtail stew. And don't forget to add your best toe-tapping tunes to the always-jumping jukebox. I love this place.
George and Walt’s provides a special experience to a night on the town. With great drinks poured by outstanding friendly bar staff , who needs to go anywhere else? Great for playing pool as well! It comes highly recommended!!!
Awesome sports bar. Great place to spend a Football Sunday here, especially if you're a Packers' fan. Awesome deals throughout the week including 16$ buckets on Sundays. Would definitely recommend.
Had a great time at George & Walt’s last week. This might be my new spot, especially on game day! Very diverse & friendly crowd. Food was yummy! Drinks were great (except they ran out of my peach crown 😂). Bartenders were hella cool.
UPDATE: it's probably my fault, because I'm just slow to grasp things that sometimes, but The kitchen and menu in this place are the sleeper hit of the century. Had one of the best chicken sandwiches I ever ate, and discovered that the locals have been keeping this place a secret ( I understand fully), The recommend that if you go here, try anything coming out of their kitchen. It is real Americana bar food, but high end. Now, onto my regular review...... Working class Watering Hole owned and operated by local people who like local people who appreciate local people that I mention local people? Cheap drinks, good company, pool tables, a jukebox and people who won't call the cops if you have an occasional smoke outside. What more could you ask for? Don't Front, you know you need a place like this. When it's time to get down and dirty and have some hard drinking fun, or sit down next to some true Burly men and women and learn what the working-class Oakland experience is all about, stop by. You won't be disappointed
A great place for, pool, watch sports, music, food, drinks (alcohol and non), singing, dancing and most important for New & Seasoned friends to meet and let your hair down.
Do yourself a favor. Give up your FOMO and get LOCA(l). This bar is a reliable solution for a weekend you are playing by ear, or an after-work hangout. Cool lounge area, great bar, and pool tables. Neighborhood bars are as good as the people and the people here are legit: friendly and genuine. You can actually mix and mingle at this bar, unlike trendy destination bars where people talk to their clique. Service is friendly and on-point - a rarity these days. It’s hard enough to find a bar with food at all. The bar food - hand food (burgers, chicken sandwiches, fries) - are restaurant quality. Thanks HP and BO for your kitchen artistry. Thanks Dan, Mary and Norma for your mixology talents. I’m bringing friends here. George and Walt’s is what bars are supposed to be.
Always a great time. Great bartenders, cold beer, good food. Lots of TVs and a friendly crowd.
This is like the classiest dive bar I've ever been to. Everybody was super cool very relaxed seen. Check it out
Classic Rockridge dive and sports bar with all the holiday cheer you need. Not trendy. Not hip. Just a great bar full of locals.

Though I’ve lived in Rockridge for 8 years, tonight was my first visit to George and Walt’s to watch a game. Even though my team lost, I had an incredible time. We came in after kick-off started and the owner? bent over backwards to find me and my 2 sisters seats to watch though it was already packed, she found 3 chairs out of nowhere and made us feel like family. The bartender was so friendly and attentive, the food was an unexpected delight and everyone there including the regulars made us feel so very welcome. I imagine this is as close as you can get to a having a local British pub, everyone was so kind. Cannot recommend highly enough.
This is a divey, little bit rowdy, great people watching bar. If you like playing pool you will play some of the best Oakland has to offer here.
First time at this bar and really enjoyed my night with friends and locals. Cash only but they have an ATM. I drink fernet and the bartender offered me a chilled option which I never thought about. Now I'm hooked! There's plenty of friendly good pool players if you're into that. You can smoke outside. They also have a kitchen full of yummy foods. And the head chef is very friendly!
Great bar to watch football games. They have all of the games going simultaneously, and fans from all over show up. Love that you order food from the kitchen and drinks from the bar (no service), which is much faster. Also, cash only speeds up transactions, so you rarely have to wait on things. Definitely a neighborhood institution. Favorite things: -Dry or sauced wings in multiple flavors -eclectic drink specials like a tequila and 8 oz beer combo -friendly yet professional staff

Cool sports bar. A Philadelphia Eagles hub. I bought the cheese quesadilla and it was charred and all you could taste was burned tortilla. It was so bland, sans the char, it desperately needed salsa or some other condiment other than the sour cream that came with the appetizer.
Great bar and grill for old school and school Oaklanders/Berkeley peeps. Very friendly bartenders and excellent cook. FYI, they only have one cook so it may take a while to get food and they only accept cash.
Had a burger. They just started serving food recently. It was very good as were the fries. I've been coming to G & W for years and it's always been friendly and filled with cool East bay folks.
The food was great after a long night of bar hopping. Cool, mixed crowd. Pool table, intimate chair settings & friendly bar tenders!
Nice place for a drink. They have two pool tables which can make it a little crowded. But all in all not a bad place to grab some drinks.
We stopped in for a drink on Friday night. The kitchen staff recommended the daily special: Ox tail grilled cheese sandwich and corn beef egg rolls. The food was fantastic and the staff was very friendly. I knocked off one star since it took a while to get our beer, but the bartender made up for the wait with a lot of enthusiasm. There was only one bartender at the time, and she really did do a great job.
This was a fun bar to stop by to watch the Penn State football game and play pool. We ordered a pitcher of Death & Taxes black beer to share which was delicious. It wasn’t busy during the time we went but would be a good place to just hang out and grab few beers with friends.
Good place to play pool, they have 2 tables. Just make sure to monitor your name on the queue because people will likely try to skip you or even erase your name. If you play Mo, watch for the double hit foul. They do have good equipment for a bar though. Drinks are good although not too generous on the pours... The food is almost always good.
A cool little smokey dive off College Ave. Pool tables. Cash only? Some snacks. Older vibe was nice. No young loud kids. Sports on the TV’s. Good place for a drink at the end of the day or a stop in on your food walk down College Ave.

Nice windows up front but nice and cozy in the back. Very comfortable stools, tons of different sports on the different TVs, two nice pool tables I think about $1.50. The bartender is very friendly and chatty and it seems like mostly regulars. Nice variety of seating options : bar, 3x six seat high tables, a few tables outside off the side walk and a few tables for two at the front windows Also I think the term “ dive bar” is over used and does not apply to this place. This is a nice friendly neighborhood bar
Super friendly old school casual neighborhood dive-ish sports bar with billiards, a separate food counter (burgers and such), TVs with ‘the game’ on, fans of multiple teams welcome. People are friendly. Drinks are basic but fine (don’t go ordering crazy stuff). Decor is linoleum, high tops, share a table or space with someone you don’t know yet. I like it a lot. Not a date place if you’re trying to impress.

honestly it really depends on the bartenders onboard when you visit. some of them are really dry and not very friendly. the owner on the other hand is really nice and hospitable to all of her customers met her one time on a sunday for a open bloodymary bar they provide. G&W is kind of like a cheers bar were every one knows each other so they may give you that what do u want look. drinks are good and there always offering a special. pool tables and food is also available.
Cash only dive bar, great prices. Food was meh. Cajun chicken wings were dry, the chicken tenders were a bit better. Someone walked by with the sandwich and that looked delicious. My salad was also good.
As a tourist, I wouldn’t have walked in with the crowd outside the door. I had a recommendation that i would find like minded football fans to hang with and I did just that. Others have described this as a “dive bar” and it lives up to that description: dark, messy, and loud. There is a small inexpensive selection of mass produced beer, a kitchen making passable bar type food and televisions tuned to football on Sunday. It didn’t feel like “Cheers” but the service was ok and the crowd was friendly enough.
This place feels a bit like Cheers but depending on the day or night and what season it is can get a bit stuffy and occasionally agro. Of course we all love the entertainment and living vicariously through sports. What I’ve noticed at George & Walt’s (RIP) Is that whenever (every time) the customers get passionate, consider not caring. The other thing I noticed, is the people that play billiards(clearly daily players) take it real serious. I would not advise putting your name on the board unless you’re prepared to win or lose. Oh Yeah, I’m reviewing the food, a seperate but connected food truck w/out wheels that actually serves up some decent grub. I suggest checking the specials if available… Decent Burger, average + wings, awesome chicken strips if one requests less salt. Salads, pretty pretty good.

Bartender was rude right from the start and closed 30 mins early
The first time I went about 3 years ago to watch sports, I was treated very well by bartenders and the crowd was okay. The second time a week or so later while sitting at the bar with a friend, a white big-headed bully dude stood behind me and felt comfortable enough in this place to loudly try to pick a fight with me, a female of color. I left and haven't been back.
This place has a distinct sketchy vibe to it. Not a "cool" dive bar, more like a "I hope no one drugs my drink or tries to fight me" type dive bar. Avoid it unless you're a local who just wants to get trashed.
I walked in to G&W's this evening to have food, drinks and play pool with a friend. I hadn't been for a long time. I also had my licensed service dog of 6 years who was wearing his vest with me. As we entered the bartender yelled very loudly at me that they have a kitchen and my dog is not allowed. The bar fell silent. I stated that we were not going into the kitchen and that what he, the bartender, is legally able to ask me is, "Is that a service dog and..." He (the bartender, interrupted and asked what service does he provide. Clearly, he knew what he was allowed to ask according to the ADA regulations, otherwise he would not have known the second question to ask. Being yelled at and humiliated in front of all the patrons in the bar completely ruined my evening. I only stayed and spoke back to the bartender instead of leaving and calling my attorney because my friend really wanted to play pool. So I purchased the cheapest drinks I could (soft drinks) so my friend could at pool. I was hungry but refused to spend more money at an establishment that treated a disabled person with a service dog in such a demeaning manner. I was embarrassed and upset. Nothing like going somewhere to have an enjoyable evening and getting yelled at and humiliated in front of a bunch of people I dont know at 5:45 in the evening. What a great way to start my weekend off right, thanks Johnnie. I appreciate your getting my drinks and slamming my change on the counter and treating me the every patron dreams of being treated.

I spend good money on jukebox. Bartenders don't like my choices & turn my songs way down. Anyone's paid selection of music should be played just as loud as any other. Jukebox is expensive & remove songs not liked or let all PAID FOR SELECTIONS PLAY AS LOUD AS ANY OTHER.
