The old location was great, but the new location is wonderful. The food is so delicious. I’m not a vegan but this is so incredibly delicious I feel like I can convert. Hip Vegan is a kind of legend in Ojai. The staff are sweet and friendly. They can get a little overwhelmed when it gets super-busy, but they do a really good job and really try. For those of you who don’t care about the taste of the food and only want it for the health benefits and for those of you (like me) who care deeply about eating fresh delicious food and really deeply enjoying the experience... prepare to have your mind blown cause the food is that good. This is a modest place - it’s not a place that caters to those in need of waiters and butlers. It’s a sweet little place run by sweet people who make awesomely delicious food. Be nice and it will be good for your karma-points. And don’t forget to bus your plates when you’re done.
Nice place for a quick light bite. An Ojai go to for casual quick food.
This was by far the best restaurant in ojai from both a service and food quality perspective. I was a bit disappointed with the rest of the food scene, but ate at Hip Vegan twice and was extremely happy about that decision. I dined in once and got takeout once and both times were exceptional. Highly recommend.
Ten out of ten. Non vegans will still find this salad and comfort food spot delicious. The old fashioned burger is excellent, so is the souk salad. I eat here so often I call it my “out kitchen”.
Everything I've ever ordered from here feels super high quality and delicious, not to mention nutritious! Yesterday I got the Warung Burger which was even tastier than I was expecting--peanut sauce and fried tempeh are a great combo. The eating environment outside is also so pleasant, under lovely trees on a beautiful patio!
We were traveling to Ojai only for 1 day. I’m vegan and looking for a great spot. I’ve read some reviews and was pleasantly surprised with a great variety of dishes and drinks. I ordered Falafel bowl. The portion was big for me, so I took to go a third part of it. The quality of good is amazing! Unique recipes and delicious!
Hip Vegan ♥️♥️♥️ I’ve been here many times, also in their old location. I love their salads. They have great desserts, lots of nom-alcoholic options and lots of beer & wine too. We get dinner here once a week. The old fashioned burger is amazing too. Not sure how they do it.
Great food, atmosphere and service. Their variety of sandwiches, bowls etc. is very impressive!
Best vegan restaurant in California. When I take people here who are not vegan / vegetarian, they are always impressed with how great the food is, even if they initially had doubts about a vegan menu. Phenomal mix of exotic flavors and traditional comfort. I eat here every time I eat in Ojai. Don't sleep on this absolute gem of a restaurant experience.
First off , social distancing and masks are required. That said, I had the special-A fried Tofu burger, their fries and a cranberry tea. Delicious! Wife had a Veggie burger and a chai tea. Burger was good but not so much for the tea. She didn't enjoy the coconut creamer. Burgers are huge and messy. I'm cheap, so to me the meal was expensive-almost $40. Very relaxing environment.
You order at the counter and grab a seat outside under a tree. I ordered the Asham lunch, dal over rice. It was very good. I also go a cacao smoothie which was so delicious that I came back later and ordered another one for dinner. My son loved the mango smoothie and Tempeh burger. I've been here before and will return. I love the outdoor space and the vibe. The people working here are kind and helpful. Highly recommend.
I love hip vegan, its even better that the old one and way more accessible. I do miss the old owners from the old place tho, I feel that they had a special kind of energy that you can't ever forget. With that being said the food at the current hip vegan is amazingly good, my go too was the old fashion burger... that is until I tried the Baggett which is now my current favorite go to meal. Overall all I highly recommend this place for anyone who wants to eat delicious vegan food thats filling.
Sooo good! Go, you'll be happy you did. I've had tasteless vegan before. This wildly exceed my expectations. I understand it's a local staple. I want to go again next time I'm in Ojai!
Starting off, I'm not a vegan, but wanted to try the food here.... It was amazing! We were only in Ojai two days and went back the second day. The staff was friendly, seemed covid aware (I'm in medicine, my wife is pregnant so we're pretty concious about it) and the food was top notch. The food is filling, satisfying, and feels nutritious for the body. I swear I could feel my body absorbing all that plant based goodness. We had our 9 month puppy outside who started barking at our waitress (surprised both of us) who in turn took the time to say hello and alleviate any nerves our pup may have had. Really an excellent place and look forward to visiting again next time in ojai! Even if you're not vegan, I would venture to try it out!
Words cannot describe how much I love this place. Went twice in one day because it was so good and the environment was peaceful. I had the warung burger, brussel sprouts, fries, spring rolls, pb & banana cookie, and a beer over the course of the day. Sat outside in the lovely patio and the food arrived quickly. I look forward to visiting again in the near future!
The whole family found something to enjoy. My little brother said "I love this" about the baguette. Green ginger smoothee was awesome. I ordered the wagamama bowl and my mom got the bowl with falafel which was so fun to share. We really enjoyed our food and the quick and helpful service.
Traveling from Texas and at an Airbnb in Ventura California. Daughter in law and grandkids are vegan. Son, husband and I are not but eat vegan food. I had the Casa burrito and it was delicious and huge. We also had chips and salsa, fries with cheese sauce, Caesar salad.
Lots of really good options 👌 Good tasting Organic vegan food!
So so good! Love the izakaya bowl, jackfruit burrito, dal and more! The fries are the best ever too! So much flavor and mostly healthy :)
Outstanding food and service. Everyone who works here is kind and loving to our dog which we appreciate. The gun powder fries are strong with flavor and it is unique and unforgettable. Our favorite is to have the warung burger and fries. The cheeseburger is also really well done, reminds of a healthy version of Mr. Charlie’s. If they ever have the mushroom burger special, try that as well!
Yum, yum and more yum!! What a great surprise ( and recommendation from a local shop owner) the Hip Vegan was! Neither of us are vegan, but an excellent choice for lunch…and why shouldn’t we all be a little more vegan? The lime in the coconut dish and falafel wrap were both delicious!
The food was delicious, the place was clean, there is indoor and outdoor seating, the servers were very friendly and helpful, but the service was a little slow.
Casual vegan eatery in Ojai, Ca. Went with family each of us loved our food. Jackfruit burrito, wagamama bowl and I had the Izakaya salad which was more of a bowl and frankly one of the best over ever had. I’d eat that every day!!! You place order sit inside or out , they bring your food. Young woman taking orders was excellent answered many questions about ingredients for one of our party who has a lot of food sensitivities. Off the more upscale gentrified Main Street a block or so, well worth the visit!
Vegan burger was good and service mediocre. Whomever worked the cash register was snappy and unwelcoming. A friendly and warm reception goes a long way. Miss the days when it was simply a mom and pop joint. Crew cooked their tail off and at same time, atmosphere was like a family reunion.
Excellent!! Our first time here, the cold tap beer on a hot day, the flavorful and delicious vegan burger and sandwich were fantastic! The fries were the best ever! We liked the pleasant outdoor seating area as well. Definitely coming back.
I am not a vegan, but my wife ordered us some of the tortas and they were insanely delicious (and filling)! Also, the fries were absolutely top notch. If I could eat like this all the time, vegetarianism/veganism would be way more appealing to me!
Perfect across the board. We had the Bah Mi salad, Lime Coconut Salad (today’s special) and Gunpowder fries. Delicious! Great service and atmosphere as well. Very zen inside and out for a relaxing lunch
One of my top favorite restaurants in the county, whether you’re vegan or not. The food is consistently good. The atmosphere is very nice & relaxing, lots of outdoor seating under a large tree. The staff is always really nice. I need to branch out though, because we eat here almost every time we’re in Ojai
Not on the main drag, a couple blocks in. So glad another new resident happened to say how great their food is! Will definitely go back when in the area!
First off, just Wow! This place really lives up to all of the glowing reviews. They were serving crispy maple Brussels sprouts that remind one of the sweet veggies of a bucolic youth. The spicy noodles transported my partner and I to the orient where we savored a panoply of exotic flavors. Please try this restaurant if you are in Ojai.
### Hip Vegan in Ojai At Hip Vegan in Ojai, I took a bite, The menu's a dream, and the food's just right. I had French fries, crispy and neat, With a spring roll wrap, a perfect treat. The tofu sandwich, spicy and bold, On ciabatta bread, a story told. The staff is friendly, the vibe's a win, A perfect spot for meeting kin. With flavors fresh and a friendly feel, Hip Vegan’s the spot for a delicious meal. Meeting clients here is always a joy, In this cozy spot in lovely Ojai.
I’d go here more if my wallet had space for it! Probably one of my favorite vegan spots in Ventura County & Santa Barbara County combined. From smoothies, bowls and sandwiches to coffee. It’s kind of hard to go wrong. I’ve been here a lot and only had a few hiccups with orders. What would be expected for going there so much over the years. Overall a very consistent experience. Order at the register, take a seat and have your food come to the table. Worth the trip to Ojai.
I'm not vegan, but I can still enjoy vegan food! Very cute patio, generous portions, and tasty to boot! We had the tiger Bowl and the wagamama Bowl and they were both delicious (though I'm not a fan of sweet potato...). There was a tiny line around 1pm on a Sunday but it moved quickly and we got our food at reasonable time.
THIS PLACE IS SO DELISH! the spicy banh mi & fries were amazing
Wakamama is my jam-a! Came here on a busy lunch weekend and it was well worth the wait! The staff were so friendly and welcoming. We ordered the Wakamama bowl. It’s light but filling. Perfect for when you have an afternoon packed of stuff and you can’t afford to have a food coma. It’s nutritious, colorful, and tasty. My mouth is watering whilst writing this review! I never thought to put wakame and koya-dofu on a salad but it worked so well. Also the brown rice was fluffy and brought balance to the flavors with every bite.
Super tasty vegan food. The rice ballers were amazing and crispy. We will come again!
Ordered the Spicy noodles and Lime and m the Coconut from the specialty board. Fantastic flavors. Large portions. Great service! Beer on tap and lots of other drink options.
Outstanding food. Simply excellent. Try the Souk salad or Wagamama bowl. Great beers on tap as well. Apparently all the vegetables used in the foods are grown in their local garden and it really shows. The tomatoes taste like tomatoes. The trick though in the end I think is the dressing s
This place is super yummy. The Warung burger is delicious. The salads are fresh. You have to try the strawberry basil fizzy, it's so good.
Super tasty, nice and healthy with a great outdoor patio!
The absolute best vegan burger I've had in forever, maybe ever!! After a local hike, my guy friend and I were starving and ready for lunch. Hip Vegan had been recommended in a recent issue of AAA's Westways with a write up on Ojai so I figured we'd give it a shot. I got the Old Fashioned Burger, we split some Gunpowder Fries, and (because I was starving) I also got a Date and Cacao Smoothy. It was a perfect lunch ~ freaking delicious, peaceful on a sun dappled patio, quick and friendly service. A perfect meal for our Ojai day 💖
For all you non vegans, myself included, this place is incredible. I know when I think of a vegan restaurant I usually think dry and bland. This place is the absolute opposite. So flavorful and cooked perfectly. I got the bahn mi and my sister their crispy tofu sandwich. Everything was incredible plus the staff were so friendly and helpful
Amazing food -nutritious and oh-so-yummy; courteous and fast service, lovely, welcoming atmosphere. I ordered the incredible Warung burger (green-wrapped). The cardamom rose tea cookies are incredible, as is the lemon ginger seltzer. Also love the fact that all takeout is in recyclable containers, and straws are paper. This business walks their talk: environmental stewardship. Thank you Hip Vegan!
Well, it’s right across the street from my studio and it’s just so amazing to have this great food so close by!
Got the wagamama bowl…it is probably/arguably the best bowl I have ever had - vegan OR not. No, it’s not cheap at its $18 price tag, but with the flavor it has WHO CARES. This bowl is absolutely AMAZING. Should I be rating an entire restaurant based off 1 dish? Maybe not. But between the flavors of the meal and the peripheral considerations (the speedy service, the serene outdoor patio, the well kept tables, etc.), I feel no reservations doing so. Whether you’re vegan or not, patronize hip vegan!
Riding in on the Ventura river trail, we were famished. Rolled up to Hip Vegan and WOW. The food and service was so amazing— it was like that burger or pizza after a 5 day backpacking trip. I challenge any carnivore to try the old fashioned burger and not be completely satisfied. It is that good. Combined with the on site fries with on site dip sauce, again WOW. You owe it to yourselves to try Hip Vegan. You will be stoked. Right off of 33
I was pleasantly surprised. My wife and I couldn't believe how good their specials were. Ashram lunch was as close to home food (I'm from India) as I've had outside of Indian restaurants. I had the canteen bowl which had the dal vada which was also ridiculously close to home. It's a bit pricey but I think it's worth it.
This place has an amazing selection of vegan bites. They have a varied standing menu as well as weekly specials. Cuisine is varied; they have Mexican, Asian, and American-inspired dishes. Make sure to try the grilled tempeh.
The Hip Vegan definitely fits in with the vibe of Ojai, California. My wife and I stumbled upon it after a walk in Ojai and we had a fantastic experience. Typically we are carnivores and did not know what to expect with an organic and vegan restaurant. The Hip Vegan has a very interesting menu and at first we did not know what to order. We wanted to try something new and we were completely surprised by how much we liked the food. We tried the Souk salad which had a fresh and great taste. At the register we saw their specials and decided to give two dishes a try. We ordered the Spicy noodles and Lime in the coconut and they both tasted great. The food was very filling and nutritious and a great value for your money. They offer a vast selection of different specialty drinks and also beer. The staff was friendly and the restaurant had a calm and mellow vibe. Honestly was surprised by how much we liked it! If you are looking for a healthy and nourishing meal, while enjoying the town of Ojai give Hip Vegan a try!
Playing really good music ranging from Vietnamese to Reggae, this place knocks our socks off. We had the banh mi, the spicy torta, the Vietnamese Iced Coffee, and it was ALL vegan!!! They spared no expense for taste, and the staff was superb. We can't wait to go back.
We found this eatery by accident. I am glad we did! Everything is organic And VEGAN. I am not vegetarian but I like only healthy food!!! Portion was right (Wagamama Bowl). You can even have smoothies, coffee (Vietnamese)…. You can sit either inside or outside. It has a very nice atmosphere.
The food here is super delicious and all vegan or vegetarian as well. Amazing flavors that they can pull off with a more limited ingredients. Was looking for a place to eat and also to setup my laptop and work a little, and this was the perfect find with good wifi. Great service and nice atmosphere.
Highly recommend this spot for dinner! So so good I came back two nights in a row! Had Wagamama bowl, and a special, Lime & Coconut green Curry salad (or similar name) Also tried c.c. cookie and molasses ginger cookie. They were not as good as the dinner items. That said, I took home some coffee cake that was pretty good for breakfast the next day with a steaming cup of joe. I wished I was in Ojai longer so I could try everything on the menu! Nice selection of beer and wine too. Very nice outside patio that seemed quite busy at lunch. Less busy for dinner Sun, Mon evenings.
Best vegan food I've had in a long while. Like most vegan restaurants they kind of meander all over the culinary map. But these folks get it right! From their spicy fries to their health conscious Ashram Bowl, it's a symphony for the senses. A must for ANY vegan in So-Cal.
Ok I don't know how to put this... The food is so damn good I came back the next day to make sure I wasn't dreaming. They somehow managed to be a vegan restaurant and serve up some of the most flavorful, delightfully rich, colorful dishes with great portion sizes for a full and happy stomach. The wagamama made my heart SING with such delectable ingredients!!! The seaweed! The pickled cucumber! The roasted sweet potato! The marinated tofu! All so good. Also, the black bean burger with the tempeh patty was FLAVORful! The honey-coated bun threw us off, but the ingredients inside really brought it together to be such a delicious meat-free meal. The tiger bowl with the fried onion bits, and the jackfruit burrito both are super delicious and highly recommended. Aside from the wagamama, the gunpowder Fries were my favorite. That miso aioli-tasting dipping sauce and sriracha-honey ketchup (??) was a perfect pairing to the crispy, generously sized, well seasoned and spiced fries. Only disappointment was the $9 Choco date smoothie- too expensive and not enough cocoa taste or really any nuanced flavors to make it worth the price or calories. Unfortunately, service could be better as the register girl and floor guy seemed irritated and unwelcoming. The vibe is nice, though and lots of options for group, couple, and single diners. Bathrooms are clean and spacious! Can't wait to return.
Delicious, fresh food, everyone loved their dish! The izakaya salad was spectacular! Nice, large and shaded outdoor patio. We'll be back :)
We had lunch and were so impressed we went back for dinner. Excellent food, drinks, beer selection, and dog friendly. Be sure to get the soup, a cookie, the Vietnamese cashew condensed milk and fries. Also, be sure to check out the specials menu at the counter. Staff was so friendly and remembered us by name.
We visited Ojai for a weekend getaway and dined at Hip Vegan about 7 times. 😋 Yes, it was that good!! Plus, it's very celiac friendly. Once you order, the food was delivered quickly. The patio was a wonderful, quiet but yet lively space. They are also dog friendly! Our favorite dishes were the tiger bowl, spring rolls, izakaya salad, smoothies, side fries, and side pickles. Honestly, the tiger bowl was #1 for us. A must when eating here. The gluten free baked goods weren't that great, but everything else was delicious.
Great atmosphere and great food. Ordered the tiger bowl and it tasted really good. Looking at other items that came out from the kitchen, I don’t think you could make a bad decision here. Highly recommend if you’re in Ojai and want some great vegan food.
We stumbled upon this fantastic healthy restaurant today! Clean and airy with air conditioning inside! This is not a full service restaurant, but rather a restaurant where you select your food and drink at the counter, pay and find a table. There are several tables inside, but we chose to sit outside in the patio. My husband is not a fan of vegetables or healthy stuff, but enjoyed his Baguette and Gunpowder fries which comes with their homemade curry ketchup and a tasty mustard! He said his baguette was flavorful and spicy good! The fries were spicy and the dipping sauces devine, although the fries are stand alone tasty. He said he would come back to Hip Vegan again! I ordered the Wagamama Bowl which was heavenly to my tummy! I love all the Asian flavors in this bowl. The portion size of this bowl is generous and I could of had it all, but decided to pace myself and take some home for dinner later tonight. I definitely recommend the wagamama bowl! I also ordered one of the seasonal fruit sodas. I chose the watermelon lime juice mixed with soda. My husband had a beer on tap. After finishing our meal, we bussed our plates and trash. Inside there is a station to get your own metal utensils and glassware for water, along with paper napkins. Hip Vegan is truly a pleasant restaurant for yummy food and drink!

Some of the best vegan ramen I have ever had! The gunpowder fries are to die for with the curry ketchup and the fry sauce. Everything was so delicious here.

Nutritious yummy food and 10 star staff experience. Darrell, the person who served us was so sweet and had great menu suggestions and made sure we were satisfied. He made the experience here even better!

Another great place with quality vegan food worth the 1 hour drive.
All vegan in a perfect setting with comfy seating outside and a very relaxing vibe. Nice! Didn’t eat meals this time but just hung out and chatted with community folk and had coffees and fries. Will be back! Friendly staff and out pups were welcome. Drove in from LA to have a little getaway in Ojai. We were delighted to see a vegan cafe. 🤩🌱❤️
The Dal soup is the highlight. The Casa Burrito was good. Just needs more veg. The green tea was good. The Thai noodle dish was good. Again, just needs more pop. Outside seating is wonderful.
Oh my goodness, we were so hungry I forgot to take photos of the food! Their Reuben was amazing! Hubby had the Waggamamma bowl and loved it. Gunpowder fries are indeed spicy but good! The regular fries are a hit as well. Outside seating was delightful.
Amazing food! Very tasty and healthy as well. Every bite felt like a treat. Definitely going back to Hip whenever in Ventura or Ojai!

This place has one of the best vegan burgers in Ventura county. The gunpowder fries are flavorful and usually served crispy with delicious dipping sauces on the side. I knock off one star because sometimes service could be more patient and kind.
A solid vegan spot 🌱🌮 After a disappointing tofu dish last time, I was skeptical. I checked the menu beforehand but wasn’t thrilled—two dishes were too spicy, and the third had tempeh (not my thing). Still, I gave it another shot, and I’m glad I did. The best options were on the specials menu. My group ordered from the main menu—a burrito (solid) and a Wagamama Bowl (also good)—while I went for the ‘Lime of Coconut’ special, which was very good. Prices are reasonable, the ambience is pleasant, and overall, it was a much better experience than last time. Would return—but probably sticking to the specials!
We came here specifically for the Wagamama macro bowl. Absolutely delicious although they were a bit skimpy with the tofu this time. I do not believe they used authentic espresso beans for the Vietnamese coffee because it was quite mild and not robust as it should be. However, outdoor seating was clean/comfy and waitress who took our order and brought food out was friendly. We had absolutely no wait time at 11:30am but it was packed about an hour later.

Very tasty vegan food of multicultural origin. Everything seemed very fresh and well prepared. My Japanese inspired “Wagamama” bowl was delicious and featured a variety of vegetables, tofu, and brown rice with subtle dressing. The spicy noodle bowl was a special and was really good if a little too rich. The side of gunpowder fries came with two dipping sauces and were very good. The coffee cake was fresh and delicious. I would definitely like to come again and try some of their other offerings. Ok now I’ve been back a couple of times. The last two times all the food has been way too salty! I say this as someone that likes salty foods. I had the dragon bowl earlier this week and then the spring rolls tonight and both were over the top salty! My partner and I left thinking we should have sent the food back.
It's a Vegan place. Food was good, the "old fashioned" burger tastes kind of like a mix between an impossible burger and a turkey burger, and it is messy to eat with all the toppings, but it's good. Cookies are moist but very crumbly. Tasted better than some real cookies. 3 stars only because no service. Not "bad" service - but rather the restaurant is designed to have no service. You get your own silverware, pour your own water in cups, grab your napkins, clear your table -all kind of like a fast food place- but it's not a fast food joint. it's otherwise a pleasant sit down place.
Had the Warung burger, gunpowder fries, and 1 beer for lunch. Added a $2 tip and my meal was $39. A bit more than I was hoping to spend for a simple meal but it was good I guess. Place was clean and staff was nice.

I give this place 2 stars and not 1, because my daughter loves the food! So before I write my review, I went to to see if anyone else shared my experience, and I guess no one has! I've been to this place twice, we heard how great the fries were, and my daughter got some, they were OK, a little under cooked for my opinion! When there she saw the menu, and wanted the Black Bean Bowl, so we order to go, we go to pick it up, and the woman helping us gave us the food, she seemed nice enough, the place was nice airy, and open! When she took my card I was happy to give a tip, instead of a thank you, hope to see you again, her smiled turned to a more visible distaste, and turned around and said nothing, I requested a receipt, and got nothing! We left and right away I wanted to get at least the tip back! I know that may sound crazy, but for me its all about customer service! Yesterday my daughter wanted the same bowl again, cautious, due to the last time I was there, I ordered! I put my thoughts aside, considering the last time she was just having a bad day! Went in, and was gathering my cash to pay, the woman helping had her hand out waiting, cuffing it At a time, like to hurry! I apologized and gave her the money, she put the bowl in front of me, putting the cash in drawer and talking to another girl! I politely asked for a fork, she grabbed one and instead of giving it too me, she decided to turn her back and continue to talk with her coworker, I stood there for, I kid you not a minute! And decided to leave, I even looked back to see if she noticed I was gone, and nothing! I felt so utterly hurt at the fact that my presence didn't mean a thing, I came home told my daughter what happened, she suggest I call the restaurant, and so I did! The owner wasn't there, so I spoke with the acting manager, her name wasn't mentioned! I told her my issue, and that I've been in customer service for 20 years, and I know that may not mean anything, but to me it really does! Anyways, she wanted me to explain what she looked like, and she will have a conversation with her! I told this has happened way more than it should, and I will never go back again! And I do hope that the conversation will be said! Cause she asked what can she do to make it up too me, so she doesn't loose me as a patron! Simple better customer service, treat all people who are coming in, like they matter! You're promoting good healthy food, how about good HEALTHY smiles, kindness, being just polite! I'm not writing this to steer you from this establishment, cause the food is OK, and alot of people seem to enjoy it, but just mentioning why I will no longer be supporting there restaurant and going back ever again! Thank you
I wanted to love it but my Wagamama bowl was only ok. Certainly not worth $16. Tofu was sparse (6 tiny pieces) and were dripping in water soggy and tasted off. We got it to go so I didn’t realize this or would have brought it back. The bowl had mild flavor, pretty unremarkable. Wouldn’t recommend. The cardamom cookie was astoundingly good. The banana peanutbutter cookie -super bland. The double chocolate chip was on the dry side and lacked depth.
I am not one to leave bad reviews, but this is the 3rd time I order the Wagamama salad and it comes with partially rotten vegetables. It is absolutely distasteful to be about to take a bite of food from a plate and realize that half of the bite is black. The first time I had to throw the sweet potato away because half of it was black and rotten, and the cucumbers tasted rancid. This time the avocado was a little black and rotten. If you're going to charge $30 for a salad at least check the pieces before arranging the plate. Not coming here again.
What happened? Did this place change ownership? Was I wrong to come here on a Monday? The Old Fashioned burger was HORRIBLE! The tempeh patty was chewy & dry (like it was microwaved for 10 minutes), the unmelted vegan cheese was almost nonexistent, the bun was stale, there were two very small slices of Roma tomato and the sparse sauce was like a very thick 1000 island! I will not be back. This place used to be my favorite. What a shame. It took 25 minutes of waiting to get our food and there were only two other couples in the entire restaurant. I would have been better off going across the street and getting a frozen Boca Burger and making it myself. Can you tell I feel upset and cheated?
This review is tough to write because of how conflicted I feel about Hip Vegan. We are up in Ojai for my birthday weekend and decided to try Hip Vegan. We first came in on Friday and had the best experience. Manuel (I believe was his name)was so friendly and helpful. He provided menu suggestions, answered all our questions, and made our night. I had their delicious potato tacos special and my husband had a great jackfruit burrito. Today, we had friends joining us in town and since our experience was so positive the day before, we decided to bring them all to Hip Vegan for lunch. They didn’t have the same potato tacos available, so I attempted to ask the server at the counter (female, long dark hair) a few clarifying questions as this was only my second time eating there. Right off the bat, I could tell the server was irritated. She was curt, terse, and quite frankly rude. I initially asked if it was possible to turn the jackfruit burrito into a bowl (I can’t eat gluten and my husband raved out it the night before) she bluntly said no. I asked for clarification and she bluntly said we don’t do that here. I then inquired about her opinion on one of the specials they had listed (lime in a coconut) and she bluntly stared “It’s a salad”. Again, it was already clear this server was in a bad mood but I did need to order so I politely asked that she work with me in order to find something I could eat. She reluctantly confirmed I could add the jackfruit I wanted to a black bean bowl (very similar to if she had just agreed to turn the jackfruit burrito into a bowl…) which I ordered, along with the spicy noodles special for my husband and a couple drinks (both from their tap). Our friends ordered after me (two separate orders) and told me when we sat down immediately after I left counter the server began badmouthing me to her coworkers (why?). We all sat outside (lovely patio) and the same grouchy brunette brought our friends drinks, then food, and avoided eye contact with me the whole time (again, why?). After about 5 minutes following our friends receiving their complete order, our drinks had not even been brought out (again, I ordered before any of my friends) The next time the grouchy brunette passed by, I asked for the status of our drinks. She sort of smirked and walked away. It was very odd. At this point my husband was done with her strange rudeness and went inside to talk to another employee about the situation. The other employee apologized and immediately brought out our whole order. The whole experience with this woman tainted what should have been such a great birthday afternoon. I don’t know what this woman’s problem was, but she should not be in a customer facing role. If it weren’t for her, this review would be 5 stars.
If you have a nut allergy, do not go here. I have a severe tree nut allergy and ordered the souk salad. If you look at all the other items on their menu, you'll see they mark items if they're gluten free, spicy, etc. I am aware that vegan restaurants will use nut substitutes, but in every other restaurant I have been to -- they will always, always note if there are nuts in a menu item. After all, it is one of the most common allergies in the world. The souk salad did not have any indication of nuts; one particular ingredient was called 'herb cheese.' So, I thought things were all good, until I had a few bites and went into anaphylactic shock. As I was in the bathroom, my friends spoke with the cashier. They found out the 'herb cheese' was entirely made of cashews (tree nut), and the cashier was quite slack about it. My friends were the ones who asked her, "Aren't you going to give her (me) a new salad?" And that's when the cashier got on that. I was in their bathroom for several hours before going to the hospital (yes I should've gone sooner, but I have never experienced an allergic reaction this severe, so I didn't know.) I also passed out on the sidewalk outside their restaurant, and when I came to, I went inside to inform the cashier that I passed out and puked outside due to a reaction to their food, they didn't do anything about it. There was one kind worker who, at the tail end of my experience, said "Hey, the previous workers didn't treat you very well. Let's give you your money back." As for my ER experience, thanks to my insurance, I *only* had to pay a $415 for my co-pay, epipen, and medication. I have never written a Google review in my life, but here we are. I have no deep resentment toward Hip Vegan or the workers there. But, their menu was wrong, I could have died, and they were arguably complacent about that...and I had to pay quite a bit of money for it all at the end of the day. It was a lovely restaurant and great environment, but yeah. Don't go here if you have a nut allergy.
